#Herbal #Andrographis Inhibits the Risk of #HeartDisease, Researcher Say

Herbal Andrographis may process certain bioactive compounds for the prevention and treatment of heart diseases, some scientists suggested.Heart disease is the medical condition associated with the blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, heart rhythm, and a heart defect caused by the accumulation of plaques.

Plaque made up of cholesterol, fatty molecules, and minerals accumulated in the arteries can cause stiffening and hardening of the arterial wall and narrowing of the arteries, affecting the transportation of oxygen risk blood to the heart.

These result suggested that people who follow the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, red med meat and processed foods and over the use of calcium supplement are associated with the increased risk plaque building up.

Long-term building-up plaques can cause substantial damage to the arterial wall, facilitating the onset of heart disease.

According to statistics, heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day and approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.

The exact causes of heart disease are debatable. Researchers do not why people who over a few decades of following the Western diet, only some are susceptible to heart disease while many do not, even they have the same health conditions.

The differentiation suggested that some people may process certain genetic prepositions which
can increase the development of heart disease.

Dr. Seka Kathiresan, the lead scientist in the study"Genetics of Human Cardiovascular Disease" Cardiovascular disease encompasses a range of conditions extending from myocardial infarction to congenital heart disease most of which are heritable", and

"ANGPTL3mutations as a cause of familial combined hypolipidemia, BAG mutations for dilated cardiomyopathy, NT5E mutations for arterial calcification, KCNJ5 mutations for hereditary hypertension due to aldosterone-producing adenomas, and KLHL3 or CUL3mutations for hypertension and hyperkalemia".

Other risk factors, according to epidemiological studies include obesity insulin resistance or diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure, being physically inactive, smoking, and eating an unhealthy diet are also associated with disease onset.

However, most people who carry some of the risk factors have never developed heart disease.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

In the concern of ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury in the increase of the complication of myocardial infarction (MI), researchers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences conducted a study with an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole herb which processes a cardioprotective effect.

In the rat model, hydroalcoholic extract of Andrographis paniculata was evaluated against the left anterior descending coronary artery (LADCA) ligation-induced I-R injury of the myocardium.

Selected MI rats were induced by LADCA ligation for 45 min followed by reperfusion for 60 min and divided into five experimental groups viz., sham (saline-treated, but LADCA was not ligated), I-R control (saline-treated + I-R), benazepril (30 mg/kg + I-R), A. paniculata (200 mg/kg per se) and A. paniculata (200 mg/kg + I-R).

* In the I-R control group, LADCA ligation showed a significant cardiac dysfunction evidenced by reduced hemodynamic parameters; mean arterial pressure (MAP), and heart rate (HR).

* The I-R control without treatment of the herbal extract expressed a decline of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione (GSH) but enhanced lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress.

After 30 days of 200 mg/kg A. paniculata administered orally, the treated group showed favorable improvement in hemodynamic and left ventricular contractile function, restoration of the myocardial antioxidants, and prevention of depletion of myocytes injury marker enzymes along with inhibition of lipid peroxidation.

The results indicated that 200 mg/kg A. paniculata demonstrated a significant cardioprotective activity by inhibiting the adverse effect caused by LADCA in the rat model.

Dr. Ojha SK, the lead author said. "The cardioprotective effects of A. paniculata were found comparable to that of benazepril treatment".

Additionally, in reaffirming the cardioprotective effect of herbal Andrographis, researchers launched an investigation to examine the watery extract of Andrographis paniculata Nees (APN) activity after one hour of the development of myocardial infarction by the formation of a thrombus.

13 dogs were included in the study with 6 of the was served as a control group.

The Andrographis treatment group showed clinically significant efficacy in the improvement of the myocardial structure surrounding the initially appearing ischemic area.

Andrographis exerted a cardioprotective effect in a reversal of the damaged area by restoring the damaged area.

The degree of myocardial degeneration and necrosis in the central part of the ischemic area was mild. in the treatment, dogs compared to the control.

These observations strongly suggested that APN processes cardioprotection by limiting the expansion of ischemic focus, accelerating the reversibly ischemic myocardium.

Taken together, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of heart disease.

Tocopherols Reduce the Risk and Progression of Prostate Cancer in Vivo

The prostate gland wrapped around around a tube (the urethra), is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder.
The prostate gland is a gland that makes and stores semen. It is located below the bladder and surrounds the tube that carries urine out of your body.

Additionally, the muscles of the prostate gland also play a critical role in propelling seminal fluid into the urethra during ejaculation

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate are associated with a natural impend the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Unfortunately, aging is not the only cause of enlarged prostate.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by the growth of cells irregularly in the tissue of the prostate.

Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate gland.
According to the statistic provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the third most common cancer among Canadian men and the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer in men in Canada.

In 2017, approximately 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, accounting for 21% of all new cancer cases in men.

Furthermore, approximately 1 in 7 Canadian men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime and 1 in 29 will die from it.

The 5-year survival rate for most men with local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

In other words, For men diagnosed with prostate cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body, the 5-year survival rate is 100%.

However, the 5 years survival rate of prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, is only 30%.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of tocopherols on prostate cancer.

The study included specific Pten-/- (Ptenp-/-) mice induced cancer by activation of AKT cancer promotion signaling, fed by Ptenp-/- mice with AIN93M or 0.2% δ-T supplemented diet, at the age of 6 or 12 weeks.According to the analysis,
* δ-T treatment reduced prostate adenocarcinoma multiplicity at the age of 40 weeks by 53.3 and 42.7%, respectively.

* Furthermore, the phosphorylation of AKT (T308) that promotes cancer growth and survival was reduced in the prostate of the mice administered the δ-T diet.

* δ-T diet also, reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis in the prostate cancer cell line without affecting the oxidative stress.

Interestingly, α-tocopherol (α-T) at 0.2% in the diet exhibited anti-prostate cancer cell activity with no effects on prostate adenocarcinoma multiplicity in the Ptenp-/- mice.

After taking other factors into account, researchers said, " δ-T inhibits the development of prostate adenocarcinoma in Ptenp-/- mice, mainly through inhibition of AKT activation".

Taken together, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.Norton's

#Pintobeans Lower Non-HDL Cholesterol Levels in Vivo, Researchers Find

Cholesterol is a waxy substance carried around by lipoproteins, that do not mix with water-based blood in our body.

Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls and make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help to digest fat, particularly in the building of strong cell membranes. However, too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

There are 2 types of cholesterol. The low-density lipoprotein is also known as bad cholesterol which performs the aforementioned activity in the right levels and the high-density lipoprotein which returns cholesterol back to the liver for reuse.

However, overexpression of cholesterol can cause plaque building up on the arterial wall, leading to arterial narrowing, wall stiffness, and hardening, some major causes of heart disease and stroke.

Although high blood cholesterol does not induce any symptoms, a prolonged period of uncontrolled high blood cholesterol can cause complications of chest pain, the early sign of coronary artery disease, heart attack,.... and stroke.

According to medical guidelines, the normal goal of non-HDL cholesterol levels should be 30 mg/dL higher than the LDL cholesterol level.

For example, if your non-HDL cholesterol level= is LDL cholesterol.+ 30 mg/dL = 130 mg/dL and your HDL is 40 mg/dL = Non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio of 3.25, the ideal range of the ratio.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (LDL)/1 (HDL). If you have a number that is lowers than 4, you have healthy blood cholesterol.

Hyperlipidemia is one member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome, therefore, if you have a number that is higher than 4, your risk of cardiovascular is increased compared to people with healthy levels.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with high blood cholesterol, scientists examined the changes in cholesterol metabolism in response to whole pinto beans (wPB) and their hulls (hPB) supplemented into a diet rich in saturated fat in hamsters.

The pinto bean is also known as the common bean, genus Phaseolus and the family Fabaceae. It has a mottled appearance of darker reddish-brown spots on a lighter brownish-beige background, thus appearing painted or spotted.

The study included forty-four 9-wk-old male Golden Syrian hamsters that were randomly assigned to 4 diet groups (n = 11), including a 5% (wt:wt) fat diet [normal-fat diet (NF)], a 15% (wt:wt) fat diet [diet rich in saturated fat (HSF), saturated fatty acids accounted for 70% of total fatty acids], or HSF supplemented with 5% (wt:wt) wPB or 0.5% (wt:wt) hPB for 4 wk.

According to the plasma, liver, intestinal, and fecal samples that were collected to evaluate multiple cholesterol markers and gene targets,
* The plasma non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) concentration was significantly reduced in the wPB- and hPB-supplemented groups by 31.9 ± 3.5% and 53.6 ± 3.2%, respectively, compared to the HSF group (P < 0.01), to concentrations comparable with the NF group

* The wPB-supplemented hamsters had significantly lower liver cholesterol (45.1%, P < 0.001) and higher fecal cholesterol concentrations (94.8%, P = 0.001) than those of the HSF group.

* The expressions of hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (Hmgcr) and small intestinal acyl-coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferase 2 (Acat2) associated with the elevation of blood cholesterol were significantly decreased in animals administered wPB (by 89.1% and 63.8%, respectively) and hPB (by 72.9% and 47.7%, respectively) compared to the HSF-fed counterparts (P < 0.05).

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Pinto beans remediated high cholesterol induced by HSF in male hamsters by decreasing hepatic cholesterol synthesis and intestinal cholesterol absorption, effects which were partially exerted by the hulls".

Taken altogether, Pinto beans may be considered s functional for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Ginger and #ShellGinger in the Promotion of Healthy Longevity, According to Studies

Scientists may have a pungent spice that processes a potential for the promotion of healthy longevity, according to the study.

Compared to life expectancy which is the average number of years remaining of a given age or living of a certain group's people, longevity is a long life out of the boundary of the life expectancy.
Truly, we all dream to live healthy and with longevity. However how many of us can maintain health and prevent the onset of chronic disease?

Some researchers suggested that by following a healthy lifestyle and moderate exercise healthy longevity can be achieved.

Dr. Mehta N in the study of the healthy lifestyle impact on life expectancy wrote, "Compared to the whole US population, those with such a favorable behavioral profile had a life expectancy at age fifty that was seven years longer, and they experienced a delay in the onset of disability of up to six years".

The results clearly suggested the massively damaging effects caused by unhealthy behavioral risks on health at older ages.

Furthermore, Dr. Vincent Gremeaux and colleagues on the differentiation of exercise and longevity said, "As the number of older individuals continues to increase, it is important to develop interventions that can be easily implemented and contribute to “successful aging”".

And, " In addition to a healthy diet and psychosocial well-being, the benefits of regular exercise on mortality, and the prevention and control of chronic disease affecting both life expectancy and quality of life are well established".

Regularly moderate exercise has been found to have partially reverse effects on the aging process on physiological functions and preserve functional capability in the elderly.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that healthy longevity can be achieved by maintaining a minimum quantity and quality of exercise, preventing the development of certain cancers, and lowering the risk of osteoporosis.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a bioactive compound for healthy longevity examined the shell ginger (Alpinia zerumbet (Pers.) B.L. Burtt & R.M. Sm) of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) activity in the population in the Okinawa Islands of Japan.

According to the review of the literature, culinary shell ginger may contribute to longevity among the population in Okinawa probably due to the procession of phytochemical content with antioxidants and its effects on anti-obesity properties.

Some researchers suggested that the longevity of the population may also be attributed to the shell ginger in the promotion of health in reduced diseases by exhibiting anti-inflammatory, fungistatic, and antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus cereus activity.

Shell ginger also is proven to have a positive effect on neuraminidase enzymes and inhibition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1).

Dr. Rolf Teschke in the examination of the mortality rate of Japan's general public compared to the population on the island wrote, "Cardiovascular disease as the top cause of death for both sexes and neoplasms as the second leading cause of death in Japan nationally, with major variations among the prefectures"

And, " Comparing Japan overall with Okinawa, the mean mortality rates from ischaemic heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, and oesophageal cancer were not remarkably different. However, for Okinawa, four death categories were significantly lower, including ischaemic stroke, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, and liver cancer due to hepatitis C.

The finding clearly suggested that the intake of shell ginger which was not found in other areas in Japan may contribute to the healthy longevity of the population in the Okinawa Islands of Japan.

In a joint study led by Woosuk University, Korean scientists evaluated the compound 6-gingerol longevity-promoting activity. isolated from the most active ethyl acetate soluble fraction on Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans).

Injection of 6 gingerol elevated the survival rate of worms against stressful environments including thermal, osmotic, and oxidative conditions.

The bioactive compound elevated the antioxidant enzyme activities of C. elegans and showed a dose-depend reduction of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in worms.

Furthermore, 6 gingerols also demonstrated increased stress tolerance, leading to the promotion of stress resistance proteins.

The findings strongly suggest that 6-gingerol exerted longevity-promoting activities independently of these factors and could extend the human lifespan.

Taken altogether, ginger and shell ginger may be considered functional foods for the promotion of healthy longevity with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

Fennel Balances the Ratio of the Levels Free Radicals and Antioxidants in Our Body, Researchers Find

Imbalancing the ratio of the free radicals and antioxidants in the facilitation of oxidative stress was associated with the increased risk of the early onset of many chronic diseases, scientists found.

Fennel is a species of Foeniculum Vulgare, belonging to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), and native to the shores of the Mediterranean, may process a potential effect in improving the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the human body, therefore, adding a portion of fennel on your daily diet should be helpful in reducing the risk of diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke ...

Dr. Moylan JS, the lead author in the study "Oxidative stress, chronic disease, and muscle wasting", wrote, "If an overproduction of oxidants overwhelms the antioxidant defenses, oxidative damage of cells, tissues, and organs ensue. In some cases, oxidative stress is assigned a causal role in disease pathogenesis, whereas in others the link is less certain".

Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons produced daily in our body, reactive oxygen species, and reactive nitrogen can induce a domino's effect by stealing an electron from other molecules, leading to a continued function that cannot stop until they are paired or inhibited by the presence of antioxidant molecules.

If the generation of free radicals exceeds the protective effects of antioxidants and some co-factors, the process can cause oxidative damage accumulated during the life cycle, leading to the disruption in the function of the cells.

There are many risk factors that can increase the overexpression of free radicals, including fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, and air pollutants.

Therefore by changing your diet pattern with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less red meat and processed foods and maintaining an active lifestyle, you can absolutely balance the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in your body, thus decreasing the risk of many related chronic diseases.

In the review of the traditional use of fennel essential oils (EO) possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammable oil and insect repellent, anti-cancer, and antioxidant properties, researchers launched a comparison of essential oil and their main constituents in Citrus aurantium, C. limon, Cupressus sempervirens, Eucalyptus globulus, Foeniculum vulgare, and Thymus vulgaris.

EO of fennel showed the best free radicals scavenging capacity compared to others.

Fennel EO also was most effective against lipid peroxidation along with EO of C. limon.

Interestingly, after in-depth analysis, researchers discovered the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the EOs were plant-species-dependent and not always attributable to the EOs main components.

Additionally, in the evaluation of chemical constituents from essential oil from (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum, Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce, and Foeniculum vulgare var. Vulgare, researchers suggested
* trans-Anethole, estragole, fenchone and limonene found highly abundant in all of the examined oils demonstrated strong antioxidant activities in the DPPH radical scavenging, lipid peroxidation, and metal chelating assays
* All 3 tested essentials display significant antimicrobial activities against two species of fungi, two species of Gram-negative, and two species of Gram-positive bacteria.

Finally, in the study to assess the efficacy of medicinal plants used traditionally in folk medicine as natural healing remedies with therapeutic effects such as prevention of cardiovascular diseases, inflammation disorders, or reducing the risk of cancer, researchers found that fennel in comparison to other medical exerts a strong antioxidant effect through many of its bioactive compound such as phenolic compounds.

However, Dr. Škrovánková S, the lead scientist in the concerns of some conditions that may affect the herbal quality, said, "The antioxidant properties of medicinal plants depend on the plant, its variety, environmental conditions, climatic and seasonal variations, geographical regions of growth, degree of ripeness, growing practices, and many other factors such as postharvest treatment and processing.

Taken all together, adding a portion of fennel into your diet may have a potential effect in increasing the levels of antioxidants in your body and countering the risk of overexpression of free radicals.

Fennel Essential Oil and Extract, The Potent Anti Hypoglycemic Remedies, Scientists Reveal

Fennel may process a strong effect in preventing the abnormal rise of blood glucose in patients with diabetes, some scientists found.
In comparison to hyperglycemia with an excessive amount of glucose that circulates in the blood plasma, hypoglycemia is a condition of blood sugar, that falls below the levels of the normal range.

Patients with acute hypoglycemia may experience symptoms of clumsiness, trouble talking, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures, or death.

Most cases of hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes are due to poor management. However, eating more carbohydrates than usual, less physical activity compared to a normal day being sick or high levels of stress in patients with diabetes also can cause blood glucose uptake.

Some researchers suggested that not getting the right dosage of insulin and glucose-lowering medication also causes increased blood glucose levels.

Long-term untreated hyperglycemia can elevate the onset of some serious complications including nerve damage, kidney damage and failure, heart disease, and eye disease, particularly in food and skin problems. or retinopathy foot problems caused by damaged nerves and poor blood flow skin problems, such as bacterial and fungal infections

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species belongings to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, and antidepression agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the examine the antihyperglycemic activity of fennel essential oil in an animal model, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate rats induced by bacterial streptozotocin.

At the concentrations of 30 mg/kg body weight, the essential oil of fennel demonstrated a correction of hyperglycemia in the doses from 162.5 mg/dL to 81.97 ± 1.97 mg/dL by increasing the serum of antioxidants activity of serum glutathione peroxidase from 59.72 U/g Hb to 99.60 U/g Hb produced by the host.

The application also improved the pathological changes noticed in their kidney and pancreas, compared to the control group.

After making the final adjustment, researchers suggested that the study not only reaffirms the use of the essential oil of fennel for the treatment of hyperglycemia in folk medicine but also raises the possibility of essential oil inclusion in the antidiabetic drug industry.

Further analysis of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of selected Sudanese plants, including fennel that is traditionally used to treat diabetes, researchers at the Khartoum College of Medical Sciences, suggested that fennel extract reveals a significant antioxidant activity in DPPH free radical scavenging assay.

However, the injection of fennel extract exhibited the highest toxicity.

These findings indicated that although fennel extract processes a substantial and positive effect in reducing the spike of blood glucose intake and the use of the fennel extract can only be prescribed by herbalists and professionals in the related field.

Additionally, in the testing, the hypoglycemic effect of a single dose of Gluconorm-5 (150, 300, and 600 mg/kg body weight) made up of five plants namely Camellia sinensis, Punica granatum, Macrotyloma uniflorum, Foeniculum vulgare and Trigonella foenum-graecum in normal, glucose loaded normal and diabetes-induced rats, researchers found that

* Fifteen days of oral feeding of the Gluconorm-5 (300 and 600 mg/kg) to diabetic rats resulted in a significant (P < 0.01) reduction of blood glucose, lipid profile, liver weight, and marker enzymes as compared to those rats in whom STZ induced toxicity was untreated.

* The diabetic rats treated with the formula showed expanded islets compared to the untreated diabetic rats, which showed shrunken islets.

* Treated rats received 300 mg/kg of Gluconorm-5 showed pronounced antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, and hepatoprotective effects.

This comprehensive differentiation showed that Gluconorm-5 processes potent antidiabetic antihyperlipidemic and hepatoprotective effect properties.

Taken altogether, fennel extract, and fennel essential oil used alone or combined with other herbal antidiabetic herbal medicine can be considered an adjuvant in the treatment of hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus.

#Herbal Ashwagandha Reduces the Risk of Memory Loss, Studies Find

Memory is one of the major functions of the brain that collects and stores data or information which is retrieved when needed.

In other words, memory is the retention of information over time that have a strong influence on future action.

Memory impairment is a condition of partial or complete loss of memory, depending on the quality of the neuron that has been affected.

Memory impairment other than the physical impact is a progressive disease that can lead to permanent loss of memory due to the gradual loss of neurons in the brain.

Memory impairment can be acute or chronic.

In acute impairment, memory is temporary loss in most cases associated with physical impact on the brain that causes injury of neurons.

Chronic memory impairment is the loss of memory that can get worse overtime found mostly in the elderly with neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia.

In elderly or aging-induced memory loss is associated with the deterioration of a region of the brain involved in the formation and retrieval of memories, the hippocampus, and the reduced hormones and protein that protect and repair brain cells and stimulate neural growth.

The most common risk factors associated with memory loss in the general population are long-term use of certain medications, excessive alcohol drinking, smoking, drug abuse, depression, nutrient deficiency, stroke, and daily stress.

However, some researchers suggested the rise of memory impairment in the elderly probably is correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Scott E. Kanoski, the lead scientist in the review of the risk cognitive impairment in the Western diet consumption wrote, "Intake of saturated fats and simple carbohydrates, two of the primary components of a modern Western diet, is linked with the development of obesity and Alzheimer's Disease".

And, "Western diet intake is associated with cognitive impairment, with a specific emphasis on learning and memory functions that are dependent on the integrity of the hippocampus".

The results clearly stated if you are a Western diet follower, you are at a higher risk of memory impairment compared to healthy diet individuals.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of brain health, researchers examined the efficacy and safety of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal) on memory and cognitive functioning in adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

The prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 50 adults assigned to the treatment of either ashwagandha-root extract (300 mg twice daily) or placebo for eight weeks.

According to the analysis of Wechsler Memory Scale III subtest scores for logical memory, at week 8, the ashwagandha treatment group exerted significant improvements in both immediate and general memory, compared with the placebo group.

Futhermore, verbal paired associates I (p = 0.042), faces I (p = 0.020), family pictures I (p = 0.006), logical memory II (p = 0.006) scores were also significantly increase compared to placebo.

According to the scores of Eriksen Flanker task (p = 0.002), Wisconsin Card Sort test (p = 0.014), Trail-Making test part A (p = 0.006), and the Mackworth Clock test (p = 0.009), ashwagandha treatment group also displayed a significantly greater improvement in executive function, sustained attention, and information-processing speed also compared to placebo.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Ashwagandha may be effective in enhancing both immediate and general memory in people with MCI as well as improving executive function, attention, and information processing speed.".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the improvement of the brain health, pending the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Ginger, the Natural Antibiotics Alternative Functional Spice

Ginger may be considered a natural antibiotics alternative for the treatment of Candida albicans overgrowth without inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogenic yeast formed part of the commensal gastrointestinal mycobiota.

Candida albicans overgrowth is the most prevalent cause of fungal infections in humans.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that long-term users of antibiotics that cause an imbalance of the gut microbiome, weakened immune system, unhealthy diet, and women who are pregnant and hormone imbalance of hormone near menstruation are susceptible to the onset of the condition.

If you experience symptoms of oral thrush, recurring genital or urinary tract infections, persistent digestive issues, or joint pain. particularly, in the skin and nail fungal infections, you may have a yeast infection.

Please check with your doctor to rule out the Candida albicans overgrowth possibility.

Dr. Carol A. Kumamoto in the research team of infectious diseases in the study "Inflammation and gastrointestinal Candida colonization" suggested that Candida albicans overgrowth can be caused by other medical conditions, associated with a digestive disorder.

In the study, the doctor wrote, "Recent studies, however, show that high-level Candida colonization is associated with several diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Further, results from animal models argue that Candida colonization delays the healing of inflammatory lesions and that inflammation promotes colonization".

And, "Both inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal Candida colonization are associated with elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-17. Therefore, effects on IL-17 levels may underlie the ability of Candida colonization to enhance inflammation".

These results strongly suggested, inflammation flames the overgrowth of Candida colonization in return, the overgrowth of Candida albicans induces persistently low-grade inflammation.

With an aim to find the natural ingredient or whole food for the replacement of conventional antibiotics without inducing any effects, researchers at the Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology investigated the effect of ginger against infection caused by Candida albicans.

4 preparations of the essential oils of young and mature rhizomes, air-dried and steamed rhizomes, and seed rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Roscoe (ginger) were compared in the study.

* All ginger essential oils processed a significant anti-Candida Albicans activity.

* Essential oil from the seed and air-dried rhizomes, exerted the highest effect compared to other preparations.

* The seed and air-dried rhizomes essential oils also had a potent inhibitory activity compared to ginger oleoresins obtained by ethanol and hypercritical carbon dioxide extraction and essential oils of 5 other plants in the family Zingiberaceae.
According to the chemical constituents assay, [6]-shogaol was most active against filament formation and growth of C. Albicans, followed by citral and [6]-gingerol.

Furthermore, ginger oleoresin, especially that obtained by ethanol extraction, with a high [6]-gingerol content exhibited potent anti-growth of C. Albicans compared to essential oils of ginger and other Zingiberaceae plants.

Moreover, a vitro joint study by the Institute of Science and Technology, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of 2% chlorhexidine gel (CHX) isolated from ginger as an auxiliary chemical substance and intracanal medications on Candida albicans.

The study included 48 single-rooted human teeth randomly divided into four groups (n = 12), according to intracanal medications used: (1) Calcium hydroxide + apyrogenic saline solution (Ca(OH)2 + SS), (2) 20% ginger glycolic extract (GEN), (3) calcium hydroxide + 20% ginger glycolic extract (Ca(OH)2 + GEN), (4) apyrogenic SS (control).

At the end of the experiment, researchers found that
* CHX was effective in the complete elimination of E. coli and C. Albicans.

* ChX also significantly reduced and then completely eliminated E. faecalis after intracanal medication.

* All other applications also revealed a reduction of endotoxins, the outer membrane of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria.

In the final report, the research team concluded, "CHX and intracanal medication used were able to eliminate the microorganisms from the root canal; the endotoxins were reduced, yet not completely eliminated".

These results strongly suggested that ginger bioactive compound processes a significant antibacterial activity, particularly in those of C. Albicans.

Taken all together, there is no doubt that ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of yeast infection with no side effects.

Herbal Bilberry, the Potential Treatment for Retinitis Pigmentosa, Researchers Say

Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic condition characterized by the breakdown and gradual loss of cells in the retina.

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. The function of the retina is to convert the light received into neural signals before sending them to the brain for visual recognition.
Most cases of retinitis pigmentosa are diagnosed during the teenage years and at birth. Some patients who carry the genetic preposition may develop the disease in later years.

The later diagnosed case is usually mild with slow progression compared to those presented in the teen years and at birth.

Most common symptoms of patients with retinitis pigmentosa are difficulty seeing at night and a loss of side (peripheral) vision. However, at the disease progress into the later stage, most patients also experience tunnel vision.

Conventionally, the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa is totally depending on the condition. The aim of treatment is to slow the vision loss and improve the patient quality of life.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa with not side effects examined the effects of Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and lingonberry (Vacciniumvitis-idaea) containing high amounts of polyphenols (anthocyanins, resveratrol, and proanthocyanidins) against blue light a high-energy or short-wavelength visible light-induced retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.

According to the results from the cultured murine photoreceptor (661 W) cells exposed to blue LED light following treatment with B-ext, L-ext, or their constituents (cyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, trans-resveratrol, and procyanidin B2), B-ext, L-ext, NAC, and their active components improved the viability of 661 W cells against the blue light damage.

The efficacy was found to be attributed to the injection of tested compounds in inhibiting the generation of intracellular ROS induced by the blue LED light irradiation.

Furthermore, B-ext and L-d with also protected the cells integrity against the activation of proteins by stimuli associated with the production of production of proinflammatory cytokines.

Moreover, B-ext, L-ext, and NAC inhibited proteins involved in cell death and autophagy against cells damaged by blue light.

Dr. Ogawa K the lead scientist said, "These findings suggest that B-ext and L-ext containing high amounts of polyphenols exert protective effects against blue LED light-induced retinal photoreceptor cell damage mainly through inhibition of ROS production and activation of pro-apoptotic proteins".

In a murine model of photo-stressed retina, researchers examined the bilberry extract through a stomach tube in Balb/c mice (750 mg/kg body weight) light-induced visual function impairment.

According to the tested assays, bilberry extract suppressed photo-induced apoptosis in the photoreceptor cell layer and shortening of the outer segments of rod and cone photoreceptors.

Bilberry extracts also reduced the levels of photo-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers observed by the analysis.

In other words, bilberry inhibited the ER stress in the retina, and at least in part, in Müller glial cells.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested, "bilberry extract attenuates photo-induced apoptosis and visual dysfunction most likely, and at least in part, through ROS reduction, and subsequent ER stress attenuation in the retina".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, pending the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Potential Anti Gastric/ Stomach Cancer Remedy

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Gastric cancer or stomach cancer is a condition characterized by the abnormal growth of cells in the stomach tissue.

Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the stomach tissue.

At stage 0, due to the gastric cancer cells being restricted or completely contained within the innermost layer of the lining, patients may not experience any symptoms.

However, at the later stage, the cancer cells can travel a distance away from the stomach to infect other tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis. If the tumor grows large enough, it may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, causing blood to leak into the stomach and localized severe pain.

Besides common symptoms of cancers, patients with gastric cancer also experience some specific symptoms such as persistent abdominal (belly) pain., vague discomfort in the abdomen, a sense of fullness in the upper abdomen after eating a small meal, and heartburn or indigestion.

If you are having some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out gastric cancer possibility.

Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of the disease, such as family history, Helicobacter pylori infection, smoking, genetic preposition, certain stomach conditions, previous stomach surgery and type A blood, some researchers suggested that the most common cause of gastric cancer in the Western world is the Western diet-related disease.

Dr. Bertuccio P, the lead scientist at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, in the concern of diet pattern in the risk of gastric cancer wrote, " An unfavorable role on GC emerged for the 'Western/unhealthy' dietary pattern, with an OR of 1.51 (95% CI: 1.21-1.89)" and "A favorable role on GC emerged for the 'Prudent/healthy', with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.75 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63-0.90], for the highest versus the lowest category".

The results strongly indicated the risk of gastric cancer is substantially higher in the Western diet group compared to the lower risk of a healthy diet.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb plant has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.

The plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of gastric cancer, researchers at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine examined the effects of ursolic acid isolated from bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) against the pathogenesis of gastric cancer characterized by excessive proliferation, abnormal differentiation, and reduced apoptosis.

Ursolic acid, extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine bearberry, inhibited gastric cancer cell proliferation and induced apoptosis.

Further assessment of anti-gastric cancer, researchers discovered that ursolic acid exhibited apoptotic activity through cancer cell degradation observed in the gastric cancer BGC-823 cells.

In other words, efficacy is associated with a translocation of cofilin-1 protein that activates the function of cytochrome c in programmed cell death from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm.

These results suggested that ursolic acid activated the function of proteins (the caspase cascade) associated with the cell death and apoptotic pathway.

Where Mitochondria are the major organelles involved in the biochemical execution of apoptosis

Dr. the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "mitochondrial translocation of cofilin-1 might play a crucial role in the promotion of apoptosis and might be a key target for future treatment of human gastric cancer".

Taken altogether, Bearberry (herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) processed a major compound of ursolic acid may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with other primary medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of ursolic acid as a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdoses and acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Processes Lowering Cholesterol Property

Cholesterol produced by the liver plays an essential role in a moderate amount in orchestrating the production of steroid hormone and vitamin D, building strong cell walls, and aiding the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and fluids.

Hyperlipidemia or high blood cholesterol is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of lipids in the blood.

Blood cholesterol can be classified into
* The high-density lipoprotein also known as good cholesterol processes a function to return cholesterol to the liver.

* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in a moderate amount.

In a healthy individual, unused cholesterol is returned to the liver. However, overexpression of "bad" cholesterol due to the consumption of a high-fat diet and reduced levels of "good" cholesterol can cause bad cholesterol to remain in the bloodstream, leading to hyperlipidemia.

The healthy ratio of total blood cholesterol ("bad"/ "good") is any number that is less than 4.

Patients with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. However, over time hyperlipidemia can cause plaque to accumulate on the arterial wall, leading to atherosclerosis, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL in the US.

Some researchers suggested that the hyperlipidemic prevalence in the Western world may correlate to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Karam I, the lead scientist in examing the said, "Hyperlipidemia, a group of metabolic disorders characterized by the elevated levels of lipids, is a major modifiable risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease [5]. These lipids include cholesterol, cholesterol esters, phospholipids, and triglycerides. Increased levels of LDL are related to the development of atherosclerosis [15,16].

And, "The result showed that there was a significant increase in hyperlipidemia biomarker which includes TC, TG, LDL, and HDL. There were histological changes in organs which confirm the previous result of blood lipid. That means high-fat diet successfully induces hyperlipidemia in rats, to make disease model of hyperlipidemia.".

The life-long condition of hyperlipidemia is treatable. By a change of diet and daily moderate exercise, you may control the condition without medication.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of heart disease, researchers examined the effects of Ashwagandha on lowering blood cholesterol.

The study included rats induced by a high-fat diet treated by aqueous extract of fruits of Withania coagulans for 7 weeks.

According to the tested analysis during the experiment, administration of the extract showed a significantly reduced elevated serum cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoprotein levels.

In triton-induced hypercholesterolemia., the aqueous extract of fruits of Withania coagulans exerted a significantly hypolipidemic activity.

Furthermore, according to the tested analysis of the liver tissues of treated hyperlipidemic rats, the extracts also inhibited the degenerative changes, compared to hyperlipidemic controls.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The hypolipidemic effect of W. coagulans fruits was found to be comparable to that of an Ayurvedic product containing Commiphora mukkul".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for lowering blood cholesterol, pending the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Anti Diabetes Functional Remedy

Scientists may have found a medicinal plant for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, according to the studies.

Diabetes is a medical and chronic condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

In other words, diabetes is a result of abnormally and chronically high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Insulin resistance is a hallmark of diabetes. The disease is either caused by cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Insulin receptors are areas on the outer part of a cell that allow the cell to bind with insulin in the blood. When the receptors are clogged up, the cell can not take glucose (sugar) from the blood and use it for energy.

Researchers do not know what causes insulin resistance in diabetic patients. However, researchers do know that long-term intake of a poor diet with high saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed food is one of many risk factors associated with clogging up the insulin receptors sites, leading to high blood glucose.

Dr. David Hefner in the concern of the Western diet linked to type 2 diabetes, wrote, "The researchers surveyed 42,000 men over a 12-year period. The men's eating habits were divided into two groups: those who followed a Western diet and those who followed a "prudent" diet with fruit, vegetables, whole grain, fish and poultry. "Over the course of the study ... 1,321 new cases of Type 2 diabetes were diagnosed".

These results clearly suggested that by changing to a healthy diet pattern with high fruits and vegetables and reducing the intake of saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed food, diabetes is preventable.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and for the treatment of urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.

The herbal plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

Finding a natural formula for the treatment of diabetic symptoms that leads to the investigation of 7 plants and a herbal mixture used for the traditional treatment of diabetes in streptozotocin-diabetic mice conducted by the University of Ulster.

In streptozotocin diabetic mice, the formula was supplied as 6.25% by weight of the diet for 9 days.

The consumption of diets containing bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), significantly reduced the excessive hunger and abnormally large intake of solids and excessive thirst or excess water drinking associated with streptozotocin diabetes.

However, other herbal plants in the herbal formula such as bayberry (Cinnamomum tamala), meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), Senna (Cassia occidentalis), and the herbal mixture did not alter these parameters.

Bearberry, mistletoe, and tarragon retarded body weight loss, and reduced symptoms of diabetes without significantly altering plasma glucose or insulin concentrations.

The results suggested that only bearberry, goldenseal, mistletoe, and tarragon can counter some of the symptoms of streptozotocin diabetes without affecting glycemic control.

Taken altogether, bearberry (Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) may be used as a functional remedy for the treatment of some diabetic symptoms, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter in a human study

Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) May Process Anti-Intestinal Metaplasia (IM) and Atypical Hyperplasia (AH), Researchers Say

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role in aiding the digestive system by secreting acid and enzymes that digest food induced by the stomach muscles that contract periodically, to churn the food and enhance digestion.

Atypical hyperplasia is a precancerous condition characterized by the accumulation of abnormal cells.

Intestinal metaplasia is a pre gastric cancer condition caused by the change of cells in the stomach.

The exact causes of the condition are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that smoking and infection caused by H. pylori infection, genetic preposition, and environmental factors are some risk factors associated with the onset of intestinal metaplasia.

Gastric cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular and uncontrollable cell growth in the stomach lining in the beginning. At the advanced stage, the malignant cells can travel a distance away through blood and fluid circulation to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Researchers do not know why some people with the same health condition are susceptible to the risk of gastric cancer, while others do not. The exact causes of gastric cancer are also unknown. However, some researchers suggested that Age, diet, and stomach disease, such as can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer.

Both atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer share the common symptoms of stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite,... and indigestion. However, common symptoms of unexpected weight loss and stomach ulcers can only be found in gastric cancer while iron deficiency anemia is found in the majority of patients with atrophic gastritis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).

Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of 67%.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of gastric diseases, scientists examined the efficacy of Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) decoction on intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH).

Where XWYP is a traditional Chinese Medicine formula containing Smilax glabrate, Hedyotis diffusae, Taraxacum mongolicum, Caesalpinia sappan, Paeonia alba, Cyperus rotundus, Bletilla striata, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, etc.

According to the results of 138 cases of intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH) of the gastric mucosa of chronic gastritis that was treated by Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) orally 5-7g, for a period from 2-4 months, compared to control, the decoction showed a significant effect rate of IM was 91.3% and that of the AH was 92.16% compared to the control group of 21.3% and 14.46% respectively.

More precisely, XWYP not only had marked therapeutic effects for IM and AH but also showed no toxic effects in the animal experiments revealed no toxic effect,

These results strongly suggested that a safety guarantee was provided for its clinical application.

Taken altogether, Dandelion in a combination with other Chinese medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia (AH), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Inhibits the Onset and Progression of Chronic Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a condition associated with the inflammation of the prostate and the areas around the prostate.

According to the statistics provided by the American Family Physician, approximately 8.2 percent of men in the US are living with prostatitis. The conditions account for 8 percent of visits to urologists, and up to 1 percent of visits to primary care physicians.

Believe it or not, in 2000, prostatitis cost over $84 million, including the charge of diagnosis and treatment.

The most common symptoms of prostatitis are painful, difficult, and/or frequent urinating, groin pain, rectal pain, abdominal pain and/or low back pain, fever, chills, and body aches.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of urethral discharge, painful ejaculation or sexual dysfunction, and blood in the urine.

The exact causes of prostatitis are not identified, some researchers suggested that nerve damage in the lower urinary tract caused by surgery or trauma to the area has been found to induce prostatitis in patients.

Conventionally, most cases of prostatitis are treated by antibiotics in cases of infection, alpha-blockers to relax the bladder neck, and muscle fibers, and anti-inflammatory medicine to ease pain and discomforts.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential and natural ingredient for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as chronic prostatitis/ chronic pelvic pain syndrome type III (CP/CPPS), researchers examined the effect of turmeric on chronic bacterial prostatitis.

Phase II, the randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 60 patients who were examined by the University of Catania from June 2015 to January 2016 we enrolled 60 consecutive due to CP/CPPS III.

At the end of the experiment, the treatment group showed a significant improvement in the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index, IIEF-5 (+ 3.5; p < 0.01), particularly other symptomatic parameters compared to placebo.

Participants were then allocated to receive treatment (Group A) or placebo(Group B). Treatment consisted of rectal suppositories of Curcumin extract 350 mg (95%) and Calendula extracts 80 mg (1 suppository/die for 1 month). Patients of Group B received 1 suppository/die for 1 month of placebo.

The efficacy of the treatment with Curcumin and Calendula was associated with the reduction of inflammatory cytokines and of inflammatory cells.

Based on the findings, Dr. Morgia G, the lead researcher said, "In this phase II clinical trial, we showed the clinical efficacy of the treatment with Curcumin and Calendula in patients with CP/CPPS III".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with Calendula may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Fennel, The Natural Free Radical Scavenger, Scientists Find

Fennel may be the next generative functional food with the potency in blocking the overexpression of free radicals in the induction of chronic illness, some scientists suggested.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron that cause oxidation by stealing an electron from other molecules to give rise to a chain activity. Once free radical starts its domino effect, it can not be stopped until two free radical species react with each other to form a stable, non-radical adduct or are inhibited by the presence of antioxidants.

Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.

The relationship between free radicals and antioxidant are summarized by Dr. V. Lobo, the lead author in the study "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health ", "A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues. Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases. Hence the application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping with this oxidative stress".

These explanations suggested that intake of antioxidants from the food sources in the stimulation of antioxidant enzymes in the body is beneficial in maintaining good health, However, the doctors continued, "Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health. Thus, the search for effective, nontoxic natural compounds with antioxidative activity has been intensified in recent years".

Overexpression of free radicals or imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body can initiate oxidative stress. A prolonged period of oxidative stress in the human body plays a major part in the development of chronic and degenerative illnesses such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, aging, cataract, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The functional herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

Fennel is an excellent source of natural antioxidants and contributed to the daily antioxidant diet. The functional food is found to process a free radical scavenging activity, particularly in the application of its phenolic and flavonoid.

In the examine the effects of fennel essential oil in the presence of overexpression of free radicals, researchers found, that injection of the oil exerts a strong antioxidant activity in comparison with butyrated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene., however, injection of ethanol and water extracts of fennel showed less effective compared to essential oil.

Furthermore, in the evaluation of the essential oils of the fruits of three organically grown cultivars of Egyptian fennel (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum, Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce, and Foeniculum vulgare var. vulgare) in antibacterial and antioxidant effects, researchers showed that all three cultivars contain a great source of trans-Anethole, estragole, fenchone, and limonene.

All phytochemicals demonstrated significant activity in free radical scavenging, inhibited lipid peroxidation, and metal chelation.

Additional differentiation suggested that essential oils from the azoricum and dulce cultivars were more effective antioxidants than that from the vulgare cultivar and essential oils from 3 species display similar antimicrobial activities against two species of fungi, two species of Gram-negative and two species of Gram-positive bacteria.

More importantly, in the examine the effect of essential oil on fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) lipophilic secondary metabolites, researchers at the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University, discovered that
* The oil exhibited moderate antioxidant activities.

* The antioxidants in the essential oil are found to protect the healthy cells and stimulate the expression of free radicals in exerting cytotoxic activity against HeLa (human cervical cancer), Caco-2 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma), MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma), CCRF-CEM (human T lymphoblast leukemia) and CEM/ADR5000 (adriamycin resistant leukemia) cancer cell lines;

* The most effective of the IC50 values are between 30-210 mg L-1.

These results suggested essential oil from fennel is processed as a great source of antioxidants with the function of balancing the ratio of free radicals in the body, thus preventing the initiation of oxidative stress.
