Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.
In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.
Neurodegenerative disease is the class of condition associated with the progressive loss of neuron occurred mostly in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).
Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slowly lost of neuron in the brain that affects the memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into advanced stage.
According to the statistic, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, approximately 58 percent are living within low and middle-income countries.
Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019 and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.
Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia is focusing to improve dementia symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease.
Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the neuroprotective effect of Tussilagone (TSL) on LPS-induced neuronal cell death.
According to the tested assays, 4 sesquiterpenoids isolated from the TSL showed a significant effect against the production of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2 and tumor necrosis factor-α in LPS-treated BV-2 cells.
In other words, the sesquiterpenoids inhibited the production of free radicals and proinflammatory expression associated with the BV-2 cells oxidative stress induced by LPS.
More precisely, the inhibition against the initiation of oxidative stress was attributed to the sesquiterpenoids activity in blocking the activation of the proinflammatory (NF-κB) pathway
Furthermore, the sesquiterpenoids also inhibited LPS-induced neuronal cell death in the co-culture system by inhibiting the expression of NF-κB pathway and scavenging of ROS.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "sesquiterpenoids from Tussilago farfara may have beneficial therapeutic potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases through inhibition of microglial activation".
Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of neurological disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) Protects the Cells Against Cytotoxicity Induced by ROS
Oxidative stress is a condition associated with the long-term imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, leading to protein, lipid, and cell damage that causes chronic illness such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
In other words, the condition is caused either by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host or both.
Antioxidants are either produced by the body or injected into the body from outside sources such as the consumptions of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.
Free radicals are everywhere, including the air we breathe, the food we eat and the body daily functioning such as cell metabolism.
More precisely, any chemical compound which has an oxygen molecule can become free radical after entering our body.
In healthy individuals, the antioxidant produced by the host is more than enough to counter the bombards of free radicals. However, people with a weakened immune system such as elderly and immature immune system such as the baby may need the injection of antioxidants from outside sources.
Particularly, people with a suppressive immune system due to chemotherapy may require to intake large amounts from antioxidant-rich food regularly.
However, free radicals in moderate amount are needed for body functioning, including lower blood pressure, relax blood vessels to move blood, such as nitric oxide NO.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of disease associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the cytoprotective compound, 1-[(4S)-3,4-dihydro-4-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran-6-yl]-ethanone (1) isolated from the flower buds of Tussilago farfara L.
According to the tested analysis on (1) and other isolated compounds such as 3,4-dicaffeoyl isoquinic acid (2), trans-cinnamic acid (3), 4-hydroxyacetophenone (4), 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (5), 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (6), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (7), isoquercetrin (8), and ligucyperonol (9), compounds 1 and 3 showed significant cytoprotective activities against glucose oxidase-induced oxidative stress in mouse fibroblast NIH3T3 cells and human keratinocyte HaCaT cells comapred others.
Furthermore, the MTT assay and lactate dehydrogenase leakage differentiation also supported the possibility of compounds 1 and 3 as the potent cytoprotective agents against overexpression of ROS.
Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of disease associated with oxidative stress-induced cytotoxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Skin Against Radiodermatitis
Radiodermatitis is a skin condition caused by exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly in patients with radiotherapy during cancer treatment.
The most common symptoms of RD are red patches accompanied by blistering.
Radiodermatitis can be classified
* Acute radiodermatitis develops in a few hours or weeks after the first exposure to radiation. The condition is healed itself in a short period of time
* Chronic RD is a condition of radiodermatitis that develops months, years or even decades after radiation.
The persistent reaction of RD can lead to complication of telangiectasia, a condition of widened venules (tiny blood vessels) that cause threadlike red lines or patterns on the skin, leading to
reduced quality of life and cosmetic outcome.
Dr. Sophie Seité, the lead scientist in the differentiation of the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic radiodermatitis wrote, "Today, treatment of radiodermatitis reactions is in its infancy. Although there is insufficient evidence available to form recommendations that would prevent or reduce radiodermatitis, some advances have been made using low-level light therapy (LLLT) or vascular lasers to control the symptoms".
And, "Some recent preclinical and clinical research suggests that LLLT has bio stimulating properties which allow the tissues to regenerate and heal faster, reduce inflammation, and prevent fibrosis. Also, in late-onset radiodermatitis pulsed dye laser treatment has been shown to be beneficial in clearing radiation-induced telangiectasia. In the absence of evidence-based recommendations, the objective of this paper is to review how to prevent or manage the symptoms of radiodermatitis reactions".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to discover a natural compound for the treatment of radiodermatitis, a condition found in occurs in 95% of patients receiving radiation therapy (RT) for cancer, researchers examined the efficacy of oral curcumin, one of the biologically active components in turmeric, at reducing radiation dermatitis severity (RDS) at the end of RT, using the RDS scale, compared to placebo.
The multisite, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial involved in 686 breast cancer patients who received either four 500-mg capsules of placebo or curcumin three times daily throughout their prescribed course of RT until 1-week post-RT.
More than 3% of the curcumin-treated group showed a reduction of radiation dermatitis severity compared to placebo.
The treatment group also report a change in pain, symptoms, and quality of life however, they were not statistically significant between arms.
In other words, oral curcumin reduced radiation dermatitis severity compared to placebo but not significantly.
In order to clarify the effect of curcumin on reducing radiation dermatitis severity (RDS) researchers assessed the ability of curcumin in 30 breast cancer patients.
The study involved 30 adult females with noninflammatory breast cancer or carcinoma in situ prescribed RT (receiving radiotherapy) without concurrent chemotherapy, received 2.0 grams of curcumin or placebo orally three times per day (i.e., 6.0 grams daily) throughout their course of RT.
According to the weekly assessments and the Standard pooled variances t-test, curcumin reduced RDS compared to placebo at end of treatment.
Furthermore, 28.6% of curcumin-treated patients had moist desquamation, compared to placebo of 87.5%, according to Fisher's exact test.
Demographics, compliance, radiation skin dose, redness, pain, or symptoms are not significant differences in both groups.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "oral curcumin, 6.0 g daily during radiotherapy, reduced the severity of radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients".
Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of radiodermatitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Tea and its Bioactive Polyphenols Suppress the Onset and Progression of Osteoporosis, Medline Studies Find
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of osteoporosis, some scientists suggested.
Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by progression in the reduction of bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue and considered a major health problem in both elderly men and women.
The diseases also affect all bone in the body, including the bones of the spine, hip, and wrist
Scientists as of today do not know the exact causes of osteoporosis. However, they do know that certain factors are associated with the onset and progression of the disease.
Osteoporosis is the common disease among the elderly, probably due to the aging effect that induces nutrition deficiency such as
* Vitamin D insufficiency and reduced calcium absorption,
* Reduced hormone production, the drop of estrogen levels after menopause, can speeds up bone loss.
* Reduced production of bone mass and increased bone reabsorption.
These results suggested that osteoporosis can make the bone more fragile and easier to break. In the elderly, osteoporosis can be dangerous, as fractures can cause prolonged immobility, and required a longer healing process.
Some researchers suggested that fractures in the older population are the most common cause of blood clots or pneumonia, both of which can have fatal consequences.
Long-term use of certain medicines, such as anti-seizure drug Glucocorticoids and medical conditions such as kidney disease, Cushing's syndrome, and an overactive thyroid or parathyroid, can also increase the risk of osteoporosis.
Dr. Stephen P Tuck, the lead author in the study Osteoporosis in men said, "The incidence of osteoporotic fractures in elderly men, just as in aged women, increases exponentially with age; the rise in men, however, is some 5–10 years later than in women. Up to 50% of male osteoporosis have no identifiable etiology; however elderly males have a much higher likelihood of having an identifiable secondary cause than younger men".
Truly, both males and females share the same conditions of the onset of osteoporosis, but the onset of the disease in men is about 10 years later, compared to a woman of the same age.
Interestingly, in the observation of hip fracture in the aging population, Dr. Eric Orwoll, a physician-researcher who studies osteoporosis at Oregon Health and Science University wrote, “A third of all hip fractures occur in men, yet the problem of osteoporosis in men is frequently downplayed or ignored.”
Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
In the study to evaluate the effects of ingestion of green tea and green tea bioactive compounds in mitigating bone loss and risk of osteoporotic fractures in both elderly women and men, researchers found that the applications exert significant activities in reducing the onset of osteoporosis, through their antioxidants and initiation of the production of natural antioxidant in the body such as glutathione and enzymes (e.g., catalase and superoxide dismutase) in inhibiting the levels of ROS that facilitate the chain reaction.
Truly, the overexpression of free radicals has been associated with the change in the balance between activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, leading to osteoclasts in destroying the calcified tissue and inducing bone remodeling.
These results demonstrated that green tea and its bioactive components exhibit a significant decrease in the risk of fracture by improving bone mineral density and preventing free radicals in damage the bone-forming osteoblasts while suppressing osteoclastic activities.
Moreover, in the review of the effect of green tea and its bioactive components on bone health, researchers indicated that the ingestions display an impressive osteoprotective impact on bone mass and microarchitecture in various bone loss models associated with aging, sex hormone deficiency, and chronic inflammation.
The implication of reduced onset and progression of osteoporosis in the aging population due to sex hormone deficiency may be attributed to green tea and its bioactive compound in increasing the levels of osteocalcin, a bone formation marker, decreasing serum of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), a bone resorption marker and improving the body in the absorption of calcium.
In fact, the serum levels of osteocalcin (OC) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) are considered effective measurements in the rate of bone turn over in patients with osteoporosis.
Interestingly, application of green tea and its bioactive compound also is found to modulate the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the regulation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, through inhibiting the production of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the liver in initiating inflammation and reducing levels of interleukin-1 and 6(IL-1-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), the sensitive markers of systemic inflammation.
This differentiation were supported by the study in the evaluation of the efficacy of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) at mitigating bone loss and microstructure deterioration along with related mechanisms in 40 androgen-deficient aged male rats, a model of male osteoporosis, randomly assigned to received A 2 (sham vs. orchidectomy) × 2 (no GTP and 0.5% GTP in drinking water) for 16 weeks.
At the end of the experiment, researchers found that rats treated with GTP demonstrate an increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, bone mineral density, and trabecular volume, number, and strength of femur; trabecular volume and thickness and bone formation in both the proximal tibia and periosteal tibial shaft, and decreased eroded surface in the proximal tibia and endocortical tibial shaft, and increased liver glutathione peroxidase activity.
The findings indicated a strong implication of green tea polyphenols in decreasing cortical and trabecular bone loss and increasing both bone density by stimulating the overexpression of bone formation and reducing bone resorption via antioxidant capacity.
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered functional foods in ameliorating early-onset, progression, and combined with standard medicine for the treatment of osteoporosis.
However, intake of green tea supplements should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Inhibits the Diseases Associated with Dengue Virus Serotype 2
Infection is a condition that caused the invasion of stimuli and micro pathogens, including viral infection.
Similar to bacterial infection, both infections shared common characteristics by spreading through coughing and sneezing by and contact with infected people, especially through kissing and sex.
However, unlike bacteria, a virus replicates only inside the living cells of an organism. Viruses can infect all types of life forms, including humans and microorganisms, such as bacteria and archaea.
Anti-viral effects are the process that certain substances are used to cause the destruction of a virus.
In the acute phase of viral infection, depending on the types of viruses, the viruses after entering the body start to attack the specific host cells. The cold and flu virus will attack the cells in the respiratory system and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, will attack the white blood cells of the immune system,
The viral infection has been known to carry over some different stage, after successfully attaching to the host cell, the virus to release its mRNA into the host cell, leading to the recruit of the host cell's enzymes to accelerate the viral multiplying, then breaking free from the host cell to start the cycle all over again.
The white blood cells in the systematic immune response in the acute phase of infection stimulate the production of the proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to protect our body by killing off the invaders.
The battle between the immune white blood cell and viral invaders in most cases an in the flavor of the side of the immune system, the invaders are killed and the infection is healed.
However, if the immune system can not kill off the invaders with 3 - 8 weeks, it then will adapt to the change, leading to chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.
Dengue virus (DENV) belongs to the Flavivirus genus and is transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Ae. Albopictus mosquitoes, found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In severe cases, dengue virus serotype 2 has been found to induce symptoms of severe plasma leakage, severe hemorrhage, and/or severe organ impairment.
Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the cytotoxic concentration and the inhibitory effect of extracts or fractions from Urtica dioica, Taraxacum officinale, Calea integrifolia and Caesalpinia pulcherrima on the dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV2 replication on the BHK-21 cell line.
According to the tested differentiation,
* The methanolic extracts at 60 °C of T. officinale and U. dioica showed the higher inhibitory effects on DENV2 replication.
* The chemical analysis suggested that the higher activity fraction is found for U. dioica and T. officinale, at the IC50 values of 165.7 ± 3.85 and 126.1 ± 2.80 μg/ml, respectively.
The compounds which exhibited the efficacy of T. officinale were luteolin and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and quercetin diclycosides compared to the compounds in the active fraction chlorogenic acid, quercetin derivatives and flavonol glycosides (quercetin and kaempferol) in the U. dioica.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Two fractions from U. dioica and T. officinale methanolic extracts with anti-dengue activity were found. The compounds present in both fractions were identified, several recognized molecules have demonstrated activity against other viral species".
Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of dengue virus serotype 2, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Inhibits the Acute Coronary Syndrome in Patient with Renal Deficiency
The acute coronary syndrome is a medical emergency associated with a range of conditions caused by sudden, reduced blood flow to the heart, leading to heart muscle damage and brain apoptosis depending on the affected location.
Acute coronary syndrome is associated with the severity of buildup of plaque deposits in and on the walls of the coronary arteries.
Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.
Arteries formed a part of blood vessels and circulatory system with function to deliver oxygen and nutrients to heart muscles.
Depending on the severity of the blockage, a complete blockage is life-threatening. Symptoms of the acute coronary syndrome, chest pain or discomfort, pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, neck, back or stomach, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea.
If the chest pain is persistent with no sign of stopping, please call 911 immediately.
The most common treatment of acute coronary syndrome is medicine to reopen the artery. However, in severe cases, angioplasty (a inflate a small balloon) may be necessary.
Traditionally, over many decades, patients with acute coronary syndrome are likely to be treated by oxygen therapy.
Dr. Pankaj Garg in the examing the effects of oxygen therapy on patients with acute coronary syndrome wrote, " However, more recently, there have been many reports of harmful effects of high-flow oxygen in ACS patients where the patient might not be hypoxic".
Anf "High flow oxygen has been shown previously to reduce cardiac output,2 attributes to arterial vasoconstriction3–5 and also to increase systemic vascular resistance.6 More recently, two systematic reviews suggest that the routine use of high-flow oxygen in uncomplicated myocardial infarction may result in greater infarct size and possibly increase the risk of mortality".
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China. The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
On finding a potential compound that inhibits acute coronary syndrome, researchers examined the neuroprotective effects of Chinese herbal medicines in the cardiovascular outcome among patients with the acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and renal insufficiency after the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
The study included population consisted of 215 subjects in the control group who were treated with western medicine standard therapy, and 211 subjects in the treatment group who were treated with Chinese herbal medicines (Fufang Chuanxiong Capsule and Xinyue Capsule) for 6 months.
Participants are from the 5C trial with post-PCI patients suffered from ACS with mild-to-moderate renal insufficiency (30 mL•min-1•1.73 m-2 < estimated glomerular filtration rate≤89 mL•min-1•1.73 m-2).
According to the endpoints including the composite of cardiac death, nonfatal recurrent myocardial infarction, and ischemia-driven revascularization assays, after one year of following up of 2 groups
*There were 16 cases of the primary endpoint in the control group and 6 cases of the primary endpoint in the treatment group with an absolute risk reduction ARR=0.046. elative risk RR= 0.38.
* There were 15 cases of secondary endpoint in the control group and 5 cases of secondary endpoint in the treatment with ARR= 0.041 and RR=0.34
In other words, the treatment of Chinese and Western medicines showed a strong effect in reducing the risk of acute coronary syndrome in patients with renal deficiency.
However, The eGFR levels associated with the renal functioning in the treatment group were significantly higher, compared to the higher levels in the control group.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Chinese herbal medicines plus western medicine standard therapy improved clinical outcomes in patients with ACS and mild-to-moderate renal insufficiency. Additionally, this study also demonstrated Chinese herbal medicines were useful in deferring the decline of renal function".
Taken altogether, herbal Angelica in combination with other herbal medicines that may be considered a remedy for the treatment of acute coronary syndrome, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Inhibits the Risk and Onset of Oral Cancer
The mouth formed part of the digestive system is an oval-shaped cavity inside the skull that processes 2 main functions of eating and speaking.
Cancer is a group of chronic diseases characterized by cell growth disorderly that starts on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the mouth.
Oral cancer is any malignant cell growth in the tissue located in the oral cavity, including the tissue of the lips or the tongue, cheek lining, floor of the mouth, gums (gingiva), and the roof of the mouth (palate).
According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, in 2017, 4,700 Canadians were diagnosed with oral cancer, including 3,250 men and 1,450 women. In the same year, the disease also caused the death of 1,250 Canadians.
The exact causes of oral cancer are unknown. Epidemiologically, aging, smoking, excessive alcohol drinking, chewing tobacco and betel nut, long-term use of mouth wash, male ganders are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with the disease.
Some researchers suggested that poor hygiene that leads to advanced gingivitis may be a major culprit that causes the onset of oral cancer.
Dr. Roshni Ramesh, the lead scientist wrote, "Gingival enlargements are frequently encountered in dental practice. There are different types of gingival enlargements and they vary according to the etiologic factors and pathologic processes that produce them".
And, "Oral cancers especially squamous cell carcinomas present with variations in clinical presentation and the sites affected".
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of proanthocyanidins, compounds highly concentrated in dietary cranberries and grapes on oral cancer.
The oral squamous cell carcinoma cell lines, CAL27 and SCC25 were used to compare the effects of cranberry and grape seed extract on phenotypic behaviors of these oral cancers.
According to the tested analysis, administration of cranberry and grape seed extracts, in a dose-dependent manner showed significant inhibition of the proliferation of both oral cancer cell lines.
Proteins associated with the promotion of cancer cell apoptosis were significantly stimulated by the injection of cranberry and grape seed extracts.
The pathways associated with cancer cell adhesion, cell morphology, and cell cycle division were also inhibited by both extracts.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study represents one of the first comparative investigations of cranberry and grape seed extracts and their anti-proliferative effects on oral cancers".
And, "cranberry and grape seed extract not only inhibit oral cancer proliferation but also that the mechanism of this inhibition may function by triggering key apoptotic regulators in these cell lines".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
