Phytochemical Piperine, the Bioactive Compound May Process Anti Asthmatic Potency, Scientists Suggest

Scientists may have found a natural compound for the prevention and treatment of asthma with no side effects, according to the studies.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

According to the statistics, in Canada, the number of people with asthma continues to grow. One in 12 people or 8% of the population had asthma in 2009, compared with 1 in 14 (about 20 million, or 7%) in 2001.

Asthma attacks had affected over 53% of people with asthma, compared to 57% in children in 2008.

Signs and symptoms of asthma can be triggered by airborne substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste. Respiratory infections, such as the common cold also be found to be the major contribution of asthma in children.

Although, researchers do not know why? people with the same health conditions in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of asthma, while others do not. However, researchers do know, family history, race, being obese or obese, having another allergic disease, being a smoker, long-term exposure to smoking and irritable chemicals are at the increased risk of asthma development.

Dr. Mahdi Bijanzadeh, the lead scientist in the summary of " An understanding of the genetic basis of asthma" wrote, in the "Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease in developed nations and its prevalence has increased in the world over the last 25 years. It is a complex disease with both genetic and environmental risk factors. Asthma is caused by multiple interacting genes, some having a protective effect and others contributing to the disease pathogenesis, with each gene having its own tendency to be influenced by the environment".

These results firmly suggested that people inherited a mutated gene from their parent may also be at a higher risk of the disease.

According to Medscape, the 10 genes (IL1RL1/IL18, TSLP, IL33, SMAD3, HLA-DQ, ORMDL3, IL2RB, SLC22A5, IL13, and RORA), 6 of which were confirmed by EVE investigators (IL1RL1/IL18, TSLP, IL33, SMAD3, HLA-DQ and ORMDL3).{Re9} 10 genes have been identified with strong association with the onset of asthma.

Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.

On finding a natural bioactive compound or whole food for the treatment of asthma, researchers at the JSS College of Pharmacy, Rocklands, examined the different plant extracts and phytoconstituents with the proven anti-asthmatic property.

Piper Longum L. Extract (20% Piperine) demonstrated a significant effect against human pathogens causing upper respiratory infection namely Haemophilus influenza, Streptococcus pneumonia, Streptococcus pyrogen, and Staphylococcus aureus.

Furthermore, researchers examined the effects of increasing levels of antioxidant in asthmatic patients against continued oxidative stress to determine the hypothesis of boosting the antioxidant defenses of asthma patient that could be beneficial as it may help thwart symptoms of lung disease and asthma.

The results of the experiment are astonishing.

Piper longum extracts at the same concentration of 20% piperine or piperine at 98% concentration, displayed a potent antioxidant activity by Nitric oxide radical inhibition activity method.

Dr. Nilani P, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounder, said, "Piper longum extract (20% Piperine),..... and piperine (98%) could be utilized in alternate anti-asthmatic therapy, since they play a vital role in scavenging Nitric oxide which could prevent the bronchial inflammation in asthmatic patients.".

The finding suggested that piperine processed anti-asthmatic property through its antioxidants and antibacterial activity.

Taken altogether, piperine may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for treatment of asthma, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Allicin, the Potent Anti Liver Cancer Bioactive Compound, According to Scientists

Scientists may have found a natural compound for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer with no side effects, according to the studies.

Liver cancer is a condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

Since the organ is a soft tissue with less nerve, most liver cancer patients are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer and do not experience any symptoms in the early stage.

At the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect the healthy cells of other tissue and organs, leading secondary metastasis.

According to the statistic, liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide. In Canada, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer. The disease caused 1200 death in 2017.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

Besides the most common symptoms associated with all cancers, liver cancer patients may experience symptoms of abdominal swelling, jaundice, and white, chalky stools.

Although aging, gender, ethnicity, other liver diseases, hepatitis viruses, obesity is considered one of the major risk factor associated with the onset of the disease.

Dr. Aleksandrova K, the lead author examined the obesity in the risk of liver cancer, said, "Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes is an increasingly recognized trigger for liver cancer in Western populations characterized by low prevalence of established risk factors for liver cancer such as viral hepatitis and hepatotoxin exposure".

And, "Recent evidence has implicated several molecular pathways in obesity-associated liver cancer. These include insulin resistance leading to increased levels of insulin and insulin-like growth factors, chronic inflammation, adipose tissue remodeling, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, and adipokine secretion, and altered gut microbiota".

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

With an aim to find a natural compound with no side effects for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) which is the most prevalent type of liver cancer globally and ranks first among the cancer-related mortalities in Taiwan, researchers examined the modes of cell death mechanism induced by allicin, a major phytochemical of crushed garlic, in human hepatoma cells.

Allicin treatment was found to induce autophagic cell death in human HCC Hep G2 (p53(wild-type)) cells.

Furthermore, allicin induced apoptotic cell death through proteins associated with pro apoptosis

Moreover, allicin activates the reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction to induce cytotoxicity against the human HCC Hep 3B (p53(mutation)) cells without causing harms to the nearby healthy cells.

The finding strongly suggested that allicin protects the normal through its antioxidant activity without inducing inhibition of the overexpression of free radicals.

Additionally, allicin treatment induced apoptotic cell death through gene (p53) involved cell cycle arrest similar to that of Hep 3B cells.

Dr. Chu YL, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, wrote, "allicin induced cell death in human hepatoma cells through either autophagy or apoptosis".

And, "(allicin) might be a potential novel complementary gene therapeutic agent for the treatment of apoptosis-resistant cancer cells".

Taken altogether, phytochemical allicin may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of liver cancer.

Manuka Honey, The Anti Antioxidants Functional Sweety

Honey may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataract, and cancer.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules with a unique function in the inhibition of oxidation.

Dr. V. Lobo, the lead author in the study "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health" wrote, " A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues", and

"Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases. Hence application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".

These results suggested that regardless of the causes of the overexpression of free radicals, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants from a supplement, herbs, fruits, and vegetables can be beneficial in restoring the healthy ratio of free radicals and antioxidants and preventing the onset of oxidative stress.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In order to understand the honey antioxidant activity which has been under intensified study by the science community, a joint study led by the researchers conducted was conducted in an animal model.

Ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats were randomly assigned to control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey.

Honey treated rats displayed a clinically significant decrease of the ulcer index by completely protected the mucosa from lesions and preserved gastric mucosal glycoprotein.

Application of manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the marker of oxidative stress and plasma TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 concentrations, the set of proinflammatory cytokines produced by the ethanol injection.

The results were attributed to the manuka honey in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of ethanol in the tested rats.

The finding suggested that manuka honey exerted a strong antioxidant activity by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in the treatment group.

In other words, manuka honey inhibited the oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of the onset of the ulcer.

Further differentiation to reaffirm the effects of manuka honey in the inhibition of gastric ulcer in the rat model, researchers examined three different concentrations of honey applied to the tested rats.

During the experiment, researchers found that all 3 different concentration display a strong effect in It reducing the mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and the inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) compared to the untreated control group.

In other words, manuka honey protects the rat stomach by inhibiting the overexpression free radical and proinflammatory cytokines in inducing oxidative stress.

Application manuka honey also showed a significant increase in enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and nonenzymatic (GSH) antioxidants which were reduced due to ulcer and levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

The Flow cytometry assay also indicated that treatment of rats with manuka honey has normalized cell cycle distribution and significantly lowered apoptosis in gastric mucosa.

The information collected strong support the use of manuka honey for the treatment of chronic ulcer and preservation of mucosal glycoproteins.

Dr. Almasaudi SB wrote in the final report, "Its (manuka honey) effects are due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that resulted in a significant reduction of the gastric mucosal MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 and caused an elevation in IL-10 levels.

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that manuka honey high in antioxidants can be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane, the Potential Anti Colon Cancer Bioactive Compound, According to Researchers

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM may have a profound and positive effect in reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, according to studies.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the colon.

Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon tissue. It is one of the most slow-growing cancer that takes years to develop. Therefore, most patients in the early stage of cancer do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the advanced stage, cancer can cause severe rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal pain due to the larger size tumor that has pressed on the nearby nerve cells and blood vessels.

According to the statistics, the risk of CRC increases with age; the median age at diagnosis for colon cancer is 68 in men and 72 in women.

The data of colon provided by CDC showed that every year, 97,000 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed.

Besides sharing the common symptoms with other types of cancer such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, persistent fatigue, and tiredness, patients with colon cancer may also experience symptoms of change of bowel movement, rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal discomforts, such as cramps, gas or pain.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of colon cancer, some researchers suggested aging may be one of the most prevalent risks.

Donna Myers on the examination of the time that needed for a polyp or growth of tissue in the lining to cancer and the percentage of colon cancer cases in people age 50 or older, said, " By the time colorectal cancer is diagnosed, it has often been growing for several years, first as a non-cancerous polyp and later as cancer. Research indicates that by age 50, one out of four people has polyps".

The results strongly suggested that if you are at the age of 50 and a higher risk of colon cancer, you may want to have a colonoscopy done every 3 years.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

Researchers on finding the natural compounds for the treatment of colon cancer examined the two anti-cancer agents (doxycycline or 3,3'-diindolylmethane) on HCT-116 and HT-29 colon cancer cell lines.

Injection of the 2 compounds resulted in profound changes in the intracellular content of several lncRNAs (by up to 100 times secreted by tumors into the bloodstream.

The results strongly suggested that by examining the levels of lncRNAs colon cancer expression can be monitored through tumor relapse and metastasis.

In order to reveal more information about 3the Sulindac (SU; 320 ppm) effect on colon cancer, researchers examined two natural compounds, 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM; 250 ppm) and curcumin (CUR; 2000 ppm), with or without lower doses of SU could affect carcinogenesis.

Colon tumors were significantly reduced by SU 320 ppm (62 % reduction over Controls), by DIM and CUR without or with SU 80 and 160 ppm (50, 53 and 58 % reduction, respectively) but not by SU 80 ppm alone.

Futhermore, total tumors (colon and small intestine) were found to reduce substantially by SU (80 and 320 ppm) and by DIM and CUR.

Apoptosis in the normal mucosa was significantly increased by SU 320 ppm and slightly increased by DIM and CUR with or without SU.

The combination of SU with DIM or Cur also caused a slight reduction in Survivin-Birc5 expression observed with all the treatments compared to controls.

Where Survivin-Birc5 protein is found to inhibit caspases associated with the blocking of cancer cell death. The protein is highly expressed in most cancers associated with a poor clinical outcome.

The results strongly reaffirmed the anti-colon cancer activity of DIM and CUR combination.

Taken altogether, DIM used alone or combined with another bioactive compound may be considered a supplement for the prevention and comn=bined with primary medicine for the treatment of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of DIM as o form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ginger, The Potential Anti Type 2 Diabetes Pungent Spice, Scientists Say

Ginger may be next generation whole food used for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Researchers do not know what causes the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up. However, they do know obesity or overweight, gender, ethnicity, age, family history, gestation diabetes, are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Some researchers also suggested that people with certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is more prone to the onset of the disease.

Most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

If you experience some of the symptoms above, please make you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of diabetes.

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

Dr. Rita R. Kalyani in the study to examine the increase with age and risk of type 2 diabetes wrote, "The unprecedented aging of the world's population is a major contributor to the diabetes epidemic, and older adults represent one of the fastest growing segments of the diabetes population".

"Almost one-third of U.S. adults over the age of 65 years have diabetes. Approximately half of those are undiagnosed, and an additional one-third of older adults have prediabetes" and "management of older adults with diabetes is clearly more complicated given the observation that they commonly have multiple coexisting medical conditions that can impact clinical management".

Compared to the general population risk of type 2 diabetes, the results clearly stated, the risk of type diabetes in elderly is 3 fold higher and the management of the disease is more difficult due accompanied by other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with little or no side effects, researchers looked into the effects of ginger consumption on glycemic status, lipid profile and some inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial, included 70 type 2 diabetic patients allocated randomly into ginger group consumed 1600 mg ginger and control group consumed 1600 mg wheat flour daily for 12 weeks.

Patients treated with ginger demonstrated a significant effect in reducing the levels of fasting plasma glucose, 3 months average glucose concentration, insulin resistance.

Furthermore, the blood profile of treatment group also displayed lower levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, a hormone associated with lipid peroxidation. compared to the placebo group.

There were no significant differences in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein LDL, and TNFα, the inflammatory cytokine between two groups.

The findings firmly indicated ginger improves insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profiles and reduced inflammation in type 2 diabetic patients.

Additionally, with an aim to reaffirm the effects of ginger against the development of type 2 diabetes and diabetic complications, researchers investigated the effect of ginger supplementation on glycemic indices in Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial included 20-60 -year-old patients with type 2 diabetes who did not receive insulin.

Participants in the intervention and control groups were received 3 g of powdered ginger or placebo (lactose) (in capsules) daily for 3 months.

At the end of the 3 months, researchers showed that all parameters associated diabetes were reduced substantially in the treatment group compared to control.

More precisely, the differences between the ginger and placebo groups were statistically significant as follows: serum glucose (-19.41 ± 18.83 vs. 1.63 ± 4.28 mg/dL, p < 0.001), (Hemoglobin A1C)HbA1c percentage (-0.77 ± 0.88 vs. 0.02 ± 0.16%, p < 0.001), insulin (-1.46 ± 1.7 vs. 0.09 ± 0.34 μIU/mL, p < 0.001), insulin resistance (-16.38 ± 19.2 vs. 0.68 ± 2.7, p < 0.001), high-sensitive CRP (-2.78 ± 4.07 vs. 0.2 ± 0.77 mg/L, p < 0.001), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) (22.04 ± 24.53 vs. 1.71 ± 2.72 U/L, p < 0.006), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (0.78 ± 0.71 vs. -0.04 ± 0.29 µIU/mL, p < 0.01) and MDA (-0.85 ± 1.08 vs. 0.06 ± 0.08 µmol/L, p < 0.001) were significantly different.

Where paraoxonase ((PON)-1 is an enzyme associated with the protection against lipid oxidation, Malondialdehyde (MDA) is an oxidative stress marker.

Dr. Shidfar F, the lead scientist said, " the 3 months supplementation of ginger improved glycemic indices, TAC and PON-1 activity in patients with type 2 diabetes".

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes with no side effects.

Thyme Honey, the Potential Anti Endometrial Cancer Functional Food

Honey may have a significant effect on reducing risk and treatment of endometrial cancer, some scientists suggested.

Endometrial cancer is a chronic condition characterized by the irregular cell in the tissue of the endometrium.

Most cases of endometrial cancer start on the cells in the surface of the inner lining of the endometrium. At the advanced stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers, malignant cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Endometrial cancer has been found to metastasize to the rectum, bladder, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes, vagina.

The exact causes of endometrial cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age, more years of menstruation, never been pregnant, obesity and use of hormone therapy are some the major prevalent risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.

Some researchers indicated that hormone change in the women body such as higher androgen and estrogen levels and lower levels of progesterone due to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) also is a major cause of endometrial cancer.

Dr. Navaratnarajah R, the lead author in the concern of the association of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) and the risk endometrial cancer, said, "several studies have been published that appear to support this association, and it is common practice among gynecologists and physicians to prescribe hormonal treatment to reduce this perceived risk".

"The mechanism(s) underlying any association is also unclear, but it is again widely assumed that chronic anovulation, which results in continuous estrogen stimulation of the endometrium unopposed by progesterone, is a major factor".

These result clearly state that long-term overexpression of estrogen and reduced levels of progesterone are associated with the onset of the diseases. However, the study of PCOs in the endometrial cancer risk should also be taken into accounts of obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperandrogenism, which are also features of PCOS and risk factors for endometrial carcinoma.

In the association of PCOs and endometrial cancer mortality, the doctor team indicated, there is no evidence to link the increased mortality from endometrial cancer in women with the syndrome.

The study once again reaffirms the link of the estrogen therapy used in menopause women for the treatment of climate symptoms. In other words, long-term high levels of estrogen compared to progesterone in the body is the major cause of endometrial cancer.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer, researchers examined the honey influence the oestrogenic activity.

The chemical composition and the potential of Greek honey extracts (thyme, pine and fir honey) were classified to evaluate the most inhibitory activity against the endometrial cancer cells Ishikawa line.

Compared to other honey, thyme honey processes the highest total phenolics, phenolic acids, and hydroxymethylfurfural.

Thyme honey inhibited the expression of Ishikawa by reducing the cancer cells viability.

Moreover, application of thyme honey also exerted a significant effect against Ishikawa and other cancer cell lines by inhibiting the cancer cell proliferation, inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.

Futhermore, the inhibition of Thyme honey also found to associated with its function in the mediation of estrogen via modulation of the estrogen receptor activity, as estrogen agonists or antagonists in cancer cell lines on a tissue type-specific manner.

The efficacy of thyme honey anti endometrial cancer was probably associated with its polyphenols and phenolic acids (vanillic acid and protocatechuic acid and p10 hydroxybenzoic acid) as these compounds have been proven to inhibit cancer-related pathways and processes

These results indicated that thyme honey monitored cell proliferation may be useful in cancer prevention, particularly, in endometrial cancer, though it's agonists/antagonists properties.

Dr. Mari Jaakkola, the lead scientist in the conclusion of the study said, " honey, especially the thyme honey, may be used as an alternative to sugar, while its incorporation in the human diet or as a food ingredient may prevent cancer-related processes, promoting thus the health of consumers".

Taken altogether, Thyme honey processed major bioactive compounds polyphenols and phenolic acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with other primary therapy for the treatment of endometrial cancer without inducing any side effects

Artichoke Kills Leukemic Cells Before They Can Spread, According to Studies

Artichoke may have a positive and profound effect in reducing risk and treatment of leukemia with no side effects, according to studies.

Leukemia is a medical condition arisen from the abnormal white blood cells produced by the bone marrow.

There are several forms of leukemia, including acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

CLL and AML are the most common cancers in adults and ALL are most common in children.

Contrast to chronic leukemias that take months or years to develop, acute leukemias start and develop within days or weeks.

According to Leukemia Research, Leukemia causes the death of approximately 68,000 every year. Adults are 10 times more likely to develop the disease, compared to children.

And, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the 7th most common cancer in the U.S. The 5-year survival rate for all subtypes of leukemia is 61.4 percent.

Certain types of blood disorder, exposure to radioactive substances, and certain medication are some of the prevalent risks of cancer.

Some researchers suggested that cigarette smoking may contribute to the large part of AML onset compared to other subtypes.

Dr. Fircanis S in the study of "The relation between cigarette smoking and risk of acute myeloid leukemia: an updated meta-analysis of epidemiological studies" wrote in the final report, "current and ever smokers have 40% (RR 1.40, 95% CI 1.22-1.60; P < 0.001) and 25% (RR 1.25, 95% CI 1.15-1.36; P < 0.001) increased risk of developing AML when compared with non-smokers".

And, "Intensity of smoking of <10, 10-20, 20-30, and >30 cigarettes per day was associated with RRs of AML of 1.27, 1.36, 1.55, and 1.77, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Duration of smoking of <20 and >20 years was associated with RRs of 1.07 and 1.44, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Cumulative smoking of <10, 10-20, 20-30, and >30 pack-years was associated with RRs of 1.13, 1.23, 1.39, and 1.71, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend)".

The results strongly suggested that cigarette smoking is a major risk factor of acute myeloid leukemia and the risk of AML is increased depending on how many cigarettes that a person smokes a day.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural whole food for the treatment of leukemia against the overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines investigated the extract and 3 participating compounds of artichoke leaves (bracts on the human leukemia cell line.

Injection of the artichoke extract and compounds showed to modulate the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced activation of proinflammatory protein (NF-κB) and the intracellular proinflammatory reactive oxygen species.

Low concentrations of the extract inhibited the enzyme AKR1B1 associated with the activation of NF-κB and the expression of pro-inflammatory genes.

The efficacy of the extract in the attenuation of the expression of the inflammation-related enzymes COX-2 and MMP-2 was attributed to the inhibiting activity of NF-κB.

In other words, artichoke reduced the production of inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species in activation of the protein NF-κB.

By suppressing the enzyme AKR1B1, artichoke reduced the inflammatory expression in facilitating the onset of leukemia.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about artichoke extract (CCE) against leukemia researchers evaluated the CCE effect on the growth of L1210 and HL-60 leukemia cells.

Injection with a variety of concentrations of CCE (500-2500 microg/microL) for 24 h resulted in dose-dependent inhibition of leukemia cell growth observed by the cell cycle arrest in S phase.

CCE also induced apoptosis of leukemia cells, detected by the sub-G(0) cell population and apoptotic DNA fragmentation.

The findings suggested that CCE inhibits leukemia cells through several mechanisms including the proteins associated with cell cycle division, inflammation, and cell degradation.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
