In the study to evaluate the efficacy of fennel seed methanolic extract (FSME) for its antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antitumor activities and for its capacity to serve as a nontoxic radioprotector in Swiss albino mice through injection of FSME, 100 mg/kg intraperitoneally into mice bearing EAC before exposed to three 2-Gy doses of gamma irradiation, researchers found at after 30 days, the application exerted a strong effect at the C50 (mean standard deviation 50% inhibitory concentrations) at a dose of 50 μg/mL for the MCF7 breast cancer cell line and 48 μg/mL for the Hepg-2 liver cancer cell line.



The treatment group also displayed a decreased level of MDA and improved natural antioxidants produced by the tissues of the host compared to the elevation of MDA and significantly reduced levels of catalase and GSH contents.


These results suggested that fennel seed methanolic extract (FSME) inhibited the overproduction of ROS caused by ingestion of doses of gamma irradiation through its anioxidants and enhanced antioxidants production of the mice tissue via the ratio of ROS and Antioxidants.


In other words, application of the fennel extract may have a potential in

* Reduced oxidative stress and protected mouse cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen species.

* Improved natural antioxidants and the oxidative stability of fatty foods during storage.

* Exhibited an antitumor effect by modulating lipid peroxidation and augmenting the antioxidant defense system in EAC-bearing mice with or without exposure to radiation.

* Intratumoral microvessel density was decreased in PC3 tumors treated with all five supplements but only in CWR22R tumors treated with HF.

Dr. Ng SS, the lead author said, "herbal supplements containing the aforementioned extracts inhibit the growth of prostate tumor xenografts, possibly in part by antiangiogenic mechanisms".


The above differentiation was supported by the Quaid-i-Azam University in the analysis of the antibacterial potential of some medicinal plants against multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens and anticancer effect against MCF-7 cell line.

Ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia without inducing side effects, some scientists found.

The double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 70 type 2 diabetic patients allocated randomly into the ginger group and control group.

The treatment group consumed 1600 mg ginger versus 1600 mg wheat flour consumed by the placebo daily for 12 weeks.

At the end of the trial, researchers showed that the ginger treatment group exerts a significantly reduced fasting plasma glucose, HbA1C, insulin resistance, HOMA, triglyceride, total cholesterol, CRP, and PGE₂, compared to placebo group.

However, there were no significant differences in HDL, LD, and TNFα between two groups.

These results clearly suggested ginger has a strong effect in improving all parameters associated with diabetic symptoms.


Dr. Arablou T in the final report said, "Ginger improved insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profile, and reduced CRP and PGE₂ in type 2 diabetic patients".


Other researchers in the concern of oxidative stress in the development and progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN)launched an investigation to examine the potential protective effect of ginger (Zingiber officinale) rhizome extract on hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.


Diabetes rats selected to the study were given 400 or 800 mg/kg/day Z. officinale extract for six weeks orally.


Treatment with Z. officinale not only improved all diabetic symptoms but also ameliorated hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and kidney function.


In addition, Z. officinale minimized the histological alterations in the kidney of diabetic rats

The evidence indicated Z. officinale extract significantly attenuated oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis, and enhanced antioxidant defenses in the diabetic kidney.


Taken all together, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of abnormally high blood cholesterol with no side effects.

Ginger, the Potent Free radical Scavenging activities

Ginger may have a potential effect in reducing oxidative stress by inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals as scavengers, some studies suggested.

Free radical is an unstable molecule with an unpaired electron in the outer ring of the atom. In order for them to become stable, free radicals are actively donated or steal an electron from the stable molecules.

Once started, the chain of domino's effect cannot be stopped until the outer ring of the electron is paired or inhibited by the antioxidant.

Free radical scavengers are antioxidants that inhibit oxidation.

There are 2 types of antioxidants in the body including the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and dietary sources of antioxidant intake by the host.

Oxidative stress is the expression of the imbalance of the levels of the free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress can either be caused by overexpression of free radicals or low levels of antioxidant enzymes.

A prolonged period of oxidative stress can damage the body tissue, alternated the immune function and cells DNA, leading to the etiology of many chronic health problems including cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, and cancer.

There are many causes of overexpression of free radicals, some researchers suggested that fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, air pollutants, and many more are contributed to the onset of the condition.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On finding the chemical constituents that constitute the free radical scavenger activity of ginger, a research team at the University of Mysore analyzed the chemical composition and antioxidant activity (in aqueous and solvent extracts) of Ginger root (Zingiber officinale).

During the experiment, application of ethanol, methanol, acetone, 80% methanol, and 80% ethanolic extracts to determine free radical scavenging activity, suggesting that the order of antioxidant activity by reducing power and free radical scavenging activity by DPPH was 80% methanolic > 80%ethanolic > methanolic > ethanolic > 30°C water >100°C water > acetonic extract.

These results suggested that ginger efficacy in the inhibition of the free radicals was not attributed to a single ingredient but all members of the antioxidant family.

In the investigation of the free radical scavenger activity of 4 essential oils of young and mature rhizomes, air-dried and steamed rhizomes, and seed rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Roscoe (ginger), researchers found
* All prepared ginger essential oils, showed a significant free radical scavenger property

* Essential oil from the seed and air-dried rhizomes demonstrated the highest anti-free radical activity compared to others preparation.

* Essential oil from the seed and air-dried rhizomes also are the better free radical scavenger agents, compared to ginger oleoresins obtained by ethanol and hypercritical carbon dioxide extraction and essential oils of 5 other plants in the family Zingiberaceae.

* [6]-shogaol, the bioactive compound isolated from the ginger was most active against filament formation and growth of C. Albicans, followed by citral and [6]-gingerol.

An additional examination also indicated that ginger oleoresin, and especially that obtained by ethanol extraction, with a high [6]-gingerol content exhibited potent scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals in comparison to essential oils of ginger and other Zingiberaceae plants.

In support of the above differentiation, researchers at the North China Coal Medical College, in the report of "[Scavenging effects of ginger on superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical]" wrote,
"Ginger can significantly scavenge O2-. in hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase system and. OH in ultraviolet exposure of H2O2 system". and "The scavenging effects of ginger on O2-. and. OH may contribute to explaining some of the pharmacological mechanisms of this drug".

Taken altogether, ginger with the abundant bioactive compound may be considered a free radical scavenger functional food for preventing overexpression of free radical in the initiation of a chain reaction

Increased expression of serum nitric oxide (NO) and kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) is an indicator of severed oxidative stress caused by an imbalanced ratio of ROS and antioxidants in the host.


* Gentamicin groups treated with fennel powder, extract and oil demonstrated an improved level of urea and uric acid in comparison to control (+ve) and displayed an improvement of antioxidant enzymes as the increase of serum superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, and glutathione transferase (GST) and decrease of serum NO in compared to control (+ve) group.


These results addressed the important antioxidant effect of fennel extracts. Applications not only inhibited the levels of free radical and theirs' chain reactive activities but also stimulated the production of antioxidants found in the host tissue.


* Moreover, the group treated with fennel oil restore the normal values of kidney antioxidant enzymes compared with a normal group and other treatment groups.


Dr. Soheir Ahamed Al-Masri, the lead author, after taking into account other co and confounders said, "fennel powder, extract, and oil have a potent antioxidant and ameliorate in rats gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in rats".


Clearly, fennel oil exhibited the greatest effect in stimulated kidney function in detox the body toxins through increased secretion of urine in comparison to another experimental group.

Additionally,  compared to Marrubium extract in reduced hypertension through inhibited contractile responses, fennel restored the normal; blood pressure by increased urine secretion and ameliorated the overexpression of ROS and increased antioxidant status in the host.

Surely, one can say that Foeniculum acts mainly as a diuretic and a natriuretic while Marrubium displays vascular relaxant activity.

Ginger, Relieves Pain and Reduced Disability of Patients with Osteoarthritis

Ginger may have a potential and positive effect in ameliorating the symptoms of pain and complication of reduced quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis, some scientists suggested.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition of a type of joint disease characterized by the breaking down of joint cartilage and underlying bone due to the “wear and tear” of joints over time.


Some researchers suggested that OA is a degenerative disease characterized by “low-grade inflammation” in the cartilage and synovium, affecting the joint structure and progressive deterioration of cartilage.

120 participants selected for the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 3-month clinical trial for knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the ginger group (GG) or the placebo group (PG).

Ginger selected group was given capsules containing 500 mg of ginger powder, while the PG group was given capsules filled with 500 mg starch.

At the baseline, proinflammatory cytokine concentrations did not differ by group, observed by the participant's blood sample.

After 3 months, GG showed a significant reduction of cytokines compared to the PG.

In the final report, the research team wrote, "ginger supplementation may have promising benefits for knee osteoarthritis".

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Kidneys Against Drugs, Heavy Metals and Substances Toxicity

The kidneys are a pair of kidney shape organs located on either side of your spine with a function to filter out the wastes from the blood before passing the wastes through urinary secretion.

In glucose, tartrazine, induced toxicity, curcumin protected the kidney against DNA damage in leucocytes.

In a streptozotocin-induced diabetes rat model, curcumin protected the kidney against overexpression of free radical to cause kidney cell damage through its antioxidant activity.

In the long-term heavy metal model, curcumin inhibited the toxic effect caused by the accumulation of the metal in the induction of kidney cell damage.


In an animal model induced cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury by injection cisplatin, curcumin enhanced the function of cisplatin-resistant cancer cells and decrease its unwanted side effects.

More interestingly, curcumin inhibited the nicotine receptors on kidney cells that link nicotine to accelerated kidney damage in cigarette smokers

In other words. if the kidneys are less able to excrete nicotine, in long term, accumulated extracellular fluid and blood volumes increase, which can lead to severe kidney damage.

In other studies, kidney damage caused maleate, malathion, nicotine, cisplatin, gentamicin, and methotrexate also reversed by the injection of curcumin, similar to those of the aforementioned substances.

Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of kidney damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
