Topical Turmeric, the Best for the Prevention and Treatment Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a condition of skin discolor disease caused by the destruction of pigment cells and melanocytes of the skin.

The condition, in most cases is localized. However, in some patients, the disease also can affect several different areas on the body.

Symptoms of vitiligo are associated with the loss of skin color, or white, and patches of skin.

The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, however, some researchers suggested that the disease may be caused by the immune overreaction that mistakenly attacks and destroys certain cells within the body.

Epidemiologically, people in the younger age group before the age of 40 are at most risk of vitiligo.

According to the statistics, over 50% of vitiligo is found in patients who are 20 and younger.

The condition has been found to induce emotional and psychological issues to patients, even the condition does not cause pain or health problems.

As of today, researchers do not know how to prevent disease onset. Most medications for the treatment of vitiligo including creams that control inflammation, combining psoralen and light therapy are focusing on reducing the severity of the condition and improve the quality of life.

If all noninvasive treatments fail, surgery may be necessary.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of vitiligo, researchers examined the curcumin effect on the pigment cells of the skin, melanocytes.

Injection of Cucumis melo extract showed to exhibit the production of antioxidants by the host in blocking the effect of free radicals in the induction of skin oxidative stress.

Topical preparation, containing Cucumis melo superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, demonstrated a potential effect in the treatment of vitiligo.

Natural UV or artificial narrowband UVB treatment or phototherapy displayed significant protection against pigment damage, similar to those of turmeric topical preparation.

Additionally, the topical gel according to the repigmentation rate recorded exerted a similar effect compared to the patients treated only with phototherapy with adverse effects.

Moreover, the topical formulation, containing phenylalanine, Cucumis melo extract, and acetylcysteine showed a more promising result combined with nb - UVB target phototherapy.

Based on the findings, turmeric used along with or combined with other conventional medicine may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of vitiligo pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Enhances the Ratio of Human Gut Microbiota

Gut microbiota is a community of microbes living in the gastrointestinal tract.
Believe it or not, there are over trillions of microorganisms, including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 million genes.

In a healthy individual, the ratio of good and bad microbes in the gut are balanced. However, people who are under constant stress or have a psychological condition such as anxiety, and depression, and long-term use of antibiotics may have a negative impact on the ratio.

In other words, emotional problems, use of antibiotics may alter the ratio of the microbes in the gut, leading to inflammation, oxidative stress, and blood sugar imbalances.

Dr. Ruth K. Dudek-Wicher, the lead scientists wrote, "Gut microbial imbalance (dysbiosis) has been linked to important human diseases and inflammation-related disorders".

And, "...the impact of different antibiotics causing such long-term consequences as decreased microbial diversity, modulation of the Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes ratio, Clostridium difficile overgrowth, and increased expansion of the opportunistic pathogens Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia spp., and Klebsiella spp.".

More precisely, imbalanced gut community microbes ratio can induce certain health problems including
* Decreasing the interaction with the immune function against inflammatory immune disorders.

* Increasing the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

* Reducing nutrient extraction from the diet, thus increasing the risk of obesity and obese complication.

* Failure to control brain insulin signaling and metabolite levels that can lead to bad neurobehaviors.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the improvement of bacterial composition in the gut, researchers
examined the effects of curcumin in the gut microbiota in dysbiosis, a condition that links to many metabolic diseases.

According to the tested assays, curcumin and its derivatives exerted direct regulative effects on the gut microbiota by increasing the ratio of bacteria composition in the flavor of good bacterias.

Furthermore, in the testing the turmeric tablets in the gut microbiota determined by 16S rDNA sequencing, researchers divided.14 healthy human subjects into 3 groups with extract of piperine (Bioperine) (n = 6), curcumin with Bioperine tablets (n = 5), or placebo tablets (n = 3).

According to the bacterial analysis, turmeric-treated subjects displayed a modest 7% increase in observed species compared to control with an overall reduction in species by 15%.

Moreover, curcumin displayed an average increase of 69% in detected species, depending on the gut microbiota response to individual subjects.

More precisely, in "responsive" subjects curcumin increased in most Clostridium spp., Bacteroides spp., Citrobacter spp., Cronobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., Enterococcus spp., Klebsiella spp., Parabacteroides spp., and Pseudomonas spp. and reduced relative abundance of several Blautia spp. and most Ruminococcus spp.

In other words, curcumin improved the ratio of gut microbiota by stimulating the production of "good bacterial and reducing the levels of "bad" bacterias in the colon.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "All participants' microbiota displayed significant variation over time and individualized response to treatment. Among the responsive participants, both turmeric and curcumin altered the gut microbiota in a highly similar manner".

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of imbalanced ratio of gut microbiome composition, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cinnamon: The Best Whole Food Medicine for Patients with Hyperlipidemia

Intake of cinnamon is found to improve levels of blood cholesterol in patients with Hyperlipidemia.

According to the Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital, cinnamaldehyde (CA), an active and major compound in cinnamon reduced levels of triglyceride, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and increased high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), in C57BLKS/J db/db mice.

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of a tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, used in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

Hyperlipidemia is abnormally elevated levels of any or all lipids or lipoproteins in the blood.

Also in C57BL/Ks db/db mice study, the cinnamon extract significantly improved hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia possibly by regulating the protein with function in medicated glucose and lipid metabolism.

Furthermore, in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD), oral administration of cinnamon polyphenol extract reduced the hyperlipidemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress through activating the proteins involved to transfer genetic information of DNA into RNA and antioxidative defense signaling pathway.

Dr. Ghorbani A, the lead author at a joint study said, " the levels of triglyceride and total cholesterol in polyherbal mixture treated rats were significantly lower than those in the diabetic control group (P < 0.05)" and "Our results demonstrated that this polyherbal mixture has beneficial effects on blood glucose and lipid profile and it has the potential to be used as a dietary supplement for the management of diabetes"

With all the information collected, cinnamon may have potency in reduced levels of triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and increased HDL cholesterol in patients with hyperlipidemia, but the use of high quantity should only be given by herbalist in the prevention of toxicity.

Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) and primary glioblastoma

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America, it's bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.
Bone Cancer
Bone cancer is an abnormal growth of cells within the bone that have become cancerous. Bone cancer may be classified as primary cancer originated in the bone, and secondary cancer originated from elsewhere.

The Ingredients

The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.

The health benefits Aloe emodin have been found to effective in induced cell anti-proliferation and apoptosis in some cancer cell line. In U87 human malignant glioma cells, the chemical constituent found in Cascara Sagrada,

arrested the cell cycle in the synthesis phase of the cell cycle and promoted the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in U87 cells, leading to early event of the mitochondria-induced apoptotic pathway. In other studies of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO; control) or aloe-emodin (40 microM) showed the effect of Aloe-emodin in inducing apoptosis in U-373MG glioma cells by suppressed PKC(a family of protein) activity and reduced the protein content of most of the PKC isozymes. These results support the positive effect of aloe-emodin and may be considered as a potential agent in treating human malignant glioma cells.

Green Tea, A Potential Healthy and Longevity Functional Food, Scientists Find

Regular and daily moderate green tea intake may have a potential effect on increasing the lifespan in humans, some scientists suggested.

Some researchers suggested that human longevity without a health issues can be achieved through a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Dr. Small GW, the lead author in the study "A short-term healthy lifestyle program combining mental and physical exercise, stress reduction, and healthy diet was associated with significant effects on cognitive function and brain metabolism. Reduced resting activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex may reflect the greater cognitive efficiency of a brain region involved in working memory".

Would these results be enough for a person to live longer and healthier?

Eating the right foods can lead to a longer, healthier life. Some researchers recommended the following diet for the elderly to liver longevity without some major health issues.
* A basic heart-healthy diet including fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products like yogurt and cheese, skinless poultry, lots of fish nuts and beans and non-tropical vegetable oils can help to control your weight because more than a third of people 65 and older are obese, the major cause of diabetes, some cancers, and heart disease.

* A basic brain-healthy diet including lean meats, deep-sea fish, skim milk products and some whole-grain cereals that reduces risk neurodegenerative disease can improve the memory.

* A basic protein diet to build the muscle diet including low-fat or fat-free yogurt, cheese, milk, lean meats, fish, other seafood, and beans.

* A basic diet including calcium and vitamin D in fortified foods, fish like salmon, and dairy products. to build the bone.

In the study to reaffirm the effect of green tea in increasing lifespan in various experimental animal models, researchers at the University of California Irvine launched an investigation to examine whether green tea acts to increase the lifespan of the fruit fly by modulating iron regulators, specifically, mitoferrin, a mitochondrial iron transporter, and transferrin, found in the hemolymph of flies

Application of green tea increased the lifespan of transferrin mutant lifespan but not the mitoferrin mutants and fertility, compared to the increased male fly lifespan and reduced male fertility in the non-mutant group.

These results suggested that green tea may act to increase the lifespan of Drosophila in part by the regulation of mitoferrin and reduction of mitochondrial iron.

Continued to the above investigation, researchers found that the lifespan extension properties of green tea were only observed in the presence of females which alludes to a reproductive (or mating) dependent mechanism.

Furthermore, the application of green tea exerted a strong and negatively impact on male fertility as shown by a reduced number of offspring produced and increased mating latency

These correlations suggested that green tea extends the lifespan of male flies by inhibiting reproductive potential, possibly by limiting iron uptake.

Researchers at the final report indicated green tea may have a profound effect in increasing lifespan but a negative effect on reproductive fitness in humans.
Moreover, in the study of a standardized epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) rich green tea extract (comprising > 90% EGCG) effects on fitness and lifespan as well as parameters of glucose metabolism and energy homeostasis in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, researchers found that
* The application of the green tea extract demonstrates a significant increase in the mean lifespan (+ 3.3 days) and the 50% survival (+ 4.3 days) as well as improved fitness
* These effects went along an increased expression of Spargel, the homolog of mammalian PGC1α whose dysfunction is associated with accelerated aging, decreased mobility and decreased lifespan.

* Treatment with the green tea extract decreased glucose concentrations.

Dr. Wagner AE, the lead scientist said, "a decrease in glucose metabolism in connection with an upregulated expression of Spargel contributes to the better fitness and the extended lifespan in EGCG-treated flies".

Taken all together, green tea may have a profound effect in increasing lifespan in human, depending on the confirmation of further data collection from the large example size and multi-center studies.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Bone Cells Integrity Against Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a medical condition characterized by the loss of bone density.

In other words, the bone disease is a result of overexpression of bone loss due to bone resorption compared to bone made by the body, leading to risk bone fracture and breaking.

In a severe case, bones of patients with osteoporosis may become so weak, they can break from a fall or even from sneezing or minor bumps.

Microscopy, healthy bone processed a high density (fewer spaces and small holes in the honeycomb) compared to low density ( large spaces and holes in a honeycomb) in the patients with osteoporosis.

In the US, due to the widespread osteoporosis in the elderly, the disease has become a concern of the scientist community. Believe it or not, according to the statistics, osteoporosis is responsible for two million broken bones and $19 billion in related costs every year.

As the condition continues to worsen, by 2025, osteoporosis will be responsible for approximately three million fractures and $25.3 billion in costs annually.

According to the statistics, in Canada, osteoporosis affects approximately 1.4 million Canadians, mainly in postmenopausal women and the elderly.

Additionally, 1 in 4 women and more than 1 in 8 men over the age of 50 years, with 1 in 4 men and women are having evidence of a vertebral fracture.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of osteoporosis, some researchers suggested that the disease may be correlated to the promotion of Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Seon-Joo Park, the lead scientist wrote, "(In the comparison of ) "Three major dietary patterns,... using factor analysis based on baseline intake data: traditional (high intake of rice, kimchi, and vegetables), dairy (high intake of milk, dairy products, and green tea), and western (high intake of sugar, fat, and bread).".

And, "..., western dietary pattern (p-trend = 0.043 in radius) demonstrated a higher risk of osteoporosis incidence than those in the lowest quintile".

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of osteoporosis, researchers evaluated the efficacy, in terms of changes in bone density, and safety of an oral formulation based on turmeric phytosome (Meriva®), in subjects suffering from low bone density.

The study included a total of 57 otherwise healthy subjects with low bone density who freely decided to follow either standard management (SM) to control low bone density (control group=28) or SM associated with a curcumin-based oral supplementation (supplement group=29).

Meriva®-supplemented group remarkably improved in the bone density of the heel measured by the Sahara densitometer accompanied by a significant decrease of ultrasounds transmission values at week 12 (-18.4%) and at week 24 (-21.0%), compared with baseline.

Furthermore, Meriva®-supplemented group also improved the bone densities of the small fingers and upper jaw with no adverse effects.

Based on the results researchers said, "This preliminary study suggests that a curcumin-based supplementation in combination with an appropriate lifestyle could be beneficial in the prevention and management of osteopenia".

In order to know more information about turmeric anti-osteoporosis activity, researchers examined the effects of curcumin on oxidative stress-induced osteoblast apoptosis.

The study included an osteoblastic cell line (Saos-2) exposed to various concentrations of H2O2 with or without curcumin treatment.

Injection of curcumin protected the viability of Saos-2 cells against the exposure to H2O2 and attenuated H2O2-induced apoptosis.

Furthermore, curcumin also improved the cellular function by preserving the mitochondrial redox potential, decreasing the mitochondrial oxidative status, through its antioxidants activity.

Moreover, curcumin treatment markedly increased levels of phosphorylated protein kinase B (Akt) and phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK3β) that have been found to induced bone loss in low levels.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of curcumin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada Chemotherapeutic and Mutated Gene Blocker Bioactive Components That Cut Off Energy Supply To Prostate Cancer Cells

Cascara sagrada may have a potential effect in inhibited onset and progression of prostate cancer, some scientists suggested.

Prostate cancer is medical a condition in which the cells of prostate has become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth which spread to the distant parts of the body.

Most prostate cancers are slow growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams. However, some protatecancers can grow and become invasive quickly.

According to the study of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, metastasis to the bone caused by tumor/microenvironment interactions remains the major cause of death in advanced prostate cancer(3).

In other words, this invasion may be a result of certain cancer cells that can reseed the primary site and gain more metastatic potential in the process.

The exact causes of prostate cancer is unknown, however, certain conditions may associate to increase risk of prostate cancer, including age, ethnic group, family history,... and obesity.

Some researcher suggested that diet high in calcium is linked to an increased risk of developing prostate cancer and maternal high fat diet (HFD) is associated in increased risk children prostate cancer(4).

Most patients may not experience any symptoms until advance stage.

Most common symptoms includes frequent urination, lost of bladder control such as weak or interrupted urine flow or the need to strain to empty the bladder, the urge to urinate frequently at night. In severe cases, patients may also find blood in the urine and lost of erection.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belongings to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America,

The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc..

The Ingredients

The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.

Aloe-emodin, a chemical constituent found in Cascara Sagrada is found to inhibit both proliferation and anchorage-independent growth of PC3 cells by targeting the protein complex that plays an impotant role in stimulated cancer cell metabolism (mTORC2) for survival and expansion.

Further analysis also found that application of aloe-emodin also suppressed the function of Protein kinase B, (Akt) of cancer cell in signalling protection of cell survival, increased cell cycle progression and cellular growth and protein kinase C alpha (PKCα) in promotion of cancer cell migration.

Dr. Liu K, the lead author at The World Class Institute and Chemical Biology Research Center at the end of the experiment wrote, " Aloe-emodin (also) exhibited tumor suppression effects in vivo in an athymic nude mouse model" and "Collectively, our data suggest that mTORC2 plays an important role in prostate cancer development and aloe-emodin suppresses prostate cancer progression by targeting mTORC"

Epidemiologically, emodin (ED), another bioactive compound found in cascara sagrada, also processed anti proliferation and induced apoptosis, suppressed angiogenesis, impeded metastasis, and enhanced chemotherapy.

In DU145 and A549 cells, the application of emodin suppressed the expression of both mutation gene CXCR4 and HER2 which are associated to prorate cancer risk without affecting cell viability in tumor cells and protects healthy cell integrity against mutated gene CXCL12 in the induction of cancer cells migration and invasion.

Additional differentiation suggested, the efficacy of emodin in inhibited mutated gene expression of prostate cancer was attributed to the bioactive activity in prevetion of cancer cell in promoted mRNA expression and suppressed of NF-κB in the activation of cancer cells proliferation.

These results indicated that emodin may have a potential used as a novel blocker of CXCR4 expression as well as a powerful therapeutic agent for metastatic cancer.

The findings showed that, herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) with bioactive components that have strong effects in inhibited prostate cancer cells may be considered as functional foods for treatment of prostate cancer.
