Herbal Ashwagandha Destroys Liver Cancer Cells In Vitro

Liver formed part of the detoxed organs in the human body is the largest internal organ that filters the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing them to the rest of the body.

The liver also plays an essential role to produce cholesterol to build a strong cell wall, steroid hormones, and vitamin D and aid the digestive function in food absorption and detoxify toxic chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Liver disease is a process of reduced function of the liver acutely or gradually.

According to the Canadian Liver Foundation, approximately one in ten Canadians, or more than 3 million people in Canada has some forms of liver disease. 95% of deaths from liver disease are due to chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver cancer, including 25% of obese patients.

Compared to cancer caused by irregular cell growth in specific tissues of an organ, liver cancer precisely is caused by uncontrolled cell growth in the liver tissue that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the liver.

At the advanced stage, the cancerous cell in the primary liver cancer can travel a distance away to infect other nearby healthy tissue or organ, via blood and fluid circulation, leading to secondary metastasis.

Liver cancer is caused by the alternation of liver cell DNA. Because of lower nerve tissue, most patients in the very early stage of liver cancer are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms upper abdominal pain, general weakness, abdominal swelling, jaundice and white, chalky stools accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

Liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

The 5-year survival rate of 44% of people diagnosed in the early stage of liver cancer only is 31%., compared to 90% and 100% of colon and breast cancer, respectively.

Some researchers suggested long-term excessive alcohol use has been linked to an increased risk of liver cancer and worse prognosis compared to other forms of liver cancer

"Liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with hepatitis B and C infections being the main causes".

"Alcohol abuse and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are other dominant risk factors. Due to improvements in the treatment of hepatitis infections and increased alcohol consumption in some regions, it is likely that alcohol will become a leading cause of liver cancer".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers investigated the antioxidant and apoptotic inductive effects of Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) leaf extract ((ASH-WX; 6.25 mg/ml-100 mg/ml)) against a hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2cells).

According to the tested differentiation, ASH-WX injection demonstrated increased cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells compared to untreated control with IC50 of 5% (approximately 5.0 mg/ml).

ASH-WX also exerted strong antioxidant activities by increasing the levels of Fas-ligand associated with cell death programming and matrixes involved regulating of cancer cell migration, invasion, and metastasis and decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory induced systemic inflammation.

Furthermore, the extracts were also found to interact with cyclin D1, an important regulator of cell cycle progression.

More precisely, ASH-WX induced cell death in HepG2cells was found to increase significant accumulation in the G0/G1 and G2/M phases compared to the control and untreated cells.

In other words, ASH-WX blocked the proliferation through cell cycle arrest.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Ashwagandha could be a powerful antioxidant and a promising anticancer agent against HCC".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of liver cancer, pending to larger sample size and multicenter study.

Herbal Anise In Attenuated Risk, Progression and Treatment of Neuro degenerative Disease

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of neurodegenerative disease, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, ....

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

Neurodegenerative disease is the progressive condition characterized by loss of structure or function of neurons, including the death of neurons leading to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's disease

According to statistics as of today, 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer'sdisease; 1 million from Parkinson's; 400,000 from multiple sclerosis (MS); 30,000 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), and 30,000 from Huntington's disease. By 2030, the disease is estimated to increase substantially as many as 1 in 5 American elder over the age of 65

According to the Vivo and in vitro experimental models, application of essential oil isolated from anise expressed a significantly neuroprotective effect in seizure attacks induced by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) injection and neuronal hypoxia induced by oxygen withdrawal as well as on the production of dark neurons and induction of long-term potentiation (LTP).

Further examine, researchers found that injection of Anise oil significantly prolonged the period between seizure attacks by inhibited the production of dark neurons activated by depolarization, glutamate release caused by toxicity of pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) to induce neuron collapsed in different regions of the brain in epileptic rats and reduced the amplitude and duration of epileptiform burst discharges due to neuron abnormal excitability induced by injection of intraperitoneal PTZ

Moreover, the application of Anise essential oil also significantly enhanced the duration of the appearance of anoxic terminal negativity in the CA1 region of hippocampal slices in initiated neuroprotective effect through direct stabilization of the cell membrane after acute onset of hypoxia and ischemia caused by oxygen withdrawal and inhibited the induction of LTP.

Dr. Karimzadeh F, the lead author, after taking into account other confounders said, "the anticonvulsant and neuroprotective effects of anise oil, likely via inhibition of synaptic plasticity".

Additionally, the investigate the Pimpinella anisum (Anise) on the physiological and neurological parameter on normal and diabetic rats induced by Streptozetocin (STZ), by assigning rats randomly to eight groups: 1P stP control group and received citrate buffer, 2P ndP diabetic group treated with STZ (50mg/kg. b. wt), 3P rdP BPA group treated with BPA (30mg/kgbwt), 4P thP Anise group treated with anise oil. (3g/kgb. wt),5P thP STZ + BPA group combination between STZ and BPA with the same dose, 6P thP group treated with (STZ+Anise), 7P thP group treated with (STZ + Anise + BPA) and 8P thP group received Anise and BPA indicated that rat group treated with Anise (STZ + Anise) and diabetic rats treated with (Anise + BPA) exerted a significant decrease the levels of Norepinephrine(NE) in stimulated stress, mood, restlessness and anxiety disorders caused by oxidative stress.

Interestingly, rat group treated with Anise alone or combined with other substances also reduced the levels of dopamine (DA) and the 5-HT in the induction of neurotoxicity in comparison with the vehicle and diabetic (STZ) group.

These results suggested that the treatment of Anise decreases the neurotoxic effect induced by (BPA), particularly, in the application of BPA increased substantial toxicity in diabetes in compared to control.

Further to support the efficacy of essential oil of Pimpinella anisum in protection against neurodegenerative disease, researchers at the Saida University conducted an experiment to test the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of the essential oil against chronic lead acetate (0.2%) intoxication during the gestation and lactation period, in Wistar rat pups, the results suggested that injection of toxic chemical-induced impairments of brain weight and increased psychological parameters of the level of anxiety, depression and locomotor hyperactivity in compared to control rats were inhibited by administration of Anise essential oil without causing effect of brain weight

Taken together, Anise essential oil may be considered as an adjunct therapy to reduced risk and used a combination with conventional standard medicine in attenuated progression and treatment of neurodegenerative disease.

Herbal Cayenne, the Anti Cancers Functional Food, Scientists Find

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice that processes a potential for reducing the risk and treatment of cancers, some studies suggested.

Cancers are a class of chronic and medical conditions characterized by cells' growth irregularly and disorderly.

Most cancers start on the surface of the inner lining of organ tissue. At this early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms.

At the later stage, most cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue via fluid and blood circulation.

As of today, researchers do not know the exact cause of cancer neither they know why people with the same health condition and family history, some are susceptible to DNA alternation in facilitating the onset of cancer, while others do not.

There are many prevalent risk factors associated with the cancer onset, depending on the primary location, including an increase of age, excessive alcohol consumption, exposure to chemical toxins and sunlight, and infectious pathogens.

Noticeably, in the study of "Dietary and Lifestyle Risk Factors for Colorectal Cancer in Apparently Healthy Adults in Jordanian Hospitals" conducted by the joint investigation lead by the Jordan University of Science and Technology, Dr. Omran S, the led author said, "Colorectal cancer (CRC) risk is expected to continue rising due to dietary patterns, sedentary lifestyle, and other practices" and "Data was collected using a self-report questionnaire measuring sociodemographic characteristics, dietary habits, physical activity, and lifestyle risk factors of CRC. The mean age of participants was 57.0 ± 8.56 years. The majority of participants were male (71.8 %) and with less than secondary school formal education (60.7 %). The commonest risk factors for CRC among the participants were overweight or obesity (76.1 %), lack of exercise (71.6 %), limited consumption of vegetables (70.8 %), smoking (60.6 %), over-consumption of red meat (56.3 %), and diabetes mellitus (24.1 %)".

These results suggested that by following a healthy diet with less saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food and more in fruits and vegetables and lifestyle, the risk of cancers can be reduced substantially.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to subtropical and tropical regions.

The spicy herb has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance the circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

In the study to examine whether Capsaicin, a pungent phytochemical in a variety of red peppers processes an anti-proliferative effect on numbers of cancer, researchers at the Changhua Christian Hospital, launched an investigation of cell proliferation/viability and cytotoxicity of KB cells exposed to capsaicin.

On the human KB cancer cells, the application of capsaicin exerted a significant effect in reducing cancer cell proliferation/viability and induced cell death in a dose-dependent manner compared to untreated control.d t

In cell cycle analysis, capsaicin inhibits cancer cell division n in cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase of KB cells.

Further analysis suggested that capsaicin growth inhibition of KB cells was attributed mostly in the induction of cell apoptosis, through disrupting the pathway associated with cancer cellular response in differentiation, proliferation, and survival.

Interestingly, in the concerns that diet pattern and selection may be associated with the risk of cancer onset, researchers at the Inst. of Cytology and Preventive Oncology (ICMR) launched an investigation to examine the effects of Indian diet's many unique dietary constituents, including spices like chili pepper, cloves, black pepper and black cumin on the cancers' risk.

Application of pungent spice including red pepper extract exerted a cell antiproliferative activity against the TE-13 (esophageal squamous cell carcinoma) cell line.

All extracts showed cytotoxic activity, but aqueous extracts of red pepper were found to be more potent than alcoholic extracts.

In the morphological analysis, DAPI staining and DNA fragmentation assay, the aqueous extract of chili pepper at 300 μl/ml. demonstrated maximum cell death and apoptotic cell demise (88%) to occur within 24 hours compared to other pungent spicy extracts.

The finding suggested that herbal Cayenne containing a high amount of capsaicin may be considered a functional food and adjunct therapy for reducing the risk of cancers with no side effects.

Artichoke In the Promotion of Digestive Health

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a herbal remedy for improvement of digestive health, according to studies.

The digestive system is an organ consists of the gastrointestinal tract and other organs associated with digestive functioning including the salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder.

Digestion is a process of breaking down foods into a smaller and smaller portion that can be absorbed and assimilated into the body.

Digestive disorders can be caused by the digestive problem or some underlying diseases, including GERD, IBS,...

The most common symptoms of digestive disorders including bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn. fecal incontinence.and pain in the belly.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of digestive problems, some researchers suggested that the promotion of the Western diet may have a strong implication in the induction of digestive disorders.

Dr. Marit K. Zinöcker, the lead scientist in the investigation of the Western diet and Microbiome wrote, "the Western diet promotes inflammation that arises from both structural and behavioral changes in the resident microbiome".

And, " The environment created in the gut by ultra-processed foods, a hallmark of the Western diet, is an evolutionarily unique selection ground for microbes that can promote diverse forms of inflammatory disease".

The findings clearly explained the negative impact of the Western diet in the alternation of the ratio of gut microbes, leading to digestive disorders in the initiation of chronic diseases.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as liver protective and detoxified agents, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural remedy for the improvement of digestive function examined whether the consumption of artichokes enriched with a probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei strain affects fecal microbiota composition and other symptoms associated with chronic constipation.

The study included 8 volunteers (3M/5F age 40+/-14 y) integrated their normal diet with artichokes (180 gr) enriched with 20 billions of L. paracasei LMGP22043.

According to tested assays, additional artichoke diet exerted a strong effect in the promotion of the colonized by the probiotic strain in all volunteers' gut, after 15 days of feeding.

Injection of artichoke also demonstrated a significant increase of butyric and valeric acids with a decrease of lactic acid, the indications of improvement of gut microbiota.

The diet integrated with artichoke also resolved the constipation symptoms by reducing the fecal beta-glucuronidase activity.

Interestingly, according to the analysis of symptom profile, there was a marked reduction in abdominal distension and a feeling of incomplete evacuation in volunteers with constipation problems.

The results suggested that included artichoke in a diet promotes a healthy digestive system by balancing the ratio of gut microbiota.

In order to reveal more information about artichoke enhanced the function of the gastrointestinal tract, researchers investigated the effects of Jerusalem artichoke inulin (JA) or chicory inulin (CH) in snack bars on composition fecal microbiota, the concentration of fecal SCFA, bowel habit and gastrointestinal symptoms.

45 volunteers were selected to a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study.

After a 7 days run-in period, subjects were randomly assigned to three groups of fifteen subjects each, consuming either snack bars with CH or JA, or snack bars without fructans (placebo); for 7 d (adaptation period), they ingested one snack bar per day (7.7 g fructan/d) and continued for 14 d with two snack bars per day.

At the end of the intervention, consumption of CH or JA improved the ratio of gut microbiota by increasing the counts of good bacterias such as bifidobacteria (+1.2 log10 in 21 d) and decreasing the counts of bad bacteria such as Bacteroides/Prevotella and Clostridium histolyticum/C. lituseburense group in frequency.

Consumption of CH or JA also resulted in mild and moderate flatulence in a few subjects compared to placebo with a slight effected of tool consistency.

Dr. Kleessen B, the lead scientist said, "...adaptation on increased doses of CH or JA in bakery products stimulates the growth of bifidobacteria and may contribute to the suppression of potentially pathogenic bacteria".

Taken altogether, artichoke alone and combined with other herbal remedies may be considered functional remedies for the treatment of the digestive disorder, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Anise in Modulation and Stimulation of Immune Response

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in immunostimulating effects, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

Immunostimulation is a medical term of stimulation of immune response positively.

According to the study of the University of Toyama, in the investigation of the 3 substances (LC1, LC2 and LC3) isolated from a hot water extract of seeds of Pimpinella anisum, application of all 3 lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCs) exerted a significant activities inhibited the expression of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and -2), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and measles virus through stimulating the immune response in protection against virus adsorption to the host cell surface and directly inactivating viruses expression.

Further analysis of these effects, researchers found that the chemical compound enhanced expression of nitric oxide (NO) through iNOS mRNA in reduced nitric oxide synthases and protein expression in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells of immune system found promoted by the NF-κB which is a protein complex that controls transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival against similar function of the virus in overtaken control of the host cells.

Administration of Anise isolated compound also stimulated the immune response production of mRNA expression of cytokines including IL-1β which is considered as a mediator of the inflammatory response in resistance to pathogens and IL-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine in the protection of the host cell during the acute phase of infection caused by the viral invasion.

After considering other con founders, Dr. Lee JB, the lead authors said, " These results suggest that the lignin-carbohydrate-protein complexes from P. anisum possessed potency as functional food ingredients against infectious diseases".

Additionally, in the study of 80 of one-day-old Cobb chicks allocated into four equal groups with control group supplemented with the basal diet, Anise I fed on basal diet containing (0.25 g anise seed powder/kg diet), Anise II fed on basal diet containing (0.50 g anise seed powder/kg diet) and Anise III fed on basal diet containing (0.75 g anise seed powder /kg diet) to examine the Anise growth performance, immunostimulant and antioxidant status by determination of the serum immunoglobulins (IgA, IgM and IgG), interferon-gamma (INF-γ) and interleukins (IL2 and IL-10).
researchers found that groups fed with Anise expressed a significant increase of antioxidant activity through its major chemical compound anethole levels and induced production of immunoglobulins in inhibited pathogens such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses.

Furthermore, injection of anise group also demonstrated increased levels of interferon-gamma ( INF-γ), a dimerized soluble cytokine in inducing and modulating an array of immune responses in antiviral activity.

Moreover, Anise application also improved the production of IL-10, anti-inflammatory cytokines,
interleukin 2 (IL-2), a protein in regulated the activities of white blood cells that are responsible for immunity and enhanced the production of levels of glutathione (GSH), a natural master antioxidant for the body's natural defense system.

Interestingly, in stimulating the immune response against viral invasion, Anise group also displayed significantly reduced levels of muscle Malondialdehyde (MDA), an organic compound used a marker to determine levels of oxidative stress.

In support of the above differentiation, researchers at the Alexandria University conducted a study of Anise immunostimulatory effect on 217 Arbor Acre one day old broiler chicks randomly allotted into 7 groups (31 per each) of mixed sex. Anise seed was supplemented to the basal diet at 0.0 (control), 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 and 1.5 g/kg diet (groups 2-7), respectively and the trail was lasted for 6 weeks and suggested that only Anise supplementation at 0.5 g/kg (group 3) of broiler diet displays a strong enhancement of immune expression through improve blood picture (RBCs counts, WBCs count, HB, and PCV%) in dose-dependent manner and in compared of other concentration of anise supplementation levels and significantly increased activity of lymphocytes with function in eliminated antigen, through many different mechanisms including releasing antibodies (in the case of B cells), cytotoxic granules (cytotoxic T cells) or by signaling to other cells of the immune system (helper T cells) in compared to the control.

Taken together, Anise may be used as a functional herb in the protection of out body against microorganisms invasion through stimulating and modulating the immune response.

Herbal Catnip, The Potential Anti Chronic inflammatory Diseases Remedy

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient in reducing the risk and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, some studies suggested.

Inflammation is a systematic immune response caused by the production of proinflammatory cytokine activated by the white blood cells in the immune system responsible for the first line of defense.

In the early phase of bodily injury and damage, the reaction of the immune system also encompasses a wide range of pathophysiological responses to minimize tissue damage while enhancing the repair process.

Inflammation also can be caused by viruses and bacteria, some of the most common stimuli of inflammation by either entering or destroying the host body cells or producing endotoxins, respectively.

Malfunctioning immunological responses attack the body tissue can incite inappropriate and chronic inflammation.

Believe it or not, tissues die from a lack of oxygen or nutrients can also cause inflammation.

Chronic inflammation in another hand, caused by the immune response that can not kill off all infectious agents in the acute phase of infection.

Some researchers argued that the evolution of the immune system is to kill off all infectious stimuli or pathogens within 3 - 8 weeks, otherwise, the immune system will adapt to their existence, in other words, chronic inflammation.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The plant has been used in herbal medicine as an insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children restlessness and nervousness, fevers, colds and flu, skin irritation stimulates sweating, promote menstruation, etc.

Besides the major constituent of terpenoid nepetalactone, herbal catnip also contains α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc.

On finding an effective anti-inflammatory natural ingredient or whole food with little or side effects, researchers at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University examined herbal Catnip antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities.

A total of 24 male Wister rats weighing 225 ± 25 gm were included in the study, the experimental groups. were randomly injected with essential oil of NP intraperitoneally at the doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg with control rats received equal volume (2 ml/kg) of normal saline.

All the doses of essential oil of herbal Catnip showed a strong antinociceptive activity compared to the control.

The highest dose of 200 mg/kg reduced the pain sensation in the tail-flick (p <0.01), according to the formalin test.

Injection of the dose at 100 and 200 mg/kg significantly reduced the inflammation in tested subjects paw edema.

These results suggested that the natural ingredient of herbal Catnip essential oil may minimize both the acute and chronic forms of nociception and may have a potential role against inflammation.

Furthermore, the study by the Tarbiat Modares University to evaluate the similar effect of Catnip filed a similar result.

Using the tail-flick and formalin test pain models and the paw edema model of inflammation similar to those of the above study in the male Wistar rats, the application of essential oil dose-dependently produced analgesia in the acute pain models, including the tail-flick and the first phase of the formalin test.

In the late phase of the formalin test, as a model of chronic pain, the essential oil significantly reduced the pain-induced behavior.

Injection of essential oil exerted a potent anti-inflammatory effect found in the formalin-induced paw inflammation model and significant reduction of the paw edema in all applied doses.
The efficacy of herbal Catnip essential oil inhibited both the acute pain and chronic pain and inflammation probably were attributed to its interaction with both central and peripheral nervous system.

Taken altogether, Herbal Catnip may be considered an anti-inflammatory herbal medicine for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of chronic inflammatory disease without inducing any side effect.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada, the Potential Anti Cancer Functional Remedy

Cascara sagrada bioactive compound Emodin may process a potential effect as an adjunct therapy for the treatment of various types of cancers, some studies found.

Cancer is the class of medical and chronic diseases associated with the alternation of cell DNA that causes cells to grow disorderly and uncontrollably.

At the early stage, most cancers start on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue or organs. However, after colonizing most parts of the organ, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The exact causes of cancers are unknown, Certain risk factors epidemiologically are found to associate with the early onset of the disease, including aging, tobacco, sun exposure, radiation exposure, chemicals, and other substances, some viruses and bacteria, certain hormones, family history of cancer, alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight.

However, most people who have some of the above risk factors do not develop cancers.

The symptoms of cancers are totally depending to the location, tissue, and organ, Cancers do not induce symptoms until they grow large enough to push on nearby organs, blood vessels, and nerves, that connect to the central nervous system.
The most common and general symptoms include fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue), or weight loss.

Cancers required a lot of energy for growth and survival. In order to steal more energy, some cancers secrete chemical substances that allow the growth of new blood vessels to supply them with more nutrients and fluid.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America,.

The herbal plant's bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support.

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, other compounds of Cascara sagrada include anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

In the study of the anti-cancer activity of Emodin, a major compound isolated from Cascara sagrada, researchers at the Université François-Rabelais de Tours launched an investigation to examine the effect on the adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP)-gated Ca(2+)-permeable channel P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) which is strongly upregulated in many tumors and cancer cells, and has an important role in cancer cell invasion associated with metastases.

Injection of emodin at doses ≤10 µM in cell culture had no or very mild effect on the cell viability on P2X7R. However, at the concentration of 1 and 10 µM emodin inhibited the ATP elicited increases in intracellular Ca(2+) concentration by 35 and 60%.

Furthermore, ATP-induced increase in gelatinolytic activity, in cancer cell invasiveness in vitro and in cell morphology changes were prevented by 1 µM emodin.

Moreover, the in vivo invasiveness of the P2X7R-positive MDA-MB-435s breast cancer cells was also suppressed by 40 and 50% by 1 and 10 µM emodin.

Additionally, in the study to explore a new horizon in the anticancer property of agents with relevance to mitotic arrest, including antimitotic activity of a series of naturally occurring anthracene-derived anthraquinones including anthrone, alizarin (1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone), quinizarin (1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone), Rhein (4,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid), emodin (1,6,8-trihydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone), and aloe-emodin (1,8-dihydroxy-3-hydroxymethyl anthraquinone), researchers found that all tested compound inhibited the mitosis after 3, 6, and 24 h, respectively in a dose-dependent manner.

Emodin at 500 ppm was proved to be the most active compound to arrest the mitosis after 24 h second to the alizarin.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processes high amounts of Emodin may be considered a functional food for prevention and adjunct therapy for the treatment of cancers, pending to further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed on a human.
