Stroke is a condition in which the brain function is interrupted rapidly due to the loss of blood supply as a result of the blockage of blood such as thrombosis and arterial embolism, or leakage of blood causes of the death of brain cells, according to the article of Mitochondria, oxidative metabolism and cell death in stroke by Sims NR, Muyderman H (September 2009).
In other words, stroke can be caused by either ischemia, due to lack of blood flow or hemorrhagic, due to bleeding.
A stroke is a medical emergency. Early intervention is most cases can minimize brain damage and potential complications.
There is a general belief that stroke is an accumulation over a long period of the unhealthy diet with red meat and processed meats in the induction of artery-clogging.
Some researchers suggested that increased intake of fruits and vegetables such as carrot accompanied with good fats such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel may have a substantial effect in reduced inflammation in the arteries, improved blood flow, and decreased the chance of blood clots.
Sadly, stroke is one of the most common causes of death worldwide.
In the US, according to statistics, approximately 800,000 people suffer a stroke in which 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65.
Stroke is also the third leading cause of death. Approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of disease associated with plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (WS), supplementation on middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) induced mitochondrial dysfunctions in an experimental model of ischemic stroke.
According to the tested analysis, before treatment with WS, tested mice showed an ischemia-reperfusion injury, leading to the increase of the oxidative stress indicated by increased reactive oxygen species and protein carbonyl levels and low levels of antioxidant enzymes.
The untreated mice also exerted decreased antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase activity, along with a reduction in GSH levels and the redox ratio, impaired mitochondrial functions, and enhanced expression of apoptosis markers.
Ischemia-reperfusion injury in the tested mice also induced mitochondrial dysfunctions.
Moreover, the levels of pro-inflammatory and apoptotic proteins were also increased in the untreated mice. The Y maze test also indicated a significant impairment in cognitive functions in the tested animal.
However, WS pre-supplementation ameliorated all parameters associated with the induction of MCAO such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunctions, apoptosis, and cognitive impairments.
Based on the evidence, researchers said, "WS pre-supplementation in ischemic stroke and are suggestive of its potential application in stroke management".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a supplement for stroke management, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Stomach Against Gastritis Developing
Gastritis is a group of conditions associated with the inflammation of the lining of the stomach caused by infection of the bacterium, leading stomach ulcers developing.
A stomach ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the stomach. In most cases, it is a result of bacterial infection that leads to the erosion of the gastric lining by stomach acid.
Other causes of gastritis are long term excessive alcohol consumption and use of certain medication such as aspirin.
There are 2 types of gastritis
* Acute gastritis occurs suddenly as a result of inflammation or swelling in the lining of the stomach. and only affects the stomach and induce nausea or vomiting,
* Chronic gastritis is a condition that develops slowly due to chronic inflammation or damage of stomach lining that has not healed.
Patients with chronic gastritis if untreated were found to have a substantial risk of stomach cancer.
The most common symptoms of gastritis are burning sensation or pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting, and abnormal feeling of fullness in the upper abdomen after eating.
Out of many risk factors involved in the onset of the condition, some researchers in the observation of the correlation of high-fat diet-induced obesity over the past few decades, in the risk of gastritis wrote, "Obesity has become a major concern among gastroenterologists due to its large influence on gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases: reflux esophagitis, pancreatitis, gallstone disease, liver fibrosis, and neoplastic tumors of the esophagus, pancreas, and colon".
And, "the effects of obesity on endoscopic gastritis in subjects undergoing health check-up examination, and demonstrated that adiponectin, a bioactive molecule released from visceral fat, could be a protective factor of endoscopic gastritis".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of gastric inflammation, researchers examined the effect of diterpenoid C extracted from radix curcumae on Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-infected inflammation, intestinal metaplasia.
The study included human gastric epithelial gastric epithelium cell line (GES-1) infected by I-type H. pylori treated with radix curcumae (RC)-derived diterpenoid C of different concentrations (5, 10, 20 μg/mL) and amoxicillin.
According to the MTT assay, IC5 of RC-derived diterpenoid C and amoxicillin of 5 μg/mL inhibited the progression rate of GES-1.
The combination also inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and exhibited the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines associated with injection of I-type H. pylori in the GES-1,
particularly, at 12, 24, 48, 72 h points.
In other words, the combination protecting the stomach against gastric inflammation by blocking the activation of a protein involved in the stimulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "RC-derived diterpenoid C can block NF-κB signal pathway, effectively reducing the secretion of H. pylori-induced proinflammatory cytokine and increasing the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokine".
In Helicobacter pylori infection of the lining of the stomach induces an array of inflammatory cytokine production that leads to gastritis and peptic ulcer disease, researchers at the Uttaradit Hospital conducted an experiment to investigate the effect of curcumin on the production of interleukin (IL)-8, IL-1beta, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 in gastric mucosa from H. pylori-infected gastritis patients.
Selected patients were randomly assigned to receive either OAM (Omeprazole, Amoxicillin, and Metronidazole) treatment and/or a course of curcumin.
According to the tested assays, curcumin alone may have a limited anti-bactericidal effect on H. pylori, and on the production of inflammatory cytokines compared to those of the OAM group.
However, the curcumin group showed significant relieving symptoms with a lower rate in the eradication rate of H. pylori and no decreased cytokine production.
Precisely, curcumin used alone has limited efficacy compared to that of the combination in reducing the gastric inflammation.
Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundant bioactive ingredient curcumin may be combined with other conventional medicines for the prevention and treatment of gastric inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry, Protect the Brain Cell Against Memory Impairment
Memory impairment is a condition associated with a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. Over time, the condition can worsen enough to affect the quality of life and daily activity.
Memory loss can be temporarily forgotten, such as forgetting to pay a monthly bill and permanent such as no longer know your name. Many factors can cause memory change. However, memory impairment in the elderly in most cases is associated with a gradual loss and death of neurons such as Alzheimer's disease.
Some memory changes can be resolved on their own or cured by medical treatment. Others due to the loss of neuron and quantity capacity cannot be revered such as dementia.
According to statistics, dementia affects 47.5 million people worldwide. Every year over 7.7 million new cases are diagnosed. The disease is a leading cause of dependency and mental impairment among the elderly population.
The aim of the treatment of irreversible memory impairment is to improve the quality of life by delaying the progression of underlying diseases such as AD and PD.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of memory deficits, with no side effects compared to those of conventional medicine, researchers examined the effects of anthocyanin pigments, a group of flavonoids, and a widespread class of phenolic compounds found abundantly in bilberry.
The study included the examination of elevated plus-maze and radial maze tasks cognitive performance fed approximately 3.2 mg kg(-1)day (oral) the anthocyanins. The lyophilized berries were administered for 30 days before the first training.
According to the step-down inhibitory avoidance, open field analysis, lyophilized berries significantly enhanced short-term memory, but not long-term memory and induced an increase in the number of crossings in the first exposure to the open field.
Interestingly, prolonged treatment with lyophilized berries did not have any significant effects in the elevated plus-maze task but improved working memory in the radial maze, with significant differences observed during sessions 1-2 and 4, but did not alter reference memory in this task.
Researchers after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "These results suggest that lyophilized berries may be beneficial in the prevention of memory deficits, one of the symptoms related to AD, and corroborate previous findings showing that flavonoids present effects in several learning paradigms".
In other words, the efficacy of bilberry protects the memory function against the onset of deficits was attributed to the bioactive compound anthocyanin.
Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound Anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment symptom of memory deficits in patients with AD, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Protects the Joints Against Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA), a form of arthritis, is a chronic condition found mostly in elderly caused by of wear and tear on a joint.
The University of Porto Medical School in the definition of OA advised that one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), according to case definition, in the knee, hip, and hand joints(3).
The condition affects over 25 million people in the United States.
The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty of moving the joint or joints. The pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night, and in the advanced diseases, the pain can occur even at rest.
Today management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function and quality of life through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments.
Most common causes of OA are
* Process of wear and repair
Osteoarthritis (OA), is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints often associated with senescence invertebrates. arising from long term wear and tear, heavy long-term use or specific injuries. The improper repair process of injuring joints can also result in symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) in old age, according to TCM.
* Nutrient deficiency and overload
Poor nutritional conditions experienced early in life are linked to the greater prevalence of osteoarthritis (OA), such as vitamin D. On the other hand, nutrient overload and metabolic surplus, such as obesity may contribute to early onset of osteoarthritis (OA).
* Cartilage
Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue cushioned the ends of bones in the joints that allow the joints to move smoothly. Rough or wears down cartilage due to aging or damage can cause pain due to the bone in the joint rubbing against another bone.
The above causes of Osteoarthritis (OA) may also be the result of injury, overuse, and Rheumatoid Arthritis,
In other words, lifelong protection of cartilage and joint damage and injury has an inverse association with the risk of OA.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural resource for the treatment of osteoarthritis, researchers compared the effect of a combination of bromelain, trypsin, and rutin (ERC) to diclofenac.
The study included103 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee randomly received either the combination of bromelain, trypsin, and rutin or diclofenac including 52 patients treated with ERC and 51 patients treated with the diclofenac.
According to the tested assay,
* The mean value of the Lequesne's Algofunctional Index (LFI) decreased from 13.0 to 9.4 in the ERC group and from 12.5 to 9.4 in the diclofenac group.
* Non-inferiority of ERC was demonstrated by both primary criteria, LFI (MW = 0.5305; CI-LB = 0.4171) and complaint index (MW = 0.5434; CI-LB = 0.4296).
Where LFI is a measurement of the severity of osteoarthritis.
* ERC also showed the superior improvement of secondary efficacy criteria, compared to diclofenac
* The global judgment of efficacy by physician resulted in at least good ratings for 51.4% of the ERC patients, and for 37.2% of the diclofenac patients.
Furthermore, the majority of patients rate the tolerability in both drug groups as very good or good.
Based on the finding, researchers wrote, " ERC can be considered as an effective and safe alternative to NSAIDs such as diclofenac in the treatment of painful episodes of OA of the knee".
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry, the Atheroprotective Functional Food
Atherosclerosis is a condition associated with the accumulated plaque on the arterial wall. Over time the condition can cause stiffening and hardening of the arterial, leading to cardiovascular disease.
Atheroprotection is an action that reduces the plaque build up on the arterial wall. In other words, anything, including the use of substances such as herbal remedy that prevents the blockage or narrowing of the arteries is considered to precess atheroprotective effects.
Although plaque is formed by substances found in the bloodstream, most cases of atherosclerosis are also associated with the amount of cholesterol which normally returned to the liver in healthy individuals remaining in the blood due to low levels of good cholesterol (HDL) or overexpression of bad cholesterol (LDL).
In other words, an unhealthy ratio of low and high-density lipoprotein is also one of the major risk factors of atherosclerosis. the healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is any number that is less than 4 (LDL)/ 1 )HDL)
Dr. Ilaria Zanotti, the lead scientist in the investigation of atheroprotective effects of (poly) phenols wrote, "epidemiological studies have demonstrated that dietary intake of (poly)phenols from nuts, coffee, cocoa, grapes, and berries may protect against the development of atherosclerosis".
And, "... recently emerging data suggest mechanisms by which (poly)phenolic substances can modulate cellular lipid metabolism, thereby mitigating atherosclerotic plaque formation".
The results strongly suggested a healthy diet including nuts, coffee, cocoa, grapes, and berries may have a profound effect on the prevention of atherosclerosis.
With an aim to find a potent ingredient that processes atheroprotective effects, researchers assessed the results of the intake of bilberry foods associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases from the previous study.
2 bilberry extracts included one rich in anthocyanins extracted from untreated bilberries (BE) and a second one extracted from yeast-fermented bilberries (FBE).
On atherosclerosis induced apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apo E(-/-)) received for 16 weeks a diet supplemented with 0.02% of either BE or FBE.
According to the measurement of atherosclerotic plaque area, administration of both supplementations bilberry extracts led to significant inhibition of plaque development, without affecting on oxidative stress parameters or lipid profiles.
The results surprisingly suggested bilberry supplement inhibited the atherosclerotic development through other mechanisms unrelated to inflammation and lipoproteins.
Compared to BE, FBE showed better protection against plaque accumulation on the arterial walls.
The finding firmly showed that the fermentation must have generated new bioactive compounds that are found in the BE extracts.
In other words, other compounds found in bilberry fermentation are more effective in attenuating the progression of atherosclerotic lesions.
Taken altogether, bilberry, particularly bilberry fermentation processed abundantly bioactive compounds anthocyanins may be considered function remedies for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Modulated the Immune System Against the Development of Diseases
The immune system is a network of cells, tissues, and organs that provide the body's defense against infectious organisms and pathogens.
The immune system can be classified into innate immunity and adaptive immunity
* Innate immunity comprised the cells and mechanisms is the process of the immune response against infection in a non-specific manner.
* Adaptive immunity or acquired immunity is the process to destroy pathogens or prevent their growth by a composed of highly specialized, systemic cells that have been causing a threat to the body in the past.
Diseases associated with the immune system can also be classified into underactive immunity and overactive immunity
* Underactive immunity also known as weakened immune function is a condition found mostly in people with chronic illness, the elderly, and children with immature immunity.
People with a weakened immune system are prone to infectious diseases.
* Overactive immunity associated with autoimmune diseases, including celiac disease, diabetes mellitus type 1, Graves'disease, inflammatory bowel disease, caused by allergens induced the immune system mistakenly attacking the body tissues.
In an inflammatory perspective, the chronic inflammatory diseases are also caused by the immune system failure in destroying all foreign invaders in the acute infection in a set period of time, leading to immune adaptation with the long-term production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Diseases associated with chronic inflammation include type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the modulation of the immune system, researchers examined the effects on inflammation-related cytokines of two doses of bromelain in a single dose placebo-controlled 3 × crossovers randomized clinical trial.
Injection of bromelain demonstrated significant immune-modulatory effects on Th1 cell mediator interferon-gamma in response to antigenic stimulation, Th2-type cytokine IL-5 in the regulation of humoral immune responses to extracellular parasites and bacterial infection as well as the immunosuppressive cytokine interleukin (IL)-10.
In other words, bromelain has a general effect on the antigen-specific (T cell) compartment of the human immune system in the modulation of cellular responses of lymphocyte.
In order to obtain more information of bromelain immunomodulatory effects, researchers investigated the influence of bromelain and trypsin on the cytokine production and proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients with a classical cellular mediated autoimmune disorder, namely, encephalomyelitis disseminate (ED) as well as from healthy controls.
The experiment carried out with PBMC from patients with ED (n=12) and healthy controls (n=12) cultured for seven days at 37 degrees C under three different conditions: without antigen, with bromelain and with trypsin (final concentrations 10-1000 microg/ml).
Compared to trypsin, PBMC from patients with ED and healthy controls showed a significantly increased proliferative response to bromelain (ED: 14053+/- 7585 CPM with bromelain vs. spontaneous proliferation of 430+/- 255 CPM; healthy controls.
Furthermore, bromelain modulated the immune expression by activating macrophages/monocytes and type 1 cells associated with the adaptive immunity process independently from the underlying disease.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the modulation of immune function, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Improves Cardiorespiratory Endurance in Healthy Athletic Adults
The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body tissues and organs.
Cardiorespiratory endurance is a measurement of how well your heart, lungs, and muscles work over an extended period of time of physical activity.
Participating in a program of regular aerobic exercise has been found to improve cardiorespiratory endurance in athletes.
In other words, healthy individuals with optimal cardiorespiratory endurance have been found to benefits from reducing the risk of heart disease, lung cancer, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and other diseases.
Furthermore, cardiorespiratory fitness also improves the lung and heart condition and increases feelings of wellbeing.
An article posted in the Medical News Today regarded to the health benefits of cardiorespiratory fitness wrote, "Scientific research also suggests some other potential health benefits from having an improved cardiorespiratory endurance" and "For example:
A 2017 study suggests that people with higher cardiorespiratory endurance are less likely to develop high blood pressure than those with a lower cardiorespiratory endurance.
In a 2015 study, researchers found a positive correlation between cardiorespiratory endurance levels and multitask performance among adults aged between 59 and 80 years.
Improving cardiorespiratory endurance may decrease the risk of coronary heart disease and all-cause mortality, according to a 2015 study".
On finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of health-fitness, researchers examined the clinical efficacy of herbal Ashwagandha on cardiovascular endurance and physical performance.

Herbal Turmeric Protects Diabetics Against Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the diabetes complications caused by long-term uncontrol levels of blood glucose in patients with diabetes, leading to vision loss.
Diabetic macular edema (DME) is swelling in an area of the retinal macula, a consequence of diabetic retinopathy.
The cause of diabetic retinopathy is a result of unmanageable high blood sugar from diabetes associated with damage to the tiny blood vessels in the retina.
Other eye diseases often found in patients with uncontrol blood glucose are
* Cataract, a condition of clouding of the eye’s lens.
Believe or not, patients with diabetes are 2-5 times more likely to develop cataract compared to a healthy individual.
* Glaucoma, a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain. Diabetic has nearly doubled the risk of glaucoma, compared to non-diabetics.
At the early stage of hyperglycemia, most patients are asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, the condition affects vision caused bt eh bleeding from abnormal retinal blood vessels.
Conventionally, diabetic retinopathy diagnosed and treated early were found to reduce diabetic retinopathy risk by 95%. However, late-stage diabetic retinopathy may cause irreversible vision loss.
Please make sure you have eye exams more frequently for preventive measures.
By managing your blood glucose by changing lifestyle with moderate exercise and taking your medication as direct diabetic retinopathy may be preventable.
In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the prevention of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effect of curcumin, an active ingredient of turmeric on diabetic retinopathy.
In vivo, curcumin inhibited the proliferation of retinal endothelial cells in tested animals.
Curcumolide, a bioactive compound found in turmeric, demonstrates a significant effect in alleviating retinal inflammatory activities both in vitro.
In vivo of STZ-induced diabetic rat model and in TNF-α-stimulated HUVECs, injection of curcumolide exerted anti-inflammatory effects against the inflammatory induction of retinal damage.
Furthermore, curcumolide also alleviated retinal vascular permeability and leukostasis and attenuated the overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in diabetic retinas.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "These data suggest potential treatment strategies against diabetic retinopathy, particularly in the early stages of the disease".
Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of curcumolide may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain Kills Leukemia Cancer Cells
Leukemia is a medical and chronic condition that affects the blood and bone marrow associated with the production of immature white blood cells that can not function properly.
Leukemia can be classified into 2 types
A. Acute leukemia
Acute leukemia is a condition of the rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream and other parts of the body, including tissue and organs.
* Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer caused by the abnormal growth of extreme immature lymphocytes by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia, accounting 80% of all cases.
* Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a cancer of myelogenous lining caused by the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal the blood cells.
B. Chronic leukemia
Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells.
* Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a condition caused by slow growth and spreading of a group of abnormal white blood cells called B-cell lymphocytes, which fight against infection in our body by produced antibodies.
* Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a condition caused by slow growth and spreading of abnormal granulocytes.
The exact causes of leukemia are unidentified. Researchers do not know the exact factors that cause the alternation of cell DNA that promotes the abnormal growth of white blood cells.
However, they do know aging, family factors, male, smoking, long-term exposure to certain chemicals, chemo and radiation therapies, genetic proposition, and certain types of blood disorder are associated with the increased risk of the disease.
Leukemia shared all general symptoms with other types of cancer such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal discomforts, and persistent fatigue accompanied by specific symptoms of bleeding or bruising, recurrent nosebleeds, tiny red spots in your skin, excessive sweating, and hight time bone pain or tenderness.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to discover a potential compound or whole food for the treatment of leukemia, researchers investigated a panel of cancer cell lines with bromelain in the presence or absence of peroxidase.
Bromelain combined with peroxidase (BM-PR) showed significant inhibition of acute myeloid (K562) cell proliferation and altered the morphological features.
The combination not only exhibited pro-apoptosis against the cancer cell line but also interfered with the cell cycle division through cell cycle arrest.
BM-PR also increased the expression of intracellular ROS level in the induction of cytotoxicity and altered the mitochondrial membrane potential, against the tested cancer cells.
According to the Western blot analysis, BM-PR increased the levels of proteins associated with the activity of proapoptosis and tumor suppression.
Compared to the treatment of bromelain, researchers said, "These results suggest that BM-PR from pineapple induces apoptosis better than the only bromelain in acute myeloid leukemia cells possibly via mitochondria-dependent pathway".
In CD44 cell surface proteins involved in leukocyte binding to endothelium and the metastatic spread of tumor cells, injection of bromelain inhibited the human leukemia Molt 4/8 cells growth by reducing CD44 receptor density.
The most active in reducing CD44 receptor density of bromelain was a half-maximal value of 1.9 mu g/ml and 2.3 mu g/ml.
Based on the findings, bromelain inhibited the progression of leukemia via the reduced CD44 receptor density.
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric's Curcumin, Protects the Blood Vessels Against the Onset of Stroke, in Vivo
A stroke is a medical condition caused by poor blood flow to the brain, leading to the death of the neurons.
Besides cancer and heart diseases, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the US. According to the statistics, approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.
The causes of stroke are either associated with plaque build-up on the arteries, leading to reduce blood flow to the brain, depending on the location of an obstruction or the breaking of small blood vessels in the brain.
In other words, strokes can be classified into 2 types
* Ischemic stroke caused by a clot or other blockage within an artery which leads to the brain.
* Hemorrhagic stroke caused by the vessel in the brain rupturing that results in blood leaking into the brain.
Stroke is caused by a number of factors. Epidemiological studies suggested high blood pressure, medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, smoking, age, gender ethnicity and personal or family history of stroke are some of the prevalent risk factors.
Some researchers in the examination of the rise of stroke in North American suggested that stroke may be associated with the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
The American Heart Association wrote, "Western" diets consisting of red and processed meats, refined grains, sweets, and desserts may be associated with a greater risk of stroke, according to a study published in this week's rapid access issue of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of stroke prevention scientists evaluated the protective effects of curcumin, the best-known member, and is mainly extracted from turmeric preventive effect on stroke.
The study included stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRsp) randomly divided into either a control group (n = 10, saline or curcumin (100 mg/kg/day)) or curcumin group (n = 10) administrated daily.
According to the tested assays, the administration of curcumin significantly delayed the onset of stroke and increased the survival of SHRsp by decreasing the expression of ROS and improving endothelial-dependent relaxation of carotid arteries.
However, according to the RT-PCR and immunoblotting, curcumin showed no statistical significance in the presence of UCP2 inhibitor genipin by blocking the decrease of ROS and the increase of NO production.
Where genipin is a chemical compound found in gardenia fruit extract.
In other words, in order for curcumin to exert its stroke preventive activity, curcumin cannot be consumed together with gardenia fruit.
Additionally, in the study to examine the curcumin effect during the stroke, researchers found that curcumin encapsulated in exosomes, nano-vesicles (<200 nm), shows therapeutic effects in brain diseases, such as stroke.
Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention of stroke, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bilberry Protects the Arteries Against the Risk of Atherosclerosis in Vivo
Atherosclerosis, one of the major cause of the cardiovascular disease is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of plaque on the arterial wall. Over time, the condition can lead to narrowing the arteries or blocked arteries, leading to reduce oxygenated blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.
Arteries are blood vessels carried the oxygen-rich blood to the heart before passing them to the tissues and organs.
Plague is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. In other words, cholesterol that cannot be returned to the liver for reuse may have a strong impact to induce plaque accumulation.
People at the early stage of atherosclerosis are asymptomatic. However, over time, the continued buildup of plaque on the arterial wall can cause symptoms of chest pain or angina shortness of breath. fatigue. confusion, due to a blockage or reduce blood flow.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of atherosclerosis, an unhealthy lifestyle, particularly in people who follow the pattern of the Western diet has been found in many patients with the disease.
Dr. Matthias Nahrendorf, the lead scientist wrote, "Diet, exercise, stress, and sleep are receiving attention as environmental modifiers of chronic inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis, the culprit condition of myocardial infarction and stroke".
And, "Accumulating data indicate that psychosocial stress and a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet aggravate the cardiovascular disease, whereas regular physical activity and healthy sleeping habits help prevent it".
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis researchers evaluated a nutritional supplementation with a bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract (BE) in the atherosclerotic lesion development in apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE⁻/⁻) mice.
On the early stage of atherosclerosis development in tested mice, BE significantly improved hypercholesterolemia associated with plaques built-up without affecting the plasmatic antioxidant status.
According to the nutrigenomic analysis, BE modulated the expression of the gene involved in different cellular processes such as oxidative stress, inflammation, transendothelial migration, and angiogenesis, which lead to atherosclerosis development/protection.
In other words, BE enhanced the mechanisms involved in the preventive action of bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract against atherosclerosis.
On the development of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apo E(-/-)). Apo E(-/-) mice, researchers compared the efficacy of two bilberry extracts, one rich in anthocyanins extracted from untreated bilberries (BE) and a second one extracted from yeast-fermented bilberries (FBE).
According to the 16 weeks a diet supplemented with 0.02% of either BE or FBE, both bilberry extracts led to significant inhibition of plaque development, without affecting the levels of oxidative stress parameters or lipid profiles.
These results strongly suggested that bilberry extract inhibited plaque development through other unknown mechanisms.
By comparative tests, fermentation generates new bioactive compounds FBE are more effective in attenuating progression of the atherosclerotic lesions compared to those of BE.
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Kills Breast Cancer Cells in Vitro
Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissue due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of breast cancer at the early stage start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of either from the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.
At this stage, the patient may first notice as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and most often discovered by herself or her partner.
However, some patients may also experience symptoms of nipple discharge (clear or bloody)
inverted or retracted nipple, scaly or pitted skin on nipple persistent tenderness of the breast and
unusual breast pain or discomfort.
At the advanced stage, besides experiencing symptoms shared commonly with other types of cancer, patients may also notice localized bleeding and severe pain due to the oversize that press on nearby blood vessels and nerves.
According to the U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics, approximately, 1 in 8 U.S. women or 12% will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.
In 2019, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer at the early stage is close to 100%.
The causes of breast cancer are not identified. Gender, aging, genetic preposition, family history, never pregnant women, and smoking are some breast cancer prevalent risks.
Dr. Bhaskarapillai Binukuma, the lead scientist in the evaluation of the diet risk of breast cancer wrote, "Increased consumption of total fat and saturated fat were found to be positively associated with the development of breast cancer".
And, "A moderate inverse association between consumption of n-3 fatty acids and breast cancer risk and a moderate positive association between n-6 fatty acids and breast cancer risk were observed".
In other words, if you are a high-fat diet follower, your risk of breast cancer is increased substantially.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers examined the bromelain-functionalized multiple-wall lipid-core nanocapsules (Bro-MLNC-Zn) on breast cancer cell line.
The complex used for the study was formed by a Zn-N chemical bond and a chelate with hydroxyl and carboxyl group.
In human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), the complex at the nanocapsule surface showed an antiproliferative effect by maintaining its proteolytic activity.
Interestingly, Bro-MLNC-Zn showed a reduced dose at 160-folds to exerted a similar effect compared to that of and bromelain solution.
Based on the results, researchers said, "The surface functionalization approach produced an innovative formulation having a much higher antiproliferative effect than the bromelain solution".
In order to reveal more information about bromelain anti-breast cancer activity, researchers investigated the possible synergistic cytotoxic effects of bromelain in combination with cisplatin on MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells.
Human MDA-MB-231 cells used in the study were treated with different concentrations (0.24-9.5 µM) of bromelain or cisplatin alone, as well as four different combinations.
According to the results of tested assays, single-agent treatment with cisplatin or bromelain decreases the viability of the MDA-MB-231 cells at 24 and 48 h in a dose- and time-dependent manner.
All combinations displayed synergistic effects against MDA-MB-231 cells at 48 h, particularly with combination 1 (bromelain 2 µM + cisplatin 1.5 µM).
Interestingly, combination 1 also was found to induce breast cancer cells death with a significant decrease in the levels of several apoptotic proteins but an increase of levels of the pro-apoptotic proteins compared with bromelain.
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric, the Potential and Natural Neuroprotective Remedy
Scientists may have found a herbal spice which processed bioactive ingredients for the treatment of neuro-disorder with no side effects, according to studies.
Neuroprotection an action involved the use of a natural substance to protect the integrity and viability of neurons against damage or death.
Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neuron in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.
Most common disease associated with neuro-degenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions included Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease.
The disease has been found to negatively influence the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.
There are many risk factors that cause the onset of the progressive death of brain neurons. Genetic preposition, medical condition, such as alcoholism, brain cancer, or a stroke in the brain.
A prolonged period of toxins, toxic chemicals accumulated that affects the brain function also have a strong impact to induce the onset of the disease.
Out of many factors, some researchers suggested that the prevalence of obesity may process some negative implications in stimulating the rise of neurodegenerative disease in older adults in the Western world.
Dr. Daniel Shalev, the lead scientist wrote, "So how does obesity or diabetes contribute to a 50% increase in the risk of dementia?".
And, "Many of the same processes that affect coronary arteries and visceral organs also impact the brain. Inflammation leads to the activation of microglia and astrocytes. This causes the release of cytokines and reactive oxidants, ultimately leading to neuronal dysfunction or death. Critically, this process can unleash a vicious cycle: dying neurons can cause more inflammation, thereby creating a cascade of neurodegeneration".
The findings strongly suggested if you are obese, your risk of dementia is substantially higher compared to non-obese individuals.
With an aim to find a natural compound which processes neuroprotective activity, researchers evaluated the neuroprotective effects of extracts from the radix of C. aromatica (ECAs, Turmeric) on free radical damage cells.
The study included the model of oxidative stress damage (H2O2-damaged PC12 cells) induced by injection of 400 µM H2O2.
Compared to ECAs as the same doses, 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) from turmeric showed markedly the increase of the rate of neuron survival and enhancement of the antioxidant enzyme activities via the inhibition of the level of ROS.
In other words, 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) from turmeric exerted a better neuron-protective and antioxidant activity than of ECAs.
Furthermore, the 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) also attenuated the intracellular Ca2+ overloading in the induction of psychiatric overtones, such as depression, anxiety, cognitive dysfunction and decreased the activation of proteins and matrixes involved cell apoptosis, similar to those of ECAs.
The efficacy of the 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) against the degeneration of neurons was attributed to the presence of the active compound diarylheptanoids.
Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "These findings indicated that the effects of HCECA and MCECA on inhibiting the cells damage induced by H2O2 in PC12 are better than other extracts from the radix of C. aromatica".
In order to reveal more information about turmeric neuroprotective effects, researchers evaluated the effects of curcumin against nicotine-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation in an animal model.
This study included 60 adult male rats divided randomly into six groups. Group 1 received 0.7 ml/rat normal saline, group 2 received 6 mg/kg nicotine. Groups 3, 4, 5 and 6 were treated concurrently with nicotine (6 mg/kg) and curcumin (10, 20, 40 and 60 mg/kg i.p. respectively) for 21 days.
According to the Open Field Test (OFT), curcumin-treated groups (40 and 60 mg/kg) reduced the nicotine-induced motor activity disturbances.
Before injection of curcumin nicotine treatment showed the increase of lipid peroxidation observed by the overexpression of ROS, proinflammatory cytokines, and protein associated with neuron-apoptosis in the hippocampus.
Furthermore, nicotine also reduced the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the tested rats in the hippocampus.
Injection of curcumin reversed all alternation by attenuating nicotine-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress and inflammation; and elevating the levels P-CREB and BDNF associated with the improvement of cognitive function,
Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compounds, particularly curcumin may be considered a supplement for the protection of neurons' integrity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Turmeric Protects the Stomach Against Gastric Ulcer Developing
Gastric or stomach ulcer is a condition of localized tissue erosion in the lining the stomach.
The most common symptoms of gastric ulcers are abdominal pain, bloating, septic shock, dyspepsia, and blood in the stool due to bleeding, unintended weight loss, and loss of appetite and gastrointestinal discomforts.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of mood disorder, leading to reduced quality of life in many patients.
The imbalance between stomach acid and upper GI tract mucosa are the main cause of the condition onset associated with the use of certain medication, including aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic gastritis.
Epidemiologically, periodontal disease, aging, smoking, long-term use of mechanical ventilation and critical illness are at an increased risk of gastric ulcer.
According to studies gastric ulcer can be preventable, you can protect yourself against the risk gastric ulcer by
1. Adding dietary phytosterols and phospholipids
Experiments using animal peptic ulcer models showed that the lipid fraction in foods from the staple diets of low prevalence areas gave protection against both gastric and duodenal ulceration, including ulceration due to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and also promoted healing of ulceration.
2. Reducing intake of NSAID
NSAID has been proven to cause gastric Ulcer(9), by inhibiting the body’s production of prostaglandins, hormones that protect the stomach lining.
3. Quitting smoking
Cigarette smoking increases xanthine oxidase activity, leukotrienes, and nitric oxide production and also neutrophil infiltration in the gastric mucosa(13).
4. Not missing your dental appointment
The study showed that a significantly higher proportion of subjects with peptic ulcer reported that they lost five or more teeth (35.3 vs. 17.4%, p<0.001) or that they were told they had periodontitis (33.5 vs. 20.7%, p<0.001)(8).
5. Reducing stress
Stress had been found to increase the onset of gastric ulcer in people who suffered from the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami. The incidence of all types of peptic ulcers was 1.5-fold increased after the earthquake.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of gastric ulcer, researchers examined the intact (TrPP) and modified, and the low-molecular-weight (MTrPP) forms of pectic polysaccharides isolated from turmeric against a gastric ulcer in vitro and in vivo models.
Compared to TrPP, MTrPP possessed a significantly better ulcer-preventive property by inhibiting ulcer scores up to 85%.
More precisely, MTrPP exerted an effective muco-protection, inhibited the expression of H(+), K(+)-ATPase in the ulcer forming and of H. pylori growth/adherence, higher antioxidant/cytoprotective mechanisms associated to the gastric lesion.
By comparing the chemical contents in TrPP, and MTrPP, researchers suggested that the efficacy of MTrPP in the protection against the formation of the gastric ulcer may be attributed to the levels of galacturonic acid (687mg/g; TrPP-544mg/g) and galactose (52.9%; TrPP-21.7%) in the inhibition of inflammation.
In other words, the low molecular weight of MTrPP (155kDa; TrPP-13kDa) possesses higher antiulcer potential compared to that of TrPP.
In order to reveal more information about turmeric anti-gastric ulcer activity, researchers evaluated the effect of C. Angustifolia and M. arundinacea on forced swimming-induced hypothermia and gastric ulceration in rats.
According to the observation of 72 hours periodically and mortality recorded up to seven days, the application of both drugs did not produce any toxic symptoms or mortality even up to the maximum dose level of 4400 mg/kg.
Both the test drugs showed a significantly reversed the stress-induced gastric ulceration compared to stress-control rats.
Taken altogether, curcumin used in the intact (TrPP) and modified, and the low-molecular-weight (MTrPP) forms may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric, Promotes the Reproductive System Functioning in Vitro and Vivo
The reproductive system is a system of sex organs with a function to produce offspring.
In males, the reproductive system consists of the testes, where sperm is produced, and the penis.
In females, the structures of the reproductive system include the clitoris, labia minora, labia majora, and Bartholin's glands and internal structures include the vagina, uterus, and the ovaries.
The most common cause of reproductive organ disease is an infection. In females, reproductive tract infections can affect the upper reproductive tract (fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterus) and the lower reproductive tract (vagina, cervix, and vulva).
In males, most cases of infection are found on the penis, testicles, urethra, or the vas deferens.
Some cases of reproductive diseases such as cancer have been found to affect reproductive functioning, leading to infertility.
Fertility is a natural capability to produce offspring. Infertility is a condition in which the couple fails to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse or the female cannot carry the pregnancy to full term.
According to the statistics, over 5 millions couple alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world, because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seeks help from a professional specialist.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the improvement of reproductive functioning, researchers
examined the effects of Curcuma longa and curcumin (CUR) on reproductive systems, by searching the detailed literature survey concentrated on the protective effects of C. longa and curcumin on the activity of the reproductive organs.
According to the results of the searching from PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Iran- Medex, injection of C. longa and curcumin decreased the risk of cancer and other malignant diseases in the reproductive system by inhibiting the production of the proinflammatory cytokines and promoting the proteins associated with anti-apoptosis in the cells of the reproductive system.
Furthermore, C. longa and curcumin exerted a protective effect on the activity of the reproductive organs through their antioxidant effects in normal cells.
Moreover, C. longa and curcumin also exhibited different reproductive effects depending on the doses and the type of cells.
In order to discover more information about CUR reproductive activity, researchers examined the effect of on testis and testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) in rats with establishing chronic variable stress (CVS).
A total of 21 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats included in the study were divided into three groups: 1) control, 2) CVS and 3) CVS+ CUR (100 mg/kg/day dissolved in 0.5 mL of olive oil). All of the animals in control, CVS, and CVS+CUR groups were sacrificed after 15 days.
Injection CUR showed a significant effect in protecting the reproductive functioning by inhibiting the change of normal range testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) serum levels and seminiferous tubule apoptotic cells in the CVS group compared to the control.
Based on the results, Dr. the lead scientist said, "Our findings propose that curcumin might have curative potential on the reproductive system function and its impairment. It's regulated by stress and reproductive-related hormones".
Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound may be considered remedies for the treatment of reproductive dysfunction, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
