Cranberry, the Anti-Psychosis Remedy

Psychosis is an abnormal condition that causes the inability of the mind to determine what is real and what is not, leading to abnormal behaviors, and emotions.

The most common symptoms of psychosis are false beliefs or delusions and seeing or hearing things that a healthy person does not see or hear.

According to the statistics provided by the US government, in 2017, approximately 46.6 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States are living with mental illness, representing 18.9% of all U.S. adults.

The Mental Health Illness suggested that 3.5% of the American population is experiencing psychosis.

The most common psychotic disorders are

* Schizophrenia: is a serious mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and acts.

* Schizophreniform disorder is considered the acute case of Schizophrenia with symptoms that occur for a time period of at least one month but no more than six months.

* Schizoaffective Disorder: is a condition with symptoms similar to those of schizophrenia, accompanied by additional periodic symptoms of mood (or affective) disorders.

Besides hearing or seeing something that is not real, other common symptoms of psychosis disorder are a constant feeling of being watched, disorganized or bizarre speech or writing, inappropriate or unusual behavior, and strange body movements or positioning.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of a change in personal hygiene, appearance and personality, irrational, angry, or fearful response to loved ones, and inability to sleep or concentrate.

Conventionally, early diagnosis of psychosis can increase the rate of od successful treatment.

A combination of antipsychotic medication and family intervention, cognitive behavioral therapy, supportive psychotherapy and case management, skills training, and education have been found to induce treatment outcomes.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia.

Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of mental disorders associated with illusion, researchers examined the effect of aqueous cranberry extract (ACE) on MK-801-induced psychosis in mice.

The study included selected MK-801-treated mice administered ACE (1 and 2 g/kg, p.o.) for 14 days.

According to tested differentiation of various behavioral parameters and neurochemical estimations such as dopamine (DA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), norepinephrine (NE), gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate, and glycine and markers of oxidative stress such as nitrate levels, psychosis-induced mice exerted a significant elevation of immobility time in forced swim test, locomotor activity, and reduction in time of permanency in rota-rod test, escape latency time in Cook's pole test.

However, after treatment of ACE, MK-801-induced psychosis exerted a significant alteration in the above-mentioned behavioral parameters.

Furthermore, ACE also showed a reversal of a significant increase in DA, 5-HT, and NA levels and a decrease in GABA, glutamate, and glycine levels in the brain associated with improved psychotic function against MK-801- mice.

Moreover, ACE-treated mice showed a substantial reduction in acetylcholinesterase, D-amino acid oxidase enzyme activity, and nitrite levels associated with oxidative stress elevated by the administration of MK-801.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "Treatment with ACE once for 14 days (1 and 2 g/kg) significantly ameliorated the behavioral symptoms in experimentally induced psychosis by virtue of neuromodulation and decreased oxidative stress".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment of psychosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beta-Sitosterol, A Promising Natural Hormone Estrogen Therapy

Estrogen is a primary female sex hormone, responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics.
The estrogenic effect is an action that stimulates the production of the hormone estrogen in case of deficiency.

On the other hand, the anti-estrogenic effect is an action of binding the estrogen receptor(ERα ) and/ERβ in inhibiting the excessive levels of estrogen circulating in the body.

Menopause is a condition in which a woman is in the transition stage of permanent cessation of the ovaries functions in egg production because of less production of estrogen and progesterone, signaling the end of the reproductive phase of a woman's life.

In menopause, menstruation has become irregular and slowly stops over time, but in some women, menstrual flow comes to a sudden halt.

Some researchers suggested that you officially enter the stage of menopause if you have gone 12 months without a menstrual period.

Menopause symptoms are a set of symptoms caused by the gradual decline of levels of estrogen and progesterone due to aging loss menstrual periods in women.

The reproductive tract, the urinary tract, the heart and blood vessels, bones, breasts, skin, hair, mucous membranes, pelvic muscles normally regulated by the hormone estrogen also are affected by the decline levels of the hormone.

In the concern of hormone therapy used for the treatment of menopause symptoms, herbal medicine with estrogenic effect have been under intensive investigation, with an aim to find a natural ingredient with the similar effects as of those used in hormone therapy with no side effects.

The aim of estrogenic therapy is to relieve symptoms of sleep interruption, according to the study of health-related quality of life, fatigue, and hormone-related symptoms in breast cancer survivors, and menopausal symptoms, primarily hot flashes, affects approximately two-thirds of menopausal and postmenopausal women, botanicals and dietary supplement (BDS).

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of menopausal symptoms, researchers elucidated the effects of β-sitosterol and stigmasterol in the hydroalcoholic extract of Bambusa bambos as an alternative Hormone Replacement Therapy.

According to the results of the experiment
* The extract containing β-sitosterol and stigmasterol showed an estrogenic effect on the growth of MCF-7 cells in vitro.

* The tested extract showed no cytotoxicity to MCF-7 cells in any of the dilutions, but induced cell proliferation and all the dilutions except <500μg/ml have significantly increased cell multiplication.

* Furthermore, the doses of 15.6, 31.2, 62.5, and 125μg/ml of HEBB have shown influence on the proliferation rates similar to the standard 17β-estradiol.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results suggest that HEBB might be used as a safe alternative to estrogen replacement therapies".

Beta-Sitosterol may be considered a natural estrogenic remedy for the prevention and treatment of menopausal symptoms, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Tea Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), The Bioactive Compound Which Kills Esophageal Cancer Cells Before They Can Spread

Green Tea Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), The Bioactive Compound Which Kills Esophageal Cancer Cells Before They Can Spread

By Kyle J. Norton, (Master of Nutrition All right reserved)

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of esophageal cancer, some scientists suggested.

Esophageal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the esophagus. At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissues and organs.

According to statistics, in 1028 over 17,000 adults in the United States will be diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

The disease accounts for 1% of all cancers diagnosed in the United States.

The means the 5-year survival rate of esophageal cancer is 19%. It is very low compared to other types of cancer. Sadly, early diagnosed with 5 years survival rate of esophageal cancer is only 43%.

The exact causes of esophageal cancer are still unknown.

Researchers as of today, do not know why people with the same health condition and family history, are susceptible to the early onset of the disease while others do not.

However, researchers do know that smoking, age, family history, unhealthy diet, an occupation that requires frequent contact with irritants are associated with an increase in the risk of esophageal cancer.

Other researchers suggested that certain medical conditions such as obesity, GERD, achalasia and genetic mutation inherited from the parents are also the prevalent risk factors in the onset of the disease.

If you are experiencing symptoms of difficult or painful swallowing, a persistent sensation of having food lodged in the chest, and pain in the throat or back, behind the breastbone or between the shoulder blades, unintentional weight loss, coughing up blood, and heartburn that cannot go away, you may have esophageal cancer, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Green tea a precious drink processes number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In esophageal cancer cell lines Eca109 and Ec9706, injection of green tea EGCG plus chemo drug adriamycin (ADM) after 24 hours displayed a significantly increased cellular apoptosis.

According to flow cytometry assay, the combined application induced the elevation of ROS and ADM concentration in the production of cytotoxicity to the tumor cells by reducing the expression of mitochondrial membrane potential and ABCG2 protein that protect cancer cells apoptosis. without harming healthy cells.

ABCG2 protein expression plays a major role in multi-drug resistance, produced by tumor cells to accounter reaction to chemo-medicine.

Mitochondrial membrane potential is a central intermediate in oxidative energy metabolism, the deceased levels caused by toxicity ROS may result in energy depletion and subsequently, causing cells death.

Further observation also indicated that EGCG inhibited the growth of Eca109 and Ec9706 cells through ameliorating anti-apoptotic bcl-2 protein expression and promoted Bax and caspase-3 protein expressions with functions of promoting apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

BCL2 family members form hetero- or homodimers and play an important anti-apoptotic protein.

Caspase-3 protein plays a central role in the execution phase of cell apoptosis.

BAX gene. BAX is a member of the Bcl-2 gene family. plays an important role in the mediation of cell death by apoptosis.

Compared to ADM treatment alone, the Eca109/ABCG2 multidrug resistance cancer cells, the rate of apoptosis and ADM concentration were significantly higher and levels of mitochondrial membrane potential and ABCG2 expression were lower.

In other words, injection of green tea plus ADM was more effective in inducing cells death in Eca109/ABCG2 multi-drug resistance cancer cells through expression ROS and ADM in enhancing elevation of cytotoxic activity compared to ADM treatment alone.

After taking into account other co and confounders, Dr, Liu L the lead author said, " EGCG inhibited cell growth and induced esophageal cancer cell apoptosis. It reduced the bcl-2 protein expression and increased the bax and caspase-3 protein expression. EGCG reversed multi-drug resistance by reducing ABCG2 expression and increasing the anticancer drug concentration in cancer cells".

In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, application of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) without ADM measured by flow cytometry assay, after 24 hours also inhibited cancer site proliferation by increasing the expression of ROS to attenuate mitochondrial membrane potential function in energy metabolism and increase caspase-3 protein function in the induction of malignant cellular apoptosis, in a dose and time-dependent manner.

Furthermore, in the examine the PCR-TRAP argentation analysis during the experiment, EGCG also inhibited the viability of Eca109 and Ec9706 cells by suppressing cancer cells in alternating DNA transcript through telomerase activity.

More interestingly, the continuation of the study of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on the human esophageal cancer cell line ECa109 also discovered, EGCG decreased cancer cell viability and increased cancer apoptosis through expression of p16 gene demethylation in cancer cell cycle arrest.

P16 gene demethylation plays an important role in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. gene alternation was found in several types of cancer.

A low level of p16 mRNA expression is associated with the progression of cancer with malignant and aggressive behavior.

Abnormalities of the p16 gene and loss of p16 protein expression may be related to the pathogenesis and development of some cancers.

Taken together, green tea with an abundance of phytochemical Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered an adjunct therapy or in combination with standard chemo-medicine for treatment of esophageal cancer.

Cranberry Protects the Body Against Bacterial Infection

Infection is a condition caused by a harmful microbial invasion of the body tissues

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacterias are very adaptable, overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.

Out of trillions of strains of bacteria in the world, only a few cause diseases in humans. Believe it or not, our gut contains trillion microorganisms, most of which are bacteria.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection are redness and heat, swelling, fever, pain at the site of infection.

In severe cases, the patient may also experience symptoms of swollen lymph glands.

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated successfully if the types of bacteria that cause the infection are identified.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of bacterial infection, people with severe chronic disease may increase the prevalence of bacterial infection, particularly in those with cirrhosis.

Dr. Deschênes M, the lead scientist at the Université de Montréal wrote, "Bacterial infection is a frequent and severe complication of cirrhosis. Cirrhotic patients admitted for gastrointestinal bleeding are at high risk of such a complication and have been targeted in trials of antibiotic prophylaxis".

And, " patients with severe cirrhosis who are admitted for gastrointestinal bleeding have a higher risk of developing a bacterial infection during their hospitalization than other cirrhotic patients".

Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of bacterial infection, researchers examined the effect of cranberry antibacterial activity against uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli (UPEC).

According to the tested analysis, the whole extract showed a powerful antibacterial activity against UPEC compared to the selected fractions that presented a different behavior.

Myricetin and quercitrin demonstrated the highest decrease of E. coli biofilm formation compared with the control and other fractions.

However, other chemical constituents such as dihydro ferulic acid glucuronide, procyanidin A dimer, quercetin glucoside, myricetin, and prodelphinidin B led to a significant decrease of the surface hydrophobicity compared with the control.

In other words, all fractions in the cranberry extract worked synergistically to protect the host against the infection caused by E. coli

Based on the results, researchers said, "apart from proanthocyanidins, other compounds, mainly flavonoids, can act against E. coli biofilm formation and also modify UPEC surface hydrophobicity in vitro."

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Lycopene Inhibits the Risk of Dyslipidemia in Human Study

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit the oxidation caused by reactive oxygen species.
Antioxidants also play a critical role in the prevention of the oxidative stress induced by a chain of reactions as a result of over-expression of free radicals that can only be stopped with the expression of antioxidants produced by the host or from the dietary sources.

More precisely, oxidative stress is caused by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants.

Epidemiologically, over time, oxidative stress induces damage of protein, lipid, and cell DNA that lead to the incidences of chronic disease, including heart disease, RA, and cancers.

In cancer, antioxidants are molecules that process the capability to protect healthy cells against oxidative stress-induced DNA alternation.

In cardiovascular disease, antioxidants reduce the fragility and “permeability” in capillaries and prevent the clotting up of arteries due to oxidation.

In RA, antioxidant inhibits the rheumatoid joint fluid containing significant amounts of hydroxyl radical.

The overexpression of free radicals is bad. However, free radicals generated from cell metabolism may play a critical role in the synthesis of the energy of essential molecules and boosting the immune system. According to the free radical theory, over time, the damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species (ROS), can also induce skin aging.

In a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body are more than enough to accounter the expression of free radicals occurred in our body every day.

However, in people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly, the intake of dietary antioxidants such as supplements or fruits rich with antioxidants may be the only option to improve levels of antioxidants in the body.

Dyslipidemia is a condition with an abnormally high amount of lipids (e.g. triglycerides, cholesterol, and/or fat phospholipids) in the blood.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effects of lycopene on vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in a young healthy subject.

The study included blood collection of 18 men and 9 women with restriction of lycopene-containing foods for 1-wk (LYr), after a fasting state, and 3 h after an HFm and a low-fat meal (LFm).

Compared to the blood sample collected on pre-and post-meals following 1-wk of 80 mg/day lycopene supplementation (LYs) under continued dietary LYr in the fasting state, researchers found that
* LYs compared with LYr not only evoked a >2-fold increase in plasma lycopene but also increased plasma beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol.

* However, LYs did not affect plasma nitrate/nitrite, a biomarker of nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, a biomarker of lipid oxidative stress, vascular- and intercellular-adhesion molecules or C-reactive protein, the biomarkers of inflammation.

In other words, HFm-induced dyslipidemic state was inhibited by LYr or LYs but did not affect the plasma malondialdehyde, C-reactive protein, or adhesion molecules.

The results suggested that 1-wk of LYs increased plasma lycopene, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol do not have an effect on the plasma lipid-soluble antioxidant pool, biomarkers of vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in the fasted state as well as during dyslipidemia induced by an HFm in young healthy subjects.

In other words, plasma lycopene consumption inhibits dyslipidemia but does not affect the changes of parameters induced by an HFm in young healthy subjects in the short term.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ginger, the Potent anti Metabolic Syndrome Pungent Spice, Scientists Say

Ginger may have a potential and profound effect in regulating the expression of metabolic syndrome, some scientists suggested.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with the onset of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

Researchers suggested that people who have 3 of 5 above conditions are at substantial risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

There is no single cause of the metabolic syndrome. some conditions epidemiologically are associated with overweight or obesity, insulin resistance, inactive lifestyle, and poor diet.

According to the statistic, In the US, approximately, over 23 percent of adults have metabolic syndrome, many of them do not know they have it.

In fact, metabolic syndrome can be reversed through a healthy lifestyle choice, accompanied by weight loss.

Dr. Christos Pitsavos, the cardio team at the University of Athens and Society for Biomedical Diabetes Research, wrote, "Several epidemiologic studies and some clinical trials, it has been suggested that people with the metabolic syndrome may benefit from intensive lifestyle modifications including dietary changes and adopting a physically more active lifestyle."

"During the last decades increasing scientific evidence has emerged that protective health effects can be obtained from diets that are rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, and which include fish, nuts, and low-fat dairy products".

These results clearly stated that by changing the poor diet pattern to a healthy one accompanied by moderate exercise, metabolic syndrome can be reserved.

Furthermore, a healthy lifestyle in patients with metabolic syndrome also greatly improved the reduction of body weight.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers assess the effects of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and/or components of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) by searching the database of medical literature.

10 studies met the inclusion criteria with a total of 490 individuals were included in the review.

Ginger showed a significant beneficial effect on glucose control and insulin sensitivity.

Ginger significantly reduced fasting blood glucose in T2DM patients (-21.24; 95% CI: -33.21, -9.26; P < 0.001) and three-month average plasma glucose concentration.

Furthermore, ginger also displayed significant effects of improvement of lipid profile.

Dr. Zhu J, the lead scientist said, in the final report "Based on the negligible side effects and obvious ameliorative effects on glucose control, insulin sensitivity, and lipid profile, ginger may be a promising adjuvant therapy for T2DM and MetS".

Moreover, in order to gain more evidence of ginger anti-metabolic syndrome effect, a study to determine the individual and concomitant effect of 6-weeks water-based exercise and oral ginger supplement on markers that have related to metabolic syndrome and systemic inflammation in obese women with breast neoplasms was conducted the University of Mazandaran.

40 women diagnosed with breast neoplasms were randomly assigned into four groups; placebo, exercise training, ginger supplement, and exercise training+ ginger supplement groups.

Participants in the ginger supplement group and the exercise training+ ginger supplement group have orally received 4 capsules, 7 days a week and for 6 weeks.

During the experiment, the ginger supplementation and the water-based exercise have resulted in a reduction of hs-CRP, IL-10 (inflammation), insulin, glucose, insulin resistance, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglyceride (TG); but an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and ratio HDL/LDL.

These results strongly suggested that ginger supplement plus exercise demonstrates a significant effect in reducing the fasting glucose, insulin resistance, inflammation, and lipid profile and balanced the ratio of high and low-density lipoproteins.

In other words, the water-based exercise and ginger supplement group significantly showed a larger positive effect on all outcomes, compared to the water-based exercise or ginger supplement alone groups.

The findings suggested that obese breast neoplasms survivors' metabolic syndrome and elevated inflammation were totally inhibited by the application of ginger supplement plus exercise training.

Taken altogether, ginger, the pungent spice can be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome accompanied by moderate exercise without inducing any adverse effects.
