Turmeric, the Anti Hyperlipidemia Herbal Remedy

Hyperlipidemia or high blood cholesterol is a condition that causes abnormally high levels of lipids in the blood.

Cholesterol plays an essential role in moderate amount in orchestrating the production of steroid hormone and vitamin D, building strong cell walls and aiding the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and fluids.

Cholesterol can either be produced by the liver or consumed form the food sources. There are 2 types of cholesterol
*The high-density lipoprotein is also known as "good" cholesterol processes a function to return cholesterol to the liver.

* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in moderate amount.

In a healthy individual, the bad cholesterol is returned to the liver. However, overexpression of "bad" cholesterol due to the consumption of a high-fat diet and reduced levels of "good" cholesterol can induce an unhealthy ratio of bad and good cholesterol, leading to bad cholesterol remaining in the bloodstream, a cause of hyperlipidemia.

Overexpression of bad cholesterol has been found to facilitate the plaque accumulated in the arterial wall, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL in the US.

Conventionally, hyperlipidemia is treated by simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin, and rosuvastatin. However, holistically, by a change of diet and daily moderate exercise, you may control the condition without medication.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers investigated the effects of curcumin on hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis in high-fructose-fed Wistar rats.

Rat groups selected to the study were divided into four groups with 10 rats in each group with two groups fed with standard rodent diet with or without plus curcumin (200 mg/kg body weight) and the other two with 60% high-fructose diet with or without curcumin (200 mg/kg body weight)for 10 weeks.

According to the results of differentiation, co-administration of curcumin reduced body weight, liver weight, adipose weight, plasma levels of TAG, VLDL-C associated with the onset of hyperlipidemia compared to the untreated group.

Additionally, curcumin also increased the levels of lipid ratios in favors of the HDL-C by increasing the levels of HDL-C (28.4 ± 4.5 mg/dL) in fructose-fed rats compared to standard rodent diet rats.

The protein expression of LXR-α (43%) and SREBP1c (59%) associated with inflammation and activation of cholesterol in the liver were also decreased by the injection curcumin.

More importantly, curcumin suppressed the expression of lipogenic enzymes associated with lipid metabolism and genes involved in cholesterol production in rats fed with a high-fructose diet.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Curcumin prevented the high-fructose induced hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cucumber's Cucurbitacin B (CuB) Might Process Anti Diabetes Potency

Diabetes is a medical condition caused by not insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream.

In other words, diabetes is a condition associated with the inability of the body to use insulin properly.

Most cases of insulin insufficiency in the bloodstream in diabetes are either caused by the gradual died-off of the pancreas beta cells or insulin receptors clogged-up by fat and cholesterol.

Hallmarks of diabetes are hyperglycemia and insulin resistance.

According to the statistics, in 2017, 7.3% of Canadians aged 12 and older (roughly 2.3 million people) reported being diagnosed with diabetes

Most common causes of diabetes are
* Metabolic syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose
associated with an increased risk of diabetes.

* Gestational diabetes
High blood glucose of pregnant women has been found to increase the risk of diabetes in later life.

* Prediabetes
Most cases of prediabetes are caused by unhealthy diets with high saturated fat, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking. Prediabetes is a high-risk state for diabetes, especially in patients who remain with prediabetes despite intensive lifestyle intervention.

* Damage to the Pancreas causes the gradual and irreversible loss of beta cells that reduce the production of insulin

* Influenza a viruses
Influenza A virus is a common cause of pancreatitis in naturally and experimentally infected animals.
However, recently, researchers found that influenza virus infection may play a role as a causative agent of pancreatitis and diabetes in humans.

* * Head trauma
Head trauma is considered a possible cause of central diabetes insipidus with symptoms of failure to concentrate urine, an increase in urine specific gravity.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural compound which processes anti-diabetes property, researchers investigated the effect of different fractions of Cucumis prophetarum on antidiabetic and antioxidant activity.

The study was carried out to examine the anti-diabetes and antioxidants of the different doses of aqueous crude extract (CE) of C. prophetarum fruits fractionated into water-soluble fraction 1 (F1), chloroform fraction 2 (F2), basic fraction 3 (F3), and neutral fraction 4 (F4) by acid-base extraction,

Based on the chemical analysis,
* F1 exhibited effective antidiabetic activity with an IC50 value of 20.6 and 59.9 µg/mL.

* According to α-amylase assay, the anti-diabetes activity was found in the decreasing order of CE > F4 > F3 > F2.

* According to the DPPH assay, F1 (IC50 = 73 µg/mL) showed better reducing ability than CE >F4 >F2 > F3 (IC50 = 78-272 µg/mL

* Furthermore, according to the SO and metal chelation assays, F1 showed the highest activity anti-diabetes at the IC50 = 101 and 147 µg/mL.
These results strongly suggested that F1 possesses a potent antidiabetic compared to other fractions, in vitro.

In other words, all ingredients in cucumbers work synergistically to exhibit the anti-diabetes activity compared to a single compound.

Taken altogether, cucumber may be used for the treatment of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea And Its Bioactive Polyphenols in Reduced Risk, Progression of Fibromyalgia,Caused by Sleep Disturbance

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced onset, progression and treatment of fibromyalgia caused by sleep disturbance, some scientists suggested.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain affecting over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people in the US alone.

In the study of sleep disturbance causable fibromyalgia, Dr. Choy EH suggested that patients with fibromyalgia demonstrated a reduced short-wave sleep and abnormal α-rhythms, suggestive of wakefulness during non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep in compared to the healthy individuals according to the observation of polysomnography.

Furthermore, in healthy participants, the study indicated that sleep deprivation can also cause fibromyalgia-like symptoms such as myalgia, tenderness, and fatigue and suggested that sleep dysfunction might be not only a consequence of pain.

These results showed strong correlated conditions of sleep disturbance and initiation of chronic fibromyalgia if sleep disorders are left untreated for a prolonged period of time.

Moreover, according to the presentation, long time effect of sleep disturbance may influence alter the pathophysiology of the central nervous system in abnormal pain processing and central sensitization, according to the observation of the neuroimaging of patients with fibromyalgia neural activation in compared to a lower pressure-pain threshold in healthy age-matched and gender-matched individuals.

After taking into account to other confounders, researchers said, " improving sleep quality can reduce pain and fatigue, further supporting the hypothesis that sleep dysfunction is a pathogenic stimulus of fibromyalgia".

Green tea, bioactive polyphenols (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in the evaluation of the the chick brain under an acute stressful condition in facilitated sleep disturbance, researchers found that EGCG attenuates stress behavior with special reference to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter with function in sending chemical messages through the brain and the nervous system, and involving in regulating communication between brain cells in stress environment.

Deficiency is associated with many nervous conditions, including depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

Application of EGCG of doses of 50, 100 and 200 microg, intracerebroventricularly exerted a profound effect in suppressed the vocalization which normally occurs during social separation stress.

This illustration truly suggested that EGCG reduced the time spent in active wakefulness and induced sleep-like behavior in a dose-dependent manner.

Furthermore, under influence and presence of the GABAA receptor antagonist picrotoxin but not by the GABAB receptor antagonist CGP 54626 (3-N-(1-(3,4-chlorophenyl)ethylamino)-2-hydroxypropyl cyclohexyl methyl phosphinic acid hydrochloride), a antidote in poisoning by CNS depressants, the effect of green tea EGCG is significantly decreased in attenuated the production of hormone corticosterone release under social separation stress.

This interaction opinionated that EGCG induced sedation and hypnosis in reduced stress hormone production in precipitated sleep distance probably though GABAA receptors in moderated an acute stress response.

Some researchers suggested that green tea improved symptoms of fibromyalgia by normalizing the levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) when came under stress, may have a therapeutic effect in reduced anxiety by relaxing the muscles and the brain. through increased production of dopamines, serotonin, and alpha waves within the brain in orchestrated the sleep pattern.

These improvements were associated with the interaction of the brain with chemical compounds found in green tea Caffeine and L-theanine, suggested by the author.

Taken together, the information findings suggested that green tea and its bioactive polyphenols EGCG and L-theanine may be considered as a functional food for reduced risk, progression, and treatment of fibromyalgia caused by a sleep disorder. However, the intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Carotenoids Protects the Eyes of Elderly Against Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration is a condition caused by the deterioration of the small central portion of the retina, known as the macula

Macular degeneration happened mostly in adults over 60, is one of the major cause of vision loss.

The exact causes of macular degeneration are not identified. As of today, researchers cannot explain why some elderly are susceptible to macular degeneration while others do not.

However, researchers do know that certain risk factors have been found epidemiologically to induce the risk of macular degeneration including aging, the disease has been found most commonly in people over 50, family history and genetics, race, macular degeneration is more common in Caucasians.

Smoking, obesity and medical condition such as cardiovascular disease are also associated with a higher risk of macular degeneration

There are 2 forms of macular degeneration found in the elderly
* The dry form is caused by the presence of yellow deposits, called drusen under the retina, in the macula. However, the elderly with increased was not at a higher risk of macular degeneration.

* The wet form is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels from the choroid, the vascular layer of the eye, underneath the retina.

Compared to the loss of vision of 10% of patients induced by the wet form, most patients of macular degeneration have the dry form which has been found to cause loss of some central vision.

Some researchers suggested that macular degeneration may also be caused by an unhealthy diet. Dr. Martha P. Montgomery wrote, "A 97-item Block food frequency questionnaire was used to gather diet information, and overall diet quality was measured using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)".

And, "Participants in the highest quartile of diet quality had significantly reduced odds of AMD according to the AHEI score (0.54, 95% confidence interval 0.30 – 0.99) and non-significantly reduced odds of AMD according to the HEI (0.75, 0.41 – 1.38). Odds of AMD were also 51% lower in the highest quartile of fish intake compared to the lowest quartile (odds ratio = 0.49, 0.26 – 0.90)".

These results strongly suggested the risk of AMD is many folds higher in people who follow the Western diet compared to those who follow the Oriental diet.
Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), researchers examined the beneficial role for carotenoids in the prevention of AMD.

Epidemiologically, in a case-control study by comparing the risk AMD in subjects with late AMD, exudative AMD, and retinal pigment abnormalities with the presence of drusen, and an equal number of control subjects,

*Administration of lutein and zeaxanthin induced serum concentrations were not associated with the risk of AMD.

* Consumption of food sources of lutein and zeaxanthin (carotenoids) was associated with reducing the risk of macular degeneration.

* People with higher levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in the blood have a lower risk of AMD.

However, the reduced risk of lutein and zeaxanthin for AMD when levels of the carotenoids are elevated in the serum or diet was not consistent.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Until scientifically sound knowledge is available we recommend for patients judged to be at risk for AMD to alter their diet to more dark green leafy vegetables, wear UV protective lenses and a hat when outdoors".

Taken altogether, carotenoids, particularly lutein and zeaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin Balances the Ratio of Free Radicals and Antioxidants Levels

Oxidative stress is a medical condition caused by a long-term imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, overexpression of free radicals and depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body are the most common cause of oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress occurs when the abundant and unstable free radicals start a chain reaction by stealing or donating their unpaired electrons in the outermost ring to stable atoms, leading to a cascade that cannot be stopped until all electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidant.

Oxidative stress is dealy to oxidized protein, lipid and cause cell damage that have been linking to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Certain risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking, an unhealthy diet with fewer fruits and vegetables, certain medical conditions such as chronic inflammatory disease and environmental factors such as pollution and radiation have linked to the onset of oxidative stress.

Believe it or not, people with a weakened immune system are more prone to oxidative stress compared to a healthy individual. Therefore, intake of antioxidants from the dietary sources may be necessary.

Dr. JA Knight in the investigation of free radicals, antioxidants, and immune system wrote, " oxidative stress may be detrimental in acquired immunity by activation of nuclear factor kappa B, which governs gene expression involving various cytokines, chemokines, and cell adhesion molecules, among others"

And "antioxidant supplementation essentially reverses several age-associated immune deficiencies, resulting in increased levels of interleukin-2, elevated numbers of total lymphocytes and T-cell subsets, enhanced mitogen responsiveness, increased killer cell activity, augmented antibody response to antigen stimulation, decreased lipid peroxidation, and decreased prostaglandin synthesis".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, scientists investigated the effects of garlic active compounds, diallyl disulfide (DADS), diallyl sulfide (DAS) and alliin against Dengue virus (DENV).

Based on the tested assays, alliin reduced inflammation and affected the oxidative stress response by blocking the immune system response involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines against the oxidative stress.

Furthermore, in cancer cells, pretreatment of alliin exerted a toxic effect on several mammalian cells in vitro in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, alliin demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells by killing them before they can reproduce.

More precisely, alliin-induced cancer cell apoptosis by increasing caspase-3 expression, DNA fragmentation, cell cycle arrest, ROS generation, GSH depletion.

The findings suggested that alliin modulated oxidative stress (the production of antioxidant and free radicals) depending on the body needs without causing harm to the healthy cells.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bilberry Protects the Stomach Against Gastric Ulcer, Studies Say

Gastric, stomach ulcer is an oval sore found on the lining of the stomach.

A gastric ulcer is one of the most common types of peptic ulcer disease which affects both the stomach and small intestines.

According to the epidemiological studies, gastric ulcer is caused either by the infection of bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) or long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin.

Most common symptoms are burning sensation or pain in the stomach. Most patients with gastric ulcer have pain that intensifies on empty stomach, depending on the severity of the condition.

Some patients with gastric ulcer also experience persistent dull pain in the stomach, unintended weight loss, nausea or vomiting and bloating and acid reflux.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of a gastric ulcer.

Conventionally, most cases of gastric ulcer can be treated successfully depending on the cause, including medicine or surgery if the medicine failed.

Out of many risk factors that cause a gastric ulcer, some researchers suggested there is a correlation between obesity and gastritis as well as gastric ulcers.

Dr. Nadia B. Pietrzykowska said, "Excess body weight has been linked to various abdominal ailments. These may include abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea or constipation".

And, "Scientific studies are also increasingly reporting a correlation between obesity and gastritis as well as gastric ulcers. A recent, large study that specifically focused on analyzing gastric and duodenal ulcers confirmed that excess weight predisposed individuals to gastric ulcers when compared to their normal weight counterparts".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the testing of the effect of Vaccinium myrtillus L. anthocyanoside (VMA) used as a folk medicine to treat diseases related to gastric ulcers in northern Europe, researchers investigated the protective effects of VMA on gastric mucosal damage in a murine gastric ulcer model.

During the experiment, oral administration of VMA (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg) significantly protected gastric mucosa against HCl/ethanol-induced gastric ulcers.

VMA protected the stomach by inhibiting lipid peroxide levels in a concentration-dependent manner and exhibiting the high scavenging activity against the superoxide anion radical (·O(2) (-) ) and the hydroxyl radical (·OH).

The antioxidant activity in VMA was found to be attributed by the presence of anthocyanidins and delphinidin.

Based on the findings, Dr. Ogawa K, the lead scientist said, "These findings indicate that the protective effects of VMA on HCl/ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury may be partially due to the antiperoxidative effects of anthocyanidins".

In order to provide more information about VMA gastric protective effects, researchers examined the antiulcer effects of 3,5,7-trihydroxy-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1-benzopyrylium chloride (IdB 1027,

an anthocyanidin from Vaccinium myrtillus) in various experimental models

Orally, IdB 1027 inhibited all parameters associated with the onset of gastric ulcerations including anti-inflammatory drugs, ethanol, reserpine, histamine and duodenal ulceration induced by mercaptamine.

Furthermore, IdB 1027 also protected the stomach against chronic gastric ulcers induced by acetic acid.

Moreover, IdB 1027 in rat model did not affect gastric secretion in pylorus-ligated rats and increased gastric mucus in normal animals both in the absence and in the presence of indomethacin treatment.

In other words, IdB 1027 possessed a promising antiulcer activity, probably by potentiating the defensive barriers of the gastrointestinal mucosa.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea in Ameliorating the Onset, Progression and Treatment of Juvenile Arthritis

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced prevalence, progression and treatment of juvenile arthritis, some scientists suggested.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Juvenile arthritis is an inflammatory disease affecting the synovium in children aged 16 or younger.

According to the statistic, the most common form of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), affects over 50,000 children in the United States alone.

In the investigation of the effect of green tea extract on the oxidative state of the liver and brain of adjuvant-induced arthritic rats, a model for human rheumatoid arthritis with daily doses of 250 mg kg(-1) (59.8 mg catechins per kg) for 23 days, researchers at the State University of Maringá, found that treatment group expressed a significant activity in reduced the protein and lipid damage in liver, brain, and plasma, caused by ROS expression in induction of oxidation which have been found to associated to the progression of arthritis.

Injection of green tea extract also enhanced the overexpression of antioxidant defenses, found in low levels in patients with arthritis through restoration of the glutathione (GSH) with important function in preventing damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species and protein thiol levels in reduced cellular oxidation through chelative and detoxified activities and improved the natural antioxidant enzymes, produced by the body.

Furthermore, green tea extract also inhibited the levels of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, which is increased in the liver, one of major risk factor for the development of arthritis.

These results suggested that the application of green tea exerted a significantly profound effect on the liver and brain of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis through reduced overexpression of oxidative stress in precipitated injury to lipids and proteins.

Some researchers suggested that by modifying the metabolic function in lipid and protein, green tea extract exhibited a strong protective effect in reduced the symptoms and progression of arthritis.

According to the study of University of Health System of green tea effect in patient with rheumatoid
arthritis, injection of green tea extract demonstrated a therapeutic effect in patients synovial fibroblast
of the lining of the tissue which surround the capsule of the joint by inhibited the production of IL-1B, a prototypic proinflammatory cytokines in response to acute and chronic inflammation. Overexpression of IL-1B is associated in contribution of joint damage.

Interestingly, in the study of adolescent male Wistar rats 12-week exposure to Cd and Pb (7mg Cd and 50mg Pb in 1kg of the diet randomly assigned to 12 to each group, as positive control received without Cd, Pb and teas, a negative control group received Cd and Pb, and groups supplemented additionally with green (GT), black (BT), red (RT), and white tea (WT), researchers indicated that application of tea significant inhibits the decreased levels of the geometric(shape) and densitometric(density) parameters and total thickness of articular cartilage caused by Cd and Pb in compared to the negative control group.

Tea injection group also displayed a huge improvement in mechanical endurance, growth plate thickness, and trabecular histomorphometry depending on the tea type.

Due to limitation of the study, Dr. Tomaszewska E, the lead researcher said, " It is difficult to indicate which tea has the best protective effects on bone and hyaline cartilage against heavy metal action".

More importantly, in the examine some major factors in contributed to the juvenile arthritis, green tea rich in catechins (Healthy green tea) in animal study restored these biomarkers of cytokine genes (IL-1A, IL-2, IFN-alpha, FGF-alpha, TNF-alpha) to near-normal levels, thus preventing or attenuating the development of a certain type of inflammatory arthritis.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered as a functional food for reduced early-onset, progression and combined with standard therapy for the treatment of juvenile and adult arthritis. However, the intake of green tea supplement should be taken with exceptional care as acute liver toxicity has been reported in numbers of medical literature.
