Chamomile, the Anti Hypertensive Natural Whole Herb Medicine?

Chamomile may be the next potential herbal medicine for reduced risk and treatment of hypertension, new studies suggested.

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae, used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If it stays high over time it can damage the body in many ways.

According to the UFRPNPE B. P., Chamaemelum Nobile aqueous extract (CNAE) exhibited a hypotensive effect in high blood pressure rats.

Dr. Zeggwagh NA, the lead researcher said, " Single oral administration of CNAE (140 mg/kg) produced a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in systolic blood pressure (SBP) after 24 h of the administration " and "Daily oral administration of CNAE (140 mg/kg) during 3 weeks produced a significant reduction in SBP in the day 8 (p < 0.01) of treatment"

In fact, chamomile is not one of the herbal recommended for the treatment of hypertension. but I do believe, the antihypertensive property of chamomile may attribute to its antiplatelet and cholesterol-lowering activities.

Ellen Douglas, not the researcher in the study said, "Chamomile is not one of the specific recommended alternative therapies to address high blood pressure. But for people who experience blood pressure spikes due to stress, the tea may contribute indirect benefits".

Herbal Cayenne, the Natural Whole Food Medicine for Reduced Risk of Airway Inflammation

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases, including inflammation.

Cayenne, has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation caused by the invasion of microbial organisms and allergens.

Red pepper (Capsicum baccatum) extracts, according to the study by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), exerted its anti-inflammatory properties through in inhibiting the neutrophil migration induced by carrageenan (Cg).

In an animal study, the ethanolic and butanol extracts (200mg/kg, p.o.) presented a significant anti-inflammatory activity through their antioxidant phenolic and flavonoid compounds against oxidative and inflammation-related pathological processes, including airway inflammation.

β-Defensin, members of the antimicrobial peptide found in cayenne inhibited the expression of the mRNA of anti-inflammatory cytokine during the bacterial invasion, through stimulating immunomodulatory effects.

Other research suggested that the anti-inflammatory effect induced by red pepper may be by inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine production at the inflammatory sites, such as the upper airway.

Regular intake of Cayenne pepper can improve the immune system against microbial infection and reduced the risk of airway inflammation but overdose is found to induce toxicity.

Turmeric, The Kitchen Spice Which Cures Rheumatoid Arthritis in Vivo with No Side Effects

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a type of arthritis associated with inflammation that affects mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many older adults.

According to the CDC, Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.

A cross-sectional population-based study of 1042 patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed that RA patients had an increased risk of death from various causes.

The symptoms of RA that affect
* The feet and joints
Patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often associates to valgus deformities of the feet and deformities of gait due to body function in an effort to support the collapsing longitudinal arch of the foot.

* The gait
Dr. Weiss RJ. and the research team at the Karolinska Institutet showed that the kinematic and kinetic gait changes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients are the result of a significant reduction in joint motions, joint moments, such as decreased hip flexion-extension range, hip abduction, knee flexion-extension range,

* The hands
The deformation of RA's hands can be described through the defects of bone ankylosis as a result of bone damage to the prolonged onset of the disease.

* The Muscle strength
The reduced muscle strength in patients with RA may contribute to the prevalence of functional limitations physically,

Other symptoms of RA include
* Rheumatoid Nodules
Rheumatoid nodules, lump on the skin, closed to the joint have been found to affect the joints of patients with rheumatoid nodules.

* Conjunctival nodules
Although is rare in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the appearance of the nodules may exhibit the
severity of the underlying disease.

 Morning stiffness
Morning stiffness, as a marker of inflammatory activity in reflecting functional disability and pain is a very common symptom of patients in early rheumatoid arthritis.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, you may have RA. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find potential treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), researchers investigated the protective activity of two different doses of a mixture of ginger and turmeric rhizomes powder suspended in distilled water (GTaq) against inflammation in an animal model.

Rats adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) by a single intradermal injection of 0.1 mL of Complete Freund's adjuvant (containing heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis) into the palmar surface of the left hind paw were given orally and daily (for 28 consecutive days) distilled water as vehicle, indomethacin (1.0 mg/kg body weight), or GTaq (200 or 400 mg/kg body weight) from the day of arthritis induction.

Suspended in distilled water (GTaq) is more effective (4.2-38.4% higher, P < 0.05-0.001) than indomethacin (a non-steroidal/anti-inflammatory drug) in alleviating the loss in body weight gain, the histopathological changes in ankle joints.

Blood leukocytosis and thrombocytosis associated with the inflammation also reduced by suspended in distilled water (GTaq).

Rish factors involved the risk of cardiovascular disease and kidney damage rats adjuvant-induced arthritis were also decreased by the injection of GTaq.

Further differentiation of the anti-RA activity of GTaq, researchers found that the efficacy of the mixture was attributed to the increasing the food intake and decreasing the systemic inflammation associated with the inhibition of polyarthritis, oxidative stress, and dyslipidemia.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Ginger-turmeric rhizomes mixture may be effective against RA severity and complications as shown in an AIA rat model".

In order to obtain more information about turmeric anti RA activity, researchers investigated the curcuminoid-containing turmeric extracts in the prevention or treatment of arthritis using streptococcal cell wall (SCW)-induced arthritis.

According to the tested assays, essential oil-depleted turmeric fraction containing 41% of the three major curcuminoids was efficacious in preventing joint inflammation at the start of the disease but not after, the onset of joint inflammation.

Interestingly, compared to other curcumin treatment groups, a commercial sample containing 94% of the three major curcuminoids was more potent in preventing arthritis in the same dose per weight.

These results strongly suggested only the three major curcuminoids found in turmeric process antiarthritic effect, compared to the treatment of the whole food.

In other words, all compounds except three major curcuminoids of the crude turmeric extract may inhibit this protective effect.

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of RA, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Low Caffeine Green Tea Reduces Stress and Improves Sleep Quality, Scientists Say

Scientists may have found a beverage with the potential to improve stress and sleep quality, some studies suggested.

According to the report published in Sleep Health. sleep quality is classified depending on the criteria of the person sleep pattern, including
* Sleeping more time while in bed (at least 85 percent of the total time)

*Falling asleep in 30 minutes or less

*Waking up no more than once per night; and

* Being awake for 20 minutes or less after initially falling asleep

Sleep disturbances are encompassed disorders classified by the initiating and maintaining sleep (DIMS, insomnias), disorders of excessive somnolence (DOES), disorders of sleep-wake schedule, and dysfunctions associated with sleep, sleep stages, or partial arousals (parasomnias), the
Clinical Methods: The History, Physical, and Laboratory Examinations. 3rd edition wrote.

According to the statistic, over 50 million Americans or 1 in 2,5 adults suffer from a sleep disorder and acute and chronic insomnia affects at least 30% and 10% of Americans, respectively.

Although researchers do not why people with the same health conditions, carrying the same tasks, some are susceptible to sleep disorder, while others do not, they do know that certain risk factors such as gender, age, people with emotional and psychological problems, frequent travelers, shift-worker, long-term under emotional stress are associated with the early onset of the condition,

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
In the concerns of injection of green tea in the risk of stress and sleep quality, researchers at the University of Shizuoka, launched an investigation to determine the effect green tea with lowered caffeine, low-caffeine green tea, on stress and sleep of the elderly.

In the 10 subjects are included in the study, participants drank five cups/day of standard green tea for 1 week. Subsequently, they drank five cups/day of low-caffeine green tea for 2 weeks.

After measuring the salivary α-amylase activity (sAA) and sleep stages were measured using portable electroencephalography (n = 7, 6 female and 1 male), researchers found that

* The level of sAA in the morning (sAAm) was significantly lower when the participants drank low-caffeine green tea than standard green tea.

* In those participants whose sAAm was lowered by the ingestion of low-caffeine green tea, some sleep parameters improved.

* These results suggested that the daily ingestion of low-caffeine green tea may be a beneficial tool for improving the quality of sleep of the elderly via the suppression of stress.

Where salivary alpha-amylase levels are correlated to sleep-disordered breathing

Furthermore, in the differentiation of the effect of low caffeine green tea consumption on the risk of sleep quality on middle-aged individuals (n = 20, mean age 51.3 ± 6.7 years) in a double-blind crossover design, with standard green tea (SGT) used as the control and low caffeine green tea teas (≥300 mL/day), which were eluted with room temperature water, were consumed over a period of seven days after a single washout term, researchers indicated that
* The level of salivary α-amylase activity (sAA), a stress marker, was significantly lower in participants that consumed LCGT (64.7 U/mL) than in those that consumed SGT (73.9 U/mL).

* Sleep quality was higher in participants that consumed a larger quantity of LCGT.

* In addition, a self-diagnostic check for accumulated fatigue was significantly lower in those participants that consumed LCGT than SGT.

Dr. Unno K, the lead author at the final report said, " LCGT intake can reduce stress in middle-aged individuals and improve their quality of sleep. The reduction in caffeine is suggested to be a valid reason for enhancing the anti-stress effect of green tea".

Taken all together, it is safe to suggest that moderate consumption of low caffeine green tea may have a profound effect on improving sleep quality by reducing the levels of stress.

Chamomile, the Natural Whole Herb Medicine for Reduced Risk and Treatment of Gastric Ulcers

Scientists from the respectable institution may have found an ingredient from herbal chamomile for the treatment of Gastric ulcers with little or no side effects.

According to the King Khalid University, in ethanol-induced Gastric ulcers, Chamomilla Recutita (ACE), exhibited the expression of the antioxidant glutathione in regulation of the herbal mediated effect on the gastric ulcer.

Dr. Al-Hashem FH, the author of the study, said," Compared to non-ACE treated rats, the ulcer index (UI) decreased significantly in a dose-dependent manner in treated animals" and " glutathione(GSH) levels fell significantly after ethanol treatment; this decrease was prevented by ACE treatment".

Gastric ulcer, a type of peptic ulcer is a condition of localized tissue erosion in the lining the stomach, inducing symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, septic shock, Dyspepsia, Blood in stool, bleeding, etc.

The herbal medicine Alpha-bisabolol, a bioactive component, in the animal study also inhibited gastric mucosal damage. Oral doses of 50 and 100 mg=kg markedly attenuated the gastric lesions induced by ethanol to the extent of 87% and 96% in the activation of cellular metabolism.

Furthermore, the commercial preparation (STW 5, Iberogast), containing the extracts of bitter candy tuft, lemon balm leaf, chamomile flower, caraway fruit, peppermint leaf, licorice root, Angelica root, milk thistle fruit and greater celandine herb, tested in patients with gastric ulcer, not only lower the gastric acidity but also inhibited the secondary hyperacidity.

In ethanol-induced acute gastric mucosal injury in rats, Matricaria chamomilla L. (Compositae) hydroalcoholic extract (MCE) exerted a protective effect against ethanol-induced gastric mucosal lesions, depending upon the reduction in lipid peroxidation and augmentation in antioxidant activity. Dr. Cemek M, the lead researcher at the Afyon Kocatepe University suggested.

There is no doubt that chamomile and combination of chamomile with other herbal medicines are found to express gastrointestinal effects in reduced risk and treatment of gastric ulcers. But effective doses should only be prescribed by herbalists to prevent toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric, the Natural Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Complications

Diabetes is a chronic and medical condition characterized by the inability of the body to use insulin to convert glucose in the bloodstream to energy.

In other words, diabetes is a result of insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose caused by either a reduced number of beta cells in the pancreas or insulin receptor site clogged up with fat or cholesterol.

Diabetic complications are any diseases associated with hyperglycemia if the blood glucose is not managed properly. Patients with diabetes may induce a number of complications including cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and foot ulcer.

By managing your blood glucose properly and daily, the risk of diabetic complications can be reduced in diabetics by

*Taking your medication as directed.

*Keeping tight control of your blood sugar or managing the blood glucose in the required range

* Eating healthy with moderate exercise to protect your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol. Overweight, blood pressure and cholesterol are some of the conditions associated with increased risk of diabetes complications.

* Get regular checkups

* Quit smoking

If you are following the aforementioned suggestion, you may do just fine in the prevention of diabetes complications.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the prevention of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effect of curcumin plethora of biologic and pharmacologic properties associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
Curcumin protected diabetics by its pleiotropic regulation of redox balance of cell and inflammation

In other words, curcumin exerted its diabetic complications by induction of various pathologic conditions, including detoxification and anti-inflammation.

In vivo, curcumin protected the diabetes-induced animal by protecting the micro-vascular function against the onset of coronary microvascular disease.

Dr. Jeenger MK, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, SAID, "the importance of curcumin in addition to the existing therapeutic modalities in diabetic complications".

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana), the Anti Breast Cancer Functional Herb

Herbal Cascara sagrada may be the next generation of natural chemotherapy for the treatment of breast cancer, according to studies.

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue, including the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the advanced, the large tumor may press on the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading bleeding and severe pain. Cancer cells from the breast can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs at this stage.

The most common breast cancer secondary metastasis is the liver, brain, bones, or lungs.

According to the statistics, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during a lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of breast cancer. However, family and personal history, women with dense breast tissue, use of hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives, genetic preposition, particularly BRCA1 and 2, tall adult heigh are some prevalent risk factors of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that the increase in the prevalence of breast cancer in overweight and obesity is also a major concern of the scientists' community.

Dr. Manuel Picon‐Ruiz, the lead scientists in the observation of obesity in risk of breast cancer wrote, "Obesity is associated both with a higher risk of developing breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women, and with worse disease outcome for women of all ages" and "... the effects of obesity to increase local and circulating proinflammatory cytokines, promote tumor angiogenesis and stimulate the most malignant cancer stem cell population to drive cancer growth, invasion, and metastasis".

And, "The effects of recent lifestyle interventions to decrease sex steroids, insulin/insulin‐like growth factor‐1 pathway activation and inflammatory biomarkers associated with worse breast cancer outcomes in obesity also are discussed. Although many observational studies indicate that exercise with weight loss is associated with improved breast cancer outcome".

The results strongly suggested that the risk of breast cancer is significantly elevated in the obese population compared to healthy adults.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America, it's bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.

Researchers on clarification of the effects of a bioactive ingredient emodin found abundantly in herbal Cascara Sagrada and Rhubarb. against breast cancer, examined the compound activity on estrogen receptor α (ERα).

Application of emodin demonstrated the capability in inhibiting breast cancer cell proliferation by suppressing the ER α protein levels, by blocking the ER α transcriptional activation.

Furthermore, emodin treatment led to the dissociation of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) which plays a critical role in stabilizing the proteins against heat stress and ER α and increased ER α ubiquitination in initiation cell degradation.

Dr. Huang PH and colleagues in the final report wrote, "emodin,....specifically suppress breast cancer cell proliferation by targeting ER α protein stability through distinct mechanisms".

In order to reveal the additional information of emodin in the inhibition of breast cancer, researchers investigated the anticancer effects of emodin on growth inhibition, apoptosis induction and the expression of apoptosis-related genes in MCF-7 cells.

Emodin showed significant growth inhibitory effects on MCF-7 cells with IC₅₀ = 7.22 µg/ml (∼30 μM) and exerted a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on the colony-forming ability of MCF-7 cells with IC₅₀ = 7.60 µg/ml (∼30 µM).

The bioactive compound induced breast cancer death observed by the single-strand DNA breakage and DNA fragmentation, in emodin-treated MCF-7 cells.

Moreover, emodin efficacy in causing breast cancer cell apoptosis was attributed to the activation of the gene expression involved the modulation of the immune response to stress and inhibition of the proteins associated with cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Dr. Li WY, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "emodin could induce growth inhibition and apoptosis in MCF-7 cells through the modulation of the expression of apoptosis-related genes".

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) processed bioactive emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea Polyphenols (GrTPs), the Bioactive Ingredient Which Protects Sperm Quality and Integrity Against Infertility, Scientists Find

Scientists may have found a beverage bioactive compound that protects the sperm quality and integrity, without inducing any side effects, some studies found,

Infertility is a condition characterized by the inability to get pregnant after 12 months of frequent and unprotected sex of a couple. Women who cannot carry the pregnancy to term are also considered as infertile.

According to the statistic, approximately 10% of women in their reproductive years are having the difficulty of conceiving or carrying the pregnancy to term.

The most common causes of infertility in men are low sperm count, sperm motility and abnormal sperm.
What causes abnormal sperm production is unknown. Researchers do not know why people with the same health conditions and family history, are having abnormal sperm production while others do not.

However, researchers do not that certain prevalent risk factors including physical and medical conditions, such as undescended testicle and diabetes long-term intakes of a certain medicine, such as anti-inflammatory drug and hormone imbalance such as testosterone deficiency are associated with abnormal sperm production.
Genetic preposition such as chromosomal conditions that affect sperm production also plays a major role in elevating the onset of abnormal sperm production.

Age, obesity, use of illicit drugs, excessive alcohol drinking and long-term exposure to chemicals are the common causes of abnormal sperm production.

In term of diet, researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the study "Diet and men's fertility: does diet affect sperm quality?" wrote, "men may be encouraged to use antioxidant supplements and to follow dietary patterns favoring the consumption of seafood, poultry, nuts, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Evidence is strongest for recommending the use of antioxidant supplements to men in couples undergoing infertility treatment-although the specific antioxidants and doses remain unclear-and increasing consumption of omega-3 fatty acids from fish and nuts".

These results suggested that men who follow the diet with high in saturated and trans fat, intake of a large amount of red meat and processed food and less in fruits, nuts and vegetables are at a higher risk of sperm abnormality.

In the concerns of highly sensitive of sperm cells to reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are produced during cellular oxidation, researchers at the joint study led by the Anhui Agricultural University launched an investigation to examine the green tea polyphenols (GrTPs) effect in the protection of the integrity of the sperm.

Before the application of green tea s (GrTPs) researchers found that oxidative stress has numerous effects, in the increased apoptosis, reduced motion parameters, and sperm integrity in the tested subjects with overexpression of free radicals.

The increased ROS levels probably are the results of antioxidant enzymes produced by the tested subjects being suppressed due to some unknown mechanisms.
Oral administered green tea polyphenols (GrTPs), showed to restore and increase the quality of male gametes, mostly via the capability of catechins in the reduction of ROS production.

Further analysis also suggested that GrTPs processed antioxidant properties that not only restore the abnormal sperm production caused by overexpression of ROS but also improve major semen parameters, such as sperm concentration, motility, morphology, DNA damage, fertility rate, and gamete quality.

These unique properties of green tea catechins in improving the male reproductive health suggested green tea polyphenols (GrTPs) may be considered a functional food in reducing the risk of abnormal sperm quality in many parameters.

Dr, Rahman SU, the lead scientist at the final report, said, "the therapeutic effects of GrTPs against infertility, their possible mechanisms of action, and recommended supportive therapy for improving fertility in humans and in animals".

Additionally, in the concerns of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) presented in high concentrations in the genital tracts of males that affects compromised vitality, increased morphological defects and decreased sperm motility, researchers launched an investigation to examine whether green tea catechins protect the sperm quality and integrity over the expression of ROS.

After taking into account levels of oxidative stress before and after the application of green tea catechin, researchers wrote,
* Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major bioactive compound in green tea inhibited the expression of ROS through its strong antioxidant activity.

* Green tea catechins potentially improve sperm quality and integrity.

Dr. Roychoudhury S, the lead author said, " (These results furtherly confirmed) the potential roles of green tea catechins on oxidative stress in male and female reproduction and fertility".

Taken altogether, Green tea polyphenols (GrTPs) may be considered an adjunct therapy in the protection of the male reproductive sperm quality and integrity against the onset of infertility.

Herbal Cayenne, The Best Whole Herb Medicine for Prevention and Treatment of Liver Cancer

Capsaicin (8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide), a major ingredient found in cayenne may be used as a supplement for protection against liver cancer.

According to a recent study by the Duksung Women's University, oral administration of Capsaicin inhibited HepG2 human hepatoblastoma cells, through its antioxidants activities in the induction of apoptosis in the oxidase-mediated generation of ROS.

Other studies insisted that cayenne exerted protection against liver cancer, is the result of inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion of tumors, and induced tumors to radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to subtropical and tropical regions, used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

Liver cancer is a condition of out of controlled growth of hepatocellular cells in the liver. Since the organ is a soft tissue with less nerve, most liver cancer patients are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer. According to the statistic, liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

In a 4-wk feeding of B6C3F1 mice at 6 wk of age, oral intake of the cayenne group expressed not the only bodyweight but also reduced hypoglycemia and cells involved in the generation of liver cancer.

Dr. Teel RW, author of the research said, " At concentrations of 25, 50, and 100 microM, capsaicin inhibited the biotransformation of (Aflatoxin B1(AFB1) produced by hepatitis viral) by modifying Phase I hepatic enzyme activity ( induced damage and injure of the liver) "

Furthermore, in the inhibition of toxical metabolism, capsaicin also possessed antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic properties against many types of cancer.

Taking all together, cayenne may process the anti liver cancer effect, but a large quantity intake should only be prescribed by herbalists.

Garlic - The Whole Food Medicine for Reduced Risk and Treatment of Progression of Atherosclerosis

Recent study suggested that patients with atherosclerosis may be benefits from adding aged garlic extract with supplement into their diet.

According to the UCLA-School of Medicine, Los Angeles, the effectiveness of garlic in reduced homocysteine and progression of Atherosclerosis is the result of the changing white (wEAT) and brown (bEAT) epicardial adipose tissue(a form of visceral fat deposited around the heart) in plaque stabilization.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia, used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotic, etc.

Atherosclerosis is a disease in which plaque builds up inside the arteries affecting the levels of oxygen in the blood as well as increased risks of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease.

In a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized trial (conducted 2005-2007), with 65 intermediate-risk patients (age 60+/-9 years, 79% male), patients treated with a capsule containing aged garlic extract (250 mg) plus Vitamin B12 (100 microg), folic acid (300 microg), Vitamin B6 (12.5 mg) and l-arginine (100 mg) daily for a 1 year are found to associate with a favorable improvement in oxidative biomarkers, vascular function, and reduced progression of atherosclerosis.

(AGE) has shown to retard the progression of coronary calcification in patients with coronary artery disease in vitro and vivo,

Dr. Morihara N, the lead author at the joint study said, " Antiatherosclerotic activity of AGE is at least partly due to the suppression of inflammation and lipid deposition in the vessels during the early stage of atherosclerotic development".

In a total of 157 healthy postmenopausal women (age 65 ± 6) randomized study, 500 mg isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation, including garlic powder, showed to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis progression through lowering high blood cholesterol.

Although garlic prevents the development of cholesterol-induced experimental atherosclerosis and possesses direct anti-atherogenic activity, the intake of garlic supplements should be taken with care to patients with an ulcer.

Chamomile, the Antimicrobial Whole Herb Medicine in Accelerated Wound Healing

Chamomile, exerted its biotic property in accelerated the progression of wound healing by inhibiting Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in vivo.

According to the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, treatment of 5% C. Nobile ointment extract from chamomile in rat wounds infected induced by P. aeruginosa, was more effective in the expression of antibacterial and wound healing activities in comparison to tetracycline, the antibiotic medicine.

The chamomile noble, in the Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation isolated from wound infections, also showed a remarkable inhibitory concentration of 6.25-25mg/ml.

Dr. Kazemian H. the lead researcher at the joint study said, " C. Nobile may play an important role in its antibacterial activity, thus offering an additional strategy in the fight against bacterial infections. and "However, the molecular investigation is required to explore the exact mechanisms of the antibacterial action and functions of this phytocompound".

Furthermore, in the testing of the effect of chamomile compounds in several models of toxicity (acute toxicity against Artemia salina and cytotoxicity against two cell lines (fibroblast and melanoma)), researchers suggested that these compounds showed low to moderate activity in all tests of acetylcholinesterase inhibitory and antibacterial activities.

And the intake of these compounds in naturally available amounts, on their own, would probably not represent a risk to human health but the possible adverse interactions with the plant matrix should not be neglected.

Therefore, people who intend to use chamomile for reduced risk and treatment of various diseases should be cautious to prevent overdoses' toxicity.

Ginger, The Anti Gastrointestinal Disorder Functional Pungent Spice

Scientists may have found a kitchen pungent spice for the treatment of the gastrointestinal disorder, some studies suggested.

Gastrointestinal diseases are the conditions of the digestive system associated with the disorders involving the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum.

The digestive system includes gastrointestinal tract (GI), liver, pancreas, and gallbladder with a healthy function of breaking down food into nutrients and fluids for the body's need.

There are many different types of gastrointestinal diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, celiac disease, and lactose intolerance.

There are many causes of gastrointestinal disorders, such as bacterial and viral infection, inflammation, poor circulation to the intestines, muscle dysfunction, gallstones, stress, particularly long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Conventional medicine used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders is depending on the disease that triggers the disorder.such as antibiotics for bacterial infection, painkillers for stomach pain.

Sherry Coleman Collins, MS, RDN, LD in the article, Natural Remedies for Digestive Disorders outlined the percentage of the use of natural remedies for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, and how much money that the American spend a year in purchasing these remedy.

Believe or not, it is equivalent to about one-third of out-of-pocket dollars spent on prescription drugs.

The dietitian wrote, " more clients and patients are looking for ways to treat their digestive disorders with natural medicines sold over the counter. According to a 2007 National Institutes of Health-funded survey on the use of complementary and alternative medicines in the United States, roughly 38% of adults use natural remedies, such as diet-based therapies (eg, gluten-free diets) and herbs, among others" and

"Also in 2007, it was estimated that nearly $34 billion was spent on complementary and alternative medicines, including about $15 billion on “nonvitamin, nonmineral, natural products:.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The pungent spice has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to reconfirm the traditional use of ginger against various gastric ailments, researchers at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences conducted an experiment to review the ginger effect in the prevention of antituberculosis-induced gastrointestinal adverse reactions.
A randomized pilot clinical trial included 60 patients who were placed into ginger and placebo groups (30 patients in each group) received either 500 mg ginger (Zintoma)(®) or placebo one-half hour before each daily dose of antituberculosis drugs for 4 weeks.

After examining the Patients' gastrointestinal complaints (nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, and abdominal pain) and antituberculosis drug-induced hepatotoxicity were recorded during the study period, researchers showed that application ginger to the 48 (80%) patients experienced nausea caused by antituberculosis drug-induced gastrointestinal adverse reactions, reduced gastrointestinal disorders by 56% compared to 43% in the placebo.

Patients in the ginger group experienced less, but not statistically significant, antituberculosis drug-induced hepatotoxicity than the placebo group (16.7% vs 36.7%, respectively, p = 0.07).

Dr. Emrani Z, the lead author in the final report wrote, "ginger may be a potential option for prevention of antituberculosis drug-induced gastrointestinal adverse reactions including hepatotoxicity".
Additionally, in the concern of the use of aspirin is its side effect to cause ulceration and bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, a joint study led by the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University was conducted to examine the ginger effect in reducing the risk of gastrointestinal disorder caused by the injection of low dose aspirin.

Injection of ginger exerted a strong activity in the ameliorated ASA-induced gastric ulceration.
[6]-gingerol aspirinate (GAS), the combination of ginger bioactive compounds [6[-gingerol and aspirin demonstrated anti-cancer properties in vitro and superior gastroprotective effects in mice.

The combination (GAS) was also able to survive stomach acid and decomposed in intestinal linings or after absorption to simultaneously release ASA and [6]-gingerol.
GAS inactivates both COX-1 and COX-2 equally to reduce symptoms of inflammation and pain caused by ASA-induced gastric ulceration.

The findings suggested that ginger processes gastroprotective effects and GAS can be a therapeutic equivalent for ASA in inflammatory and proliferative diseases without the deleterious effects on stomach mucosa.

Taken altogether, ginger with abundant gingerols may be considered a functional food for the prevention and adjunct therapy for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorder with no side effects.

The Effects of Herbal Dang Gui (Angelica root) on Diabetes

Dang Gui (Angelica root) may be used alone and conjunction with other herbs in reduced blood glucose of patients with diabetes a new study suggested.

According to the 2011 statistic from National Diabetes InformationClearinghouse (NDIC), among U.S. residents ages 65 years and older, 10.9 million, or 26.9 percent, had diabetes in 2010, about 215,000 people younger than 20 years had diabetes—type 1 or type 2—in the United States in 2010 and approximately, 1.9 million people ages 20 years or older were newly diagnosed with diabetes in 2010 in the United States.

Besides acting like a queen herb in balancing the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation, Dang Qui also used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.(1)

Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang (DBT), an aqueous extract of Radix Astragali and Radix Angelica sinensis of Chinese herbal formula, showed to significantly alleviate the hyperglycemia but made no influence on plasma lipid profiles nor weight gain in fructose chow-fed rats when applied alone, through increased post-receptor insulin signaling(2). Together with Panax notoginseng (RRP), the extract showed to reverse high glucose-induced inhibition of endothelial cell migration and proliferation, through decreased the expression of inflammatory factors(3).

Decursin, an active compound isolated from Angelica gigas, also showed a significantly reduced the secretion of HFD-induced adipocytokines such as leptin, resistin, IL-6 and MCP-1 associated with diabetes and obesity(4)

Angelica Keiskei, another member of Angelica improved insulin resistance in diabetes of rats induced by streptozotocin with intraperitoneal injection as well as with high-fat diet feeding through upregulation of the mRNA expression levels of PI3K and Akt(5).

Dr, Zhao Y. and the research team at the Medical College of Qingdao University also in the study of the effect of Angelica Keiskei in diabetes told PubMed " Angelica keiskei chalcone (the extract) may increase the expression levels of Glut2 in liver and Glut4 in skeletal muscle cells, decrease fasting blood glucose and insulin of type 2 diabetic rats and improve their insulin resistance condition"(6).

Unfortunately, oral administration of angelica has linked to the proliferation of breast cancer for women with a history of breast cancer and gene mutation Her-2(7)(8).

Taken altogether, Dang Qui may be effective in reduced glucose levels of patients with type II diabetes and can be considered for the prevention of diabetic complications. Due to its conflict results in breast cancer studies, it is advisable that women with mutation gene Her or with a history of breast cancer should consult their Doctor & Related field specialist before applying. Garlic, The Kitchen Spice in the Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension, Scientists Recommend

Scientists may have found a common kitchen spice with potential in reducing high blood pressure quickly without including any side effects, some studies endorsed.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If it stays high over time it can damage the body in many ways.

The causes of hypertension are unknown. However, researchers do know that acute hypertension is induced by daily stress.

Certain risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyle choices, physical inactivity unhealthy diet with high in saturated and trans fat, refined products, processed food, high sugar, and salt intake,...... over time cause your blood pressure to spice-up chronically.

Lifestyle choices can also lead to overweight or obese, the risk factors for the early onset of hypertension.

According to the statistic, in the US, over 75 million adults or 32% have high blood pressure.

In other words, 1 in every 3 American adults has the syndrome. Sadly 44% of the mentioned adults with high blood pressure are not under control.

Uncontrol high blood pressure has long been known as a major risk factor for the development of heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States.

Blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects such as gastrointestinal discomforts, tiredness, weakness, headache.

Some patients who are taking hypertensive medicine over prolonged periods of time may experience symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

In severe cases, the intake of antihypertensive drugs for the long term can cause dermatitis, arthritis and anemia and lupus erythematosus-like syndrome, according to the article "Adverse Effects of Antihypertensive Drugs" written by Dr. DWARD D. FREIS, M.D.

If you are currently taking any anti-high blood pressure medications, please make you that you know all the side effects.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia.

The kitchen spice has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

In adult men and women, participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2006-2008 to 2012-2014), the intake of garlic is associated to reduce the risk of hypertension by up 26%.

In hypertension of 80-90% of patients with excess glucocorticoid level, allicin found in garlic attenuated dexamethasone-induced anorexia and loss of total body weight.

A randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial conducted on 56 CVD patients, aged 25 - 75 years old also suggested treatment with garlic-based drugs can be effective for controlling BP in CVD patients and has no interaction with other drugs that CAD patients take, after 3 months of the administration.

Dr. Takashima M the lead author at the Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd said, " aged garlic extract (AGE) is effective in reducing the blood pressure of hypertensive patients,......AGE-induced the concentration-dependent vasorelaxation of isolated rat aortic rings that had been precontracted with norepinephrine"

In fact, traditional Chinese medicine, food therapy, and hypertension control, all recommended that garlic is of the food to be used for hypertension control, according to a statistical analysis of antihypertensive foods recommended in 20 books on the application of food therapy for hypertension control.

If you can control your diet, make changes to lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, you could do just fine without the drugs,

Taking all together, garlic may be used as preventive and controlling effects for patients with or without high blood pressure. Some researchers insisted that garlic anti-hypertension effect may result from its anticoagulant property.

Cleaver(Galium aparine) Kills Resistant Laryngeal Cancer Cells in Vitro

The larynx is also known as the voice box, located between the pharynx and the trachea. Its function is to ensure the airways to open when we breathe and talk and closed when we swallow to ensure no food gets into the trachea.

Laryngeal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the larynx. The cancer cells may spread to other tissues and organs in the late stage via lymph and blood circulation.

The exact cause of laryngeal cancer is unknown. Researchers do not know why people in the same family with the same health conditions and gender, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.

However, they do know that certain risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol drinking, unhealthy diet, family history, HPV infection and long-term exposure to some chemicals including wood dust, soot coal dust, and paint fumes can increase the risk of cancer.

Genetic mutation inherited from the parents, such as TP53, GSTM3 and NAT2 and long-term use of some medication, such as immune-suppressive drugs to fight off infections such as HIV or AIDs is considered the prevalent risk factors for the disease development.

The most common symptoms of larynx (Voice Box) cancer include
* Hoarseness or other voice changes
Due to malignant cells have invaded the vocal cords.

* A cough that doesn't go away or stridor
Due to blocking of the airway.

* Breathing difficulties
The tumor has grown large enough to block off the airway.

* Ear pain
The tumor has pressed onto the nerve.

*A lump or mass in the neck or throat
Cancer gas invaded the nearby lymph nodes in the neck and throat.

* Coughing up of blood
Breaking off of some malignant cells.

Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belongings to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser and to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stone, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers investigated a Galium verum decoction in chemosensitive (Hep-2 and HLaC79) and chemoresistant, P-glycoprotein-overexpressing (Hep2-Tax, HLaC79-Tax) laryngeal carcinoma cell lines.

According to the results from the detailed spheroid-based 3D invasion analysis of Hep2 and Hep2-Tax in semisolid collagen gels and on different extracellular matrix coatings, Galium decoction proved to be even more pronounced in the more aggressively invading chemoresistant Hep2-Tax cell line compared to the administration of Galium aqueous extract.

Furthermore, the application of decoction also inhibited the expression of the enzyme gelatinolytic activity produced by the MMP-2 in three of the four cell lines without affecting the angiogenesis in the tested cell lines.

Interestingly, Galium decoction demonstrated an anti HLaC79 and Hep2, Hep2-Tax and HLaC79-Taxactivity with no influencing unique pathway activation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the intake of HCA has preventive effects on bone loss in STZ-diabetic rats, and that the intake has partially restorative effects on serum biochemical findings in the diabetic state".

Taken altogether, herbal cleaver may be considered as an anti resistant laryngeal cancer remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Protects in Post-Ischemic Reperfusion Injury in Vivo

Acute brain infarction is the medical condition characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing the local death of the brain tissue.

The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are associated with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.

In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.

Myocardial infarction (MI), or heart attack is a condition caused by the decrease or blockage of blood flow to a part of the heart that damage the heart muscle.

Reperfusion injury or ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) or reoxygenation injury, when blood supply returns to damaged tissues after a period of ischemia or lack of oxygen (anoxia or hypoxia). caused by the decrease or blockage of blood flow to a part of the heart.

Atherosclerosis, one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of plaque on the arterial wall. Over time, the condition can lead to narrowing the arteries or blocked arteries, leading to reduce oxygenated blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.

Arteries are blood vessels carried the oxygen-rich blood to the heart before passing them to the tissues and organs.

Plague is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. In other words, cholesterol that cannot be returned to the liver for reuse may have a strong impact to induce plaque accumulation.

There are many factors associated with the risk of acute infarction. However, aging may have a strong and negative implication on acute infarction.

Dr. Mehta RH, the lead scientist wrote, "Older age was associated with a greater proportion of patients with functional limitations, heart failure, prior coronary disease, and renal insufficiency and a lower proportion of male and diabetic patients".

And, "...age-associated differences in clinical characteristics in elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), which account for some of the age-associated differences in mortality".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the promotion of heart health, researchers evaluated the cardioprotective mechanisms of Withania somnifera (Ws), in the setting of ischemia and reperfusion (IR) injury.

In vivo, selected Wistar rats were divided into three groups received orally saline (sham, control IR) and Ws-50 mg/kg (Ws-IR), respectively, for 1 month. Then, on day 31, rats of control IR and Ws-IR group, LAD coronary artery occlusion was undertaken for 45 min followed by 1 h reperfusion.

Based on the tested analysis, post-ischemic reperfusion injury was found to induce significant cardiac necrosis, apoptosis, and a decline in antioxidant status.

Furthermore, elevation in lipid peroxidation was also found in the IR control group, compared to the sham group.

Ws treatment group not only restored the myocardial oxidant-antioxidant balance but also inhibited the makers of apoptotic effects induced by ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Moreover, Ws protects additional post-ischemic reperfusion injury-induced further myocardial damage in the tested rats by increasing the levels of proteins associated with anti-apoptotic activity and decreasing the protein involved in pro-apoptotic activity, evidenced by histopathologic evaluation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties of Ws may contribute to the cardioprotective effects.".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of myocardial damage in post-ischemic reperfusion injury, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Comfrey(Symphytum officinale L.), the Potential and Natural Treatment of Myalgia

Myalgia is a group of diseases associated with muscle pain.

Most common types of myalgia are
* Systemic lupus erythematosus

The systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the body's immune system abnormal function that attacks healthy tissue in many parts of the body, inducing symptoms of severe fatigue, joint pain, swelling, and headaches.

*Systemic sclerosis
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease of the connective tissue that may be misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis. According to Dr. Horimoto AM and Dr. Costa IP, arthritis, clinically observed, maybe a feature often found in a patient with Systemic sclerosis, often leading to early misdiagnosis with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

The most common symptoms of systemic sclerosis are hair loss, calcium deposits, or white lumps under the skin, small, dilated blood vessels under the skin's surface and joint pain.
* Polymyositis

Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles associated with dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis.

The most common system of polymyositis is muscle pain and stiffness, muscle weakness, particularly in the belly (abdomen), shoulders, upper arms, and hips and joint pain and stiffness.

The most common causes of myalgia are overuse, injury, or strain of muscles. However, myalgia can also be caused by diseases, medications, and in some, it is a response to vaccination.

Conventionally, most cases of myalgia are treated by over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen

Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relieve pain and swollen, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic pain, researchers investigated the effectiveness and tolerability of the topical Symphytum product Traumaplant (Harras Pharma Curarina, München, Germany) (10% active ingredient of a 2.5:1 aqueous-ethanolic pressed concentrate of freshly harvested, cultivated comfrey herb [Symphytum uplandicum Nyman], corresponding to 25 g of fresh herb per 100 g of cream) in the treatment of patients with myalgia (n=104) were tested against a 1% reference product (corresponding to 2.5 g of fresh comfrey herb in 100 g of cream; n=111).

According to the results from the primary efficacy parameter in this double-blind, reference- controlled, randomized, multicenter study of 215 patients with pain in the lower and upper back and motion and the. secondary efficacy parameters included pain at rest, pain on palpation, and functional impairment, high concentrations of the treatment product showed a significant amelioration of pain on active motion (P<5 x 10 -9 ), pain at rest (P<.001), and pain on palpation compared to the reference product which was clinically highly relevant.

The high-concentration product exerted a significantly better global efficacy and faster onset of effects.

Tolerability of the highly concentrated study product was good to excellent in all patients.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Study results confirm the known anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of topical (Symphytum cream. As a new finding, applicability in certain forms of back pain can be concluded".

Taken altogether, Comfrey combined with other herbal medicine for the treatment of myalgia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
