Herbal Bilberry Protects the Cells Integrity Against Cancer

Cancer is a group of cell mutated diseases caused by the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of an organ. At the early, most people with cancer are asymptomatic, however, at the later, due to the size and the tumor, patients may experience the general cancer symptoms such as unintended weight loss, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort and loss of appetite and localized symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding.

The exact causes of cancer are not identified. As of today, researchers do not know why one person develops cancer and another doesn’t, even they share some common risk factors of the disease.

However, most prevalent factors associated with the cancer onset include age, family history, long-term exposure to certain cancer induced chemicals, use of tobacco and excessive alcohol drinking,..... the list goes on and on, depending on the types of cancer.

Some researchers suggested that the most common risk factor that causes cancer in the Western world may be associated with widespread obesity.

Dr. Karen Basen-Engquist, in the evaluation of obesity risk of cancer, said, "In the United States, approximately 85,000 new cancer cases per year are related to obesity. Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%".

And, "High priorities for future research involve additional work on the underlying mechanisms, and trials to examine the effect of lifestyle behavior change and weight loss interventions on cancer and intermediate biomarkers".

The findings strongly indicated the risk of cancer is increased substantially in obese.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Searching the list of natural compounds with a strong potential for the treatment of cancer with no side effects, scientists investigated the secondary metabolites including flavonoids (1-8), caffeic (9) and chlorogenic (10) acids from the extract of Sakhalin bilberry Vaccinium smallii leaves in vitro.

All 10 metabolites included in the study displayed a significant effect in the inhibition of EGF-induced neoplastic transformation in the conversion of normal cells into tumor cells of mouse JB6 Cl 41 P+ cells.

Furthermore, none of the compound isolated from bilberry extract showed non-toxic against JB6 Cl 41 P+ cells up to a concentration of 200 µm.

The results suggested that bilberry secondary metabolites protect the normal against the alternation of cells DNA without causing harm to the nearby healthy normal cells.

In HL60 cells, injection of bilberry extract-induced apoptotic cell bodies and nucleosomal DNA fragmentation.

However, bilberry did not exert similar effects against the HCT116. The proportion of apoptotic cells induced in HCT116 was much lower than that in HL60 cells, without the presence of DNA fragmentation.

According to the extracted analysis, the efficacy of bilberry against cancer cell lines was attributed to the bioactive phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins in initiating the free radical scavenging property.

Dr. Katsube N, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "These results indicate that the bilberry extract and the anthocyanins, bearing delphinidin or malvidin as the aglycon, inhibit the growth of HL60 cells through the induction of apoptosis".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed significant bioactive secondary metabolites may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Artichoke May Process Anti Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) Potency, According Medical Literature

Artichoke may be the next target to extract the ingredient needed for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), according to studies.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a type of cancer characterized by the increased and unregulated growth of myeloid cells in the bone marrow and the accumulation of these cells in the blood.

The exact causes of CML are unknown. Some researchers suggested that the causes of DNA alternation of the myeloid cells may be associated with the abnormal function of genes involved in cell cycle division and tumor suppression.

Epidemiologically, most people with CML are associated with risk factors of aging, male gender, and long-term exposure to radiation. However, most people with some of the risk factors do not develop CML.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, about 8,430 new cases will be diagnosed with CML (4,980 in men and 3,450 in women). The disease also causes the death of 1,090 people, including 620 men and 470 women.

The most common symptoms of CML include easy bleeding and tired, unintended weight loss, pain or fullness below the ribs on the left side, pale skin.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of the disease.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and for the treatment of digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia evaluated the methanol extract of CCL flower and/or cynaropicrin showed remarkable anti-proliferative activity in vitro models of the leukocyte cancer cell.

In other words, the study was carried out to examined the effect of CCL extract on human K562 CML and K562 imatinib-resistant (IMAR) cell proliferation and on p210BCR/ABL expression.

Where p210BCR/ABL chimeric protein is considered to be implicated in the pathogenesis of Philadelphia chromosome-positive human leukemias.

Injection of CCL extract showed to inhibit the cell viability of both K562 CML human cell line and K562 IMAR, according to the MTT assay.

In protein implication, cynaropicrin and its deacyl derivative from the CCL extract displayed a significant capability in the inhibition of the p210BCR/ABL oncoprotein, according to the Western blot technique.

In cancer viability assay, CCL extracts exerted a similar effect compared to that of imatinib or its cancer growth arrest in CML.

In the depth differentiation, researchers also found that CCL extract also showed strong inhibition of the delay or overcome the resistance of CML to chemotherapy.

Taken altogether, artichoke with the abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry, the Natural Treatment for Varicose Veins with No Side Effects

Varicose veins are the medical condition in which the superficial veins have become enlarged and twisted.

The condition has been found to induce bleeding or superficial thrombophlebitis if left untreated.

The most common causes of varicose veins are found just under the skin in the legs, leading to the symptoms of fullness and pain in the affected location accompanied by symptoms of achy or heavy feeling in the legs. The pain is also worsened after a long time of sitting or standing for a long time and skin discoloration around the area.

Some patients with painful varicose veins also experience symptoms of burning, throbbing, muscle cramping, and swelling in the lower legs and itching.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of varicose veins, aging due to wear and tear on the valves in the veins that help regulate blood flow may be one of the most common risk factors.

Dr. Caggiati A in the study of age-related variations of varicose veins, wrote, "Varicose SVs were more frequent in the older group (62%) than in younger one (39%) owing to a higher prevalence of limbs with combined saphenous veins (SVs) and Stributaries of the SVs (STVs) varicosities (respectively, 59% and 37%)".

And, "varicose disease may progressively extend in an antegrade fashion, spreading from the STVs to the SVs".

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), researchers compared the efficacy of Pycnogenol, venoruton, troxerutin, the complex diosmin-hesperidin, Antistax, Mirtoselect (bilberry), escin, and the combination Venoruton-Pycnogenol (VE-PY) against the therapeutic compressions.

The study included 1,051 patients who completed the registry. During the experiment, there are no safety or tolerability problems observed.

Mirtoselect (bilberry) showed a significant effect on skin flux but in a lesser extent compared to those of Venoruton, Pycnogenol, and the combination VE-PY.

The edema score was decreased more effectively with the combination and with Pycnogenol compared to the other treatment group including the Mirtoselect (bilberry).

According to the improvement in symptoms score, Pycnogenol and compression showed a larger decrease in oxidative stress compared to the Pycnogenol, Venoruton, Mirtoselect (bilberry) and with the VE-PY combination.

However, the efficacy of Pycnogenol and the combination are competitive with stockings that do not have the same tolerability in warmer climates compared to other groups.

The findings suggested that the tested compounds processed anti chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and varicose veins properties.

Taken altogether, Mirtoselect (bilberry) may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of varicose veins with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha, the Potential Anti Neuro-Inflammatory Herbal Remedy

The central system is the complex of nerve tissues including the brain and spinal cord with functions to respond to the integrating sensory information.

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in which the macrophages of the first defense stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound in case of injury and production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fence off the foreign pathogens.

Inflammation also can be triggered by the immune mistakenly attacked the body tissues in cases of autoimmune disease.

Neuroinflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens that induced oxidative stress to the brain.

A nerve cell is a brain cell specialized in transmitting nerve impulses.

Neuroinflammation is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the central nervous tissues, including the brain and spinal cord.

There many risk factors associated with the onset of neuroinflammation similar to other tissues inflammation, including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.

In other words, neuroinflammation is a complex response to brain injury involving the activation of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.

Overnutrition in the Western world may be one of the main culprits associated with the widespread neuroinflammation in the aging population.

Neuroinflammatory disease can be acute or chronic. Chronic neuroinflammation that leads to the activation of glial cells and the recruitment of inflammatory cytokines into the brain is found to associate with neurodegenerative diseases.

Most cases of the neuroinflammatory disease associated with the loss of neuronal structure and function.can be measured by the typical inflammatory markers, including CSF Aβ1-42, tau and p-tau181, and a panel of 37 neuroinflammatory markers in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Aswagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-ageing herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the neuroprotective activity of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) against the inflammation associated with neurodegeneration and cognitive impairments induced by systemic LPS administration using in vivo rat model system.

The study included young adult Wistar strain male albino rats randomized into four groups: (i) Control, (ii) LPS alone, (iii) LPS + ASH-WEX, (iv) ASH-WEX alone.

According to the tested analysis, orally administered ASH-WEX not only significantly suppressed the cognitive and motor-coordination impairments in rats, but also regulated the expression of various proteins involved in synaptic plasticity and neuronal cell survival.

In LPS-mediated microglial activation induced damage to neurons via direct cell to cell contact or through secretion of inflammatory mediators, the application of ASH-WEX and FIV pretreatment restored neurite outgrowth and protect neurons from apoptotic cell death.

In other words, LPS-induced neuroinflammation activated in microglial conditioned medium-treated neuronal cultures and microglial-neuronal co-culture were significantly demolished by the application of ASH-WEX.

Collectively, researchers said, "ASH-WEX can be used as a promising natural therapeutic remedial for the prevention of neurodegeneration and cognitive impairments associated with peripheral inflammation and neuroinflammation".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of neuroinflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Enhances the Gut Microbiota for Healthy Aging

Aging is the natural and biological process of growing older.

You can not stop the aging clock, but, you can delay the progression by taking some preventive actions, including living a healthy lifestyle accompanied by moderate exercise.

Healthy aging refers to the creation of a series of conditions that allow the aging population to live functionally without affected by serious chronic diseases or medical conditions (that are well managed).

The World Health Organization in the definition of healthy aging wrote, "healthy aging as the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age” and "Functional ability is about having the capabilities that enable all people to be and do what they have reason to value".

In other words, healthy aging must comprise all the mental and physical capacities such as the ability to walk, think, see, hear and remember, particularly in bathing, dressing, and other independent living skills, such as shopping and housework.

Dr. Ruth Elaine Nieuwenhuis-Mark in the study of healthy aging as a disease wrote, "A popular theory in the aging literature since the early 1990s is the socioemotional selectivity theory (SST; Carstensen, 1992). SST was put forward as an attempt to explain the so-called “paradox of aging” which refers to the finding that while physical health tends to decline as we age subjective well-being may be maintained or even improve (Diener and Suh, 1998)".

And, "Focusing on normal aging as a disease could, therefore, be seen as a step-back for aging research rather than a move forward. Aging-as-disease proponents would argue however that their focus is on improving quality of life in our final years, not on increasing our lifespans per se".

Researchers in an aim to a natural compound which processes antiaging property examined the effects of bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption in healthy aging and intestinal barrier function and digestive enzyme activity, through regulating the gut microbiota in aging rats.

The study included aging rats fed with the medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract (20 mg per kg bw per day) in the regulation of the intestinal function.

Consumption of the extract showed strong activity in the gut by allowing the bacteria beneficial in the intestine (Aspergillus oryzae, Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, Clostridiaceae-1, the Bacteroidales-S24-7-group, and the Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group) to grow, and inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria (Verrucomicrobia and Euryarchaeota).

However, high-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption was found to induce the negative effect in alternating some intestinally beneficial bacteria.

Furthermore, bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption also decreased the activity of digestive enzymes in breaking down food correlated to the changes in bacterial composition, short-chain fatty acids, and the intestinal mucosal barrier.

In other words, bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption improved the digestive function without affecting the activity of the digestive enzyme which has been found in low levels in people with the digestive problem including the aging population.

Dr. Li J, the lead scientists said, " bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption is a potential approach for assisting healthy aging".

The finding suggested that bilberry anthocyanin extract has a significant anti-aging effect by optimizing the function of the digestive system through wide range mechanisms, including bacterial composition.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered an anti-aging remedy, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, the Potential Prevention and Treatment of Flu Influenza

Influenza A, B, C, and D are 4 types of flu influenza. Influenza virus A and B are seasonal flu occurred during the fall, winter, and early spring, which causes sniffling, aching, coughing, and running and stuffy nose and fever, affecting over 20% of the general population.

Influenza virus types C in the virus family Orthomyxoviridae tends to cause mild upper respiratory infections, similar to those of cold.

Influenza D viruses only affect cattle.

Individuals who have influenza are usually recovered within one week and symptoms are gone within 2 weeks.

However, people with the immature and weakened immune system including young children under age 5, adults older than age 65, elderly in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes are not only associated with the risk of influenza but also increase the risk of influenza deadly complications.

Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum due to change in the immune system are more prone to influenza and influenza complications.

Most common H and N subtype are influenza A that has been mutated to affect the combination of human, swine, and bird flu viruses, including
* H1N1 - Swine Flu
H1N1 normally is only transmitted among pigs. However, as of today, H1N1 became the first flu pandemic in the world that causes respiratory illness.

* H5N1 - Bird Flu
H5N1 is the strain of influenza known as a bird or avian flu. Before, it is transmitted between birds, but today, it now can be passed from bird to human. The strain is dangerous to humans with high death rates.

The most common symptoms of influenza are high fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, sneezing, and persistent fatigue.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of influenza, researchers compared the effect of two preparations of bromeline ("Sigma Co., Catalogues' Nos. B2252 and B5144).s

According to the tested assay, in the influenza A(H1N1) virus, B5144 did not have any impact on it under similar experimental conditions.

Furthermore, B5144 also showed an incomplete effect on the influenza A(H3N2) virus with particles (with intact external coatings).

However, enzyme B2252 was effective for all viruses selected for testing, with the highest effect was noted for influenza A(H1N1) and B viruses.

In other words, not all bromlines are the same, some are more effective in the inhibition of viral influenza than the others.

Taken altogether, preparations of bromeline generation from bromelain may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of influenza, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bilberry Protects the Retinal Ganglion Cell Integrity Against Vision Loss

Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) is a type of neuron in the innermost cellular layer of the retina of the eye. The neurons receive visual information and pass them to the brain.

Believe or not, the neurons also extract different aspects of the image before passing them to the brain.

According to the biological information from an animal model, retinal ganglion cells distributed evenly across the retina, with the density ranges from ∼3000 cells per mm2 to ∼600 cells per mm2 depending on the areas of distribution.

Certain neurodegenerative diseases have been found to induce the gradual loss of retinal ganglion cells. Alzheimer's' disease and disease associated with multiple system atrophy the loss of retinal ganglion cells showed a pattern resembling glaucoma.

However, in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Huntington’s disease, the loss of RGCs are found to resemble that of mitochondrial optic neuropathies.

Any structural damage of the retinal nerve fiber layer and optic nerve head, or functional damage can affect the RGC integrity.

Symptoms of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss is depended on the level of damage of the retinal nerve fiber layer and optic nerve head in the retina. Symptoms can be severe eye pain accompanied by nausea and vomiting, visual disturbance, blurred vision in patients with glaucoma.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the urgency on finding a plant-based compound for the treatment of retinal damage, researchers evaluated the protective effects of a Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) anthocyanoside (VMA) and/or its main anthocyanidin constituents (cyanidin, delphinidin, and malvidin) on retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) against damage.

In vitro, retinal ganglion cells damage induced by free radical activation by injection of 3-(4-morpholinyl) sydnonimine hydrochloride (SIN-1, a peroxynitrite donor) and in vivo, N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA)-induced retinal damage in mice, researchers showed that VMA and all three anthocyanidins significantly inhibited SIN-1-induced neurotoxicity and radical activation in RGC-5 associated with the initiation of damage of the retinal ganglion cells.

Lipid peroxidation in mouse forebrain homogenates involved the retinal damage was also reduced by all tested compounds in concentration and dose-dependent manner.
Furthermore, intravitreous injected VMA significantly inhibited the NMDA-induced morphological retinal damage and an increase in apoptosis of DNA fragments in the ganglion cell layer.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested that bioactive compounds isolated bilberry process neuroprotective effects through antioxidative properties in vitro and in vivo models of retinal diseases.

In order to obtain more information about bilberry protective property against the damage of retinal ganglion cells, scientists analyzed the bilberry extract anthocyanins on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival after optic nerve crush.

C57BL/6J mice selected for the study were administrated orally with anthocyanins in bilberry extract (100 mg/kg/day or 500 mg/kg/day).

According to the tested assays, all doses of anthocyanins in bilberry extract exhibited increased significantly levels of Grp78 and Grp94 associated with endoplasmic reticulum integrity and stress-induced autophagy in mice detected in the inner nuclear layer and ganglion cell layer of the retina, surrounding the RGCs.

Gene expression of Chop, Bax, and Atf4 increased associated with cellular stress, and the mediation of apoptosis in mice after optic nerve crush was also decreased significantly after oral bilberry extract administration.

In other words, retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival was increased substantially after injecting anthocyanins in bilberry extract.

Dr. Nakamura O, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "bilberry extract has a potential role in neuroprotective treatments for retinal injuries, such as those which occur in glaucoma".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the protection of retinal damage against retinal diseases, particularly in retinal degeneration, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
