                                       Anemia

It is hard to believe that America, a country with one of the highest standard of living in the world having over 20 million people with the disease of anemia caused by unhealthy diet, and nutritional deficiency, with protein and fat intake 30% more than any other country in the world. Most people understand that anemia is caused by iron deficiency in the bloodstream. In fact, anemia is characterized by deficiency in the hemoglobin of the red blood cells diminishing the ability of the blood to transport oxygen to our cells and to remove carbon dioxide. In this article, we will discuss causes of anemia.

Anemia is defined as a health condition in which our body do not have enough red blood cells or less than the normal quantity of hemoglobin in the blood to carry the function of delivery oxygen and nutrient to the tissue, including organs and cells. To read more about Anemia, click here

                              The Symptoms

1. Fatigue
Fatigue is a common symptom of people with anemia which causes less oxygen being transported to the tissues of the body because of low count of red blood cells in bloodstream.

2.Weakness
Since the bloodstream cannot provide enough oxygen as well as nutrition to our body tissues, it interferes with normal function of organs resulting in weakness in anemia patients.

3. Fainting and dizziness
Our brain needs protein and fat to function daily. It also needs oxygen to nourish it's cells. Without enough red blood cells to carry oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from it' s cells, it may cause fainting.

4. Shortness of breath
Since there are never enough oxygen in the bloodstream, it causes the reaction of our lung to breath faster so it can get enough oxygen to our body tissues causing shortness of breath.

5. Heart palpitations
People with anemia have less oxygen in their bloodstream. In order to provide enough oxygen to nourish our body's cells, their heart has to work harder resulting in heart palpitation.

6. Pale complexion
Pale complexion is caused by iron deficiency. Iron is vital for our blood cells reproduction for replacing the break down of the old ones. Deficiency of iron causes low red blood cells in the bloodstream resulting in a pale color in our skin.

7. Difficulty concentrating
Difficulty concentrating caused by iron deficiency causes less production of new red blood cells to replace the breaking down of the old ones resulting in less oxygen being delivered to certain regions of the brain cells making concentration difficulty.

8. Excess menstruationExcess menstruation is characterized by loss of abnormal quantities of blood during menstruation. It is caused by iron deficiency anemia in women as a resulting of massive breaking down of old red blood cells.

                                 Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation) is defined as a condition of severe uterine pain during menstruation. Some women may experience periodic pains during or prior to, or after menstrual periods in the lower abdomen as resulting of over production of certain hormones in the prostaglandins family. In traditional Chinese medicine, dysmenorrhea is defined as a pain in the lower abdomen, appearing with menstrual cycle that can spread over to the whole abdomen and lumbosacral region, depending to diagnosis.

Girls in South East Asia have learnt in their early women life from grand mother wisdom, that they do not engage in any activity, distorting their regular period. Menstrual disorder should be treated immediately, otherwise, it may cause wide range of women diseases, such as infertility, according to Traditional Chinese medicine.
Deficiency of blood is defined as a condition of liver's inability to perform its function of blood formation leading to qi stagnation in the body, leading to abnormal function of the reproductive organs. Symptoms of deficiency of blood and qi stagnation include

                            The Symptoms

1. Abdominal pain after menstruation
As the yang starts to drop, it allows the spleen to push the blood stagnation in the uterus out through the vagina. Since there is not enough qi for the spleen to perform its function or abnormal function of spleen in blood transportation, leading over production of prostaglandins hormones, causing menstrual cramps and pain.

2. Period is thin and volume is small
It is easy to understand why the period is thin, since there are not enough blood circulation in the body to supply energy for our body, the primitive brain reaction is to divert blood to other organs, leading to the onset of thin period, sometimes no period at all. On the other hand, it can be explained as blood is stasis in some organs other than the uterus, causing not enough blood for menstruation. This symptom can cause infertility as the uterus is not warm enough to support the implantation of fertilized egg.

3. Tiredness
Circulation of Blood is important to transport oxygen and energy to nourish the body cells in daily activity, deficiency of blood causes abnormal function of spleen in blood transportation and its function in energy distribution, leading to tiredness.

4. Loose stools
Since spleen is important for digestive function and energy distribution, deficiency of blood causes abnormal function of food absorption, leading to loose stools, as food can not be digested properly.

5. Pale complexion
Pale complexion normally can be viewed as kidney yang deficiency, but in this case, it is caused by liver abnormal function in blood formation or spleen's inability to transport blood to the whole body.

Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder named after German physician Alois Alzheimer. Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal. In this article, we will discuss how to prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease with Vitamins.

                                     The Causes

1. Toxic chemicals in our environment
Accumulation of aluminum and mercury deposits usually present in the area of the affected brain and our body can assimilate high amounts of aluminum without knowing it.

2. Testosterone deficiency
As men age, the pituitary gland produces less testosterone and more free testosterone is converted to estrogen caused by the sex hormone binding globulin and the increasing of by-product prolactin of testosterone stimulating the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase that causes the conversion of testosterone to gihydro-testosterones DHT resulting in low levels of testosterone.

3. Alcohol abuse
Alcohol not only increases the heart palpitation and high blood pressure but also damaging of the liver that is vital for toxin cleansing. If the liver can not perform it's function, that causes free radicals building up in all organs in our body including our brain.

4. Poor diet
North Americans consume 30 % more fat than any other people in the world. Our brain requires fat to function better but over supplement of fat causes cholesterol build-up and high blood pressure resulting in poor blood circulation as well asdamaging of arterial wall.

5. Obesity
Obesity increase the abdominal fat that not causes the forming of aromatase enzyme resulting in aromatasing testosterone into estrogen but increase the building up of cholesterol in the brain blood vessels, without enough oxygen brain cells die off.

6. Diabetes
High concentration of glucose causes the blood thickening resulting in poor circulation of blood, depleting oxygen levels that is vital to brain cells needs.

7. Vitamin and minerals deficiency
Our body needs all kind of vitamins and minerals to perform it's function everyday. Any deficiency not only causes a weakened immune system but also other kinds of disease as well as faciliate the eventual onset of Alzheimer's disease.

8. Hear disease
Heart disease weakens the function of the heart resulting in less blood flow to the brain region causing depletion of oxygen that is vital for brain cells to function properly.

9. High levels of cholesterol
Clogged brain vessels can not provide enough oxygen to its cells needs.

10. Smoking
Smoking not only causes the depletion of oxygen levels but calcium build up in the arterial wall resulting in damaging of brain cells.

                                 Alkylresorcinols

Alkylresorcinols is a phytochemical in the class of Stilbenoids, found abundantly in whole grain wheat, rye, barley, etc.

Health Benefits
1. Antioxidants
In the review of Antioxidant activity-guided fractionation based on three in vitro, antioxidant assays (Folin-Ciocalteu, TEAC, and leucomethylene blue assays) used to identify major antioxidants in blue wheat (UC66049 Triticum aestivum L.), found that Alkylresorcinols were among the most active antioxidants extractable with 80% ethanol in the TEAC assay. However, this may be due to a color change instead of a bleaching of the ABTS radical, according to "Antioxidant Activity-Guided Fractionation of Blue Wheat (UC66049 Triticum aestivum L.)"by Tyl CE, Bunzel M.(1)

2. Anticarcinogenic effects
found that the fibre through its effect on fermentation increases esterification of bile acids reducing toxicity of the free bile acids and is involved in the production of butyrate with potential anticancer effects including BC. The fibre reduces the enterohepatic circulation of the oestrogens leading to lower plasma oestrogen concentrations. The fibre complex contains bioactive compounds such as lignans and alkylresorcinols that are antioxidative and potentially anticarcinogenic, according to "Can rye intake decrease risk of human breast cancer?"by Adlercreutz H.(2)

3. Alkylresorcinols and human health
In the review of at present, evidence from studies in human subjects does not warrant the conclusion that rye, whole grains orphyto-oestrogens protect against cancer. Some studies, however, have pointed in that direction, especially in relation to cancers of the upper digestive tract. a number of prospective epidemiological studies have clearly shown a protective effect of wholegrain cereals against myocardial infarctions. A corresponding protective effect against diabetes and ischaemic stroke(brain infarct) has also been demonstrated. It seems reasonable to assume that these protective effects are associated with one or more factors in the dietary fibre complex, according to "Rye, lignans and human health"by Hallmans G, Zhang JX, Lundin E, Stattin P, Johansson A, Johansson I, Hultén K, Winkvist A, Aman P, Lenner P, Adlercreutz H.(3)

4. Antioxidant activity and antigenotoxicity
In the incubation with 5-n-alkylresorcinols (chain lengths C15:0, C17:0, C19:0, C21:0, and C23:0) its increased self-protection capacity of HT29 human colon cancer cells against DNA damage induced by hydrogen peroxide and genotoxic fecal water samples using comet assay (single-cell gel electrophoresis assay), found that the alkylresorcinols did not exert potent antioxidant activity in the FRAP (ferric reduction ability of plasma) and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical assays. However they were able to significantly inhibit copper-mediated oxidation of human LDL (low-density lipoprotein) in vitro, and pentadecylresorcinol at 25 micromol/L increased lag time by 65 min. The results show that alkylresorcinolshave antigenotoxic and antioxidant activity under in vitro conditions, according to "In vitro antioxidant activity and antigenotoxicity of 5-n-alkylresorcinols"by Parikka K, Rowland IR, Welch RW, Wähälä K.(4)

5. Tocopherol metabolism and liver cholesterol
In the investigation of whether AR could have increased gamma-tocopherol levels via inhibition of tocopherol-omega-hydroxylase, HepG2 cells, found that AR significantly inhibited the conversion of gamma-tocopherol to its water-soluble hydroxychroman metabolite in vitro, indicating that AR may increase gamma-tocopherol levels via inhibition of tocopherol metabolism in vivo. The 4 g AR/kg diet decreased liver cholesterol (P < 0.001), but did not affect plasma lipids., according to "Cereal alkylresorcinols elevate gamma-tocopherol levels in rats and inhibit gamma-tocopherol metabolism in vitro"by Ross AB, Chen Y, Frank J, Swanson JE, Parker RS, Kozubek A, Lundh T, Vessby B, Aman P, Kamal-Eldin A.(5)

6. Fat accumulation
In the investigation of whether 5-n-alk(en)ylresorcinols, natural phenolic components of high fiber human diets, may be considered as natural regulators of excessive fat accumulation.
found that 5-n-alk(en)ylresorcinols isolated from wheat and rye bran inhibit glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, the key enzyme in triglyceride synthesis in adipocytes, specifically and effectively. Further in vitro studies showed that these compounds also prevent triglyceride accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells, according to "Inhibitory effect of natural phenolic lipids upon NAD-dependent dehydrogenases and on triglyceride accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells in culture"by Rejman J, Kozubek A.(6)

7. Antimutagenic activity
In the analyzing the antimutagenic activity of fluphenazine, todralazine, anthocyanins and alkylresorcinols, established in a battery of short-term cytogenetic tests, found that the enhancement of apoptosis by fluphenazine and by alkylresorcinols can explain a major part of their antimutagenic activity, whereas in the case of anthocyanins and of todralazine other mechanisms of antimutagenic action should be sought for, according to "Impact of four antimutagens on apoptosis in genotoxically damaged lymphocytes in vitro"by Gasiorowski K, Brokos B, Kulma A, Ogorzałek A, Skórkowska K.(7)

                                  The Causes

1. HemolysisHemolysis is an anemia caused by the breaking down of red blood cells as a result of immune reactions, and toxin and poisons. Treatments are hemodialysis or surgery.

2. Decreased red cell production by the bone marrowBone marrow is a soft fatty tissue found inside of the body's bones. If bone marrow becomes defective or malfunctions, it causes an abnormality in the production of any of the mature blood cells resulting in decreased production of red blood cells, or the rapid loss of red blood cells.

3. Blood lossBlood loss can be as a result of very heavy menstrual periods. Women can become anemic if they ignore the needs of their monthly menstruation because their blood rises and falls in a cyclical fashion. Therefore more blood nutrition is needed to counter the loss of blood during menstruation. Certain health issues may also contribute to iron loss, including chronic bleeding of the gums, hemorrhoids, or ulcer and chronic ulcer.

4. Chronic illness or anemia of inflammation

Anemia of inflammation often closely resembles iron-deficiency anemia caused by high levels of ferritin blocking release of iron in the cells into the bloodstream or high levels of transferin binding onto iron. Resent study shows that inflammation also appears to affect other important elements of iron metabolism because inflammation causes the liver to produce morw hepcidin that blocks the ferropotin to release iron.

5. Cancer therapy
Cancer treatment such as chemotherapy can reduce the production of red blood cells of the bone resulting in less oxygen in the bloodstream being transported to all parts of our body's cells.

6. Excessive alcohol drinking
Alcohol is a stimulant. Excessive alcohol drinking can contribute to vitamin deficiency , anemia, as well as inflammation anemia. It's recommended that men have no more than two drinks a day, and that women limit alcohol intake to one drink daily.

7. Smoking
Smoking causes the depletion of oxygen levels in the bloodstream as well as blocking the absorption of vital nutrients, such as folate acid and vitamin C, raising the risk of vitamin deficiency anemia.

                                 Dysmenorrhea
All women are experience menstruation disorders sometimes during their child bearing years, before menopause. Girls in South East Asia have learnt in their early women life from grand mother wisdom, that they do not engage in any activity, distorting their regular period. Menstruation disorders should be treated immediately as a normal disease, otherwise it may cause wide range of women issues, such as infertility, according to traditional Chinese medicine.

Types of dysmenorrhea In TCM perspective

There are 5 types of dysmenorrhea, depending on diagnosis
1. Blood and qi stagnation
Blood stagnation is defined as a condition of blood has become obstructed and does not flows freely to the entire body due to abnormal function of liver in regulating the transportation of blood and qi. Sometimes, it may be caused by external pathogens, qi stagnation or mental and emotional disturbances.

2. Blood deficiency
Blood deficiency is defined as condition of which there are not enough blood to circulate to the entire body due to abnormal function function of spleen in energy and qi transportation, leading to not enough blood for our body needs. It may cause by qi stagnation, anaemia or emotional and mental state disharmony and excess.

3. Damp Heat
Damp heat is defined as a condition of excessive yin deficiency or the failure of yin to control yang and yang becomes hyperactive, thus giving rise to internally extreme heat, due to abnormal function of liver in qi regulating. It is said that the symptoms can be solved by clearing liver heat, soothing liver qi.

4. Dampness or Wind
a) Dampness is defined as a condition of excessive fluids accumulated in the body caused by deficiency of kidney yin or abnormal function of spleen in blood and qi transportation, leading to abnormal function of the respiratory and digestive systems thus, affecting menstrual flow.
b) Wind
Wind is caused the extensive imbalance of either yin or yang and qi and blood, leading to abnormal function of Liver in transporting blood to nourish the reproductive organs, leading to high fever with thirst, red face and eyes, ringing in the ears and abnormal menstruation.

5. Imbalance of Kidney or Liver
a) Kidney is defined as a organ in regulating the reproductive system, function of uterus and growth of our body. Imbalance of kidney yin or yang causes the uterus to become depleted, leading to irregular periods. Unhealthy diet, raw food diet or occupation can cause imbalance of kidney qi.

b) Live is the organ in regulating the formation of blood and the function of spleen in blood transportation, including the reproductive organs. Abnormal function of liver may disrupt the qi and blood flow in the body, leading to blockage of the meridian system, resulting in dysmenorrhea. Excessive drinking, unhealthy diet, physical and emotional stress are said to cause liver imbalance.
