Ginger, The Best Functional Food For Symptoms of Nausea and Vomiting

Scientists may have discovered a pungent and kitchen spice that processes a significant effect in reducing nausea and vomiting with no side effects, according to some studies.

Nausea and vomiting are the natural protection of the digestive system reacted to many causes, including food poisoning, gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), an ulcer, or bulimia.

Morning sickness or nausea and vomiting are common experiences in pregnancy, affecting 70–80% of all pregnant women.

Nausea and vomiting that often develop by five to six weeks of pregnancy are the results of the rise of the hormone estrogen in the early stage of pregnancy. The syndrome may get even worse in women have a sensitive stomach which tries to adapt to the changes of pregnancy.

Morning sickness in the pregnancy may seem obvious in general population, however in a group of women with severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy due to hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), an entity distinct from nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), may lead to significant maternal and fetal morbidity if untreated.

Dr.Noel M. Lee, the lead author at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in the study " Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy" said, "Various metabolic and neuromuscular factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of NVP and HG; however, their exact cause is unknown. Consequently, treatment of NVP and HG can be difficult as neither the optimal targets for treatment nor the full effects of potential treatments on the developing fetus are known".

Where hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a pregnancy complication characterized by severe nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and possibly dehydration.

Other causes of nausea and vomiting are due to the prolonged period of exposure to stress and long-term fatigue.

Patients who are having chemotherapy are associated with an increased risk of nausea and vomiting because of the injection of chemo drugs can affect parts of the stomach and brain that detect toxic (poisonous) substances.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The pungent spice has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to clarify the effect of ginger extract in treating chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), a joint study led by Taipei Medical University-Shuang Ho Hospital was conducted to determine whether ginger could be used to treat CINV, which was interpreted using the PICOS (patient, problem/population, intervention, comparison, outcome, study) framework, with P being patients who underwent chemotherapy.

After searching the studies in English from 2000 to 2017 databases. 2 on a total of 10 studies with complete data. was included in the meta-analysis using Comprehensive Meta-analysis.

Ginger exerted a significant effect in reducing the symptoms of nausea and vomiting with the odds ratio (OR) of 0.71

Further analysis also discovered that ginger could only reduce acute CINV in patients, particularly acute vomiting.

After taking additional ]assessment of the co and confounders, Dr. Chang WP the lead scientist said, "Ginger displayed significant efficacy with regard to controlling CINV in the experimental groups".

In the reaffirming the effect of ginger in the early pregnancy symptoms of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), a joint study led by the Iran University of Medical Sciences launched an evaluation to compare the effects of ginger, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and placebo.

The triple-blind clinical trial on pregnant women suffering mild to moderate NVP between 6 and 16 weeks of pregnancy.

In these women ginger, 500 mg twice daily, vitamin B6 40 mg twice daily and placebo twice daily were administered for 4 d.

The severity of NVP was evaluated 24 h before entering the study and up to 4 d after using medications and results were compared among the three groups.

The women of the three groups did not have significant differences according to age, gestational age, parity, and severity of each symptom before treatment and educational status.

After assessing the returned questionnaires, researchers indicated
* Ginger and vitamin B6 could reduce the severity of all items of Rhodes questionnaire significantly.

* Ginger and vitamin B6 were more effective than placebo

* The total score of Rhodes did not show a significant difference between a ginger and vitamin B6 (p = .128). Ginger was more effective for nausea (intensity and distress).

These results once illustrate the efficacy of ginger in the treatment of nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy.

Taken all together, there is no doubt that ginger may be used as a functional food for the treatment of nausea and vomiting in both early pregnancy and side effects of chemo treatment.

Fennel Seeds, A Potent Galactogenisis in Increased Milk Secretion in Lactation Period

Fennel may have potential and therapeutic effects in improved milk secretion, some scientists suggested.

In the finding, the natural sources for the answer of the question of produced enough milk in women who face challenges in their efforts to breast-feed their infants, researchers at the CANADIAN JOURNAL OF MIDWIFERY RESEARCH AND PRACTICE conducted a study of a total of 23 women at one to four months postpartum to share their experiences with childbirth and postpartum self-care, suggested that out of 23 women interviewed, 4 women reported insufficient milk supply and 11 women showed an improvement of lactation by using galactagogue substances, including herbal medicine fennel.

According to the survey returned from these participants, four women used fennel seed or oil, and all considered herbal products was effective as a galactagogue. One learned about it from a friend, two from their midwives, and one from her mother who used it herself while breastfeeding.

These results suggested that herbal medicine including fennel may process a significant benefit in increased milk production but Dr. Rachel Emma Westfall, Ph.D. suggested that further investigation is necessary to validate this viability.

Although the mechanism in enhanced lactation effects of fennel seeds acting as galactagogues are little known, some scientists postulated that the result of fennel in increased milk secretion was attributed to the phytochemical anethole in the expression of estrogenic property.

Anethole, the main constituent of the essential oils of fennel and anise, has been considered as an active estrogenic agent by the actual pharmacologically active investigation.

Truly, according to the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group, in the evaluation of the fennel effect in increased milk production breastfeeding mothers suggested that anethole, the major bioactive compound isolated from fennel is considered weakly estrogenic agent and may increase breast milk production or assist with the ‘let-down’ reflex, through enhanced function of hormone oxytocin.

These results suggested that fennel as galactagogues may improve milk production by working, either directly or indirectly, on the hormonal pathways that control lactation.

In other words, the application of fennel restored the function of the hormone prolactin in the induction of milk formation and hormone oxytocin produced by the pituitary gland with function to contract special muscle cells around the alveoli in the breast to ensure the expulsion of milk.

To ensure these processes continued without interruption, the application of fennel seed also rebalance the hormone secretion by preventing the overproduction of estrogen and progesterone in reduced expression of the hormone prolactin in inhibited milk production. according to the results in animal models.

By blocking serum of estrogen and progesterone in blood circulation, fennel seed ensured that the pituitary gland continuously releases of prolactin in stimulated mammary gland cells in the secretion of milk.

Some researchers suggested the function of fennel in facilitated milk formation and secretion may also be as a result of increasing numbers of milk-secreting cells during the lactation state caused by sucking of the young by enhancing the growth of mammary alveolar growth, prolactin, or both.
Today, even with extensive researchers, there is little known about the mechanisms of fennel seeds in the enhanced production of milk during the lactation period. Some researchers concerned that overdoses of fennel seeds may cause potential adverse effects since dosages for galactagogues are mostly unquestioned and untested.

Taken together, fennel seeds may have a potential effect as galactogenic herbal medicine in increased milk formation and production. However, further study with a large sample size conducted by multiple centers is necessary to re-confirm its viability scientifically.

Cinnamon - The Best Whole Food Medicine for Reduced Risk and Progression of Cognitive impairment

According to Hoseo University, water extracts of Cinnamomum cassia Blume bark (CCB; Lauraceae), effectively prevent the cognitive dysfunction through the prevention of formation of amyloid-β in induced cell death and toxicity.

Cognitive impairment is considered as an early stage of dementia, affecting memory, language, thinking, and judgment

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, use in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

Administered orally of Cinnamomum zeylanicum (CZ) for a period of 21 days in animal model induced cognitive improvement through inhibition of a certain extent of oxidative stress.

In AD mice model, cinnamon reduced accumulation of soluble oligomeric assemblies of the β-amyloid polypeptide (Aβ) by inhibition of the formation of toxic Aβ oligomers induced toxicity of Aβ on neuronal cells, thus reducing the risk of accumulation of plagues which is the early signed of AD development.

Also in an animal study, the standardized lyophilized aqueous extract of cinnamon bark (LCZE) testing on learning and memory in rodents at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, p.o. dose levels against streptozotocin (STZ)-induced memory impairment, exhibited improved discrimination between a familiar object and a novel object and function of neurotransmitters activity and reduced oxidative stress parameters in both brain parts.

Cinnamon and its chemical components may be beneficial for patients in early state of Cognitive impairment. The use of herbal medicine should be taken with care as overdoses may induce toxicity.

Herbal Garlic - The Whole Food Medicine for Antiplatelet Aggregation

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotic, etc.

Several sulfur-containing compounds, isolated from garlic may be very effective in inhibition of platelet aggregation, recent study suggested.

Antiplatelet activity is the effect in decreased platelet aggregation and inhibited thrombus formation.

According to the Ochanomizu University, sulfur-containing compounds in garlic not only inhibited arachidonic acid metabolism but also suppressed aggregation in association with the function of the platelet plasma membrane.

In vitro, garlic mechanisms of action may be comparable to that of the clinically used drug clopidogrel, as the herb exerts antiaggregatory effects. Garlic extracts are acting by inhibition of the ADP pathway, an important physiological agonist of normal hemostasis and thrombosis.

Dr. MacDonald JA lead of researcher said, " The ability of an aromatic disulfide to inhibit platelet aggregation can be enhanced by appending an electron-withdrawing group to the aromatic ring. The results presented establish that the aromatic thiosulfonate is a very effective inhibitor of platelet aggregation"

Besides the sulfur compound, Ajoene, (E,Z)-4,5,9-trithiadodeca-1,6,11-triene 9-oxide, isolated from alcoholic extracts of garlic reversibly inhibited platelet aggregation through platelet deposition on severely damaged vessel wall but not affected platelet adhesion.
In fact, in the comparsion of the effect of the Garlic Pill with Plavix on Platelet Aggregation and Bleeding Time, groups treated with 1200 or 2400 mg garlic inhibited platelet aggregation substantially, through increased time of bleeding.

The use of garlic supplement should be taken with care for patients who are taking Anticoagulant as garlic may increase risk of bleeding. Also, patients with ulcer should consult with their doctors.

Ginger, the Kitchen Spice Which Suppresses the Onset and Progression of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Ginger may have a potential effect on the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, some scientists suggested.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of arthritis and chronic low-grade inflammatory disease associated with the immune system mistakenly attacks the joint tissue.

According to the statistic, in the US over 1.3 million Americans were affected by rheumatoid arthritis compared to 1% of the worldwide population.

As of today, researchers do not know what triggers the immune system makes antibodies that attack the joint tissue. Why people with the same health condition in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of the condition while others do not.

However, they do know the increase in age, family history, gender, environment, smoking, and obesity are some prevalent risk factors of RA.

In fact, lifestyle is some preventable risk factor which have been found to elevate the risk RA in the Western world.

Dr.Kathleen Chang, the lead scientist, in the study "Smoking and Rheumatoid Arthritis" clearly suggested that by following a healthy lifestyle, RA may be preventable.

The Doctor team continued " Recent developments have shed light on the pathophysiology of RA in smokers, including oxidative stress, inflammation, autoantibody formation, and epigenetic changes".

And "The association of smoking and the development of RA have been demonstrated through epidemiologic studies, as well as through in vivo and animal models of RA.

These results indicated a significant change in RA risk just by quitting cigarette smoking.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On seeking alternative therapy for patients with chronic, painful diseases, a research team at the Basic Clin Pharmacol Toxicol investigated the potential of hydroalcoholic extract of Zingiber officinale rhizomes (Z. officinale extract) in ameliorating inflammatory process in rat rheumatoid arthritis.

Application of Z. officinale extract at the doses higher than 50 mg/kg/day intraperitoneally showed a significant effect in boosting the immune activity in rats with rheumatoid arthritis.

Continued administration for 26 days Z. officinale extract can ameliorate the clinical scores, disease incidence, joint temperature and swelling, and cartilage destruction.

The results were attributed to the extract effect in inhibiting the production of proinflammatory cytokines which play a critical role in facilitating the onset of low-grade inflammation.

The extract also reduced the immune system in the production of an antibody against the joint tissue.

Moreover, Z. officinale extract at the dose of 200 mg/kg/day was superior compared to those of 2 mg/kg/day injection of indomethacin in most of the measured parameters.

Dr. Fouda AM, at the final report, said, "These observations might make Z. officinale extract a good alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for patients with rheumatoid arthritis".

In arthritis induced by a single intradermal injection of 0.1 mL of Complete Freund's adjuvant (containing heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis) into the palmar surface of the left hind paw conducted by the King Faisal University, Al-Hufof, researchers examine the anti-rheumatoid arthritis in rats randomly assigned to receive orally and daily (for 28 consecutive days) distilled water as vehicle, indomethacin (1.0 mg/kg body weight), or GTaq (200 or 400 mg/kg body weight, ginger-turmeric rhizomes mixture ) from the day of arthritis induction.

Application of GTaq (especially the high dose) was more effective (4.2-38.4% higher, P < 0.05-0.001) than those of indomethacin (a non-steroidal/anti-inflammatory drug) in alleviating the loss in body weight gain, the histopathological changes in ankle joints, blood leukocytosis and thrombocytosis, iron deficiency anemia, serum hypoalbuminemia and globulinemia.

Rats treated the Gtaq also showed a reduction of the impairment of kidney functions and the risks for cardiovascular disease.

Further analysis suggested that the protective effects of GTaq are attributed to increasing the food intake and decreasing the systemic inflammation and antioxidant activity in the inhibition of oxidative stress.

The finding supported the use of ginger-turmeric rhizomes mixture for the treatment against RA severity and complications.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of ginger anti-rheumatoid arthritis possibilities.

Bromelain Inhibits the Risk of Skin Cancer In Vitro

Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the skin tissues, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of skin cancer in the US are associated with prolong-period of sun exposure. In other words, UV rays that damage the skin have been the main culprit that causes the onset of skin cancer.

Believe it or not, according to the statistics, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

Every day, approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer due to a misunderstanding of the health benefits and risk of sun and tanning exposure.

Most common symptoms at the early stage, are a large brownish spot with darker speckles, a mole that changes in color, size or feel or that bleeds, a small lesion with an irregular border and portions that appear red, pink, white, blue or blue-black.

There are 3 major types of skin cancer, including* Basal cell cancer
It is the most common type of skin cancer associated with the abnormal growth of the cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis. Cancer rarely spread and kill but can cause significant destruction and disfigurement to the affected skin area, accounting for more than 90% of all skin cancer in the U.S.

* Squamous cell cancer
It arises from the uncontrolled multiplication of transformed malignant cells in the middle layer of the epidermis.

* Melanoma
Melanoma is less common compared to other skin cancer caused by the malignancy of melanocytes, the cell produced dark pigment for your skin.

Some researchers suggested that by seeking the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. covering yourself with proper sunglasses, clothing, and hat, using sun protective cream, particularly in avoidance of tanning and UV tanning beds, most types of skin cancer are preventable

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of skin cancer, researchers examined the bromelain (BL) effect in the form of nanoparticles (NPs) based delivery systems on skin cancer cells.

The formulated NPs with a mean particle size of 130.4 ± 8.81 nm exhibited sustained release of BL by observation of the analysis.

According to the tested assays, BL loaded poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) NPs enhanced anti-tumor effects compared to free BL.

In tumorigenesis mice model, NPs reduced the average number of tumors by 2.3 folds), delayed tumorigenesis by 2 weeks), and inhibited the percent tumorigenesis by 4 folds.

Furthermore, the administration of NPs also exerted a significant effect on reduced the percent mortality rate and the average tumor volume.

More precisely, NPs demonstrated anti-cancer cell efficacy was attributed to its capability in modulating the expression of pro-apoptotic (P53, Bax) and anti-apoptotic (Bcl2) proteins.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "developed NPs formulation could be used to improve the efficacy of chemotherapy by exerting chemo-preventive effects against induced carcinogenesis at lower dosages".

Additionally, in another mouse skin tumorigenesis model, bromelain not only exerted a similar effect of the aforementioned study it also reduced tumor volume up to a tune of approximately 65%.

In this case, bromelain induced cancer cells apoptosis by stimulating the expression of proteins associated with tumor-suppressive and pro-apoptotic genes, inhibiting the gene involved in anti-apoptosis.

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Butterbur, Exhibits Cytotoxic Effects Against Cancers Cells

Scientists may have found a medicinal remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable ways in our body, due to the change of cellular DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the organ. At the 0 stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients so not experience any symptoms.

However, at the later stage of the tumor progression, if undetected, the large size of the tumor can suppress and break the nearby small blood vessel, leading to internal bleeding and severe if the tumor also suppresses the nearby nerve cells.

Primary cancer cells at this advanced stage can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Symptoms of cancer at this stage are totally dependent on the affected area, including vomiting blood in oral and lung cancer blood in the urine in bladder cancer. hoarseness in throat cancer. ... Persistent lumps in the breast and lymph cancer and indigestion or difficulty swallowing in digestive related cancers.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of cancers, but they do know, according to epidemiological studies that age, alcohol cancer, chronic Inflammation, genetic proposition, unhealthy diet, change of hormones use of immunosuppression, infectious agents, obesity, exposure to radiation and sunlight, use of tobacco are most common risk factors associated with the onset of some specific cancers.

Some researchers in the investigation of weakened immune function in the risk of cancer suggested people with a weakened immune system lost the function
1) to stimulate the T cells inactivation of the B cells in the production of p53, a tumor suppressor gene, or antioncogene that inhibits the cancer cell proliferation and tumor development and

2) to stimulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off the DNA alternated damage cells in the acute phase of inflammation.

In other words, if you have a strong immune system, your risk of cancer is substantially lower compared to the general public.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere. the herbal plant has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts, and duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

The Shandong University at Weihai, on finding a natural compound for the treatment of cancer with no side effects examined a new bakkenolide isolated from Butterbur anti-cancer effects.

The new bakkenolide exerted a potent cytotoxic activity against a number of cultured human cancer cells, including human cervical carcinoma (HeLa), human breast cancer (MCF-7) and murine Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cell lines.

According to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service in vitro methanol extract from the leaves in the rat liver epithelial cells. significantly decreased spontaneous beta-galactosidase activity and beta-galactosidase activity induced by a mutagen.

Elevated beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) enzyme activity is an indication of the tumor and metastatic expression.

All doses of the extract (0.08-100 mg/plate) decreased the reversion frequency induced by benzo (alpha)pyrene (BaP) in S. Typhimurium TA 98 of the Salmonella typhimurium.

Additional analysis of the experiment, PJ extract showed greater cytotoxic effects on the human stomach, colon, and uterus cancer cells than on other cancer cell types and normal rat liver epithelial cells.

Furthermore, PJ significantly increased the numbers of gap junction proteins associated with tumor suppression in a dose-dependent manner.

Dr. the lead scientist said, "Based on these findings, PJ is suggested to contain antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic compounds".

Taken altogether, herbal Butterbur may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cancers.
