31% of American adult are obese.  According to the recent statistic, 71% of American are over weight of that have been found to induced chronic illness, including diabetes, heart diseases, .......The prevalence of over weight and obesity may be resulted of typical American diet with high in saturated and trans fat and less consumption of fruits and vegetable.

Green tea and coffee may be the next generation of natural sources of ingredients for reduced risk and treatment of stroke and post stoke management, the new study suggested.

Green tea has been a precious drink in traditional Chinese culture and used exceptional in socialization for more than 4000 thousand years. Due to its commercial values and health effects,
green tea now has been cultivated all over the world in suitable climate.
Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans from the Coffee plant.

In a 1 066 718 person-years of follow-up, with documented the incidence of strokes (n=3425) and coronary heart disease (n=910), higher green tea and coffee consumption was associated with inverse risks of CVD and strokes subtypes(1). In support of these effects, Karolinska Institutet showed that high consumption of coffee and tea may reduce the risk of cerebral infarction among men, independent of known cardiovascular risk factors, in a cohort study of 26 556 male Finnish smokers aged 50 to 69 years without a history of stroke at baseline(2).
Dr. Larsson SC said," The majority of prospective studies have reported a weak inverse association between moderate consumption of coffee and risk of stroke"(3) in the review of Coffee, tea, and cocoa and risk of stroke.
Other study in support of the above showed that tea consumption, especially green tea, is associated with significantly reduced risks for stroke and habitual coffee consumption not only reduced mortality, both for all-cause and cardiovascular deaths(5), but also associated with risks of heart failure, stroke, diabetes ...(4).

Blueberry, a flower plant, belong to the family Eriaceae and native to Northern America contains several essential phytochemicals and nutrients, including, lutein and zeaxanthin, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, iron, calcium and vitamins.

Flavonoid-rich blueberries not only exhibited anti hypertension cause of stroke in rat model by attenuating angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity, according to University of Prince Edward Island(6), but also reduce risk of stroke through ameliorating immunoreactivity for the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6(7).

Blueberry extract, according to the University of Prince Edward Island, inhibited oxidative stress cause of hypertensive stroke(8) and ischemic stroke(9) by lowering high blood pressure(8).

This finding of the effectiveness of Green Tea and coffee and blueberry phytochemicals  may serve as cornerstones of pharmaceutical target for further studies in production of a potential medication for  reduced risk treatment of stroke with little or no adverse effects.
People who are at high risk of stroke  due to family history, obesity,..... should drink at least one serving daily and people with Stroke should drink the smoothie as much as they can, depending to digestive toleration.
Life style and dietary patter change are recommended.

Respiratory Disease
is defined as medical conditions which affect the breathing organ and tissues including Inflammatory lung disease, Obstructive lung diseases, Restrictive lung diseases, Respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves and muscles breathing , etc,.

                                  Asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the air way of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood. In the study of 463,801 children aged 13-14 years in 155 collaborating centres in 56 countries. Children self-reported, through one-page questionnaires, symptoms of these three atopic disorders. In 99 centres in 42 countries, a video asthma questionnaire was also used for 304,796 children, found that for asthma symptoms, the highest 12-month prevalences were from centres in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Republic of Ireland, followed by most centres in North, Central, and South America; the lowest prevalences were from centres in several Eastern European countries, Indonesia, Greece, China, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, India, and Ethiopia(1). In the United States, approximately, asthma affects 25 million people, 7 million of them are children.

The Preventive Antioxidants and Phytochemicals

1. Selenium
Although levels of Se intake have been hypothesized to play an important role in the pathogenesis of asthma. However, significant associations between Se status and prevalence or severity of asthma have not been consistently demonstrated in human studies, mouse models of asthma have provided more definitive results suggesting that the benefits of Se supplementation may depend on an individual’s initial Se status(54). But other suggested that Se intake and allergic airway inflammation are not related in a simple dose-response manner(55).

2. Vitamin C and E
Free radical scavenger vitamin C and E intake are associated with the reduced risk of asthma. In a
of 452 children aged 3-6 years whom parents completed a questionnaire on the children’s and parents’ lifestyle and demographics, showed that children with high intakes of vitamins C and E may be associated with a reduced prevalence of asthma(56).
3. Vitamin D
Vitamin D (VD) inhibits the genesis of both Th1- and Th2-cell mediated diseases. The pleiotropic character VD-induced effects are due to the altered transcription of hundreds of genes. VD supplementation in most related studies reduced the prevalence of asthma(57).
4. Vitamin A and carotenoids and lycopene
Low serum levels of dietary antioxidants are associated with allergic diseases including asthma. In the study of 433 asthmatic schoolchildren and 537 healthy control subjects, between 6 and 18 years of age, conducted by the College of Science, King Saud University, showed that reduction of vitamin A in asthmatic children may have etiological implications for the disease(58). Other suggested that dietary supplementation or adequate intake of lycopene and vitamin A rich foods may be beneficial in asthmatic subjects(59).
5. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is one of component of catechin found abundantly in green tea. Purified EGCG included in vitro also suppressed IgE production, but at lower levels, compared with control. This study demonstrates that GTE and its major catechin, EGCG, have immunoregulatory effects on human IgE responses, according to the study by Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital Department of Child Health, University of Aberdeen(60).
6. Carotenoids
Carotenoids are fat soluble organic pigments of plants such as algae, some bacteria, and fungus. It generally cannot be manufactured by animals but have to acquired plants. Researchers at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales, showed that modifying the dietary intake of carotenoids alters clinical asthma outcomes. Improvements were evident only after increased fruit and vegetable intake, which suggests that whole-food interventions are most effective(61).

The dream of finding the natural ingredient for prevention and treatment of heart disease with adverse effects in replacement of conventional medication has not been abated. Some ingredients have to discard due to it can achieve the same potent results in human trials.
Beside cancer, heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans everyday. Approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.
Scientist community may have found the smoothie(combined ingredients of green tea) with potential and therapeutic value for reduced risk and treatment of heart disease without adverse effects.

Blueberry is a flower plant, belonging to the family Eriaceae and native to Northern America, cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for its health benefits and commercial profits. Recent study suggested that blueberry may have a potential to become a pharmaceutical ingredient for treatment of heart disease(1) due to its phytochemical procyanidin composition and total anthocyanin contents(1).
According to the National Institutes of Health, blueberry enriched diet (BD) has exhibited protective effects on myocardium from induced ischemic damage and demonstrated the potential to attenuate the development of post MI chronic heart failure(2).
Furthermore, Dr. Ahmet I and the research team at the same institution said" a blueberry-enriched diet has positive effects on the course of CHF and thus warrants consideration for clinical evaluation"(3).
Blueberry anthocyanins-enriched extracts (BAE) inprove heart function by attenuated mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate and activities of heart enzymes, improved cardiac dysfunction, left ventricular hypertrophy and fibrosis, through decreased inflammatory cytokines expression, ameliorated oxidative stress,...(4) on cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced cardiac injury.

Avocados are a commercially valuable fruit and are cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world, it is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

According to the University of KwaZulu-Natal, intake of acovado leaf extract (PAE) used as a natural supplementary remedy showed to inhibit hypertension and certain cases of cardiac dysfunctions in some rural Africa communities(5).
In animal model, combination of  aqueous extract containing leaf of Persea americana Mill. (Lauraceae), stems and leaf of Cymbopogon citratus (D.C) Stapf. (Poaceae), fruits of Citrus medical L. (Rutaceae) exhibited antihypertensive activity against ethanol and sucrose induced hypertension in rats by the improvement of biochemical and oxidative status(6).
Furthermore, Dr. Rodriguez-Sanchez D and the research team at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, avocado due to its acetogenin compounds, inhibited platelet aggregation with a potential preventive effect on thrombus formation, such as those that occur in ischaemic disease(7).

Flax seed is native to the region of the eastern Mediterranean to India and also known as common flax or linseed. n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), the main ingredient found in flax seed exhibit cardio protective effects through defending cardiomyocytes against the cell signalling protein TNF in pro-apoptotic action and preventing cardiac degenerative diseases(8).
According to the University of Manitoba, flax seed also retarded the progression of atherosclerotic plaques resulting in a significant ≈40% reduction in plaque formation(9).
In New Zealand White rabbits study, flaxseed supplementation effectively limit cholesterol-induced atherogenesis and abnormalities in endothelial-dependent vasorelaxation(10).

People who are at increased of heart disease due to family history, obesity.....should drink at least one serving daily and people with heart disease should drink no more than 4 serving a day, depending to digestive toleration.
Change life style and diet pattern are also recommended.

The Preventive do and do not’s list

1. Breast feeding
Breast feeding is considered to have a protective effect against asthma in children and prolonged breastfeeding was shown to reduce the risk of allergic and respiratory diseases, according to the study by the Dept. of Medical Statistics & Epidemiology, Hamad Medical Corporation, exclusive breast-feeding prevents development of allergic diseases in children. The main factors associated with breastfeeding for allergic diseases were being the first baby, maternal history of asthma, and parental history of allergic rhinitis. The study findings opens a big avenue for interventional role of breastfeeding(49). But longer duration of breastfeeding and later introduction of solid foods did not prevent the onset of asthma, eczema or atopy by age 5 years(50).
2. Lose weight if you are Obese
Asthma is more prevalent in obese compared with normal weight subjects. According to study,
asthma in the obese patient might be more responsive to leukotriene modifiers, orchestrated by leptin and/or adiponectin derived from adipose tissue, than to inhaled corticosteroids, possibly reflecting differences in the underlying airway inflammation in obese vs. non-obese asthmatics. In conclusion, overweight and obesity is associated with poorer asthma control and, very importantly, overall poorer response to asthma therapy compared with normal weight individuals(51).
3. Prevention of occupational asthma
Prevention of occupational asthma related to a work-sensitizing agent ideally would be achieved by avoidance of exposures that cause immunologic sensitization and subsequent asthma.
Education measures for workers to understand the meaning of work-related respiratory symptoms and appropriate workplace safety measures have not been formally evaluated but may also be expected to enhance protective measures and lead to earlier diagnosis, according to the study by Toronto Western Hospital(52).
4. Quit smoking and avoid second smoke
As smoking is considered as one of the major cause of asthma and second hand smoke can cause asthma to children and adult if exposing to a prolonged period of time.
5. Enhancing your immune system to prevent viral infection causes of asthma
6. Avoid asthma triggering allergens if you are diagnosed with allergens cause of asthma

7. Traditional Mediterranean diet
In a cross-sectional survey of 690 children aged 7-18 years in rural Crete, whose parents completed a questionnaire on their child’s respiratory and allergic symptoms and a 58-item food frequency questionnaire, researchers at the University of Crete found that a beneficial effect of commonly consumed fruits, vegetables and nuts, and of a high adherence to a traditional Mediterranean diet during childhood on symptoms of asthma and rhinitis. Diet may explain the relative lack of allergic symptoms in this population(53).

The smoothie for people with high risk weight gain and over weight
Yield: 2 serving (about 8 ounce each)
1 1/4 cups blueberry
1/4  cup acocado
1 cup green tea drink (Make from 4 grams of green tea, a slice of ginger and a cup of hot water lipped for 5 minutes, and let cool to room temperature)

1. Place all ingredients in a blender and puree about 1 minute
2. Blend on high speed about 1 minute or until the mixture is thick and the ice is well crushed. Add more green tea drink if needed
3. Serve immediately

Recent study suggested that drinking smoothies with ingredients of green tea(1), avocado(5) and blueberry(7) may induce weight loss in overweight and obese people.

Obesity is defined as a medical condition of excess body fat has accumulated overtime, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relatively to the height. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered over weight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of American population are either overweight or obese.

Epidemiological studies, linking green tea for reduced risk and treatment of overweight and obesity have drawn on hugh interest in scientific community, probably due to its catechins or an epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-caffeine mixture effects on weight loss and weight loss maintaining in either over weight and obese person(1).
According to the Maastricht University, intake of high and low caffeine green tea supplementation was associated with weight loss through thermogenesis and fat oxidation and with suppressed leptin in over weight and obese women(2).
In support of the above claim, Dr. Chen IJ and colleagues at the joint study lead by Taiwan International Traditional Chinese Medicine Training Center, said," 12 weeks of treatment with high-dose green tea extract resulted in significant weight loss, reduced waist circumference" and " The antiobestic mechanism of high-dose green tea extract might be associated in part with ghrelin secretion inhibition, leading to increased adiponectin levels"(3).
In fact, green tea has been used in native and traditional herbal history for treatment of obesity, but it is necessary to study more to determine the effectiveness and safety of medicinal plants and herbal extracts as well as pharmaceutically active ingredients, the joint study lead by the Urmia University of Medical Sciences concluded(4).

In a Sixty-one free-living volunteers (13 men and 48 women), with body mass index of 32 +/- 3.9 kg/m(2) (mean +/- standard deviation) participated in this randomized, controlled, parallel study, avocado intake decreased significantly body mass, body mass index, and percentage of body fat, without effectingserum lipid concentrations, plasma fibrinogen, arterial compliance, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures(5).
Dr Walker KZ and Dr. O'Dea K. said," Using a 'modified fat' (MF) diet enriched with monounsaturated fat (MUFA), body weight may be lost either by calorie counting, or by allowing ad libitum food intake with careful food selection"(6)
In support of avocado used for decrease weight in overweight and obese subjects, the Bharathi Women's College, Broadway study showed that avocado fruit extract has profound influence on leptin activity, which controls satiety and hunger to regulate the food intake, via its modulating effect on endogenous fat synthesis and adiponectin formation through the transcription factor FGF21(7).

Blueberry, a flower plant, belong to the family Eriaceae and native to Northern America may be the potential fruits used for reduced weight in over weight and obese person(8). As the Blueberry Leaf Extract (BBLE) significantly suppressed the over weight gain, decreased the TG level in the liver and inhibited leptin secretion and also improved insulin resistance in the HFD-fed C57BL/6 mice(8).
The Gyeongsang National University study also found that blueberry peel extracts (BPE) exhibited anti-obesity effect and mechanism through inhibiting adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells in synthesis and accumulation of triglycerides (9).
Dr. Wu T and the research team lead by the Zhejiang University, said," blueberry and mulberry juice may help counteract obesity" in the study of 4week-old C57BL/6 mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) with or without blueberry and mulberry juice for 12 weeks(10).

Taking all together, smoothie of green tea, avocado and blueberry may be a potent drink for reduced weight and treatment of overweight and obese subjects
People who are at increased risk of overweight due to family history, gene mutation, .....should drink at least one serving daily and overweight and obese people should drink the smoothie as much as they can depending to digestive toleration.
Change life style and diet pattern are also recommended.

                            The Preventive Diet

1. Apple
Diet high in fruits and vegetables may decrease the risk of chronic diseases. In the study of Apple phytochemicals and their health benefits, found that apples have been found to have very strong antioxidant activity, inhibit cancer cell proliferation, decrease lipid oxidation, and lower cholesterol. Apples contain a variety of phytochemicals, including quercetin, catechin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid, all of which are strong antioxidants. The phytochemical composition of apples varies greatly between different varieties of apples, and there are also small changes in phytochemicals during the maturation and ripening of the fruit(62).

2. Artichoke and Strawberries
Gallic acid (Strawberries) and caffeic acids (Artichoke) are reported to modulate allergic reactions via unknown mode(s) of action. In the stufy to evaluate whether both phenolic acids share a common mode of action with the two asthma drugs, suggest that certain anti-inflammatory phytochemicals including gallic acid and wedelolactone may modulate inflammatory allergic action via their agonism at GPR35. GPR35 may represent a target for the treatment of allergic disorders including asthma(63).
3. Flax and Sunflower seeds

Omega 3 fatty acid is types of phytochemical found abundantly in flax and sunflower seeds
In the study to assess the relation between observed levels of omega-3 fatty acids in plasma and symptoms of asthma and atopy in children at 18 months of age, showed that omega-3 fatty acid levels were expressed in quintiles of exposure ‘as treated’ without reference to treatment group allocation. Wheeze ever, doctor visits for wheeze, bronchodilator use and nocturnal coughing were significantly reduced in children in the higher exposure quintiles. Serum IgE was reduced in the highest quintile but not significantly so. There was no difference in diagnosed asthma or atopy between the exposure quintiles. Although wheeze at this age may not be a good indicator of asthma in later childhood, it is encouraging that some symptoms have been reduced in children with high omega-3 fatty acid concentrations in plasma(64).

4. Tomato
Lycopene, a phytochemical found abundantly in tomato. In the study to investigate the effects of lycopene, on allergic inflammation, in a mouse model of AAD. BALB/c mice receiving lycopene supplement or control were intraperitoneally sensitised and intranasally challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) to induce AAD, found that supplementation with lycopene reduces allergic inflammation both in the lungs and systemically, by decreasing Th2 cytokine responses. Thus, lycopene supplementation may have a protective effect against asthma(65).

5. Peaches, organic orange juice
Peach contains high amount of vitamin C which may be used to prevent and treat asthma.
In this double blind clinical trial study to evaluated 60 patients with chronic stable asthma. The patients were divided into two groups (A and B) including 30 patients in each group. group A received 1000 mg vitamin C daily and group B received placebo, found that The mean (±SD) leukocyte vitamin C level in group A at the baseline and after one month treatment with 1000 mg/day vitamin C, were 0.0903 (±0.0787) µg/108 leukocytes and 0.1400 (±0.0953) µg/108 leukocytes respectively (P<0.05). The mean (±SD) leukocyte vitamin C level in group B at the baseline and after one month administration of placebo, were 0.0867 (±0.0629) µg/108 leukocytes and 0.0805(±0.0736) µg/108 leukocytes respectively. The leukocyte vitamin C level in group A was higher than those of group B after one month treatment with vitamin C and placebo and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05)(66)

The smoothie for women with high risk of Oxidative stress and treatment of Oxidative stress

Yield: 2 serving (about 8 ounce each)
1 cup blueberry
1/2 cup cooked tomato
1 cup rice milk

1. Place the all ingredients in a blender and puree about 1 minute
2. Blend on high speed about 1 minute or until the mixture is thick and the ice is well crushed. Add more green tea drink if needed
3. Serve immediately

The dream of finding the natural ingredient for prevention and treatment of oxidative stress without adverse effects in replacement of conventional medicine has not been abated. Some ingredients have to discard due to it can achieve the same potent results in human trials.
In fact, oxidative stress is considered as one of most common factor for the development of several chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Antioxidants, found mostly in fruits and vegetables play an important role in inhibition of the reactive oxygen species ROS through its function as a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules.

Recent studies suggested that blue berry, tomato may consist a therapeutic value for reduced risk and treatment of oxidative stress in induction of diseases and syndromes.
Blueberry is a flower plant, belongings to the family Eriaceae and native to Northern America. The edible fruit has now been cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits due to recent discovery of its health benefits, particular in oxidative stress effect.According to the joint study lead by the Istanbul University, Blueberries (BB) containing high antioxidant capacity, exhibited dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities in decreased the expression of oxidative stress causes of hepatic cirrhosis and preneoplastic lesions(1).

Other study in the evaluation of its antioxidants known as anthocyanins expressed the possible effect of blueberry in attenuated oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines, through activation of immune natural killer cell count in 6 weeks of administration(2).

The joint study by China Agricultural University, in support of the effects of anthocyanins against oxidative stress suggested that the antioxidant inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and prevented the successive events associated with the mitochondrial damage and dysfunction, including recovered activities of electron transport chain, through intervention of Acrylamide (AA) toxicity incuded by heat(3). Furthermore, daily intake of blueberry (BB) supplementations also found to decrease oxidative stress signalling, increase neurogenesis, and increase signals involved in learning and memory through increased hippocampal neurogenesis related brain function and expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 in enhanced immunity(4).

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, tomato is grown world wide for commercial purpose
and often in green house.
In Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells, lycopene found in cooked tomato significantly increased manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) expression and decreased cellular ROS levels via the PI3K-Akt pathway in regulating cell cycle(5).
Dr. Lei X and colleagues in the joint study of a total of total of 60 male C57BL/6 mice, lead by the Shanxi Medical University, indicated that lycopene exhibited anti oxidative stress through improved the neurological score and attenuated neuronal apoptosis in the BCCAO mice in activation of metabolic and anti-oxidant defenses(6).
In acute cholestasis, the phytochemical also expressed the hepato protective role in diseases related to oxidative stress through inhibition of pathogenesis of cholestasis(7).

Dr Kim M and Dr., Kim H at the Yonsei University, in the investigation of gastric carcinogenesis said:" Risk factors of gastric carcinogenesis include oxidative stress,..... " and " lycopene, one of the naturally occurring carotenoids, has unique structural and chemical features that contributes to a potent antioxidant activity(8).

Taking altogether, Smoothie of Blueberry and Cooked Tomato may be effective for reduced risk of oxidative stress and its complications. People with high risk of oxidative stress, such as smoking,... should drink the smoothie at least one daily and people with oxidative stress induced chronic illness should drink as much as they can, depending to the digestive toleration.
