Herbal Turmeric, A Natural And Potential Treatment of Chagas Heart Disease

Chagas disease (CD) is a medical condition caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi.

According to the statistics, approximately 6 million people worldwide are living with Chagas disease. The majority of patients reside in Mexico, Central America, and South America,

Chagas heart disease can be classified into
* Acute Chagas heart disease is characterized by the inflammation of the heart, gastrointestinal tract (mainly esophagus and colon), meninges, and central and peripheral nervous tissues. Untreated symptomatic patients in this phase may face a roughly 1% chance of death in the acute period, usually the result of severe myocarditis or meningoencephalitis

* The indeterminate form of Chagas heart disease is characterized by small foci of mild chronic myocarditis, with interstitial edema, early fibrosis, and infiltration by lymphocytes, macrophages, and plasma cells. Most patients with the indeterminate form will progress to the chronic form of Chagas heart disease such as dilated cardiomyopathy, at a rate of 1.85% to 7% annually.

* The chronic form of Chagas heart disease is characterized by cardiomegaly and increased cardiac mass, thinning of the ventricular walls, and aneurysmal lesions in various regions of the LV and right ventricle (RV).

Dr. Edimar Alcides Bocchi, the lead scientist in the treatment of Chagas heart disease wrote, "Pharmacological treatment and antiarrhythmic therapy for ChHD is mostly based on results for other etiologies. Heart transplantation is an established, valuable therapeutic option in refractory ChHD".

And, "Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators are indicated for the prevention of secondary sudden cardiac death. Specific etiological treatments should be revisited and reserved for select patients. Understanding and management of ChHD need improvement, including the development of randomized trials".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of Chagas heart disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi., researchers examined the anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties of curcumin (Cur).

The study included oral therapy with Cur on T. cruzi-mediated cardio-vasculopathy in acutely infected mice and in vitro, the response of parasite-infected human microvascular endothelial cells treated with this phytochemical.

According to the tested assays, oral Cur therapy showed a reduced inflammatory cell infiltration of myocardial arteries without lowering parasite levels in the tested infected mice.

Furthermore, mice treated with Cur showed significantly decreased vessel inflammation scores (p < 0.001), and vascular permeabilities compared to mice treated with the phosphate-buffered saline-receiving group.

Moreover, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and ET-1 secretion involved in vascular constriction were also inhibited by the treatment of Cur.

Additionally, proteins and signaling pathways that promote the generation of inflammatory agents are also inhibited by the injection of Cur.

In other words, curcumin (Cur) exerted the anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties against parasite-induced the onset of Chagas heart disease.

Based on the findings researchers wrote, "These findings identify new perspectives for exploring the potential of Cur-based interventions to ameliorate Chagas heart disease".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Chagas heart disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Inhibits Parameters Associated with β-thalassemia

Anemia is a health condition in which our body do not have enough red blood cells or less than the normal quantity of hemoglobin in the blood that carries the function of delivering oxygen and nutrient to the tissues.

Patients with Beta-thalassemia minor have a slight lowering of the beta hemoglobin level in the blood similar to those with mild iron-deficiency anemia.

Beta thalassemia can be classified into
* Thalassemia minor, the mild case of anemia. is the most common anemia in people of Mediterranean descent. The blood cells of patients with thalassemia minor are smaller than normal blood cells and easily die off, causing not enough new blood cells to replace the loss of red blood cells.

* Thalassemia major
Thalassemia major also called Cooley's anemia is an inherited disorder that affects the production of normal hemoglobin. Thalassemia major is a deadly disease without frequent blood transfusions, people with this kind of anemia may not survive because of iron building up in heart and other organs, resulting in heart failure.

Most common symptoms of beta thalassemia are fatigue, weakness, or shortness of breath, a pale appearance or yellow color to the skin (jaundice), irritability, deformities of the facial bone, slow growth, a swollen abdomen, and dark urine.

If you have experienced persistently the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor for preventive measures.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural treatment for anemia, researchers examined the effects of curcumin, the active polyphenol in turmeric, on iron overload, hepcidin level, and liver function in β-thalassemia major patients.

The double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on 68 β-thalassemia major patients, randomly divided into 2 groups to receive either 500 mg curcumin capsules (total: 1,000 mg) twice daily or a placebo for 12 weeks.

Based on the observation of the tested assays, the curcumin group showed a significant decrease in levels of nontransferrin bound iron (NTBI), aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) compared to the placebo group.

In other words, turmeric protects the integrity of the red blood by reducing the cellular oxidative stress and inhibiting the iron toxicity in the β-thalassemia major patients without affecting the levels of hepcidin and other variables.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " Curcumin administration alleviated the iron burden and liver dysfunction by reducing NTBI, ALT, and AST levels in patients with β-thalassemia major".

Additionally, according to the evaluation of the Mahidol University on 10 β-thalassemia/Hb E patients treated with 500 mg curcuminoids daily for 12 months, injection of the supplement showed significantly decreased intensity in thalassemic plasma, compared to those of normal subjects, including increased levels of plasma levels of proteins associated with the condition and reduced levels of oxidative damage.

More precisely, serum non-transferrin bound iron associated with iron overload, platelet factor-3-like activity, oxidative stress parameters, and antioxidant enzymes were also improved after curcuminoids treatment.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of β-thalassemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Fennel In Reduced Symptoms and Treatment of Estrogenic Deficiency Related Diseases

Fennel may have a potential effect in increased plant base estrogenic levels in reduced risk of estrogen-related diseases, some scientists suggested.

Estrogen is a primary female sex hormone, responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the evaluation of the fennel estrogenic effect in inhibiting the increased ectopic uterine motility in facilitated symptoms including pain in primary dysmenorrhea, researchers found that compared to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the induction of severe adverse effects used for treatment in long-term therapy, application of fennel essential oil (FEO) of LD(50, 1326 mg/kg) in a rat model, exerted a therapeutic effect in reduced expression of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) in induced muscle contraction.

Further analysis suggested that fennel essential oil reduced the intensity of oxytocin and PGE(2) induced uterine muscle contractions significantly (25 and 50 microg/ml for oxytocin and 10 and 20 microg/ml PGE(2), respectively without inducing mortality in tested subjects.

Abnormal production of prostaglandins E2 was found to associate to the intensity of symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea, including vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and excessive uterine contraction.

According to the P. G. Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, acetone extract isolated from Foeniculum vulgare Mill., seeds at different dose levels (50/ug, 150/ug and 250/ug/100gm body wt.) exerted a potential and positive estrogenic activity in increased nucleic acids and protein concentration and organ weights, particularly in the medium and high doses.

The above differentiation were supported by the study of "Effect of Foeniculum vulgare Mill. seed extract on the genital organs of male and female rats" conducted by Dr. Malini T and colleagues.

According to the results, fennel estrogenic effect in oral administration of acetone extract of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) seeds for 15 days in male rats, exerted a significant malformation of the male reproductive tract including decreased in testes through inhibited Leydig cell production of testosterone and disrupted fluid reabsorption in the efferent ductules via the ERα and vas deferens in transported sperm from the testicle to the urethra.

Moreover, the application of the extract also demonstrated an increased volume of seminal vesicles and prostate gland and decreased activities of acid and alkaline phosphatase in all these regions, including bones, intestines, pancreas, and kidneys.

In female rats, ingestion of acetone extract for 10 days showed a strong effect in the expression of estrogenic effect through the observation by vaginal cornification, the test of appearance of cornified epithelial cells in a vaginal smear for confirmation of the presence of high levels of estrogen.

The application also catalyzed the imbalanced production of sex hormones in the female estrus cycle.

At moderate doses, the seeds caused an increase in the weight of mammary glands by overexpression of estrogen circulation in precipitated a negative effect in regulated systemic mammogenic factors (prolactin, growth hormone), and directed influence of the mammary tissue, such as stromal components and epithelial cells.
At higher doses, fennel seeds increased the weight of the oviduct, endometrium, myometrium, cervix, and vagina.

Taken together, fennel may be considered a functional food for reduced symptoms of estrogen deficiency syndrome and combined with the standard medicine for the treatment of estrogenic-related diseases.

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi Effects on Endometrial Cancer

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe. The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.

The endometrium is the inner lining of the mammalian uterus and is very susceptible to hormone change, particularly during the menstrual cycle. Endometrial cancer is a late adulthood cancer defined as a condition in which the cells of the endometrial lining of the uterus have growth uncontrollable or become cancerous as a result of the alternation of cells' DNA. It's the fourth most common cancer among women overall, after breast cancer, lung cancer, and bowel cancer.

The Ingredients It contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

The benefits
Ursolic acid, a pentacyclic triterpene acid, extracted from bearberry is found to be effective in inhibiting the growth of endometrial cancer cell HEC108 line, in a dose- and time-dependent manner. As exposure to Ursolic acid decreased the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein levels (member of the Bcl-2 family of regulator proteins that regulate cell death) but increased Bax expression (upregulated by the tumor suppressor protein p53,) through a mitochondrial pathway, that induced apoptosis of endometrial cancer HEC108 line. Other in the study of the same but within endometrial cancer SNG-II cells, ursolic acid strongly inhibited the growth of SNG-II cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The induced apoptotic processes in the endometrial cancer SNG-II cells is also involved mitochondrial pathways and Bcl-2 family proteins.

The Side effect
1. Overdoses may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, including cause nausea, vomiting, etc., fever, chills, severe back pain, ringing in the ears, etc.
2. The herb may interact with other medicine, including diuretics
3. Do not use the herb in newborns, children, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without approval from the related field specialist.
4. Etc.
