Herbal Coltsfoot Protects Intestinal Mucosal Barrier Against the Risk of Colitis

Colitis is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.

The disease can be caused by infection, such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis(CD)), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis.

Most cases of colitis are involved in the damage of the intestinal mucosal barrier, particularly to those of ulcerative colitis.

Epidemiologically, damage and a reduction of gut bacteria by dietary chemicals, such as antibiotics of the protective mucus layer and the underlying tissue by the poorly inactivated digestive proteases induced both UC and CD.

The intestinal mucosal barrier is the outermost inner layer of the lining of the intestines which plays an essential role to ensure the adequate containment of undesirable luminal contents within the intestine and preserves the ability to absorb nutrients.

Additionally, the intestinal mucosal barrier also processes various immunological mediators, including cytokines and chemokines stimulated by gut microbiota and host immune responses, thus maintaining a well-balanced relationship between gut microbes and the host immune system.

In other words, the intestinal mucosal barrier protects the colonic integrity by interacting with the gut microbiota and the immune response to prevent the inflammation of the colon that causes the onset of colitis.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of year to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), researchers examined the anti-colitis effect of Tussilagone (TSL), a major component of Tussilago farfara.

On mice subjected to acute colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), tussilagone showed a significant protective effect by ameliorating weight loss, and colonic inflammatory damage.

Proteins associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines such as the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 and the activity of myeloperoxidase in colonic tissues were inhibited by tussilagone-treated mice.

Furthermore, tussilagone treatment reduced the numbers of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) in the induction of cytokines and increased the numbers of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) involved the production of antioxidant enzymes in nuclei of colonic tissues.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " tussilagone treatment attenuated DSS-induced colitis in mice through inhibiting the activation of NF-κB and inducing Nrf2 pathways, indicating that tussilagone is a potent therapeutic candidate for the treatment of intestinal ".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Anise, The Hepatoprotective Effects Functional Herb

Anise may have a potential and substantial protective effect to prevent liver damage and diseases, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

Liver disease is a medical condition characterized by damage or injury of the liver tissues, affecting 1 in 4 Canadians, according to the statistic. The disease can also be inherited genetically from the parent.
In the evaluation of the liver protective effect of Anise in the mice induced liver toxicity by injection of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), researchers found that Anise application significantly reduced production of reactive oxygen species in the liver tissue in initiated a chain reaction to induced tissue damage through its antioxidants activities, observed by oxidative stress markers.

The hepatoprotective effects of Anise not only protected against liver necrosis but also correlated with elevated serum IL-6 cytokine in response to infections and tissue injuries and in contributed to host defense through the stimulation of acute phase infection without inducing inflammation and activated hepatic STAT3 in facilitated lipid peroxidation.

Administered Anise also reduced oxidative stress in expression of several oxidative markers including liver Malondialdehyde (MDA), serum Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels through increased levels of hepatic antioxidants such as SOD and catalase in compared to non treated group.

Additionally, in the study of a total 36 Sprague-Dawley rats allocated into five groups with group I, II, and III received isotonic saline solution, olive oil, and CCl4, respectively and group IV received both Silibinin and CCl4 and group V with injection of Anise seed extract (PFO) and CCl4, researchers at the end study found that rats treated with CCL4 exhibited a significant liver damage through observation of levels of makers of liver AST and ALT.

Rats treated with Anise seed extract (PFO) revealed a lower serum AST and ALT levels in compared to those in the CCl4 group, although this was not as low as those in the silibinin group.

Moreover application of concentrations (1-1000 µg/ml) of essential oil and hydroalcoholic and n-hexane extracts isolated from Pimpinella anisum (anise), 1 h before the addition of 100 mM of CCl4, researchers indicated that liver cytotoxicity induced by injection of CCL4 was significantly decreased by antioxidant activity of n-hexane extract with concentrations of 10-50 µg/ml.

However, the administration of anise extracts and essential oil was found surprisingly in induced liver toxic effect with concentrations over 50 mµ/ml.

This result suggested that Pimpinella anisum. exhibited hepatoprotective effect against a foreign substance in precipitated liver damage in doses dependent manner.

In other words, overdoses of essential oil and hydroalcoholic and n-hexane extracts isolated from Anise can cause acute liver toxicity.

Taking all together, Anise with abundant phytochemicals may be considered as a functional herb for reduced risk and assisted standard therapy for the treatment of liver diseases, depending on further evaluation.

Whole food(herbal medicine), linking health benefits in the prevention, management, and treatment of diseases has placed an important role in human history over many centuries. The finding of whole food medication by renowned scientists all over the world to replace the single ingredient of Western medicine with little or no side effect has been difficult due to no commercial benefit and pattern right to producers.

Cat's claw found in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, is a genus Uncaria, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, used in traditional medicine over two thousand years as a tonic, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory and infectious agent, and to treat diarrhea, rheumatic disorders, acne, diabetes, cancer and diseases of the urinary tract, etc..

The chemical constituents of Cat's claw include ajmalicine, akuammigine, campesterol, catechin, carboxyl alkyl esters, chlorogenic acid, cinchonain, corynantheine, corynoxeine, daucosterol, epicatechin, harman, hirsuteine, hirsutine, iso-pteropodine, etc.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, becoming progressively worse and damaged other healthy tissues, sometimes spreading to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death

The herbal whole herb medicine may be used for the treatment of various cancers. In a recent study, cat's claw chemotypes showed a directed influence on genotoxicity and cytotoxicity against nonmalignant and malignant human cell lines.

In T24 and RT4 human bladder cancer cell lines, bark samples extracted by dynamic maceration, alkaloids or isomerized derivative significant induced cytotoxic activity in dose-dependent
manner, leading to cell death in the tumor cell divisive process.

According to the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in joint study with other renowned institutions, Quinovic acid glycosides purified fraction (QAPF) of U.tomentosa found in Cat' claw decreased the growth and viability and protected against cell proliferation in both T24 and RT4 cell lines, through interfering with the inflammation, immunity, cell proliferation, differentiation pathway.

In a total of fifty-one volunteers recruited with the median age was 64 (range, 33-85) years, and 47% of patients were female, cat's claw improves quality of life and symptom of fatigue in patients with advanced cancer.

Dr. Dreifuss AA, the lead author at the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University said, that In vivo, UT hydroalcoholic extract demonstration of both antitumoral and antioxidant effects. The antineoplastic activity may be the result in regulated redox and metabolism homeostasis as well as anti-neoplastic effects.

Taking together, the whole herb Cat's claw may be used for the prevention and treatment of cancers, but the prescribed quality must be given by the herbal doctor to reduce the risk of overdoses.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada's Emodin Kills Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Cells, in Vivo and Vitro

Herbal Cascara sagrada may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), some scientists suggested.

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue.

The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths.

In 2007, lung cancer causes the death of 158,683 people, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women.

Most common types of lung cancers include
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung,

* Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube

* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

Non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer, usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.

The most common risk factors of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are long term smoking and people exposed to long-term second-hand smoke.

Dr. Ryo Maeda MD, the lead scientists in the study to investigate the association between cigarette smoking and clinicopathological characteristics of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to evaluate its significance as a predictor of recurrence after resection showed that
* The 5 years of the survival rate of never and ever smokers in patients with stage I is 92%, compared to 76%, in smokers.

* The 5-year recurrence-free proportions (RFPs) for never and ever smokers were 89% compared to 80%, in smokers.

At the final report, the doctors wrote, "Smoking history showed the different impact on postoperative recurrence in patients with NSCLC between stage I and stages II and III, and depending on histology in stage I patients" and "Disease stages should be considered while evaluating smoking history as a predictor of recurrence".

These results not only indicated smoking has a strong impact on the increased incidence of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and but also reduces years of survival.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

The plant bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc., effect.

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, Cascara sagrada also contains anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of nonsmall cell lung cancer, researchers examined the effect of Emodin, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor is a natural anthraquinone derivative found in the roots and rhizomes of numerous plants including herbal Cascara Sagrada.

Compared to the effect of cisplatin, a chemo drug, Emodin, exposure to the human NSCLC cells to emodin decreased cisplatin-elicited in the inhibition of the metaplasia and tumor development and increased the inability of a protein associated to cell DNA repaired.

Application of emodin alone or combined with cisplatin significantly decreased expression of cell repaired protein in carrying a portion of the code to other parts of the cell for processing.

Furthermore, the combination of Emodine and cisplatin decreased the proliferation and enhanced cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Although the study did not mention the effect of Emodin used combined with cisplatin have elicited the side effect caused by cisplatin, Emodin may lead to novel therapy in the future for NSCLC through the down-regulating expression of proteins associated to tumor spreading.

Further analysis of the Emodin effect on the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) scientists at the Hsinchu Hospital investigates the role of ERCC1 and Rad51 in emodin-mediated cytotoxicity in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells.

Where ERCC1 is a protein associated with cell repair and DNA recombination and RAD51 is a protein associated with the assists in the repair of DNA double-strand breaks.

Injection of Emodin showed a reduction of the expression of ERCC1 and Rad51 protein levels as well as mRNA levels in four different NSCLC cell lines correlated with the inactivation of the MKK1/2-ERK1/2 pathway involving cells proliferation.

The result suggested that the application of Emodin exerts a similar effect as those of U0126, an MKK1/2 inhibitor used in conventional medicine for the inhibition of cellular ERCC1 and Rad51 protein and mRNA levels.

A combination of Emodin and U0126 could enhance emodin cytotoxic activity against the tested cell lines.

Dr. the lead scientist suggested these results showed that Emodin isolated from herbal Cascara Sagrada inhibited the nonsmall lung cancer through cytotoxic effect by blocking the protein associated with cell proliferation to induce apoptosis.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed the bioactive compound Emodin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

Herbal Calendula, the Natural and Potent Neuroprotective Functional Herb

Herbal Calendula may have a potential and profound effect in protecting the integrity of the neurons against the onset of neuroprotective effects.

The neuroprotective effect is a protection against the damage of the brain cells.

The nerve system is a complex network including the brain and spinal cord with a unique function in transmitting information or signals from and to the brain and spinal cord from different parts of the body.

The nerve system in the human has evolved over thousands of the year to enhance the survivals of the human species by the rapid response to the change of the environmental factors and adapting to the change of environment.

The causes of neuro diseases are associated with the damage or dysfunction of the central nervous system (CNS), including the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord.

However, some of the most common causes of neuro diseases are associated with neurotoxicity, the term which refers to damage to the brain or spinal cord caused by exposure to natural or man-made toxic substances, leading to gradual loss of neurons that interfere with the function of the nerve system in transmitting information to other parts of the body.

There are many factors associated with the onset of neurotoxicities, such as characteristics of the neurotoxin, the doses of exposure, and the ability to metabolize and excrete the toxin.

Accumulation of toxic chemicals over the long-term in the nerve system can overwhelm the protective factors, leading to neurotoxic symptoms of paralysis or weakness in the limbs. altered sensation, tingling, and numbness in the limbs, prolonged headache, and vision loss, depending on the brain area of toxicity.

In the elderly, the neuro-toxicity is also found to speed up the onset of neurodegenerative diseases, leading to symptoms of loss of memory and cognitive dysfunction, such as Alzheimer's disease.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

In the concern that oxidative stress (OS) and nitric oxide mechanisms proposed in 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP)-induced neurotoxicity, scientists at the Sree Siddaganga College of Pharmacy examined the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and estrogenic effects of Calendula officinalis Linn. flower extract (COE) neuroprotective against the experimental model.

The study included numbers of rat induced neurotoxicity by the injection of 3-NP.

Observing behavioral changes, OS and striatal damage in rat brain suggested that neurotoxic rat was accompanied by significant alterations in animal behavior, oxidative defense system evidenced by raised levels of LPO and nitrite concentration, and depletion of antioxidant levels.

These examinations showed that 3-NP caused significant damage to the rat brain by increasing the expression of free radicals and suppressing the production of antioxidant enzymes by the host body.

The injection also enhanced the production of inflammatory cytokines which have a strong effect in the blood vessels constriction and the loss of neuronal cells in the striatal region

Application of the herbal extract significantly attenuated behavioral alterations, oxidative damage and striatal neuronal loss in 3-NP-treated animals.

These results showed that COE is protective against 3-NP-induced neurotoxicity in rats through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and estrogenic properties.

With an aim to determine the effect of Calendula officinalis Linn. flower extract (COE) in the inhibition of excess monosodium glutamate (MSG), a popular flavor enhancer used in food industries in the induction of neurotoxicity, researchers conducted an experiment to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of COE on MSG-induced neurotoxicity in rats.

Adult Wistar rats selected to the study were administered systemically for 7 days with MSG and after one h of MSG injection before treated with COE (100 and 200 mg/kg) orally.

Before treated with COE, an infected rat showed a significant alteration in animal behavior, oxidative defense (raised levels of LPO, nitrite concentration, depletion of antioxidant levels) and hippocampal neuronal histology.

These results indicated that MSG displays similar effects to those of 3-NP in facilitating the imbalance of the ratio of the free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in the tested rats.

Observation of the result after injection of COE, researchers found that COE only restores the balance of the free radicals and antioxidant ratio but also inhibits the death of neuron cells in the brain.

The neuroprotective effect of COE was attributed to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, suggested by Dr. Shivasharan BD, the lead scientist.

Taken altogether, Herbal Calendula may be considered a functional herb for the prevention of neurotoxicity and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of neuro diseases induced by toxicity.

Herbal Catnip, the Natural Insect Repellent, Scientists Suggested

Scientists may have found a natural repellent which protects our skin against insect biting without inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.

In the rating of products that work best against mosquitoes and ticks, the consumer report found that deet (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is one of the best to protect us against mosquitoes and ticks, Any products that contain 15 to 30 percent deep can provide long-lasting protection.

However, large oral doses of deep were found to induce symptoms of nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, and seizures. In serious cases, deet can cause cardiotoxicity. Contact exposure to deet also has the potential for dermal effects, leading to numbness and redness of the applied area, according to the study "Neurotoxicity and Mode of Action of N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET)" by Dr. Daniel R. Swale.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The herb has bused use in herbal medicine as an insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children restlessness and nervousness, fevers, cold and flu, skin irritations stimulate sweating, promote menstruation, etc..

Ingredients
Besides the major constituent of terpenoid nepetalactone, the herb also contains α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Triplal, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc.

In the study to evaluate the effects herbal Catnip as an effective mosquito repellent against several Aedes and Culex species, both topically and spatially, researchers launched a study of the essential oil of the herb in laboratory bioassays.

Catnip essential oil (at a dosage of 20 mg) resulted in average repellency rates of 96% against stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) and 79% against houseflies, Musca domestica (L.), respectively.

Catnip oil use as a potential biting and nuisance insect repellent in urban settings was a moderate irritant with non-irritating to the eye.

Dr. Zhu JJ, at the final report, said, " In comparison with other U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-approved mosquito repellents (DEET, picaridin and p-menthane-3,8-diol), catnip oil can be considered a relatively safe repellent, which may cause minor skin irritation".

Additionally, in the findings of a safer fly control strategies, researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (ARS-USDA) launched an investigation of the effectiveness of catnip (Nepeta cataria L.) oil and its constituent compounds, nepetalactones, as stable fly repellents.

Injection of essential oil of catnip reduced the feeding of stable flies by >96% in an in vitro bioassay system, compared with other sesquiterpene-rich plant oils.

After taking into account co and confounders Dr.Zhu JJ, the lead author said, " In field trials, two formulations of catnip oil provided >95% protection and were effective for up to 6 h when tested on cattle. Catnip oil also acted as a strong oviposition repellent and reduced gravid stable fly oviposition by 98%".

Taken all together, there is no doubt that Catnip essential oil can be considered an effective insect repellent natural remedy.

Herbal Andrographis, The Male Contraceptive Whole Herb Medicine?

Andrographis paniculata, the forgotten herb showed the ability to influence the male reproductive organ as a contraceptive option contradictively, a renowned institutes study suggested.

Andrographis paniculata, also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, ......

According to the Bharathidasan University, andrographolide, a major chemical constituent of andrographis paniculata affected the process in which spermatozoa are produced from spermatogonial stem cells in the testis by interring the dividing spermatogenic cell lines.

In a 3-month-old male Wistar albino rats at two dose levels, for 48 days, rats fed with andrographolide exerted contraceptive effects by inducing decreased sperm counts, increased in-motile spermatozoa, and several possessed abnormalities.

Dr. Akbarsha MA, the lead researcher said, "the study points to a male reproductive toxic effect of this compound(andrographolide) when used as a therapeutic".

Unfortunately, also in male Wistar albino rats study, orally administering extract of Andrographis paniculata of 0, 20, 200, and 1000 mg/kg of body weight per day, for 65 days prior to mating and 21 days during mating, treated group showed no effect on testosterone levels and fertility indices and sperm count and sperm motility when compared with the control.

Furthermore, in the comparison of Kan Jang--a fixed combination of Andrographis paniculata special extract (SHA-10) and Acanthopanax senticosus with Valeriana officinalis and Panax ginseng, Kan Jang decode exhibited no significant negative effect of Kan Jang on male semen quality and fertility, but rather a increased number of spermatozoids in the whole ejaculate in compared to others herbal treated group.
The conflict results of the above studies may be due to types of research design, small sample size and quality of herbal medicine used....., but regardless of the above conclusions, large sample size and multi centers studies are necessary to resolve this contradiction.
