Herbal Andrographis, The Male Contraceptive Whole Herb Medicine?

Andrographis paniculata, the forgotten herb showed the ability to influence the male reproductive organ as a contraceptive option contradictively, a renowned institutes study suggested.

Andrographis paniculata, also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, ......

According to the Bharathidasan University, andrographolide, a major chemical constituent of andrographis paniculata affected the process in which spermatozoa are produced from spermatogonial stem cells in the testis by interring the dividing spermatogenic cell lines.

In a 3-month-old male Wistar albino rats at two dose levels, for 48 days, rats fed with andrographolide exerted contraceptive effects by inducing decreased sperm counts, increased in-motile spermatozoa, and several possessed abnormalities.

Dr. Akbarsha MA, the lead researcher said, "the study points to a male reproductive toxic effect of this compound(andrographolide) when used as a therapeutic".

Unfortunately, also in male Wistar albino rats study, orally administering extract of Andrographis paniculata of 0, 20, 200, and 1000 mg/kg of body weight per day, for 65 days prior to mating and 21 days during mating, treated group showed no effect on testosterone levels and fertility indices and sperm count and sperm motility when compared with the control.

Furthermore, in the comparison of Kan Jang--a fixed combination of Andrographis paniculata special extract (SHA-10) and Acanthopanax senticosus with Valeriana officinalis and Panax ginseng, Kan Jang decode exhibited no significant negative effect of Kan Jang on male semen quality and fertility, but rather a increased number of spermatozoids in the whole ejaculate in compared to others herbal treated group.
The conflict results of the above studies may be due to types of research design, small sample size and quality of herbal medicine used....., but regardless of the above conclusions, large sample size and multi centers studies are necessary to resolve this contradiction.

The Effects of Aloe vera gel (AVG) on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOs)

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is defined as endocrinologic diseases caused by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interferes with the function of the normal ovaries as resulting of enlarged ovaries, leading to hormone imbalance( excessive androgen), resulting in male pattern hair development, acne, irregular period or absence of period, weight gain and affecting fertility. It affects over 5% of women population or 1 in 20 women.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The effects
In the view, if certain side effects of several classes of pharmacological agents have been used to manage dyslipidemia in women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOs), some researchers have been studied through the alternative medicine with an aim to find a better treatment with less or no side effects. Aloe vera gel (AVG), has found to be effective in a reduction in plasma triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels, with an increase in HDL cholesterol, reversion of abnormal estrous cyclicity, glucose intolerance, and lipid metabolizing enzyme activities. Others in the study of the same but in comparison with Letrozole showed Aloe vera restored the estrus cyclicity, glucose sensitivity, and steroidogenic activity. Treatment combined with Letrozole prevented the development of the PCO phenotype. These results showed a positive anti-hyperlipidemic effect and may be used in managing PCOS associated metabolic complications and restoring the ovarian steroid status.

The Side effects
1. The high amount of vitamin K may reduce the effectiveness of anticoagulation medicine
2. Causing additive effects for women who are under estrogen replacement therapy or taking the oral contraceptive pill.
3. It may cause stomach upset and diarrhea
4. The herb may induce lupus erythematosus due to its chemical constituent L-canavanine.

Herbal Calendula (Calendula officinalis), May Process the Potency for Chronic Blepharitis

Herbal Calendula may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of chronic blepharitis, some scientists suggested.

Blepharitis is a condition caused by the eye inflammation of the eyelids or parts of the eyelids as a result of the clogging of tiny oil glands located near the base of the eyelashes, affecting people of all ages.

Blepharitis can be classified into 2 types1. Acute blepharitis is referred to eyelid infection by bacterial, viral, or parasitic pathogens.

2. Chronic blepharitis or lid inflammation is caused by staphylococcal, seborrheic, and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) that lasts more than 3 months.

According to researchers, chronic blepharitis is difficult to treat due to persistently low-grade inflammation.

The most common causes of blepharitis are a bacterial infection. However, the condition also can be caused by a skin condition, such as scalp dandruff or rosacea.

If you experience symptoms of itchiness, redness, flaking, and crusting of the eyelids, burning sensation, irritation, tearing, and red eyes, you may have acute blepharitis, please check with your doctor.

Untreated chronic blepharitis can lead to permanent alterations to the eyelid margin or vision loss from superficial keratopathy (abnormality of the cornea), corneal neovascularization, and ulceration.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Chemical ingredients
Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

In the findings of the natural ingredient with potential for the treatment of chronic blepharitis without inducing any adverse effects, Dr. Prozornaia LP and Dr. Brzhevskiĭ VV.launched an investigation to examine the herbal Calendula anti chronic blepharitis activity.

In a total of 110 patients aged from 3 to 42 years old were examined to estimate the efficacy of chronic blepharitis treatment, 50 patients are with chronic blepharitis and dry eye syndrome (DES), 28 are with DES due to computer vision syndrome and 32 are with isolated chronic blepharitis.

All patients received eyelid massage and a complex of hygienic procedures was performed using phytoproducts ("Geltec-Medika", Russia): blepharoshampoo, blepharolotion, blepharogel 1 and 2.

After all the procedures were finished, moist warm pads (with blepharolotion and calendula extraction) were applied on the eyelids in 25 patients.

In compared to massage, moist warm pads treatment exerts a significant effect in the improved efficacy of background therapy in patients with meibomian gland hypofunction but the insignificant effect in patients with excessive meibomian gland secretion.

These results suggested that Herbal Calendula may be effective in the treatment of chronic blepharitis caused by meibomian gland hypofunction if it is used in conjunction with eyelid hygiene.

Herbal Cat' claw, The Herb Which Balances the Levels of Free Radicals and Antioxidants in the Body

Herbal Cat'claw may process a potential effect in balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, some scientists suggested.

Free radicals are atoms, molecules, or ions with unpaired electrons through chemical bonds with other atoms or molecules during a chemical reaction.

They may have positive, negative or zero charges. The unpaired electrons cause radicals to be highly chemically reactive in the human body.

Imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants linking to the expression of oxidative stress has been associated with the onset of chronic illness, including atherosclerosis, inflammatory condition, certain cancers.
In other words, the presence of oxidative stress may be attributed to either the overexpression of free radicals generated by our body by various endogenous systems, exposure to different physiochemical conditions or pathological states or reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes in the human.

In the concerns of free radicals in the expression of oxidative damage to protein and DNA, lipid peroxidation. oxidative damage to DNA, Dr. V. Lobo, the lead researcher. wrote in the study " Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health" "A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function" and " Hence the application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".

The results clearly indicated, if our body can not produce the levels of antioxidants to counter the overexpression of free radicals reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species, intake of antioxidants from the foods, herbs and synthetic sources may be necessary.

Some researchers also suggested that antioxidants from the food and herbal sources have been found to exert a significant effect in stimulating the antioxidants produced by the host tissue.

Cat's claw found in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, is a genus Uncaria, belonging to the family Rubiaceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine over two thousand years as a tonic, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory, and infectious agent, and to treat diarrhea, rheumatic disorders, acne, diabetes, cancer and diseases of the urinary tract, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cat's claw include ajmalicine, akuammigine, campesterol, catechin, carboxyl alkyl esters, chlorogenic acid, cinchonain, corynantheine, corynoxeine, daucosterol, epicatechin, Harman, hirsuteine, hirsutine, iso-pteropodine, etc.

In the aim to reaffirm the tradition use of Cat's claw as an anti-inflammatory disorder functional herbal medicine, researchers at the Albany Medical College, conducted an evaluation to examine the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of alkaloids and flavonols isolated from the herb.

In vitro, application of alkaloids and flavonols isolated from the herb demonstrated the significant anti-inflammatory activity by inhibition of TNF-alpha, the proinflammatory cytokines found in the early phase of infection and nitrite production from RAW 264.7 cells exposed to LPS (50 ng/ml) and in vivo using the indomethacin-induced gastritis model.
The IC50 value for inhibition of TNF-alpha production was significantly (P < 0.01);s higher for Uncaria tomentosa (UT) (14.1 ng/ml) vs Uncaria guianensis (UG).(9.5 ng/ml) compared to alkaloid content of Cat's claw.

Oral pretreatment for 3 d with UT protected against indomethcin-induced gastritis and prevented TNFalpha mRNA expression and apoptosis.

This demonstration reconfirms the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of the herbal medicine

Furthermore, in the study to examine the ability of pteropodine to increase the antioxidant activity in mice induced oxidative stress by administered doxorubicin, researchers found that oxidative stress created by the injection of with 10 mg/kg of doxorubicin.was inhibited by pteropodine (100-600 mg/kg).

The bone marrow cytotoxicity induced by doxorubicin was also corrected by the administration of pteropodine.

In the immune and antioxidant perspective, 600 mg/kg of pteropodine increased 25.8% of the production of lymphocytes over the control value along with a 96-hr assay and exhibited a strong capacity to trap the DPPH-free radical (98.26% with 250 microg/ml).

Finally, in the analysis of the antioxidant properties of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the Uncaria tomentosa bark, researchers showed that
* Both extracts process a high antioxidant capacity of the studied materials in comparison to the other extracts of fruits, vegetables, cereals, and medicinal plants.

* The alcoholic preparations exert higher antioxidant activity and total phenolic compounds compared
Although the alcoholic preparations display a higher antioxidant potential, the highly elevated level of tannins in alcoholic extracts may cause undesirable gastric effects.

Taken altogether, Cat' claw and its extracts processed a strong antioxidant activity may be considered a functional food in the prevention of oxidative stress and combined with conventional medicine for treatment of overexpression of oxidative stress-related diseases.

Herbal Chamomile May Be the Next Generation of Whole Food Medicine for Treatment of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

Herbal Chamomile may be the next generation of whole food medicine of blocking the onset of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, some studies suggested.

Inflammation is a natural and systematic immune response to the body damage and injure. Upon received the information from the central nervous system, macrophages, the largest cells in the immune system stimulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to protect against possible exposure to infectious agents.

The aim of these actions is to minimize the damage and speed up the healing processes. However, if the pro-inflammatory cytokines are overexpressed, they can cause damage to the nearby healthy and formation of the scars to the infected tissue.

Chronic inflammation is the condition when the immune system can not kill all infectious pathogens in the acute phase, leading to persistent low-grade inflammation, judged by a small rise in immune system markers found in blood or tissue.

The longterm low-grade inflammation has been found to trigger autoimmunity in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body tissue in the damage site and other healthy tissue.

Most people with chronic inflammation are experiencing symptoms of body pain, persistent fatigue, and insomnia, psychological issues of depression, anxiety and mood disorders and long-term gastrointestinal discomfort, such as constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux.

If you have some of the symptoms above, please check with your doctor. A blood test of inflammatory markers is necessary to rule out the possibility.

Chamomile is also known as camomile, a common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

In the study to reaffirm the inflammatory effect of chamomile used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation-related disorders, researchers at the Case Western Reserve University conducted an examination of the herbal inhibitory effects on nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, and its potential anti-inflammatory mechanisms using RAW 264.7 macrophages.

In LPS-induced NO production, the application of chamomile significantly blocked the series of proinflammatory cytokine with the function to protect the cell against infection of LPS, namely, the IL-1β, IL-6, and TNFα in RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Furthermore, chamomile caused a reduction in LPS-induced iNOS mRNA and protein expression, a family of primary inflammatory response genes.

In RAW 264.7 macrophages, LPS-induced DNA binding activity of RelA/p65 in the prevention of the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines was significantly inhibited by chamomile.

Moreover, chamomile treatment also inhibited the release of LPS-induced prostaglandin E(2), a bioactive lipid that can elicit a wide range of biological effects associated with inflammation, in RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Interestingly, the anti-inflammatory effect of Chamomile was attributed to the inhibition of COX-2, the proinflammatory enzyme activity by blocking the reduction in LPS-induced COX-2 mRNA and protein expression, without affecting COX-1 expression in the inflammatory response in comparison to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, sulindac.

These results suggested that chamomile processed a mechanism of action similar to those of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammation.

However, due to limitations of the above study, additional data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of chamomile anti-inflammatory diseases possibilities.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana), the Natural Antibiotic Alternative

Herbal Cascara sagrada processed a bioactive compound emodin may have a potential and profound effect on reducing the risk and treatment of bacterial infection, according to studies.

According to the statistic, infectious diseases caused the death of 9.2 million deaths in 2013 worldwide, represented 17% of all deaths.
The bacterial infection is a result of the battle of the immune system against the multiplication of bacteria in some selected tissue or organ by the pathogens after scaping the assault of white blood cells in the first line of immune defense.

Bacterial infection can be caused by the spread through infected person coughing and sneezing and contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces, food, and water.

However, the most common risk factors of bacterial infection are tissue damage or injury. Believe or not, most bacteria tries to enter the body through wound are killed off during the acute phase of infection.

At the early phase, immune not only stimulates the blood vessels constriction to produce palette to cover the wound but also activates the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of the damage with an aim to kill off all the micro-invaders.

The most common conventional medicine for the treatment of bacterial infection is an injection of antibiotics.

Due to the overuse of such medication, some bacteria have development antibiotics resistances, such as Staphylococcus aureus ('golden staph' or MRSA) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are now resistant to benzylpenicillin.

New antibiotics may be effective, however, they can induce some side effects. Please make sure you discuss the adverse effects with your doctor if you are currently taking some antibiotics for the treatment of infection.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America. The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient to treat bacterial infection examined the effects of emodin against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a substantial contributor to morbidity and mortality.

In 17 different strains of the bacterium selected to the study, the combined activity of EM and two antimicrobial agents (AM, OX) against all strains resulted in a fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) ranging from 0.37-0.5 and from 0.37-0.75, respectively.

The effect of EM with AM and OX was found to be synergistic or partially synergistic.

Furthermore, EM reduced the minimum inhibitory concentrations of AM and OX. EM against MRSA infection.

In the comparison of the antibacterial effects of aloe-emodin and aloe and its contents of anthraquinone compounds, researchers evaluated the antibacterial activities of the extracts from the outer leaf of Aloe saponaria Haw, aloin and aloe-emodin against three Gram-negative and two Gram-positive bacteria

Anthraquinone, aloin exhibited higher antibacterial activity [inhibition diameter > (7. 1 +/- 0.15) mm] than Aloe-emodin.

The antibacterial activity of Aloe was attributed to the concentration of anthraquinone, aloin in a dose-dependent manner.

The results clearly suggested that Aloe-emodin exerts a significant antibacterial effect to a lesser extent compared to levels of anthraquinone, aloin.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed a high amount emodin may be considered an alternative antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial infection, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
