Garlic, The Best whole food medicine for reduced risk and complications of Cardiovascular diseases

Cardiovascular diseases refer to heart diseases, affecting millions of people in the world. According to statistic, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015, Hyperlipidaemia and hypertension are the risk factors of the diseases.

There are many causes of heart disease. Anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease. Here are some early indication of heart disease symptoms:
Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

A recent study suggested that garlic may be used for the prevention and treatment of heart disease.

According to Nihon University, organosulfur compounds found in garlic induce the functions of our body in attenuating the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Kulczyński B, the lead author insisted that the effectiveness of garlic for the prevention and treatment of heart diseases probably is the result of the whole herb in the demonstration of their antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.

Other researchers suggested the role of garlic in alleviating the risks of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular complications is due to its modulatory effects on hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and oxidative stress.

Garlic also has the potential to treat mild hypertension, decrease hypercholesterolemia, and prevent atherosclerosis, according to the joint study lead by the Jordan University of Science and Technologe,

Dr. Alali FQ, the lead author of the study also said, " Garlic (Allium sativum L.), a top-selling herbal dietary supplement, is renowned for its wide range of beneficial effects, particularly in the treatment and prevention of CVD".

In fact, data published after the year 2000 convincingly pointed out that garlic reduces the cardiovascular risk substantially, through inhibition of abnormal plasma lipids, oxidized low-density lipoproteins (LDL), abnormal platelet aggregation and high blood pressure.

Adding garlic into one diet may reduce the risk of the diseases if accompanied with the intake of more vegetables, fruits, and change of lifestyle.

Garlic - The Testosterone Booster Whole Food Medicine?

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure, cholesterol, natural antibiotic, etc.

Garlic may be the next generation of natural testosterone reducer or inducer? High level of testosterone may alter the balance between ROS production and antioxidant defenses that induce testicular antioxidants and free radicals, including glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) and ameliorate the reduction in testosterone levels.

Dr. Prasad S lead research at the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, diallyl sulfide (DAS), a constituent of garlic, exerted antioxidant activities against testosterone-induced oxidative stress in male Swiss albino mice, by significantly restored the testosterone-induced antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation.

The effects of garlic supplementation on protein metabolism also suggested that dietary supplementation with 0.8 g/100 g garlic alters hormones associated with protein anabolism by increasing testicular testosterone and decreasing plasma corticosterone in rats fed a high protein diet.

Overproduction of testosterone may associate to increase the risk of prostate cancer, caused by an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants.

According to the Tunis El Manar University, intake of garlic impacted on the male reproductive system by the increased number of tubules deprived of spermatozoa. In addition, garlic fractions induced apoptosis of testicular gem cells.

In fact, like all-natural phytochemicals, garlic is both a testosterone booster and testosterone reducer, depending on the levels of testosterone in the body and amount of garlic intake.

Conflicting results have been found between total testosterone and subsequent prostate cancer, probably due to conflicting study designs, definitions, and methodologies. Therefore, the use of garlic in increasing sexual desire should be taken with care.

Ginger, The Pungent Spice Suppresses the Symptoms and Disability of Osteoarthritis

Ginger may be considered a natural whole food to treat osteoarthritis with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease, as a result of the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones were worn and torn down over time. The disease affects millions of people worldwide.

In contrast to the general belief, osteoarthritis only damages the joints of hands, knees, but also cause inflammation of the joints in your hips and spine.

The condition is a slow development disease, often starts in the 40s and 50s and affects almost all people to some degree by age 80.

The common risk factors of osteoarthritis are aging, gender, improper healing of injured joint at a young age, obesity and bone deformity. However, people who have a job with tasks that place repetitive stress on a particular joint are associated with the onset of osteoarthritis in most industrial countries.

Dr. Berran Yucesoy, the lead author in the concerns of the repetitive occupation associated with the risk of osteoarthritis launched an investigation to examine the occupational that contribute to this debilitating condition.

The results of searching the medical data on PubMed using the search terms osteoarthritis, occupation, work, and genetics wrote, " One of the most common occupational risk factors for knee OA is heavy physical workload" and "Other risk factors include frequent exposure to several biomechanical stressors such bending of the knee, kneeling or squatting, standing for long hours (≥ 2 hours per day), walking ≥ 3 km/day, regular stair climbing, heavy lifting (≥ 10 kg), jumping, and vibration".

Believe or not, the researcher continued, " a more than the five-fold greater risk of knee OA among workers ≥ 55 years who were exposed to a combination of heavy lifting (> 25 kg) and kneeling/squatting or climbing stairs".

If your occupation is in the group mentioned in the study, you are likely to develop osteoarthritis at a younger age. Please make sure you are taking all preventive measure to reduce the risk of the onset of the disease at the later life

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The pungent and kitchen spice has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find the evidence that ginger powder consumption can relieve pain and inflammation due to specific anti-inflammatory phytochemical constituents, researchers at the joint investigation led by the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences launched a study to examine the effect of ginger supplementation on proinflammatory factors.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 3-month clinical trial investigating knee osteoarthritis includes 120 participants assigned to one of two groups: the ginger group (GG) or the placebo group (PG).

Participants in the GG intervention received capsules containing 500 mg of ginger powder, while PG participants received capsules filled with 500 mg starch.

At 3 months, the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) cytokines were found to decrease substantially in the GG compared to the PG.

Dr. Mozaffari-Khosravi H, the lead scientist wrote in the final report " ginger supplementation may have promising benefits for knee osteoarthritis".

Furthermore, the assessment of the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) by carrying out a systematic literature search followed by meta-analyses on selected studies in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years also suggested that

* Ginger intake shows a statistically significant pain reduction with a low degree of inconsistency among trials.

* The ginger treatment group also demonstrates a statistically significant reduction in disability.

* Patients given ginger are more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo. And,

* Ginger was modestly efficacious and reasonably safe for the treatment of OA.

Taken altogether, through the inhibition of pro-inflammatory factors, ginger and ginger supplement may be considered for the prevention and adjunct therapies combined with primary medicine for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

Herbal Bilberry, the Best Neuro-Protective Functional Remedy, According to Medical Literature

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy which processes a neuron-protective effect against brain diseases, according to studies.

Neurological disorders are diseases associated with the brain, spine, and nerves. In other words, they are diseases of the central nervous system.

There are many risk factors involved in the incidence of neurological disorders, including unhealthy lifestyle, infections, genetics preposition, and physical injury.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of levels of free radicals and antioxidants caused either by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes or both.

Free radicals can be produced internally by normal cellular metabolism or from external sources such as the air we breathe, smoking. Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons on the outer ring.

In order for them to maintain stable, free radicals must either donate an electron or intercept an electron from other atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not stop[ed until the outer ring electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Oxidative stress has been found to be a major risk for the onset of neurological disorders in the Western world, particularly in North American.

Dr. Carvalho AN, the lead scientist in the assessment of oxidative stress and antioxidants in neurological diseases, said, "Oxidative stress is a pathological feature common to a multitude of neurological diseases. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is the main mechanism underlying this cellular redox imbalance".

And, "overview of the main players in oxidative stress and outline evidence of their involvement in Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis".

The results clearly suggested the impact of oxidative stress in the facilitation of the onset of neurodegenerative diseases.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient which processes neuroprotective effects evaluated the activity of Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) anthocyanoside (VMA) and/or its main anthocyanidin constituents (cyanidin, delphinidin, and malvidin) against retinal damage.

According to the assays, in the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) induced cell damage and radical activation by 3-(4-morpholinyl) sydnonimine hydrochloride (SIN-1), injection of VMA and all three anthocyanidins significantly inhibited SIN-1-induced neurotoxicity and free radical activation.

Furthermore, VMA also significantly inhibited the N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA)-induced morphological retinal damage compared to other derivatives. and increased apoptosis of the damage cells in the ganglion cell layer.
Moreover, VMA at a concentration-dependently inhibited lipid peroxidation in mouse forebrain homogenates. In other words, VMA prevented the accumulation of lipid peroxidation in the neurons, the major cause of the neuron damage.

The findings suggested that VMA and its anthocyanidins process neuroprotective effects via an anti-oxidation mechanism in vitro and in vivo models of retinal diseases.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about bilberry neuroprotective activity, researchers examined the antioxidants richly present in bilberry fruits' effects on diabetes-related brain dysfunctions.

αCaMKII in hippocampal neurons from non-diabetic, diabetic and diabetic rats before fed with an extract of bilberry fruit showed a reduction of swollen and the lengths of the neuronal fibers.

Interestingly, diabetic rats fed with bilberry fruit showed a αCaMKII-positive nerve fiber significantly longer compared to the groups of diabetic and control rats.

The results strongly suggested that bilberry fruits influence the morphology of and possibly exhibit beneficial and neuroprotective effects on hippocampal neurons during diabetes through the expression of antioxidants.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds such as anthocyanidin and its constituents cyanidin, delphinidin, and malvidin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of neuro-diseases, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Anise in Reduced Risk of Infectious Diseases Through its Antiviral Activities

Essential oil Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of viral infectious diseases, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, ....

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the investigation of the effects of several essential oils, including Anise in against expression of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in vitro on RC-37 cells, using a plaque reduction assay, researchers found that application of essential oil of concentrations (IC50) at doses of 0.016%, 0.0075%, 0.007%, 0.004%, 0.003%, and 0.0015% demonstrated significant effects linearly in ameliorate persistent infection spreading of sexually transmitted disease of the virus.

A maximum dose, essential oil of Ansie without inducing cytotoxicity to healthy cells exerted an inhibitory effect against different stages during the viral infectious cycle and plaque formation by more than 90%.

Interestingly, all essential oils displayed no inhibitory effect cells prior to infection with HSV-2 or after the adsorption period.

These results suggested that injection of Ansis essential oil can only affect HSV-2 after penetrating into the viral envelope.

In compared to the inhibitory effects of all essential oil, Anise exhibited a less selectivity activity in compared to essential oil isolated from chamomile.

Further demonstration of Anise antiviral activity, using 3 antiviral and immunostimulating substances (LC1, LC2 and LC3) isolated from a hot water extract of seeds of Pimpinella anisum by combination of anion-exchange, gel filtration, and hydrophobic interaction column chromatographies researchers at the University of Toyama suggested that the lignin and carbohydrate molecules(CLs) bonded physically or chemically with each other of LC1, LC2 and LC3 exerted a significantly antiviral activities in reduced expression of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and -2), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and measles virus.

Moreover, the application of all LCs substances inhibited the virus induced-adsorption to the host cell surface by direct inactivating the virus's penetration through enhanced nitric oxide (NO) production by inducing iNOS mRNA and protein expression in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells in response to viral attacks.

These result of rival inhibitory effect of Anise LCs substances not only prevented virus in alternated the healthy cells DNA in the initiated infectious cell proliferation but also inhibited production of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin 10 caused by overreaction of immune response in elevated expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in induction of healthy cell damage and cell apoptosis.

The above differentiation was supported by the study in the evaluated the effect of limonene, the major bioactive compound found in Fennel and Ansie in inhibited risk and progression and treatment of dengue, a potentially fatal mosquito-borne infection of 50 million cases per year with 2.5 billion people who are vulnerable to the disease.

According to the results, the application of essential oil using WHO procedures displayed a substantial effect against third instar larvae of Ae. aegypti for 24 h.

More specifically, the result of inhibition of over 99% of tested virus was attributed to major constituent (-)-limonene at lethal concentrations LC50, C90, and LC99.

Taken together, Anise and its major bioactive monoterpenes may be considered as a possessed potency as functional food ingredients against infectious diseases caused by viral invasion.

Herbal Artichoke, the Anti Inflammatory Bioactive Compound

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system against the stimuli and foreign pathogens which try to enter the body through wound or injury.

In the acute phase of infection, after receiving the message transmitted by the central nervous system, the immune macrophages stimulating the blood palette to cover the affected site and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to protect the body against microorganisms.

Some anti-inflammatory cytokines in this phase may also switch to proinflammatory activity, causing overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines.

In some cases, depending on the severity of the wound, overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines may cause damage and death of nearby cells, leading to the formation of scars.

Most common symptoms of the acute phase of infection are pain, swelling and redness in the affected areas.

If the immune macrophages kill off the foreign pathogens in the acute phase of infection, the inflammatory progress proceeds to other stages including the stage one of acute phase of infection followed by the repair and regeneration stage, where collagen fibers are formed then by the remodeling and maturation stage, where the new tissue continue to remodel, strengthen and improve.

Chronic inflammation occurs if the immune system can not kill off all invaders within a set period, it will adapt to the news change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, the major cause of various chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on the finding a natural therapeutics for the treatment of Porphyromonas gingivalis, the disease has been found to induce the expression of inflammatory cytokines that promote inflammatory bone destruction, investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of an extract from Cynara scolymus L. and its pharmacologically effective compound cynaropicrin, a sesquiterpene lactone, on human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs).

Human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs)used in the study were induced inflammation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Artichoke bioactive compound injection inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS-stimulated HGFs in a dose-dependent manner.

P. gingivalis LPS-induced expression of enzymes and proteins in the cellular response to inflammation were also suppressed by cynaropicrin.

The additional analysis also suggested that cynaropicrin's inhibition of P. gingivalis LPS-induced production pro-inflammatory expression may be due to the inhibition of the activation of the inflammatory pathways.

Dr. Hayata M, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that cynaropicrin may be useful for preventing periodontal diseases and could prove valuable in the development of more effective preventative approaches for periodontal diseases".

In order to reaffirm the efficacy of artichoke anti-inflammatory activity, researchers at the University of Sfax examined the Artichoke Leaves Extracts (ALE) phytochemical and antioxidant activity by several methods such as DDPH, ABTS, FRAP, and beta-carotene bleaching test.

In the carrageenan (Carr) model induced paw edema, EtOH extract of ALE contained the highest phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin contents exerted the strongest antioxidants activities, according to the DDPH (94.23%), ABTS (538.75 mmol), FRAP assay (542.62 umol), and β-carotene bleaching (70.74%) compared to the other extracts of ALE.

Moreover, administration of EtOH extract at dose 400 mg/kg/bw exhibited a maximum inhibition of inflammation induced by Carr for 3 and 5 hours compared to reference group Indomethacin (Indo).

Based on the finding, Dr. Ben Salem M, the lead scientist wrote, "ALE displayed high potential as a natural source of minerals and phytochemicals compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties".

Taken altogether, artichoke processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Andrographis, The Best Whole Herb for Reduced Risk and Treatment of Gastric/Stomach Cancer

Scientists may have found a chemical constituent isolated from Andrographis paniculata, for reduced risk and treatment of gastric cancer, a respectable institute study suggested.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...

Gastric/Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

According to the joint study lead by the Chosun University, Andrographolide, a natural compound isolated from Andrographis paniculata, exerted potentiated apoptosis and reduction of the ability of a cell to form clones triggered by recombinant human tumor necrosis factor of signaling systemic inflammation involved immune stimulation.

The study also found that Andrographolide enhances TRAIL(a protein functioning as a ligand in regulated the process of cell death)-induced apoptosis through interfering of cell division through a protein functioning involved the process of cell death and ROS generation in gastric cancer.

Dr. Lim SC, the lead author said, "Exposure of GC cells to andrographolide altered the expression level of several growth-inhibiting and apoptosis-regulating proteins, including death receptors".

Also in support of the analysis of the effects of Andrographis on gastric cancer, the First Affiliated Hospital study suggested the effect of andrographolide on suppressed on adhesion of gastric cancer cells to the activated endothelial cells through blocking E-selectin(an antigen) expression in response to cancer cells in infiltrated the inflammatory system.

In three gastric cancer cell lines (SGC7901, MGC803, BGC823), with Andrographis significantly decreased gastric cancer cell adherence to stimulated endothelial cells by inhibited the E-selectin expression. through cytokines' effect of the immune system.

Taking together, Andrographis paniculata may be used as a therapeutically promising product for reduced risk and treatment of gastric cancer, probably due to the procession of Andrographolide, an active compound of the herb, but intake of the large amount should only be prescribed by herbalist to avoid toxicity.
