Herbal Angelica Sinensis, A Potential Anti Weight Gain Remedy

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, including over 650 million were obese worldwide.

Visceral fat obesity is associated with 90% of patients with ischemic heart disease. In obese, accumulation of visceral fat is predominant in the intra-abdominal cavity.

Visceral fat is a layer of fat that surrounds the organs. Overexpression of visceral fat has been found to promote insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation.

However, in non-obese subjects, visceral fat accumulation is correlated with glucose intolerance, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension.

Obesity rates have increased for all age groups in the US over the last several decades, coincidently with the periods that promoted the Western diet.

Weight gain is an increase in body weight associated with some parameters, including increased muscle mass, fat deposits, excess fluids such as water, or other factors.

However, weight gain has also been found to be induced by serious medical conditions.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of obesity, scientists examined the radix Angelica sinensis (RAS) suppressed body weight by altering the expression of the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene in an animal model.
Angelica or Dang Gui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to tested analysis in mice fed with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity,
* 36 differentially-expressed genes (DEGs) associated with the increased onset of obesity were found in adipose tissues from the RAS supplementation group (DH) and control group (HC).

* Six out of the 36 DEGs identified to be involved in lipid metabolism, with the APOA2 gene a potential anti-obesogenic influence were inhibited by the injection of RAS compared to control.

In other words, RAS supplementation in HFD-induced obese mice was associated with an anti-obesogenic global transcriptomic response.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This study provides insight into potential applications of RAS in obesity therapy".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of weight gain in obese, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Onset of Colitis

Colitis is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

Most cases of colitis are caused by infection, such as bacteria like C. difficile, viruses, and parasites, and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC).

However, according to the study by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, depending on the causes, colitis can be classified into microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis.

Most common symptoms of colitis are abdominal pain and diarrhea, bleeding per rectum, distention with bloody diarrhea, abdominal bloating and flatulence, and changes in bowel habits.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of elevated liver enzymes, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, severe peripheral arthralgias, and chronic watery diarrhea.

Believe it or not, fifty-five percent of patients stated that UC symptoms over the past year had affected their quality of life, while physicians and nurses estimated that 35% to 37% of patients would have a reduced quality of life.

Conventionally, treatments of colitis are total depending on the type and severity of the condition. For example, in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Self-care at home through home tele-management, Web-guided therapy and pain management are the most common approach accompanied by biological therapy, if necessary.

Some researchers suggested, the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the leading causes of colitis in patients with IBD.

Dr. Jimmy K. Limdi wrote, "The parallelism between “westernization” and particularly high dietary intakes of total fat (particularly animal fats, ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), milk fats), refined sugars, meat and lower intakes of fruit and vegetables, implicates diet in the great risk of developing IBD".

And, "Diet may influence intestinal inflammation through several biologically plausible mechanisms including dietary antigen presentation, alterations in the gut microbiome, the mucosal immune system and epithelial barrier function among others".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry is cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine for the treatment of wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of IBD, researchers examined the effects of cranberry products on preventing dextran sulfate sodium-induced murine colitis.

According to the tested differentiation, both cranberry extract and dried cranberries-fed groups had significant activity against the disease index.

However, dried cranberries were more effective in preventing colitis compared to that of cranberry extract.

Moreover, both cranberry application also showed a significant effect on preventing the shortening of colon length,

Biomarkers associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as colonic myeloperoxidase activity were attenuated in animals fed dried cranberries compared to the controls.

Additionally, dried cranberries also inhibited much better results against the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines caused by the injection of dextran sulfate sodium, compared to the controls.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "The current report suggests that cranberries can be applied to prevent and reduce the symptoms of IBD".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colitis in IBD patients, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Chaste tree berry May Process Anti-Nociceptive in PMS

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Premenstrual syndrome is a faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it affects a women's physical and emotional state and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation.
Anti nociceptive effect is the term used to indicate the process in blocking the detection of a painful stimulation by sensory neurons.

Chaste tree berry may have a potential effect in reduced pain associated to symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, a renowned institute study suggested.

In an acetic-acid-induced writhing and metoclopramide-dihydrochloride-induced hyperprolactinemia mice study, mice treated with Chaste tree berry factions showed a significantly effective in expression of anti-nociceptive and anti-hyperprolactinemia activities.

The study also found that the fraction extracted from the herb also exerted anti-nociceptive activity in a dose-dependent manner (10-50 mg/kg body wt., i.g.).

Dr. Hu Y, the lead researcher in the study said, "Our results indicate that the presence of flavonoids such as Casticin in this plant may be responsible for the (anti-nociceptive and anti-hyperprolactinemia) activity effects. Casticin has potent analgesic and anti-hyperprolactinaemia properties, is likely to be one of the active components of Fructus Viticis, and may have a role in treating PMS (premenstrual syndrome)".

Further study in support of above differentiation also insisted that the 80% ethanol extract isolated from the herbal medicine showed the highest anti-nociceptive activity in acetic acid-induced writhing test in ICR mice in comparison with other factions. The study also indicated that the anti-nociceptive activity is mediated through inhibition of pro-inflammatory activity rather than through opioid receptors.

The evaluation of petroleum ether fraction (PEF) from the aqueous ethanol extract of Chaste tree berry at doses of 12, 24, and 48 mg/kg body weight, in nociceptive mouse models induced by intraperitoneal acetic acid and sub-plantar formalin injections and on thermal nociception in the hot-plate test, produced significant dose-related inhibitions on chemical nociception, probably due to partially mediated by its anti-inflammatory activity.

Taking together, the anti-nociceptive effect of Chaste tree berry should be beneficiary in reduced symptoms and treatment of women with premenstrual syndrome and improved quality of social life.
A large amount of intake of herbal medicine can be prescribed by related field specialists, including Chaste tree berry.

Herbal Turmeric Maybe A Potential and Natural Remedy for the Treatment of Crohn's disease, Studies Show

Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease caused by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

The exact cause of Crohn's disease is not identified. However, some researchers suggested that people with the compromised immune system and genetic preposition are prone to the disease onset compared to people who do not

The most common symptoms of Crohn's disease are abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition.

If you are experiencing symptoms of severe abdominal pain accompanied by blood in the stool and persistent diarrhea, please check with your doctor right the way.

Risk factors of Crohn's disease include aging, family and personal history, ethnicity, smoking, and long-term use of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
.
Out of many risk factors that cause the onset of the condition, some researchers suggested that your risk of Crohn's disease is depending on where you live.

Dr. Pascal Michel wrote, "Crohn's disease (CD) is clinically expressed as a chronic affection of the gastrointestinal tract currently known to have a multifactorial etiology involving a complex pathophysiological host response modulated by genetic susceptibilities, demographic determinants, and environmental factors. With more than 20 cases per 100,000 person-years, the province of Quebec, Canada is among regions of the world with the highest reported occurrence of CD in relation to other places where comparable estimates are available".

And, "These findings suggest that known populational and regional factors derived through census information only explain a limited fraction of the geographical variation of CD incidence and lead to speculate that the effects of these factors may be incompletely captured (imperfect construction of proxy variables) or that other important factors remain unmeasured".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), researchers at the Grand Valley State University compared the effects of Remicade to curcumin for the treatment of the condition.

The review study includes the search in electronic databases (ProQuest Medical Library, CINAHL Complete, and PUBMED) to locate and identify articles to meet a predetermined set of inclusion criteria, including articles published after 2007 in human participants 18 years or older.

Compared to Remicade in reducing TNF-a, the protein associated with inflammation in adults with CD, curcumin induced a 55 points to mean reduction in the Crohn's Disease Activity Index, reduced the expression of IL-1 and levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), associated with elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines in the colon, particularly in the reduced levels of TNF-a and PPMTase involved in the improvement of colorectal cancer outcomes.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "...Preliminary data would suggest using both would reduce LOR. Curcumin, even by itself, was found to be a cheap and safe way to reduce CD symptoms and inflammatory markers"

Furthermore, according to the study conducted by the Medical School of Marília in the search for articles associating curcuminoids and CD and UC on the database of MEDLINE-PubMed, curcumin demonstrated an intestinal protective effect on reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting the migration of neutrophils and inducible nitric oxide synthase in the intestine.

Moreover, curcumin also improved micro and macroscopic lesions in the gut, prevented apoptosis of intestinal cells, and induced the restoration of immune reaction.

Dr. Cunha Neto F, after taking into account of co and confounders wrote, "The use of curcumin is cheap, efficient and associated with no side effects, and may become an alternative to the IBD treatment".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Sinensis May Induce Weight Loss in Obesity, Researchers Find

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.

The most common causes of obesity are associated with
* An increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in saturated and trans fat, processed foods, and red meat.

* An increase in physical inactivity.

That leads to the accumulation of visceral fat in the body.

Visceral fat in obesity is associated with 90% of patients with ischemic heart disease.

The WHO in the explanation of the causes of obesity wrote, "Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes associated with the development and lack of supportive policies in sectors such as health, agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, food processing, distribution, marketing, and education".

Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing's syndrome,..., genetic preposition and use of certain medications that can cause weight gain or water retention, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants or some seizure medications, also increases the risk of overweight and obesity.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention of overweight, scientists examined the root of Angelica sinensis (RAS) supplementation effects on FTO gene expression and methylation status in body weight on an animal model,

According to tested analysis, of high-fat-diet (HFD) induced obese female mouse that was divided into groups according to RAS dosage in the diet as follows: normal diet, HFD diet (HC), HFD with low-dosage RAS (DL), HFD with medium-dosage RAS (DM), and HFD with high-dosage RAS (DH). After RAS supplementation for 4 weeks,
* Bodyweight suppression and FTO expression associated with reduced weight in DH mice were significantly higher compared to HC mice and no significant change in FTO expression was detected between DM and DL mice or in their offspring.

* Furthermore, CpG island (the regions with a high frequency of CpG sites) in the FTO promoter was hypermethylated up to 95.44% in the HC group, 91.67% in the DH group, and 90.00% in the normal diet group.

* Most importantly, the adipocyte expression in the DH group was smaller than those in the HC group.

These results strongly suggested that RAS may have a potential role in the inhibition of obesity.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "RAS could ameliorate obesity-induced by HFD and that the molecular mechanism might be associated with the expression of the FTO gene".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) Promotes Skin Health

Skin, a large external organ in the human body is the outer layer, with a total area of about 20 square feet which protects the internal organs, bones, and tissues against damage.

The skin processes 3 main layers
* Epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin providing a barrier against infection from environmental pathogens. The outer layers also regulate the amount of water released from the body through transepidermal water loss.

* Dermis is the second layer of skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures.

* The bottom layer is the subcutaneous fat which has been found to process the protective effect against the dangers of visceral fat.

Skin inflammation is a condition that occurs when your immune system responds to a stimulus or triggers inflammation on the skin.
Inflammation is a natural process of the immune system which tries to protect our body against the invasion of stimuli and pathogens.

This process has been found to involve several stages after the bodily injury caused by physical impact or internal damage.

In the acute phase of infection, the white blood cells of the first line of immune defense stimulate to the production of blood coagulation to cover the wound and activate the protein associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off the invaders before they can enter the body.

However, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines can lead to damage and death of the healthy cells, causing irreversible scars as in liver hepatitis infection.

Chronic inflammation (CI) is a result in which the immune system can not destroy the invasive pathogens in the acute phase of infection within 3- 8 weeks, leading to the immune adaptation of the new change in facilitating low-grade inflammatory diseases, including arthritis and diabetes.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of skin disease, researchers examined the effect of tussilagonone (TGN), a sesquiterpene compound isolated from T. farfara anti-inflammatory activity.

In RAW 264.7 cells, based on the tested analysis, administration of TGN enhanced the HO-1 expression associated with reducing inflammatory stress, oxidative stress, and ER stress and nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), associated with the antioxidant defense in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Furthermore, TGN also suppressed the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) by reducing the mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines.

In vivo, TGN also reduced iNOS and COX-2 expression in a mouse model skin inflammation induced by the injection of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA).

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these findings suggest an important role for TGN-induced HO-1 activation in regulating inflammatory responses.".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the improvement of skin conditions caused by inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, the Anti-Obesity Functional Remedy

Obesity is a chronic and medical condition associated with excessive fat accumulation over time.

According to the BMI index, a person is considered overweight, if he/she has a BMI between 25 to 29.9 kg/m2. A BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more is an indication of obesity.
In other words, obesity is a progressive chronic disease characterized by abnormal fat accumulation in the body tissues that may impair health.

Similar to other chronic medical conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or high blood pressure, obesity has recently become a serious health problem in the US as nearly 35% of Americans are obese accompanied by a similar percentage of overweight adults.

Epidemiologically, obesity does not only have serious effects on physical and psychological health but also has a strongly negative impact on the patient's quality of life.

Today, the widespread obesity in the US population has caused a significant economic impact on the U.S. health care system, including direct and indirect costs.

The Milken Institute wrote, "The burden of obesity, and the chronic diseases for which it is a contributing factor, has reached record economic heights. In 2016, chronic diseases driven by the risk factor of obesity and overweight accounted for $480.7 billion in direct health care costs in the U.S., with an additional $1.24 trillion in indirect costs due to lost economic productivity. The total cost of chronic diseases due to obesity and overweight was $1.72 trillion — equivalent to 9.3 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). Obesity as a risk factor is by far the greatest contributor to the burden of chronic diseases in the U.S., accounting for 47.1 percent of the total cost of chronic diseases nationwide".

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

In the concern of the rise of obese incidence in the world, researchers examined the phytotherapeutic protein stem bromelain (SBM) anti-obesity activity.

In the cellular levels, SBM irreversibly inhibited 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation in the expression of the obese gene product (leptin) in white adipose and induced apoptosis and lipolysis in mature adipocytes.

At the molecular level, SBM suppressed adipogenesis by inhibiting gene expression of PPARγ in developing obesity.

Furthermore, SBM also reduced the secretion of adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (ap2) associated with obese glucose and lipid metabolism and fatty acid synthase (FAS) involved food intake and body weight.

Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) which leads to increased lipid partitioning to other tissues, insulin resistance, and obesity, and gene CD36 CD36 associated with a number of metabolic pathways with relevance to obesity and enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) involved the biosynthesis and metabolism of fatty acids also inhibited by the injection of SBM.

Moreover, SBM was found to augment the expression of TNFα(tumor necrosis factor-alpha) -induced lipolysis and apoptosis in mature adipocytes, another indication of anti-obesity properties.

Where TNFα(tumor necrosis factor-alpha) has been proposed as a link between obesity and insulin resistance.

The results strongly supported the use of SBM for the prevention of obesity in an animal model.

Additionally, according to the study led by the University of British Columbia, bromelain from papaya and pineapple may be used to control obesity and obese complications such as hypertension, diabetes.

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of neurodegeneration, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
