Cranberry Promotes the Cardio-Metabolic Health

Cardiometabolic risk is a condition that estimates the possibility of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease and diabetes mellitus.

Cardioprotection is a process including the use of substances associated with the preservation of the function and viability of cardiac muscle tissue by the reintroduction of oxygenic blood flow back to the tissues.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions caused by the underlying damage of blood vessels and the heart.

More precisely, CVD can be coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina, myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack), or stroke, depending on the location of the blockage or disruption,

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately 84 million people in this US living with some form of cardiovascular disease. The condition has also been found to cause the death of about 2,200 people a day.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of arteries, leading to the narrowing of the artery and reducing oxygen risk blood flow to the heart and brain.

Depending on the location of the blockage, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the brain, it will cause the death of the brain cells, leading to stroke.

However, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the heart, it will cause damage to the heart tissues, leading to heart disease.

Most common disease associated with atherosclerosis is coronary artery disease. Plaques are made up of cholesterol, calcium and other chemical substances in the artery

Most people with atherosclerosis are asymptomatic at the early stage.

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulins in the bloodstream. or insulins in the bloodstream are not used properly to convert glucose to energy.

Epidemiologically, diabetes is caused by either the beta cells in the pancreas died-off or insulin receptors with a function that use insulin to convert glucose to energy clogged-up by fat or cholesterol.

In a healthy individual, after eating, the rise of blood glucose triggers the production of insulin by the pancreas into the bloodstream After you eat, your blood sugar (glucose) rises. This rise in glucose triggers your pancreas to release insulin into the bloodstream that travels through the blood to your body's cells before converting glucose into energy or store it to use later.

In other words, insulin released by the pancreas joints with the Insulin receptors on the outer part of a cell that binds insulin in the blood to convert glucose to energy.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cardiometabolic health, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium berry fruit in modulating gut microbiota function and cardiometabolic risk factors.

In cardiometabolic health, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites improved the
serum lipid profiles reduced the levels of blood pressure.

Furthermore, the endothelial functions associated with vascular relaxation and contraction, glucoregulation involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism. and a variety of biomarkers associated with inflammation and oxidative stress in the induction of CVD and diabetes were also inhibited by the cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites

Based on the findings, researchers said, " These results warrant further research, particularly studies dedicated to the elucidation of dose-response relations, pharmacokinetic/metabolomics profiles, and relevant biomarkers of action with the use of fully characterized cranberry products.".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of cardiometabolic health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size, and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Natural Whole Food for Prevention and Treatment of Dandruff

Honey may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of dandruff, a common skin problem of many adults, some scientists suggested

Dandruff is a condition of the scalp most commonly caused by the dry skin resulting from dry air.

However, in many instances, the condition also is associated with seborrheic dermatitis. leading to rough, scaly skin on the scalp.

In other words, patients with oily skin accompanied by seborrheic dermatitis can lead to overexpression of yeast that causes the development of the large white flakes or yellow scales due to uneven shedding and clumping of dead skin cells.

Belief or not dandruff affects over 50% of the general population.

There are many causes of dandruff. Researchers suggested that dry skin, use of wrong kinds of hair products and skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema are associated with the onset of dandruff.

In some people, an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus can also cause dandruff.

The increase of age hormone imbalance and prolonged periods of stress are the most common prevalent risk factors associated with the condition.

Most cases of dandruff can be treated with daily shampoo to reduce the oil on the scalp. In severe cases, due to overexpression of fungi, pyrithione zinc shampoos may be recommended.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Dandruff, if left untreated can cause itchy and inflamed scalp that it lead to temporary hair loss.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of dandruff with no side effects, researchers examine the anti-dandruff effects from honey, a bee-derived, supersaturated solution composed mainly of fructose and glucose, and contains proteins and amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and other minor components.

The application of honey exerted a significant effect in reducing dandruff, through its moisturizing and antimicrobial property.

The effective doses range between 1 and 10%, but concentrations up to 70% can be reached by mixing with oils, gel, and emulsifiers, or polymer entrapment.

With an aim to reaffirming the honey anti-dandruff activity, a researcher at the Dubai Specialised Medical Centre and Medical Research Labs, investigated the potential use of topical application of crude honey in the management of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.

The study included 30 patients (20 patients were males and 10 were females, their ages ranged between 15 and 60 years) with chronic seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, face, and front of the chest.

Before applying honey to treat the condition, participants showed conditions of scaling, itching, and hair loss. The lesions were scaling macules, papules, and dry white plaques with crust and fissures.

All patients were asked to apply diluted crude honey (90% honey diluted in warm water) every other day on the lesions with gentle rubbing for 2-3 mins. And, honey was left for 3 hr before gentle rinsing with warm water.

After 4 weeks of treatment, honey showed a significant effect on the prophylactic phase, which lasted for six months.

Furthermore, half of the patients treated with the topical honey once weekly and the other half served as control.

The treatment group demonstrated a reduction of Itching and disappeared scaling within one week. Skin lesions were healed and disappeared completely within 2 weeks.

Moreover, honey administration also improved in hair loss.

None of the patients treated with the honey application once weekly experienced a relapse for six months

Dr. Al-Waili NS, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "crude honey could markedly improve seborrheic dermatitis and associated hair loss and prevent relapse when applied weekly".

The findings clearly suggested that honey may be considered a replacement of chemical ingredients for the prevention and treatment of dandruff associated with seborrheic dermatitis, with no side effects.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Kidney Against the Onset of Lupus Nephritis

Lupus nephritis is a condition of kidneys an inflammation caused by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease.

It is a type of glomerulonephritis in which the glomeruli become inflamed.

Kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs, located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood toxins through urinary secretion.

Believe it or not, every day, the blood passes the kidneys many times. Some people with only 10% of kidney function showed no symptoms of toxin accumulation.

However, if the kidney fails to cleanse the blood due to kidney failure, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, fluid retention in your legs, ankles, or feet.

Depending on the severity of toxins accumulation, some patients may also experience symptoms of shortness of breath and confusion.

Lupus nephritis reduced kidney function may cause symptoms of sudden and unexplained swelling feet, ankles, legs, fingers, arms or the eyes, foamy appearance in urine, and frequent urination.

In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of blood in urine and elevated blood pressure.

Out of many risk factors associated with the risk of lupus nephritis, some researchers suggested genetic preposition may be a strong impact that leads to the early onset of the disease.

Dr. the lead scientist wrote, " Although many SLE susceptibility genes have been identified, the genetic basis of LN is not as well understood".

And, "some of the established general SLE susceptibility genes are associated with LN, recent discoveries highlight a number of genes with renal functions that are specifically associated with LN. Some of these genes associated with LN help to explain the disparity in the prevalence of nephritis between individuals with SLE, and also partially explain differences in LN between ancestral backgrounds".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of lupus nephritis, researchers investigated the effects of curcumin on lupus nephritis (LN) induced animal model.

LN established New Zealand Black/White (NZB/W) F1 female mice, at 18 weeks of age were fed a standard diet or a diet containing 1 % curcumin until the end of the study.

During the study, infection of curcumin decreased the proteinuria level and serum levels of IgG1, IgG2a which were elevated in LN mice.

Where proteinuria is the ratio of a protein/creatinine greater than 45 mg/mmol and high levels of IgG1, IgG2a is an indication of immune defect.

Additonally, curcumin also protected the kidneys against inflammation by reducing the anti-dsDNA IgG antibodies which were also elevated in NZB/W F1 female mice.

Where elevated levels of anti-dsDNA IgG antibodies are associated with ongoing inflammation and damage to the kidneys.

Furthermore, IgG immune complex deposition in the glomeruli was also reduced in curcumin-treated mice.

In other words, curcumin suppressed the pro-inflammatory expression in the kidney glomeruli.

Moreover, according to the kidney tested assays, kidney inflammation was also decreased after curcumin treatment.

More importantly, researchers discovered that treatment with anti-CD25 antibody injection that causes Treg depletion also affects the therapeutic effects of curcumin.

Where the anti-CD25 antibody is a conventional medicine used for enhancing the immune response.

More precisely, curcumin cannot be used in combination with anti-CD25 antibody daclizumab that
targets the T cells for the treatment of lupus nephritis.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Curcumin exerted a protective effect against LN in NZB/W F1 mice. We speculate that the protective effects of curcumin in LN may involve, at least in part, its interaction with Treg cells".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of lupus nephritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The Antidepression Natural Whole Food, Biomedical Literature Suggested

Scientists may have found a dietary vegetable that processes a strong and profound impact in ameliorated psychological depression, a recent study suggested.

Depression is a common psychological disease that affects your normal feeling, thinking and reacting to events that occur daily in your life.

People with depression may feel ashamed or afraid to ask for help. others suffer in silence.

According to the statistic of the World Health Organization, 300 million people around the world have depression. The numbers of Americans suffer from depression are increasing at an alarming rate. As of today, 16.2 million adults in the United States or 6.7% of all adults have depression in the country.

Women are more susceptible to develop depression than men and fewer than half of those affected by depression in the world is seeking professional treatment.

The disease is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and a major contributor to the overall global burden of diseases.

Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a loved one, and illness. Over 30 million

Contrary to some misconceptions, depression can be treated and avoidable.

What cause depression? is debatable, however, genetic predisposition, personality, stress and brain chemistry are found to associate to the onset of the disease.

Chronic medical conditions also can trigger the development of depression. According to the study by the Shanghai University of Sport in the review of 60 articles with a total of 4311 patients, chronic diseases are highly correlated to the expression of depression and reduced quality of life(5).

The study also suggested that increasing SF-36 physical function subscale in such patients in short and long term may have a profound and positive effect in ameliorated depression and improved quality of life.

The use of antidepressants by conventional medicine may be effective. However, they can induce side effects of an upset stomach, insomnia, sexual problems, anxiety, dizziness,....., and fatigue.

In severe cases, the intake of depressants may cause serotonin syndrome, seizures, irregular heartbeat, and unconsciousness and some people in the group under the age of 25 may experience suicidal thoughts, according to the BBC report By Lesley Ashmall(6).

Asparagus is a flowering plant, belongings to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa, and Western Asia.

The vegetable has been used from early times as a food and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In an oral administration of methanolic extract of roots of AR (MAR) of the doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg daily for 7 days and then subjected to forced swim test(FST) in mice, researchers found that application of the extract decreases immobility in FST and increases avoidance response in learned helplessness test (LH), an indication of antidepressant activity.

Dr. Singh GK, the lead author said, " MAR had an insignificant effect on l-DOPA-induced aggressive behavior indicating the absence of activity on the dopaminergic system" and "MAR has significant antidepressant activity and this effect is probably mediated through the serotonergic and the noradrenergic systems and augmentation of antioxidant defenses".

Furthermore, the injection of extracts of Asparagus cochinchinensis (AC) also expressed antidepressive effects, through inhibited oxidative stress that cause neuron cell damage and improve cell signal response and signal transmitting.

Total saponin isolated from AC significantly is found to inhibit the free radical of H2O2 in the induction of cell death in cultured cortical neurons.

Additional analysis suggested that AC antidepressant-like and neuroprotective (reducing infarct size) effects are associated with the activation of Shp-2 pathways which are associated with the inhibition of depression in an animal model.

Some researchers suggested that antidepressant activity of Asparagus racemosus (AR) may also be mediated by the neurotransmitters system, and cognitive activities possibly through the cholinergic system involved neuromuscular junctions, preganglionic neurons of the sympathetic nervous system...

Moreover, the study also showed that AR may be used as food and have potential drug-drug, drug-food, and food-food interactions with drugs and foods, sharing the cholinergic and monoaminergic pathways in sending a message between neurons, induced protective activities against the development of depression.

These results suggested that asparagus ameliorated depression with its neuroprotective effect by inhibited free radical that cause neuro cells damage and improved cell signal response.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus anti-depression possibilities.

Fennel, The Functional Herb Which Processes Anxiolytic Property Similar to Those of Diazepam with No Adverse Effects, Scientists Find

Fennel may have a therapeutic effect in reducing the risk and treatment of anxiety, some scientists suggested.

Anxiety is a psychological problem caused by significant feelings of anxiety and fear of the present and future events.

In conventional medicine, an anxiolytic also known as an antianxiety agent including buspirone (BuSpar), trazodone, venlafaxine, and several of the benzodiazepines, is a medication used to reduce physical and psychological symptoms of anxiety disorder.

Anxiety is caused by a combination of several factors. However, stress directly from all sources is considered a major cause of the disease.

Other causes of anxiety include the longterm use of illicit drugs, medication intake, and medical condition and diseases associated with reduced lung functioning

Although medication may be effective, however, short and long-term use can cause symptoms of nausea. nervousness, dizziness, reduced sexual desire, insomnia.

In severe cases, the medicine can also cause blurred vision. confusion, nightmare, and difficulty thinking or remembering.

If you are taking the above medicine, please make sure that you understand all the side effects.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the investigate of the anxiolytic activity of ethanolic extracts of Foeniculum vulgare fruit by elevated plus maze, rotarod, open field test, and hole board models, researchers found that application of fennel extracts in the does of100-200mg/kg exerts a significant anti-anxiolytic activity, similar to those of standard anxiolytic drugs diazepam (1mg/kg) without inducing intolerable adverse effects.

This result was observed by the increased number of entries and time spent in the open arm in the elevated plus-maze apparatus.

And, application the same doses also promoted a number of rearings, assisted rearing and number of square crossed viewed by an open field test.

Further analysis also discovered that of fennel extracts also processes a potent skeletal muscle relaxant effect assessed by rotarod.

Additionally, in the experiment of the elevated plus maze, rotarod, open field, and hole board used in the evaluation of the psychomotor performance and emotional aspects of rodents removed from their acclimatized cage and placed in an environment express anxiety and fear, application of fennel extract, researchers indicated that
* Fennel injection group decreases anxiety-related behavior to an open area.

* Treated rodents exhibit a significant increase in the number of open arm entries and rearings, time spent in the center and line crossing, and head dipping.

* Fennel extract-treated group also reduces numbers of time of falling through increased muscle relaxant and improved locomotor function.

These results not only are given the supports to the holistic use of fennel in the treatment of anxiety but also reconfirmed the efficacy of fennel extract in reducing levels of anxiety in tested rodents who were placed in the environment with an expression of anxiety and fear in the first study.

Truly, the viability of above is also reaffirmed by the study conducted by the Geethanjali College of pharmacy in adult Swiss albino male mice randomly divided into six groups (n = 6).

According to the results of the analysis of groups I and II received Tween 80 (5%, v/v) and diazepam (0.5 mg/kg, ip), groups III to VI received orally 50, 100, and 200 and 400 mg/kg doses of the essential oil of F. vulgare, mice groups treated with 50, 100, and 200 and 400 mg/kg displayed a significant reduction of anxiety score through an expression of all tests, including elevated plus maze (EPM), staircase test (SCT) and open field test (OFT) and other various parameters in doses dependent manner.

Compared to a higher dose of 400 mg/kg and lower dose treatment group, the application of 100 and 200 mg/kg dose of fennel essential oil mice demonstrated a strong decrease in anxiety through increased percent number of entries and time spent in open arms.

Compared to other doses of the treatment group, the administration of 200 mg/kg dose significantly increased the number of squares crossed at the center in the OFT test.

Furthermore, although the injection of 100 and 200 mg/kg doses of the essential oil-treated mice showed a significant reduction of rearing compared to another group, only the 200 mg/kg dose of the oil expressed a statistically significant reduction in rearing compared with diazepam, the conventional medicine used for the treatment of anxiety.

The discovery in the study postulated that fennel essential oil may have a potential effect in reducing anxiety nonlinearly and doses dependently.

"Fennel extract may possess anxiolytic activity supporting its traditional claim about anxiolytic activity", reported in the 19th edition of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics by Sathodkar, Bhandarkar, and Rege.

Taken all together, there is no doubt that fennel extracts and essential oil may be considered a secondary therapeutic treatment compared to standard medicine in the treatment of anxiety.

However, the intake of fennel supplements should be taken with extreme care in the prevention of toxicity.

Cranberry, the Best in Hyperglycemia Management Against Diabetics Complications

Diabetes is a medical and chronic disease characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

The disease is either caused by cells in the pancreas that died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol, such as type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of type 1 diabetes are associated with a gene mutation that causes the immune to attack the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

Acquired diabetes in most cases is caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices, including high-fat diet and physical inactivity.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 23.1 million people in the United States are living with diagnosed diabetes, costing the healthcare system more than $245 billion per year.

Sadly, there is an estimation that another 7.2 million people have diabetes but remain undiagnosed, accompanied by another 84.1 million adults 18 years and older with prediabetes.

Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes is a condition of abnormally high blood glucose in the blood.

Most cases of hyperglycemia are a result of poor management of blood glucose including uncontrolled diet, physical inactivity, miss-medication, and improper use of insulin injection.

Uncontrolled diabetes or hyperglycemia over the long-term can lead to diabetic complications, including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, depression, pain, polypharmacy, and functional disability.

Long-term elevated glucose values above 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 10 to 11 millimoles per liter (mmol/L) have been found to induce symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, fatigue, and headache.

In severe cases, some patients may also experience life-threatening complications such as fruity-smelling breath, shortness of breath, weakness, confusion, and coma.

Dr in the study of hyperglycemia in the aging population wrote, "Higher levels of Sirt1 and PGC-1α and increased expression of gluconeogenesis pathway genes are found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice. Increased Sirt6 abundance is found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice, which might increase DNA damage repair".

And, "With aging, lower Sirt1 abundance and activity, increased acetylated histone modifications and Sirt7 levels, and NOR methylation is found. Thus, whereas in normal aging cell metabolism is reduced, in the diabetic mice a compensatory mechanism may elevate Sirt1 and Sirt6 levels, increasing gluconeogenesis and DNA repair from the oxidative damage caused by hyperglycemia".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diabetes complications, researchers examined the effect of aqueous solutions of two different cranberry powders (CP and CP-SAB) on hyperglycemia.

In vitro, in vitro CP and CP-SAB administration showed a significant inhibition of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) associated with the management of hyperglycemia linked to type 2 diabetes.

Low levels of α-amylase have been found in patients with diabetes.

α-glucosidase is associated with the digestion of carbohydrates is elevated in patients with disbetes

According to the chemical analysis, the efficacy of CP and CP-SAB that inhibits hyperglycemia was probably attributed to the chemical constituents p-Coumaric acid and quercetin derivatives, the main phenolic compounds identified in the cranberry powders.

Furthermore, increased with increased dose (1-5 mg/mL) of CP-SAB exerted the increased α-glucosidase inhibitory activity from 60% to 100%.

At 5 mg/mL, CP-SAB exerted a maximum of 40% inhibition against α-amylase.

Levels of ACE were also significantly inhibited by CP-SAB at the concentration of 100 and 200 mg/mL sample concentrations.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These in vitro results indicate the potential of cranberry powders as a dietary supplement and food-based strategies for potential hyperglycemia management".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the management of hyperglycemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica May Suppress the Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a form of arthritis, found in the general term of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) characterized by wear and tear on joints.

The chronic and medical condition affects over 25 million people in the United States alone.

The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty of moving the joint or joints. Therefore one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), compared to other types of arthritis.

Furthermore, the pain usually gets worse ina change of weather, at night, and in the advanced diseases, and the pain can occur even at rest.

In contrast to the general belief, osteoarthritis only damages the joints of hands, knees, but also cause inflammation of the joints in your hips and spine.

The condition is a slow development disease, often starts in the 40s and 50s, and affects almost all people to some degree by age 80.

The common risk factors of osteoarthritis are aging, gender, improper healing of injured joint at a young age, obesity, and bone deformity. However, people who have a job with tasks that place repetitive stress on a particular joint are associated with the onset of osteoarthritis in most industrial countries.

According to the statistic from the NIH, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the US. Among adults, 60 years of age or older the prevalence of symptomatic knee and sadly OA affects approximately 10% in men and 13% in women.

Epidemiological strongly suggested that obese and overweight which have a strong impact on the weight-bearing joints, the genetic preposition of a patient can make such patient more susceptible to the disease compared to others do not. People with a joint injury that did heal properly in the younger age and people with occupations that require standing for long periods of time, repetitive bending, heavy lifting, or other movements and the increase in age are associated with the increased risk of the onset of the disease.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of aging-related diseases, scientists examined the angelica phytochemical, sodium ferulate, and a polysaccharide fraction on osteoarthritis animal models or in human chondrocytes stimulated by the pro-inflammatory cytokine, Interleukine-1β.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of the experiment* Sodium ferulate found in angelica exhibited marked anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties by inhibiting the TNF/TNFR signal transduction pathway associated with inflammation and autoimmunity.

* On another hand, the polysaccharide fraction which contains a mixture of various carbohydrates was found to promote proteoglycan biosynthesis in the cartilage matrix by stimulating the activity of the UDP-glycosyltransferases that synthesize the chondroitin sulfate chains of aggrecans.

In other words, both chemical compounds demonstrated strong protective effects against osteoarthritis through different mechanisms.

based on the findings, researchers said, "the combined action of sodium ferulate and polysaccharides fraction would prevent cartilage destruction in osteoarthritis and favor cartilage repair".

Taken altogether, herbal angelica may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of osteoarthritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Induces Apoptosis of Human Neuroblastoma Cells

The brain formed part of the central nervous system is the most complex organ made up of more than billions of nerve cells or neurons.

The functions of the brain are associated with the communication of trillions of connections called synapses and many specialized regions.
A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites, and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves that play an essential role in processing and transmitting the information.
Neuroblastoma is cancer developed by the immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body, mostly in and around the adrenal glands.

Cancer most commonly affects children age 5 or younger compared to less often in older children.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Net, approximately 800 children are diagnosed with neuroblastoma in the United States.

And 90% of children affected by neuroblastoma are younger than 5.

Sadly, the the-5-year survival rate of cancer is less than 50%.

Most common symptoms are totally depending on the area that has been effected
* Neuroblastoma in the abdomen can induce symptoms of pains, a mass under the skin that isn't tender when touched and changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation.

* Neuroblastoma in the chest may cause symptoms including wheezing, chest pain and changes to the eyes, including drooping eyelids and unequal pupil size

Some patients with neuroblastoma may also experience symptoms of back pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, and bone pain.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of brain cancer, scientists examined the effects of Angelica polymorpha Maxim root extract (APRE) cytotoxicity on neuroblastoma cells (NB).

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the final results of the experiment,
* APRE reduced cell viability in NB to a greater extent than in fibroblast cells.
* APRE could inhibit proteins and down-regulated pathways associated with cancer cell proliferation and survival.

* Furthermore, APRE promoted pro-apoptotic protein and inhibited the expression of proteins associated with anti-apoptosis.
* Moreover, APRE depolarized the mitochondria membrane potential and activation of caspase-3 associated with the cell death in the SH-SY5Y cells.

Additional differentiation, researchers said, "APRE, the intrinsic pathway was solely responsible for inducing apoptosis as we also showed that the non-caspase autophagy pathway or ER stress-ROS mediated pathways were not involved".

Taken altogether, herbal angelica may be considered a remedy for the treatment of neuroblastoma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Chaste Tree Berry, The Best Hepatoprotective Whole Herb Medicine

Chaste tree beery is found to associate with reduced risk of liver damage and diseases through various mechanisms, the recent study suggested

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

In acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in mice study, oral administration of chaste tree berry increased significantly in the expression of levels of antioxidant in inhibition of free radicals domino' effect and levels of ferric ion in induced hepatotoxicity caused by acetaminophen.

According to the Al-Hikmah University, Hepatoprotective effects of chaste tree berry may also mediate the alternative effects of acetaminophen in serum alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin, and total bilirubin levels which can also contribute to hepatoxicity.

Dr. Ajiboye TO said, " Vitex doniana fruits possess antioxidant properties and halted acetaminophen-mediated oxidative rout on cellular proteins, lipids and DNA, made possible by β-sitosterol, platycodin D, apigenin, saikosaponin, chrysin and ellagitanin, (the antioxidants) in the extract".

Furthermore, ethanol extract Vitex glabrata (EEVG) on carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage in rats, .displayed also antioxidant activity in inhibited superoxide dismutase, GSH, lipid peroxidation (LPO), catalase, and peroxidase levels in liver homogenate.

Pre-treatment of the extract illustrated a strong inhibited effect against levels of LPO in CCl(4)-intoxicated livers and reduced the elevated serum levels of chemical compounds which can cause liver damage

In fact, the extract displays an enormous hepaprotective effect similar to those of silymarin through enhancing antioxidant mechanisms of its components, predominantly artemetin.

According to the The Vinayaka Mission’s College of Pharmacy study, in the CCl4 induced hepatic injury in albino rats, vitex extract not only is comparable to the standard drug, silymarin (100 mg/kg, p.o.), but also altered serum biomarker enzyme levels which were damage through injection of CCI4, to near normal in treated rats.

Taking together, there is no doubt that Chaste tree berry may process a protective effect in reduced risk of harmful chemicals and drugs induced liver damage, but the injection of the large amount should be taken with care.

Herbal Bilberry Improves Your Lipoprotein Parameters in Human Trials

The lipoprotein profiles or lipoprotein parameters are a general term comprised the traditional lipoprotein profile include total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride.

Total cholesterol is the total amount of cholesterol in your blood, including the low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad”) cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is less than 4 of the low-density lipoprotein to 1 of high-density lipoprotein.

Where low-density lipoprotein is produced by the liver or from food sources needed for the cells to build strong membranes, produce steroid hormones, vitamin D, and bile to aid the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and fluids.

And high-density lipoprotein produced by the liver or from the external sources needed to return the low-density lipoprotein back to the liver.

Triglycerides, an important measure of heart health is the fat in the blood caused by the over-consumption of foods containing fat, carbohydrates, and simple sugars.

Factors that affect your lipoprotein profiles can be unpreventable including age, gender, race, and genetic preposition and preventable such as diet, weight, physical activity, and smoking.

Some researchers suggested that people who are obese are at a substantially higher risk of poor lipoprotein profiles.

Dr. Pandolfi C, the lead scientist wrote, "Lipid pattern has resulted in overlapping both in the two studied populations and in the two subgroups of pre- and postmenopausal women, while greater concentrations of Lp(a), (p < 0.001) and t-PA (p < 0.05) have been found in obese populations vs controls".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the urgency on finding natural sources of the plant-based compound for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers investigated regular consumption of bilberries in CVD risk reduction.

Women (n=25) and men (n=11) selected to the study received 150 g of frozen stored bilberries 3 times a week for 6 weeks. All parameters associated with the risk CVD were measured by standard assays.

In both sexes, the consumption of bilberries led to a decrease in the parameters of lipoprotein profiles, including total cholesterol, LDL-C, TG, and a positive increase in HDL-C.

However, in men, additionally, favorable changes were observed in total cholesterol (P=.004), reduced oxidative stress, and HDL-C, but an increase in LDL-C compared to women group.

In other words, the regular intake of bilberries can be important to reduce CVD risk, by promoting a decrease of LDL-C/TG and an increase of HDL-C.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about bilberry against CVD risk, researchers compared consumed dried sea buckthorn berries (SBs), sea buckthorn oil (SBo), sea buckthorn phenolics ethanol extract mixed with maltodextrin (SBe+MD, 1:1), or frozen bilberries on metabolic profiles.

In a total of 80 women selected to complete this randomized crossover study for 30 d, all interventions induced a significant effect on the overall metabolic profiles, particularly in lipid parameters observed both in participants who had a metabolic profile that reflected higher cardiometabolic risk at baseline (group B) and in participants who had a lower-risk profile (group A).

However, the bilberries treatment group caused beneficial changes in serum lipids and lipoproteins in group B, whereas the opposite was true in group A.

The finding clearly suggested bilberries modulated the parameters of lipids and lipoproteins depending on the risk of CVD.

Dr. Larmo PS, after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "Berry intake has overall metabolic effects, which depend on the cardiometabolic risk profile at baseline (including bilberry)".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the promotion of lipid-protein profiles in reducing the risk of CVD, pending to the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Promotes Gastric Emptying and Smooth Muscle Motility

The digestive system including the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder processes the function to digest foods and transfer the nutrients and fluids to the body's needs.

There is no single cause of the gastrointestinal disorder. Researchers suggested that the cause of the disorder can be attributed directly to the digestive system, or other systemic problems that facilitate the onset of disease.

However, according to the epidemiological studies, bacterial infection, viral infection, inflammation, muscle dysfunction, gallstones, stress, and intake of certain anti-inflammatory drugs are associated with the onset of the acute and chronic digestive disorders.

Dietary factors also play an important in the reduction and promotion of digestive dysfunction. People who are overeating, eating too much fatty food, not consuming enough fiber, and consuming too much alcohol and smoking are at a higher risk of digestive diseases, including ulcers and gastric acid reflux.

Gastric emptying is a test that measures the time that takes for food to empty from the stomach and enter the small intestine. The test is used to find out why your child is vomiting, having stomach pain or not gaining weight.

Gastrointestinal motility is the contraction of the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract.

The gastroprotective effect is a process involved enhancing the function of the digestive system against the harmful organisms in induced chronic digestive disorder.

People with digestive problems may experience certain stomach discomfort, including bloating. constipation. diarrhea. heartburn, nausea and vomiting,......., and belly pain.

Untreated digestive problems over the long term can induce serious ailments of chronic illnesses, as the digestive system no longer performs its functions in provided nutrients and fluids to the needs of the body's cells and tissue.

The results of malnutriments over a long period of time can lead to weakened immune defense and reduced levels of antioxidants produced by tissues of the body in fighting against pathogens,

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of digestive functioning, scientists examined the effects of Taraxacum officinale (TO) is a traditional herbal medicine on gastric emptying (GE) and smooth muscle motility.

According to the administration of ethyl acetate fraction (EA), n-butanol fraction (BF), and aqueous fraction (AF) prepared in succession from 70% ethanol extract (EE) of TO in phenol red meal adopt mice,
* The percentage of GE was 48.8 ± 6.1% (vehicle control), 75.3 ± 6.5% (cisapride positive control), 68.0±6.7% (EE), 53.3±6.0% (EA), 54.1±6.3% (AF), and 86.0±6.5% (BF).

* Furthermore, BF was most effective in accelerating GE, compared to others.

* Moreover, the stimulatory effect of BF on GE was also supported by the observation that BF increased spontaneous contraction of the gastric fundus and antrum and decreased the spontaneous motility of pyloric sphincter in vitro.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "BF seems to be a promising prokinetic agent. BF-induced increase in the contraction of fundus and antrum contributes to an increase in the intra-gastric pressure. BF-induced decrease in the motility of pyloric sphincter contributes to a decrease in the resistance of food from the stomach to the small intestine"

And "The acceleration of GE by BF is likely to be exerted through cholinergic stimulation".

Taken altogether, Dandelion that processed the aforementioned chemical compounds may be considered a gastric emptying and smooth muscle motility remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Normalizes the Enzymes In Blood Clots

Fibrinolysis is the condition associated with the enzymatic breakdown of the fibrin in blood clots.

Where fibrin plays an essential role in hemostasis as both the primary product of the coagulation cascade of fibrinolysis.

In other words, fibrinolysis is a process that prevents blood clots from growing to induce certain health problems such as cardiovascular disease.

Platelet aggregation is a condition characterized by platelets clumping together in the blood. The process also is necessary for the cover of vascular injury. However, overexpression of platelet counts in the blood is problematic to human health.

In other words, the production of blood platelets is to protect tissue injury against infection.
Furthermore, platelet disorders can lead to abnormal bleeding. Most common types of the genetic proposition of platelet disorders including

* Disorder of platelet adhesion, also known as Bernard-Soulier Syndrome is a condition in which the platelets fail to adhere together, leading to frequent bruises, nose bleeds and bleeding in the mouth and gums.

* Disorder of platelet aggregation also known as Glanzmann Thrombasthenia is a condition that the platelets not only fail to cover at the site of an injury but also prolong the bleeding.

* Disorder of platelet secretion is a condition that causes the slows down normal platelet adhesion, aggregation, and repair of the blood vessel.

* Disorder of platelets procoagulant activity, also know as Scott Syndrome is a condition in which the platelets fail to promote activation of the blood clotting proteins.

Conventionally, certain medications with blood-thinning activity such as aspirin (ASA) and other drugs containing aspirin non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and some antibiotics may have a strong implication of the formation of platelets coagulation.

Dr. Wolberg AS in the examination of fibrinolysis in the changes on the local concentrations of pro- and anti-coagulants and cellular activities may affect the clot-forming wrote, "patterns of abnormal thrombin generation produce clots with altered fibrin structure and that these changes are associated with an increased risk of bleeding or thrombosis".

These results strongly outline the importance of fibrin in the formation of a blood clot in the presence of thrombin that converts fibrinogen to fibrin.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of fibrinolysis, researchers examined the influence of bromelain on platelet count, platelet aggregation, and platelet activity in vitro.

The study included blood samples taken from the antecubital vein of 10 healthy male non-smokers.

According to the tested observation, platelet count decreased after incubation with 2.5 and 5 mg bromelain/ml.

The levels of ADP and TRAP-6 associated with platelet aggregation were inhibited after incubation with 2.5 mg or 5 mg compared to control.

Interestingly, according to the flow cytometry, the percentage of the total number of platelets or unstimulated CD62P positive platelets.

In other words, under normal conditions, bromelain does not have any effect on unstimulated CD62P positive platelets even with higher incubation with 5 mg bromelain/ml compared to control.

However, after TRAP-6 stimulation with platelet aggregation, the incubation with 5 mg bromelain/ml led to a remarkable decrease, compared to the untreated control.

The changes of CD62P (TRAP-stimulated) and the results of platelet aggregation after incubation with bromelain in vitro may demonstrate the potential of bromelain as a substance for platelet inhibition.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The changes of CD62P (TRAP-stimulated) and the results of platelet aggregation after incubation with bromelain in vitro may demonstrate the potential of bromelain as a substance for platelet inhibition".

These results suggested that bromelain has a strong effect on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease associated with platelet aggregation.

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of fibrinolysis,, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry in the Promotion of Digestive Health

The digestive system included the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder play a critical role to maintain the body normal function by providing nutrients and fluids to the body and remove waste through the secretary system.

Digestion is a process of the digestive system by breaking down food for nutrients through mechanical and enzymatic action.

Gut Microbiota is a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract.

Under normal conditions, gut microbiota plays a critical role in overall health, including improving the absorption of the dietary nutrients of the digestive system, protecting the body against xenobiotics and drug toxicity through facilitating the excretion.

Futhermore, the gut microbiota also involved in the maintenance of the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, gut microbiota enhances the epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of intestinal in nutrients adsorption.

In immunomodulation, gut microbiota interacts with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibits the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

However, imbalanced of the ratio of gut microbiota may have a negative on human health and diseases.

Dr. Yu-Jie Zhang wrote, "Gut bacteria are an important component of the microbiota ecosystem in the human gut, which is colonized by 1014 microbes, ten times more than the human cells. Gut bacteria play an important role in human health, such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function".

And, "However, they can also be potentially harmful due to the change of their composition when the gut ecosystem undergoes abnormal changes in the light of the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle. Dysbiosis of the gut bacteria communities can cause many chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism".

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of digestive health, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium berry fruit in modulating gut microbiota function.

According to the tested differentiation, cranberry anthocyanidins only interfered with the colonization of the gut by Escherichia coli in vitro but also attenuated gut barrier dysfunction caused by dietary insults in vivo.

The efficacy of cranberry anthocyanidins in the promotion of gut microbiota in the flavor of the good bacterias was attributed by the synergic activity between these proanthocyanidins, other cranberry components such as isoprenoids and xyloglucans.

Furthermore, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also have a strong effect on bacterial adhesion, coaggregation, and biofilm formation that may contribute clinical benefits on gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections,

Additionally, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also processed strong anti-inflammatory actions by mediating the gut microbiome.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of the digestive health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Chaste Tree Berry Expressed Various Mechanisms in Inhibition of Leukemia

Oral Administrated ripe fruit of Vitex agnus-castus (Vitex) may reduce the risk of various types of solid tumor cells, particularly leukemia.

Leukemia is a condition of abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

According to the Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences, casticin,, the major chemical compound found in extract from the ripe fruit of Vitex agnus-castus (Vitex) exhibited strong cytotoxic activities against on leukemia cell lines, HL-60 and U-937 in dose depending manner.

Additionally, the study also expressed an interest result as the levels of cytotoxicity of Vitex/casticin were largely attributed to the degree of differentiation of leukemia cells depending to cancer cell line maturity. in compared to the HL-60 cell line with less mature U-937 cell line.

Dr. Kikuchi H, the lead author said, "casticin accounted for approximate 1% weight of Vitex. Dose-dependent cytotoxicity of Vitex and casticin was observed in both cell lines, and HL-60 cells were more sensitive to the cytotoxicity of Vitex/casticin compared to U-937 cells".

In further study, casticin, also displayed a sigmificant anti leukemia activity cells through expression molecular mechanism. apoptosis and cell cycle arrest observed through different assays.

The application of casticin yielded a result of cancer cell death at 75.3% at 12 in G2 phase in tumor cells cycle division, increased and subsequently declined to 27% at 48 h which was an indication of leukemic cell death via apoptosis and mitotic catastrophe.

Other study in support to the above differentiation, suggested that the extract from the ripe fruit of Vitex angus-castus (Vitex), inhibited the leukemia cell lines probably due to other mechanism such as significant decrease levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and level of gp91(phox), an important component of NADPH oxidase, in production of oxidation, and mediated cytotoxicity in HL-60 cells by regulating ROS generation...

Taking together, Chaste tree berry has a significant implication in reduced risk and treatment of leukemia through number of mechanisms, but intake of large amount should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.

Turmeric Protects the Nerves Against the Onset of Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of patients with diabetes associated with nerve damage, ranging from pain and numbness in your legs and feet to problems with your digestive system.

Most cases of diabetic neuropathy are involved in diabetics who have a history of hyperglycemia caused by long-term high levels of glucose in the bloodstream, urinary tract, blood vessels, and heart.

Diabetic neuropathy can be classified into 4 main types, including.

* Peripheral neuropathy is the most common type of diabetic neuropathy, affecting the nerves that control the feet and legs first, followed by the hands and arms.

* The autonomic neuropathy that affects the nerves that control the heart, bladder, stomach, intestines, sex organs, and eyes.

* Radiculoplexus neuropathy found mostly in older patients affects nerves that control the thighs, hips, buttocks, or legs.

* Mononeuropathy, or focal neuropathy also found commonly in older patients affects the nerves that control the face, middle of the body (torso) or leg.

The exact causes of diabetic neuropathy are totally depending on the type of neuropathy. However, damage of nerves and blood vessels in the affected area has been found to induce by overtime, uncontrolled high blood sugar.

In other words, diabetic neuropathy is preventable by keeping the blood glucose in the healthy range.

Dr. Michael Greger M.D. FACLM in the article "the best diet for diabetic neuropathy" wrote, "
(By examing) people eating different diets found that nine months or more on a strict plant-based diet appeared to remove the trans fat from their bodies (or at least their butts). Their pain, however, didn’t take nine months to get better—it got better in days".

In the explanation of the results, the researcher continued, "More likely, it was due to an improvement in blood flow. “[N]erve biopsies in diabetics with severe progressive neuropathy…have shown small vessel disease within the nerve. There are blood vessels within our nerves that can get clogged up too. The oxygen levels in the nerves of diabetics were found to be lower than even the levels of oxygenated blood".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy researchers examined the turmeric antioxidant property, anti-inflammatory, CNS depressant effect, antibacterial and antifungal property.

According to the results of the experiment, turmeric inhibited the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy by improving the antioxidant in the reduction of the level of oxidative stress associated with the occurrence of the present complication.

Furthermore, turmeric also enhanced the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity against the spread of infection.

In other words, turmeric inhibited diabetic neuropathy through a number of mechanisms involved in the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity.

In order to review more information about turmeric effect, researchers investigated Nishamalaki (NA), a combination of Curcuma longa and Emblica officinalis in the prevention of diabetic neuropathy.

The study included diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetic Wistar rats under treatment of 12 weeks.

Selected rats were randomly divided into group I (Control) vehicle-treated consists of 6 rats and
group II-VII Diabetic Control, NA low dose, NA High dose, Glibenclamide, Pioglitazone and Epalrestat respectively.

Diabetes-induced in 36 Wistar rats with Streptozotocin (STZ) (35mg/kg) intraperitoneally followed by High Fat High Fructose diet. After confirmation of the development of diabetes; rats divided into six groups as the aforementioned division.

Compared to other treatment groups, Nishamalaki (NA) not only controlled hyperglycemia and reduced lipid levels but also effectively prevented the development of diabetic neuropathy.

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other herbal medicine may be considered supplements for the prevention of diabetic neuropathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Treatment of Intestinal Metaplasia (IM) and Atypical Hyperplasia (AH)

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role in aiding the digestive system by secreting acid and enzymes that digest food induced by the stomach muscles that contract periodically, to churn the food and enhance digestion.

Atypical hyperplasia is a precancerous condition characterized by the accumulation of abnormal cells.

Intestinal metaplasia is a pre gastric cancer condition caused by the change of cells in the stomach.

The exact causes of the condition are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that smoking and infection caused by H. pylori infection, genetic preposition, and environmental factors are some risk factors associated with the onset of intestinal metaplasia.

Gastric cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular and uncontrollable cell growth in the stomach lining in the beginning. At the advanced stage, the malignant cells can travel a distance away through blood and fluid circulation to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Researchers do not know why some people with the same health condition are susceptible to the risk of gastric cancer, while others do not. The exact causes of gastric cancer are also unknown. However, some researchers suggested that Age, diet, and stomach disease, such as can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer.

Both atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer share the common symptoms of stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite,... and indigestion. However, common symptoms of unexpected weight loss and stomach ulcers can only be found in gastric cancer while iron deficiency anemia is found in the majority of patients with atrophic gastritis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).

Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of 67%.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of gastric diseases, scientists examined the efficacy of Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) decoction on intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH).

Where XWYP is a traditional Chinese Medicine formula containing Smilax glabrate, Hedyotis diffusae, Taraxacum mongolicum, Caesalpinia sappan, Paeonia alba, Cyperus rotundus, Bletilla striata, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, etc.

According to the results of 138 cases of intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH) of the gastric mucosa of chronic gastritis that was treated by Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) orally 5-7g, for a period from 2-4 months, compared to control, the decoction showed a significant effect rate of IM was 91.3% and that of the AH was 92.16% compared to the control group of 21.3% and 14.46% respectively.

More precisely, XWYP not only had marked therapeutic effects for IM and AH but also showed no toxic effects in the animal experiments revealed no toxic effect,

These results strongly suggested that a safety guarantee was provided for its clinical application.

Taken altogether, Dandelion in a combination with other Chinese medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia (AH), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
