Gastric or stomach ulcer is a condition of localized tissue erosion in the lining the stomach.
The most common symptoms of gastric ulcers are abdominal pain, bloating, septic shock, dyspepsia, and blood in the stool due to bleeding, unintended weight loss, and loss of appetite and gastrointestinal discomforts.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of mood disorder, leading to reduced quality of life in many patients.
The imbalance between stomach acid and upper GI tract mucosa are the main cause of the condition onset associated with the use of certain medication, including aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic gastritis.
Epidemiologically, periodontal disease, aging, smoking, long-term use of mechanical ventilation and critical illness are at an increased risk of gastric ulcer.
According to studies gastric ulcer can be preventable, you can protect yourself against the risk gastric ulcer by
1. Adding dietary phytosterols and phospholipids
Experiments using animal peptic ulcer models showed that the lipid fraction in foods from the staple diets of low prevalence areas gave protection against both gastric and duodenal ulceration, including ulceration due to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and also promoted healing of ulceration.
2. Reducing intake of NSAID
NSAID has been proven to cause gastric Ulcer(9), by inhibiting the body’s production of prostaglandins, hormones that protect the stomach lining.
3. Quitting smoking
Cigarette smoking increases xanthine oxidase activity, leukotrienes, and nitric oxide production and also neutrophil infiltration in the gastric mucosa(13).
4. Not missing your dental appointment
The study showed that a significantly higher proportion of subjects with peptic ulcer reported that they lost five or more teeth (35.3 vs. 17.4%, p<0.001) or that they were told they had periodontitis (33.5 vs. 20.7%, p<0.001)(8).
5. Reducing stress
Stress had been found to increase the onset of gastric ulcer in people who suffered from the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami. The incidence of all types of peptic ulcers was 1.5-fold increased after the earthquake.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of gastric ulcer, researchers examined the intact (TrPP) and modified, and the low-molecular-weight (MTrPP) forms of pectic polysaccharides isolated from turmeric against a gastric ulcer in vitro and in vivo models.
Compared to TrPP, MTrPP possessed a significantly better ulcer-preventive property by inhibiting ulcer scores up to 85%.
More precisely, MTrPP exerted an effective muco-protection, inhibited the expression of H(+), K(+)-ATPase in the ulcer forming and of H. pylori growth/adherence, higher antioxidant/cytoprotective mechanisms associated to the gastric lesion.
By comparing the chemical contents in TrPP, and MTrPP, researchers suggested that the efficacy of MTrPP in the protection against the formation of the gastric ulcer may be attributed to the levels of galacturonic acid (687mg/g; TrPP-544mg/g) and galactose (52.9%; TrPP-21.7%) in the inhibition of inflammation.
In other words, the low molecular weight of MTrPP (155kDa; TrPP-13kDa) possesses higher antiulcer potential compared to that of TrPP.
In order to reveal more information about turmeric anti-gastric ulcer activity, researchers evaluated the effect of C. Angustifolia and M. arundinacea on forced swimming-induced hypothermia and gastric ulceration in rats.
According to the observation of 72 hours periodically and mortality recorded up to seven days, the application of both drugs did not produce any toxic symptoms or mortality even up to the maximum dose level of 4400 mg/kg.
Both the test drugs showed a significantly reversed the stress-induced gastric ulceration compared to stress-control rats.
Taken altogether, curcumin used in the intact (TrPP) and modified, and the low-molecular-weight (MTrPP) forms may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric, Promotes the Reproductive System Functioning in Vitro and Vivo
The reproductive system is a system of sex organs with a function to produce offspring.
In males, the reproductive system consists of the testes, where sperm is produced, and the penis.
In females, the structures of the reproductive system include the clitoris, labia minora, labia majora, and Bartholin's glands and internal structures include the vagina, uterus, and the ovaries.
The most common cause of reproductive organ disease is an infection. In females, reproductive tract infections can affect the upper reproductive tract (fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterus) and the lower reproductive tract (vagina, cervix, and vulva).
In males, most cases of infection are found on the penis, testicles, urethra, or the vas deferens.
Some cases of reproductive diseases such as cancer have been found to affect reproductive functioning, leading to infertility.
Fertility is a natural capability to produce offspring. Infertility is a condition in which the couple fails to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse or the female cannot carry the pregnancy to full term.
According to the statistics, over 5 millions couple alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world, because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seeks help from a professional specialist.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the improvement of reproductive functioning, researchers
examined the effects of Curcuma longa and curcumin (CUR) on reproductive systems, by searching the detailed literature survey concentrated on the protective effects of C. longa and curcumin on the activity of the reproductive organs.
According to the results of the searching from PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Iran- Medex, injection of C. longa and curcumin decreased the risk of cancer and other malignant diseases in the reproductive system by inhibiting the production of the proinflammatory cytokines and promoting the proteins associated with anti-apoptosis in the cells of the reproductive system.
Furthermore, C. longa and curcumin exerted a protective effect on the activity of the reproductive organs through their antioxidant effects in normal cells.
Moreover, C. longa and curcumin also exhibited different reproductive effects depending on the doses and the type of cells.
In order to discover more information about CUR reproductive activity, researchers examined the effect of on testis and testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) in rats with establishing chronic variable stress (CVS).
A total of 21 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats included in the study were divided into three groups: 1) control, 2) CVS and 3) CVS+ CUR (100 mg/kg/day dissolved in 0.5 mL of olive oil). All of the animals in control, CVS, and CVS+CUR groups were sacrificed after 15 days.
Injection CUR showed a significant effect in protecting the reproductive functioning by inhibiting the change of normal range testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) serum levels and seminiferous tubule apoptotic cells in the CVS group compared to the control.
Based on the results, Dr. the lead scientist said, "Our findings propose that curcumin might have curative potential on the reproductive system function and its impairment. It's regulated by stress and reproductive-related hormones".
Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound may be considered remedies for the treatment of reproductive dysfunction, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bilberry Protects the Stomach Against Gastric Ulcer, Studies Say
Gastric, stomach ulcer is an oval sore found on the lining of the stomach.
A gastric ulcer is one of the most common types of peptic ulcer disease which affects both the stomach and small intestines.
According to the epidemiological studies, gastric ulcer is caused either by the infection of bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) or long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin.
The most common symptoms are burning sensation or pain in the stomach. Most patients with gastric ulcers have pain that intensifies on empty stomach, depending on the severity of the condition.
Some patients with gastric ulcers also experience persistent dull pain in the stomach, unintended weight loss, nausea or vomiting, and bloating and acid reflux.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of a gastric ulcer.
Conventionally, most cases of gastric ulcer can be treated successfully depending on the cause, including medicine or surgery if the medicine failed.
Out of many risk factors that cause a gastric ulcer, some researchers suggested there is a correlation between obesity and gastritis as well as gastric ulcers.
Dr. Nadia B. Pietrzykowska said, "Excess body weight has been linked to various abdominal ailments. These may include abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea or constipation".
And, "Scientific studies are also increasingly reporting a correlation between obesity and gastritis as well as gastric ulcers. A recent, large study that specifically focused on analyzing gastric and duodenal ulcers confirmed that excess weight predisposed individuals to gastric ulcers when compared to their normal-weight counterparts".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
In the testing of the effect of Vaccinium myrtillus L. anthocyanoside (VMA) used as a folk medicine to treat diseases related to gastric ulcers in northern Europe, researchers investigated the protective effects of VMA on gastric mucosal damage in a murine gastric ulcer model.
During the experiment, oral administration of VMA (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg) significantly protected gastric mucosa against HCl/ethanol-induced gastric ulcers.
VMA protected the stomach by inhibiting lipid peroxide levels in a concentration-dependent manner and exhibiting the high scavenging activity against the superoxide anion radical (·O(2) (-) ) and the hydroxyl radical (·OH).
The antioxidant activity in VMA was found to be attributed to the presence of anthocyanidins and delphinidin.
Based on the findings, Dr. Ogawa K, the lead scientist said, "These findings indicate that the protective effects of VMA on HCl/ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury may be partially due to the antiperoxidative effects of anthocyanidins".
In order to provide more information about VMA gastric protective effects, researchers examined the antiulcer effects of 3,5,7-trihydroxy-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1-benzopyrylium chloride (IdB 1027,
an anthocyanidin from Vaccinium myrtillus) in various experimental models.
Orally, IdB 1027 inhibited all parameters associated with the onset of gastric ulcerations including anti-inflammatory drugs, ethanol, reserpine, histamine and duodenal ulceration induced by mercaptamine.
Furthermore, IdB 1027 also protected the stomach against chronic gastric ulcers induced by acetic acid.
Moreover, IdB 1027 in rat model did not affect gastric secretion in pylorus-ligated rats and increased gastric mucus in normal animals both in the absence and in the presence of indomethacin treatment.
In other words, IdB 1027 possessed a promising antiulcer activity, probably by potentiating the defensive barriers of the gastrointestinal mucosa.
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, the Natural Prevention and Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a digestive condition characterized by an inflammation of the large intestine. The disease affects over 1.6 million Americans today.
Most common types of IBD are
*Crohn’s disease (CD) is an inflammation of any part of the digestive tract. Most cases of CD affect the tail end of the small intestine.
* Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine.
The exact causes of inflammatory bowel disease are unknown. However, some researchers do know that
* The disease may be caused by the weakened immune system that fails to kill off the invasion of infectious micro-organisms in the acute phase of digestive infection caused by tissue injury and damage.
* IBD may be a result of the immune dysfunction mistakenly attacking the digestive tract, a case of autoimmune disease.
* Imbalance of ratio of good and bad bacteria in the colon, caused by long-term intake of certain medicines.
* IBD is also associated with age, family history, ethnicity, parasite, and smoking.
* Genetic mutation of NOD2, ATG16L1and IL23R involved in innate immunity, in the autophagy, and in the inflammatory response may also elevate the risk of IBD.
Believe it or not, if you are living in the Western world, you are also at a higher risk of the disease. For example, people who live in Western countries such as the United States and Europe have a higher IBD risk than those in other parts of the world.
Some researchers suggested an individual diet pattern may influence the risk of IBD.
Dr. Donjete Statovci, the lead scientists wrote, "Westernized diet, defined as high dietary intake of saturated fats and sucrose and low intake of fiber, represent a growing health risk contributing to the increased occurrence of metabolic diseases, e.g., diabetes and obesity in countries adopting a westernized lifestyle. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and asthma are chronic mucosal inflammatory conditions of unknown etiology with increasing prevalence worldwide".
And, "Recent reports indicate that the gut microbiota and modifications thereof, due to the consumption of a diet high in saturated fats and low in fibers, can trigger factors regulating the development and/or progression of both conditions".
In other words, by pursuing a healthy diet with a higher in fruits and vegetables and reducing intake of red meat, saturate and trans fat and processed foods, IBD is preventable.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
In an aim to find the potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, researchers examined the efficacy of bromelain in colitis in an animal study.
According to the tested assays, daily treatment with oral bromelain at the age for 5 weeks showed a significant effect on decreasing the incidence and severity of spontaneous colitis in C57BL/6 IL-10-/- mice.
Furthermore, bromelain also significantly decreased the severity of colonic inflammation by inhibiting the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine in mice colitis induced by piroxicam exposure.
Moreover, bromelain anti-inflammatory effects were associated with the exertion of proteolytical activity.
In wild-type mice treated orally with up to 1000 mg bromelain/kg/day for 18 weeks, researchers do not observe ant adverse effects such as dermatitis, hair loss, and weight loss due to mucositis.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " the results justify additional studies of this complementary biologically based approach to the treatment of IBD".
Also in the animal model, short-term oral treatment with bromelain was found to decrease the severity of colonic inflammation in C57BL/6 Il10(-/-) mice with chronic colitis.
Mice treated with fresh pineapple juice at a level equivalent to 14 mg bromelain purified from the stem decreased histologic colon inflammation scores and a lower incidence of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia (35% versus 66%; P < 0.02), with fewer neoplastic lesions/colon.
According to the flow cytometric analysis, murine splenocytes exposed to fresh pineapple juice in vitro effect leukocyte trafficking and activation in facilitating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with immune response.
Dr. Hale LP, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote, " long-term dietary supplementation with fresh or unpasteurized frozen pineapple juice with proteolytically active bromelain enzymes is safe and decreases inflammation severity and the incidence and multiplicity of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia in this commonly used murine model of inflammatory bowel disease".
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Endocrine Function Naturally
Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient that protects the endocrine system integrity with no side effects, according to studies.
The endocrine system is made up of glands that produce and secrete hormones with an aim to regulate the activity of cells or organs.
In other words, the endocrine system produces hormones to regulate the body's growth, metabolism (the physical and chemical processes of the body), and sexual development and function.
Any disruption of the endocrine system can cause abnormal production of the hormones, leading to developmental malformations in the infant and children, interference with the function of the reproductive organ, increased cancer risk; and disturbances in the immune and nervous system function.
The most common cause of endocrine dysfunction is exposure to men-make xenochemiclas. Particularly to those new and without testing men make chemicals introduced to the market every year.
There are many ways that endocrine disruptors can interfere with the endocrine system in hormone production such as mimic or partly mimic naturally occurring hormones in the body like estrogens such as xanophytochemicals that bind to a receptor within a cell and block the endogenous hormone from binding.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient that promotes the endocrine function, researchers examined the effects of ginger and turmeric on the modulation of hormone production of the body glands.
According to the differentiation of physiological and therapeutic effects of ginger and turmeric, both exerted a significant activity in some endocrine gland functions, and signal pathways by
* Inhibiting the high levels of some hormones such as T4, leptin or interacting with hormone receptors. In other words, ginger and turmeric normalize the levels of the hormone for the body needs.
* Inhibiting the production of cytokines/adipokine expression associated with inflammation and oxidative stress.
* Inhibiting the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating enzymes against the oxidative stress-induced hormone imbalance.
* Protecting the cell integrity against DNA alternation by promoting pro-apoptotic and inhibiting proliferative genes.
The results strongly suggested that ginger and curcumin exerted strong protection of endocrine functioning by modulating the hormones produced by the glands.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "These multiple mechanisms of protection against inflammation and oxidative damage make ginger and curcumin particularly promising natural agents in fighting the ravages of aging and degenerative diseases".
Taken altogether, turmeric combined with ginger may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of endocrine dysfunction, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry Protects the Blood Vessels Against the Risk of Vascular Disease in Vivo
Vasoprotection is the action in which substances including herbal and natural remedy are used to protect the integrity of the blood vessels.
Blood vessels are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart.
There are 3 main types of blood vessel
* Arteries that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues and organs of the body. Damage of arteries is found to induce coronary artery disease caused by narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries due to plaques accumulated on the arterial wall.
* Veins that carry blood toward the heart. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common condition associated with disease of the veins that affects up to 20 percent of adults.
* Capillaries (the smallest blood vessels) has been found to induce systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare acquired disorder.
Some researchers suggested that following a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise may have a strong impact on the blood vessels' integrity.
Dr. Hanrui Zhang said, "Accumulating evidence suggests that inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα) plays a pivotal role in the dysregulation of macrovascular and microvascular function".
And, "Dietary supplements and exercise training decrease TNFαproduction and ameliorate TNFα-mediated pathological changes in vasculature. Thus, the inhibitory effects of dietary supplements and physical exercise on TNFα production and TNFα signaling may contribute to their vasoprotective properties".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
On finding a natural ingredient which processes vasoactive and vasoprotective properties, researchers examined the effects of anthocyanin-rich extracts prepared from chokeberry (Ck), bilberry (B), or elderberry (E). on reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a critical role in the impairment of nitric oxide-mediated vascular functions.
In Coronary arterial rings isolated from 64 pigs and incubated in sterile tissue culture media overnight, Ck and B, but not E, produced dose- and endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation.
In coronary vascular tone, endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation by other factors was not affected by exposure of rings to any extract at 0.05 mg total anthocyanins per liter for 5 or 30 min.
Furthermore, anthocyanin-enhanced extracts produce endothelium-dependent relaxation in porcine coronary arteries.
However, high doses of B exerted a significantly protective effect against alternation of coronary arteries induced by ROS with no effect on vasorelaxation to endogenous or exogenous NO.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "These results suggest that such extracts could have significant beneficial effects in vascular disease".
Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of vascular disease, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, the Natural Anti Blood Coagulation Remedy
Coagulation is the process to form a blood clot. Coagulation is also used by the immune system to cover the wound or cut to prevent additional blood loss and protect the body against the invasion of foreign microorganisms.
More precisely, in the acute phase of infection, the immune system activated the fibrins together with small blood cell fragments called platelets, to form the clot. The clots are removed after healing.
However, excessive blood clotting associated with certain diseases and conditions, genetic mutations, and medicines, particularly in the aging population has been found to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Excessive blood clotting can be classified into acquired and genetic excessive blood clotting
* Risk factors associated with acquired excessive blood clotting are smoking, overweight, and obesity, pregnancy, use of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy,...
* The genetic preposition of clotting occurs in the mutation of proteins associated with blood clotting including mutated proteins that cause delay or dissolve blood clots such as Factor V Leiden and
Prothrombin gene mutation.
The most common diseases associated with excessive blood clotting include venous thromboembolism or DVT that involve in the deep veins in the legs and arterial thrombosis that involves in the arteries of the heart.
Conventionally, most cases of excessive blood clotting are treated by anticoagulants. In life-threatening blood clots, thrombolytics can dissolve clots that are already formed.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of blood coagulation, researchers examined the bromelain coagulation-inhibiting effects.
In an animal model, bromelain enhanced the activity of serum fibrinolysis by inhibiting the fibrinogen synthesis involving in hepatocytes in the final stages of the blood coagulation process.
Additionally, the anti-blood coagulative activity also exhibits the direct degradation of fibrin and fibrinogen associated with the clotting of blood.
Furthermore, bromelain lowers kininogen and bradykinin serum that involve in the contact activation of the blood coagulation process.
Additionally, bromelain also influenced on prostaglandin synthesis that serves the physiological function of preventing needless clot formation.
Moreover, these effects of bromelain are also dose-dependent.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of blood coagulation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
