Green Tea, Reduced risk of Early onset and Progression of Cognitive Impairment

Green tea injection is associated with a reduced risk of age-related cognitive decline, a recent study postulated.

Cognitive impairment is a condition of the decline of memory and thinking skills due to aging considered as an early sign of neurodegenerative diseases.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. Other study (Japanese residents aged >60 years from Nakajima, Japan (the Nakajima Project) of 723 participants with normal cognitive function at a baseline survey (2007-2008), the 490 completed the follow up survey in 2011-2013, suggested that incidence of dementia and cognitive impairment are lower among individuals who consumed green tea 1-6 days per week compared with individuals who did not consume green tea at all.

Additionally, according to the double-blind, randomized controlled study of 39 nursing home residents with cognitive dysfunction (four men, 29 women) divided into two groups either with
consumption of 2 g/day of green tea powder (containing 220.2 mg of catechins) or placebo powder (containing 0.0 mg of catechins), the green tea-treated group showed a significantly reduced cognitive dysfunction in 3 months follow up in compared to placebo.

The efficacy of green tea in decreased progression of cognitive impairment in the short term may be attributed to ameliorated oxidative stress and levels of low-density lipoprotein.

Taking together, Green tea may process potential in reduced risk of early onset and progression of cognitive decline in the aging population, but long term and large amount of injection should be taken with care.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "These results suggest that such extracts could have significant beneficial effects in vascular disease".

Turmeric Protects the Kidney Against Renal Dysfunction

Renal protection is strategies that protect the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.

Kidneys, a pair of the bean-shaped organ in the human body only filters out blood but also balances the body fluids by eliminating them and remove them through urinary secretion.

Tetrahydrocurcumin also suppressed the cisplatin-treated rat in inducing overexpression of the creatinine clearance levels, an indication of kidney dysfunction.

Proinflammatory protein associated with increased oxidative stress in the kidney caused by cancer medicine was also inhibited by tetrahydrocurcumin administration during the experiment.

After taking into account co and confounders, the researcher wrote, "collectively provide therapeutic evidence that tetrahydrocurcumin ameliorates renal damage by regulating inflammation and apoptosis".

Green Tea, the Best Anti Asthma Functional Whole Food

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

According to the joint study lead by the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Kaempferol (3,5,7-trihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one), a flavonoid found in green tea exhibited anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory effects against various diseases, including asthma.



The study also demonstrated the function of Kaempferol in reduced oxidative stress through scavenging free radicals and superoxide radicals effects as well as preserving the activity of various anti-oxidant enzymes in attenuated production of proinflammatory cytokines.

In fact, evidence from in vitro and in vivo assays postulated that aqueous fraction of green tea also exerted anti-asthmatic signaling activity in the ovalbumin-induced asthmatic model.

Furthermore, in the study of mice induced asthma by an ovalbumin, aqueous extract of green tea displayed a potent anti-asthmatic activity by increasing the expression level of tumor necrosis factor-beta, (a protein involved production of one of the inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase) and interferon-gamma in displacement of immune function against microbial infection and decreased expression of anti-asthmatic cytokines in the lung.


More importantly, green tea alleviated asthmatic symptoms by increasing the expression of Th1 cell-in regulated the production of interferon-gamma and interleukin (IL)-2, proinflammatory cytokines and tumor necrosis factor.

Promisingly, another green tea constituent, namely Chafuroside A (CFA), water-soluble flavone C-glycoside, in experimental asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-rat model, treatment with Chafuroside A at 0.5mg/kg, 1.0mg/kg could attenuate inflammatory symptoms and ameliorate antigen-induced airway inflammation, respectively.


Dr, Onoue S, the lead author in the above study said, " A self-assembled micellar (SAM) formulation might be an efficacious approach for enhancing the therapeutic potential of CFA for treatment of inflammatory diseases".

Unfortunately, there are few reports suggested that green tea-induced asthma in tea-sensitive patients, as epigallocatechin gallate induced histamine release through IgE-mediated response.


Taking together, there is no doubt that green tea may be considered as a functional food for prevention and treatment of asthma, but people with tea sensitive syndrome should avoid drinking green tea unless with approval of related field specialist.

A. The Japanese population
Japan, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea, and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south(c). According to Moriyama, Japanese women and men live longer and healthier than everyone else on Earth, it may be a result of healthier Japanese diet and lifestyle. According to the World Health Organization, the Japanese have an average of 75 years healthy living with disability-free, it may be due to average soy intake 10 to 70 times higher than in Western people(d)(e).
A.2. Soy and Risk of Breast cancer in Japanese Population
Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is cancer started in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk. There are also rare cases that breast cancer started in other areas of the breast. In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the life time of a woman is 1/8.
The searching of the keyword in PubMed with keywords, soy and breast cancer in Japanese women, found 15 related studies.
Epidemiologic evidence suggesting a high intake of soy in the Japanese population is associated to reduce risk of breast cancer(1) and regular consumption of probiotic beverage and isoflavones since adolescence was inversely associated with the incidence of breast cancer in Japanese women(2)(2a).

The study in the testing of oral administration of IF-rich tablet (20 and 40 mg/day) on climacteric women, showed the product not only reduced risk of breast cancer but also improved of bone density, hypertension, and climacteric symptoms, cardiovascular diseases, gynecological problems and possible immune potentiation(3)

Japanese women have a lower incidence of and mortality from breast cancer, compared to Caucasians, it may be a result of large amount intake soy protein and isoflavones, as high dietary intake of phytoestrogens, mainly in the form of soy products, can produce circulating levels of phytoestrogens that are known experimentally to have oestrogenic effects(4).

According to the Loma Linda University, Asian population consumes as much as 25 g of soy protein or 100 mg of isoflavones per day(5).
Epidemiological Western studies have linked levels of Genistein and daidzein in stimulating breast tumor growth and antagonize the effects of tamoxifen have been inclusive. Some researchers suggested that women with current or past breast cancer should be aware of the risks of potential tumor growth when taking soy products(6).

In the Japanese population, the serum of isoflavones and insulin levels were not associated with breast cancer risk, in a case-control study of 63 histologically confirmed breast cancer patients and 76 controls, of serum isoflavone, insulin and adiponectin levels with breast cancer risk(7).

The review of Soy for breast cancer survivors also rejected the above claim of adult consumption of soy affecting the risk of developing breast cancer or that soy consumption affects the survival of breast cancer patients(8). Indeed, in Japanese study in testing the serum concentrations of genistein and daidzein, showed urinary excretion in 10 women and 9 men who consumed a typical low-fat diet with much rice and soy products, fish, and vegetables, in a rural village south of Kyoto, Japan, indicated a co-related to isoflavonoids intake and serum concentrations of genistein and daidzein and suggested that these may be a result of low mortality in breast and prostate cancer of Japanese women and men, respectively(9). In fact, tofu is found to be associated with the serum concentrations of genistein and daidzein but the fermented product, such as miso showed a slight association with serum concentrations of these phytoestrogens with serum concentrations of equol showed associated with dietary intake of tofu and miso soup(10).

Soymilk, a flavored drink on breakfast in the Asian diet, when combined with combination with probiotic Lactobacillus casei Shirota (LcS) also showed to prevent the development of mammary tumors through suppression of tumor growth and might be a beneficial dietary style for breast cancer prevention(11). Intake of soy combined with seaweed in equol producers, showed seaweed favorably alters estrogen and phytoestrogen metabolism and these changes likely include modulation of colonic bacteria, in healthy postmenopausal women(12). In premenopausal Japanese women study with randomly assigned to receive either a soymilk-supplemented diet (n = 31) or a normal (control) diet (n = 29), involved three consecutive menstrual cycles showed the estrone and estradiol levels were decreased by 23% and 27%, respectively, in the soymilk-supplemented group but insisted that larger studies will be required to confirm the ability of soy products to reduce serum estrogen levels(12a). Another study in 50 healthy premenopausal Japanese women, also showed a similar result as blood samples drawn from each subject on Days 11 and 22 of her menstrual cycle, suggested that the consumption of soy products lowers the risk of developing breast cancer risk in modifying estrogen metabolism(12b).

In postmenopausal Japanese women, according to the study from the Takayama, with participants members aged 35 years or older in 1992 with follow-up was conducted from the time of the baseline study (September 1, 1992) to the end of March 2008, concluded that soy and isoflavone intakes may have a protective effect on postmenopausal breast cancer. Risks of breast cancer were decreased among women with a moderate intake of soy and isoflavone(13).

In a total of 678 breast cancer cases and 3,390 age- and menopausal status-matched noncancer controls, soy showed a protective effect against breast cancer risk differs by receptor status, including with ER-positive (ER+) and HER2-negative (HER2-)(14). Genistein a major component of soybean isoflavone, has been found to induce breast cancer in some Western study, also exerted its anti-breast cancer preventive effect in a breast cancer cell overexpressing HER-2, as genistein enhances necrotic-like cell death of the breast cancer cells through the inactivation of the HER-2 receptor and Akt which plays a key role in multiple cellular processes in combined with chemotherapeutic agent (15).

Unfortunately, report on a Japan Collaborative Cohort (JACC) Study. From 1988 to 1990, 30,454 women aged 40-79 years, completed a questionnaire on diet and other lifestyle features, suggested that consumption of soy food has no protective effects against breast cancer, but insisted that further large-scale investigations eliciting genetic factors may clarify different roles of various soybean-ingredient foods on the risk of breast cancer(16).

Nagata C. the protective risk against breast cancer only found in Asian but not Western populations with the intake of soy, may be due to consuming levels of soy typical in Asian diets. Researchers should also take account of the amount of soy isoflavones consumed, the form and food source of isoflavones, the timing of isoflavone exposure, estrogen receptor status of tumors, and equol-producer status and hormonal profile of individuals. These factors might explain the heterogeneity of results from studies(17).

In Eastern countries, such as Japan, the incidence of breast cancer is approximately one-third that of Western countries whilst their high dietary intake of phytoestrogens, mainly in the form of soy products, can produce circulating levels of phytoestrogens that are known experimentally to have oestrogenic effects. The actions of phytoestrogens on estrogen receptors and key enzymes that convert androgens to estrogens in relation to the growth of breast cancer cells. In addition, it compares the experimental and epidemiological evidence pertinent to the potential beneficial or harmful effects of phytoestrogens in relation to the incidence/progression of breast cancer and their efficacy as natural alternatives to conventional HRT"(18).

Green Tea Reduce Symptoms Expression and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body after the ages of 40 and causing the diminished quality of life of many elders.

In the investigation of the anti-inflammatory activity of green versus black tea aqueous extract in a rat model with orally/daily distilled water as placebo, indomethacin (1.0 mg/kg body weight; a non-steroidal/anti-inflammatory drug), or tea aqueous extracts (for 28 or 14 consecutive days administrated from day 0 or 14 of arthritis induction, respectively), group treated with high dose of GTE (from day 0) significantly alleviated (P < 0.05-0.001) the progression and all complications induced by rheumatoid arthritis in compared placebo.


More importantly, Researchers also found that the expression of anti-arthritic activity of the high dose of GTE (from day 0) mediated by significantly decreasing the systemic production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the expression of chemokine receptor-5, a protein in activated immune activities in the in synovial tissues, was comparable (P > 0.05) with that of indomethacin (12.9-53.8 vs. 9.5-48.4%, respectively).
Furthermore, the anti-arthritic potency of tea aqueous extracts was dosed dependent in the order of high dose of GTE > low dose of GTE ≥ high dose of BTE > low dose of BTE.

Other study suggested that green tea extract in reduced symptoms and risk of complication probably are the result in regulating chemokine(a family of cytokines secreted by cells) production in an immune reaction and chemokine receptor expression in interaction with proinflammatory cytokines of human RA synovial fibroblasts in rat adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA).

Taking together, green tea nay be served as a functional food to reduce symptoms and risk of complication for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
