Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of arthritis, some scientists suggested.
Arthritis is a chronic condition characterized by painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints.
According to statistic, arthritis is the common autoimmune disorder affected over 50 million worldwide.
According to the College of Pharmacy, green tea epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in preclinical studies displayed a significant effect in the treatment of arthritic disease.
In vitro, the application of green tea extract EGCG demonstrated activities in cartilage-preserving and chondroprotective action through reduced expression of proinflammatory IL-1β, TNFα, and IL-6
and modulated extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover induced changes of the biomechanical environment of chondrocytes and accelerate the degradation of cartilage as well as driving the progression of the disease in the presence of inflammation.
Normal extracellular matrix (ECM) is a composed collagen type II with function to provide tensile support for the tissue.
Further analysis in the expression of proinflammatory factors researchers found that the overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1 and IL-6 were associated correlatively in knee joints in arthritis and inhibition of IL-1 and IL-6 by green tea EGCG IL-1 showed to reduce joint damage.
Some researchers also suggested that Interleukin 1 (IL-1) is a crucial mediator of the inflammatory response, playing an important part in the body's natural responses and the development of pathological conditions leading to chronic inflammation.
In the expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNFα, cachexin, or cachectin), application of green tea inhibited the levels of TNFα in the induction of synovial fibroblast cytotoxicity.
Interestingly, in the study to evaluate the possible effects of the administration of green tea extract on the oxidative state of the liver and brain of adjuvant-induced arthritic rats, researchers indicated that green tea daily doses of 250 mg kg(-1) (59.8 mg catechins per kg) for 23 days displays a strong effect in decreased symptoms of arthritis by ameliorated diminutions in protein and lipid damage in liver, brain and plasma, through antioxidant effect in reduced levels of ROS in stimulated free radical chain reaction to initiate production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to precipitate chronic diseases.
Rats treated with green tea EGCG also showed a significant improvement in restored natural antioxidant glutathione (GSH) and protein thiol levels produced by the body, by exhibiting the activities of the antioxidant enzymes.
Moreover, green tea injection also normalized the activity of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, which is increased in the liver of arthritic patients and considered as a risk factor for the development of arthritis. Increased activity glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase was associated to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in oxidative metabolism in inflicted damage on all classes of macromolecules.
Additional differentiation of green tea EGCG immunomodulatory effects and mechanisms on experimental arthritis induced by collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice in compared to control received phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), researchers found that application of green tea EGCG at dose of 10 mg/kg demonstrated a strong effect in ameliorated clinical symptoms and reduced histological scores in arthritic mice, through modulated the immune activity by induced overexpression of the Nrf-2 antioxidant pathway, a major mechanism in the cellular defense against oxidative or electrophilic stress through detoxication and elimination.
EGCG also ameliorated experimental arthritis in mice by eliciting indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine interferon-gamma, astrocytes and microglia in facilitated production of dendritic cells (DCs) in the activation of the immune system to attack the dendritic cell located on the surface on the joint tissue.
Application of the EGCG also increased frequencies of T regs with a dominant role in the suppression of autoimmune pathology.
Some researchers suggested that increased Treg number and/or function in model systems may have a significant effect on both prevented and reversed arthritis disease.
Taken together, green tea with abundant bioactive polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered as a functional food for alleviated symptoms, reduced risk, and progression and treatment of arthritis.

Healthy Food Turmeric, a Natural Prevention and Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis (UC)<, Researchers Say
Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease induced chronic inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the digestive tract.
The disease affects the colon and the rectum, leading to bloody diarrhea accompanied by symptoms of belly pain, not feeling hungry, fatigue, weight loss, dehydration.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of joint pain or soreness and sudden urges to empty the colon right away.
The UC is caused by the immune system mistakenly attacks the cell of the colon, leading to low-grade inflammation.
According to the statistic, in the US, approximately, 1.6 million Americans are living with inflammatory bowel disease, including 907,000 people with ulcerative colitis.
More precisely, the risk of people diagnosed with ulcerative colitis per 100,000 person-years is between 2 and 14.
Conventionally, the treatment of UC is focused on reduced symptoms and prevent the fare up. In some cases, surgery may be necessary if the medication fails.
The are many prevalent factors associated with UC, including aging, ethnicity, and family. However, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong implication in inducing the rise of ulcerative colitis.
Dr. Mitsuro Chiba, the lead scientist wrote, " Diets rich in animal protein (risk factor) and deficient in dietary fiber (preventive factor) are characteristic of westernized diets in affluent societies. Recent research shows that westernized diets are associated with reduced gut microbial diversity (dysbiosis), which may result in increased susceptibility to IBD and other common chronic diseases".
And, "Plant-based diets rich in dietary fiber are associated with increased microbial diversity. Recent reports on IBD therapy that replaced westernized diets with plant-based diets achieved far better outcomes than those previously reported in the literature. We believe that westernized diet-associated gut dysbiosis is the most ubiquitous environmental factor in IBD".
The results strongly link the risk of IBD in people who follow the Western diet.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, researchers conducted a systematical review and meta-analyze on the efficacy of oral curcumin administration as adjuvant therapy of UC. MEDLINE, Cochrane/CENTRAL, ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO-ICT.
According to the findings, With the M-H method, treatment with curcumin was significantly superior to placebo but not in the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis.
However, with the more accurate B-B method, both analyses were found to be insignificant.
In other words, oral curcumin administration was not superior to placebo in attaining remission in patients with UC.
In other to clarify the effect of curcumin on UC, a joint study led by the Bassett Medical Center was conducted by searching the databases of medical literature in the MEDLINE, Pubmed, and Embase through December 2017.
According to the results of 3 randomized controlled trials including 142 patients included in the study, clinical improvement, endoscopic remission, and improvement rate also trended higher in the curcumin group compared to placebo.
In other words, higher clinical remission rates when curcumin was used in combination with mesalamine to achieve remission in patients with UC.
Dr. Iqb al U, the lead scientist wrote, "Curcumin, due to its cost-effectiveness and safer side effect profile, can decrease the healthcare burden and morbidity associated with this relapsing and remitting disease".
Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention of ulcerative colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Tea and Its Bioactive Polyphenols That Inhibit Risk and Treatment of Candidiasis
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of Candidiasis, some scientists suggested.
Candida albicans are members of a large group of microorganism whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeast, fungi, and mold, living among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.
Overgrowth of candida is also known as candidiasis, affecting the skin, including the skin of the vagina, the penis, and the mouth.
In severe cases, the yeast overgrowth also causes infection of the blood and internal organs such as the liver, lung, and spleen.
Some researchers suggested that candidiasis can weaken the immune function, therefore, the infection has a strongly negative implication in people with damaged immune diseases, such as AIDS. Particularly, people are treated with chemotherapy for cancer.
Unhealthy diet and lifestyle are associated with increased risk of candida overgrowth. The article, "Lifestyle Habits That Lead to Yeast Infections" By Gina Roberts-Grey and Reviewed by Rosalyn Carson-DeWitt, MD, wrote, ".....modifying some every day habits can alleviate yeast infection symptoms and reduce the odds you will have a vaginal infection" and “Many women don’t realize they have the ability to reduce their chances of developing a yeast infection”(4).
Symptoms of candidiasis are totally depending on the infected locations. Vaginal yeast infection can cause the discharge of a thick, white, clumpy (cottage-cheese-like) substance with odor, leading to itches, urinary burning sensation, and painful sexual intercourse.
In nail, the yeast infection can cause painful, red, swollen around the nail.
In the mouth, the infection may induce cracked, red at the corners of the mouth.
In the investigation of The effectiveness of the synergistic herbal-based composition of purified catechins with fluconazole, amphotericin B and copper sulphate against Candida albicans (MTCC 3017) and Candida glabrata (MTCC 3019), researchers found that* According to the time-kill assay, catechins demonstrated twice efficacy in the same at minimum inhibitory concentration in compared to antimycotics.
*Additional copper sulfate injection increased anticandidal efficacy of synergistic combinations by 0.4% to 6.63%.
* The combination significantly induced cytotoxicity with high percentage viability (≥91.4% to≥100%) of Vero cell line without inducing harm to nearby healthy cells.
Base on these results, Dr. Ning Y, the lead scientist said, "(the) present evaluated synergistic composition can confer promising anticandidal efficacy" and (However, These result) requires further investigation of safety and translational guidelines for effective and safer green tea-based potent therapeutic drug".
Further evaluation of green tea bioactive polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in inhibited the growth of Candida albicans planktonic cells and enhanced the antifungal activity of antimycotics of Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis, Candida glabrata, Candida kefyr, and Candida krusei, the Nihon University School of Dentistry at Matsudo filed the reports as follows
* Green tea EGCG exerted a synergistic activity with miconazole, fluconazole or amphotericin B against most test planktonic and biofilm cells of Candida species (FIC≤0.5).
* All biofilm cells were significantly more resistant to EGCG and antimycotics (20-3200 times higher) in compared with their planktonic counterparts.
These results suggested, "EGCG enhances the antifungal effects of miconazole, fluconazole, and amphotericin B. Combined treatment with EGCG may lower the dosages of antimycotics, thus preventing adverse effects and the emergence of drug-resistant oral Candida species".
Interestingly, the assessment of antifungal activity of catechin pH dependently displayed that
* The concentration of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) causing 90% growth inhibition of tested strains of C. albicans was 2000 mg/L at pH 6.0, 500-1000 mg/L at pH 6.5 and 15.6-250 mg/L at pH 7.0.
* Among catechins, pyrogallol catechin showed stronger antifungal activity against C. albicans than catechol catechin.
* The addition of 6.25-25 or 3.12-12.5 mg/L EGCG to amphotericin B 0.125 or 0.25 mg/L (below MIC) at pH 7.0 resulted in enhancement, respectively, of the antifungal effect of amphotericin B against amphotericin B-susceptible or -resistant C. albicans.
* Combined treatment with 3.12-12.5 mg/L EGCg plus amphotericin B 0.5 mg/L (below MIC) markedly decreased the growth of amphotericin B-resistant C. albicans.
* Fluconazole-susceptible C. albicans was treated with 25-50 mg/L EGCg and fluconazole 0.125-0.25 mg/L (below MIC), its growth was inhibited by 93.0%-99.4% compared with its growth in the presence of fluconazole alone.
* The combined use of 12.5 mg/L EGCg and fluconazole 10-50 mg/L (below MIC) inhibited the growth of fluconazole-resistant C. albicans by 98.5%-99.7%.
The findings suggested that green tea extract and its bioactive polyphenols may be used alone to reduced risk and treatment or secondary therapy in enhanced standard medicine for the treatment of Candidiasis.

Turmeric, the Anti Hyperlipidemia Herbal Remedy
Hyperlipidemia or high blood cholesterol is a condition that causes abnormally high levels of lipids in the blood.
Cholesterol plays an essential role in moderate amount in orchestrating the production of steroid hormone and vitamin D, building strong cell walls and aiding the digestive system in absorbing nutrients and fluids.
Cholesterol can either be produced by the liver or consumed form the food sources. There are 2 types of cholesterol
*The high-density lipoprotein is also known as "good" cholesterol processes a function to return cholesterol to the liver.
* The low-density lipoprotein is also known as "bad" cholesterol processed a function aforementioned health benefits in moderate amount.
In a healthy individual, the bad cholesterol is returned to the liver. However, overexpression of "bad" cholesterol due to the consumption of a high-fat diet and reduced levels of "good" cholesterol can induce an unhealthy ratio of bad and good cholesterol, leading to bad cholesterol remaining in the bloodstream, a cause of hyperlipidemia.
Overexpression of bad cholesterol has been found to facilitate the plaque accumulated in the arterial wall, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL in the US.
Conventionally, hyperlipidemia is treated by simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin, and rosuvastatin. However, holistically, by a change of diet and daily moderate exercise, you may control the condition without medication.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On findings a potential compound for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers investigated the effects of curcumin on hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis in high-fructose-fed Wistar rats.
Rat groups selected to the study were divided into four groups with 10 rats in each group with two groups fed with standard rodent diet with or without plus curcumin (200 mg/kg body weight) and the other two with 60% high-fructose diet with or without curcumin (200 mg/kg body weight)for 10 weeks.
According to the results of differentiation, co-administration of curcumin reduced body weight, liver weight, adipose weight, plasma levels of TAG, VLDL-C associated with the onset of hyperlipidemia compared to the untreated group.
Additionally, curcumin also increased the levels of lipid ratios in favors of the HDL-C by increasing the levels of HDL-C (28.4 ± 4.5 mg/dL) in fructose-fed rats compared to standard rodent diet rats.
The protein expression of LXR-α (43%) and SREBP1c (59%) associated with inflammation and activation of cholesterol in the liver were also decreased by the injection curcumin.
More importantly, curcumin suppressed the expression of lipogenic enzymes associated with lipid metabolism and genes involved in cholesterol production in rats fed with a high-fructose diet.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Curcumin prevented the high-fructose induced hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis".
Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cucumber's Cucurbitacin B (CuB) Might Process Anti Diabetes Potency
Diabetes is a medical condition caused by not insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream.
In other words, diabetes is a condition associated with the inability of the body to use insulin properly.
Most cases of insulin insufficiency in the bloodstream in diabetes are either caused by the gradual died-off of the pancreas beta cells or insulin receptors clogged-up by fat and cholesterol.
Hallmarks of diabetes are hyperglycemia and insulin resistance.
According to the statistics, in 2017, 7.3% of Canadians aged 12 and older (roughly 2.3 million people) reported being diagnosed with diabetes
Most common causes of diabetes are
* Metabolic syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose
associated with an increased risk of diabetes.
* Gestational diabetes
High blood glucose of pregnant women has been found to increase the risk of diabetes in later life.
* Prediabetes
Most cases of prediabetes are caused by unhealthy diets with high saturated fat, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking. Prediabetes is a high-risk state for diabetes, especially in patients who remain with prediabetes despite intensive lifestyle intervention.
* Damage to the Pancreas causes the gradual and irreversible loss of beta cells that reduce the production of insulin
* Influenza a viruses
Influenza A virus is a common cause of pancreatitis in naturally and experimentally infected animals.
However, recently, researchers found that influenza virus infection may play a role as a causative agent of pancreatitis and diabetes in humans.
* * Head trauma
Head trauma is considered a possible cause of central diabetes insipidus with symptoms of failure to concentrate urine, an increase in urine specific gravity.
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to find a natural compound which processes anti-diabetes property, researchers investigated the effect of different fractions of Cucumis prophetarum on antidiabetic and antioxidant activity.
The study was carried out to examine the anti-diabetes and antioxidants of the different doses of aqueous crude extract (CE) of C. prophetarum fruits fractionated into water-soluble fraction 1 (F1), chloroform fraction 2 (F2), basic fraction 3 (F3), and neutral fraction 4 (F4) by acid-base extraction,
Based on the chemical analysis,
* F1 exhibited effective antidiabetic activity with an IC50 value of 20.6 and 59.9 µg/mL.
* According to α-amylase assay, the anti-diabetes activity was found in the decreasing order of CE > F4 > F3 > F2.
* According to the DPPH assay, F1 (IC50 = 73 µg/mL) showed better reducing ability than CE >F4 >F2 > F3 (IC50 = 78-272 µg/mL
* Furthermore, according to the SO and metal chelation assays, F1 showed the highest activity anti-diabetes at the IC50 = 101 and 147 µg/mL.
These results strongly suggested that F1 possesses a potent antidiabetic compared to other fractions, in vitro.
In other words, all ingredients in cucumbers work synergistically to exhibit the anti-diabetes activity compared to a single compound.
Taken altogether, cucumber may be used for the treatment of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea And Its Bioactive Polyphenols in Reduced Risk, Progression of Fibromyalgia,Caused by Sleep Disturbance
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced onset, progression and treatment of fibromyalgia caused by sleep disturbance, some scientists suggested.
Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain affecting over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people in the US alone.
In the study of sleep disturbance causable fibromyalgia, Dr. Choy EH suggested that patients with fibromyalgia demonstrated a reduced short-wave sleep and abnormal α-rhythms, suggestive of wakefulness during non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep in compared to the healthy individuals according to the observation of polysomnography.
Furthermore, in healthy participants, the study indicated that sleep deprivation can also cause fibromyalgia-like symptoms such as myalgia, tenderness, and fatigue and suggested that sleep dysfunction might be not only a consequence of pain.
These results showed strong correlated conditions of sleep disturbance and initiation of chronic fibromyalgia if sleep disorders are left untreated for a prolonged period of time.
Moreover, according to the presentation, long time effect of sleep disturbance may influence alter the pathophysiology of the central nervous system in abnormal pain processing and central sensitization, according to the observation of the neuroimaging of patients with fibromyalgia neural activation in compared to a lower pressure-pain threshold in healthy age-matched and gender-matched individuals.
After taking into account to other confounders, researchers said, " improving sleep quality can reduce pain and fatigue, further supporting the hypothesis that sleep dysfunction is a pathogenic stimulus of fibromyalgia".
Green tea, bioactive polyphenols (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in the evaluation of the the chick brain under an acute stressful condition in facilitated sleep disturbance, researchers found that EGCG attenuates stress behavior with special reference to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter with function in sending chemical messages through the brain and the nervous system, and involving in regulating communication between brain cells in stress environment.
Deficiency is associated with many nervous conditions, including depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.
Application of EGCG of doses of 50, 100 and 200 microg, intracerebroventricularly exerted a profound effect in suppressed the vocalization which normally occurs during social separation stress.
This illustration truly suggested that EGCG reduced the time spent in active wakefulness and induced sleep-like behavior in a dose-dependent manner.
Furthermore, under influence and presence of the GABAA receptor antagonist picrotoxin but not by the GABAB receptor antagonist CGP 54626 (3-N-(1-(3,4-chlorophenyl)ethylamino)-2-hydroxypropyl cyclohexyl methyl phosphinic acid hydrochloride), a antidote in poisoning by CNS depressants, the effect of green tea EGCG is significantly decreased in attenuated the production of hormone corticosterone release under social separation stress.
This interaction opinionated that EGCG induced sedation and hypnosis in reduced stress hormone production in precipitated sleep distance probably though GABAA receptors in moderated an acute stress response.
Some researchers suggested that green tea improved symptoms of fibromyalgia by normalizing the levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) when came under stress, may have a therapeutic effect in reduced anxiety by relaxing the muscles and the brain. through increased production of dopamines, serotonin, and alpha waves within the brain in orchestrated the sleep pattern.
These improvements were associated with the interaction of the brain with chemical compounds found in green tea Caffeine and L-theanine, suggested by the author.
Taken together, the information findings suggested that green tea and its bioactive polyphenols EGCG and L-theanine may be considered as a functional food for reduced risk, progression, and treatment of fibromyalgia caused by a sleep disorder. However, the intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Carotenoids Protects the Eyes of Elderly Against Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is a condition caused by the deterioration of the small central portion of the retina, known as the macula
Macular degeneration happened mostly in adults over 60, is one of the major cause of vision loss.
The exact causes of macular degeneration are not identified. As of today, researchers cannot explain why some elderly are susceptible to macular degeneration while others do not.
However, researchers do know that certain risk factors have been found epidemiologically to induce the risk of macular degeneration including aging, the disease has been found most commonly in people over 50, family history and genetics, race, macular degeneration is more common in Caucasians.
Smoking, obesity and medical condition such as cardiovascular disease are also associated with a higher risk of macular degeneration
There are 2 forms of macular degeneration found in the elderly
* The dry form is caused by the presence of yellow deposits, called drusen under the retina, in the macula. However, the elderly with increased was not at a higher risk of macular degeneration.
* The wet form is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels from the choroid, the vascular layer of the eye, underneath the retina.
Compared to the loss of vision of 10% of patients induced by the wet form, most patients of macular degeneration have the dry form which has been found to cause loss of some central vision.
Some researchers suggested that macular degeneration may also be caused by an unhealthy diet. Dr. Martha P. Montgomery wrote, "A 97-item Block food frequency questionnaire was used to gather diet information, and overall diet quality was measured using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)".
And, "Participants in the highest quartile of diet quality had significantly reduced odds of AMD according to the AHEI score (0.54, 95% confidence interval 0.30 – 0.99) and non-significantly reduced odds of AMD according to the HEI (0.75, 0.41 – 1.38). Odds of AMD were also 51% lower in the highest quartile of fish intake compared to the lowest quartile (odds ratio = 0.49, 0.26 – 0.90)".
These results strongly suggested the risk of AMD is many folds higher in people who follow the Western diet compared to those who follow the Oriental diet.
Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.
On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), researchers examined the beneficial role for carotenoids in the prevention of AMD.
Epidemiologically, in a case-control study by comparing the risk AMD in subjects with late AMD, exudative AMD, and retinal pigment abnormalities with the presence of drusen, and an equal number of control subjects,
*Administration of lutein and zeaxanthin induced serum concentrations were not associated with the risk of AMD.
* Consumption of food sources of lutein and zeaxanthin (carotenoids) was associated with reducing the risk of macular degeneration.
* People with higher levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in the blood have a lower risk of AMD.
However, the reduced risk of lutein and zeaxanthin for AMD when levels of the carotenoids are elevated in the serum or diet was not consistent.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Until scientifically sound knowledge is available we recommend for patients judged to be at risk for AMD to alter their diet to more dark green leafy vegetables, wear UV protective lenses and a hat when outdoors".
Taken altogether, carotenoids, particularly lutein and zeaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
