Artichoke, the Potential Anti Metabolic Syndrome Natural Remedy, According to Medical Literature

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the treatment of metabolic syndrome with no side effects, according to studies.

Metabolic syndrome is a group of syndromes or diseases associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and types 2 diabetes, including high blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels and excess body fat around the waist.

If you have 3 of the above syndrome you are considered to have metabolic syndrome.

According to statistics, metabolic syndrome is a growing prevalence of chronic conditions, accounting for 17% of all health care costs and directly contributing to 43% of all deaths in Canada.

In other words, 1 in 5 people in Canada has metabolic syndrome, affecting 19.1% of all Canadian adults.

There are certain risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic syndrome besides the five mentioned above including age, family history of metabolic syndrome, physical activity, and women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Untreated metabolic syndrome epidemiologically may induce complications of chronic illness such as atherosclerosis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and kidney diseases.

Some researchers suggested that metabolic syndrome and the widespread obesity in the US may be correlated as they share a hallmark of insulin resistance.

Dr. Keller KB in the differentiation of the metabolic syndrome in obese wrote, "Westernization of diets has been part of the problem. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are being replaced by readily accessible foods high in saturated fat, sugar, and refined carbohydrates".

And, "The metabolic syndrome associated with abdominal obesity, which includes insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and elevated CRP levels, identifies subjects who have an increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Twenty to 25% of the adult population in the United States have metabolic syndrome, and in some older groups this prevalence approaches 50%".

The results strongly suggested that both metabolic syndrome and obesity in the US population are attributed to the Western diet pattern.

In other words, by changing to a healthy diet such as a traditional diet, the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome can be decreased substantially.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of metabolic syndrome examined the long-term supplementation with dietary luteolin (LU)-enriched artichoke leaf (AR) in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and its complications in C57BL/6N mice.

Selected mice were fed a normal diet, an HFD, or an HFD plus AR or LU for 16 weeks.

In the HFD-fed mice, the application of AR decreased the adiposity and dyslipidemia by decreasing lipogenesis.

Moreover, AR +LU prevented insulin sensitivity by decreasing the level of plasma gastric inhibitory polypeptide and activity of hepatic glucogenic enzymes and the proteins associated with liver inflammation,

Additional analysis of the effect of AR and LU suggested, although the anti-metabolic syndrome effects of AR and LU were similar, the anti-adiposity and anti-dyslipidemic effects of AR were more pronounced.

The findings strongly support the use of artichoke for the treatment of metabolic syndrome.

In order to know more information of artichoke anti-metabolic syndrome activity, researchers evaluated the protective effect of the ethanol leaves extract of C. scolymus in alloxan induced stress oxidant, hepatic-kidney dysfunction and histological changes in liver, kidney, and pancreas of different experimental groups of rats.

The total of 40 male Wistar rats included in the study were induced to diabetes with a single dose intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of alloxan (150 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)), then the diabetic rats were orally and daily administrated of ethanol extract from C. scolymus at two doses (200-400 mg/kg, b.w) or (12 mg/kg, b.w) with anti-diabetic reference drug, Acarbose for one month.
In vivo, injection of the ethanol extracts from the leaves of C. scolymus (200-400 mg/kg) decreased significantly, the α-amylase levels in serum of diabetic rats associated with a significant reduction in blood glucose rate of 42,84% and 37,91% after 28 days of treatment.

The extracts also induced a significant lowered of plasma total cholesterol (T-Ch) by 18,11% and triglyceride (TG) by 60,47%, low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C) by 37,77%, compared to diabetic rats.

Oxidative stress markers in the liver, kidney, and pancreas also were reduced by the injection of the extracts.

The findings suggested the anti-metabolic syndrome of artichoke was attributed to its anti-hyperglycemic properties, at least partly mediated by antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea, The Beverage Inhibits The Excessive Uric Acid That Cause Acute and Chronic Gout

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in blocking the onset and treatment of gout and recurrent gout, some scientists suggested.

Gout is a condition of recurrently inflammatory arthritis characterized by a red, tender, hot, and swollen joint caused by overexpression of purine in the body.

Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, or hyperuricemia. Uric acid is a by-product that is produced during the digestive process in the breaking down of chemical ingredients purines.

Purines are natural nitrogen-containing compounds found in the cell DNA and RNA, including adenine (6-aminopurine) and guanine (2-amino, 6-oxypurine), is made inside the cells of the body

exogenously, purines can come from foods containing purine.

Under normal conditions, uric acid is eliminated by the kidney through urination. However, a high uric acid level can occur when the kidneys don't eliminate uric acid efficiently. People with kidney deficiency are associated with high levels of uric acid if foods with high levels of purines are consumed in a large amount, including red meat, seafood, and mushroom.

Some researchers suggested that people who are obese, overweight with diabetes, long-term use of diuretics and excessive alcohol drinking are associated with the risk of high levels of uric acid in the blood.

Additionally, genetic mutation inherited from the parents such as Q141K polymorphism and CFTR ΔF508 certain medical conditions such as tumor lysis syndrome, hypothyroidism, and psoriasis is also some major risk factors to cause excessive levels of uric acid in the blood.

If you are currently taking long-term medications as maintenance therapy, to keep uric acid levels steady. Please make sure that you are aware of their side effects.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

According to the joint study led by the University of Nagasaki, green tea and its bioactive compounds Epigallo catechin-O-gallate (EGCG) may be considered as a putative curative drug for various diseases of gout, through its properties in reducing the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) in response to vascular endothelial growth factor signal (VGFG) for the formation of gout through expression of levels of uric acid.

The study also emphasized that green tea with high levels of antioxidant and function in the stimulated production of natural antioxidant in the body may also be used to reduce symptoms of recurrently inflammatory arthritis and inflammatory arthritis such as gout, through inhibiting the oxidative stress in the induced production of inflammatory cytokines to facilitate symptoms of inflammation.

The above differentiation was supported by the study of the effect of EGCG on monosodium urate monohydrate (MSU)-induced inflammation and cryopyrin (NLRP3 inflammasome) activation in C57BL/6 mice received a subcutaneous injection or oral gavage of EGCG before the intraperitoneal injection of MSU.

Truly, the application green tea EGCG decreased expression of gouty arthritis caused by the injection of MSU-induced neutrophil infiltration with a function to initiate inflammation in the acute phase of infection and IL-1β secretion, in response and resistance to pathogens, but can also exacerbate damage during chronic disease and acute tissue injury.

The injection of green EGCG also decreased MSU-triggered neutrophil cytosolic factor 1, in activated inflammatory response to optimize healing and reduce injury to the body but the proteins have been found to cause severe damage to the infectious site and NLRP3 protein expression in initiated systematic inflammatory expression.

Moreover, the effect of green tea in protection against gout occurrence also limited pro-inflammatory mediator secretion interleukin 1 beta (IL1β), a mediator of inflammation, in response to acute-phase infection, interleukin 6 (IL-6) produced by large amount at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in regulated monocytes, memory T cells, and dendritic cells to the sites of inflammation, and serum amyloid A, the serum was found to increase substantially in patients of chronic inflammatory disease, without limiting the function of the mediators in protect the infectious site against pathogens invasion.

More profoundly, the efficacy of green tea in reduced recurrent gout also extended to suppress NLRP3 inflammasome in stimulated caspase-1 in promoted secretion of other proinflammatory cytokines activation.

Dr. Jhang JJ, the lead author said, "EGCG treatment ameliorates MSU-induced inflammation, suggesting that EGCGexerts anti-inflammatory effect against MSU-induced acute gout attack."

Additionally, the University of Pretoria suggested that polyphenols extracted from green tea also exhibited an antioxidant effect in reducing the pronounce of oxidative stress by their antioxidant properties.

Catechin (C) (Ki = 303.95, uncompetitive), epicatechin (EC) (Ki = 20.48, mixed), epigallocatechin (EGC) (Ki = 10.66, mixed), epicatechin gallate (ECg) (Ki = 2.86, mixed) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) (Ki = 0.76, competitive) were found to have similar efficacy as allopurinol (Ki = 0.30, mixed), the drug used to inhibit the levels of xanthine oxidase (XO) in gout patients, through reducing reactive oxygen species in the initiation of oxidative stress that facilitates the inflammatory symptoms.

Taken all together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered as a functional food for reduced onset and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of gout with no adverse effects.

Healthy Food Cucumber, the Potential Free Radical Scavenger

Free radical scavengers are antioxidants which inhibit free radicals before they can induce a chain of domino's reaction that has been found to cause protein, lipid and cell damage, leading to cell injury and cell death.

Most common free radical scavengers can be either produced by the host or from the dietary sources, including catalases, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), vitamin A, C, and E.

Oxidative stress is imbalanced with the ratio of antioxidants and free radicals. In other words, overexpression of free radicals and low levels of antioxidants in the body can lead to oxidative stress, a major cause of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

In a healthy individual, dietary, antioxidant and antioxidant enzymes produced by the liver are more than enough to counter free radicals produced from all sources.

However, for people with a weakened immune system, intake of antioxidant supplements may be necessary, and in chronic illness patients, antioxidant supplementation at an early stage of illness has been found to improve therapies.

Due to the complexity in treating chronic and critical illness patients, some researchers suggested that
professionals need to understand the mechanism of damage caused by free radicals and free radical scavengers protective activity for the treatment of varied pathological conditions.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural compound which processes anti-free radical overexpression, researchers investigated the aqueous fruit extract of Cucumis sativus L. anti-free radical scavenging activities.

In vitro, aqueous fruit extract at 250 and 500 μg/ml showed a significant effect on the inhibition of free radicals through scavenging activity.

Compared to other chemical compounds, The C. sativus fruit extract showed maximum antioxidant and at 500 μg/ml and 500 mg/kg,

The efficacy of the extracts was attributed to the presence of flavonoids and tannins evidenced by preliminary phytochemical screening.

Additionally, in the comparison of carrot, cucumber, and broccoli seed flours extracted with 50% acetone for their free radical scavenging property researcher found that
* Cucumber showed a strong free radical scavenging property against DPPH radical scavenging capacity, oxygen radical absorbing capacity, and hydroxyl radical (HO•) scavenging capacity secondary to the broccoli seed flour extract.
* in ABTS•+ scavenging capacity of 250 μmol TE/g, carrot showed a better effect compared to cucumber.

Based on the findings, Dr. Choe U, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "The results might be used to promote the value-added utilization of these vegetable seed flours in improving human health".

Taken altogether, cucumber may be used for the treatment of disease associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Anise, the Anti Breast cancer Functional Herb, Scientists Suggest

The ability to cure breast cancer with a natural plant without inducing adverse effects is the dream that many scientists would hope to see in their lifetime. However, as of today, the hope is still a long way from reality.

Some studies suggested that herbal Anise may process a significant effect on the reduction of risk and treatment of breast cancer with no side effects.

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by abnormal cell growth in the breast tissues. Mose cases breast cancer begins with the alternation of DNA in the cells in the inner lining of the breast. After colonizing the entire breast the adance stage, malignant cancers can travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells and tissue.

The exact causes of breast cancer are unknown. researchers have tried hard but still could not answer the question, why people with the same healthy condition and genetic similarity in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while other female siblings do not.

Some researchers suggested the risk factors associated with breast cancer should be divided into preventable and unpreventable.

The preventable risk factors are condition can be changed through diet and lifestyle and choice, such as physical inactivity, obesity or overweight, poor diet, chest radiation, excessive alcohol drinking and use of hormone therapy.

Unpreventable risk factors are conditions that cannot be changed including the genetic opposition, age, dense breast tissue, early menstruation, and late menopause, race, and gender.

However, regardless of preventable and unpreventable risk factors associated with the onset of the disease, the risk of breast cancer is lower in women who follow a long-term healthy diet and lifestyle.

According to the National Breast cancer foundation, in all women with breast cancer, 60-70% of them have no connection to these risk factors at all, and some women with these risk factors will never develop cancer.

In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Dr. Ji Hyun Kim, the lead author in the study led by the National Cancer Center, "Dietary Factors and Female Breast Cancer Risk: A Prospective Cohort Study", said, "grilled meat and high-cholesterol food intake and irregular eating habits may be associated with a higher risk of breast cancer".

These results indicated women who follow the Western diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meats, processed foods are associated with substantially increased risk of breast cancer compared to women, following the traditional diet pattern.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region.

The popular herb has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, stimulant, and tonic agent to treat head-lice and mites, increase blood pressure, prevent formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract and menstrual cramps, etc.

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is cancer that starts in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk. there are also rare cases that breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast.

Ingredients
Besides the main ingredient Anethole, it also contains, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the concerns that genomic instability, accumulative mutations, and subsequent changes in intracellular signaling cascades may influence the development of human breast cancers, researchers at The University of Mississippi launched an investigation of the transcriptional activity of NF-kappaB measured by cell-based reporter gene assay

On epoxypseudoisoeugenol-2-methyl butyrate (EPB), a phenylpropanoid isolated from the herbal Anise exerts a significant effect in the inhibition of cell growth, cell cycle progression and apoptosis in MCF-7 (estrogen-dependent) and BT-549 (estrogen-independent) breast cancer cells, through de-activating the NF-kappaB which plays an important role in the control of transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival.

EPB also found to block the proliferation of both MCF-7 and BT-549 cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner.

The further analysis suggested that EPB induced apoptosis by cell cycle arrest in G(1)/G(0) phase in both MCF-7 and BT 549 cells.

Dr.Ma G, the lead scientist at the final report said, " in vitro results indicated that EPB has potential for use against both hormone-dependent and hormone-independent breast cancers and its effects seem to be mediated by inhibiting the NF-kappaB activity".

In an attempt to find food components potentially acting as selective estrogen receptor modulators SERMs for treatment of breast cancer with no side effects, the University of Athens submitted four plant aqueous extracts derived from Greek flora (Sideritis Euboea, Sideritis clandestina, Matricaria chamomilla, and Pimpinella anisum) in a series of in vitro biological assays to examine their SERM profile.

All plant extracts including Anise at a concentration range 10-100 microg/mL demonstrated a potency as of SERMs in stimulating osteoblastic cell differentiation and antiestrogenic effect on breast cancer cells without proliferative effects on cervical adenocarcinoma cells.

Additionally, the antiestrogenic effect of the plant extracts was reduced under the presence of estradiol on MCF-7 cells, which suggests the extracts may process a potential estrogen receptor-related mechanism.

Taken altogether, herbal Anise may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of breast cancer, pending on the further confirmation of large sample size and multi-center studies.

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Releases the Body Toxins through Kidney Urinary Secretion

Scientists may have found a functional herbal medicine that process a significant effect in promoting the secretion of toxin through increasing the urinary flow, some studies suggested.

The diuretic effect is the activity of substances that promote urinary secretion.

Many diuretics medicine can interfere with the functioning kidney in the regulation of the levels of water in the body, leading to worsening kidney function and abnormal electrolyte levels.

Certain medications that treat conditions of high blood pressure, glaucoma and edema can damage the kidney function by overworking the kidney in water release.

Dr. Yusra Habib Khan, the lead author in the study "Chronic Kidney Disease, Fluid Overload and Diuretics: A Complicated Triangle" said, "The use of diuretics was associated with adverse renal outcomes indicated by decline in eGFR (Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a measure of the function of the kidneys) and increased risk of (renal replacement therapy) RRT initiation in our cohort of NDD-CKD patients".

Therefore, the intake of medicine that has a negative effect in kidney function and diuretics medicine should be taken with extreme care. If you are currently taking some of the above medicine, please make that you know the adverse effects.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.

Besides the major constituents of phenolic glycoside arbutin, tannins, and flavonoids, herbal medicine also contains free hydroquinocoumaric acidaric acid, caffeic acid, salicylic acid, flavonoid quercetin, and triterpenes ursolic acid.

Because of increased awareness of conventional medication's side effects, there is increasing interest in the health and wellness benefits of herbs and botanicals. According to the Laboratoire de Pharmacognosy, in an animal study, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi and hydroalcoholic extracts increased urine flow. Urinary sodium excretion in rats.
Use of herbal diuresis should be taken with care and under professional prescription as the application may have a strong effect in the increase of urine flow rates to induce renal clearance of the toxicant.

In the article written by Michael E. Peterson DVM, MS, in Small Animal Toxicology (Third Edition), 2013, the author wrote, intoxications that are most likely to respond to force diuresis are those with a high level of renal excretion of the primary toxicant (e.g., bromide, lithium, amphetamine, phenobarbital, and salicylate).

Protein-bound toxins are not cleared efficiently by diuresis.

However, the patient must not be anuric or significantly oliguric

The primary problems associated with force diuresis include potential fluid overload and electrolyte abnormalities.

Michael E. Peterson DVM, MS, continued, "The practitioner should monitor for hyponatremia, hypokalemia, water intoxication, pulmonary edema, and cerebral edema. Additionally, some toxins such as tricyclic antidepressants and many sedative-hypnotics increase the patient’s susceptibility to interstitial pulmonary edema. Forced diuresis is contraindicated in these intoxications"

These results suggested that although herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may be potent to detox the body toxin through increasing the urinary secretion. However, caution should be taken to prevent damage to kidney and kidney function.

Please make sure you only take the Arctostaphylos uva-ursi extract with the permission of the specialists in the related field.

However, additional data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi diuretic possibilities.

Arnica, The Herb Which Speeds Up Bruise Healing, Scientists Reveal

Herbal Arnica may process property of speeding bruise healing without inducing adverse effects, some studies suggested.

A bruise is a condition characterized by black and blue marks on the skin due to trauma, caused by an object or force that strikes the body, leading to damage to capillaries and sometimes venules that allow blood to seep, hemorrhage, or extravasate into the surrounding interstitial tissues.

A bruise can also be induced by surgery caused by instruments that pierce into the deep layer of the skin to create an opening.

Most Bruising resolves themselves in a few days or weeks.

Some bruises may cause pain but the pain usually goes away when the color of the area fades away.

Bruising, also known as a contusion, is defined as a condition of

Some researchers suggested that

Most common causes of bruising are sport related.

Sport physical activities can sometimes cause broken bones, strains and sprains, dislocations, torn tendons,..... and muscle swelling. Overuse of body muscles in sport is one of the risk factors that can cause, inducing bruising.

Ice and heat therapies by Appling ice or heat immediately after the injury to reduce blood flow around the area. were found to be effective in preventing bruising.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.

The chemical ingredients besides major bioactive compound helenalin, Anica also contains 11,13- dihydrohelenaline, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside,..... and six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivatives.

In the assessment of the comparative utility of topical formulations in hastening the resolution of skin bruising, researchers at the Northwestern University, conducted a double (patient and rater) blinded randomized controlled trial with numbers of healthy volunteers, age range 21-65 years.

After four standard bruises of 7 mm diameter each were created on the bilateral upper inner arms, 5 cm apart, two per arm, using a 595-nm pulsed-dye laser (Vbeam; Candela Corp., Wayland, MA, U.S.A.). on each subject, each bruising area was injected by one topical agent, including 5% vitamin K, 1% vitamin K and 0·3% retinol, 20% arnica, or white petrolatum, twice a day for 2 weeks.
At the end of the 2 weeks experiment, researchers found that
* All four treatment score a significant improvement in the change in the rater bruising score.

* The mean improvement associated with 20% arnica was greater than with white petrolatum (P=0·003), and the mixture of 1% vitamin K and 0·3% retinol.

* However, 5% vitamin K cream processes the highest bruise healing score compared to other applications.

These results suggested that topical 20% Arnica ointment may be able to reduce bruising more effectively than placebo and more effectively than low-concentration vitamin K formulations, such as 1% vitamin K with 0·3% retinol.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial with three parallel arms to reaffirm Arnica efficacy in the control of bruising, reducing swelling and promoting recovery after local trauma, 64 adults undergoing elective surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome were randomized to take three tablets daily of homeopathic Arnica 30C or 6C or placebo for seven days before surgery and fourteen days after surgery.

According to the summary of the experiment final report, researchers showed

* There were no group differences in the primary outcome measures of pain (P=0.79) and bruising (P=0.45) at day four.

* Swelling and use of analgesic medication also did not differ between arnica and placebo groups.

* Adverse events were reported by 2 patients in the arnica 6C group, 3 in the placebo group and 4 in the arnica 30C group.

These results strongly indicated that Arnica does not process analgesic property.

Moreover, in the study to assess Arnica decreases bruising and muscle pain efficacy, the Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial including 53 subjects.

Measurement of ankle range of motion and muscle tenderness were also recorded during Leg pain induced by calf raises.

Then, each participant received 2 tubes of cream, 1 with active Arnica and 1 with a placebo.

The creams were applied to the lower legs immediately after the exercise, and again at 24 and 48 hours post-exercise according to the "RIGHT" or "LEFT" labels.

At 48 hours post-exercise, subjects had their ankle range of motion and muscle tenderness measured.

Subjects used the analog scale to rate pain in each leg at baseline, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours.

At the final day of study, by analyzing the reported returned by participants, scientists found that

* No significant differences in pain scores were seen before exercise.

* Pain scores on legs treated with Arnica were higher than scores on those receiving placebo 24 hours after exercise respectively.

* Pain scores on day 3 and day 4 were not significantly different.

* There was no difference in muscle tenderness.

* Ankle range of motion did not differ significantly on either day 1 or day 3.

Dr. Adkison JD, the lead author suggested, Arnica may increase pain in the affected area within 48 hours immediately after application.

Taking all together, herbal Arnica may be used as a therapeutic treatment for speeding up bruise healing however, patients should be aware that topical application of herbal Arnica does not process analgesic property. In some cases, it may increase pain in the affected area.

Green Tea and its Bioactive Polyphenols Suppress the Onset and Progression of Osteoporosis, Medline Studies Find

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of osteoporosis, some scientists suggested.

Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by progression in the reduction of bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue and considered a major health problem in both elderly men and women.

The diseases also affect all bone in the body, including the bones of the spine, hip, and wrist

Scientists as of today do not know the exact causes of osteoporosis. However, they do know that certain factors are associated with the onset and progression of the disease.

Osteoporosis is the common disease among the elderly, probably due to the aging effect that induces nutrition deficiency such as
* Vitamin D insufficiency and reduced calcium absorption,

* Reduced hormone production, the drop of estrogen levels after menopause, can speeds up bone loss.

* Reduced production of bone mass and increased bone reabsorption.

These results suggested that osteoporosis can make the bone more fragile and easier to break. In the elderly, osteoporosis can be dangerous, as fractures can cause prolonged immobility, and required a longer healing process.

Some researchers suggested that fractures in the older population are the most common cause of blood clots or pneumonia, both of which can have fatal consequences.

Long-term use of certain medicines, such as anti-seizure drug Glucocorticoids and medical conditions such as kidney disease, Cushing's syndrome, and an overactive thyroid or parathyroid, can also increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Dr. Stephen P Tuck, the lead author on the study Osteoporosis in men said, "The incidence of osteoporotic fractures in elderly men, just as in aged women, increases exponentially with age; the rise in men, however, is some 5–10 years later than in women. Up to 50% of male osteoporosis have no identifiable etiology; however elderly males have a much higher likelihood of having an identifiable secondary cause than younger men".

Truly, both males and females share the same conditions of the onset of osteoporosis, but the onset of the disease in men is about 10 years later, compared to a woman in the same age.

Interestingly, in the observation of hip fracture in the aging population, Dr. Eric Orwoll, a physician-researcher who studies osteoporosis at Oregon Health and Science University wrote, “A third of all hip fractures occur in men, yet the problem of osteoporosis in men is frequently downplayed or ignored.”

Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the study to evaluate the effects of ingestion of green tea and green tea bioactive compounds in mitigating bone loss and risk of osteoporotic fractures in both elderly women and men, researchers found that the applications exert significant activities in reducing the onset of osteoporosis, through their antioxidants and initiation of the production of natural antioxidant in the body such as glutathione and enzymes (e.g., catalase and superoxide dismutase) in inhibiting the levels of ROS that facilitate the chain reaction.

Truly, the overexpression of free radicals has been associated with the change in the balance between activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, leading to osteoclasts in destroying the calcified tissue and inducing bone remodeling.

These results demonstrated that green tea and its bioactive components exhibit a significant decrease in the risk of fracture by improving bone mineral density and preventing free radicals in damage the bone-forming osteoblasts while suppressing osteoclastic activities.

Moreover, in the review of the effect of green tea and its bioactive components on bone health, researchers indicated that the ingestions display an impressive osteoprotective impact on bone mass and microarchitecture in various bone loss models associated with aging, sex hormone deficiency, and chronic inflammation.

The implication of reduced onset and progression of osteoporosis in the aging population due to sex hormone deficiency may be attributed to green tea and its bioactive compound in increasing the levels of osteocalcin, a bone formation marker, decreasing serum of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), a bone resorption marker and improving the body in the absorption of calcium.

In fact, the serum levels of osteocalcin (OC) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) are considered effective measurements in the rate of bone turn over in patients with osteoporosis.

Interestingly, application of green tea and its bioactive compound also is found to modulate the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the regulation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, through inhibiting the production of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the liver in initiating inflammation and reducing levels of interleukin-1 and 6(IL-1-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), the sensitive markers of systemic inflammation.

These differentiation were supported by the study in the evaluation of the efficacy of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) at mitigating bone loss and microstructure deterioration along with related mechanisms in 40 androgen-deficient aged male rats, a model of male osteoporosis, randomly assigned to received A 2 (sham vs. orchidectomy) × 2 (no GTP and 0.5% GTP in drinking water) for 16 weeks.

At the end of experiment, researchers found that rats treated with GTP demonstrate an increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, bone mineral density, and trabecular volume, number, and strength of femur; trabecular volume and thickness and bone formation in both the proximal tibia and periosteal tibial shaft, and decreased eroded surface in the proximal tibia and endocortical tibial shaft; and increased liver glutathione peroxidase activity.

The findings indicated a strong implication of green tea polyphenols in decreasing cortical and trabecular bone loss and increasing both bone density by stimulating the overexpression of bone formation and reducing bone resorption via antioxidant capacity.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered functional foods in ameliorating early-onset, progression and combined with standard medicine for the treatment of osteoporosis.

However, the intake of green tea supplements should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.
