Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Herbal Remedy Which Kills Bladder Cancer Cells in Vitro, Scientists Say

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may have a potential in the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, some scientists suggested.

Bladder cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly in the tissue of the bladder.

Most bladder cancer starts first on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the bladder. As the cancer progress to the advanced stage, the malignant cells can infect other healthy tissue through the circulation of blood and fluid.

Bladder cancer that spreads to other parts of the body is known as metastatic bladder cancer.

According to the statistic, every year, approximately, over 80,000 adults, including 62,380 men and 18,810 women in the United States are diagnosed with bladder cancer, causing the deaths of 12,520 men and 4,720 women.

The 5-year relative survival rate of all stages of bladder cancer is about 77%. However, the 5-year relative survival rate for people diagnosed with stage 0 of bladder cancer is about 98%,

The statistic strongly suggested, if bladder cancer is diagnosed in the early stage, it is treatable.

The exact causes of bladder cancer are unknown. However, the age of 50 and over, men, smoking, long-term exposure to harmful chemicals are associated with the increased risk of the disease,

Some researchers suggested certain medical conditions such as diabetes, previous treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and early menopause are also some of the prevalent risk factors that may increase the early onset of bladder cancer.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.

The Ingredients
It contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

In the reaffirm of traditional medicine use of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi for treatment of various types of cancer, researchers at the Chung-Ang University College of Medicine launched an investigation to examine the effects of Arbutin, a glycosylated hydroquinone extracted from the bearberry plant (Arctostaphylos species) on TCCSUP human bladder carcinoma cell.

At the dose at concentrations of < 500 microg/ml, Arbutin did not exhibit any cytotoxic effects in TCCSUP cells.

In different concentrations that are higher than 500microg/ml, Arbutin significantly decreased TCCSUP cell proliferation in a time-dependent manner.

According to the cell cycle analysis, arbutin strongly disrupted the cell cycle also in a time-dependent manner.

Furthermore, arbutin led to the inactivation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which is known to critically regulate cell proliferation.

The in-depth analysis also found that arbutin markedly increases the expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1)which is considered a key mediator of p53-dependent cell cycle arrest.

Where p53, also known as TP53, is a protein that processes a function in regulating the cell cycle division and hence functions as a tumor suppression.

Dr. Li H, the lead author, after taking into account of co and confounders, said, " arbutin inhibits TCCSUP cell proliferation via ERK inactivation and p21 up-regulation".

Abnormal activation of ERK was found to in human cancer due to DNA mutation. The combination of ERK pathway inhibitors (cytostatic agents) and conventional anticancer drugs (cytotoxic agents) are an excellent basis for scientists to develop new chemotherapeutic strategies against cancer.

Taken altogether, herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi containing a high volume of Arbutin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of bladder cancer,

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi anti-bladder cancer possibilities.

Artichoke Normalizes the Blood Cholesterol with No Side Effects in Human Studies

Cholesterol produced by the liver is needed for the cell to build strong membrane, to produce steroid hormone, bile acids, and vitamin D and aid the digestive functioning.

Most people with high blood cholesterol at the early do not experience any symptoms, however, as the levels of blood cholesterol continue to grow, at some points, patients may experience heart-related symptoms, including chest pain or angina, pain while walking caused by reduced blood flow to the legs.

In serious cases, elevated blood cholesterol can also induce symptoms of stroke and heart attack.

Epidemiological studies suggested that a high level of blood cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Besides a high-fat diet, certain risk factors such as the family history of high cholesterol, being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol intake, smoking and some health conditions including diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease have been found to increase the risk of high blood cholesterol.

There are 2 types of blood cholesterol
* Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) also is known as “bad cholesterol”. Bad cholesterol is a major cause of plaque build-up in the arteries if it presents at a high level.

*High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as “good cholesterol”. HDL helps remove LDL cholesterol from your arteries back to the liver.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 LDL)/ 1HLD

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Searching the list of combined nutraceuticals for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the effects of a combination of nutraceuticals based on artichoke, red yeast rice, banana, and coenzyme Q10.

The double bind, cross-over designed trial versus placebo included 30 adults with LDL cholesterol suboptimal in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

After a period of 3 weeks of dietary habits correction, patients began a period of 6 weeks of treatment with nutraceutical or placebo, followed by 2 weeks of washout and finally 6 weeks in cross-over.

The combination showed a significant improvement in total cholesterol (-13.6 %), LDL-C (-18.2 %), non-HDL-C (-15 %).

Dr. Cicero AF said, "The tested combination of nutraceuticals has shown clinical efficacy in the reduction of total cholesterol, non-HDL, LDL and triglycerides while improving the level of liver transaminases and high sensitivity C-reactive protein".

In order to reveal more information about artichoke anti-high blood cholesterol activity, researchers review selected studies according to the standard guideline and criteria by searching the databases of medical literature.

The review of the meta-analysis of data from 9 trials including 702 subjects suggested that artichoke has a strong effect in decreasing plasma concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides.

The application of artichoke has no effect on high-density lipoprotein concentration.

In other words, artichoke extract only had a significant reduction in both total and LDL-C, and triglycerides.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional and herbal remedy for the treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample-sized and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibits the Onset of Progression of HIV Infection

Human immunodeficiency virus -1 (HIV-1) is one of 2 types of HIV precipitated of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), transmitted through direct contact with HIV-infected body fluids, including blood, semen, and genital secretions,...

Human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 is the most widespread type worldwide that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition caused by the infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to the statistic, AIDS is the fifth leading cause of death in the US.

People between ages 25 and 44 in the United States are at substantially higher risk compared to other age groups.

Approximately 36.7 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS in 2016, including, 2.1 million children less than 15 years of age.

According to epidemiological studies, people who serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

Most people infected by the HIV virus may experience symptoms of fever, muscle aches, and joint pain similar to those of influenza in the early stage of the viral attacks.

According to epidemiological studies, people who have serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

If untreated, the virus will slowly multiply and destroy the cells of the immune system, leading to chronic signs and symptoms of fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes,...

If an infected individual has the numbers of T-cell count below 200, the person is considered to have AIDs.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and he Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of infectious diseases, researchers examined the clinical efficacy and safety of a new polyherbal preparation, Immu-25, in HIV-infected patients.

The open-label pilot study. included 36 patients (10 female, 26 male) with a mean age of 35 +/-10 years, with confirmed HIV infection with a CD4 count <500 cells/microL, received two capsules of the test drug twice daily for 18 months.

According to the results of the study, the polyherbal preparation produced good symptomatic improvement within 6 months with an increase in mean (95% CI) weight from 58 (53-64)kg to 63 (56-69)kg, 64 (58-72)kg and 68 (62-74)kg after 6, 12 and 18 months of treatment, respectively.

The application decreased the incidence and severity of symptoms such as diarrhea, fatigue, anorexia, cough, and fever in the participants.

Furthermore, there was a decrease in the mean (95% CI) viral load from 326 438 (428 600-186 420) copies/mL to 180 495 (258 300-124 000) copies/mL and 22 069 (42 100-16 000) copies/mL after 6 and 12 months of treatment, respectively.

Most importantly, the decrease in viral load was associated with an increase in mean (95% CI) CD4 count from a baseline of 243 (203-388) cells/microL to 336 (263-486) cells/microL after 6 months of therapy, and this continued to rise to 527 (285-767) cells/microL (p < 0.001) and 618 (362-1012) cells/microL (p < 0.001) after 12 and 18 months of treatment, respectively.

However, mild gastrointestinal adverse effects had been reported by some of the participants.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "herbal drug may have a good immunomodulatory effect and has potential as a co-therapeutic agent in the management of HIV infection. Further studies are warranted to confirm its therapeutic potential".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of HIV infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bearberry Leaf Normalizes High Blood Pressure in Vivo, Scientists Find

Herbal Barberry may be considered as a functional food and natural alternative in the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure quickly with no adverse effects, some scientists suggested.
High blood pressure or hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

The normal range of blood pressure is 120 over 80. The number in the top is systolic blood pressure, and the bottom is called the diastolic blood pressure.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of hypertension. However, researchers do know that certain preventable risk factors such as smoking, overweight or obese, physical inactivity,.... and excessive alcohol drinking are associated to increase risk of hypertension.

Prolong period of raising the pressure of the hear can lead to damage to the body in many ways.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke heart disease by damaging and weakening your brain's blood vessels, a blood clot in the arteries.

An unhealthy diet high in salt, sugar, process products, genetic mutation, aging, family history,... and long-term stress also have a substantial impact on the onset of hypertension.

Dr. Kim EJ, the lead author in the study of the dietary effect in patients with borderline hypertension, suggested, " a short-term (12 weeks) lifestyle intervention had positive effects on blood pressure control and weight reduction in the subjects, but not on their blood levels of adipokines. It is interesting that the blood level of baseline leptin was negatively associated with the changes in blood pressure after this short-term intervention"(3).

The results showed that long-term dietary intervention should have a strong impact on keeping blood pressure in check.

Adipocytes found in the obese population may contribute to the high prevalence of hypertension.

Leptin, a chemical compound in the blood plays a critical role in regulation and arterial hypertension
Conventional blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they can induce serious side effects, including common gastrointestinal discomfort and psychological symptoms,

Lifelong intake of hypertension medicine can cause erectile dysfunction.

If you take the medicine in a long-term, please make sure you discuss the side effects with your doctor.

Bearberries are 3 species in the genus Arctostaphylos, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herbs have been used in traditional medicine as diuretic agents and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stone,.... and pelvic pain.

The Chemicals Ingredients
It contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides,..... and flavonoids.

With the aim to find the possible hypotensive activity of aqueous extract of Vaccinium Arctostaphylos leaves, the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences conducted an experiment of rats with two-kidney, one-clip hypertension.

All Rat were subjected to a sham operation of the placement of Plexiglass clip on left renal arteries.

After four weeks of surgery, renal artery clipped rats were either injected intravenously with different doses of the extract at 10, 25, or 75 mg/kg or normal saline.

The mean blood pressure and heart rate were measured before and 20, 40 and 60 minutes after vehicle or drug administration, researchers found that

* Group given normal saline has a significantly higher mean blood pressure, heart, and right kidney weights, lower left kidney weight and significantly indifferent heart rate.

* Treatment group with the injection of the extract at 75 mg/kg exerts a reduction of the mean blood pressure at 20, 40 and 60 minutes after administration without changing the heart rate.

* However, groups treated with doses of but 10 or 25 mg/kg show an insignificant change of mean blood pressure compared to group administrated with the extract at 75 mg/kg.

These results suggested that bearberry leaf extract has a potential in reduced blood pressure in a dose-depended manner.

Dr. Khalili A, the lead author at the final report, wrote, "... at a higher dose the extract did have hypotensive activity without changing the heart rate".

Truly, the Laboratoire de Pharmacognosie study of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi and hydroalcoholic extracts suggested that the test substances may process a pharmacological effect in reduced blood pressure through increasing urine flow and urinary sodium excretion in vitro.

Taking all together, herbal bearberry and its extract may be considered as functional food for treatment of high blood pressure.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the herbal leaf extract during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of bearberry hypotensive possibilities.

Herbal Bilberry, the Natural Remedy that Prevents and Slows Progression of Parkinson's disease (PD)

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and medical condition that affects the nerve cells associated with the production of dopamine in the brain, leading to muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait.

In other words, Parkinson's disease is a progressive central nervous system disorder that affects neurons in transmitting messages in controlling the movement.

Some patients in the very early stage of PD may not experience any symptoms. However, Parkinson's disease symptoms gradually worsen as the condition progresses.
Researchers do not know why the neurons in the brain in some people are susceptible to gradually break down or die while others do not even they have similar health conditions and from the same family.

However, they do know, according to the epidemiological study, aging, gender, long-term exposure to certain toxic chemicals and genetic deposition are some of the risk factors found in patients with PD.

Please note that most people process some of the conditions that have never developed Parkinson's disease.

Some researchers in the examination of the dietary habits in different parts of the world suggested that people who drink caffeine found in coffee, tea, and cola are less likely to get Parkinson's disease compared to those who don't.

Dr. Prediger RD at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina wrote, "Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder affecting approximately 1% of the population older than 60 years".

And, "The available data also suggest that caffeine can improve the motor deficits of PD and that adenosine A2A receptor antagonists such as istradefylline reduces OFF time and dyskinesia associated with standard 'dopamine replacement' treatments".

The results strongly suggested if you drink caffeinated beverages, your risk of PD is decreased substantially.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient which processes neuroprotective effects against Parkinson's disease, researchers examined the Anthocyanin-rich preparations of Vaccinium species, including bilberry against the oxidative damage in dopaminergic neurons.

V. myrtillus preparation: 50% inhibition with 7 microM of total anthocyanins showed a significant neuron protection activity by inhibiting oxidation caused by the chain reaction of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

The application was found to be 1.5-4 times higher than that for the other preparations or for the purified anthocyanin.

According to the analysis of the chemical constituents, the neuroprotective effects were attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds anthocyanins and total cyanidins found abundantly in bilberry, but not quercetin or myricetin.

The results suggested that the high potency of anthocyanins processes a potentially neurotoxic reaction against the onset of Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Yao Y, the lead scientist wrote, "(the findings) provide a basis for in vivo testing of these flavonoids and their physiological metabolites in the context of neuro- and mitochondrial-protective effects".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha in Post Stroke Management

Stroke is a condition in which the brain function is interrupted rapidly due to the loss of blood supply as a result of the blockage of blood such as thrombosis and arterial embolism, or leakage of blood causes of the death of brain cells, according to the article of Mitochondria, oxidative metabolism and cell death in stroke by Sims NR, Muyderman H (September 2009).

In other words, stroke can be caused by either ischemia, due to lack of blood flow or hemorrhagic, due to bleeding.

A stroke is a medical emergency. Early intervention is most cases can minimize brain damage and potential complications.

There is a general belief that stroke is an accumulation over a long period of the unhealthy diet with red meat and processed meats in the induction of artery-clogging.

Some researchers suggested that increased intake of fruits and vegetables such as carrot accompanied with good fats such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel may have a substantial effect in reduced inflammation in the arteries, improved blood flow, and decreased the chance of blood clots.

Sadly, stroke is one of the most common causes of death worldwide.

In the US, according to statistics, approximately 800,000 people suffer a stroke in which 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65.

Stroke is also the third leading cause of death. Approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of disease associated with plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (WS), supplementation on middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) induced mitochondrial dysfunctions in an experimental model of ischemic stroke.

According to the tested analysis, before treatment with WS, tested mice showed an ischemia-reperfusion injury, leading to the increase of the oxidative stress indicated by increased reactive oxygen species and protein carbonyl levels and low levels of antioxidant enzymes.

The untreated mice also exerted decreased antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase activity, along with a reduction in GSH levels and the redox ratio, impaired mitochondrial functions, and enhanced expression of apoptosis markers.

Ischemia-reperfusion injury in the tested mice also induced mitochondrial dysfunctions.

Moreover, the levels of pro-inflammatory and apoptotic proteins were also increased in the untreated mice. The Y maze test also indicated a significant impairment in cognitive functions in the tested animal.

However, WS pre-supplementation ameliorated all parameters associated with the induction of MCAO such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunctions, apoptosis, and cognitive impairments.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "WS pre-supplementation in ischemic stroke and are suggestive of its potential application in stroke management".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a supplement for stroke management, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Stomach Against Gastritis Developing

Gastritis is a group of conditions associated with the inflammation of the lining of the stomach caused by infection of the bacterium, leading stomach ulcers developing.

A stomach ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the stomach. In most cases, it is a result of bacterial infection that leads to the erosion of the gastric lining by stomach acid.

Other causes of gastritis are long term excessive alcohol consumption and use of certain medication such as aspirin.

There are 2 types of gastritis
* Acute gastritis occurs suddenly as a result of inflammation or swelling in the lining of the stomach. and only affects the stomach and induce nausea or vomiting,

* Chronic gastritis is a condition that develops slowly due to chronic inflammation or damage of stomach lining that has not healed.

Patients with chronic gastritis if untreated were found to have a substantial risk of stomach cancer.
The most common symptoms of gastritis are burning sensation or pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting, and abnormal feeling of fullness in the upper abdomen after eating.

Out of many risk factors involved in the onset of the condition, some researchers in the observation of the correlation of high-fat diet-induced obesity over the past few decades, in the risk of gastritis wrote, "Obesity has become a major concern among gastroenterologists due to its large influence on gastrointestinal and hepatic diseases: reflux esophagitis, pancreatitis, gallstone disease, liver fibrosis, and neoplastic tumors of the esophagus, pancreas, and colon".

And, "the effects of obesity on endoscopic gastritis in subjects undergoing health check-up examination, and demonstrated that adiponectin, a bioactive molecule released from visceral fat, could be a protective factor of endoscopic gastritis".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of gastric inflammation, researchers examined the effect of diterpenoid C extracted from radix curcumae on Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-infected inflammation, intestinal metaplasia.

The study included human gastric epithelial gastric epithelium cell line (GES-1) infected by I-type H. pylori treated with radix curcumae (RC)-derived diterpenoid C of different concentrations (5, 10, 20 ÎĽg/mL) and amoxicillin.

According to the MTT assay, IC5 of RC-derived diterpenoid C and amoxicillin of 5 ÎĽg/mL inhibited the progression rate of GES-1.

The combination also inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and exhibited the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines associated with injection of I-type H. pylori in the GES-1,
particularly, at 12, 24, 48, 72 h points.

In other words, the combination protecting the stomach against gastric inflammation by blocking the activation of a protein involved in the stimulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "RC-derived diterpenoid C can block NF-ÎşB signal pathway, effectively reducing the secretion of H. pylori-induced proinflammatory cytokine and increasing the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokine".

In Helicobacter pylori infection of the lining of the stomach induces an array of inflammatory cytokine production that leads to gastritis and peptic ulcer disease, researchers at the Uttaradit Hospital conducted an experiment to investigate the effect of curcumin on the production of interleukin (IL)-8, IL-1beta, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 in gastric mucosa from H. pylori-infected gastritis patients.

Selected patients were randomly assigned to receive either OAM (Omeprazole, Amoxicillin, and Metronidazole) treatment and/or a course of curcumin.

According to the tested assays, curcumin alone may have a limited anti-bactericidal effect on H. pylori, and on the production of inflammatory cytokines compared to those of the OAM group.

However, the curcumin group showed significant relieving symptoms with a lower rate in the eradication rate of H. pylori and no decreased cytokine production.

Precisely, curcumin used alone has limited efficacy compared to that of the combination in reducing the gastric inflammation.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundant bioactive ingredient curcumin may be combined with other conventional medicines for the prevention and treatment of gastric inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
