Regular Walking Reduces Symptoms and Early Onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis in Age of 50Plus

Regular physical activity has long been found to associate to the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but the regular walking contribution of health benefits to reduced symptoms and risk of early onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis in the younger and older elderly have been controversial.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body. The disease affects more women than in men and generally occurs after the ages of 40 and diminishes the quality of life of many elders, leading to slowing joint damage progression(4).
In Europe, the disease has social consequences in constituted limitations in performing roles relating to working life as well as family and social life(3).

According to the School of Physiotherapy, University of Otago, Walking is a low-cost and low-impact activity, requiring little supervision and regular walking improved Quality of Life in managing pain symptoms for people with Rheumatoid Arthritis, such as pain(1), depending to walking route shape and the length of the walk(1).

On physical activity among patients with early RA, Dr. Silva CR and research team in the investigation of the Consensus of the Brazilian Society of (SBR) for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) suggested, walking is one of the most often practiced exercise (80.64%) recommended(2).

Dr. Lusa AL and colleagues at the Columbia University, said, "Psychosocial factors and body composition are potentially reversible contributors to walking speed in RA. Relative to articular disease activity and damage, nonarticular indicators were collectively more potent indicators of an individual's mobility limitations"(5).

In fact, regular walking also reduces risk of early onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis through long-term anti-inflammatory effect but a single bout of walking as it does not lead to a change in various markers of inflammation or lymphocyte adherence to cultured endothelial cells. (6).

Nordic walking, in the study of overweight and obesity postmenopausal women, not only reduced inflammatory states but also led to favorable hormonal responses, as well as improvement in muscle integrity and nutritional benefits(7).

Dr. Dopheide JF and the research team at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz said, "a reduced inflammatory state might be achieved by regular walking exercise, possibly in a dimension proportionately to changes in walking distance"(8).

Herbal Turmeric, a Natural Prevention and Treatment of Crohn's disease, Studies Showed

Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease caused by the inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

The exact cause of Crohn's disease is not identified. However, some researchers suggested that people with the compromised immune system and genetic preposition are prone to the disease onset compared to people who do not

Most common symptoms of Crohn's disease are abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition.

If you are experiencing symptoms of severe abdominal pain accompanied by blood in the stool and persistent diarrhea, please check with your doctor right the way.

Risk factors of Crohn's disease include aging, family and person history, ethnicity, smoking and long-term use of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
.
Out of many risk factors that cause the onset of the condition, some researchers suggested that your risk of Crohn's disease is depending on where you live.

Dr. Pascal Michel wrote, "Crohn's disease (CD) is clinically expressed as a chronic affection of the gastrointestinal tract currently known to have a multifactorial etiology involving a complex pathophysiological host response modulated by genetic susceptibilities, demographic determinants, and environmental factors. With more than 20 cases per 100,000 person-years, the province of Quebec, Canada is among regions of the world with the highest reported occurrence of CD in relation to other places where comparable estimates are available".

And, "These findings suggest that known populational and regional factors derived through census information only explain a limited fraction of the geographical variation of CD incidence and lead to speculate that the effects of these factors may be incompletely captured (imperfect construction of proxy variables) or that other important factors remain unmeasured".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), researchers at the Grand Valley State University compared the effects of Remicade to curcumin for the treatment of the condition.

The review study includes the search in electronic databases (ProQuest Medical Library, CINAHL Complete, and PUBMED) to locate and identify articles to meet a predetermined set of inclusion criteria, including articles published after 2007 in human participants 18 years or older.

Compared to Remicade in reducing TNF-a, the protein associated with inflammation in adults with CD, curcumin induced a 55 points mean reduction in the Crohn's Disease Activity Index, reduced the expression of IL-1 and levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), associated with elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines in the colon, particularly in the reduced levels of TNF-a and PPMTase involved in the improvement of colorectal cancer outcomes.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "...Preliminary data would suggest using both would reduce LOR. Curcumin, even by itself, was found to be a cheap and safe way to reduce CD symptoms and inflammatory markers"

Furthermore, according to the study conducted by the Medical School of Marília in the search for articles associating curcuminoids and CD and UC on the database of MEDLINE-PubMed, curcumin demonstrated an intestinal protective effect on reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting the migration of neutrophils and inducible nitric oxide synthase in the intestine.

Moreover, curcumin also improved micro and macroscopic lesions in the gut, prevented apoptosis of intestinal cells and induced the restoration of immune reaction.

Dr. Cunha Neto F, after taking into account of co and confounders wrote, "The use of curcumin is cheap, efficient and associated with no side effects, and may become an alternative to the IBD treatment".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Regular Walking Reduces Symptoms and Early Onset of Osteoarthritis(OA) in Population of 50Plus

Regular physical activity has long been found to associate to the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but the regular walking contribution of health benefits of reduced risk of osteoarthritis in the younger and older elderly have been controversial.

Osteoarthritis (OA), a form of arthritis, is a condition or as a result of aging causes of wear and tear on a joint, affecting over 25 million people in the United States in alone. University of Porto Medical School indicated that one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), according to case definition, in the knee, hip and hand joints.

The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty of moving the joint or joints. The pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night and in the advanced diseases, the pain can occur even at rest(8). Today management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments(10).

Moderate physical activity and walking programs had a positive effect on the quality of life of elderly individuals with knee OA, a new study suggested(5), through reduction of pain and improvement of physical function(6).

According to Dr. Evcik D and Dr. Sonel B., simple home-based exercise therapy and a regular walking program are effective in treating the symptoms of OA(7).

In older other with the preexisted condition of hip/knee OA, PA may reduce the risk of hip/knee OA, especially among women with no association between hip/knee OA and low joint stress(1).

In support to the effectiveness of physical exercise without increasing the risk of hip/knee OA and joint stress, Dr. Hootman JM and colleagues at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, said, "The joint stress PA score was not associated with an increased risk of hip/knee OA. Also, among walkers and runners, there was no association between the frequency, pace, or weekly training mileage and hip/knee OA"(2).

In fact, the 4316 people originally interviewed, 216 eligible cases (66 men, 150 women) were identified (mean age 57.1) insisted, there was little evidence to suggest that increased levels of regular physical activity throughout life lead to an increased risk of knee OA later in life(3) with exception to those of overweight(4).

Indeed, regular walking at one own pace is associated with a reduced risk of hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA)(8). Exercise and sport may probably be also a preventive tool against osteoarthritis, due to its positive effect on weight, muscle strength and possibly synovial inflammation(9).

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Kills Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cells in Vivo and Vitro

Unlike general breast cancer which processes either receptors for estrogen or progesterone and/or receptors with a protein called HER2, triple-negative breast cancer is a form of breast cancer that does not share the aforementioned characteristics.

In other words, triple-negative breast cancer does not have receptors of estrogen or progesterone or genetic preposition.

More importantly, triple negative breast cancer was found to infect women under the age of 40 and women of African or Asian ancestry in the US, compared to breast cancer in the White.

Particularly, according to the epidemiological study, younger women and in women of African ancestry are susceptible to a higher risk of basal-like triple negative breast cancers.

Compared to the malignant nature, triple-negative and basal-like breast cancers are highly invasive which can grow and spread quickly to other tissues and organs through lymph and blood.

Also compared to other breast cancer, with decreased risk after 5 years, triple-negative breast cancers have a substantial higher recurrent rate within 5 years after treatment.

Triple negative breast cancer shares the symptoms similar to those of breast cancer and risk factor except in the form of the genetic preposition.

According to Dr. Shimelis H, the lead scientist in the joint study led by the Mayo Clinic, said, "Pathogenic variants in BRIP1, RAD51C, and TP53 were associated with moderate risk (odds ratio > 2) of TNBC. Similar trends were observed for the African American population. Pathogenic variants in these TNBC genes were detected in 12.0% (3.7% non-BRCA1/2) of all participants".

And, "Multigene hereditary cancer panel testing can identify women with an elevated risk of TNBC due to mutations in BARD1, BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, and RAD51D".

In other words, if you carry the mutated genes BARD1, BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, and RAD51D, you are at a higher risk of triple negative breast cancer.

In seeking a potential compound for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers reexamined the promising anticancer effects of novel C-substituted diindolylmethane (DIM) derivatives DIM-10 and DIM-14 in aggressive triple negative breast cancer (TNBC, MDA-MB-231) models.

In vitro studies, novel C-substituted diindolylmethane (DIM) derivatives DIM-10 and DIM-14 demonstrated strong anticancer effects.

NLC formulations. including DIM-10 and DIM-14 extended significant increase in oral bioavailability compared to poor permeability and poor oral bioavailability of DIM-10 and DIM-14 used alone in pharmacokinetic studies.

Futhermore, compared to DIM-10, DIM-10 used alone, the NLC formulation showed an increase in Cmax and AUC values by 4.73 and 11.19-folds.

Similar increased anti-aggressive triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) efficacy was also found in the DIM-14 NLC formulations.

In dogs, the DIM-10 NLC formulations showed an increase of 2.65 and 2.94-fold in Cmax and AUC, against triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) respectively.

Moreover, DIM-10 or DIM-14 NLC formulations demonstrated significant a reduction in tumor volumes TNBC models and treated animals.

Dr. Godugu C, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "NLC formulation of both DIM-10 and 14 is effective in TNBC models".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of triple negative breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Regular Walking Reduces Symptoms and Risk of Low Back Pain

Chronic back pain is a significant problem worldwide. According to statistic, Low back pain is a Musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs, affecting over 80% of the population in the US alone some points in their life. Chronic LBP (pain has persisted for longer than 3 months(5) prevalence in older adults was significantly higher than the 21-to-44-year age group

Regular physical activity has long been found to associate with the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but regular walking contribution of health benefits of low back pain in the younger and older elderly have been lacking, probably due to body height and weight and other parameters(1), such as psychosocial factors(4).As available evidence on the association between physical activity (i.e. occupational load and non-occupational physical activities) and low back pain (LBP)(3).

But according to the review of the 2583 initially identified articles, 121 articles analyzed conducted by Fédération hospitals-Universitaire de médecine physique et de réadaptation Montpellier-Nîmes, suggested, " Moderate but regular physical activity( included walking) helps to improve fitness and does not increase the risk of acute pain in chronic LBP patients"(2).
In fact, in a systematic review of studies using pedometers, Dr. Mansi S and colleagues at the University of Otago said, ".....strong evidence for the effectiveness of pedometer walking interventions in increasing PA levels for patients with MSDs", using 11 electronic databases up to 20 February 2014(7).
In support of the effect of exercise, including walking the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System insisted that exercise is an integral part of managing chronic back pain but to be effective requires that patients actively participate in the management process(6).

Does regular walking reduce risk of low back pain? the Cooper River Bridge Run Study said, "runners and walkers may have a lower relative risk for significant LBP" and " Prevalence of LBP at the time of survey completion was 13.6%"(9)in this population in comparison to the general statistic.

Indeed, walking 4 to 7 days per week is found to reduce the risk of LB disability onset by 50% to 80% on the older Black adults and 50% on older White adults(8), respectively.

Herbal Bilberry, A Natural Treatment for Peyronie's disease

Peyronie's disease is a rare condition caused by plaque, that forms inside the penis, leading to a bent erect penis, depending on where the plaque is located.

Patients with Peyronie's disease has been found to affect sexual desire due to a physical condition associated with painful sexual intercourse and erectile dysfunction.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of Peyronie's disease. However, according to the epidemiological studies, researchers suggested that injury that causes bleeding inside the penis may induce the built-up of scars, particularly in men with the genetic preposition of certain genes.

Most cases of pain in Peyronie’s disease are mild and often do not require treatment, however, over counter medicine may be needed occasionally.

Believe or not, most mild cases of men with Peyronie's disease do not require treatment as the condition has been found to go away within a year. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the scar tissues in the penis that cause the condition.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of Peyronie's disease investigated various antioxidants, including bilberry in PD treatment with significantly increase the likelihood of therapeutic success.

By comparing the effects of silymarin, ginkgo biloba, vitamin E, bilberry, topical diclofenac sodium, and pentoxifylline (PTX) in patients with PD, researchers found that by administration of a single oral antioxidant; two oral antioxidants; three oral antioxidants; five oral antioxidants + local diclofenac; and five oral antioxidants + local diclofenac + PTX achieve better results when combining more than one agent.

According to the tested assays, the combination of more than a single compound reduced the symptoms in patients with PD, including the improvement and disappearance of penile pain; percentage of reduction in the volume of penile plaque; reduction in penile curvature; recovery of erectile function in patients with erectile dysfunction; increase in the International Index of Erectile Function score; and reduction of psychosexual impact.

Particularly, treatment of combined therapy including oral treatment with more than one antioxidant is greater when topical use of diclofenac gel and perilesional injection of PTX, compared to those of single conventional medicine.

In other words, combined natural or dietary antioxidants such as bilberry into the diet of patients with PD are more effective in inhibiting the symptoms compared to the use alone of any single ingredient therapy.

The final outcome of 6 months of treatment showed that combined antioxidant therapy is effective in treating PD.

Dr. Paulis G, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account wrote in the final report, " Although several articles have already been published reporting the effectiveness of combined treatment in PD, this is the first study clearly proving how, as the number of substances used in treatment rises, a proportionally greater therapeutic effect is achieved."

Taken altogether, bilberry combined with other antioxidants or conventional medicines may be considered function remedies for the treatment of Peyronie's disease (PD), pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric, A Natural And Potential Treatment of Chagas Heart Disease

Chagas disease (CD) is a medical condition caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi.

According to the statistics, approximately 6 million people worldwide are living Chagas disease. The majority of patients reside in Mexico, Central America, and South America,

Chagas heart disease can be classified into
* Acute Chagas heart disease is characterized by the inflammation of the heart, gastrointestinal tract (mainly esophagus and colon), meninges, and central and peripheral nervous tissues. Untreated symptomatic patients in this phase may face a roughly 1% chance of death in the acute period, usually the result of severe myocarditis or meningoencephalitis

* The indeterminate form of Chagas heart disease is characterized by small foci of mild chronic myocarditis, with interstitial edema, early fibrosis, and infiltration by lymphocytes, macrophages, and plasma cells. Most patients with the indeterminate form will progress to the chronic form of Chagas heart disease such as dilated cardiomyopathy, at a rate of 1.85% to 7% annually.

* The chronic form of Chagas heart disease is characterized by cardiomegaly and increased cardiac mass, thinning of the ventricular walls, and aneurysmal lesions in various regions of the LV and right ventricle (RV).

Dr. Edimar Alcides Bocchi, the lead scientist in the treatment of Chagas heart disease wrote, "Pharmacological treatment and antiarrhythmic therapy for ChHD is mostly based on results for other etiologies. Heart transplantation is an established, valuable therapeutic option in refractory ChHD".

And, "Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators are indicated for the prevention of secondary sudden cardiac death. Specific etiological treatments should be revisited and reserved for select patients. Understanding and management of ChHD need improvement, including the development of randomized trials".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of Chagas heart disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi., researchers examined the anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties of curcumin (Cur).

The study included oral therapy with Cur on T. cruzi-mediated cardio-vasculopathy in acutely infected mice and in vitro, the response of parasite-infected human microvascular endothelial cells treated with this phytochemical.

According to the tested assays, oral Cur therapy showed a reduced inflammatory cell infiltration of myocardial arteries without lowering parasite levels in the tested infected mice.

Furthermore, mice treated with Cur showed significantly decreased vessel inflammation scores (p < 0.001), vascular permeabilities compared to mice treated with the phosphate-buffered saline-receiving group.

Moreover, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and ET-1 secretion involved in vascular constriction was also inhibited by the treatment of Cur.

Additionally, proteins and signaling pathways that promote the generation of inflammatory agents also inhibited by the injection of Cur.

In other words, curcumin (Cur) exerted the anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties against parasite-induced the onset of Chagas heart disease.

Based on the findings researchers wrote, "These findings identify new perspectives for exploring the potential of Cur-based interventions to ameliorate Chagas heart disease".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Chagas heart disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
