Lian Xin or Lian Zi Xin (Plumula Nelumbinis Nuciferae)

Lian Xin or Lian Zi Xin is also known as Lotus plumule. The bitter and cold herb has been used in TCM to treat high fever, sweating, dry mouth and thirst, insomnia, spermatorrhea and hypertension, etc. as it clears heat and the Heart, stops bleeding, preserves the Essence, etc., by enhancing the functions of heart, lung and kidney channels.

Ingredients
1. Liensinine
2. Isoliensinine
3. Neferine
4. Nuciferine
5. Pronuciferine
6. Lotoflavin
7. Methyl-corypalline
8. Higenamine
9. Flavonoid
10 Hyperin
11. Butin
12. Etc.

Health Benefits
1. Acute systemic inflammation
In the determination of whether lotus plumule supplementation alleviates acute systemic inflammation in vivo, of the BALB/c mice for 3 weeks, suggest that low dose and 3-week supplementation of lotus plumule might alleviate acute systemic inflammation in vivo via decreasing the visceral organ inflammation and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 from splenocytes. These results are valuable for developing future nutraceuticals and anti-inflammatory agents from traditional medicinal foods(1).

2. Chronic inflammatory conditions
In the examination of the effects of foods traditionally regarded as ‘heating’ such as litchi, longan, or dried longan, etc. or ‘cooling’ such as hemum flower, bitter gourd, and lotus seed plumule, etc. on the production of PGE(2), a well-known proinflammatory mediator, found that water-soluble extracts of foods traditionally regarded as ‘heating’ enhanced basal PGE(2) production, while those from ‘cooling’ foods significantly inhibited LPS-induced PGE(2) production by the macrophage cell line. This subject merits further study to determine whether appropriate food selection may help patients suffering from chronic inflammatory conditions(2).

3. Etc,.

Side Effects
1. Do not use the herb in case of spleen deficiency
2. Do not use  Lian Xin in newborn, children or if you are pregnant or
breast feeding with out approval first with the related field specialist

                   Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is defined as a condition of irreversible scarring liver as a result of liver tissue by fibrosis due to final phase of chronic liver diseases of that can lead to poor function of the liver and liver failure. According to the statistics, Number of discharges with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis as the first-listed diagnosis: 101,000 in 2009 and Deaths per 100,000 population: 10.3 in 2010(a). Hepatitis B infection cause of the disease is very prevalent in South-East Asia.

The Conditions may be affected by Cirrhosis

1. Pregnancy
As the treatment of cirrhosis improves, pregnancy in patients with cirrhosis is likely to become more common. Although maternal and fetal mortality is expected to similarly improve, pregnant patients with cirrhosis face unique risks, including higher rates of spontaneous abortion and prematurity and a potential for life-threatening variceal hemorrhage, hepatic decompensation, splenic artery aneurysm rupture, and postpartum hemorrhage(40).

2. Malnutrition
In the study to assess of 212 hospitalized patients with liver cirrhosis who were followed clinically for 2 y or until death. Body fat and evaluate muscle mass by triceps skinfold thickness (TSF) and midarm muscle circumference (MAMC), respectively, showed that thirty-four percent of patients had severe malnutrition as determined by MAMC and/or TSF below the 5th percentile and 20% had moderate malnutrition (MAMC and/or TSF < 10th percentile). Twenty-six percent of patients were overnourished (MAMC and/or TSF > 75th percentile). Severely and moderately malnourished patients had lower survival rates than normal and overnourished patients(41).

3. Obese and diabetic individuals
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in the Western world and its incidence is increasing rapidly. According to the study by Indiana University School of Medicine, indicated that NAFLD is a spectrum ranging from simple steatosis, which is relatively benign hepatically, to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to cirrhosis. Obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia are the most important risk factors for NAFLD. Due to heavy enrichment with metabolic risk factors, individuals with NAFLD are at significantly higher risk for cardiovascular disease. Individuals with NAFLD have higher incidence of type 2 diabetes(42).

There existed significant differences among the different processed products, according to “[Effects of processing on antioxidation of Radix et Rhizoma Rhei and Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati].[Article in Chinese]” by Kong LD, Yang C, Qiu X.(51). Other in the investigation of twenty traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) for their antimicrobial activity against four common oral bacteria, found that thirteen TCMs demonstrated antimicrobial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis, including Cortex magnoliae officinalis, Cortex phellodendri, Flos caryophylli, Flos lonicerae japonicae, Fructus armeniaca mume, Fructus forsythiae suspensae, Herba cum radice violae yedoensitis, Herba menthae haplocalycis, Pericarpium granati, Radix et rhizoma rhei, Radix gentianae, Ramulus cinnamomi cassia and Rhizoma cimicifugae. Cortex phellodendri showed antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans, while Radix et rhizoma rhei was effective against Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus sanguis. Fructus armeniaca mume had inhibitory effects against Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis in vitro, according to “Antimicrobial activity of Chinese medicine herbs against common bacteria in oral biofilm. A pilot study” by Wong RW, Hägg U, Samaranayake L, Yuen MK, Seneviratne CJ, Kao R.(52).

4. Long Kui
In the study to evaluate the Solanum nigrum fruit extract (SNFEt) for its antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic activity against ethanol-induced toxicity in rats, in the lipid profiles, the levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoproteins (LDL), very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), free fatty acids (FFA), and phospholipids were significantly elevated in the ethanol-induced group, whereas, the high density lipoproteins (HDL) were found to be reduced in the plasma, and the phospholipid levels were significantly decreased in the tissues. Supplementation of SNFEt improved the antioxidant status by decreasing the levels of TBARS and altering the lipid profiles to near normal(53). Other in the study to search for anti-HCV plants from different areas of Pakistan, found that Methanol and chloroform extracts of Solanum nigrum (SN) seeds exhibited 37% and more than 50% inhibition of HCV respectively at non toxic concentration. Moreover, antiviral effect of SN seeds extract was also analyzed against HCV NS3 protease by transfecting HCV NS3 protease plasmid into liver cells(54).

6. Emotional stress
Emotional stress reduces endorphin and depresses the hormonal secretion in our body resulting in absence of menstruation.

7. Obesity
Excessive fat accumulation of obese women causes interfering with normal process of ovulation as we mentioned in 5.

8. Premature ovarian failure
Premature ovarian failure caused by sudden decreasing of levels of estrogen that is needed for starting a menstrual cycle which results in early menopause.

9. Polysystic ovarian syndrome
Polysytic ovarian syndrome is the most common cause of secondary amenorrhea. Women with this problem do not ovulate resulting in excessive levels of testosterone and bad estrogen.

10. Weakened liver function
Liver malfunction results in an inability of the liver to detoxify, causing excessive high levels of bad estrogen interfering with normal menstrual cycle.
