Burdock is plants in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro. It has been used over a thousand of years in Chins and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.
The antitussive effect is considered as a coughing suppression activity with the use as substance, including herb, medication
The ingredients
It contains carbonated water, sugar,, manloid colourings, phosphoric acid, citric acid and a good amount of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and amino acids and chemical compounds of guaianolide, arctinone, arctinal, methyl arctate,11-tridecadien-3,5,7,9-tetraynde-hydrocostus lactone, dehydrodihydrocostus lactone, 3-octenoic acid, 3-hexenoic acid, etc.
The benefits
polysaccharides found in Burdock may be the potential agent to treat a pathological type of cough as its polysaccharides exhibited statistically significant cough-suppressing activity, which was noticeably higher than that of the non-narcotic drug used in clinical practice to treat coughing. Also A biologically active fructan from the roots of Arctium lappa L., var. Herkules is was found to be equally active as some non-narcotic, synthetic preparations used in clinical practice to treat coughing.
The Side effects
1. Overdose can be poisoning and may lead to symptoms of acute poisoning include phenothiazines, tricyclic antidepressants, and antihistamines.
2. It may cause dermatitis and allergic/inflammatory responses to certain people with contact as a result of lactones that the plant produces.
3. Do not use burdock if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
4. Etc.

Herbal Bilberry Normalizes the Blood Glucose in Diabetics
Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormally high blood glucose associated with the elevated risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
In other words, overexpression of blood cholesterol is one the condition of metabolic syndrome cluster involved diabetic complications.
Long-term untreated and unmanaged hyperglycemia was found to induce kidney damage or kidney failure in diabetes.
Some researchers suggested that long-term untreated and unmanaged hyperglycemia was associated with severe damage to the blood vessels of the retina, potentially leading to blindness and wounds such as on the leg that can not be healed.
On the other hand, hypoglycemia is a condition caused by abnormally low levels of blood glucose. Most cases of acute hypoglycemia in healthy individuals is a result of hunger due to the miss of the meal.
In diabetes, the condition may be caused by overdoses of insulin injection or medications. In some cases, hypoglycemia may be caused by a diabetic person who doesn't eat as much food as usual after taking diabetes medication.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include dizziness, nausea, cold sweats, a fast heart rate, confusion, headache, irritability, coma, and possibly even death, depending on the levels of blood glucose.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Searching in a list of natural ingredients for the treatment of hyperglycemia, scientists investigated the bilberry's polyphenolic compounds on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in Wistar rats with streptozotocin (STZ) and high-fructose diet (HFD)-induced diabetes.
In the comparison of the Vaccinium myrtillus L. (bilberry) leaf (VLE) and Phaseolus vulgaris L. seed coat (PCE) plant extracts effects on hypoglycemic properties, male Wistar rats with STZ and HFD-induced diabetes selected to the study were fed with or without VLE or PCE for 50 d.
According to the blood sample collected, the injection of VLE showed a significantly ameliorative effect on carbohydrate metabolism in diabetic rats.
Furthermore, the administration of VLE in diabetic animals normalized the HbA levels in 4 out of 8 treatment rats.
Moreover, the VLE treatment group also displayed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels by 50% compared with the control of diabetic rats.
Compared to the PLE treatment group, VLE and PLE groups showed an antioxidant effect on diene compounds in the blood serum of rats.
The findings suggested that VLE exerts potential anti hypoglycemia probably through enhancing the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host rats.
In order to find more information about bilberry antihyperglycemic activity and confirm the use of bilberry traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes, researchers investigate the effects of bilberry against DM.
Selected animals in the study induced diabetes by the intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (120 mg kg(-1) body weight (BW))were treated by Bilberry powder (2 g d(-1)) or glibenclamide (positive control; 0.6 mg kg(-1) BW) for 4 weeks following alloxan injection.
Bilberry supplementation injection resulted in a significant reduction of glucose compared to diabetic control and glibenclamide.
Additionally, bilberry demonstrated strong activity against symptoms of diabetes by elevating the levels of insulin, reducing TC, LDL-C, VLDL-C and TG levels, and preventing the decline of HDL-C.
However, the levels of CRP in the expression of inflammation did not significantly change with either bilberry or glibenclamide.
Dr. the lead scientist said, "Dietary supplementation with bilberry fruits may protect against impaired glucose and lipid metabolism in DM".
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional food for the treatment of hyperglycemia and hyperglycemic complications of diabetes, pending to the further confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Protects the Cell DNA Against Genotoxicity
Genotoxicity is a process of destruction on a cell's genetic material (DNA, RNA), leading to gene mutation.
In other words, genotoxins are mutagens, the substances which have been found to induce cancer. The most common genotoxins are radiation and toxic chemicals.
Believe it or not, besides causing cancer, genotoxins are found to induce various types of genetic diseases, by the damage of the germ cell.
Some researchers suggested that the damage of DNA may be controlled if the genotoxins are identified through the use of anti antimutagens /anti-clastogens that suppress or inhibit the mutagenesis process.
The most common causes of genetic damage or alternation are reactive oxygen species (ROS), the unstable and genotoxic molecules that exist everywhere in the environment and inside the human body.
By regulating the levels of free radicals in the body through the increased antioxidant enzyme inside the host or from the dietary sources, oxidative stress induced by ROS may be controlled. Thereby, reducing the risk of gene damage.
Dr. Mohamed SAKS, the lead scientist wrote in the article published in the Global Journal of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, "There are mainly two mechanisms of anti-mutagenesis:
a. Desmutagenesis in which the factors on the mutagens are somehow inactivated,
b. Bio-antimutagenesis, in which the factors act on the process of mutagenesis or by repairing the damaged DNA that results in the decreased frequency of DNA mutation [15]. a number of cells have a DNA repair system by which they try to control the DNA mutations naturally".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a potential treatment cancer, researchers examined the genotoxic effect of
pineapple extract on oral cancer cell line by DNA fragmentation.
According to the DNA fragmentation assay, bromelain showed a significantly genotoxic activity by invading the cancer nucleus and causes damage to the nucleic acid.
In the examine 3 different doses of bromelain incubated with oral cancer cells, DNA fragmentation occurred in all three concentrations.
In other words, bromelain inhibited oral cancer cell progression through genotoxic properties.
Furthermore, bromelain also inhibited the expression of MUC1, a glycoprotein associated with tumor cells invasive, metastatic, and chemo-resistant properties in breast and pancreatic cancer cells.
Moreover, bromelain used a combination with either cisplatin and 5-FU also enhanced conventional medicine efficacy.
Additionally, in malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) expressed MUC1, the administration of bromelain also affected the viability of MPM cells adversely.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer through its genotoxic activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Burdock, the Natural Antibiotic Alternative
Scientists may have found a herbal plant for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection with no side effects, according to studies.
Infection is a result of the invasion of microorganisms that have successfully multiplied in the host body and the reaction of host tissues.
Bacteria is a single cell microorganism. Most bacterias are not harmful, some may also benefit the digestive system. However, 1% of invasive bacteria can make us sick and damage the body tissue, such as bacteria associated with tuberculosis.
There are many ways to cause infection including bacteria passed from person to person, transmitted by bites from insects or animals. and ingesting contaminated food or water.
The most common symptoms of infectious diseases are fever, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle aches, coughing, depending on the specific area of infection.
The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.
Most bacteria are killed in the first phase of acute infection. In this phase, the immune white blood cells in the first line of defense in responding to the body tissue damage or injury by stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines to kill off all invasive pathogens on the site of damage.
However, overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in most cases can destroy the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars as seen in liver infection.
What contributes to the overexpression proinflammatory and underexpression of anti-inflammatory cytokines of the body in the initiation of chronic inflammatory diseases?
Dr. Thomas W. McDade and colleagues in the investigation of the role of proinflammatory cytokines in the risk of infection explained, "the metabolic syndrome may be characterized by dysregulated inflammation, in which an important anti-inflammatory signal is absent. Similarly, in a prospective study of patients with acute coronary syndromes, baseline IL-10 concentration was a significant predictor of death or myocardial infarction during 6 months of follow up, ......high IL-10 experienced an adverse outcome, compared to 21.8% of patients with high CRP but low IL-10
Burdock is a plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.
The plant has been used thousands of years in China medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.
With an aim to the discovery of natural bio components from plants with antibacterial activity on endodontic microbiota for the new therapies, researchers evaluated the antibacterial activity of a phytotherapeutic agent prepared from an ethyl acetate fraction (AcOEt) extracted from Arctium lappa.
A total of 27 maxillary canines with a mixed bacterial suspension of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus mutans a Candida albicans were included in the study.
The teeth were divided into three groups and their canals filled with: group 1, calcium hydroxide and propylene glycol; group 2, a paste containing AcOEt fraction of A. lappa (Burdock) and propylene glycol; group 3, propylene glycol (control).
At 7, 14 and 30 days, three teeth from each group opened, researchers found that mild bacterial growth was found in group 1 at all time intervals; in group 2 there was severe growth at 7 days, but no growth at 14 and 30 days.
These results indicated a significant antibacterial effect of AcOEt fraction of A. lappa in inhibiting the growth of all the microorganisms.
Furthermore, in vitro, the antimicrobial activity of rough extracts from leaves of Arctium lappa showed inhibition of Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans selectively to specific target microorganisms.
In other words, each constituent in the extract of Burdock inhibited only a certain type of endodontic pathogens without affecting others.
Dr.Pereira JV, the lead author said, "the Arctium lappa constituents exhibited a great microbial inhibition potential against the tested endodontic pathogens".
More importantly, in the review of the antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeasts of extracts of 13 Brazilian medicinal plants, researchers found that only 10 plant extracts showed varied levels of antibacterial activity.
Arctium lappa exerted some degree of antibacterial activity compared to other plants, including Mikania glomerata, Sambucus canadensis, Plantago major and Erythrina species.
Burdock was one of 5 plants belonging to the Asteraceae family that demonstrated the Rf values similar to the antibacterial compounds visible on bioautogram.
The finding strongly suggested Burdock and other 4 plants in the Asteraceae family may be used for the treatment of various infectious diseases.
Taken altogether, herbal Burdock may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with other primary medicine for the treatment of infectious diseases.

Herbal Ashwagandha Gobbles Up Human Head and Neck Cancer Cells In Vitro
Cancer is a group of diseases associated with cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of a specific organ. Over time cancer can become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues.
Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface in the inner lining tissue of a specific organ, before traveling a distance away to affect other nearby tissue and organ.
Head and neck cancer is a class of cancer including the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.
Most cases of head and neck cancer start in the cell of the inner lining of the affected tissue. Patients with head and neck cancer at the very early stage are asymptomatic due to the very small size of the tumor.
However, at the later stage, the cancer cell can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
The exact causes of head and neck cancer are not identified. However, researchers found that excessive alcohol intake, smoking, infected by the HPV virus, poor oral health, race, long-term exposure to wood dust are prevalent factors associated with an increased risk of head and neck cancer.
Dr. Kazuhiro Kobayashi in the investigation of the risk of HPV on head and neck cancer (HNC) wrote, " Infection with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of HNSCCs. It is now widely accepted that high-risk HPV is a cause of almost all cervical cancers as well as some forms of HNSCCs. HPV-related HNSCCs are increasing".
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancers, researchers examined the apoptotic activity of methanol extract of Ashwagandha (MEAG) and in human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cells.
In vitro, in human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cells treated by MEAG showed dose-dependent growth-inhibitory activity involved in caspase-dependent apoptosis.
The inhibition of human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) was attributed to induce the loss of mitochondrial membrane, the release of cytochrome c, accompanied by the activation of caspase 9 the apoptotic pathway.
Furthermore, Bim, truncated Bid (t-Bid), cleaved caspase-8, and death receptor 5 (DR5), associated with pro-apoptotic activity was also a significant increase upon the injection of MEAG.
Moreover, the major constituent withaferin A (WA), a bioactive component of MEAG.also expressed similar effects to those of MEAG.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " MEAG and WA may be potential natural materials for the treatment of HNSCC.".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Bilberry, the Natural Treatment of Chronic Pruritus
Pruritus is a severe itching of the skin, as a symptom of various ailments. It is a frequent complaint heard by dermatologists and primary care physicians.
According to the statistics provided by Dr. Elke Weisshaar and Dr. Uwe Matterne, in children, pruritus is a cardinal symptom of atopic eczema (atopic dermatitis)associated with the prevalent risk between 6.1% and 22.3% in the Western countries.
There are many causes associated with the itching skin including aging that worsened dry skin condition, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, scabies, burns, scars, insect bites, and hives.and diseases associated with the liver and kidney
Most symptoms of pruritus are due to scratching, including skin redness, bumps, crack, and scaly skin, depending on the causes of the symptoms.
For some instances, an allergic reaction can induce pruritus involved in touching clothing, pets, chemicals, soaps, and cosmetics and foods caused by an overreaction of the immune system in the production of cytokines against allergens.
Some researchers suggested that some people may experience an itching feeling with no physical cause. And patients with depression anxiety obsessive-compulsive disorder have been found to have an urge to scratch.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of pruritus, researchers at the Chiba Univ examined the bilberry anthocyanins' antipruritic effect in a mouse model of allergic contact dermatitis by comparing anthocyanin-rich quality-controlled bilberry extract and anthocyanidin-rich degraded extract.
The study included BALB/c mice with allergic contact dermatitis induced by 4 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) were administered Bilberon-25 orally for 4 weeks after sensitization with TNCB.
Treatment with non-heated Bilberon-25 significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increased scratching behavior, whereas treatment with 2 h-heated Bilberon-25 did not.
300 μg/mL nonheated Bilberon-25 showed significant inhibition of degranulation in RBL-2H3 mast cells, whereas 2 h-heated Bilberon-25 had no effect at any concentration.
Further differentiation of the results, researchers found that the efficacy of nonheated Bilberon-25 was attributed to the inhibitory effect of bilberry anthocyanins on pruritus mediated, at least in part, on mast cell degranulation.
More precisely, Dr. Yamaura K, the lead scientist said, "the anthocyanin-rich but not anthocyanidin-rich bilberry extract may be a useful dietary supplement for skin diseases involving pruritic symptoms, such as chronic allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and rhinitis".
Furthermore, in a mouse model induced chronic allergic contact dermatitic researchers once again examined the bilberry extract (Bilberon-25) in the alleviation of pruritus.
The study included BALB/c mice with chronic allergic contact dermatitis induced by 3 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) were administered Bilberon-25 orally for 3 weeks after sensitization with TNCB.
During the study, treatment with Bilberon-25 significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increased scratching behavior, but dexamethasone did not.
Both dexamethasone and Bilberon-25 showed a significant amelioration of ear swelling.
Base on these results, researchers wrote in the final report, "Anthocyanins from bilberry might be beneficial for the treatment of chronic pruritus which can occur in patients with inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis".
Taken altogether, bilberry processed a high amount of anthocyanins may be considered a functional food for the treatment of chronic pruritus with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Protects the Cardiac Muscle in Blood Circulation
Cardiac muscle or heart muscle or myocardium is a type of muscle that helps the heart to pump blood to nourish the entire body by performing the coordinated contractions.
Damage of heart muscle can lead to cardiomyopathy, or heart muscle disease, leading to abnormally heart enlarged, thickened, and/or stiffened.
In other words, cardiomyopathy reduced the heart muscle ability to pump blood, causing heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or the rest of the body.
Most common types of cardiomyopathy are
* Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition caused by the enlarged and weakened the left ventricle.
* Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a result of the thickening of the heart muscle, at the septum between the ventricles, below the aortic valve.
* Ischemic cardiomyopathy is the condition caused by narrow arteries that affect the supply blood to the heart muscle.
* Restrictive cardiomyopathy is a condition that the walls of the lower chambers of the ventricles are too rigid to expand
Most common symptoms of cardiomyopathy are associated with reduce blood flow due to reduced function of heart muscle including general weakness and fatigue, shortness of breath, particularly during exertion or exercise, lightheadedness, and dizziness, chest pain, heart palpitations, fainting attacks, high blood pressure, edema, or swelling, of your feet, ankles, and legs.
If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of cardiomyopathy.
Out of many factors associated with the risk of cardiomyopathy, some researchers suggested that long-term alcoholism may be the major culprit.
Dr. B. Maisch wrote, " Moderate drinking can reduce the incidence and mortality of coronary artery disease, heart failure, diabetes, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke".
However, "More than this amount can lead to alcoholic cardiomyopathy, which is defined as alcohol toxicity to the heart muscle itself by ethanol and its metabolites".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the improvement of cardiovascular circulation, researchers examined the effect of bromelain on ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury is characterized by the production of oxygen-free radicals leading to disturbances in vasomotility (microvascular constriction) and microvascular permeability (interstitial edema formation).
The study included a rabbit hindlimb model of I/R (2.5/2 h) were given Phlogenzym, containing rutin, trypsin, and bromelain enterally (60 mg/kg body weight) 30 min prior to ischemia (Ph group).
Before treatment with Phlogenzym, two hours after reperfusion, potassium levels were significantly elevated in IR compared to the Ph group.
Application of Phlogenzym inhibited the enhanced lipid peroxidation, apparent by increased plasma malondialdehyde levels in the Ph group, particularly, in the reduction of blood flow.
Furthermore, Phlogenzym treatment also prevented microvascular constriction and mollified interstitial edema
In other words, Phlogenzym protects the cardiac muscle in blood circulation against damage caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Phlogenzym had a protective effect on skeletal muscle during I/R injury expressed by prevention of no-reflow and preservation of muscle tissue".
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the protection of heart muscle, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
