Lei Gong Teng (Radix Tripterygium wilfordii)

Lei Gong Teng is also known as Thunder god vine. The bitter and very toxic herb has been used in TCM as an anti-inflammatiory and immunosuppressive agent and to resolve toxins, treat proteinuric renal disease, etc., as it expels Wind-Damp, resolves edema, calms pain, etc., by enhancing the functions of Liver and kidney channels.

Ingredients
1. Saponins
2. Triptolide
3. Tripdiolide
4. triptonoterpene
5. tritotriterpenic acid C
6. 3-epikatonic acid
7. Polpunonic acid
8. Triptodihydroxy acid methyl ester
9. 1,8-dihydroxy-4-hydroxymethyl anthraquinone
10 Tannin
11. Etc.

Health Benefits
1. Immunosuppressive effects
In the investigation of the numerous Chinese patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) have benefited from Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F (TwHF), showed that although the results of this meta-analysis should be interpreted with caution and warrant further investigation, TwHF was certainly a valuable and promising immunosuppressive remedy for IgAN, which was in accordance with the accruing evidence from numerous large clinical and experimental studies.(1).

2. Anti rheumatoid arthritis
In the compsrison of the anti rheumatoid arthritis from Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F versus sulfasalazine, reserachers found that similar significant differences between the treatment groups. Significant improvement was demonstrated in all individual components of the ACR response, including the Health Assessment Questionnaire disability score. Interleukin-6 levels rapidly and significantly decreased in the TwHF group. Although not statistically significant, radiographic progression was lower in the TwHF group. The frequency of adverse events was similar in both groups. Limitations: Only 62% and 41% of patients continued receiving TwHF extract and sulfasalazine, respectively, during the 24 weeks of the study(2).

3. Anti inflammatory effects
In the study of trying to produce a transdermal microemulsion drug delivery system (TMDDS) for Tripterygium Wilfordii Hook f. (TWHF) and attempting to solve male reproductive toxicity problem of TWHF, showed that TMDDS for TWHF had stronger transdermal ability than free TWHF, and TWHF microemulsion significantly inhibited the adjuvant-induced arthritis and at the same time, had preferable anti-inflammatory effect with the long-time administration. Various pharmacodynamics parameters proved that TWHF microemulsion can reduce the male reproductive toxicity and hepatotoxicity of rats(3).

4. Anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects
In the investigation of Triptolide (PG-490), a diterpenoid component from Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F., for its anti-Anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, indicated that Thriptolide reversed the TBI-induced decrease in brain levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10. Importantly, triptolide improved neurobehavioral outcomes regarding motor, sensory, reflex and balance function and concluded that triptolide confers neuroprotection against TBI, at least in part, via its anti-inflammatory activity.(4).

5. Psoriasis and other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases
In the examination of the herb Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F. (TwHF) is frequently used to treat autoimmune and/or inflammatory diseases due to its favorable cost-benefit ratio, in China, showed that Triptolide has turned out to be the active substance of TwHF-extracts and has been shown to exert potent anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressive effects in vitro and in vivo. There is increasing evidence for an immunomodulatory and partly immunosuppressive mechanism of action of triptolide. Thus, compounds such as triptolide or triptolide-derivatives may have the potential to be developed as a new class of drugs for these diseases. In this review we summarize the published knowledge regarding clinical use, pharmacokinetics and the possible mode of action of triptolide in the treatment of inflammatory diseases with a particular focus on psoriasis(5).

6. Anti gastric cancer
In the attempt to clarify how triptolide, an active component extracted from the traditional Chinese herbal medicine Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F (TWHF), enhances cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity in gastric cancer SC-M1 cells, found that Apoptosis induced by the combined treatments was accompanied by loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and release of cytochrome c. Triptolide increased the cisplatin-induced activation of caspase-3 and caspase-9 and the downstream cleavage of PARP in SC-M1 cells. Results of these in vitro experiments indicated that triptolide enhanced cytotoxicity in cisplatin-treated SC-M1 cells and that this effect is mediated by apoptosis through a mitochondrial pathway(6).

7. Etc.

Side Effects
1. Overdoses can cause toxicity
2. Prolonged period of use of the herb can decrease bone desity, hair loss and weaked immune system
3. Not not use the herb in newborn, children, or if you are pregnant or breast feeding or if you have geriatric and pediatric diseases or heart, stomach and spleen disorders with consulting with your doctor or related field specialist

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated overtime, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relatively to the height. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered over weight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of American population are either overweight or obese.

You can calculate your BMI index BMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

The Studies of   Weight Loss and Yoga

In the comprehensive search yielded 507 studies; 10 studies with 544 participants (69.6 ± 6.3 yr, 71% female) were included. Large variability in yoga styles and measurement outcomes make it challenging to interpret results across studies, but researchers found that moderate improvements for gait (ES = 0.54, 0.80), balance (ES = 0.25-1.61), upper/lower body flexibility (ES = 0.25, 0.70), lower body strength (ES = 0.51), and weight loss (ES = 0.73, 0.99).Yoga may engender improvements in some components of fitness in older adults. However, more evidence is needed to determine its effectiveness as an alternative exercise to promote fitness in older adults. Further investigation into yoga as an exercise activity for older adults is warranted(1)

                     Diagnosis of secondary Amenorrhea

If you are experience delay of absence of menstruation for more than 3 cycles or 6 months, it is for your benefit to see the doctors right the way.
In the doctor's office, after family and medical history are recorded, your doctor may perform a general physic exam, including the breast and pelvic exams
1. Breast and pelvic exam
The breast and pelvic exam is a routine exam for women with menstrual irregularity as your doctor wants to make sure that your incidence may be caused by presence of substance other than hormonal imbalance.

2. Urinary pregnancy test
This obvious that your doctor wants to rule out the case of pregnancy cause of absence of period.
3. Pelvic Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a medical technological machine used the sound wave to sound waves instead of radiation to generate snapshots or moving pictures of structures inside the body, including the pelvic region to rule the presence of polycystic ovaries. If you has been in the medical office for an ultrasound before, you may already know the procedure and how the test is done. After coating your skin with a lubricant for the purpose of reducing friction from your skin, an ultrasound transducer is placed on your skin, as it moves back and forth, the transducer sends sound waves into your body and picks up the echoes of the sound waves as they bounce off internal organs and tissue that will displace on the computer screen and picture will be sent back to your doctor office after reviewing by the specialist.

4. Computerized tomography (CT)
A CT scan generates a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation, to create a three-dimensional picture of the inside of the body in details. The pictures are viewed by your doctor to see the extent of the tumors abnormalities in your pelvic region.

5. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is one of many advanced technology used to visualize internal structures cross sectional imaging of your body used effectively in providing the better details of the pelvic region and the surrounding areas, including uterus, ovaries are OK.

6. Blood test
a. Thyroid function test
The test is to measure the levels of thyroid stimulating hormone to make sure that amenorrhea is not caused by TSH.
b. Follicle stimulating test
The test is to measure the levels of FSH, if your levels is higher than normal, there may be a chance that you have entered the peri-menopause with symptoms of menstrual irregularity.
c. Male hormone test
The existence of high levels of male hormone in the women blood test may be caused by polycystic ovaries, if you are experience hoax voice and male pattern growth.
d. Progestin challenge test
Progestin is a synthetic progesterone with the structure similar to the natural progesterone in the women body. The aim of the test is to make sure that the delay and absence of period is not caused by low levels of estrogen. you will require to take the medicine for 7-10 days to i8nduce bleeding.

Phytochemicals and antioxidants to prevent Acute infectious thyroiditis
1. Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide)
In the investigation of an antimicrobial sulfur compound newly isolated from heated garlic extract, showed that the compound was CH₂=CH-CH₂-S-S-S-CH₂-CH(NH₂)COOH, 3-(allyltrisulfanyl)-2-aminopropanoic acid, a derivative of cysteine, presumably derived from alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide). This novel compound has comparatively potent anti-yeast activity and rather weak antibacterial activity, similar to other antimicrobial compounds in garlic, according to “3-(allyltrisulfanyl)-2-aminopropanoic acid, a novel nonvolatile water-soluble antimicrobial sulfur compound in heated garlic” by Kang SS, Lim DR, Kyung KH.(33). Others in the evaluation of the in vitro anti-fungal efficacy of the active principle of garlic, pure allicin and polybutylcyanoacrylate (PBCA) nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with allicin.found that that pure allicin has stronger in vitro anti-fungal efficacy to six tested fungi than alliinase and alliin. Moreover, it has improved significantly after pure allicin being wrapped into PBCA NP, which may be due to the NP’s good prolonged release effect and nano-scale dimensions, according to “Anti-fungal efficacy of polybutylcyanoacrylate nanoparticles of allicin and comparison with pure allicin” by Luo DQ, Guo JH, Wang FJ, Jin ZX, Cheng XL, Zhu JC, Peng CQ, Zhang C.(34).

2. Allyl sulfides
According to the article of “GARLICTHE BOUNTIFUL BULB” by Carmia Borek, Ph.D. posted in Life extension magazine, the author indicated that human studies confirm immune stimulation by garlic. Subjects receiving aged garlic extract at 1800 mg a day for three weeks showed a 155.5% increase in natural killer immune cell activity that kills invaders and cancer cells. Other subjects receiving large amounts of fresh garlic of 35g a day, equivalent to 10 cloves, showed an increase of 139.9%. In six weeks, patients with AIDS receiving aged garlic extract showed an enhancement of natural killer cells from a seriously low level to a normal level. Others according to “Allicin from fresh Garlic Nature’s Original Antimicrobial”, The Englishman’s Doctor (Harrington, 1609), the author indicated that the antibacterial properties of crushed garlic have been known for a long time. Various garlic preparations have been shown to exhibit a wide spectrum of antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria including species of Escherichia, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Klebsiella, Proteus, Bacillus, and C!ostridium.

3. Triterpenoids
According to the result of ” Phytochemical screening, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of the crude leaves’ extract from Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam? by Pochapski MT, Fosquiera EC, Esmerino LA, Dos Santos EB, Farago PV, Santos FA, Groppo FC. (Source from Department of Pharmacology, Anesthesiology and Therapeutics, Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas, Piracicaba, SP, Brazil) posted in PubMed, researchers indicated that triterpenes/steroids, alkaloids, anthraquinones, coumarins, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and phenolic acids. Total contents of 345.65, 328.44, and 662.02 mg were respectively obtained for alkaloids, anthraquinones, and phenolic compounds in 100 g of the dry sample. The total antioxidant capacity was 42.94% as compared to ascorbic acid. For antimicrobial studies, no concentration of the SP freeze dried extract was able to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, S. mitis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans in both agar disk and agar well diffusion tests.

4. Phytoene
In the investigation of 26 healthy young volunteers. In a placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study, Lyc-o-Mato (5.7 mg of lycopene, 3.7 mg of phytoene, 2.7 mg of phytofluene, 1 mg of beta-carotene, and 1.8 mg of alpha-tocopherol) or a placebo drink (same taste and flavor, but devoid of active compounds) were given for 26 days, separated by a wash-out period, found that TNF-alpha production by whole blood was 34.4% lower after 26 days of drink consumption, whereas the other parameters were not significantly modified by the treatment. In turn, modest effects of the regular intake of a tomato drink, providing small amounts of carotenoids, were found on the production of inflammatory mediators, such as TNF-alpha, in young healthy volunteers. Future intervention trials in subjects with low carotenoid status and/or compromised immune system will resolve the issue of whether carotenoids modulate immune parameters in humans, according to ” Effect of a tomato-based drink on markers of inflammation, immunomodulation, and oxidative stress” by Riso P, Visioli F, Grande S, Guarnieri S, Gardana C, Simonetti P, Porrini M.(35).

5. Resveratrol
In a study of “Resveratrol, MicroRNAs, Inflammation, and Cancer.” by Tili E, Michaille JJ. (Source from Department of Molecular Virology, Immunology, and Medical Genetics, Ohio State University, Biomedical Research Tower, 460 W 12th Avenue, Columbus, OH 43210, USA.), posted in PubMed, researchers mentioned in abstract that the above microRNAs are thought to link inflammation and cancer. Recently, resveratrol (trans-3,4′,5-trihydroxystilbene), a natural polyphenol with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties, currently at the stage of preclinical studies for human cancer prevention, has been shown to induce the expression of miR-663, a tumor-suppressor and anti-inflammatory microRNA, while downregulating miR-155 and miR-21.

           Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD/ADD)

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD/ADD) also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a chronic disease occurs in certain age and years of a children, defined as a condition with characteristics of co-existence of attentional problems and hyperactivity. It effects about 5% of the all children in the world with boys have 3-4 times higher risk than girl. Over one third of children with ADHD will have continued symptoms existed into their adult life.

                   What to avoid for Children

It is important for parent and the benefits of the child avoided intake of food that promote the brain allergic reaction, impaired social and communication skill, limited interest, etc.
1. Sugar
Sugar may rob the body of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes and increases hyperactivity in ADHD as a result of fluctuation of sugar levels. Researchers found that excessive sugar intake may lead to alterations in mesolimbic dopamine signaling, which could contribute to the symptoms associated with ADHD. We recommend further studies to investigate the possible relationship between chronicsugar intake and ADHD.(28)

2. Artificial ingredients
a. Artificial colors

Food color is any substance added in to the food to preserve its favors or to simulate a natural state of the foods with an aim to make customers to buy them. Although, they have been tested by the government food body to ensure its safety, but unfortunately, it has interfered the neurological processes, such as the behavior, personality and learning ability of children with or without autism if taken in high dose.
It is said that some artificial ingredient such as FD & C Red No. 2 dye have shown to promote cancerous growth. Researcher found that removing the artificial colors from the autistic children diet, improve in attention deficit and hyperactivity behaviors dramatically.
b) Artificial flavors
Artificial flavors are any synthesized chemical added to manufactured foods to change or make its taste better such as banana - isoamyl acetate; cinnamon - ethyl cinnamate; orange - octyl acetate and pineapple - methyl butyrate; pear. It causes nervous tension including mental concentration, behavior, lost of energy and weakened immune response.
It is said that long-term usage can increase your risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and other degenerative conditions to children's central nervous system.

c) Artificial preservatives
Artificial preservatives are a group of chemical substances, such as BHT, nitrates, sulfites, sulfur dioxide, BHA, etc. added to food, sprayed on the outside of food, or added to certain medications with the purpose of preventing food from spoiling or discoloring. It causes allergic reactions in children, resulting in skin rashes or facial swelling and worsening asthma.

d) Artificial Addictive
Artificial addictive is defined as substances, adding to foods from the manufacture with the purpose of preservation, coloring, texture and flavor. Studies found that artificial additive can causes several types of cancer and tumor. Many of them have negative impacts in children with ADHD.
i) Olestra
Olestra is a fat substitute used in crackers and potato chips. It is type of additive can not be absorbed by the digestive system, leading to diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal cramps.
ii) Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
MSG is used as a flavor enhancer in many cooking and preservative foods. It is said that MSG can cause sensitive neurons to die. leading to headache, nausea or vomiting.

e) Artificial sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners is a synthesis sugar substituted substance. It has been used increasingly in replacing natural sugar in a wide range of products traditionally containing sugar. Studies found that artificial sweetener may increase risk of bladder and brain cancers.
i) Sucralose
It is 600 times as sweet as sugar and has been used in beverages, frozen desserts, chewing gum, baked goods, etc. and belongs to a class of chemicals called organochlorides. Some of them are considered toxic to our health.
ii) Lead acetate
It is an artificial sugar substitute made from lead, it causes lead accumulated in the body, leading to nervous symptoms.
iii) Aspartame
It is 200 times as sweet as sugar and can be used as a tabletop sweetener, frozen desserts, gelatins, etc. Researchers found that aspartame may increase the risk of brain damage and cancer.(26)

3. Trans Fat
Trans fat has been proven to inhibit the function of nerve function as Diets high infat, especially trans and saturated fats, adversely affect cognition, while those high in fruits, vegetables, cereals, and fish are associated with better cognitivefunction and lower risk of dementia(29). trans fat is the hydrogenated oil found in many commercial mayonnaise, margarine, and peanut butter etc. and can cause cholesterol building up in the arteries, leading to less blood circulation to the central nervous system.

4. Yeast extract
It is also known as processed yeast products and has been used as food additives or flavourings under the name of monosodium glutamate (MSG). It contains glutamic acid which is classified as exitotoxins, and can cause brain damage in some studies.

5. Casein
Casein is a protein found in milk and foods containing milk, such as cheese, butter, yogurt, etc. Studies found besides promoting cancer, it also increases the risk of bad cholesterol building up in the arteries, leading to heart diseases and stroke. Casein after intake can also be broken down to casomorphins, an chemical agent which is known to interfere with the function of neurotransmitter in transmitting information and decrease the immune response to foreign bacteria and virus invasion.

6. Non organic foods
Non organic foods may contain
i) Pesticides & Herbicides
Pesticides & Herbicides is highly toxic. Because of their value of increasing the production of foods and prevent insect eating away the profits of the growers, it have been widely uses in non organic farming. Intake of non organic foods may weakened the immune system as well as interfering the liver function in toxic elimination, leading to central nervous tension and exhibiting the symptoms of ADHD.
ii) Contaminated Sewage Sludge
The increasing uses of contaminated sewage sludge containing human waste, industrial waste and toxic chemicals as a fertilizer, causes crop contamination, leading to major chronic health problem, including increasing the severity of the nervous symptoms for children with ADHD.
iii) Hormones & Antibiotics
Animal fed with fed antibiotics, hormones, ground up remains of other animals causes hormone imbalance in our body, leading central nervous disorder, increasing the risk of irregular cell growth, and damaging the balance of beneficial bacteria in the intestines.

7. Refine products
Refined products with little fiber release sugar in the blood stream quickly, causing the responses of pancreas to produce high level of insulin to neutralize it in a short period of time, that interferes with the normal function of central nervous system in controlling the concentration, focus and behaviour for children with ADHD.

                                 Dietary Minerals

Dietary Minerals are the group of minerals which is essential for our body to sustain normal functions and physical health.

                                      Potassium

In General, potassium is a very essential mineral to the human body for maintaining to build proteins and muscle, break down carbohydrates, maintain normal body growth and normal heart electricity, etc.

                                        The Effect on Leptospirosis

The Normal serum potassium is 3.5 to 5.5 mEq/L. The total body potassium is lower in females and in older patients, serum potassium concentration is independent of sex and age.
Leptospirosis is disease caused by bacteria as a result of contact with water, soil or food contaminated by urine from infected animals.

The benefits

Patient infected by bacteria cause of Leptospirosisis susceptible to hypokalemic acute renal failure characterized with low level of serum of potassium and sodium may be associated to increased risk of mortality. In the study to measure the levels of serum potassium and serum creatinine andduration of symptoms at admission, showed the death rate increased with serum potassium: 11.1% in the hypoK, 14.7% in the normoK and 47.1% in the hyperK group (p = 0.002). the result suggested that hypoK is an positive and independent risk correlated with the risk of in-hospital death and hyperK are directly associated to increase risk of mortality in patient with Leptospirosis. Other in the study of the same also indicated that older age was also strongly and independently associated with higher risk of death.
