Herbal Andrographis may have potential and profound effects in reducing risk and treatment of colitis with no side effects, scientists suggested
Colitis is a condition of inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.
There is a number of causes of the disease, including infection, inflammatory bowel disease, and allergic reactions.
Other types of colitis include
* Microscopic colitis a condition referred to collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis, two related medical conditions which cause diarrhea.
* Ischemic colitis, another colon infection which may also go away with a mild treatment, such as a short-term liquid diet and antibiotics.
If you are experiencing some of the symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea and cramping, dehydration, selling of joint, eye inflammation and fever or chill, you may have colitis. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of the disease.
Dr. Winther KV in the study to examine the survival and cause-specific mortality in ulcerative colitis, including 1160 patients diagnosed with ulcerative colitis between 1962 and 1987 was followed-up until 1997 to describe survival and cause-specific mortality.
At that span, a total of 261 deaths occurred, not significantly different from the expected number of 249 (SMR, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.92-1.19). The median age at death among men was 70 years (range, 6-96 years) and among women 74 years (range, 25-96 years).
The mortality was increased in patients with pulmonary embolism and pneumonia.
The doctor team wrote, in the final report, "Despite an overall normal life expectancy for patients with ulcerative colitis, patients >50 years of age and with extensive colitis at diagnosis had increased mortality within the first 2 years after diagnosis, owing to colitis-associated postoperative complications and comorbidity".
The results clearly suggested that patients with colitis are at increased risk to die due to the complication of other diseases, particularly, in the first 2 years of diagnosis.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.
The plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chickenpox, etc.
Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients includediterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.
In order to reaffirm the use of extracts of the plant Andrographis paniculata anti-inflammatory diseases in Asian countries, researchers examined the effects of HMPL-004 (A. paniculata extract) against colitis in mice model induced by injection of methylcellulose (MC).
Before the application of HMPL-004, mice treated with MC developed colitis within 4-7 weeks, accompanied by weight gain and severe intestinal inflammation.
HMPL-004-treated mice inhibited lose weight and displayed only very mild intestinal inflammation.
The inflammatory cytokines caused by the injection of MC also significantly decreased after the treatment of HMPL-004.
Higher percentages of naïve CD4(+) T cells in the lamina propria of HMPL-004-treated mice compared to MC mice.
Furthermore at the early timepoints HMPL-004-treated mice have significantly reduced splenic cell counts, reduced inflammatory markers, and reduced pro-inflammatory expression.
Moreover, HMPL-004 inhibited the proliferation of CD4 T cells that cause immune response differentiation into TH1/TH17 cells that have the capacity to cause inflammation and autoimmune disease in vitro.
The results firmly suggested that HMPL-004 has a potential effect on inflammatory diseases, particularly in inflammatory bowel disease and colitis.
The research team at the final report wrote, "HMPL-004 inhibits the development of chronic colitis by affecting early T-cell proliferation, differentiation, and TH(1)/TH(17) responses in a T-cell-driven model of colitis, presenting a unique mechanism of action".
Also, the Hutchison Medipharma Ltd.in a recent randomized, double-blind, multicentre, 8-week parallel-group study of HMPL-004, to learn more about the anti-inflammatory activity examined the Andrographis paniculata extract against mild to moderate ulcerative colitis (UC).
Compared to 16% and 82% efficacy of 4500 mg/day of slow-release mesalazine (mesalamine) granules in patients with mild-to-moderately active ulcerative colitis, the application of HMPL-004 exerted a more tenant effect on 21% and 76%, respectively.
By colonoscopy, remission and response were seen in 28% and 74% of HMPL-004-treated patients and 24% and 71% of mesalazine-treated patients, respectively.
The finding strongly supported HMPL-004 is an efficacious alternative to mesalazine in ulcerative colitis.
Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke Protects Us Against Heart Disease, According to Studies
Artichoke may be used as a natural and herbal remedy for the treatment of heart disease with no side effects, according to studies.
Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.
According to the statistics, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Approximately 2000 people in the general population die of heart disease every day.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.
Most common risk factors associated with heart disease are aging, family history with heart disease, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and cholesterol, obesity, smoking, and stress epidemiologically.
However, most people with some of the above risk factors have never developed heart disease. Symptoms of heart disease completely depend on the infected location.
Some researchers suggested that by making a change in lifestyle accompanied by moderate physical activity such as walking, the risk of heart disease can be prevented.
The American College of Cardiology wrote in the article of Heart Disease: Lifestyle Changes to Lower Risk. "Start slowly, and go at a pace you can manage. Try to do at least 2½ hours of moderate exercise a week. One way to do this is to be active 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week".
"Healthy eating starts with learning new ways to eat, such as adding more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and cutting back on foods that have a lot of saturated fat, sodium, and sugar"
"Getting active and eating a healthy diet can help you lose extra weight and quit smoking"
Finally, the article continued, "Even though you are taking medicine, it is always important to make lifestyle changes that keep your heart and your body healthy".
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae, native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and for the treatment of digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases has been a dream of many scientists. Researchers at the joint study led by the IRCCS San Raffaele Pisana, examined the effects of vegetables, including artichoke on CVD.
The joint study included a total of 38 subjects at risk of CVD. After, a week of the run-in period, participants were randomly assigned to one of the following 4-week interventions: low vegetable consumption (800 g of vegetables/week) or high vegetable consumption (4200 g of vegetables/week).
According to the assays that record immunological, and antioxidant markers, leukocyte and lymphocyte expression of the gut-homing β7 integrin, there were no significant changes detected in clinical, immunological, and antioxidant markers in biological samples, except for an increase in white blood cell count for the low vegetable consumption group.
The immune system's innate and adaptive immune responses play an essential role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases by inhibiting the pro-inflammatory expression.
The vegetable consumption group exerts a CVD protective effect in modulating markers of immune function and antioxidant status in patients with CVD. In healthy individuals, the intake of vegetables does not induce a change of both antioxidant and inflammatory markers associated with immune function, particularly in nonsmoking men.
These results strongly suggested that vegetables modulate the function of the immune system according to the needs of the body.
In other to reveal more information about artichoke anti CVD activity, Dr. Rondanelli M and colleagues at the University of Pavia investigated the artichoke extracts on the cardiovascular disease on both animals and man.
Injection of artichoke not only reduced the levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream through its hypolipidemic activity but also inhibited the expression of high blood glucose and free radicals through the antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity.
The results indicated artichoke reduced the risk and progression of cardiovascular disease by improving the production of antioxidant enzymes against oxidative stress in the initiation of low-grade inflammation, a hallmark of CVD.
Futhermore, artichoke also decreases the levels of blood cholesterol and glucose, the cluster conditions associated with the risk CVD, epidemiologically.
Taken altogether, artichoke which processes anti cardiovascular disease activity through several mechanisms may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Onion Promotes Healthy Gut Microbiota
Gut microbiota is a community of microbes living in the gastrointestinal tract, including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 million genes.
In a healthy individual, the ratio of good and bad microbes in the gut are balanced. However, people who have a psychological condition such as anxiety, and depression, and are under constant stress and long-term use of antibiotics, particularly your diet may have a negative impact on the ratio.
More precisely, under normal conditions, gut microbiota plays a critical role in overall health,
* Gut microbiota improves the absorption of the dietary nutrients of the digestive system
* Gut microbiota protects the body against xenobiotics and drug toxicity through facilitating the excretion.
* Gut microbiota also maintains the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier by enhancing the epithelial cells that protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of intestinal in nutrients adsorption.
* Gut microbiota interacts with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibits the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.
However, imbalanced the ratio of gut microbiota may have a negative impact on human health and diseases.
Epidemiological studies suggested imbalanced gut microbiota dysbiosis found in overweight and obese has been found to promote diet-induced obesity and metabolic complications.
Dr. KarinaAl-Ass wrote, "Obesity is a worldwide epidemiologic syndrome characterized by fat mass accumulation, mainly visceral fat. Current thinking considers the potential role of gut microbiota on the development of obesity and its related comorbidities"
And " Gut microbiota can influence energy extraction from food, lipid metabolism, immune response, and endocrine functions and its profile has shown to differs between obese and lean subjects".
A recent joint study led by the Tianjin Medical University, General Hospital, onion supplement may be potent to improve gut microflora and intestinal histomorphology on an animal model.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
The study included a total of 300 and 12-day old broiler chicks (Ross) that randomly divided into four groups as A served as the control without any supplementation, and B, C, and D received supplemented with onion powder at the rate of 1.5, 2 and 2.5g/kg of feed respectively.
Based on the tested results,* Supplementation of onion exerted a significantly (P<0.05) increased weight gain and feed consumption compared to control.
* Furthermore, supplementation of onion significantly inhibited the population of E. coli and increased significantly Lactobacillus and Streptococcus species.
In other words, onion supplement promotes colon health by improving the ratio of gut microbiota.
* More importantly, injection of onion supplement also significantly increases the morphometry of length, width, crypt depth and surface area of the villus in duodenum, jejunum, and ileum of the small intestine associated with the colon health optimization.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "onion supplementation in broiler produced a positive effect on performance, gut microflora, and intestinal histomorphology".
Taken altogether, onion processed a higher mount of onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the promotion of colon health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, the Anti-Obesity Functional Remedy
Obesity is a chronic and medical condition associated with excessive fat accumulation over time.
According to the BMI index, a person is considered overweight, if he/she has a BMI between 25 to 29.9 kg/m2. A BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more is an indication of obese.
In other words, obesity is a progressive chronic disease characterized by abnormal fat accumulation in the body tissues that may impair health.
Similar to other chronic medical conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure, obesity has recently become a serious health problem in the US as nearly 35% of Americans are obese accompanied by a similar percentage of overweight adults.
Epidemiologically, obesity does not only have serious effects on physical and psychological health but also has a strongly negative impact on the patient's quality of life.
Today, the widespread obesity in the US population have caused a significant economic impact on the U.S. health care system, including direct and indirect costs.
The Milken Institute wrote, "The burden of obesity, and the chronic diseases for which it is a contributing factor, has reached record economic heights. In 2016, chronic diseases driven by the risk factor of obesity and overweight accounted for $480.7 billion in direct health care costs in the U.S., with an additional $1.24 trillion in indirect costs due to lost economic productivity. The total cost of chronic diseases due to obesity and overweight was $1.72 trillion — equivalent to 9.3 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). Obesity as a risk factor is by far the greatest contributor to the burden of chronic diseases in the U.S., accounting for 47.1 percent of the total cost of chronic diseases nationwide".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
In the concern of the rise of obese incidence in the world, researchers examined the phytotherapeutic protein stem bromelain (SBM) anti-obesity activity.
In the cellular levels, SBM irreversibly inhibited 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation in the expression of the obese gene product (leptin) in white adipose and induced apoptosis and lipolysis in mature adipocytes.
At the molecular level, SBM suppressed adipogenesis by inhibiting gene expression of PPARγ in developing obesity.
Furthermore, SBM also reduced the secretion of adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (ap2) associated with obese glucose and lipid metabolism and fatty acid synthase (FAS) involved food intake and body weight.
Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) which leads to increased lipid partitioning to other tissues, insulin resistance, and obesity and gene CD36 CD36 associated with a number of metabolic pathways with relevance to obesity and enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) involved the biosynthesis and metabolism of fatty acids also inhibited by the injection of SBM.
Moreover, SBM was found to augment the expression of TNFα(tumor necrosis factor-alpha) -induced lipolysis and apoptosis in mature adipocytes, another indication of anti-obesity properties.
Where TNFα(tumor necrosis factor-alpha) has been proposed as a link between obesity and insulin resistance.
The results strongly supported the use of SBM for the prevention of obesity in an animal model.
Additionally, according to the study led by the University of British Columbia, bromelain from papaya and pineapple may be used to control obesity and obese complications such as hypertension, diabetes.
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of neurodegeneration, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The leaves, sprouts, and seeds to make medicine has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of year to treat high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance the digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney, and urinary tract infection, etc. North America aboriginal has used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.
Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help you digest fat. However, too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood. The special particle called lipoprotein moves this waxy, soft substance from place to place. If you have too much low-density lipoprotein LDL that is known as bad cholesterol, overtime cholesterol can build up in your arterial walls causing blockage and leading to heart attack and stroke.
Ingredients
1. Essential amino acids
2. Calcium
3. Magnesium
4. Potassium
5. Iron
6. Phosphorus
7. Zinc
8. Beta carotene
9. vitamin C
10. vitamins D
11.Vitamin E
12. Vitamin K
13. Etc.
It chemical constituents include flavones, isoflavones, sterols, Bichanin A Coumestrol Diadzein Formonetin Genisteincoumarin derivatives, etc.
The benefits
In the study of 15 patients with hyperlipoproteinemia who were given 40 g of heat prepared alfalfa seeds 3 times daily at mealtimes for 8 weeks with otherwise unchanged diet, the herb shows in lowering of pretreatment median values of total plasma cholesterol from 9.58 to 8.00 mmol/l (P less than 0.001) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol decreases of 17% and 18%, respectively. Another study also indicated that the constituents of soysaponin I (I), azukisaponin V (II) found in Alfalfa might process the potential in treating high blood cholesterol. In an animal study, hen fed with aqueous alfalfa extract (AAE) shows lower serum low and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, serum total triglycerides, and liver cholesterol concentration (day 42), lipid indices in the yolk, serum, and liver.
The Side effects
1. The high amount of vitamin K may reduce the effectiveness of anticoagulation medicine
2. Causing additive effects for women who are under estrogen replacement therapy or taking the oral contraceptive pill.
3. It may cause stomach upset and diarrhea

Herbal Anise, the Natural Laxative with No Side Effects
Scientists may have found a natural health food for the treatment of constipation, some studies suggested.
Constipation is a condition of the digestive system characterized by the infrequent of bowel movements due to the hard and dry of the stools.
Most people with long-term constipation experience symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating and feeling of not completely passed the bowel movement.
Untreated or a prolonged period of constipation is associated with the complications of hemorrhoids, anal fissure or fecal impaction.
Constipation is the most common gastro disorders in the US. According to Self-reported constipation, about 2% of the population describe constant or frequent intermittent episodes of constipation.
Women and adults ages 65 and older are at a higher risk of constipation.
A laxative is the primary treatment of patients with long-term constipation. However, long-term intake of the substances can adduct the function of bowel natural movement.
Some researchers cautioned that laxatives may cause side serious side effects, including bloody stools. severe cramps or pain, weakness or unusual tiredness, sometimes rectal bleeding and imbalance of salts and minerals in the body.
If you are currently using laxative please make sure you know all the side effects and how to deal with them, including the interreaction of laxatives with other medications.
Herbal Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region.
The popular herb has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, stimulant, and tonic agent to treat head-lice and mites, increase blood pressure, prevent formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract and menstrual cramps, etc.
Ingredients
Besides the main ingredient Anethole, it also contains, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.
Anise has been used as a laxative in assisting bowel movement in folk medicine worldwide, especially in Asia.
In the study to reaffirm the traditional use of herbal Anise for the treatment of constipation, researchers at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Su, conducted an experiment to examine the effects of a phytotherapeutic formula in Brazil.
The formula contains Pimpinella anisum L.(Anise), Foeniculum vulgare Miller, Sambucus nigra L., and Cassia augustifolia.
The randomized, crossover, placebo-controlled, single-blinded trial included 20 patients with chronic constipation according to the criteria of the American Association of Gastroenterology.
Half of the subjects were received the phytotherapic compound for a 5-day period, whereas the other half were received a placebo for the same period.
Both treatment periods were separated by a 9-day washout period followed by the reverse treatment for another 5-day period.
After examining the two phases of the reported constipation questionnaire and assessing the intestinal transit, straining, stool consistency and sensation of fecal obstruction or incomplete evacuation in the last 24 hours filled by patients on a daily basis, researchers found that patients received the formula show a statistically significant improvement of bowel function, but the quality of life did not show significant differences among the study periods, according to the WHOQOL-Bref.
The phytotherapic compound processed a laxative efficacy and is a safe alternative option for the treatment of constipation.
Further analysis also suggested that the phytotherapic compound is found to exert a small reduction in serum potassium levels during the active treatment.
Observation of clinical variables such as arterial blood pressure, heart frequency, and laboratory data did not show significant changes during the study, an indication of no adverse effects.
Dr. Picon PD, the lead author said, "The findings of this randomized controlled trial allow to conclude that the phytotherapic compound assessed has laxative efficacy and is a safe alternative option for the treatment of constipation".
Taken altogether, herbal Anise used alone or combined with other herbal medicine may be considered an adjunct therapy for the treatment of constipation without inducing adverse effects
