Regular Walking, The Easy Way for age 50 plus to Diseases Free of Age

The Kyung Hee University Global Campus in the investigation of the effects of Aloe vera on ultraviolet (UV) irradiation induces photo-damage of the skin, which in turn causes depletion of the dermal extracellular matrix and chronic alterations in skin structure.

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient which processes liver protective activity with no side effects, according to studies.

Herbal Artichoke Normalizes the Levels of Serum Cholesterol in Vivo and Human Study

Hyperlipidemia is a chronic condition of abnormally high blood cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver or dietary intake that processes a significant activity in the improvement of the digestive system by breaking down food, in the production of vitamin D and steroid hormone, particularly in the building of strong cell membranes.

There are 2 types of cholesterol. The low-density lipoprotein is also known as bad cholesterol which performs the aforementioned activity in the right levels and high-density lipoprotein which returns cholesterol back to the liver for reuse.

The study included 64 Golden Syrian hamsters (8 weeks old) fed control diet or a similar diet containing ALE (4.5 g/kg diet) for 6 weeks.

There were no significant changes for total cholesterol, HDL, non-HDL cholesterol triglycerides or fecal neutral sterols and bile acids were after 21 days for ALE-fed animals compared with controls.

However, ALE-fed male hamsters had significantly lower total cholesterol (15%), non-HDL cholesterol (30%) and triglycerides (22%) and female hamsters fed ALE showed reductions of 15% for total cholesterol, 29% for non-HDL cholesterol and 29% for triglycerides compared with controls after 42 days.


Furthermore, the total neutral sterol and bile acids concentrations also increased significantly by 50% and 53% in fecal samples of ALE fed males, and 82.4% and 25% in ALE fed females compared with controls.

Dr. Qiang Z, after taking into account other factors, said, "he ALE lowered hamster plasma cholesterol levels by a mechanism involving the greater excretion of fecal bile acids and neutral sterols after feeding for 42 days".

In order to reveal more information about artichoke anti-high blood cholesterol property, researchers evaluated the effects of artichoke leaf extract (ALE) supplementation (250 mg, 2 b.i.d.) on the lipid pattern,

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 92 overweight subjects with primary mild hypercholesterolemia for 8 weeks.

46 subjects were randomized to supplementation (age: 54.2 ± 6.6 years, body mass index (BMI): 25.8 ± 3.9 kg/m(2), male/female: 20/26) and 46 subjects to placebo (age: 53.8 ± 9.0 years, BMI: 24.8 ± 1.6 kg/m(2), male/female: 21/25).


Artichoke leaf extract (ALE) supplementation was associated with a significant increase in mean high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (p < 0.001) and in mean change in HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) (p = 0.004).


Moreover, ALE also significantly decreased the mean change in total cholesterol (p = 0.033), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (p < 0.001), total cholesterol/HDL ratio (p < 0.001) and LDL/HDL ratio (p < 0.001) comapred to control.


The findings clearly supported the use of artichoke leaf extract ALE for the treatment of patients with mild high blood cholesterol.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional formula for the treatment of patients with high blood cholesterol with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bioactive Compound Sinigrin, the Dietary Source of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are stable molecules which inhibit oxidation. Antioxidants are either produced by the host or from the dietary sources.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient which processes a strong antioxidant activity for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress investigated the antioxidant property of sinigrin.

Herbal Bilberry the Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Eye Disease

Eye disease is a general term of conditions associated with the damage of the optic nerve and impaired vision, including disease of the cornea and macular degeneration.

People with eye disease in the early stage may not have any symptoms. However, depending on the severity and location that affects the vision, people with eye disease at the advanced stage may experience symptoms of acute eye pain, hazy, blurred, or double vision, seeing flashes of light or sudden bright floating spots.

In the urgency to find a natural source of the compound for the treatment of eye disease, particularly in the older population, researchers investigated the effects of bilberry anthocyanosides (Vaccinium myrtillus L.).

Bilberry anthocyanosides were found to promote rhodopsin, a biological pigment found in the rods of the retina synthesis and regeneration.


Moreover, the compounds increased retinal sensitivity to changes in light intensity and improved the visual acuity and dark adaptation and blood supply of the retina.

The findings support the regular use of bilberry anthocyanosides as a dietary source against the age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, primary open-angle glaucoma, and other diseases.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about bilberry bioactive compound property, researchers evaluated the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) and anthocyanins on visual function in patients with normal tension glaucoma (NTG) based on the vascular theory of mechanisms of glaucomatous optic nerve damage.

332 subjects data (209 men and 123 women) treated with anthocyanins (n=132), GBE (n=103), or no medication (control, n=97) were reviewed.

According to the tested assays, the mean anthocyanin treatment duration was 24.32±10.43 (range, 6-53) months, and the mean GBE treatment duration was 23.81±10.36 months (range, 6-59) months.


After anthocyanin treatment, the mean best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for all eyes improved from 0.16 logMAR units, and Humphrey Visual Field (HVF) mean deviation improved from -6.44.


Dr. Shim SH, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that anthocyanins and GBE may be helpful in improving visual function in some individuals with NTG".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

In the urgency of finding a potential compound which processes a strong anti-inflammatory activity, researchers examined the effects of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM), a condensation product of indole-3-carbinol, and a glucosinolate naturally occurring in Brassica genus vegetables.


The study carried out by differentiated the 3T3-L1 adipocytes in the co-cultured with RAW 264.7 macrophages and exposed to 20 µM, 40 µM and 60 µM DIM for 24 h followed by 100 nM insulin for 20 min.


According to the tested assays, DIM significantly (p<0.05) reduced the production and mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines (MCP-1, IL-6, and TNFα) in a concentration-dependent manner.

Injection of DIM was found to increase the expression of proteins involved in the positive regulation of metabolism and proliferation (IRS-1 pY612 and Akt-1/PKB pT308) through its anti-inflammatory properties.

In other words, DIM influences the glucose metabolic pathway by exerting an anti-inflammatory effect.

Dr.Lopez-Vazquez A, the lead scientist said, "The potential therapeutic benefits of DIM in the treatment of glucose metabolic disorders deserve further studies".

In order to reveal more information about DIM anti-inflammatory effects, researchers examined the dietary components found in cruciferous vegetables, on brain inflammation.

Administration of DIM suppressed lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced expression of reactive oxygen species and promoted the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host through inhibiting the microglial hyperactivation by attenuating inflammatory transcription factor NF-κB.

Furthermore, DIM protected primary cortical neurons from inflammatory toxicity induced by LPS.

In vivo model of neuroinflammation, DIM also suppressed LPS-induced brain inflammation in mouse hippocampus.

Based on the findings, Dr. Kim HW, the lead researchers said, "DIM may have beneficial potential against brain inflammation and neurodegenerative diseases through the negative regulation of the NF-κB signal pathway in microglia".
