Onion's Quercetin inhibits the Effect of Hypertension Against the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Overweight and Obese Individuals

Hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure in the bloodstream. Hypertension a member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately, 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, or 1 in 2 adults in the US have the syndrome.

Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, inclduing over 650 million were obese worldwide.

Bad eating habits, unhealthy lifestyle and certain medical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, and sleep apnea not only induce overweight and obesity but also increase the risk of high blood pressure.

Dr. Shu-Zhong Jiang, the lead scientist wrote, "The imbalance between energy intake and expenditure is the main cause of excessive overweight and obesity. Technically, obesity is defined as the abnormal accumulation of ≥20% of body fat, over the individual's ideal body weight".

And, "Excessive overweight remains among the most neglected public health issues worldwide, while obesity is associated with increased risks of disability, illness, and death. Cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of mortality worldwide, particularly hypertension and diabetes, are the main illnesses associated with obesity".

The results strongly suggested that obesity not only is associated with hypertension but also is the major contributor to the risk of other chronic diseases.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potential compound for the inhibition of hypertension, researchers examined the effects of polyphenol quercetin in pre-hypertension and stage I hypertension in overweight and obesity individuals.

The double-blinded, placebo-controlled cross-over trial included 70 Subjects randomized to receive 162 mg/d quercetin from onion skin extract powder or placebo for 6-weeks separated by a 6-week washout period.

According to tested assays and compared to the baseline,
* Group treated with quercetin did not significantly show the effect on 24 h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) parameters and office BP in the hypertensives subgroup.

* However, quercetin decreased 24 h systolic BP by -3·6 mmHg (P=0·022) compared to placebo.

* Furthermore, quercetin treatment significantly decreased day-time and night-time systolic BP in hypertensives without alternating vasoactive biomarkers such as endothelial function, parameters of oxidation, inflammation, lipid, and glucose metabolism in the total and hypertensive subgroup.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " supplementation with 162 mg/d quercetin from onion skin extract lowers ABP in patients with hypertension, suggesting a cardioprotective effect of quercetin".

In other words, supplementation with 162 mg/d quercetin from onion skin extract protects the heart against CVD by normalizing the blood pressure in hypertensive patients through unknown mechanisms.

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver alcoholic cytotoxicity pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea, A Potent with Antioxidant Mouth Rinse

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk of microbial infection, some scientists suggested.

The result of the study was conducted and published online medical literature by some respectable institutes, including the Institute of Dental Sciences.

Green tea, a precious drink processed number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the finding of the natural and economic alternative, researchers at the joint study lead by the J. Institute of Dental Sciences conducted an evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of 0.5% green tea and 0.2% CHX mouth rinse against Streptococcus Mutans, Lactobacilli spp. and Candida Albicans.

In the total of 30 children aged 4-6 years with S-ECC (based on defs score) selected and randomly assigned to 2 equal groups rinsed with the prescribed mouth rinse and 0.5% green tea once daily for 2 weeks after breakfast under supervision, researchers found that both applications exerted a statistically significant fall in colony count in Streptococcus Mutans and lactobacilli.

However, Both injection did not express any clinical significant in reduced the colonization of Candida Albicans.

Interestingly, green tea mouth rinse was found to be significantly better than CHX in all aspects except. microbial lactobacilli spp,

In compared anti microbial efficacy of antimicrobial green tea, garlic with lime, and 0.05% sodium fluoride (NaF) mouth rinses against Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacilli species, and Candida albicans in a total 45 children aged 4 to 6 years with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC; based on decayed extracted filled [defs] score) selected and divided randomly into three equal groups of to rinse with the prescribed mouth rinse once daily for 2 weeks after breakfast under supervision as mentioned above, researchers indicated that all 3 applications demonstrated a statistically significant reduction of colony count of S. mutans and Lactobacilli spp. but not against C. albicans with no statistically significant differences in three groups compared to baselines and assays.

Dr. Thomas A, the lead author, after taking into account of other confounders, said, "The findings... indicate that green tea and garlic with lime mouth rinse can be an economical alternative to NaF mouth rinse both for prevention and therapeutics".

The above differentiation was supported by the joint study lead by the Institute of Dental Sciences.

According to the result in compared the antimicrobial efficacy of chlorhexidine (0.2%), sodium fluoride (0.05%), fluoride with essential oils (0.05%), alum (0.02 M), green tea, and garlic with lime mouth rinses against Streptococcus mutans, lactobacilli, and Candida albicans through saliva samples collected from children with severe early childhood caries, application of chlorhexidine mouth rinse was most effective against S. mutans and lactobacilli in compared to sodium fluoride, fluoride with essential oils, alum, green tea, and garlic with lime mouth rinses.

Furthermore, the group treated with a lime mouth rinse exerted a stronger anti-C. albicans activity in compared to chlorhexidine, sodium fluoride, fluoride with essential oils, alum, and green tea mouth rinses.

Moreover, analysis of the efficacy in the reduced colony of S. mutans and lactobacilli, researchers found that after chlorhexidine mouth rinse, garlic with lime mouth rinse was found to be significantly more effective than sodium fluoride, fluoride with essential oils, alum, and green tea mouth rinses.

These results indicated that application of green tea with different concentration may have a profound and positive effect in reduced risk of bacterial infection through anti-inflammatory activity of green tea phytochemical polyphenols in protecting our body against infection caused by microbial invasion through actions in intercepted the surge of inflammatory markers like cytokines and production of cyclooxygenase-2 in innated anti-inflammatory cytokines.

And antioxidant activities through its bioactive chemical compounds and stimulated production of natural antioxidants found on the host body tissues in the induction of the ROS cytotoxicity against microorganisms without inducing harm to nearby healthy cells.

The results also firmly suggested that green tea mouth rinse can be considered safe, economical and used without much concern.

Betaxanthins, the Natural Free Radical Scavenger

Free radical scavengers are types of antioxidants that inhibit free radicals before they can induce oxidation.

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.

Oxidative stress associated with chronic disease is caused by a long-term imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants. Over time, oxidative stress epidemiologically can cause proteins, lipid, and cellular damage, major causes of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Antioxidants besides produced by the body, they can also come into the body from the dietary sources.

Not all free radicals are bad, in a moderate amount, free radicals are necessary for the body functioning, including the promotion of heart function in blood circulation.

Dr. Anu Rahal and colleagues in the examination of the interplay of oxidative stress, prooxidants, and antioxidants wrote, "Oxidative stress is a normal phenomenon in the body. Under normal conditions, the physiologically important intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are maintained at low levels by various enzyme systems participating in the in vivo redox homeostasis".

And, "the importance of oxidative stress in the body growth and development as well as proteomic and genomic evidences of its relationship with disease development, incidence of malignancies and autoimmune disorders, increased susceptibility to bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases, and an interplay with prooxidants and antioxidants for maintaining a sound health, which would be helpful in enhancing the knowledge of any biochemist, pathophysiologist, or medical personnel regarding this important issue".

Most common types of free radical scavengers produced by the human
* Catalases are antioxidants that protect the cell from oxidative damage by decomposed hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen.

*Glutathione peroxidase, is a cytosolic enzyme produced by the host that dissolves hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen and peroxide radicals to alcohols and oxygen.

*Superoxide dismutase (SOD) dissolves superoxide radical into either ordinary molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide.

Betaxanthins are Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effects of proline-betaxanthin generated by betalamic acid, the chromophore of betaxanthins.

According to the results of 24 betaxanthin species synthesized by the condensation reaction of purified betalamic acid and amino acids or amines, researchers found that all compounds exerted a significant inhibition of free radicals.

γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-betaxanthins, compared to Proline-, dopamine-, under large-scale conditions, and their 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl showed comparatively low activity,

Furthermore, the free radical scavenging activity of dopamine-betaxanthin was similar to that of red pigment betanin and the anthocyanin cyanidin 3-glucoside.

Moreover, proline-betaxanthin demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity compared to those of dopamine-, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, similar to those of flavonoid quercetin.

Taken altogether, betaxanthins may be considered a free radical scavenging antioxidant remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea Significantly Improved Glucose Metabolism in Prediabetics

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect on improved glucose metabolism, some scientists suggested.

Glucose metabolism is an action of the body to convert glucose intake to energy to nourish the body tissues and organs through oxidized to carbon dioxide and water.

Long term abnormal glucose metabolism is considered as a leading cause of diabetes and diabetic complications.

Green tea extract, in the evaluation of the on carbohydrate metabolic key enzymes in control and streptozotocin high fat diet-induced diabetic rats in 30 days, demonstrated significant activity in ameliorated the overexpression of plasma glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and increase in the levels of insulin and hemoglobin.

Further analysis also found that the application exerted a profound effect in restore, in some extends, the function of altered activities of the key enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism, such as hexokinase, pyruvate kinase, lactate dehydrogenase in both diabetic and control groups.

In the diabetic rat's group, green tea extract strongly averted the abnormal expression of glycogen phosphorylase in the liver to near-normal levels.

Additionally, the diabetic group after administration of green tea extract exhibited antihyperglycemic potential, observed through improved muscle and hepatic glycogen content.

The information findings showed green tea extract have a directed implication in attenuated abnormal glucose metabolism in compared to the effectiveness of conventional medicine metformin, a standard oral hypoglycemic drug.

Moreover, in the study to confirm the epidemiological study suggestion of improvement in glucose metabolism in diabetic mice and healthy humans upon green tea consumption, researchers found that
injection green tea in diabetic mice and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice after 2-6 h expresses lower levels of glucose with no alternation of serum insulin level, at a dose of 300 mg/kg in compared to normal control mice.

In protein differentiation, green tea extract administration decreased the serum protein level which has been associated with glucose production, minimized the increase of blood glucose levels through stimulating additional small amounts of insulin in diabetes. These results addressed another indication of green tea function in exerted direct influence in the modulation of glucose metabolism in the tested subject.

Interestingly, in the investigation of green tea effect in glucose uptake inhibitory activity in Caco-2 cells, researchers indicated that green tea at a temperature of 60 degrees in Celsius significantly improved the capacity of antioxidants in inhibition of glucose uptake through regulation of cellular glucose metabolism.

Incredibly, temperature over 60 degrees Celsius, green tea application did not increase or showed an upward trend in the inhibitory potential, the Huazhong Agricultural University suggested.

Taken together, green tea with abundant bioactive phytochemicals may be considered as a functional food in improved glucose metabolism in reduced risk of diabetes onset. People in high-risk diabetes such as prediabetics may want to add 1 or 2 cups of green tea into their diet for preventive measures.

Collard Green Protects the Nerves Against the Risk of Peripheral Neuropathy in Diabetes

Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of patients with diabetes associated with nerve damage, inducing pain and numbness in the legs and feet to conditions associated with the digestive system.

Most cases of diabetic neuropathy in diabetics are involved in a history of hyperglycemia caused by long-term high levels of glucose in the bloodstream, urinary tract, blood vessels, and heart due to poor lifestyle.

Peripheral neuropathy is the main type of diabetic neuropathy, affecting the nerves that control the feet and legs first, followed by the hands and arms. Other main types of diabetic neuropathy are
* The autonomic neuropathy that affects the nerves that control the heart, bladder, stomach, intestines, sex organs and eyes.

* Radiculoplexus neuropathy found mostly in older patients affects nerves that control the thighs, hips, buttocks or legs.

* Mononeuropathy, or focal neuropathy also found commonly in older patients affects the nerves that control the face, middle of the body (torso) or leg.

The most common signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are a gradual onset of numbness, prickling or tingling in the feet or hands, over time which can spread upward into your legs and arms.

Some patients with peripheral neuropathy may also experience sharp, jabbing, throbbing or burning pain and skin that extreme sensitivity to touch.

The causes of peripheral neuropathy that damage nerves and blood vessels in the affected area has been found to induce by overtime, uncontrolled high blood sugar.

In other words, peripheral neuropathy is preventable by keeping the blood glucose in the healthy range.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the prevention of diabetes complications-induced loss of limbs' sensation that results in lower limb amputation in patients with diabetes, researchers examined the effects of sulforaphane on peripheral neuropathy in an animal model.

The experiment included diabetes rats induced through single intraperitoneal injections of nicotinamide (50 mg/kg) and streptozotocin (52.5 mg/kg) randomly divided into five groups
* Two groups were treated with saline or sulforaphane

* Three diabetic groups were either untreated or given sulforaphane (1 mg/kg, p.o.) or pregabalin (10 mg/kg, i.p.).

According to the results of tested analysis after 2 weeks, groups treated with sulforaphane restored animals' body weight, reduced levels of blood glucose in the nicotinamide (50 mg/kg) and streptozotocin (52.5 mg/kg) treated group

Furthermore, glycated hemoglobin and increased insulin levels were also normalized by the administration of sulforaphane, compared to the untreated diabetes groups,

Histopathological changes induced by the nicotinamide (50 mg/kg) and streptozotocin were also reversed in the sulforaphane-treated group observed by the normalizing motor coordination and the latency withdrawal time and increasing the latency withdrawal time.

Furthermore, sulforaphane also decreased markers (malondialdehyde) of oxidative stress of sciatic nerve and inhibited the overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of the production of proinflammatory cytokines and cellular damage compared to untreated groups.

Moreover, levels of antioxidant enzymes in the sciatic nerves produced the treatment groups also significant increase by the injection of sulforaphane.

The results strongly suggested that sulforaphane processed a neuroprotective effect against peripheral neuropathy in diabetic rats possibly through modulating oxidative stress, inflammation, and extracellular matrix associated with cellular differentiation remodeling,

Collectively, researchers wrote in the final report, " In NA-STZ model of diabetes mellitus, sulforaphane, restored animals' body weight, reduced blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and increased insulin levels. In parallel, it normalized motor coordination and the latency withdrawal time of the tail-flick test increased the latency withdrawal time of cold allodynia test and ameliorated histopathological changes".

Taken altogether, collard green processed abundantly bioactive compound sulforaphane may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of peripheral neuropathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Tea and Its Bioactive Polyphenols in Reduced Alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) Deficiency in Induction of Fibromyalgia

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect on the reduced onset. progression and treatment of Alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency in induced fibromyalgia, some scientists suggested.

Green tea is a precious drink that processed a number of health benefits and known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain, affecting over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people in the US alone.

Serum of alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) impregnated in most body tissues circulates in our body in high concentrations with function as a broad anti-inflammatory spectrum in inhibition of enzymes of inflammatory cells, especially neutrophil elastase.

In the study of the effect of serum of alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) and risk of fibromyalgia (FM), researchers at the Hospital Valle del Nalón found that deficiency of AAT has been found in numbers of patients with fibromyalgia (FM) with severe hereditary.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging of these patients revealed significant greater activity in pain-sensitive areas of the brain in response to cutaneous stimuli, which may be another evidence for a physiological explanation for FM pain.

Furthermore, patients with FM also were found to consist of abnormal profiles of inflammation markers in biopsies analysis.

The results suggested that these patients may have an imbalance level of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory substances, in the soft body tissues caused by alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency.

Due to surprising findings, Dr. Blanco LE, the lead author, after taking into account of other confounders, said, "identification of genetic, familial, and environmental risk factors suspected to participate in the FM syndrome development (may be necessary) to determine the gene frequency of AAT deficiency alleles in FM patients".

Green tea, bioactive polyphenols EGCG, according to the Dr Helieh S in animal model induced by alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) (α1-antitrypsin) deficiency exerted a significant anti-inflammatory effect in inhibited the PI3K/Akt signalling pathway with function in activated proinflammatory factors through the innate immune response involved in pathogen killing, antigen processing and immune cell survival.

Moreover, green tea EGCG application also enhanced antioxidant activity not only through its antioxidant profiles but also stimulated the production of the body's natural antioxidants in reduced inflammatory response through nitric oxide (NO) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, observed by Griess reagent and western blotting.

These results indicated that green tea EGCG may have a profound effect in reduced serum alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency in initiated the onset of fibromyalgia

The above differentiation was supported by the review of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases and Green Tea Polyphenol, by Dr. Helieh S. Oz at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

According to the authors, green tea polyphenols are potent antioxidants with important roles in regulating vital signaling pathways in activated inflammatory responses by attenuated nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB IKK, NF-κB in facilitated innate- and adaptive immune responses, cell death and inflammation and cytokines like TNFα, inflammatory markers and cyclooxygenase-2 in elevated symptoms of inflammation and pain.

Dr. Helieh S., in summary, said, "green tea polyphenols (GrTPs) are potent antioxidants with important roles in regulating vital signaling pathways" and "these comprise transcription nuclear factor-kappa B mediated I kappas B kinase complex pathways, programmed cell death pathways like caspases and B-cell lymphoma-2 (through regulating the cytochrome c release from the mitochondria) and intervention with the surge of inflammatory markers like cytokines and production of cyclooxygenase-2"".

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered as a functional food in ameliorated serum alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency effect in initiated the onset of fibromyalgia. However, the intake of green tea supplements should be taken with extreme care due to recent medical reports of acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain, The Natural Prevention and Treatment of Edema

Edema is a condition associated with the abnormal accumulation of fluid in certain tissues within the body.

Depending on the affected area or organs, edema can be peripheral edema or ankle edema, and pulmonary edema if the fluid is accumulated in skin ankle and lung respectively.

Traditional Chinese medicine suggested that fluid accumulation is caused by kidney dysfunction in transport the fluid coming from the pancreas to nourish other body tissues and organs.

In other words, kidney deficiency is a major cause of edema. Similar to the aforementioned condition, conventional medicine also suggested that certain kidney diseases can induce fluid retention in some parts of the body.

Furthermore, heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, venous insufficiency are also the most common systemic diseases that cause edema, epidemiologically.

Most common risk factors associated with the risk of edema are mostly involved in the lifestyle and general health factors, including staying in one position (sitting, standing or supine) for too long, increased sodium intake and hormonal changes due to menstruation.

Some women during the course of pregnancy also experience symptoms of edema, particularly under the skin of the leg.

Furthermore, the use of medications such as Estrogen-based medication Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), certain diabetes medications and medical equipment such as vasodilators has also been found to increase the risk of fluid retention.

Conventionally, the treatment of edema is totally depending on the causes of the disease. Untreated edema has been associated with the complication of skin infections or ulcerating, leading to, decreased blood circulation and increasing the risk of blood clots in the deep veins of the body.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of edema, researchers examined the Bromelain-loaded katira gum nanoparticles' effect on an animal model.

According to the tested results, the Nanoparticles of the optimized batch showed a strong anti-inflammatory activity by employing the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema method in vivo.

In other words, the anti-inflammatory activity of potential was attributed to enhanced absorption owing to reduced particle size and the protection of bromelain from acid proteases.

Moreover, according to the search of the computerized bibliographic databases Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, and CINAHL was performed on March 23, 2015, researchers found 7 studies used oral bromelain for the treatment of edema.

5/7 randomized controlled trials reported improvement postprocedure with oral bromelain compared to those of arnica,

Taken altogether, oral bromelain may be used for the treatment of edema, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
