 Herbal Reishi Mushroom

Reishi mushroom or Lingzhi is a fungal species in the genus Ganoderma, belonging to the family Ganodermataceae, native to Asia. The herb has been use in traditional medicine as anti-caners and anti inflammatory, antioxdant agent and to enhance immune function, treat hepatitis B virus, protect against neuron degeneration, etc.

Health Benefits
1. Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC)
In the investigation of medicinal mushroom Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) as an attractive candidate for anti-IBC therapy, found that Reishi inhibits cell invasion and disrupts the cell spheroids that are characteristic of the IBC invasive pathology. Reishi decreases the expression of genes involved in cancer cell survival and proliferation (BCL-2, TERT, PDGFB), and invasion and metastasis (MMP-9), whereas it increases the expression of IL8. Reishi reduces BCL-2, BCL-XL, E-cadherin, eIF4G, p120-catenin, and c-Myc protein expression and gelatinase activity. These findings suggest that Reishi is an effective anti-IBC therapeutic, according to "Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) inhibits cancer cell growth and expression of key molecules in inflammatory breast cancer" by Martínez-Montemayor MM, Acevedo RR, Otero-Franqui E, Cubano LA, Dharmawardhane SF.(1)

2. Prostate cancer
In the assessment of the effects of Ganoderma lucidum on cell proliferation, cell cycle, and apoptosis in human prostate cancer cells PC-3, founf that found that Ganoderma lucidum induced apoptosis of PC-3 cells with a slight decrease in the expression of NF-kappaB-regulated Bcl-2 and Bcl-xl. However, the expression of proapoptotic Bax protein was markedly up-regulated, resulting in the enhancement of the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 and Bax/Bcl-xl. Thus, Ganoderma lucidum exerts its effect on cancer cells by multiple mechanisms and may have potential therapeutic use for the prevention and treatment of cancer, according to "Ganoderma lucidum inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis in human prostate cancer cells PC-3" by Jiang J, Slivova V, Valachovicova T, Harvey K, Sliva D.(2)

3. Vascular proliferative diseases
In the assessment of extract of Reishi polysaccharides (EORP) inhibited platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF)-stimulated HASMC proliferation and the mechanism involved, found that EORP interferes with the mitogenic activation of JNK, preventing entry of HASMCs into the cell cycle in vitro and reducing cell proliferation in the neointima and decreasing the neointimal area in vivo. Thus, EORP may represent a safe and effective novel approach to the prevention and treatment of vascular proliferative diseases, according to "Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides prevent platelet-derived growth factor-stimulated smooth muscle cell proliferation in vitro and neointimal hyperplasia in the endothelial-denuded artery in vivo" by Wang SH, Liang CJ, Weng YW, Chen YH, Hsu HY, Chien HF, Tsai JS, Tseng YC, Li CY, Chen YL.(3)

4. Lung cancer
In the analyzing the effects of recombinant LZ-8 protein (rLZ-8) on the proliferation of A549 human lung cancer cells, found that The treatment of A549 cells with rLZ-8 activated p53 and p21 expression, and both the G(1) arrest and the antigrowth effect were found to be p53 dependent. It was further demonstrated that rLZ-8 inhibited tumor growth in mice transplanted with Lewis lung carcinoma cells, according to "Ling Zhi-8 mediates p53-dependent growth arrest of lung cancer cells proliferation via the ribosomal protein S7-MDM2-p53 pathway" by Wu CT, Lin TY, Hsu HY, Sheu F, Ho CM, Chen EI.(4)

5. Immune system
In the demonstration of Ganoderma lucidum, a medicinal fungus is thought to possess and enhance a variety of human immune functions, found that Our current results of analyzing rLZ-8-mediated signal transduction in T cells might provide a potential application for rLZ-8 as a pharmacological immune-modulating agent, according to "Reishi immuno-modulation protein induces interleukin-2 expression via protein kinase-dependent signaling pathways within human T cells" by Hsu HY, Hua KF, Wu WC, Hsu J, Weng ST, Lin TL, Liu CY, Hseu RS, Huang CT.(5)

6. Anti inflammatory effects
In the investigation of the water-soluble, polysaccharide components of Reishi (designated as MAK) in murine colitis induced by trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid (TNBS), found that MAK-stimulated PMs produced GM-CSF in a dose-dependent manner. Intestinal inflammation by TNBS was improved by feeding with MAK. MLNs of mice treated with TNBS produced IFN-γ, which was inhibited by feeding with MAK. In contrast, MLNs of mice treated with TNBS inhibited GM-CSF production, which was induced by feeding with MAK and conculded that that the induction of GM-CSF by MAK may provide the anti-inflammatory effect, according to "The water-soluble extract from cultured medium of Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) mycelia (Designated as MAK) ameliorates murine colitis induced by trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid" by Hanaoka R, Ueno Y, Tanaka S, Nagai K, Onitake T, Yoshioka K, Chayama K.(6)

7. Type 2 diabetes
In the investigation of the inhibition of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) activity has been considered to be a promising therapy approach to treat type 2 diabetes, found that The type 2 diabetic mice treated orally by FYGL showed an obvious decrease in plasma glucose level compared with the diabetic controls without drug treatment, comparable with that of diabetic mice treated with metformin, a clinical drug. The toxicity of FYGL is very low. The results indicate that FYGL may serve as a drug candidate or a health-care food for diabetic therapy or protection, according to "A protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B activity inhibitor from the fruiting bodies of Ganoderma lucidum (Fr.) Karst and its hypoglycemic potency on streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetic mice" by Teng BS, Wang CD, Yang HJ, Wu JS, Zhang D, Zheng M, Fan ZH, Pan D, Zhou P.(7)

8. Anti aging
In the classification of tyhe the anti aging efects of ganodermasides C and D, found that Both of them significantly extended the replicative lifespan of the K6001 yeast strain, according to "Ganodermasides C and D, two new anti-aging ergosterols from spores of the medicinal mushroom Ganoderma lucidum" by Weng Y, Lu J, Xiang L, Matsuura A, Zhang Y, Huang Q, Qi J.(8)

9. Anti tumors
In the study of triterpenoids, polysaccharides, nucleosides, sterols, and alkaloids, among others from G. lucidum, and the examination of the potential role of G. lucidum polysaccharide (GLPS) in tumor therapy and the possible mechanisms involved, found that the anti-tumor activities of GLPS are mediated by its immunomodulatory, anti-angiogenic, and cytotoxic effects. GLPS affects immune cells and immune-related cells including B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, dendritic cells, macrophages, and natural killer cells. In addition, recent data also suggest that GLPS suppresses tumorigenesis or inhibits tumor growth through direct cytotoxic effect and anti-angiogenic actions, according to "Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides: immunomodulation and potential anti-tumor activities" by Xu Z, Chen X, Zhong Z, Chen L, Wang Y.(9)

10. Ovarian cancer
In the investigation of the effect of Ganoderma lucidum on epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC),
found that Ganoderma lucidum strongly decreased cell numbers in a dose-dependent manner. Ganoderma lucidum also inhibited colony formation, cell migration and spheroid formation. In particular, Ganoderma lucidum was effective in inhibiting cell growth in both chemosensitive and chemoresistant cells and the treatment with Ganoderma lucidum significantly enhanced the effect of cisplatin on EOC cells, according to "Ganoderma lucidum exerts anti-tumor effects on ovarian cancer cells and enhances their sensitivity to cisplatin" by Zhao S, Ye G, Fu G, Cheng JX, Yang BB, Peng C.(10)

11. Itching
In this study of the antipruritic effect of the methanol extract of Ganoderma lucidum (MEGL) in mice, found that MEGL is effective against pruritus mediated by proteinases and 5-HT and that primary afferents expressing PAR(2) and 5-HT(2A) receptors are the sites of its action, according to "Inhibitory effect of methanol extract of Ganoderma lucidum on acute itch-associated responses in mice" by Zhang Q, Andoh T, Konno M, Lee JB, Hattori M, Kuraishi Y.(11)

12. Hemodynamic and antioxidation
In the investigate the effect of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides (GLPs) on hemodynamic and antioxidation in the T2DM rats, found that Both the middle dosage and the high dosage of GLPs could low blood glucose effectively, and they could reduce LVEP but increase -dp/dt(max). Meanwhile, they could activate GSH-Px, CAT, SOD, NO, but reduce MDA in cardiac tissue and improve the myocardial ultrastructure, according to "[Effect of Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides on hemodynamic and antioxidation in T2DM rats]. [Article in Chinese]" by Xue H, Qiao J, Meng G, Wu F, Luo J, Chen H, Zheng H, Xu J.(12)

Infertility is defined as inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse or can not carry the pregnancy to full term. It effects over 5 millions couple alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world, because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seeks help from professional specialist. In fact, More than 40% of infertility of a couple is caused by male inability to fertilize.

The yang or luteal phase (about 12 -14 days)

When the egg is extruded into fallopian tube, liver transform yin energy to yang that trigger the yang ( progesterone) phrase. At this phrase, blood and qi move down ward, the endometrial lining become softer to prepare the implantation of the fertilized egg, if occurs.
In conventional medicine, at this phase corpus luteum starts to produce progesterone that triggers the softening of endometrial lining for fertilized egg implantation.

Luteal Phase Defect Caused By Qi Deficiency

In traditional Chinese medicine, qi is defined as a substance contains properties of motion and invisibility. It comes from 3 sources
1. Primordial qi ( Heredity)
2. Inhaled qi ( Air inhaled by lung)
3. Qi essence (Absorbed from food by spleen)

I. Symptoms of qi deficiency
1. Shortness of breath
2. Fatigue, loose stools
3. Dizziness,
4. Pale face,
5. Weakened voice/reluctance to speak,
6. Sweating with little exertion
7. Loose stool
8. Etc.

II. Causes of qi deficiency
1. Stomach abnormal function
Stomach is important to digest food when it enter the body. If stomach qi is deficiency or can not digestive food properly due to intake of raw foods or cold foods, etc. for a prolonged period of time, it will cause less qi to be converted, resulting in lessening the function of spleen in qi formation and distribution.

2. Spleen
After food is digested by the stomach, food qi and essences are absorbed by spleen. Intake of certain food and weakened parental qi will cause spleen qi deficiency that leads to not enough qi to perform its function in assisting liver and lung in qi distribution to the body.

3. Lung
Lung move qi in lung channels, if for what ever reason, lung is damaged due to smokes, diseases, etc. It can not perform its function in combining the qi from the spleen and inhaled qi from the air to move blood and fluids to the abdomen.

4. Liver
Liver is vital in blood formation and moving blood yin in blood vessels. If lung qi is deficient, it causes sluggish liver qi in moving blood to warm the uterus, leading to blood stasis and cold uterus.

5. Etc.

III. Treatments
A. With herbs
1. Ren shen (Ginseng)
Ren shen is considered as one of most powerful herbs in strengthening the original qi in the body. Besides improving the spleen function in qi absorption, thus reducing the symptoms of distended chest and abdomen cramps and pain, it also enhances the lung qi by moistening the channels.
2. Xi yang shen (American ginseng)
Besides promoting the lung and spleen qi, it also increases the digestive system in absorbing vital energy and reducing the heat causes of qi stagnation by moistening the all qi transportation channels.
3. Dang shen (Pilose asiabell root)
Dang shen is a spleen and lung tonic herbs. It improves the lung function in moving qi smoothly through its channels and spleen function in absorbing qi after foods entering the stomach.
4. Tai zi shen (Pseudostellaria root)
Besides helping to increase the spleen and lung qi, it also generates fluids to prevent the heat causes of qi stagnation.
5. Huang qi (Astragalus root)
It is one of the herb that helps to increase the function of liver in generating more blood and liver qi in blood transportation.

                   Cerebral aneurysm

Cerebral aneurysm is defined as a cerebrovascular disorder causes of the blood vessel to bulge or balloon out of the wall of a blood vessel as a result of the weaken of blood vessels and veins and occurred mostly at the bifurcations and branches of the large arteries located at the Circle of Willis.

                               The Complications

Complications during cerebral aneurysm embolization continue to occur even at high volume experienced centers. Such situations are unexpected, complex and can have devastating consequences(21). Others indicated that Systemiccomplications secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage from an aneurysm are common (40%) and the mortality attributable to them (23%) is comparable to mortality from the primary lesion, rebleeding, or vasospasm(22). Dr. Chen M. suggested that the two most serious neuroendovascular procedural complications-namely, aneurysm perforation and thromboemboli aims to propose a role based checklist(23). Other complications include
1. Re-bleeding
there is a report of fifty-three of 236 consecutive patients (22.5%) who suffered a proved aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and who were admitted within 72 hours after subarachnoid hemorrhage to a primary emergency hospital had at least one rebleed within 6 months after the primary bleed. Two patients later had a rebleed within a mean of 3 years follow-up. Rebleeding was recorded if there was a sudden loss of consciousness and a verification by computed tomography, autopsy, lumbar puncture, or angiography. The peak incidence of rebleeding was within the first 24 hours and at the end of the first week after subarachnoid hemorrhage. The rebleed mortality rate was 74%, and only 19% of patients with a rebleed had a good outcome. The grade on admission, age, and sex do not affect the incidence nor the time of rebleeding(24).

2. Vasospasm.
In the continuation of a review of delayed vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage, originally published in 1994 and partially updated at the ninth vasospasm conference in Turkey. The incidence of delayed ischaemic deficit (DID) or symptomatic vasospasm reported in 1994 was 32.5% in over 30,000 reported cases. In recent years, 1994-2009, it was 6,775/23,806, or 28.5%. Many of the recent reports did not specify whether a calcium antagonist was used routinely, and when this was stated (usually nimodipine or nicardipine), DID was noted in 22.0% of 10,739 reported patients. The outcome of delayed ischaemia in the earlier survey was a death rate of 31.6%, with favourable outcomes in 36.2%. In recent reports, though with fewer than 1,000 patients, the outcome is possibly better, with death in 25.6% and good outcome in 54.1%. It thus appears likely that delayed vasospasm is still common but less so, and that the overall outcome has improved(25).

3. Hydrocephalus
Dr. Harrigan MR and the team at University of Alabama at Birmingham indicated that Patients underwent treatment of the ruptured aneurysm an average of 47.4 hours after admission and received an average total dose of 40.6 g of EACA. The mean length of time of administration of EACA was 35.6 hours. There was a total of 5 rehemorrhages, for an overall rebleeding rate of 1.4% and a rate ofrehemorrhage per 24-hour period of 0.71%. Overall, the rates of symptomatic vasospasm and permanent neurological deficits attributable to ischemic stroke were 11.5% and 7.2%, respectively, and the incidence of shunt-dependenthydrocephalus was 42.3%. Patients who were treated with coiling had higher rates of symptomatic vasospasm and ischemic complications than patients who had surgery(26).

4. Hyponatremia
Hyponatremia following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) therefore appears to be the result of increased natriuresis, due to the inappropriate elevation of ANP rather than SIADH. In this situation, water restriction should not be recommended, since the circulatory volume is decreased(27).

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated overtime, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relatively to the height. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered over weight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of American population are either overweight or obese.

You can calculate your BMI index BMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

The Studies of Body weight at age 20 years and breast cancer risk

Many studies have investigated the association between BMI at age 20 years (BMI20y) and breast cancer risk with consideration to estrogen/progesterone receptor status (ER/PR). In the study to investigate the the association between BMI20y and ER/PR-defined breast cancer risk among 41,594 women in the population-based Japan Public Health Center, posted in PubMed, showed that BMI and subsequent BMI gain were not associated with increased risk among premenopausal women, but were substantially associated with increased risk among postmenopausal women [corresponding RR(recent BMI)=1.31 (95%CI=1.07-1.59); RR(subsequent BMI gain)=1.32 (95%CI=1.09-1.60)]. In subanalyses by receptor status (∼50% of cases), the observed inverse association of BMI20y with risk was consistent with the result for ER-PR- [0.49 (95%CI=0.27-0.88)], while the observed positive associations of BMI gain with postmenopausal breast cancer risk appeared to be confined to ER+PR+ tumors [corresponding RR(for subsequent BMI gain)=2.24 (95%CI=1.50-3.34)]. Low BMI at age 20 years was substantially associated with an increased risk of breastcancer. In contrast, high recent BMI and subsequent BMI gain from age 20 were associated with increased risk of postmenopausal ER+PR+ tumors.

The Studies of  Effectiveness of green tea on weight reduction in obese Thais

In the study to investigate the effects of green tea on weight reduction in obese Thais, a randomized, controlled trial involving 60 obese subjects (body mass index, BMI > 25 kg/m2) was conducted. All subjects consumed a Thai diet containing 3 meals (8373.6 kJ/day) for 12 weeks, prepared by the Nutritional Unit at Srinagarind Hospital, showed that the diet contained 65% carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 20% fat. Body weight, BMI, body composition, resting energy expenditure, and substrate oxidation were measured at baseline, and during weeks 4, 8, and 12 of the study. Serum levels of leptin and urine VMA were measured at baseline and during the 12th week. Differences over time and between the treatments (green tea or placebo) over time were determined using two-factor ANOVA with repeated measures. In comparing the two groups, differences inweight loss were 2.70, 5.10, and 3.3 kg during the 4th, 8th, and 12th weeks of the study, respectively. At the 8th and 12th weeks of the study, body weight loss was significantly different (P < 0.05). At the 8th week, the difference in resting energy expenditure was 183.38 kJ/day (P < 0.001), the difference in the respiratory quotient was 0.02 (P < 0.05), and no significant differences existed in satiety score, food intake, or physical activity. Urine VMA was significantly different in the 12th week of the study (P < 0.05)(1).
