Herbal Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) Improves the Bone Marrow Cells Against the Risk of Leukemia

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone. including spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream in the other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, Acute leukemia can also be classified into
* Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the abnormal growth of extremely immature lymphocytes overproduced by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. The condition has a tendency to multiply quickly, leading to the death of normal white blood cells in the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system.

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

* Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a cancer of myelogenous lining caused by the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal blood cells. In AML, granulocytes appear immature in the bloodstream.

According to the statistic proved by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 21,450 new cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) will be diagnosed in adults. The disease also causes the
of 10,920 deaths of American adults.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of bone marrow cell integrity, researchers examined the protective effect of polysaccharides from Tussilago farfara L. on bone marrow cells.

According to the tested analysis, Tussilago farfara L. protected the bone marrow cells against the side effects of polychemotherapy-induced apoptosis.

Furthermore, polychemotherapy-induced DNA damage in bone marrow cells was also reversed by the application of polysaccharides from Tussilago farfara L.

In vivo, small intestinal epithelium of C57Bl/6 mice, polysaccharides from Tussilago farfara L.also induced genoprotective properties against the chemo side effects.

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the protection of bone marrow cell integrity against the onset of leukemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Inhibits The Expression of Advanced Glycation (AD) Expression

Advanced glycation end is a by produces formed by protein or fat combine with sugar caused by cooking meat at high temperature.

The products have been found to affect metabolic health.

The most common causes of AGEs are from the diet, particularly in people who follow the Western diet with high saturated and trans fat, a lot of red meats, and processed foods.

Low levels of AGEs may not be a problem, however, overexpression of AGEs can induce oxidative stress, leading to inflammation and damage proteins, lipid, and sometimes alternation of cells DNA.

In other words, AGEs initiates the production and free radicals and free radical a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons in the outer ring paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Accelerated formation and accumulation of advanced glycation end-products have been found to increased hyperglycemia or oxidative stress, leading to age-related and chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoarthritis, and also non-diabetic atherosclerosis, and chronic heart failure.

Some researchers suggested that modern life byproducts of AGEs are the results of the promotion of the processed food diet.

Dr. Chetan Sharma, Amarjeet Kaur, the lead scientist in the assessment of AGEs, wrote, "As modern diets are largely heat-processed, they are more prone to contain high levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs)".

And, "The chemistry of the AGEs formation, absorption and bioavailability and their patho-biochemistry particularly in relation to different complications like diabetes and aging,... The emerging evidence about the adverse effects of AGEs makes it necessary to investigate the different therapies to inhibit AGEs".

The results strongly suggested the link of the modern diet with highly processed food is a leading cause of chronic diseases.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of oxidative stress, researchers examined anti-glycation effects of several polyphenol-rich fruits, including blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, red raspberry, and strawberry extracts, which are rich in anthocyanins.

Berry crude extracts (CE) yielded anthocyanins-enriched (ACE) extracts used in the study, showed a significant effect against oxidative stress by exhibiting the free radical scavenging, reactive carbonyl species trapping, and anti-glycation effects compared to their respective ACFs.

Furthermore, the berry ACEs (at 100 μg/mL) inhibited both thermal- and MGO-induced Aβ fibrillation induced by the overexpression of glycation.

Moreover, the berry ACEs (at 20 μg/mL) also reduced H₂O₂-induced reactive oxygen species production and lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide species in BV-2 microglia by decreasing H₂O₂-induced neuron cytotoxicity and caspase-3/7 activity in BV-2 microglia involved in inflammation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The free radical scavenging, reactive carbonyl trapping, anti-glycation, anti-Aβ fibrillation, and microglial neuroprotective effects of these berry extracts warrant further in vivo studies to evaluate their potential neuroprotective effects against AD".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment of AD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Improves Symptoms of Neuro-Psychology

Neuropsychological assessment provides both general and specific information about current levels of cognitive performance. An average or composite score across multiple ability areas provides an overall index of how well a person functions cognitively at the current time.

Cognition is the process of the brain functioning associated with the attention of working memory, producing and comprehending language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision making.

Cognitive deficit is a medical condition, that affects a person's thinking, communication, understanding, or memory. The cognitive deficit can be acute or chronic.

Acute cognitive deficit is a short-term health problem caused by drug toxicity and withdrawal, electrolyte disturbance, lack of drugs, liver disease, infection, reduced sensor input, intracranial urinary retention/fecal impaction, or myocardial/metabolic/pulmonary. An acute cognitive deficit may be recovered if the cause is found.

Chronic cognitive deficit is a permanent medical condition caused by the gradual or permanent loss of the neurons, leading to problems of language, ideomotor and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, spatial attention, learning abilities, and executive functions.

There is no single cause of the chronic cognitive deficit. An increase in age, genetic preposition, certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, being obese, and lack of exercise are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic cognitive deficit.

Some researchers suggested that depending on the locations of the brain that were affected, patients may be at risk of Alzheimer's disease such as brain change caused by the abnormal clumps of beta-amyloid protein (plaques).

Small strokes or reduced blood flow through the brain can also cause a chronic cognitive deficit.

According to the observation of the patient MRI, patients brain with cognitive impairment also showed shrinkage of the hippocampus, a brain region important for memory, enlargement of the brain's fluid-filled spaces (ventricles), and reduced use of glucose, the sugar that's the primary source of energy for cells.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the condition, obesity is also one of the major risk factors of cognitive impairment in the Western world.

Dr. Jason C. D. Nguyen, the lead author on the neurological team wrote in the final report, "The incidence of obesity in middle age is increasing markedly, and in parallel, the prevalence of metabolic disorders including cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes is also rising. Numerous studies have demonstrated that both obesity and metabolic disorders are associated with poorer cognitive performance, cognitive decline, and dementia".

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the cranberry extract (CE) neuropsychologic effect.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel-group, clinical trial included 50 community-dwelling, cognitively intact volunteers, > or = 60 years old, who reported no history of dementia or significant neurocognitive impairments.

Participants in the study were randomly assigned to receive either 32 ounces/day of a beverage containing 27% cranberry juice per volume (n = 25) or placebo (n = 25) for 6 weeks.

According to the neuropsychologic tests before and after treatment on participants' self-reported, there was a nonsignificant trend (X2(1) = 2.373, p = 0.123) on overall abilities to remember.

However, more than twice of many participants (37.5%) reported the overall abilities to remember at the end of treatment compared to placebo controls (17.4%).

In other words, cranberry extract (CE) although can not improve overall neuropsychologic symptoms, it enhances the short-term memory of dementia or significant neurocognitive impairments.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of memory, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry, the Best in Hyperglycemia Management Against Diabetics Complications

Diabetes is a medical and chronic disease characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

The disease is either caused by cells in the pancreas that died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol, such as type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of type 1 diabetes are associated with a gene mutation that causes the immune to attack the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

Acquired diabetes in most cases is caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices, including a high-fat diet and physical inactivity.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 23.1 million people in the United States are living with diagnosed diabetes, costing the healthcare system more than $245 billion per year.

Sadly, there is an estimation that another 7.2 million people have diabetes but remain undiagnosed, accompanied by another 84.1 million adults 18 years and older with prediabetes.

Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes is a condition of abnormally high blood glucose in the blood.

Most cases of hyperglycemia are a result of poor management of blood glucose including uncontrolled diet, physical inactivity, miss-medication, and improper use of insulin injection.

Uncontrolled diabetes or hyperglycemia over the long term can lead to diabetic complications, including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, depression, pain, polypharmacy, and functional disability.

Long-term elevated glucose values above 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 10 to 11 millimoles per liter (mmol/L) have been found to induce symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, fatigue, and headache.

In severe cases, some patients may also experience life-threatening complications such as fruity-smelling breath, shortness of breath, weakness, confusion, and coma.

Dr in the study of hyperglycemia in the aging population wrote, "Higher levels of Sirt1 and PGC-1α and increased expression of gluconeogenesis pathway genes are found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice. Increased Sirt6 abundance is found in the hyperglycemic NOD mice, which might increase DNA damage repair".

And, "With aging, lower Sirt1 abundance and activity, increased acetylated histone modifications and Sirt7 levels, and NOR methylation is found. Thus, whereas in normal aging cell metabolism is reduced, in the diabetic mice a compensatory mechanism may elevate Sirt1 and Sirt6 levels, increasing gluconeogenesis and DNA repair from the oxidative damage caused by hyperglycemia".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diabetes complications, researchers examined the effect of aqueous solutions of two different cranberry powders (CP and CP-SAB) on hyperglycemia.

In vitro, in vitro CP and CP-SAB administration showed a significant inhibition of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) associated with the management of hyperglycemia linked to type 2 diabetes.

Low levels of α-amylase have been found in patients with diabetes.

α-glucosidase is associated with the digestion of carbohydrates is elevated in patients with diabetes

According to the chemical analysis, the efficacy of CP and CP-SAB that inhibits hyperglycemia was probably attributed to the chemical constituents p-Coumaric acid and quercetin derivatives, the main phenolic compounds identified in the cranberry powders.

Furthermore, increased with increased dose (1-5 mg/mL) of CP-SAB exerted the increased α-glucosidase inhibitory activity from 60% to 100%.

At 5 mg/mL, CP-SAB exerted a maximum of 40% inhibition against α-amylase.

Levels of ACE were also significantly inhibited by CP-SAB at the concentration of 100 and 200 mg/mL sample concentrations.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These in vitro results indicate the potential of cranberry powders as a dietary supplement and food-based strategies for potential hyperglycemia management".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the management of hyperglycemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, the Antioxidants

Antioxidants are stable molecules that play an essential role in the inhibition of oxidation caused by free radicals.

Free radicals are unstable and highly reactive molecules with a single electron in the outermost ring. Therefore, in order to maintain stability, free radicals either donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules, leading to a chain of reaction that can not be stopped until all single electron in the outermost ring is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Overexpression of free radicals and reduced production of antioxidant enzymes by the body induce oxidative stress. Over time, oxidative stress can cause protein, lipid, and cell damage, leading to chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

There are 2 types of antioxidants. antioxidants enzymes produced by the liver and the dietary sources, including
* Antioxidant enzymes from dietary protein and minerals, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalases.

* Antioxidant vitamins found in supplements or daily intake of food. such as vitamins A, C, E, folic acid, and beta-carotene. Most antioxidant vitamins process a free radical scavenging activity.

In other words, they gobble up free radicals before they can cause a chain of reaction.

* Antioxidant phytochemicals found mostly in the plant second metabolites including fruits and vegetables, carotenoids, flavonoids, allyl sulfides, and polyphenols.

Believe it or not, in a healthy individual, antioxidants produced by the liver are more than enough to balance the production of free radicals. However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of antioxidants from dietary sources and supplements may be necessary.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of disease associated with oxidative stress, researchers evaluated the ameliorative efficacy of bacoside A and bromelain on oxidative stress biomarkers in serum of dichlorvos intoxicated mice.

The experiment included mice were allocated into six groups. The first group received saline as a vehicle; the second group was administered with dichlorvos (40 mg/kg b.w.); the third group was administered with bromelain (70 mg/kg b.w.), the fourth group received a dose of bacoside A (5 mg/kg b.w.), the fifth group was given concomitant exposure of bacoside A and bromelain both and mice of the sixth group were exposed to bacoside A, bromelain and dichlorvos for 21 days consecutively.

Group treated with dichlorvos showed a significant increase of oxidative stress biomarkers thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and protein carbonyl content (PCC).

The results suggested that dichlorvos stimulates the production of free radicals in mice.

Bromelain and dichlorvos treated group showed a strong effect in the inhibition of the free radical expression induced by dichlorvos.

Furthermore, co-administration of bromelain and bacoside A in dichlorvos exposed mice also displayed a significant effect in reversing the level of CAT, SOD, GPx, and GSH (p < 0.05) which was decreased due to the dichlorvos administration.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Finding of research conclude that concomitant exposure of bacoside A and bromelain was much effective in combating oxidative stress induced by dichlorvos".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica May Reduce the Mortality Rate in Patients with Sepsis

Sepsis is a condition caused by chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight the infection that triggers inflammation throughout the body as a result of severe infection(a)(b). according to the study by the University of Utah, sepsis is the commonest cause of admission to medical ICUs across the world.

Mortality from sepsis continues to be high. Besides shock and multi-organ dysfunction occurring following the intense inflammatory reaction to sepsis, complications arising from sepsis-related immunoparalysis contribute to the morbidity and mortality from sepsis(c).

The most common risk factors associated with the prevalent factors of sepsis, term infants, while very low birth weight (VLBW) and preterm infants, obesity, operative vaginal delivery and age <25 years, elderly, patient in intensive care and with weakened immune system, invasive devices, and alcoholism.

Diseases associated with Sepsis are
* Staphylococcal infections
Preterm infants are especially susceptible to late-onset sepsis that is often due to Gram-positive bacterial infections resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality(24).

* Elevated central venous pressure
Elevated central venous pressure is associated with impairment of microcirculatory blood flow in sepsis(25).

* Neonatal cellulitis
There is a report of a case of late-onset neonatal invasive group A streptococcal disease characterized by rapidly progressing cellulitis and development of sepsis(26).

* Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
There is a report of the spectrum of community-acquired S. aureus infections and to compare the patients infected with methicillin-susceptible or methicillin-resistant strains among patients aged <20 years. Overall, 90 cases of community-acquired S. aureus were detected in an 11-year period(27).

* Bladder infection
Bladder bacteria is a common but unique cause of sepsis(28).

* Urinary tract infection
In the study to evaluate the effectiveness of Lactobacillus GG supplementation in reducing the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs), bacterial sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants, found that seven days of Lactobacillus GG supplementation starting with the first feed is not effective in reducing the incidence of UTIs, NEC, and sepsis in preterm infants. Further studies are required to confirm our results in lower birth weight populations(29).

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the effects of Xuebijing injection (XBJ), a Chinese patent medicine on sepsis.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the search of medical literature in Embase, PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and the Wanfang database from inception to June 6, 2017, including relevant RCTs comparing XBJ combined with RT and RT alone for sepsis, * 1602 records and 16 RCTs (1144 patients) identified suggested that the combined therapy reduced 28-day mortality and body temperature.

* WBC count improved with combined medication at high dosages (one study included, 40/1144, MD -8.00, 95% CI -10.18 to -5.82) with no reduction at moderate dosages.

* However, moderate-quality evidence indicated positive results with low dosages.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This study suggested that supplementation with XBJ in addition to regular treatment may improve the 28-day mortality rate, APACHE Ⅱ scores, WBC count, and body temperature of sepsis patients without serious adverse events".

Taken altogether, angelica used combined with other herbal medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of sepsis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Sinensis Protects the liver Against Toxicity

The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body and the only organ which can regenerate itself. The liver is the first line of the bodily toxin defense by filtering the blood that comes from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building strong cell membranes, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals, and metabolizing drugs.

The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is an action that maintains the liver's healthy functioning against any harmful toxins, including detoxification which is a natural process of our body to maintain the proper function and protect our organs and tissues against toxicity by eliminating toxins accumulated.

When they fail, the toxic accumulations cause a disruption of hormone production, damage the body's detoxification organs and weaken the immune system, leading to hormone imbalance and much chronic illness consequently.

Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, and pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.

There are no exact causes of liver disease. viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic liver disease, including cancer.

In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.

Furthermore, in recent years, excessive alcohol drinking has been found to induce alcoholic liver disease in many parts of Asia and America.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, scientists examined the hepatoprotective effects of polysaccharides-enriched fractions from the root of Angelica sinensis in rodents.

Angelica or Dang Gui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

According to tested analysis,
* Intra-gastric administration of Angelica sinensis polysaccharides-enriched fraction (AP) at the doses of 50 or 75 mg/kg dose-dependently prevented liver toxicity induced by acetaminophen in mice but did not affect the serum acetaminophen concentration.
* AP inhibited the liver stress markers alanine transferase (ALT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and hepatic nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activities, and glutathione level in the liver.

* In the carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver damage animals, AP showed weak protective activity.

* However, a higher dose of AP inhibited the MDA level without affecting the serum ALT level, the hepatic glutathione level instead while the NOS activity in CCl4 induced liver damage in rats.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "These findings suggest that the pathogenic mechanisms of both acetaminophen and CCl4 are different. AP is more effective in the protection against liver damage induced by acetaminophen, which is associated with the glutathione depletion and nitric oxide synthase activation in the liver".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the protection against liver damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
