Scientists may have found a whole food with the potential to kill cancer cells before they can cause some serious effect on the human body, some studies suggested.
Cancer is the group of diseases characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in some tissue and organs, due to the alternation of cell DNA.
At the advanced stage, most invasive cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of blood and fluid.
The causes of cancer are unknown, researchers do not why people with the same health conditions and family history, some are susceptible to the onset of the diseases while others do not.
However, they do know that smoking, radiation, viruses, cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation and a lack of exercise are most risk factors associated to the early onset of cancers.
Furthermore, genes mutation such as BRCA1 and 2 inherited from the parents are one of the major risk factors that cause cancers.
Long-term excessive alcohol drinking is associated with a higher risk of liver cancer.
According to the World Cancer Research Fund, Eating 'fast foods' (such as chips and fried chicken) or other processed foods that are high in fat and sugar (like chocolate, crisps, and biscuits) can make you gain weight, and there is strong evidence that being overweight or obese is a cause of 12 types of cancer. And diets that are high in plant foods – such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and beans – can help you stay a healthy weight, and may also protect against certain cancers.
Moreover, Dr. Weiderpass E, in the study of "Lifestyle and cancer risk" wrote. "The main behavioral and environmental risk factors for cancer mortality in the world are related to diet and physical inactivity, use of addictive substances, sexual, and reproductive health, exposure to air pollution and use of contaminated needles".
Asparagus is a flowering plant belonging to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia.
Asparagus has been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.
Its chemical constituents include essential oils, asparagine, arginine, tyrosine, flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin, and rutin), resin, and tannin.
In the study of saponins from old stems of asparagus (SSA) potential inhibitory activity on tumor growth and metastasis conducted by the East China Normal University on the breast, colon and pancreatic cancer cell lines, researchers found that
* Injection of saponins displays a significant effect in the inhibition of all tested cancer cell lines in a concentration-dependent manner, with half-maximum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 809.42 to 1829.96 µg mL(-1).
* At the concentration of 400 µg mL(-1), SSA is more functional in blocking cell migration and invasion as compared with its cytotoxic effect.
* Furthermore, SSA markedly increased the activities of Cdc42, a protein with function involved in the regulation of the cell cycle. and Rac1 with function in stimulating the cytotoxicity activity and decreased the activity of RhoA that is associated with cytoskeleton regulation, in cancer cells.
These results suggested that SSA increased the levels and activities of reactive oxygen species in exerting cytotoxicity against the proliferation and migration of cancer cells.
Dr.Wang J, the lead scientist at the final report, said, "SSA inhibits tumor cell motility through modulating the Rho GTPase signaling pathway (in the regulation of diverse cellular functions), suggesting a promising use of SSA as a supplement in healthcare foods and natural drugs for cancer prevention and treatment".
Moreover, in the examine the function of a series of Sarsapogenin and Diosgenin derived steroidal constituents (1-12), isolated from Solanum xanthocarpum and Asparagus racemosus against cancers, researchers showed that the isolated compounds exert their ability to induce cell death and apoptosis of colon carcinoma cells.
The carbohydrate moieties linked to the steroid backbones process the strong influence in the induction of cytotoxic activity and cell death mode (apoptosis or necrosis).
Taken all together, asparagus containing high amounts of saponins and newly Sarsapogenin and Diosgenin derived steroidal constituents may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of cancers.

White Button Mushroom inhibits the Onset of Prostate cancer
White button mushroom may be considered a functional food in inhibiting the early onset of prostate cancer, some scientist found.
Prostate cancer is cancer originated from the inner lining of the prostate gland caused by irregular prostate cell growth. Prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer. However, they can be deadly in the advanced stage by traveling a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.
Most prostate cancers are found in the yearly annual physical exam, designed for the male at a higher risk of prostate cancer.
The exact causes of prostate cancer are unknown. However, the most common risk factor associated with the onset of the disease is genetic mutation inherited from the parents. mutation of BRCA1 and BRCA2 reserves the function of tumor suppressor genes which normally repair mistakes in a cell's DNA to allow DNA mutation of the prostate cells.
Other risk factors also include age, family history, ethnicity and longterm exposure to organ agents.
Unhealthy diet and lifestyle are also the most common preventable risk factors for the onset of the disease.
Dr. Sandaly O. S. Pacheco,, the lead author in the study "Food Habits, Lifestyle Factors, and Risk of Prostate Cancer in Central Argentina: A Case-Control Study Involving Self-Motivated Health Behavior Modifications after Diagnosis" wrote, "(Patients diagnosed with prostate cancer have) a greater mean consumption of meats and fats and lower intakes of fruits, green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains than the controls (all p < 0.001)".
Therefore, reducing the intake of meats and fats, and actively engaging in the dietary modifications with increased consumption of fish, fruits (including red fruits in prostate cancer), cruciferous vegetables, legumes, nuts, and black tea may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
Mushroom is a standard name of white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source.
It is a genus A. Muscaria and belonging to the family Amanitaceae and has been recultivated in many cultures all over the world for foods and health benefits.
Chemical constituents
Astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil, and D-mannitol.
In the evaluate the effects of white button mushroom extract and its major component, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on prostate cancer cell lines in vitro and mushroom extract in vivo, researchers found that* Injection of mushroom effectively inhibits cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner and induces apoptosis of the tested cell lines within 72 h of treatment.
* Application of CLA inhibits proliferation in the prostate cancer cell lines in vitro.
* DU145 and PC3 prostate tumor size and tumor cell proliferation are decreased in nude mice treated with mushroom extract, whereas tumor cell apoptosis was increased compared to pair-fed controls.* Application of mushroom in tested mice demonstrated the significant changes in the tumor gene expression compared to controls, according to microarray analysis.
Dr. Adams LS the lead author said, "..., the anticancer potential of phytochemicals in mushroom extract both in vitro and in vivo and supports the recommendation of white button mushroom as a dietary component that may aid in the prevention of prostate cancer in men".
Furthermore, in the study to examine whether Mushrooms, an excellent source of dietary vitamin D2 in the risk of prostate cancer, researchers launched a nested case-control study based on a 13-year follow-up of about 19,000 middle-aged men who attended the first screening visit within the Helsinki Heart Study and free of clinically verified prostate cancer at baseline.
According to record linkage with the files of the Finnish Cancer Registry, 149 prostate cancer cases were identified in the cohort.
After the assessment, researchers found that
* Prostate cancer risk, analyzed by quartiles of the 25-VD levels, was inversely related to 25-VD. In other words, men with a 25-VD concentration below the median are associated with the risk of prostate cancer compared to men with the 25-VD level above the median.
* The prostate cancer risk was highest among younger men (<52 years) at entry and low serum 25-VD (OR 3.1 nonadjusted and 3.5 adjusted).
* The mean age at diagnosis of the patients with a 25-VD concentration above the median was 1.8 years higher than that of patients with vitamin D below the median (63.1 vs 61.3 years).
These results strongly suggested that low levels of plasma 25-VD concentration are a prevalent risk factor of the onset of prostate cancer. In other words, increased consumption of mushroom can increase and maintain blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in a healthy range, thus reducing the risk of prostate cancer, regardless of age group.

Garlic, The Kitchen Spice in the Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension, Scientists Recommend
Scientists may have found a common kitchen spice with potential in reducing high blood pressure quickly without including any side effects, some studies endorsed.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.
High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If it stays high over time it can damage the body in many ways.
The causes of hypertension are unknown. However, researchers do know that acute hypertension is induced by daily stress.
Certain risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyle choices, physical inactivity unhealthy diet with high in saturated and trans fat, refined products, processed food, high sugar, and salt intake,...... over time cause your blood pressure to spice-up chronically.
Lifestyle choices can also lead to overweight or obese, the risk factors for the early onset of hypertension.
According to the statistic, in the US, over 75 million adults or 32% have high blood pressure.
In other words, 1 in every 3 American adults has the syndrome. Sadly 44% of the mentioned adults with high blood pressure are not under control.
Uncontrol high blood pressure has long been known as a major risk factor for the development of heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States.
Blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects such as gastrointestinal discomforts, tiredness, weakness, headache.
Some patients who are taking the hypertensive medicine over the prolonged periods of time may experience symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
In severe cases, intake of antihypertensive drugs for a long term can cause dermatitis, arthritis and anemia and lupus erythematosus-like syndrome, according to the article "Adverse Effects of Antihypertensive Drugs" written by Dr. DWARD D. FREIS, M.D.
If you are currently taking any anti-high blood pressure medications, please make you that you know all the side effects.
Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia.
The kitchen spice has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotic, etc.
In adult men and women, participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2006-2008 to 2012-2014), intake of garlic is associated to reduce the risk of hypertension by up 26%.
In hypertension of 80-90% patients with excess glucocorticoid level, allicin found in garlic attenuated dexamethasone-induced anorexia and loss of total body weight.
A randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial conducted on 56 CVD patients, aged 25 - 75 years old also suggested treatment with garlic-based drugs can be effective for controlling BP in CVD patients and has no interaction with other drugs that CAD patients take, after 3 months of the administration.
Dr. Takashima M the lead author at the Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd said, " aged garlic extract (AGE) is effective in reducing the blood pressure of hypertensive patients,......AGE-induced the concentration-dependent vasorelaxation of isolated rat aortic rings that had been precontracted with norepinephrine"
In fact, The traditional Chinese medicine, food therapy, and hypertension control, all recommended that garlic is of the food to be used for hypertension control, according to a statistical analysis of antihypertensive foods recommended in 20 books on the application of food therapy for hypertension control.
If you can control your diet, make changes to lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, you could do just fine without the drugs,
Taking all together, garlic may be used as preventive and controlling effects for patients with or without high blood pressure. Some researchers insisted that garlic anti hypertension effect may result from its anticoagulant property.

The Potent Functional Beverage Which Protects Your Lung Against The Onset of Pneumonia, Medline Studies Find
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in inhibiting the onset of pneumonia, some scientists suggested.
Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. The disease may be contagious, as it can spread from person to person, depending to types infectious pathogens.
However, pneumonia induced by fungal passed from the environment to human is not contagious from person to person.
Bacteria Gram-positive cocci. Streptococcus pneumonia is most causes of community-acquired pneumonia in adults and Haemophilus influenza is the second most common cause of bacterial pneumonia.
Additionally, people who have a weakened immune system, are hospitalized or being on a ventilator. and smoking is most likely to be infected the disease.
Certain chronic medical condition including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, structural lung disease, and heart disease are found to associate with an increased risk of pneumonia.
The common symptoms of include chest pain when you breathe or a cough, persistent coughing, fatigue. fever, sweating and shaking chills. If you over the age of 50, you may also have the symptoms of confusion or changes in mental awareness'
According to the statistic, the disease affects over approximately 450 million people a year, in all parts of the world.
Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
In the investigation of green tea bioactive polyphenol catechins activity in the inhibition of infectious agents, researchers at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine launched a population-based cohort study, with follow-up from 1995 to 2006, using the database of National Health Insurance beneficiaries in Japan (19,079 men and 21,493 women aged 40-79 y).
Participants with missing reports of green tea consumption and a history of cancer, myocardial infarction, stroke, and extreme daily energy intake at baseline were excluded.
The comparison of green tea intake and the risk of death in patients with inflammatory pneumonia was analyzed according to the Cox proportional hazards regression analysis.
According to the review, after 12 years of follow up, researchers found that participants who drink <1, 1-2 cups/d, 3-4 and > or =5 cups/d expressed a reduced risk of the hazard of 1, 0.59, 0.55, 0.53, respectively.
These results indicated that green tea intake was associated with the significantly lower risk of death in patients with pneumonia.
Also, the results of the efficacy of green tea increased substantially and linearly to numbers of cup consumed per day.
Further analysis to confirm the inhibitory effects of tea polyphenols on Chlamydia trachomatis and C. pneumonia. In vitro, researchers at the Saitama Medical School, Iruma conducted an experiment of injection of tea polyphenols, Polyphenon 70S into Chlamydial strains including C. trachomatis D/UW-3/Cx and L(2)/434/Bu, and C. pneumonia AR-39 and AC-43 strains cultivated in cells and HL cells.
At the final phase of the experiment, researchers indicated that in the pre-inoculation method, application of Polyphenon 70S Completely inhibits both straits without inducing any adverse effects.
However, in the post-inoculation method, injection of Polyphenon 70S at a dose of at 0.5 mg/ml demonstrated no inclusive effect against of C. trachomatis but induced toxicity to HeLa229 cells and HL cells at a concentration of 0.25 mg/ml.
Additional differentiation concluded that application of tea polyphenols may be considered as a potential topical usage.
Interestingly, in the study to clarify the in vitro effect of EGCG on C. pneumonia mediated IgE responses by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in asthma by using PBMC from subjects with asthma and non-asthmatic controls incubated with C. pneumonia and cultured for 10 days ±EGCG (0.5, 5.0, 50 ng/mL), with IgE levels of PBMC from non-asthmatics of <2.0 ng/mL) at baseline scientists showed that application of EGCG (0.5-50 ng/mL) displays a significant inhibitory effect of PBMC from the asthma patient, by suppressing the IgE production in a dose-dependent manner (10-30%), compared to no EGCG treatment group.
More importantly, injection of green tea EGCG exerted insignificant effect against PBMC from non-asthmatics incubated with C. pneumoniae as the IgE levels are undetectable (<2.0 ng/mL).
These results suggest that green tea EGCG demonstrated a cell protective activity against bacterial invasion through its cytotoxicity without causing harm to nearby healthy cells.
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered as functional food in amelioration of the risk and treatment of pneumonia. Intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care, as acute liver toxicity was reported in numbers of cases.
However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the beverage during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of green tea anti-pneumonia possibilities.

Yoga Intervention Alleviates Symptoms By Improving Lung Functions of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Yoga may be used as an integrated form of exercise in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a randomized controlled study suggested.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)) is the third leading cause of death in the United State, inducing symptoms of breathlessness and fatigue and making physical activity more challenging.
COPD is a chronic condition caused by lung inflammation that obstructs the airflow from the lungs.
Most common symptoms of COPD are breathing difficulty, cough, mucus (sputum) production,.... and wheezing.
According to the statistic, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects about 32 million persons in the United States.
Conventional treatment of COPD focuses on the management to improve patients' functional status and quality of life by preserving remained lung function, according to Medscape
Yoga, the ancient practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement,.... and gesture.....
The technique is well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
In a randomized trial with two study arms (yoga and control) of total of 81 coal miners enrolled, ranging from 36 to 60 years with stage II and III stable COPD, assigned either on conventional treatment or combination of conventional care with yoga program for 12 weeks, after review the returned questionnaire, researchers found that
* Compared to other groups, yoga group displays strong improvements of COPD on all scales.
*Also, Compared to the conventional treatment group, yoga group expresses significantly positive effects in both physical and mental health status.
Dr. Ranjita R, the led researchers said, "Yoga seems to be a safe, feasible, and effective treatment for patients with COPD".
More profoundly, in the evaluated 43 patients with symptomatic, moderate-to-severe COPD assigned to the 12 weeks of pranayama plus education versus education alone taught by 2 yoga professionals, researchers indicated the following results
* Yoga group shows a strong performance in the 6-min walk distance (6MWD), compared to education the only group.
* Yoga also displays small improvements in inspiratory capacity and air trapping.
Researchers, after adjusting to other risk factors said, "Both groups had significant improvements in various measures of symptoms, but no overall differences in respiratory system impedance or markers of oxidative stress or systemic inflammation".
Truly, yoga posture and breathing practices improve blood circulation to the lung and muscle of the organ function, thus increasing the air flow to the lung in the absorption of volumes of oxygen for the body needs.
With the additional supply of oxygen to the blood, patients with COPD not only can increase walking distance but also can perform other physical activity. Thus, enhancing the quality of life, including mental health.
In other words, yoga intervention significantly enhances inspiratory capacity and air trapping and improves the central nervous system in the regulation of certain hormones which have the functions in the stimulation of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory expressions.
The efficacy of yoga mentioned on the above is also supported by the evaluated the effects of yoga training on the quality of life (QOL) and the parameters of lung function in patients with COPD of 33 patients with COPD satisfied with study criteria selected, after attending yoga exercises including breathing exercises, meditation, and yoga postures for 1 hour, thrice a week for 6 weeks by a certified yoga therapists.
Compared to conventional treatment
* Yoga intervention showed an impressive improvement of vital capacity (95% CI 2.53-7.65), maximal inspiratory pressure, and maximal expiratory pressure, observed for the St. George Respiratory Questionnaire.
* The intervention also expressed short-term benefits in enhancing QOL and lung function
Taking all together, yoga may be used as a secondary form of exercise combined with standard therapy for ameliorated symptoms and treatment for COPD patients.

The Beverages That Block and Reverse the Onset of Dyspepsia, Naturally, Researchers Reveal
Black and green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect on the prevention of dyspepsia, some scientists suggested.
Dyspepsia is a digestive condition of ingestion.
The exact causes of dyspepsia are unknown. However, researchers suggested that patients with the onset of a stomach ulcer or acid reflux disease are most susceptible to the condition.
Certain medication such as aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antibiotics (metronidazole, macrolides) and diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome is associated with an increased risk of dyspepsia.
Some researchers also suggested that unhealthy choice of lifestyle such as smoking, excessive alcohol drinking also have a strong impact on the onset of the disease.
Dr. Umapati C. Baragi, the lead scientist in the study of diet and lifestyle in the etiopathogenesis of Urdhwaga Amlapitta (non-ulcer dyspepsia) said, "dietary patterns, lifestyle choices, and physical activities play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of Urdhwaga Amlapitta, and it is important for patients to have access to diet and lifestyle modifications. Currently, research in this area is minimal"
Symptoms of dyspepsia include pain in the chest, stomach burning pain, bloating, heartburn, upset stomach,.... digestive discomforts.
If you experience the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Black tea is a beverage with more oxidization, compared to other teas such as oolong, green, and white teas.
In the investigation of aqueous extract (BTE) and thearubigins isolated from green tea effects in sildenafnil-induced delay in gastric emptying (GE) and small intestinal transit (SIT) in total of 160 mice, randomly assigned to 20 groups with 8 in each group, treated by different or combination of doses of BTE, thearubigins (TRs), sildenafil (SLD), metoclopramide, L-NAME (hydrochloride) and black tea extract researchers found that pretreatment of certain doses of green tea aqueous extract (BTE) and thearubigins significantly reverse motility-delaying effects caused by injection of sildenafnil.
Further differentiation also indicated that additional injection of black tea at 3% and 4.5% increases function of thearubigins (50 and 60 mg/kg) dose-dependently in promoted dyspepsia in mice in compared to the insignificant effect of the combination of BTE at 6% and thearubigins 70 mg/kg.
Moreover, combination of metoclopramide, a medicine used mainly for treatment of ingestion in people with delayed stomach emptying, BTE 4.5%, thearubigins 60 or nω -Nitro-l-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (l-NAME) with sildenafil (5 mg/kg) reversed its motility-delaying effects,
This improvement of dyspepsia was partially blocked by application of l-NAME through reducing function nitric oxide and improving gastrointestinal smooth muscle mobility by observation of the pretreatment of l-NAME followed by application of BTE alone or combination of thearubigins 60, BTE + sildenafil, and thearubigins + sildenafil.
Dr. Murad HA, the lead author, after taking into account confounders said, "BTE 4.5% or TRs 60 mg/kg solution could be considered a reliever therapy for the sildenafil-induced dyspepsia".
Additional investigate the role of hot water extract of black tea [Camellia sinensis (L) in normalizing the changes in the intestinal transit and gastric emptying induced by various ulcerogenic agents in experimental rats found that application of black tea extract significant promotes the intestinal transit and gastric emptying caused by glutathione (GSH) depleting agents, diethyl maleate (DEM) in decreased mucosal content in aid of digestion, indoacetamide (IDA) in reduced stomach acid secretion, gastritis, and mucus thickness on gastric transfer and N-ethyl maleimide (NEM) with function of in significantly reduced the mucosal SH levels and the lesions.
Oral administration of black tea extract (BTE) at 20 ml/kg of a 10% solution once a day for 7 days also expressed a significantly increased the intestinal transit and gastric emptying similarly to those of conventional succimer (60 mg/kg, i.g.), the standard sulfhydryl containing an antiulcer agent
through the restoration of antioxidant of serum GSH level.
However, such increase of intestinal transit induced by BTE was reversed both by N-omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (25 mg/kg, i.p.) and N-omega-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA) (25 mg/kg, i.p.), in reduced levels of NO in the aided stomach in the production of gastric acid for digestive function.
Dr. Maity S, the lead author said, "restoration of intestinal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity was found to be associated with BTE treatment" and "These results provide evidence that nitric oxide may play a role in BTE-mediated movement of intestinal motility changes and gastric emptying induced by DEM, IDA, and NEM".
Taken together, black tea with plenty phytochemicals may be considered as functional food in reducing risk and treatment of dyspepsia.
However, intake of tea supplement should be taken with exceptional care to prevent acute liver toxicity.

Beetroot and Its Bioactive Chemical Ingredient Which Kill Cancer Cells Compared to Chemo Drug Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) with No Side Effects, Scientists Reveal
Scientists may have found a vegetable which processes a potency in killing cancer cells before spreading, some studies suggested.
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body.
At the advanced stage, the invasive cancer cell can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs via lymph or/and blood.
According to the statistic provided by the UK Cancers research, in 2012, an estimated 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred worldwide.
Sadly, more than 4 in ten cancers occurring worldwide are in countries at a low or medium level of Human Development Index (HDI).
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistic composite index of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, according to the definition.
In 2018, over 1,7 millions of new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the US, and approximately over 600,000 patients will die from the diseases.
The four most common types of cancer, occurring worldwide are lung, female breast, bowel and prostate cancer.
Early diagnosis as always is the best way to improve survival rate. Depending on types of cancer, most cancers have a 100% 5 years survival rate, if they are diagnosed at the stage of 0 and 1.
Beet is best known as the beetroot or garden beet and belong to the amaranth family. It is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

Besides the major chemical constituents betalains and phenolics, beetroot also contains the lesser amount of isobetanin, probetanin, neobetanin, indicaxanthin, vulgaxanthins, etc.
In the study to reaffirm the effect of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) extract (B), approved by Food and Drug Administration and European Union as red food color E162, in reducing multi-organ tumor formations in various animal models when administered in drinking water, researchers at the Howard University launched an investigation to examine whether a long-term daily exposure to low doses of B through diet would be safe and sufficient to produce cancer chemopreventive effect in humans.
Compared to the conventional chemo drugs doxorubicin (D) with different concentrations of range from 0.29-290 μg/ml in several human cancer cell lines, researchers found that
* Application of Red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) extract (B exerts a synergistic antiproliferative activity with against pancreatic (PaCa), breast (MCF-7) and prostate (PC-3) tumor cells of human origin.
* Red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) extract (B) is considered safe for human use with no known toxicity.
* Used combined with D demonstrates an overall positive reduction of concentration od D with the same cytotoxicity profile in the three human cancer cells. In other words, the synergistic cytotoxicity was best when the B:D ratio of 1:5 was used in PaCa cells at IC50, IC75, and IC90 dose levels and in MCF-7 cells at an IC90 dose level.
These results suggested that red beetroot extract used combined with doxorubicin may process a potency in treating human cancers.
Additionally, in the further testing of the anti-cancer effect of the red beetroot extract with the anticancer drug, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) in the androgen-independent human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and in the well-established estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), researchers showed that
* Both doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibit a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect in the two tested cancer cell lines.
* The cytotoxicity of the beetroot extract is significantly lower, compared to doxorubicin. Application of beetroot continues to decrease the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) when tested at the concentration of 29 µg/ml in compared to doxorubicin completely inhibited the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days at the same concentration.
These results indicated lesser effects of the beetroot extract in inducing cytotoxicity, compared to doxorubicin (8.6% vs. 100%, respectively, at 29 µg/ml concentration of each, three-day test period).
Further analysis of the results, researchers found that the anticancer activity may be attributed to its bioactive compound betanin, the major betacyanin constituent.
The findings suggested that beetroot and its extract with abundant phytochemicals may be considered a functional food used alone or combined with chemo drugs for the treatment of cancers without inducing any side effects.
However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the beer root extract during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of its anti-cancer possibilities.
