Fennel Seed Extracts That Gobble Up Toxins Caused by Medication Toxicity, Scientists Show

Fennel seeds may have the potential to act as liver antitoxins enzymes in removed xenobiotics from our body, some scientists suggested.

Liver cytochrome P450 3A4 (abbreviated CYP3A4) is an important enzyme, mainly found in the liver with function in stimulating the removal of toxins from our body through the oxidation of small foreign organic molecules (xenobiotics).

Acute drug toxicity is a condition characterized by having too much of a drug in the body at once caused by overdoses of a certain medicine.

Otherwise, drug toxicity is a condition of toxin accumulation caused by long-term intake of medicine which has a strong and negative impact on the liver or kidneys enzymes that are responsible for toxin removals.

The signs and symptoms of toxicity differ depending on the medication. However, most common symptoms may include diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, stomach pains, vomiting, and weakness.

Untreated drug toxicity may induce complications of ataxia, muscle twitches, slurred speech, nystagmus, seizures, coma,....... and, in rare cases, heart problems and death.

Dr. ALASDAIR BRECKENRIDGE, in the article " A clinical pharmacologist's view of drug toxicity," wrote, "Our ability to understand the basis of adverse drug reactions has improved progressively, and with it, the ability to prevent their occurrence; one aim of the clinical pharmacologist is to identify patients at special risk" and " With a fair degree of certainty one can also predict that advances in bioinformatics, genomics, and combinatorial chemistry will progressively contribute to clinical toxicology in the future"(6).

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean

The herb or food has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the study to compare the effectiveness of herbal compounds isolated from fennel against toxins that mediated by human liver cytochrome P450 3A4, researchers found that 13 compounds process a strong inhibitory activity(1).
Among these compounds, 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MoP) showed the strongest inhibition of toxins induced by drug interaction with an IC50 value of 18.3 μm and with a mixed type of inhibition(1).

According to the Brescia University Hospital, 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) may be considered an alternative to 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) for photochemotherapy of psoriasis, proven by the study in compared the clinical efficacy and tolerability of 5-MOP (1.2 mg/kg)-UVA versus 8-MOP (0.6 mg/kg)-UVA therapy in 25 patients of skin type III and IV(5).

The University of Toyama conducted an experiment to examine whether methanolic extract of fennel showed a characteristic of mechanism-based inactivation on erythromycin N-demethylation mediated by human liver microsomal cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), suggested, 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) showed the strongest inhibition with an IC50 value of 18.3 microM and a mixed type of inhibition, similar to those of above study.

With the preincubation time of 20 min only, 5-MOP showed preincubation time dependency with the IC50 value decreased from 18.3 microM with a preincubation time of 0 min to 4.6 microM with a preincubation time of 20 min(2).

These results suggested that 5-MOP acts as a human Liver Cytochrome P450 3A4 in inhibition of toxins caused by drug interaction in a time-dependent manner.

Additionally, in the examine the antitoxic effect of 30 sample plants of Indonesia, caused by the injection of xenobiotics, researchers showed that methanol extracts isolated from fennel seed exerted time-dependent inhibition toxins oxidized similarly to those of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and CYP2D6.

In comparing the experimental injection to another plant with the same volume, fennel seeds extract should contain mechanism-based inhibitors on CYP3A4.

Mechanism-based inhibition or suicide inhibition, also known as suicide inactivation is an irreversible form of enzyme inhibition. If you need more information about the definition, please click the link provided by the Evidence-Based Medicine.

Taken together, fennel and fennel seeds extract may be considered as a functional supplement in protect liver detoxed enzymes against overexpression of toxins caused by small foreign organic molecules.

Rapeseed Oil Inhibits The Clusters Associated with Metabolic Syndrome

A dietary pattern is the measurement of the quantity, variety, or combination of different foods and beverages in a diet as well as the frequency of the foods are habitually consumed.

Most common dietary patterns are
* The traditional diet, Wikipedia wrote, "Traditional foods are foods and dishes that are passed through generations or which have been consumed many generations. Traditional foods and dishes are traditional in nature, and may have a historic precedent in a national dish, regional cuisine or local cuisine".

* The Western diet is a standard American diet (SAD) associated with high intakes of red meat, processed meat, pre-packaged and refined foods, fried foods, high-fat dairy products, high salt, and sugar.foods.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The health problems found in the group include too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

In other words, if you have 3 of the conditions in the group, your risk of CVD and diabetes are increased substantially compared to those who have less.

According to the statistics, approximately 30% of people in the US are living with metabolic syndrome.

Believe it or not, among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35% from 1988–1994 to 2007–2012, increasing from 25.3% to 34.2%.

Rapeseed, also known as rape, oilseed rape, is a member of the family Brassicaceae (mustard or cabbage family), cultivated in the suitable climate regions for its oil-rich seed for commercial profits.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention of heart disease, researchers at the University of Applied Sciences investigated the effects of a hypo energetic diet with low energy density (ED) enriched in rapeseed oil-derived n-3 fatty acid α-linolenic acid (ALA), in patients with metabolic syndrome.

The human trial included eighty-one patients with metabolic syndrome randomly assigned to received either rapeseed oil derived high MUFA content and an ALA intake of 3.5 g/d on body weight or olive oil diet rich in MUFA, but with a low ALA content.

According to the results, after a 6-month dietary intervention, the rapeseed oil and olive oil groups showed a significant in reduced body weight and metabolic factors associated with cardiovascular risk.

In other words, intervention groups with rapeseed oil not only significantly decrease the systolic blood pressure, but also reduces total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and insulin levels in patients with metabolic syndrome.

More interestingly, serum triglycerides (TAG) associated with cardiovascular and nonfatty liver disease risk factors were significantly reduced only in the high ALA intake, compared to no effect on the low ALA group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "our dietary food pattern with a low ED and high intakes of MUFA and ALA may be a practical approach for long-term dietary treatment in patients with the metabolic syndrome".

Taken altogether, rapeseed oil may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cinnamon - The Best Whole Herb medicine for Treatment of Menstrual Pain and Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, use in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

Topical use of essential oil extracted from cinnamon may be the next generation whole herb medicine for prevention and treatment of menstrual pain and heavy menstrual bleeding

According to the Eulji University, in the study compared the effect of aromatherapy massage and acetaminophen on menstrual pain in Korean high school girls. the cinnamon treatment group showed a significantly higher reduction of menstrual pain than in the acetaminophen group.

In a randomized, double-blind trial, out of 114, the group received Cinnamon (capsule containing 420 mg Cinnamon, TDS, n= 38) in 24 h significantly reduced the severity and duration of pain during menstruation and menstrual bleeding.

In primary dysmenorrhea, cinnamon expressed significantly over the reduction of pain, menstrual bleeding, nausea, and vomiting with primary dysmenorrhea without side effects.

Dr. Marzouk TM., the lead author at the Mansoura University said, " ... aromatherapy abdominal massage once daily for seven days prior to menstruation using the essential oils (cinnamon....) is effective in alleviating menstrual pain, its duration, and excessive menstrual bleeding...." and "Aromatherapy can be provided as a nonpharmacological pain relief measure and as a part of nursing care given to girls suffering from dysmenorrhea, or excessive menstrual bleeding".

Further study of the effect of cinnamon extract on symptoms of dysmenorrhea and contractility in some smooth muscles, Dr. Alotaibi M. suggested, cinnamon may be used to alleviate menstrual pain associated with dysmenorrhoea or prevent unwanted uterine activity in early pregnancy.

Indeed, Cinnamon may be the effective whole herb medicine used for the treatment of menstrual pain. Intake of cinnamon should be taken with care as toxicity is found in case of overdoses.

Angelica Sinensis Destroys the Glioma Cells in Vitro and in Vivo

A glioma is a type of brain and spinal cord tumor characterized by the alternation of DNA of the glial cells.

Believe it or not, gliomas have been found accounting for 30 percent of all brain tumors and central nervous system tumors, and 80 percent of all malignant brain tumors.

Glioma can be classified into 3 types, including
* Astrocytomas are found in glial cells, star-shaped brain cells in the cerebrum called astrocytes. Most astrocytomas are localized.

* Ependymomas are cancers that grow in your brain or any part of the spine, including your neck and upper and lower back starting from the ependymal cells in the middle of your spinal cord and fluid-filled spaces in your brain.

* Oligodendrogliomas are cancers that begin on the oligodendrocytes of the brain or from a glial precursor cell.

Primary glioblastoma is considered the most aggressive cancer that begins within the brain. Cancer may arise de novo, meaning they begin as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.

According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.

Due to the rapid growth of the tumor, patients diagnosed with primary glioblastoma experience brain swelling and increased brain pressure, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and severe headaches and localized symptoms depending on the location of the tumor.

Radiation and chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for patients with glioblastoma particularly, in a tumor that cannot be removed with surgery.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases, scientists examined the inhibitory effects of Angelica polysaccharides (APs), bioactive constituents of Angelica on a glioma cell line.

Angelica or Dang Gui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to tested analysis both in vitro and in vivo models,
* APs exerted a significant inhibition of the growth and proliferation of U251 cells and induced their apoptosis.

* APs effectively reduced the expression of several cell cycle regulators such as cyclins D1, B, and E in the induction of cell cycle division of the tested cell line.

* APs also inhibited the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and increased the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins Bax and cleaved-caspase-3.

* Most importantly, APs inhibited the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling pathway and stimulated the expression of E-cadherin, associated with the inhibition of cell growth.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " the results indicate that APs attenuate the tumorigenicity of glioma cells and promote their apoptosis by suppressing the TGF-β signaling pathway".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a neuroprotective remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fennel, The Potent Neurons Protective and Memory Enhancing Functional Food

Intake of fennel daily and regularly may have a profound and positive effect in enhancing memory, some scientists suggested.

The human brain consists of billions of neurons, some of them were given a special function in storing the event from the past.

In other words, there is a faculty in the human brain in which the mind stores and remembers information.

There are 2 types of memory. The short-term memory (STM) is a temporary storage system that processes the working memory, reacted by taking into information that already was happened in the past.

Long-term memories are information collected by the brain that can last for just a few days, or years. Some long-term memories are more important than others.

Memory loss occurs often in the aging population. It is a normal degeneration, however, we can’t take action to slow it down a little.

Some researchers suggested that change of lifestyle, such as meditation and eating habits such as reduced intake of red meat which has been found to associate with lipid peroxidation can improve or slow down the risk of memory loss.

Dr. Xian Jiang, the lead author in the evaluation of the consumption of fruit and vegetables in the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, wrote, "The meta-analysis showed that increased consumption of fruit and vegetables was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia (the leading cause of memory loss)".

Risks of cognitive impairment and dementia-inducing memory loss were reduced by approximately 13% for an increment of 100 g per day of fruit and vegetable consumption.

A study that examines the fennel enhancing memory activity in an orogastric tube suggested that administration at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight, fennel displays a significant effect in enhancing short and long-term memory.

Scientists at the research center, after taking into account all factors, recommended that adding a portion of fennel in the daily diet may improve memory in all aspects.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine, like warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

According to the observation of urinary levels of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), daily administration of F. Vulgare extract (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight) 1 h prior to the induction of stress, exerted a significantly altered the stress in reducing central nervous system in the expression of stress hormone production from 395.79 to 347.12, 311.21 and 258.86 μg/kg, receptively.
In comparison to ascorbic acid, fennel extracts treated groups also exhibited potent antioxidant effect by inhibiting lipid peroxidation in both tested rats liver and brain homogenates to a greater extent.

These results suggested that fennel extract may also improve brain function by reduced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the induction of neuron cells cytotoxicity and apoptosis in facilitating plagues accumulation in the neurons, the process has long been found to decrease long-term memory recalled.

In the same period, memory deficits induced by scopolamine (1mg/kg, i.p.) in rats was significantly reversed by F. Vulgare dose-dependently.

Dr. A. E. Bawazirand, the lead author of the research paper said, "F. vulgare may be useful in the management of stress and stress-related disorders on account of its multiple actions such as anti-stress, memory-enhancing and antioxidant effects".

Further analysis of the enhanced memory and intelligence of F. vulgaris, an ayurvedic Rasayana (mixture) served to children as part of their food in Indian traditional medicine, scientists found that ingestion of whole plant extract at doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg exhibits a strong memory-enhancing effect against scopolamine-induced amnesic rats.

Observed by conditioned avoidance response (CAR) technique, group treated with fennel extract of rats through gradually increased administration up to 95% over 7 to 12 days demonstrated a significant increase of percent avoidance due to information feedback from previous experience, compared to control group.

Additionally, fennel extracts showed strong linearly and independently in memory recalled from tested rats.

As Animals received 200 mg/kg body weight of the extract took ten days, while groups treated with 100 and 50 mg/kg doses of the extract required eleven and twelve days, respectively, to reach the point of acquisition.

Importantly, during the period of the experiment, treated rats demonstrated significantly less amnesia, a partial or total loss of memory induced by scopolamine in comparison to the nontreatment group.

Continuously, fennel treatment also produced better retention and recovery of memory deficits in a dose-dependent manner than the vehicle-treated animals.

Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, the lead scientist said, "Recovery from scopolamine-induced amnesia in the extract-treated groups took 3–5 days when compared to normal (control) group which took over 6 days".

Some researchers suggested that the neuro memory enhancement of fennel extracts may be attributed by the effective influence as a sedative and the herbal protective effects in the maintenance of brain tissue through directly increase the total content of neurotransmitters in all the tested regions.

Finally, "Fennel is likely to be safe for use as a moderator and enhancer of the functions of the central nervous system by increasing the total content of neurotransmitters and also can be a protection against stress and stress-related diseases such as memory loss, because it contains high amounts of antioxidants", according to the study of "Foeniculum vulgare Mill: A Review of Its Botany, Phytochemistry, Pharmacology, Contemporary Application, and Toxicology" suggestion.

Taking together, Fennel whole plant and whole plant extracts may be considered as a function in improved memory in all aspects.

These results also reaffirmed the use of fennel as a brain enhancer product by traditional herbal medicine.

Herbal Bilberry Protects the Neurons Against Memory Impairment in Vivo

Memory impairment is a condition of partial or complete loss of memory, depending on the quality of the neuron that has been affected.

Memory impairment other than the physical impact is a progressive disease that can lead to permanent loss of memory due to the gradual loss of neurons in the brain.

The most common risk factors associated with memory loss in the general population are long-term use of certain medications, excessive alcohol drinking, smoking, drug abuse, depression, nutrient deficiency, stroke, and daily stress.

In elderly or aging-induced memory loss are associated with the deterioration of a region of the brain involved in the formation and retrieval of memories, the hippocampus, and the reduced hormones and protein that protect and repair brain cells and stimulate neural growth.

However, some researchers suggested the rise of memory impairment in the elderly probably is correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Scott E. Kanoski, the lead scientist in the review the risk cognitive impairment in the Western diet consumption wrote, "Intake of saturated fats and simple carbohydrates, two of the primary components of a modern Western diet, is linked with the development of obesity and Alzheimer's Disease".

And, "Western diet intake is associated with cognitive impairment, with a specific emphasis on learning and memory functions that are dependent on the integrity of the hippocampus".

The results clearly stated if you are a Western diet follower, you are at a higher risk of memory impairment compared to healthy diet individuals.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of memory impairment researchers investigated the effects of Vaccinium uliginosum L. (bilberry) on the learning and memory impairments induced by amyloid-β protein (AβP) 1-42.

The evaluation included selected ICR Swiss mice divided randomly into 4 groups: the control (Aβ40-1A), control with 5% bilberry group (Aβ40-1B), amyloid β protein 1-42 treated group (Aβ1-42A), and Aβ1-42 with 5% bilberry group (Aβ1-42B).

According to the tested assays, bilberry added groups showed to decrease the finding time of hidden platform, compared to those of escape latencies of AβP to that of Aβ40-1.

Furthermore, the bilberry added Aβ1-42B group also showed a significant (P<0.05) increase of probe crossing frequency compared to Aβ1-42A.
In the passive avoidance test, bilberry significantly (P<0.05) increased the time of staying in the lighted area compared to AD control.

These results suggested that bilberry improved memory and learning capability in chemically induced Alzheimer's disease in experimental animal models.

In the incidence of degenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD), rats consumed approximately 3.2 mg kg(-1)day (oral), of the anthocyanins significantly enhanced short-term memory, but not long-term memory in the inhibitory avoidance task.

Moreover, injection of approximately 3.2 mg kg(-1)day (oral), of the anthocyanins also induced an increase in the number of crossings in the first exposure to the open field.

However, in the comparison of the radial maze and elevated plus-maze, lyophilized berries (blueberry, bilberry) improved working memory in the radial maze, with significant differences observed during sessions 1-2 and 4, compared to no effects in the elevated plus-maze task.

The findings strongly indicated the positive effects of administration of lyophilized Vaccinium berries (blueberry, bilberry) and anthocyanin in the prevention of memory deficits related to AD.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of memory impairment, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Chaste Tree Berry, the Best Anti Inflammatory Whole Food

Chaste tree berry may process a strong anti-inflammatory effect in reduced symptoms of reddened, swollen, hot caused by an overreaction of immunity, a study suggested.

Inflammatory activity is an action of the immune system taken to protect the body against injury and infection.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

According to Kyung Hee University, casticin a major compound found from Vitex species at doses of 1, 2, and 10mg/kg casticin via an i.p. injection to C57BL/6 mice, expressed a significant effect in inhibition of the numbers of cells of neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes through reduced levels of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, as shown in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and lung histological analysis.

Furthermore, the tested compound also displayed a remarkably decreased the peribronchial thickening or bronchial wall thickening and perivascular inflammatory cells and the epithelium thickness in mice with lung inflammation, particular to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

In some newly found chemical compound isolated from Chaste tree berry, namely a phenylindene-type lignan, vitexdoin F (1), and three phenylnaphthalene-type lignans, vitexdoins G, H and I (2-4) in the testing of anti inflammatory activities, Compound 1 showed a significant inhibition on the nitric oxide (NO) production (IC50 4.17 μg/mL) in induced inflammation.

Other, in the evaluation of the anti-arthritic activity of the extract of V. negundo seeds (EVNS) using Freund's complete adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis (AA) in rat model, oral administrated rats showed elevated anti-inflammatory activities through suppressed paw edema, decreased the arthritis score, spleen index, and reversed the weight loss.

In fact, the efficacy of extract of Chaste tree berry in reduced inflammation may be resulted of suppressed expression of the protein in regulated pro-inflammatory cytokines in various inflammatory pathways.

Taking together, phytochemical compounds found in Chaste tree berry may exhibit strong anti-inflammatory properties through ameliorated the protein involved the expression of proinflammatory
cytokines.
