Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in reducing pain through its anti-antispasmodic property, some scientists suggested.
Anti-antispasmodic activity is an action that relieves, prevents, or lowers the incidence of muscle spasms, especially those of adnominal muscle in the uterus and smooth muscle such as in the bowel wall.
Certain hormones which have the function in controlling muscle contraction and relaxation are found to associate with the intensity of muscle spasms, if overexpressed.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...
In the findings, the natural antispasmodic ingredients with little or no side effects, Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, and colleagues launched an investigation to compare doses of 2.5 and 10.0 mL/L of an alcoholic extract with other Germanic medicinal plants, including Melissa officinalis, Rosmarinus officinalis, Mentha piperita, Matricaria chamomilla, Carum carvi, and Citrus aurantium.
The experiment was carried out on guinea pig ileum by using acetylcholine and histamine as spasmogens.
After taking into all account co and confounders account, researchers found that application tested doses of alcoholic extract of the fruits of Foeniculum vulgare exert a significant anti antispasmodic activity by inhibiting the acetylcholine and histamine-induced guinea pig ileal contractions.
Further analysis of the effects of n essential oil obtained from the fruits of Foeniculum vulgare at the doses of 25 μg/ and 10 μg/mL, researchers discovered that the injections also demonstrated the similar as of the extract but through the inhibition of hormone oxytocin and prostaglandin activities.
Oxytocin and prostaglandin are hormones with a function that causes contraction of the muscles of the uterus. Over contraction of muscles of the uterus is a major cause of abdominal pain in women.
Additionally, the comparison of the antispasmodic property of 4 different herbal medicine that has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of abdominal pain in Swiss mice, including fennel according to the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) also found that all herbs used in the testing display a substantial reduction of abdominal pain without inducing any adverse effects.
In the experiment carried out in the guinea pig, the application of fennel also showed significant relaxation in different agonists like histamine and acetylcholine-induced contractions in guinea-pig ileum.
Interestingly, in the study to investigate whether oral fennel drop has any effects in primary dysmenorrhea, the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps of the uterus, researchers conducted an experiment on sixty college students who suffer from primary dysmenorrhea.
The participants were randomly assigned to two groups and followed up for two cycles. The treatment group was given fennel drop and the control group was given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or oral contraceptive pills.
After assessing the final report, researchers suggested that both groups exert a clinically significant effect in reducing pain. However, the comparison of bleeding severity in the study group before and after the intervention on the first day, second day, the third day, the fourth day, and fifth day was 0.948, 0.330, 0.508, 0.583, 0.890, respectively.
Dr. Bokaie M, the lead scientist said, "fennel can be effective in reducing the severity of dysmenorrhea, but it has an unpleasant taste in view of most of the volunteers".
Taken all together, fennel may be considered a secondary and therapeutical form of treatment in reducing pain caused by overexpression of hormones that control the muscle contraction through its antispasmodic activity.

9 Foods Stimulate the Over Growth of Fungus Candida, Scientists Suggest
Candida albicans are members of a large group of microorganism whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeast(2)(3), fungi(4)(5)(6), and mold(6) that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.
Non-albicans Candida (NAC) species cause 35-65% of all candidaemias in the general patient population(1).
According to joint study, in many cases, biofilm(microorganisms with cells stick to each other on a surface) formation(7) gene mutations(8) and overexpression of genes(9)(10) are often associated with increased Candida resistance toward antifungal agents.
Foods stimulated an overgrowth of fungus candida
1. Fruits and artificial ingredients
The high sugar content in fruit feeds Candida except for green apples, citrus, berries, and avocado(186)
and artificial ingredients can depress the immune system(187).
2. Aged cheese(188)
Candida famata found in aged cheese may induce invasive candidiasis(188).
3. Additive and preservation
Men made chemicals can disrupt the digestive track friendly bacteria and allow candida overgrowth(189)(190) such as citric acid. Non-organic food like meat or eggs can also contain antibiotics and steroids for faster growth(191).
4. Alcohol(192)
Alcohol can depress the liver(193) and the immune system(194)(195), causing overgrowth candida.
5. Caffeine, sugar, and sweetener
Caffeine(196)(197), sugar and sweetener(198) all harmful to the body and feed candida
6. Gluten
Gluten is a protein composite that appears in foods processed from wheat and related species
that can cause immune suppression(199)(200)(201).
7. Mushrooms
Mushroom which is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source can promote fungus overgrowth(202).
8. Condiments(203)
Condiment which is a sauce or seasoning added to food to impart a particular flavor can depress the immune system(204), causing candida.
9. Vinegar but not apple cider vinegar
Vinegar is an acidic liquid produced from the fermentation of ethanol in a process that yields its key ingredient, an acetic acid which can deplete the stomach of acids and cause inflammation(205)(206) in the digestive tract, including acetic acid ulcer(205).

Herbal Angelica Sinensis, A Promising Anti-Glioblastoma Drug
Cancers are the class of chronic and medical conditions characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably that start on the inner lining of the tissue of an organ due to the alternation of cell DNA.
At the advanced stage, most cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs through blood and fluids circulation.
Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers that begins within the brain, caused mostly by abnormal astrocytic cells and dead cells (necrosis). The disease is considered one of the most aggressive cancers induced by the alternation of cells originated from the brain, including the cerebral hemispheres.
According to statistics, most patients diagnosed with cancer die within 12 to 15 months. Less than 5% of patients are survived longer than five years.
If you are male you are at 1.5 higher risks of glioblastoma, compared to the female's counterpart.
The causes of glioblastoma are unknown, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition and environmental factors, previous radiotherapy, a weakened immune system may be some risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.
However, most cases of GBM are diagnosed at an older age with a median age of 64. Some researchers suggested that aging with the change of body function may be one of the major risk factors that cause the incidence.
Most patients with GBM experience symptoms of brain swelling caused by the overexpression of the fluid surrounding the tumor.
Conventionally, due to the nature of rapid growth, surgery is necessary to relieve the brain pressure and remove the tumor as much as possible, followed by radiation and chemotherapy.
Furthermore, the condition also shares the common symptoms of other types of cancer such as gastrointestinal discomforts accompanied by personality changes, and symptoms similar to those of a stroke.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases, scientists examined the effects of Angelica Sinensis on glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).
Angelica or Dang Gui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
According to tested analysis, Angelica sinensis accelerates apoptosis by their key substances influencing factors of apoptosis pathways, including
* Biochemical stress associated with cell death such as oxidative stress in the induction of cytotoxicity.
* Induced DNA damage to the cancer cells by enhancing the tumor suppressor protein such as p53.
* Lack of growth factors involved in cell proliferative and differentiation.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "our review puts emphasis on the potential of natural products in GBM treatment by regulating multiple malignant cancer-related pathways solving pending problems such as reducing toxicity and side effect".
Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Has No Effects on Urinary Disorders in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Patients
Infection is an inflammatory condition caused by a microbial invasion on body tissues
Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.
Most common symptoms of bacterial infection include redness and heat, swelling, fever, pain at the site of infection.
Urinary tract infection (UTIs) mostly occurred in women is an infection that affects the bladder and urethra caused mostly by bacterial strains Escherichia coli (E. coli), commonly found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
UTIs have been found to limit the function of the bladder and induce kidney infection.
The most common symptoms of urinary infection are persistent urge to urinate, urinary burning sensation, cloudy urine, and smelly urine.
In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of blood in the urine and bladder and pelvic pain.
The most common risk factors of urinary tract infection are gender, females are more like to have UTI comapred to males, sexual activity, use of birth control, and menopausal women.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) casued by the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers.
MS causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.
SHARON BEGLEY in examing the genetic preposition involved in MS wrote, " A newly discovered genetic mutation gives people who carry it a whopping 70 percent chance of developing multiple sclerosis, potentially opening the way toward new therapies for a debilitating neurological disorder whose ultimate cause has stumped researchers for decades".
The author continued, "The 70 percent chance of developing MS compares to a 0.1 percent risk in the general population, and the 100 or so previously known genetic variants increase the chance of MS to only about 0.3 percent at most, with no single gene packing much of a punch".
In other words, people having certain genes inherited from the parent are at a substantial risk of MS developing comapred to people who do not.
According to the statistics, in 2010/2011, approximately 93,500 Canadians were diagnosed with the disease or 290 cases per 100,000 population. Believe it or not, MS is the most prevalent in Canada comapred to other parts of the world.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the prevention of urinary infections, researchers examined the effect of cranberry extract (CE) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients suffering from urinary disorders.
The prospective, double-blind study included a total of 171 adult MS outpatients with urinary disorders presenting at eight centers received either cranberry extract ((36 mg proanthocyanidins per day) or matching placebo for a year.
According to the results of follow up, the were no difference between cranberry and placebo).
In other words, there was no difference in time to first symptomatic UTI distribution across 1 year, with an estimated hazard ratio of 0.99, 95% CI [0.61, 1.60] (p = 0.97).
Furthermore, the econdary endpoints and tolerance also did not differ between groups.
Based on the findings, researchers aid, "Taking cranberry extract versus placebo twice a day did not prevent UTI occurrence in MS patients with urinary disorders".
Taken altogether, cranberry can not be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of urinary disorders in MS patients, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fennel, The Best Herbal Remedy Which Detoxes Your Kidneys Through Promoting Excess Fluids Secretion, Public Medical Library Revealed
Fennel may have a potential and positive effect of eliminating excess water and toxin from our body, some scientists suggested.
Diuresis is a medicine with a function to stimulate increased production of urine.
Detoxification is a process of eliminated toxin accumulation from our body. In some cases, the function may only target some specific organs, such as kidneys, liver,..... and lung.
According to traditional medicine, detoxification is a necessary process to enhance and optimize the functions of our body by cleansing away substances that may reduce or cause harm to our body organs and tissue.
According to the Tao of Wellness in the address of the importance of detoxification of Traditional Chinese Medicine wrote, " Our body is automatically programmed to cleanse itself daily. However, with our fast-paced modern lifestyle and exposure to an increasing number of harmful and toxic substances, our body’s natural cleansing ability has become overworked and compromised" and "Many signs and symptoms attributed to stress are now being linked to exposure from harmful substances such as PCBs, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, and mercury in food and liquids as well as dioxins and formaldehyde in the air".
Truly, harmful and toxic substances not removed from our body may have substantially negative implications to cause many serious illnesses, such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases,..... and reproductive ailments.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
The herb or food has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

In an animal model, according to the John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. in the evaluation of the re-toxic effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Foeniculum vulgare var dulce (D.C) root, researchers found that application of the extract exerts a significant activity in flushing out of excess water and toxin from the body through increased kidney function in secretion of fluids.
The result of these properties was observed by an increase in urine flow and urinary sodium excretion.
The efficacy in the cleansing body was also found linearly in dose depending manner.
Continuously, in further examine the efficacy of fennel powder, extract, and oil on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity through a study of a total of 35 adult female Sprague Dawley rats classified into five groups with the first group kept on the standard diet all over the period of the experiment. and the other groups administered gentamicin (100 mg/kg/day for 7 days i.p), followed by either control (+ve) group or treated groups with fennel powder, extract, and oil for 45 days, at the end of the study, researchers found that
* Injected gentamicin group served as control exhibited strong nephrotoxicity manifested by increasing levels of kidney function indicator, serum nitric oxide (NO), and kidney malondialde(MDA) however, this group of rats also exerted a significant decrease in weight gain.
Increased expression of serum nitric oxide (NO) and kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) is an indicator of severe oxidative stress caused by an imbalanced ratio of ROS and antioxidants in the host.
* Gentamicin groups treated with fennel powder, extract and oil demonstrated an improved level of urea and uric acid in comparison to control (+ve) and displayed an improvement of antioxidant enzymes, serum superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, and glutathione transferase (GST) and decrease of serum NO in compared to control (+ve) group.
These results addressed the important antioxidant effect of fennel extracts.
Furthermore, the applications not only inhibited the levels of free radicals and theirs' chain reactive activities but also stimulated the production of antioxidants found in the host tissue.
* Moreover, the group treated with fennel oil restored the normal values of kidney antioxidant enzymes compared with the normal group and other treatment groups.
Dr. Soheir Ahamed Al-Masri, the lead author, after taking into account other co and confounders said, "fennel powder, extract and oil have a potent antioxidant and ameliorate in rats gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats".
Clearly, fennel oil exhibited the greatest effect in stimulated kidney function to detox the body toxins through increased secretion of urine compared to other experimental groups.
The results of this study clearly indicate that fennel powder, extract and oil are potent antioxidants that ameliorate the levels of gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats.
Interestingly, in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) treated with either water extract of Marrubium vulgare L. or Foeniculum vulgare L. in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY), researchers showed that application of fennel water extract reduces hypertension through Foeniculum increased water, sodium, and potassium excretion in compared to no effect of Marrubium treated group.
Additionally, in comparison to Marrubium extract reduced hypertension through inhibited contractile responses, fennel restored the normal; blood pressure by increased urine secretion and ameliorated the overexpression of ROS and increased antioxidant status in the host.
Surely, one can say that Foeniculum acts mainly as a diuretic and a natriuretic while Marrubium displays vascular relaxant activity.
Taken together, fennel and its extracts may be considered as a kidney detoxed functional food in getting rid of body toxins through its diuretic activities.

Bromelain, Processes Cytotoxic Property Against Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Peritoneal mesothelioma is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the abdomen (the peritoneum).
Most cases of peritoneal mesothelioma begin in the cell in the surface of the inner lining of the peritoneum, before penetrating into the deeper layers.
At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, patients with peritoneal mesothelioma are asymptomatic.
However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of abdominal pain or swelling due to the larger size tumor has pressed on the nearby nerves tissues and blood vessels, changes in bowel habits, feeling of fullness, and night sweat accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, such as unexplained weight loss, gastrointestinal discomforts, and loss of appetite.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, compared to other types of cancer mesothelioma is rare, with approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma in the US each year. The asbestos-related mesothelioma only accounts for less than 0.3 percent of all cancer diagnosed in the country.
Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for less than 20 percent of all mesothelioma cases.
Dr. Rodolfo Fonte, the lead scientist in the examination of the risk of asbestos-induced peritoneal mesothelioma in a construction worker, wrote, "Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive asbestos-related malignancy. We present the case of a 65-year-old man who developed recurrent ascites after having been exposed to asbestos in the building industry for > 40 years".
And, "Occupational history and immunohistochemistry are helpful for the correct diagnosis, which, in turn, is important in relation to prognosis and treatment (adoption of new integrated procedures that seem to promise prolonged survival and increased quality of life), and in relation to medico-legal issues and occupation-related compensation claims following asbestos exposure".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma, researchers examined the effects of Bromelain (cysteine proteinase) effects on Mucin 1 (MUC1), a glycosylation-dependent protein that confers tumors with invasiveness, metastasis, and chemoresistance.
In the study in which researchers compared the efficacy with the application of various concentrations of bromelain and after 4 and 72 h and combinations of bromelain and cytotoxic drugs (cisplatin or 5-FU) at 72 h, MUC1-expressing MPM cell lines found that bromelain increased the cytotoxicity of cisplatin significantly in cell lines.
Compared to the aforementioned inhibition, combining fluorouracil with bromelain did not show a significant increase in cytotoxicity.
In other words, bromelain improves the chemotherapy depending totally on the types of drugs used for the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma.
Furthermore, bromelain used alone also showed a significant effect in inducing cell death by apoptosis and autophagy.
On pancreatic and breast cancer cells, injection of bromelain also adversely affected the viability of MUC1 expressing on both cell lines.
Based on the findings, Bromelain used alone or combined with other chemo drugs might have a strong effect on the barrier function of MUC1.
Collectively, bromelain inhibited the progression and proliferation of peritoneal mesothelioma by blocking the activity of the gene MUC1.
Dr. Pillai K, the lead scientist said, " current evidence indicates that bromelain may have the potential of being developed into an effective anticancer agent for MPM".
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry Protects the Skin Against Allergic Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is a skin condition with symptoms of a red, itchy rash caused by direct contact with a substance or an immune overreaction against contact allergens.
Many chemicals and nonchemicals substances have been found to induce such abnormal reactions, including cosmetics, fragrances, jewelry, and plants.
Most cases of contact dermatitis are nonlife-threatening, however, the condition can induce certain discomforts, particularly in people with an allergic reaction to other conditions.
Contact dermatitis can be healed within a week or 2. The condition can be preventable if the cause is identified.
Besides the common symptoms of a red, itchy rash on the skin, some people may experience more serious symptoms including crusting swelling, burning, or tender skin.
Dr. Imbesi S, the lead scientist in the explanation of the immune involvement of the allergic contact dermatitis wrote, " an inflammatory skin condition due to pro-inflammatory and toxic factors able to activate the skin innate immunity (irritant contact dermatitis) or caused by a T-cell- mediated hypersensitivity reaction (allergic contact dermatitis)".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of chronic allergic contact dermatitis with no side effects, researchers examined the bilberry extract (Bilberon-25) in the alleviation of pruritus in a mouse model of chronic allergic contact dermatitis.
The study involved BALB/c mice with chronic allergic contact dermatitis induced by 3 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) following by the administration of Bilberon-25 orally for 3 weeks after sensitization with TNCB.
During the experiment, administered Bilberon-25 orally significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increase in scratching behavior, compared to that of dexamethasone.
Both Bilberon-25 and dexamethasone inhibited the ear swelling.
Additional differentiation of the Bilberon-25 efficacy, the action of the herbal remedy inhibited symptoms of chronic allergic contact dermatitis by alleviating T helper cell type 2 (Th2) predominance of the lesional skin.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "Anthocyanins from bilberry might be beneficial for the treatment of chronic pruritus which can occur in patients with inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis".
In order to reveal more information about anthocyanin activity against chronic allergic contact dermatitis, researchers at the Chiba Univ compared the anti-pruritic effect of anthocyanin-rich quality-controlled bilberry extract and anthocyanidin-rich degraded extract in a mouse model of allergic contact dermatitis.
Once again, BALB/c mice with allergic contact dermatitis induced by 4 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) following by administration of Bilberon-25 orally for 4 weeks.
Compared with nonheated Bilberon-25, the proportion of anthocyanins in heated Bilberon-25 decreased, and the proportion of anthocyanidins was increased in a heated-time-dependent manner.
Treatment with non-heated Bilberon-25 significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increased scratching behavior, whereas treatment with 2 h-heated Bilberon-25 did not.
Particularly, 300 μg/mL nonheated Bilberon-25 showed significant inhibition of degranulation in RBL-2H3 mast cells.
The results suggested that the anthocyanin-rich but not anthocyanidin-rich bilberry extract inhibited the skin diseases involving pruritic symptoms, such as chronic allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and rhinitis.
Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of symptoms in patients with chronic allergic contact dermatitis, pending the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
