Gut microbiota is a complex community with over a trillion microorganisms that lives in our digestive tracts.
According to the ESMN, the microbiota can weigh up to 2 kg, including 1/3 of gut microbiota found in most people, comapred to 2/3 that are specific to individuals depending on geography, environment, and lifestyle.
In healthy individuals, the ratio of good and bad microorganisms is balanced. In other words, healthy gut microbiota levels maintain the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract.
A balanced ratio of gut microbiota plays a critical role in the digestion of certain foods that the stomach and small intestine have not been able to digest, in the production of vitamins, improvement of digestive functioning, and modulation of the immune function.
The use of antibiotics has been found to damage the gut ecosystem, leading to certain chronic illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.
Unhealthy gut microbiota has been found to
* Decrease the interaction with the immune function against inflammatory immune disorders.
* Increase the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.
* Reduce nutrient extraction from the diet, thus increasing the risk of obesity and obesity complications.
* Increase the risk of control brain insulin signaling and metabolite levels that can lead to bad neurobehaviors.
Further, the unbalanced ratio of gut microbiota functions also alters immune homeostasis, leading to the onset of autoimmune disorders which in turn can affect the development of not only intestinal but also systemic autoimmune diseases.
Compared to probiotics, the prebiotics is compound in food that induces the growth or activity of beneficial microorganisms in the gut.
In other definition, it is a special form of dietary fiber that acts as a fertilizer that promotes the growth of good bacteria in your gut.
In the gastrointestinal tract, prebiotics can alter the composition of organisms in the gut microbiome.
In other words, prebiotics raises the levels of healthy bacteria against bad bacteria.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the promotion of digestive functioning, researchers examined the effect of cranberries' impact on gut microbiota.
The randomized, double-blind, cross-over, controlled design trial included a total of 11 healthy adults consumed for 5 days each a control diet (animal-based diet (meats, dairy products, and simple sugars) plus 30 g/day placebo powder) and a cranberry diet (animal-based diet plus 30 g/day freeze-dried whole cranberry powder).
According to the tested analysis of the stool, urine, and blood samples, compared to the pre-control diet, the control diet modified 46 taxonomic clades in the gut, including an increase in the abundance of Firmicutes and decrease in Bacteroidetes and increased bacteria-derived deoxycholic acid and decreased acetate and butyrate in stool
In other words, the control diet induces a significant change of gut microbiotas by favoring the "bad" organisms.
Comapred to the post control diet, the cranberry diet modified 9 taxonomic clades, including a decrease in the abundance of Firmicutes and an increase in Bacteroidetes in the flavor of the good organisms in the gut.
Furthermore, cranberry promoted the balancing ratio of gut microbiotas by attenuating control diet-induced increase in secondary bile acids and decrease the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and increase urinary anthocyanins and bacterially derived phenolic acids.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "an animal-based diet altered the microbiota composition to a less favorable profile, increased carcinogenic bile acids, and decreased beneficial SCFA. Cranberries attenuated the impact of the animal-based diet on microbiota composition, bile acids, and SCFA, evidencing their capacity to modulate the gut microbiota".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the promotion of gut health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Angelica Sinensis, the Natural Anticancer Herbal Remedy
Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.
However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.
The American Cancer Society wrote, "Cancer may also cause symptoms like fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue), or weight loss. Because cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply, or they may release substances that change the way the body makes energy from food. Cancer can also cause the immune system to react in ways that produce these signs and symptoms" and " Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause symptoms that are not usually linked to cancer".
Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.
According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.
Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.
The prevalent factors associated with the risk of cancer are age, excessive alcohol drinking, exposure to cancer causing-substances, diseases associated with chronic inflammation, unhealthy diet, hormone therapy, use of immunosuppression.
Cancers are the second leading cause of death worldwide besides heart diseases. Believe or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, scientists examined Radix Angelica Sinensis (Danggui in Chinese) is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). N-butylidenephthalide (BP), a bioactive compound in Dangui, is a potential antitumor agent for various cancer types.
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
According to the experimental results,* Danggui users were found to have an increased survival rate when compared with Danggui nonusers (log-rank test p = 0.002).
* The use of Danggui highly associated with decreased mortality (the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of Danggui users was 0.72 [95 % CI, 0.57-0.92] (p = 0.009).
* The in vitro results showed that BP inhibited gastric cancer cell proliferation, and triggered cellular apoptosis depending on the activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.
* According to the RNA-seq analysis, BP induced an increase of REDD1 expression that inhibits mTOR signaling, thus inhibiting gastric cancer growth.
* BP suppressed the growth of AGS xenograft tumor in vivo.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Danggui can prolong the survival rate of gastric cancer patients in Taiwan. BP caused gastric cancer cell death through the activation of mitochondria-intrinsic pathway and induced the REDD1 expression leading to mTOR signal pathway inhibition in gastric cancer cells".
Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered anti-cancer activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Protects the Liver Against Inflammation
The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm, and above your stomach.
The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxins by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.
Additionally, the liver also inhibits oxidative stress by producing the antioxidant enzyme that counters the expression of free radicals in the body.
Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.
Acute inflammation is a short-term condition caused by tissue injury, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and heat to the affected area. depending on the size of the injury. Some patients with acute inflammation may also experience the symptom of loss of function.
In acute inflammation, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of platelets to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.
Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.
Liver inflammation is a medical condition d with autoimmune hepatitis and hepatitis and medications, drugs, toxins, and alcohol.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of liver diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers compared the effect of a polyphenol-rich cranberry extract (CBE) and high fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice on hepatic inflammation.
0.8% CBE treatment for 10 weeks showed no change in body weight or visceral fat mass compared to high fat-fed control mice.
However, CBE exerted a significant decrease in plasma alanine aminotransferase (31%) associated with liver stress and histological severity of NAFLD by a 33% decrease in the area and a 29% decrease in lipid droplet size, compared to high fat-fed mice.
Hepatic protein levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and C-C chemokine ligand 2, hepatic mRNA levels of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4,) and nuclear factorκ B (NFκB), associated with the inflammation were also reduced by 28%, 19%, 63%, and 24% and respectively, following CBE supplementation.
Furthermore, the genes related to the inflammasome of the nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, pyrin domain-containing-3 also were decreased by injection of CBE supplementation.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "CBE reduced... hepatic inflammation in high fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice"
And "These effects appear to be related to mitigation of TLR4-NFκB related signaling"
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment and management of liver inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Protects the Bladder Against Radiation Cystitis in Prostate Cancer Patients
Cystitis is a medical condition associated with inflammation of the bladder, leading to the symptoms of bladder irritation and swelling. Women are prone to the condition compared to men.
The most common cause of bladder cystitis is a bacterial infection involved in a urinary tract infection (UTI). However, radiotherapy, long-term use of certain medicines and hygiene products have also been found to induce bladder inflammation.
The most common symptoms of cystitis are frequent urge to urinate, urge to urinate after you’ve emptied your bladder, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, pain during sexual intercourse, and sensations of pressure or bladder fullness.
In serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms of fever, blood in your urine, and cramping in your abdomen or back.
The prostate warped around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder that makes some of the semen carry sperm.
Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by abnormal cell growth in the tissue of the prostate. The low-growing prostate cancer may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.
Conventionally, antibiotics are effective for the treatment of cystitis if the bacteria that cause the infection has been identified.
Most cases of acute cystitis are treated by nitrofurantoin monohydrate/macrocrystals, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) accompanied by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce pain and inflammation.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of prostate diseases, researchers examined the effect of highly standardized cranberry capsules (containing 72 mg proanthocyanidins [PACS]) compared with that of placebo capsules on the incidence and severity of radiation cystitis.
The double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled study included 41 men with prostate cancer who took one capsule a day at breakfast during treatment for 2 weeks.
According to the tested analysis,* Cranberry capsules (65%) group showed a reduced incidence of cystitis compared with those that took placebo capsules.
* The severe cystitis was reduced to 30% of men in the cranberry group compared to 45% in the placebo.
* Furthermore, cranberry capsules group also significantly reduced symptoms of pain/burning.
* Additionally, the cranberry capsules group also showed a stronger urine stream and a decrease of the used significantly fewer pads/liners, compared to placebo.
Based on the results, researchers said, "Men receiving radiation therapy for prostate cancer may benefit from using cranberry capsules, particularly those on low hydration regimens or with baseline urinary symptoms".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cystitis.in prostate cancer patients, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fennel, The Herbal Remedy Which Protects Our Body Against The Onset of Acute Inflammation and Chronic Inflammatory Diseases, Scientists Find
Fennel may process a strong anti-inflammatory activity in reducing the risk of tissue injury and cell apoptosis, some scientists suggested.
Acute inflammation is a natural and systematic immune response to protect our body against the invasion of foreign bacteria and viruses by the initiated production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection.
However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines initiated by the immune system for a prolonged period of time may lead to cell damage and sometimes death of the healthy cells in the infectious site and nearby cells.
These complications can also cause improper healing for the forming of scars and damage to the tissue of the organ, affecting and limiting the organs functioning, such as liver scars caused by hepatitis virus infection.
Badly enough, some proteins process the duo functions of pro and anti-inflammation. Under abnormal conditions, they can switch from their original action of anti-inflammatory cytokines to pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Furthermore, chronic inflammation occurred that lasts for months or years when the immune system response to the site of infection failure to eliminate agents that cause acute inflammation.
An autoimmune disorder that attacks normal healthy tissue, mistaking them for pathogens that can also cause chronic inflammatory disease.
Most cases of inflammation, are treated with NSAID's, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. However, in some people intake of these medications can cause common and serious side effects, including gastrointestinal issues, such as pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and stomach ulcers, kidney problems, anemia,.... and swelling in the leg.
If you are presently taking anti-inflammatory medicine, please make sure that you discuss the adverse effects with your doctor.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
Herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...
According to a study of BALB/C mice were intraperitoneally administered anethole (62.5, 125, 250, or 500 mg/kg) 1 h before intratracheal treatment with LPS (1.5 mg/kg) and sacrificed after 4 h, researchers found that in the anethole treatment group exerts a significant increase of numbers of mobile white blood cells macrophages and neutrophils, the first immune response to the infectious site.
Furthermore, the application of LPS also induced the production of inflammatory mediators such as matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) all systematic inflammatory cytokines in response to cellular damage and tissue injury.
Moreover, LPS also exhibited the overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) observed in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in facilitated cellular cytotoxicity.
In the compared nontreatment group, the injection anethole group demonstrated a strong anti-inflammatory effect through decrease activities of proinflammatory factors without affecting the immune activity in protects against infection.
Additional analysis also found that the treatment group reduced acute lung injury caused by injection LPS through its antioxidants and induced production of host natural antioxidants in the body tissue.
The inhibited LPS results were attributed to anethole effect in suppressed the activation of NF-κB in signaling the production of inflammatory cytokines by blocking the initiation of IκB-α degradation by inhibited TRAF2 in the induction of inflammation through TNF receptor superfamily members and NIK, a key signaling molecule of the noncanonical NF-κB.
Interestingly, further investigation of anethole as an inhibitor of TNF-induced NF-kB activation (an early response) as monitored by electrophoretic mobility shift assay, by suppression of IkBa phosphorylation and NF-kB reporter gene, researchers also indicated that
* Anethole also suppressed TNF-induced activation of the transcription factor AP-1 in regulated gene expression in response to a variety of stimuli, including LPS application.
*c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) with function in response to stress stimuli, such as cytokines,
And
* MAPKkinase in signal inflammatory response through transmitting information from a receptor on the surface of the cell to the DNA in the nucleus of the cell.
* Application of anethole also suppressed TNF-induced both lipid peroxidation and ROS generation, through the stimulated production of natural antioxidants in the host and itself, resulting in balancing the ratio of antioxidant and ROS expression.
The illustration and differentiation were elite by the experiment in the application of TNF (100 pM) with the cells pretreated for 240 and 120 min with anethole, NF-kB activation was almost completely inhibited.
However, the inhibition decreased gradually with decreased pre-incubation time.
Taken together, fennel and its bioactive anethole may be considered as a functional food in reduced risk and treatment in acute and chronic inflammatory related-diseases through the properties like a pro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

Cranberry Promotes the Cardio-Metabolic Health
Cardiometabolic risk is a condition that estimates the possibility of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease and diabetes mellitus.
Cardioprotection is a process including the use of substances associated with the preservation of the function and viability of cardiac muscle tissue by the reintroduction of oxygenic blood flow back to the tissues.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions caused by the underlying damage of blood vessels and the heart.
More precisely, CVD can be coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina, myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack), or stroke, depending on the location of the blockage or disruption,
According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately 84 million people in this US living with some form of cardiovascular disease. The condition has also been found to cause the death of about 2,200 people a day.
Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of arteries, leading to the narrowing of the artery and reducing oxygen risk blood flow to the heart and brain.
Depending on the location of the blockage, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the brain, it will cause the death of the brain cells, leading to stroke.
However, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the heart, it will cause damage to the heart tissues, leading to heart disease.
Most common disease associated with atherosclerosis is coronary artery disease. Plaques are made up of cholesterol, calcium and other chemical substances in the artery
Most people with atherosclerosis are asymptomatic at the early stage.
Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulins in the bloodstream. or insulins in the bloodstream are not used properly to convert glucose to energy.
Epidemiologically, diabetes is caused by either the beta cells in the pancreas died-off or insulin receptors with a function that use insulin to convert glucose to energy clogged-up by fat or cholesterol.
In a healthy individual, after eating, the rise of blood glucose triggers the production of insulin by the pancreas into the bloodstream After you eat, your blood sugar (glucose) rises. This rise in glucose triggers your pancreas to release insulin into the bloodstream that travels through the blood to your body's cells before converting glucose into energy or store it to use later.
In other words, insulin released by the pancreas joints with the Insulin receptors on the outer part of a cell that binds insulin in the blood to convert glucose to energy.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cardiometabolic health, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium berry fruit in modulating gut microbiota function and cardiometabolic risk factors.
In cardiometabolic health, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites improved the
serum lipid profiles reduced the levels of blood pressure.
Furthermore, the endothelial functions associated with vascular relaxation and contraction, glucoregulation involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism. and a variety of biomarkers associated with inflammation and oxidative stress in the induction of CVD and diabetes were also inhibited by the cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites
Based on the findings, researchers said, " These results warrant further research, particularly studies dedicated to the elucidation of dose-response relations, pharmacokinetic/metabolomics profiles, and relevant biomarkers of action with the use of fully characterized cranberry products.".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of cardiometabolic health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size, and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Natural Whole Food for Prevention and Treatment of Dandruff
Honey may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of dandruff, a common skin problem of many adults, some scientists suggested
Dandruff is a condition of the scalp most commonly caused by the dry skin resulting from dry air.
However, in many instances, the condition also is associated with seborrheic dermatitis. leading to rough, scaly skin on the scalp.
In other words, patients with oily skin accompanied by seborrheic dermatitis can lead to overexpression of yeast that causes the development of the large white flakes or yellow scales due to uneven shedding and clumping of dead skin cells.
Belief or not dandruff affects over 50% of the general population.
There are many causes of dandruff. Researchers suggested that dry skin, use of wrong kinds of hair products and skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema are associated with the onset of dandruff.
In some people, an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus can also cause dandruff.
The increase of age hormone imbalance and prolonged periods of stress are the most common prevalent risk factors associated with the condition.
Most cases of dandruff can be treated with daily shampoo to reduce the oil on the scalp. In severe cases, due to overexpression of fungi, pyrithione zinc shampoos may be recommended.
Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
Dandruff, if left untreated can cause itchy and inflamed scalp that it lead to temporary hair loss.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of dandruff with no side effects, researchers examine the anti-dandruff effects from honey, a bee-derived, supersaturated solution composed mainly of fructose and glucose, and contains proteins and amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and other minor components.
The application of honey exerted a significant effect in reducing dandruff, through its moisturizing and antimicrobial property.
The effective doses range between 1 and 10%, but concentrations up to 70% can be reached by mixing with oils, gel, and emulsifiers, or polymer entrapment.
With an aim to reaffirming the honey anti-dandruff activity, a researcher at the Dubai Specialised Medical Centre and Medical Research Labs, investigated the potential use of topical application of crude honey in the management of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.
The study included 30 patients (20 patients were males and 10 were females, their ages ranged between 15 and 60 years) with chronic seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, face, and front of the chest.
Before applying honey to treat the condition, participants showed conditions of scaling, itching, and hair loss. The lesions were scaling macules, papules, and dry white plaques with crust and fissures.
All patients were asked to apply diluted crude honey (90% honey diluted in warm water) every other day on the lesions with gentle rubbing for 2-3 mins. And, honey was left for 3 hr before gentle rinsing with warm water.
After 4 weeks of treatment, honey showed a significant effect on the prophylactic phase, which lasted for six months.
Furthermore, half of the patients treated with the topical honey once weekly and the other half served as control.
The treatment group demonstrated a reduction of Itching and disappeared scaling within one week. Skin lesions were healed and disappeared completely within 2 weeks.
Moreover, honey administration also improved in hair loss.
None of the patients treated with the honey application once weekly experienced a relapse for six months
Dr. Al-Waili NS, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "crude honey could markedly improve seborrheic dermatitis and associated hair loss and prevent relapse when applied weekly".
The findings clearly suggested that honey may be considered a replacement of chemical ingredients for the prevention and treatment of dandruff associated with seborrheic dermatitis, with no side effects.
