Herbal Cat's claw, The Anti Cancers Chemotherapeutic Remedy

Cat's claw found in the tropical jungles of South and Central America may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of the early onset of irregular cell growth, some scientists suggested.

Cancers are a class of chronic diseases associated with cell growth in the tissue and organs. At the advanced stage, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy cells and tissues.

There are many types of cancer, depending on the location where cancer begins.

As of today, researchers do not know what are the exact cause of cancers. however many researchers believe, exposure to the environmental toxins, genetic mutation, and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the diseases.

Genetic mutation od BRCA1 and BRCA2 are associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and alternation of gene PTEN.that suppress the growth of tumors also increase the risk of cancers.
Dr. N Parsa in the study "Environmental Factors Inducing Human Cancers" wrote, "(Environment toxins cause) genetic mutations that would eventually alter the normal pathway of cellular proliferation and differentiation. Genetic mutations in four groups of genes; (Oncogenes, Tumor suppressor genes, Apoptosis genes, and DNA repair genes) play a vital role in altering the normal cell division" and " Inhibition of carcinogenic exposures wherever possible should be the goal of cancer prevention programs to reduce exposures from all environmental carcinogens".

The statement illustrated that environmentally induced genetic alternation at the cellular levels can initiate the early onset of cancer.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund UK What you eat can have a big impact on your risk of developing cancer. eating too much fat and sugar and less of fruits and vegetables are the most prevalent risk factors of cancers.

Truly, "Cancer is a Preventable Disease that Requires Major Lifestyle Changes", Dr. Preetha Anand, the lead scientist in the medical literature said, "Only 5–10% of all cancer cases can be attributed to genetic defects, whereas the remaining 90–95% have their roots in the environment and lifestyle" and "cancer prevention requires smoking cessation, increased ingestion of fruits and vegetables, moderate use of alcohol, caloric restriction, exercise, avoidance of direct exposure to sunlight, minimal meat consumption, use of whole grains, use of vaccinations, and regular check-ups".
Cat's claw found in in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, is a genus Uncaria, belonging to the family Rubiaceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine over two thousand years as a tonic, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory, and infectious agent, and to treat diarrhea, rheumatic disorders, acne, diabetes, cancer and diseases of the urinary tract, etc..

The Chemical Ingredients
The chemical constituents of Cat's claw include ajmalicine, akuammigine, campesterol, catechin, carboxyl alkyl esters, chlorogenic acid, cinchona, corynantheine, corynoxeine, daucosterol, epicatechin, harman, hirsuteine, hirsutine, iso-pteropodine.

In the study of anti-cancer effect of the preparation Cat's claw in several cancer cell lines to determine the IC (50) values with different quantitative and qualitative oxindole alkaloid composition: B/W(37) --bark extracted in water at 37 °C, B/W(b)--bark extracted in boiling water, B/50E(37) --bark extracted in 50% ethanol at 37 °C, B/E(b)--bark extracted in boiling 96% ethanol, B/96E(37) --bark extracted in 96% ethanol at 37 °C and B/SRT--bark extracted in water and dichloromethane researchers found that

* A high correlation between the total oxindole alkaloid content (from 0.43% to 50.40% d.m.) and the antiproliferative activity of the preparations (IC(50) from >1000 μg/ml to 23.57 μg/ml).

* B/96E(37) and B/SRT were the most cytotoxic preparations

* B/96E(37) are most active against Lewis lung carcinoma (LL/2) [IC(50) =25.06 μg/ml], cervical carcinoma (KB) [IC(50) =35.69 μg/ml] and colon adenocarcinoma (SW707) [IC(50) =49.06 μg/ml].

* B/SRT was especially effective in inhibiting proliferation of cervical carcinoma (KB) [IC(50) =23.57 μg/ml], breastcarcinoma (MCF-7) [IC(50) =29.86 μg/ml] and lung carcinoma (A-549) [IC(50) =40.03 μg/ml].

* In animal studies on mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma showed significant inhibition of tumor growth by B/W(37) administered for 21 days at daily doses of 5 and 0.5 mg (p=0.0009).

* There are no adverse effects in all preparations.

The results suggested that Cat's claw is effective against cancer through its cytotoxicity, however, the cancer cells inhibition is totally depending on the dose of concentrations.

Furthermore, in the study to reaffirm the traditional use of the preparations from Uncaria tomentosa, a South American Rubiaceae, for the treatment of infective, inflammatory and tumoral processes, researchers launched an investigation to test whether the pentacyclic oxindole alkaloid mitraphylline isolated from the dried inner bark of this plant species has a similar anticancer effect in human Ewing's sarcoma MHH-ES-1 and breast cancer MT-3 cell lines.

Administration at the IC (50) +/- SE values of17.15 +/- 0.82 microM for MHH-ES-1 and 11.80 +/- 1.03 microM for MT-3 for 30 hours exerted a clinically significant inhibition of the human sarcoma and breast cancer cell line in a dose-dependent manner.

The finding suggested that Cat's claw may have a chemotherapeutic effect in the prevention and treatment of cancer without inducing any adverse effects.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, additional data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the preparations during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Cat's claw anti-cancers possibilities.

Green Tea GTE and EGCG, The Natural Anti Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Supplements

Scientists may have found a beverage's extract and bioactive compound for the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), some studies suggested.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a medical disorder which cannot be explained by an underlying medical condition, characterized by persistently extreme fatigue that never goes away regardless of treatment.for at least 6 months.

The exact causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that the conditions are the results of viral infection and chronic stress syndrome.

The University of South Florida (USF Health) in the article "Chronic fatigue syndrome: Inherited virus can cause cognitive dysfunction and fatigue" wrote, "Medveczky's team discovered that untreated CIHHV-6 patients with CFS showed signs that the HHV-6 virus was actively replicating: determined by the presence of HHV-6 messenger RNA (mRNA), a substance produced only when the virus is active".

In the psychological aspects of chronic fatigue syndrome, Dr. Takakazu Oka at the International University of Health and Welfare wrote, " psychological stress is involved in the CFS onset, exacerbation, and/or relapse, while early life stress acts as a risk factor toward the development of CFS in later life" and "CFS patients may have disrupted stress systems, including HPA axis hypofunction and ANS alterations characterized by sympathetic overactivity and low vagal tone. Individuals with CFS respond to psychological stress".

Some researchers also found that elimination diets, dietary restriction and the addition of nutritional supplements to habitual diet may have a beneficial effect in reducing fatigue.

The randomized control trials, including pilot studies, compared a form of nutritional supplement with a placebo control suggested, treatment of a combination of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydride (NADH) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) exerts a significant reduction of fatigue after 8 weeks, compared to placebo.

Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the concerns of the oxidative stress in the exhibited CFS, researchers at the Panjab University launched an investigation to examine the protective effect of green tea extract (GTE) and catechin in the mouse model of CFS.

CFS animals used in the study forced swimming test session of 6 minutes every day for 7 days demonstrated a significant increase in immobility time on successive days.

Treatment with GTE (25 or 50 mg/kg, i.p.) and catechin (50 or 100 mg/kg, i.p.) for 7 days reversed the dysfunction of immobility.

Furthermore, the protection of green tea extract was correlated with the lowered levels of lipid peroxidation and restoration of reduced glutathione levels in the brains of fatigued mice.

These results suggested that oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of CFS.

Dr. Singal A, the lead scientist said, "GTE and catechin could be used as potential agents in the management of CFS and warrant the inclusion of GTE and catechin in the treatment regimen of CFS patients".

Moreover, in the evaluate pathogenesis of chronic fatigue syndrome involved increased oxido-nitrosative stress along with the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, in chronic fatigue rats induced by a plunge of a load of 10 ± 2% body weight and forced swim inside a rectangular jar daily for 28 days, researchers found that

* Before application of EGCG, chronic fatigue rats exhibited significant behavioral alterations along with enhanced oxido-nitrosative stress and serum TNF-α level, compared to the naive group.

* Chronic treatment with EGCG restored all the behavioral and biochemical alterations associated with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Additionally, in the study of chronic fatigue induced in mice by subjecting them to forced swim inside a rectangular jar of specific dimensions for 6 min. daily for 15 days, researchers found that Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG; 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg, p.o.) administered daily 30 min. before a forced swim session
* Increased oxidative-nitrosative stress and tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels in the brain of mice before green tea administration compared with the naive group.

* These behavioral and biochemical alterations were restored after chronic treatment with EGCG.

Taken altogether, green tea extract (GTE) and its bioactive chemicals EGCG may have the therapeutic effect in reducing the risk and treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome

Emodin, the Bioactive Ingredient of Herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) which Protects Our Body Against the Onset of Metabolic Syndrome

Emodin, a major bioactive compound found in herbal Cascara Sagrada may be considered an adjunct therapy in the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, some scientists suggested.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with the increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke, including high blood pressure and sugar, excess body weight and obesity, abnormally high levels of blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of metabolic syndrome. However, they do know that ethnicity and family history and mutation of genes which causes insulin resistance inherited from the parents are the numbers of risk factor associated with the early onset of the condition.

Certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome and gallstone disease, nonalcoholic fatty livers are also the prevalent risk factors for the development of metabolic syndrome.

It is misleading that metabolic syndrome can only cause heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, people with metabolic syndrome are also associated with an increased risk of excessive blood clotting and persistent low-grade inflammation throughout the body.

Treatment of metabolic syndrome should be followed closely to the underlining risk factors of abdominal obesity, physical inactivity, and atherogenic/diabetogenic diet and drug therapy for specific metabolic risk factors should be considered for those at high or moderately high 10-year absolute risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute slightly modifies and clarifies the diagnostic criteria for the metabolic syndrome.

Medication used to reduce the level of progression of metabolic syndrome-related disorders including thiazolidinediones, GLP-1 agonists, and DPP-4 inhibitors may be effective, however, they can induce serious side effects such as edema, weight gain, macular edema, and heart failure.

Some patients who take the medicine may also experience side effects of hypoglycemia, decreased hematocrit and hemoglobin levels and increased bone fracture risk.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

Cascara sagrada bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc., effect.

The chemical ingredients
Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, other compounds include anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD).

In the concerns of the side effects of conventional medicine used for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers at the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica launched an investigation of the effect of emodin, a natural product and active ingredient of various Chinese herbs including Cascara Sagrada in metabolic disorders in diet-induced obese (DIO) mice.

Emodin exerted a significant effect as a potent and selective 11beta-HSD1 inhibitor against insulin resistance and with the IC(50) of 186 and 86 nM for human and mouse 11beta-HSD1, respectively

11β-HSD1, a family of enzymes which have been found to associate with the risk of insulin resistance.

Furthermore, single oral administration of emodin inhibited 11beta-HSD1 activity of liver and fat significantly in mice without reversing the prednisone and dexamethasone-induced insulin resistance.

In DIO mice, oral administration of emodin improved insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism and lowered blood glucose and hepatic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), and glucose-6-phosphatase mRNA.

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) is associated with the control of hepatic glucose output.

Glucose-6-phosphatase mRNA is increased to some extents in kidney and liver of diabetic rats.

The findings suggested the potential value of analogs of emodin for the treatment of metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes.

Moreover, researchers at the extended study of the effect emodin in metabolic syndrome mice associated with 11beta-HSD1 activity also discovered that emodin inhibited the 11β-HSD1 activity in 3T3-L1 adipocytes in concentration- and time-dependent manners (the IC₅₀ values of 7.237 and 4.204 μmol/L, respectively, after 1 and 24 h treatment, through suppressing the 11-dehydrocorticosterone-in the generation of corticosterone without affecting corticosterone-induced adipogenesis in normal tissues..

3T3-L1 adipocytes are used as cell culture model of insulin resistance
-
Adipogenesis is the process of cell differentiation from pre-adipocytes to adipocytes.

Moreover, emodin (3 μmol/L) partly reversed the impaired insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and adiponectin secretion induced by 11-dehydrocorticosterone but not those induced by corticosterone.

In ob/ob mice, long-term emodin administration decreased 11β-HSD1 activity in mesenteric adipose tissues, lowered non-fasting and fasting blood glucose levels, and improved glucose tolerance.

Dr. Wang YJ, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders, wrote, "Emodin improves the inactive glucocorticoid-induced adipose tissue dysfunction by selective inhibition on 11β-HSD1 in adipocyte in vitro and improves glycemic control in ob/ob mice".

Taken altogether, Cascara Sagrada bioactive compound emodin may be considered an adjunct supplement used alone for the prevention or combined with other conventional medicine for the treatment of metabolic syndrome without inducing adverse effects.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, additional data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compound emodin during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Cascara sagrada anti-metabolic syndrome possibilities.

Allicin, the Potent and Powerful Anti Cognitive Decline Phytochemical

Allicin, a bioactive and organosulfur compound may have a profound effect in improving the cognitive function in the elderly, some scientists suggested.

Cognitive activity is a long-term process of reasoning, memory, attention, and language and information accumulated that lead to knowledge.

In elderly, the causes of cognitive dysfunction are associated with a set of factors, including medication side effects, metabolic and/or endocrine derangements due to aging, delirium due to intercurrent illness, depression, and dementia.

Dr. Ian M. Deutchki, MD University of Rochester, in the article What’s causing my older patient’s cognitive decline? wrote, "n primary care settings, when patients complain of memory loss, there is a 20% to 30% chance they will be found to have a mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or some level of dementia" and "Remote memory, semantic memory (factual information), and procedural memory (knowledge of skills and procedures) tend to remain intact with aging.4 Short-term memory (simple maintenance of information over a short period of time) shows little change with aging. However, working memory, which requires the manipulation of in decline".

Some researchers suggested besides the correlated factors of aging in the risk of cognitive decline, a healthy diet, and lifestyle accompanied by physical inactivity also some of the risk factors which have a significant effect in the contribution of cognitive decline.

Dr. P.J. Smith, the lead author at the Duke University Medical Center, in the concerns of cognitive decline, an increasingly important public health problem, with more than 100 million adults worldwide is associated change of lifestyle said, "lifestyle factors including dietary patterns, may be important in the prevention of cognitive decline and dementia in later life" and "antioxidants, fatty acids, and B vitamins are associated with better cognitive functioning"

This conclusion suggested that by following a healthy diet pattern, lifestyle and moderate exercise before the onset of the syndrome is one of the best methods in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases in the later life.

In elderly with the cognitive decline, Dr. María Alicia Camina suggested malnutrition is a highly prevalent geriatric syndrome in the elderly with dementia, especially in institutionalized patients and in subjects in advanced stages of the illness.

Therefore by changing the pattern of diet that target of malnutrition in the elderly, through nutritional screening and a complete nutritional assessment, the progression of cognitive decline in the elderly can be slow down.

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

Dr. Li XH, the lead scientist in the research program at the Medicine of Jishou University in the reaffirming the effect of allicin in the learning and memory abilities in the course of normal aging cognitive abilities associated with the Nrf2 expression in the decline with aging launched an investigation to assess the effects of allicin on endogenous antioxidant defenses in hippocampus of cognitively impaired aged mouse.

The organosulfur compounds, allicin activated Nrf2 during the application process by donating an electron pair to an electrophile to form a chemical bond in relation to a reaction through its electrophil·ic effect.

Treatment of allicin significantly through the expression of Nrf2 antioxidant signaling pathways ameliorated aging-induced cognitive dysfunction in the tested aged mouse.

The Nrf2 antioxidant signaling pathways are master mediators of antioxidant and detoxification responses and regulators of the cellular redox state that protects us from pathologies that are caused or exacerbated by oxidative stress in the induction of aging-related diseases, including cognitive decline.

Furthermore, the antioxidant also plays an important role in metabolic regulation and its interaction with central signaling systems that respond to nutritional inputs. These results have a strong impact in the theory associated with malnutritional effects that cause the onset of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease in the elderly.

At the final report of the experiment, the researchers wrote, "allicin could be recommended as a possible candidate for the prevention and therapy of cognitive deficits in aging and Alzheimer's disease".

In the further differentiation of the oxidative modification of DNA, proteins, and lipids associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the initiation of aging and disease, including cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases and cancer, researchers showed
* Extracts of aged garlic extract (AGE) contain antioxidant phytochemical allicin exerts a protective activity against oxidant damage.

* Up to 20 months garlic aged extract, creates antioxidant properties that inhibit the unstable free radicals with antioxidant activity, such as allicin, that lead to a stable and highly bioavailable water-soluble organosulfur compounds.

* Allicin and other compound found in AGE inhibited the overexpression of ROS by enhancing the cellular antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase, and increasing glutathione in the cells.

* The chemical ingredients of the AGE also inhibits lipid peroxidation by reducing ischemic/reperfusion damage and inhibiting oxidative modification of LDL, thus protecting endothelial cells from the injury by the oxidized molecules, which contributes to atherosclerosis.

More importantly, Allicin and compounds in the AGE showed the ability to protect against oxidant-induced disease, acute damage from aging, radiation and chemical exposure, and long-term toxic damage.

Taken altogether, Allicin, the major bioactive compound found in garlic and onion may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention of cognitive decline and an adjunct therapy with conventional medicine to delay the progression of neurodegenerative diseases in elderly.

Phytochemical Polysulfides, The Potent Anti Breast Cancer Bioactive Supplement

Polysulfide, a bioactive and organic phytochemical found most in garlic and onion may have a strong effect in reducing risk and treatment of breast cancer, some studies found.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissue. At the early stage, most breast cancer starts in the cell with alternated DNA of the surface the breast inner linings.

At the advanced stage, the breast cancer cell can travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of lymph and blood.

The exact causes of the alternation of breast cells DNA are unknown. However, researchers do know that genetic preposition of gene BRCA 1 and 2 are one of the major risk factors which are associated with 8% on all breast cancer onset.

Unfortunately, women who carry the mutated genes BRCA 1 and 2 have a 60% increased risk of breast cancer.

Dr. Angèle S and colleagues in the examining gene implication in the risk breast cancer wrote, "Loss of heterozygosity in the region of the ATM gene on chromosome 11, has been found in about 40% of sporadic breast tumors. However, screening for ATM mutations in sporadic breast cancer cases, showing or not adverse effects to radiotherapy, has not revealed the magnitude of involvement of the ATM gene expected".

Furthermore, in the concerns of the unprecedented rise in obesity, and the health impact in elevated the risk of chronic diseases, researchers at the joint study led by the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center launched an investigation of "Obesity and adverse breast cancer risk and outcome".

The results were published in the medical literature online of the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.

At the final report, researchers wrote, "Obesity is associated both with a higher risk of developing breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women and with worse disease outcome for women of all ages." and "increased physical activity is associated with lower breast cancer risk and better outcomes. The effects of recent lifestyle interventions to decrease sex steroids, insulin/insulin‐like growth factor‐1 pathway activation, and inflammatory biomarkers associated with worse breast cancer outcomes".

According to the statistic, in 2014, worldwide, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight (body mass index [BMI], 25‐29.9 kg/m2), and of these, over 600 million were obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2).

These result suggested, by following a healthy diet that has a strong activity in promoting weight loss and lifestyle with moderate exercise are the best method to decrease the risk of breast cancer.

Early diagnosis with self-examination also reduced the risk of breast cancer onset and increasing the rate of survival,

The 5 years survival rate of the early stage of breast cancer is 100%.

Polysulfides are phytochemicals in a class of chemical compounds containing chains of sulfur atoms, belonging to the group ofOrganosulfides found abundantly in the oxidized product, including beer, wine, whiskey, garlic oil, etc.

In the study to reaffirm the effects of organosulfur compounds (OSCs), naturally found in Allium vegetables, in suppressing the proliferation of various tumor cells, researchers at the Laboratoire d'Ingénierie Moléculaire et Biochimie Pharmacologique conducted an experiment to find the specific molecular mechanisms involved in OSC.

Polysulfides isolated from the organosulfur compounds demonstrated a significant and breast cancer antiproliferation.
The phytochemical also exerted an inhibitory activity through cell cycle arrest by targeting the cell division cycle (Cdc) 25 phosphatases which are crucial enzymes of the cell cycle.

The growth of both sensitive (MCF-7) and resistant (Vcr-R) human breast carcinoma cells was significantly decreased by polysulfides.

Furthermore, in the identification of Identification of agents that are nontoxic but can delay onset and/or progression of breast cancer, by differentiating polysulfides, the garlic-derived organosulfur compounds (OSCs), a promising cancer chemopreventive constituent of garlic, on growth of two cell lines respectively, MCF-7 human breast cancer cells and nontumorigenic MCF-12a mammary epithelial cells.

Application of garlic constituent polysulfides suppressed the viability of cultured MCF-7 and MCF-12a cells respectively by decreasing the percent of cells in G(2)/M and inducing apoptotic cell death.
Polysulfides induced apoptosis was markedly elevated in MCF-7 cells compared with MCF-12a cells and this was correlated with elevated levels of cyclin B1, a program cell mediators.

Moreover, application of the garlic isolated compound also increased expression of apoptotic and decreased the expression of proliferative enzymes and proteins in MCF-7 cells.

The results suggested that polysulfides displayed a strong anti-breast cancer effect through apoptotic and antiproliferative pathways.

Taken altogether, polysulfides including a class of chemical compounds containing chains of sulfur atoms may be considered a functional bioactive compound for the prevention of breast cancer and an adjunct supplement combined with primary treatment for breast cancer.

Phytochemical Dithiolthiones Protect the Liver Against Liver Toxicity

Dithiolthiones, a bioactive plant-based compound found in many vegetables may have a strong implication in reducing the risk and treatment of liver diseases, some studies suggested.

Liver protection is an action, including the use of substances to protect the liver function against damage or injury.

There are many causes of liver diseases associated with a variety of factors including; viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes.

However, one the major cause of the liver diseases are toxins accumulation. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the expression of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.

And, long-term excessive alcohol drinking is generally known to cause the onset of alcoholic liver disease, the very early stage of liver cancer.

A study in the Brazil population to differentiation of the risk of liver diseases in a total of 57,380 DALYs (30.3 per 100,000 inhabitants) attributable to chronic hepatitis B and cirrhosis due to hepatitis B, with 41,262 DALYs in men showed, "Chronic viral hepatitis and liver cirrhosis are responsible for a significant burden in Brazil, affecting mainly men and individuals still in their productive years. The most burden is related to non-viral causes of cirrhosis, with a major contribution of alcohol".

Where disability-adjusted life year (DALY) is a sum of years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLL) and years lived with disability (YLD).

Liver toxins accumulated over the years of unhealthy diet with much in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods and fewer in fruits and vegetables.

Dr. Mirmiran P, in the reaffirm the general belief, unhealthy diet plays a key role in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) said, "Intakes of red meat, fats, and sweets were high whereas consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegetables were less in NAFLD patients. Moreover, there was a positive association between the Western dietary pattern and the risk of NAFLD, while adherence to the Mediterranean diet was significantly associated with the severity of hepatic steatosis".

These results suggested that by changing the diet pattern by increasing intake more in fruits and vegetable and whole grain and reducing intake of the saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods accompanied by a healthy lifestyle, risk of liver diseases are decreased substantially.

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

The effect of drug anisyldithiolthione (ADT) was attributed to its major compound dithiolthiones, therefore application dithiolthiones directly may have a similar effect as of the drug anisyldithiolthione (ADT).

* Dithiolthiones inhibited the lipid peroxidation induced in rat liver microsomes either chemically by FeSO4 and reducing agents (cysteine or ascorbate)

* Dithiolthiones m also has a potency similar to those of propyl gallate and toxicity caused by the ethane exhalation by rats treated by CCI4 (ID50 approximately 5mg per kg).

The result suggested dithiolthiones exerted a potency in protecting the liver against toxic chemical injection and lipid peroxidation.

Futhermore, anisydithiolthione (ADT), when given orally 1 hour prior to acetaminophen (AAP) (450 mg/kg intraperitoneally) in Swiss female mice, also exhibited an hepatoprotective potency at doses as low as 10 mg/kg relative to serum aminotransferase activities and hepatic glutathione-related enzyme system (glutathione reductase, peroxidase, transferase).

These results indicated, dithiolthiones also protect the liver oxidative stress through stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes in the tested mice.

Taken altogether, dithiolthiones may be considered a functional supplement for the protection of liver against substance and pathogens that cause liver diseases and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of liver diseases.

Apricot, the Potential Anti Breast Cancer Remedy, Scientists Say

Finding a cure for breast cancer from the botanical plants without inducing side effects has been a lifetime dream of many scientists. Unfortunately, as of today, the finding is still ongoing without much success.

However, according to some studies, apricot, the edible fruit may be the next pharmaceutical target to extract potential ingredients for the cure for breast cancer.

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition as the result of irregularly cell growth originated from the breast tissue. why women in the same health conditions, family history, and race, some are prone to develop the early onset of the disease while others do not.

Breast cancer is caused by the alternation of DNA of the cells in the breast tissue. Epidemiologically, certain prevalent factors are associated with an increased risk of the disease.

According to the probability for women to develop or die from breast cancer provided by the Canadian Cancer Statistics publication, the lifetime risk of a woman to develop is 1/8 and 1/31 of them will die from the disease.

The 5 years survival rate of the early stage of breast cancer is 100% compared to much less in the advanced stage.

Therefore, women with higher risk such as genetic preposition of gene BRAC1 and 2 should have their breast mammogram taken every year.

More importantly, Dr. Zainab Taha, the lead author in the study "The Role of Diet and Lifestyle in Women with Breast Cancer: An Update Review of Related Research in the Middle East" wrote,
"There is an alarming epidemic of obesity among women in most of the EMR countries, especially Gulf Coopers action Council (GCC) countries. The rise in the new breast cancer cases among women could be attributed to excess body weight. Their dietary pattern, which correlates with obesity, can be an important factor in the etiology of cancer.".

These results\ strongly suggested that diet and lifestyle associated with the onset of obesity are major contributors in the early onset of breast cancer.

In other words, if you follow a healthy diet with a lot of fruits and vegetable, whole grain with less in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed and lifestyle with moderate exercise, you are at the lower end in the risk factor scale of breast cancer.

The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belongs to the family Rosaceae. Apricot is classified with the family of the plum and has yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.

Chemical constituents of apricot include
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(a) and flavonoid glycosides, (b),

In the reaffirming the MK615, an extract mixture containing hydrophobic substances from Japanese apricot. anti-cancer possibility, researchers at the Dokkyo University School of Medicine conducted an evaluation to examine the antineoplastic effects of MK615 against breast cancer cells.
The experiment includes 2 breast cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-468 (MDA) and MCF7, were cultured with (600, 300, and 150 mug/mL) or without MK615.

After 72 hours of incubation, researchers showed that

* MK615 inhibited the growth of MDA and MCF7 in a dose-dependent manner.

* The percentage growth inhibition of MDA at dosages of 600, 300, and 150 mg/mL was 59.2%, 52.4%, and 23.3%, respectively, and that for MCF7 was 83.5%, 52.7%, and 16.6%, respectively.

* MK615 treatment included massive vacuolization in the cytoplasm and apoptotic changes in the nucleus.

* Cell cycle analysis showed that MK615 increased the proportion of cells in the G2-M phase in both MDA (7.8-11.7%) and MCF7 (8.1-18.7%), and finally both cell lines became apoptotic.

These results suggested MK615 effectively inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells in vitro, through cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.

Furthermore, in the concerns of breast cancer continued to cause high cancer death rates among women worldwide, researchers at the joint study led by the Universiti Sains Malaysia launched an evaluation to examine the plant-based products which have demonstrated anticancer potential through different biological pathways including modulation of the immune system. Immunomodulatory properties of medicinal plants have been shown to mitigate breast cancer cell growth.

Out of the medical plants selected including Glycyrrhiza glabra, Uncaria tomentosa, Camellia sinensis, Panax ginseng, Prunus armenaica (apricot), Allium sativum, Arctium lappa and Curcuma longa, malic acid and quinic acid isolated from apricot exerted a significant activity in regulating the immune system potentially applicable in breast cancer treatment via anti-inflammatory and lymphocytes activation.

Taken all together, apricot may be considered a functional food for the prevention and a secondary therapy combined conventional medicine for the treatment of breast cancer.
