Fennel Essential Oil and Extract, The Potent Anti Hypoglycemic Remedies

Fennel may process a strong effect in preventing the abnormal rise of blood glucose in patients with diabetes, some scientists found.

In compared to hyperglycemia with an excessive amount of glucose that circulates in the blood plasma, hypoglycemia is a condition of blood sugar, that falls below the levels of the normal range.

Patient with acute hypoglycemia may experience symptoms of clumsiness, trouble talking, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures or death.

Most cases of hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes are due poor management. However, eating more carbohydrates than usual, less physical activity compared to normal day being sick or high levels of stress in patients with diabetes also can cause blood glucose uptake.

Some researchers suggested that not getting the right dosage of insulin and glucose-lowering medication also cause increased blood glucose levels.

Long-term untreated hyperglycemia can elevate the onset of some serious complications including nerve damage, kidney damage and failure, heart disease and eye disease, particularly in food and skin problems. or retinopathy foot problems caused by damaged nerves and poor blood flow skin problems, such as bacterial and fungal infections

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species belongings to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the examine the antihyperglycemic activity of fennel essential oil in an animal model, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate of rats induced by bacterial streptozotocin.

At the concentrations of 30 mg/kg body weight, essential oil of fennel demonstrated a correction of hyperglycemia in the doses from 162.5 mg/dL to 81.97 ± 1.97 mg/dL by increased the serum of antioxidants activity of serum glutathione peroxidase from 59.72 U/g Hb to 99.60 U/g Hb produced by the host.

The application also improved the pathological changes noticed in their kidney and pancreas, compared to the control group.

After making the final adjustment, researchers suggested that the study not only reaffirms the use of essential oil of fennel for the treatment of hyperglycemia in folk medicine but also raises the possibility of essential oil inclusion in the antidiabetic drug industry.

Further analysis of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of selected Sudanese plants, including fennel that is traditionally used to treat diabetes, researchers at the Khartoum College of Medical Sciences, suggested that fennel extract reveals a significant antioxidant activity in DPPH free radical scavenging assay.

However, injection of fennel extract exhibited the highest toxicity.

These findings indicated that although fennel extract processes a substantial and positive effect in reducing the spike of blood glucose intake and the use of the fennel extract can only be prescribed by herbalists and professionals in the related field.

Additionally, in the testing, the hypoglycemic effect of single dose of Gluconorm-5 (150, 300 and 600 mg/kg body weight) made up of five plants namely Camellia sinensis, Punica granatum, Macrotyloma uniflorum, Foeniculum vulgare and Trigonella foenum-graecum in normal, glucose loaded normal and diabetes-induced rats, researchers found that

* Fifteen days of oral feeding of the Gluconorm-5 (300 and 600 mg/kg) to diabetic rats resulted in a significant (P < 0.01) reduction of blood glucose, lipid profile, liver weight, and marker enzymes as compared to those rats in whom STZ induced toxicity was untreated.

* The diabetic rats treated with the formula showed the expanded islets compared to the untreated diabetic rats, which showed the shrunken islets.

* Treated rats received 300 mg/kg of Gluconorm-5 showed pronounced antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic and hepatoprotective effect.

This comprehensive differentiation showed that Gluconorm-5 processes a potent antidiabetic antihyperlipidemic and hepatoprotective effect properties.

Taken altogether, fennel extract, fennel essential oil used alone or combined with other herbal antidiabetic herbal medicine can be considered an adjuvant in the treatment of hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus.

Green Tea and its Bioactive Polyphenols Suppress the Onset and Progression of Osteoporosis

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of osteoporosis, some scientists suggested.

Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by progression in the reduction of bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue and considered a major health problem in both elderly men and women.

The diseases also affect all bone in the body, including the bones of the spine, hip, and wrist

Scientists as of today do not know the exact causes of osteoporosis. However, they do know that certain factors are associated with the onset and progression of the disease.

Osteoporosis is the common disease among the elderly, probably due to the aging effect that induces nutrition deficiency such as
* Vitamin D insufficiency and reduced calcium absorption,

* Reduced hormone production, the drop of estrogen levels after menopause, can speeds up bone loss.

* Reduced production of bone mass and increased bone reabsorption.

These results suggested that osteoporosis can make bone more fragile and easier to break. In elderly, osteoporosis can be dangerous, as fractures can cause prolonged immobility, and required a longer healing process.

Some researchers suggested that fractures in the older population are the most common cause of blood clots or pneumonia, both of which can have fatal consequences.

Long-term use of certain medicines, such as anti-seizure drug Glucocorticoids and medical conditions such as kidney disease, Cushing's syndrome, and an overactive thyroid or parathyroid, can also increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Dr. Stephen P Tuck, the lead author in the study Osteoporosis in men said, "The incidence of osteoporotic fractures in elderly men, just as in aged women, increases exponentially with age; the rise in men, however, is some 5–10 years later than in women. Up to 50% of male osteoporosis have no identifiable etiology; however elderly males have a much higher likelihood of having an identifiable secondary cause than younger men".

Truly, both male and female share the same conditions of the onset of osteoporosis, but the onset of the disease in men is about 10 years later, compared to a woman in the same age.

Interestingly, in the observation of hip fracture in the aging population, Dr. Eric Orwoll, a physician-researcher who studies osteoporosis at Oregon Health and Science University wrote, “A third of all hip fractures occur in men, yet the problem of osteoporosis in men is frequently downplayed or ignored.”

Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the study to evaluate the effects of ingestion of green tea and green tea bioactive compounds in mitigating bone loss and risk of osteoporotic fractures in both elderly women and men, researchers found that the applications exert significant activities in reducing the onset of osteoporosis, through their antioxidants and initiation of the production of natural antioxidant in the body such as glutathione and enzymes (e.g., catalase and superoxide dismutase) in inhibiting the levels of ROS that facilitate the chain reaction.

Truly, the overexpression of free radicals has been associated with the change in the balance between activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, leading to osteoclasts in destroying the calcified tissue and inducing bone remodeling.

These results demonstrated that green tea and its bioactive components exhibit a significant decrease in the risk of fracture by improving bone mineral density and preventing free radicals in damage the bone-forming osteoblasts while suppressing osteoclastic activities.

Moreover, in the review of the effect of green tea and its bioactive components on bone health, researchers indicated that the ingestions display an impressive osteoprotective impact on bone mass and microarchitecture in various bone loss models associated with aging, sex hormone deficiency, and chronic inflammation.

The implication of reduced onset and progression of osteoporosis in the aging population due to sex hormone deficiency may be attributed to green tea and its bioactive compound in increasing the levels of osteocalcin, a bone formation marker, decreasing serum of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), a bone resorption marker and improving the body in the absorption of calcium.

In fact, the serum levels of osteocalcin (OC) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) are considered effective measurements in the rate of bone turn over in patients with osteoporosis.

Interestingly, application of green tea and its bioactive compound also is found to modulate the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the regulation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, through inhibiting the production of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the liver in initiating inflammation and reducing levels of interleukin-1 and 6(IL-1-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), the sensitive markers of systemic inflammation.

These differentiation were supported by the study in the evaluation of the efficacy of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) at mitigating bone loss and microstructure deterioration along with related mechanisms in 40 androgen-deficient aged male rats, a model of male osteoporosis, randomly assigned to received A 2 (sham vs. orchidectomy) × 2 (no GTP and 0.5% GTP in drinking water) for 16 weeks.

At the end of experiment, researchers found that rats treated with GTP demonstrate an increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, bone mineral density, and trabecular volume, number, and strength of femur; trabecular volume and thickness and bone formation in both the proximal tibia and periosteal tibial shaft, and decreased eroded surface in the proximal tibia and endocortical tibial shaft; and increased liver glutathione peroxidase activity.

The findings indicated a strong implication of green tea polyphenols in decreasing cortical and trabecular bone loss and increasing both bone density by stimulating the overexpression of bone formation and reducing bone resorption via antioxidant capacity.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered functional foods in ameliorating early onset, progression and combined with standard medicine for treatment of osteoporosis.

However, intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.

Garlic, The Kitchen Spice in the Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension

Scientists may have found a common kitchen spice with potential in reducing high blood pressure quickly without including any side effects, some studies endorsed.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If it stays high over time it can damage the body in many ways.

The causes of hypertension are unknown. However, researchers do know that acute hypertension is induced by daily stress.

Certain risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyle choices, physical inactivity unhealthy diet with high in saturated and trans fat, refined products, processed food, high sugar, and salt intake,...... over time cause your blood pressure to spice-up chronically.

Lifestyle choices can also lead to overweight or obese, the risk factors for the early onset of hypertension.

According to the statistic, in the US, over 75 million adults or 32% have high blood pressure.

In other words, 1 in every 3 American adults has the syndrome. Sadly 44% of the mentioned adults with high blood pressure are not under control.

Uncontrol high blood pressure has long been known as a major risk factor for the development of heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States.

Blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects such as gastrointestinal discomforts, tiredness, weakness, headache.

Some patients who are taking the hypertensive medicine over the prolonged periods of time may experience symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

In severe cases, intake of antihypertensive drugs for a long term can cause dermatitis, arthritis and anemia and lupus erythematosus-like syndrome, according to the article "Adverse Effects of Antihypertensive Drugs" written by Dr. DWARD D. FREIS, M.D.

If you are currently taking any anti-high blood pressure medications, please make you that you know all the side effects.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia.

The kitchen spice has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotic, etc.

In adult men and women, participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2006-2008 to 2012-2014), intake of garlic is associated to reduce the risk of hypertension by up 26%.

In hypertension of 80-90% patients with excess glucocorticoid level, allicin found in garlic attenuated dexamethasone-induced anorexia and loss of total body weight.

A randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial conducted on 56 CVD patients, aged 25 - 75 years old also suggested treatment with garlic-based drugs can be effective for controlling BP in CVD patients and has no interaction with other drugs that CAD patients take, after 3 months of the administration.

Dr. Takashima M the lead author at the Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd said, " aged garlic extract (AGE) is effective in reducing the blood pressure of hypertensive patients,......AGE-induced the concentration-dependent vasorelaxation of isolated rat aortic rings that had been precontracted with norepinephrine"

In fact, The traditional Chinese medicine, food therapy, and hypertension control, all recommended that garlic is of the food to be used for hypertension control, according to a statistical analysis of antihypertensive foods recommended in 20 books on the application of food therapy for hypertension control.

If you can control your diet, make changes to lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, you could do just fine without the drugs,

Taking all together, garlic may be used as preventive and controlling effects for patients with or without high blood pressure. Some researchers insisted that garlic anti hypertension effect may result from its anticoagulant property.

Eggplant, The Veggie Which Normalizes the Blood Cholesterol with No Side Effects

Eggplant may process a significant effect in decreasing the risk and onset of abnormally high blood cholesterol, some scientists suggested
Cholesterol, the waxy substance produced by the liver or intake from the dietary sources plays an important role in the building of the cell walls, producing steroid hormones and promoting the digestive function in food digestion.
However, high levels of blood cholesterol can weaken the arterial wall and block the blood flow in the arteries, leading to the substantially increased the risk of heart diseases and stroke.
The ratio of total cholesterol is 4/1, any numbers that are less than is considered within the healthy range. The lower of the ratio is an indication that you have a higher than normal amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is essential to remove blood cholesterol from the blood back to the liver, leading to less low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the initiation of cardiovascular diseases.

Eggplant is a species of S. melongena, belonging to the family Solanaceae and native to India.
The plant has been cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory. It is famous with its deeply purple and the best eggplant can be found from August through October when it is in season.
Chemical constituents of eggplant include sterols (i.e. typical plant sterols, androstane, pregnane and cholestane derivatives, steroidal alkaloids and sapogenins), phytosterols, triterpenes, δ-amyrin, Chlorogenic acid, Nasunin and other Polyphenolic compounds.

In the study to reaffirm the Eggplant (Solanum melongena) consumed extensively in Brazil may have a strong effect in reducing the serum cholesterol researchers at the Instituto de Ciências Biológicas conducted an evaluation to test the plant cholesterol metabolism and hypocholesterolemic effect
In the total of 38 hypercholesterolemic human volunteers ingesting S. melongena infusion for five weeks, 38 hypercholesterolemic subjects were given either S. melongena infusion (N = 19) or placebo (N = 19) participated in two clinical experiments in which the effect of S. melongena infusion was studied with (N = 16) or without (N = 38) dietary orientation.
S. melongena infusion significantly reduced the blood levels of total and LDL cholesterol and of apolipoprotein B.
After dietary orientation, no intra- or intergroup differences were seen for any of the parameters analyzed.
The results suggest that S. melongena infusion had a modest and transitory effect, which was not different from that obtained with standard orientation for dyslipidemia patients (diet and physical activities).

Dried powdered fruits of eggplant (Solanum melongena) was tested in a double-blind placebo-controlled study of the effectiveness of oral Solanum melongena (SM) consisted of 41 hyperlipidemic volunteers allocated to active treatment (n= 21) or placebo (n= 20).
Each volunteer received two capsules containing SM (450 mg) or placebo (450 mg) twice daily and was followed monthly. The dose of SM used corresponds to that given to treat hyperlipidemia in Brazil.
After 3 months, serum total cholesterol, LDL-c, and LDL-c/HDL-c decreased (p<0.05) in the group treated with SM.
Dr. Silva GE, the lead author wrote at the final report of the study, " SM, at least in the form commercialized in Brazil (dried powdered fruits), require further clinical trials before being recommended to treat hyperlipidemia".

Taken altogether, eggplant may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy for the treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects.

Black beans, The Legume in the Prevention and Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (Enlarged Prostate)

Black bean, a glossy black shell legume may have a potential effect in protecting the prostate gland against the onset of prostatic hyperplasia, scientists found.

Prostatic hyperplasia is a medical condition associated with the enlarged prostate that impedes the urinary flow.

The prostate is a gland that surrounds part of your urethra, the tube with a function to carry urine and semen out of men penis.

The condition is found mostly in aging men, as a result of free testosterone converting to hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Overabundant DHT in the men body is a major cause of an enlarged prostate.

Truly, DHT has been found to plays a beneficial role in the developing prostate but it can be detrimental in the adult prostate in facilitating pathologic prostate growth, including the enlarged prostate.

The role of DHT in other adult tissues is uncertain. DHT has not been shown to perform beneficial functions unique from testosterone in the adult male, and it is believed that its fundamental effect may amplify testosterone's weaker hormonal signal.

The 5alpha-reductase inhibitors play an important role in the protection of the prostate gland by blocking the process of prostate diseases, by reducing the prostate volume, and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and enlarged prostate.

5alpha-reductase inhibitors have been found in the low levels in an aging male with prostate diseases.

Some researchers suggested that by targeting the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the enlarged prostate can be preventable.

Men who follow an unhealthy diet and lifestyle of the Western diet with a lot of saturated and trans fat, red meat, process and less in fruits and vegetable and whole grain are associated with a substantial risk of the early onset of LUTS (lower urinary tract symptoms) in describing the symptoms related to problems of the lower urinary tract (bladder, prostate, and urethra), including enlarged prostate.

Dr. Pao-Hwa Lin, the lead author in the study "Lifestyle and LUTS: what is the correlation in men?" reconfirm these statements said, "1) Epidemiological data repeatedly show a favorable relationship between healthy eating habits and regular physical activity level and a lower risk for LUTS or progression of LUTS, 2) certain specific nutrients or dietary factors may contribute to the link between diet and LUTS due to their anti-inflammatory potential, and 3) very little research has been conducted to test the epidemiological findings in randomized controlled trials".

"A healthy lifestyle with good quality diet and regular physical activity is beneficial not only for potentially improving or reducing LUTS but also for cardiovascular and overall health".

In other words, an enlarged prostate can be preventable in aging male, if they follow a healthy diet and lifestyle with moderate exercise.

Black bean is a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belonging to the family Fabaceae.

The legume can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was first domesticated growth in South America.

Chemical constituents of black bean include
The major chemical compounds of black bean include anthocyanin, (-)-epicatechin, delphinidin, petunidin, flavonols, and malvidin.

In the examination to reconfirm the effect of black soybeans on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), researchers launched an investigation to evaluate the anti benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) anthocyanin extracted from the legume on rat induced enlarged prostate.

The study included a total of male rats whose were divided into five experimental groups: a control group, a BPH-induced group, and three BPH-induced groups that received oral doses of anthocyanin (40, 80, and 160 mg/kg).

Prostate hyperplasia was induced by the administration of testosterone propionate for 4 weeks.

Anthocyanin-treated groups received the compound for 4 weeks after the induction of enlarged prostate.

The mean prostate weights for the rats receiving 40, 80, and 160 mg/kg anthocyanin were 323.00, 324.00, and 617.50 mg, respectively.

This assessment indicated the preferred dose of anthocyanin in the prevention of enlarged prostate is 40 mg.

In groups comparison, the average prostate weight in the BPH-induced group was significantly higher than in the control group (p < 0.05), whereas the prostate weights in the anthocyanin-administered groups were significantly lower than in the BPH-induced group (p < 0.05).

Furthermore, anthocyanin administration helped to prevent the change of prostate weight caused by injecting testosterone to induce prostatic hyperplasia.

Moreover, apoptotic body counts were significantly higher in groups receiving anthocyanin than in the BPH-induced group.

These results suggested that anthocyanin may be effective in decreasing the volume and suppressing the proliferation of the prostate, through inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Additionally, in the testing to examine whether Seoritae extract (SE) form the black soybeans have beneficial effects on the reduction of prostate weight in a rat model of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), researchers at the joint study led by the The Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine conducted an experiment with BPH induced by intramuscular injections of testosterone enanthate once a week for 5 weeks in Sprague-Dawley rats, then rats were treated with or without daily oral doses of SE during BPH induction.

After 5 weeks, the SE treatment group showed a significant decrease in prostate weight, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and 5alpha-reductase activity compared to the nontreated BPH group.

These results coincidently showed that SE is effective in decreasing the weight and proliferation of the prostate similar to those of the above study

Dr. Hoon Jang, the lead scientists suggest that SE may be an effective treatment for BPH.

Taken all together, black beans containing the abundant major bioactive compound anthocyanin may
be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of the early phase of enlarged prostate with no side effects, depending on the further the human studies.

Banana Enhances the Immune Function Against Infectious Diseases

Scientists may have found a whole food which processes a potential effect to improve the function of the immune system against infectious micro-pathogens, some studies suggested.

The immune system is the body's defense against infectious organisms and other invaders, by activating the systematic immune response.

In the acute phase of infection, macrophages, the first line of immune defenses stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to protect the injured or damaged tissue against foreign invasion.

However, overproduction of the proinflammatory cytokines can cause damage to the healthy cells and improper healing with the formation of scars.

Immune system disorders are a chronic condition caused by the abnormal under-activity or over-activity of the immune system.

In an overactive immune system or autoimmune disorders, the immune white blood cells mistakenly attack and damage the bodily tissue.

The underactive immune disorders are also known as the immune deficiency diseases, weakening the immune ability to fight invaders, and increasing the risk of infections.

Dr. Wypych TP, the lead author in the study "The Impact of Diet on Immunity and Respiratory Diseases" wrote, "the "diet hypotheses," pointing to the importance of changes in our dietary habits" and "the interplay between the Western diet, microbiota, and inflammatory conditions".

In other words, the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, a lot of red meats, processed foods and less in fruits and vegetable may play an important role in either weakening the immune system or causing overactive immune system in the facilitation of the onset of autoimmune diseases.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belonging to the family of the lily and the orchid.

In the examining the effect of the hot-extracts isolated from fruit's peel of banana on human health researchers at the joint study led by the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology launched an evaluation to observe the antibacterial activity from aquatic animals, and immunostimulating potential, disease resistance and anti-hypothermal stress in giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii.

The injection od banana hot extracts demonstrated strong activity against 1 Gram-positive and 3 Gram-negative pathogens, including Lactococcus garvieae, Photobacteria damsella.

Prawn received BPE via injection at 1-6 μg (g prawn)(-1) significantly enhanced the immunity through the increased total hemocyte count (THC), hyaline cell (HC), granular cell (GC), phenoloxidase (PO) activity and phagocytic activity against L. garvieae from 3 to 6 days.

The extracts also significantly increased clearance efficiency against L. garvieae and a significantly decreased coagulation time of prawn from 1 to 6 days and levels of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

The survival rates of Macrobrachium rosenbergii injected with BPE at concentrations of 1, 3 and 6 μg (g prawn)(-1) were significantly higher than those injected with saline control after challenge with L. garvieae for 4-6 days, and the respective relative survival percentages of prawn were 28.6%, 38.1%, and 47.8%, respectively at 6 days, an indication of the improved immune system against the attack of pathogens.

These results suggested that BPE may be a pharmaceutical candidate to be used as the bacteriostat, and immunostimulant and physiological regulator through enhancing the immunity, physiological responses, and resistance against infectious stimuli.

Additionally, in the evaluate the antagonistic mechanisms of Lactobacillus plantarum CIF17AN2 (an infant isolate), saba starch (banana), and their synbiotic combination against Salmonella Typhimurium SA2093, researchers found that
* The L. plantarum CIF17AN2 exhibited anti-Salmonella mechanisms through secretion of antimicrobial compounds, adhesion ability and competitive adhesion to mucin on HT-29 cell line.

* The effects of Lactobacillus plantarum CIF17AN2 on the Salmonella inhibition was significantly reduced in the presence of human fecal microflora.

* The combination of saba starch with L. plantarum CIF17AN2 showed the greatest inhibition against Sal. Typhimurium SA2093 in the colon model.

* The enhancement of anti-Salmonella activity due to the addition of saba starch corresponded a significant decrease in pH and an increase of lactic acid and short chain fatty acids.

These results suggested that banana starch can be used alone or combined with other ingredients for the treatment of Salmonella T. infection.

Taken altogether, banana may be considered a function in enhancing the immune function against microorganisms, which cause infectious diseases, depending on the confirmation of further data collection from the large example size and multi-center studies in human.

Avocado, the Fruit Which Kills Breast Cancer Cells in Vivo and Vitro

Avocado may be considered a potentially functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, some scientists suggested.

Breast cancer is the medical condition that starts on the surface of the inner lining of breast tissue in the early stage. On this stage, a small lump may be found when touched.

The 5 years survival rate at this stage is 100%.

However, at the later stage, malignant cancers cell can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The lifetime risk for a woman to develop breast cancer is 1/8 in the US.

The epidemiological studies suggested that women who carry the mutated gene BRAC1 and 2 are associated with substantially increased risk of the disease onset.

Men who carry the mutated gene BRCA2 have a 7% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer.

Sadly, women who carry the abnormal BRCA1 orBRCA2 gene have about a 60% risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetimes, compared to only 12.5% for other women.

In a comment of the study published on June 20 in the Journal of the American Medical Association Dr. García-Closas, M.D., Dr.P.H., deputy director of NCI's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, who was not involved in the research. said, “This study has confirmed estimates of the risk of developing cancer for women who are mutation carriers—that confirmation is reassuring for both women and the healthcare team who make important care decisions.”

Therefore, suggestions to these women may include intensive early surveillance, use of chemoprevention, and prophylactic surgery may be necessary for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

Avocados are a commercially valuable fruit and are cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world, it is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

Chemical constituents of avocado include
The fruit contains campesterol, high amounts of β-sitosterol (average 76.4 mg/100 g); fatty acids (approximately 60% monounsaturated, 20% saturated, and 20% unsaturated); high amounts of glutathione (27.7 mg/100 g); approximately 2% protein; 6–9% carbohydrates and sugars (glucose, fructose, d-mannoheptulose, a taloheptulose, and an alloheptulose); two bitter substances (1-acetoxy-2,4-dihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene and 1,2,4-trihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene); carnitine; proanthocyanidins; persenones A and B.

Persin, the toxic chemical compound found in the fruits and leaves of avocado inhibited human breast cancer cell line, in the testing of synthetic analogs of the avocado-produced toxin persin by activated the program cells death pathway.

When using combined with tamoxifen, the small amounts of tamoxifen needed to perform similar chemo effects, thus reducing the toxicity to the healthy cells that normally killed by the presence of tamoxifen.

Futhermore, in the study to examine the anticancer properties of Persea declinata (Bl.) Kosterm bark methanolic crude extract (PDM), researchers at the University of Malaya launched an investigation to test the PDM in the exhibition of antiproliferative effect in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells.

Application of the PDM exhibited a potent antiproliferative effect in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells, with an IC50 value of 16.68 µg/mL after 48 h of treatment.

Injection of PDM caused cell cycle arrest and subsequent apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, as seen by increase population at the G0/G1 phase and, higher lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and DNA fragmentation, the indications of cancer cells apoptosis.

Additional analysis suggested that PDM elevated the expression of ROS in the induction of cancer cell death through cytotoxicity observed by the perturbation of mitochondrial membrane potential, cell permeability, and activation of caspases-3/7, in the execution phase of apoptosis.

The results of cancer cells apoptosis can be observed through the increased the expression of the proapoptotic molecule, Bax, but decreased the expression of prosurvival proteins, Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL, in a dose-dependent manner after PDM administration.

The finding strongly suggested that PDM isolated from avocado could inhibit proliferation in MCF-7 cells via cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction.

Taken altogether, avocado may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of breast cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of the avocado anti-breast cancer possibilities.
