          Meng Chong (Tabanus bivittatus)

Meng Chong (Tabanus bivittatus) is also known as Gadfly. The bitter, slightly cold and toxic herb has been used in TCM totreat amenorrhea, tumors of the uterus, ovaries, endometriosis, mammary glands hyperplasia , chronic inflammation of the pelvic area, physical injuries, etc., as it promotes circulation of Blood, breaks up the Blood, eliminates Blood stasis, etc., by enhancing the function of liver channel.

Ingredients
Health Benefits
1. Anticoagulant protein
Tabanus anticoagulant protein (TAP) was isolated from the whole body of the tabanus, Tabanus bivittatus, using three purification steps (ammonium sulfate fractionation, gel filtration on Bio-Gel P-60, and ion exchange chromatography on DEAE Sephadex gel), showed that TAP has significant anticoagulant activity on blood coagulation system(1).

2. Infantile pneumonia
In the clarification of the statement of “Infantile pneumonia has been treated successfully with Huayu decoction (HYD) in our department for more than ten years” by the principles of Huoxue Huayu of TCM, the composition of Huayu decoction is as follows: Angelica sinensis, Paeonia lactiflora, Ligusticum wallichii, Spathollobus suberectus, Hirudo nipponica, Tabanus bivittatus, Paeonia suffroticosa, Astragalus membranaceus. Study showed that the results showed that the activity of erythrocyte superoxide dismutases (ESOD) reduced in the acute stage and returned to normal in convalescence. There was significant statistical difference in activity of ESOD between the patient’s group. In experimental studies, the producing of free radicals was induced by inhaling ozone in mice. It was found that HYD had the effect of scavenging free radicals in these animal models. The action of anti-oxidate of HYD was also detected in vitro. The mechanism of HYD in treating infantile pneumonia might be elucidated in some respects by these clinical and experimental studies(2).

3. Inhibiting proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells
In the study to evaluate the Dahuang Zhechong pill (DHZCP), a famous and classical Chinese herbal prescription, consists of twelve traditional Chinese drugs: Eupolyphaga sinensis Walker., Rheum officinale Baill., Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi., Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., Prunus persica Batsch., Prunus armeniaca L., Paeonia lactiflora Pall., Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch., Toxicodendron vernicifluum F.A. Barkl., Tabanus bivittatus Mats., Hirudo nipponica Whitman. and Holotrichia diomphalia Bates., and is clinically used to treat hepatic diseases, gynecopathy and atherosclerosis in China, showed that The serum of DHZCP-treated rats not only inhibited endothelin-1 (ET-1) stimulated cell proliferation and PDGF expression in VSMCs, but also promoted apoptosis of the proliferated VSMCs. Meanwhile, the serum of rats containing DHZCP interfered with the cycle of PDGF-stimulated VSMCs, increasing proportion of the cells in G(0)/G(1) phases and decreasing proportion of the cells in S and G(2)/M phases(3).

                                   Colitis

Colitis is defined as a condition of inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum and rectum.

                             Types of Colitis

According to the study by Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, types of colitis include
microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis and Behcet's colitis(a).

             The Treatment of Microscopic colitis

Since certain medication such as nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or naproxen (Aleve) may induced the diseases, it is the best of the aptients to exclude them before taking any medicine.
A.2.1. Non surdical treatments
1. Corticosteroids
The incidence of microscopic colitis and its disease burden are increasing, according to the study by the University of Calgary, both short- and long-termtreatment with budesonide is effective and well-tolerated for microscopic colitis. However, the rate of symptom relapse once budesonide is discontinued is high(87). Othe rrecent study indicated that a strong evidence has added new pharmacological options for the treatment of microscopic colitis: the role of steroidal therapy, especially oral budesonide, has gained relevance, as well as immunosuppressive agents such as azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine(89).

2. Antacids and adsorbents
In the study of thirteen patients with microscopic colitis (7 with subepithelial collagen deposition and 6 without) treated with eight chewable 262-mg bismuth subsalicylate tablets per day for 8 weeks, conducted by Baylor University Medical Center, found that Bismuth subsalicylate treatment for 8 weeks is safe and well tolerated. This regimen appears to be efficacious for the treatment of microscopic colitis and is worthy of further study in a controlled trial(88).

3. Anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents
The use of anti-tumor necrosis factor-α agents, infliximab and adalimumab, constitutes a new, interesting tool for the treatment of microscopic colitis, but larger, adequately designed studies are needed to confirm existing data(89).

4. Side effects are not limit to
a. Corticosteroids
According to the study by, Short-term corticosteroid use is associated with generally mild side effects, including cutaneous effects, electrolyte abnormalities, hypertension, hyperglycemia, pancreatitis, hematologic, immunologic, and neuropsychologic effects, although occasionally, clinically significant side effectsmay occur. Long-term corticosteroid use may be associated with more serious sequel, including osteoporosis, aseptic joint necrosis, adrenal insufficiency, gastrointestinal, hepatic, and ophthalmologic effects, hyperlipidemia, growth suppression, and possible congenital malformations(81a).

b. Anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents
b.4.1. Infliximab-induced or-exacerbated psoriatic lesions(82)
b.4.2. A rare cancer of white blood cells
b.4.3. Risk of opportunistic infections
b.4.4. TB and fungal infection

c. Antacids and adsorbents
Side effects include a chalky taste, mild constipation or diarrhea, thirst, stomach cramps, etc.

A.2.2. Surgical treatment
In rare case, sugical treatment may be necessary for patients with microscopic colitis if patients are not respond to medication treatment, depending to the patients conditions. Proctocolectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the entire colon and rectum. Ileostomy is a surgical opening constructed by bringing the end or loop of small intestine (the ileum) out onto the surface of the skin(85). According to the study by the University of Chicago Medical Center, totally laparoscopic totalproctocolectomy is therefore considered a safe alternative to open surgery for selected IBD patients not candidates for a restorative procedure(86).

Phytochemials are defined as a group of chemical compound found naturally in plants, including fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, etc. Many studies have proven that they can because of certain phytochemicals, but for what ever reason, there are either no clinical trials follow through or the studies can not make to stage of clinical trials. Do not expect the pharmateutical or foods industrial companies to pay for the researches, as the discovery of the phytochemicals to cure cancers can only dampen the profits of both industries as phytochemicals can not be patented.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, have become progressively worse and damaged other healthy tissues, sometimes spreads to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death.
Food intake can help to prevent and treat cancers.

Melanoma skin cancer ( Malignant Melanoma)

Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer but less common to other skin cancer as a result of malignancy of of melanocytes, which is the cell produced dark pigment for your skin. Approximate 120,000 new cases of melanoma in the US are diagnosed in a year. melanoma tends to spread along the skin in most of the cases, but also can grow downward to the deeper layers of the skin. At the later stage, it can spread to distant parts of the body, including organs.

Types of melanoma
1. Superficial spreading
This is a most common type of melanoma, accounted for over 70% of all cases. It usually starts with a normal mole, but for what ever reason, it begins to change malignantly with irregular borders, and has color variations.

2. Nodular type
This type of melanoma is more aggressive growth than superficial spreading and found most on the trunk, upper arms, and thighs. The nodular type of melanoma is usual detected as a lump with blue and black color.

3. Acral melanoma
Acral melanoma mostly founded on the hands, feet, and nail beds. The risk increases for people with darken-skin color.

4. Lentigo maligna melanoma
Found mostly on the face of elderly in the eye, back at the eye. around the mouth, the anus or vagina with great exposure to sunlight.

Types of foods to prevent and treat Melanoma skin cancer
1. green tea
In the study to determine the effect of green tea catechins on the invasive potential of human melanoma cells and the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects using A375 (BRAF-mutated) and Hs294t (Non-BRAF-mutated)melanoma cell lines as an in vitro model, showed that EGCG, a major green teacatechin, has the ability to inhibit melanoma cell invasion/migration, an essential step of metastasis, by targeting the endogenous expression of COX-2, PGE(2) receptors and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition(1).

2. Grape seed
In the examined the effect of grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSPs) on melanomacancer cell migration and the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects using highly metastasis-specific human melanoma cell lines, A375 and Hs294t, indicated that GSPs have the ability to inhibit melanoma cell invasion/migration by targeting the endogenous expression of COX-2 and reversing the process of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition(2).

3. Turmeric
Curcumin is a phytochemical found abundant in the plant. In acidic solutions (pH <7.4) it turns yellow, whereas in basic (pH > 8.6) solutions it turns bright red. In the successfully incorporated curcumin into a bilayer of dodecanoic acid attached to magnetite nanoparticles in an effort to maximize solubility and delivery efficiency, found that fluorescent microscopy revealed that curcumin associated magnetite nanoparticles were internalized by the melanoma cells and remained in the cytoplasm. The curcumin/magnetic nanoparticles synthesized in this study possess magnetic and water solubility properties making this a novel curcuminformulation with therapeutic potential(3).

4. Mango, Soy and Strawberries
Gallic acid (GA) is a phytochemical in the class of Phenolic acids, found abundantly in tea, mango, strawberries, soy, etc. In the study to examine the influence of GA on the protein levels and gene expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and in-vitro migration and invasiveness of human melanoma cells, showed that GA has antimetastatic potential by decreasing invasiveness of cancer cells. Moreover, this action of GA was involved in the Ras, p-ERK signaling pathways resulting in inhibition of MMP-2 in A375.S2 human melanoma cells. These data, therefore, provide evidence for the role of GA as a potential cancer chemotherapeutic agent, which can markedly inhibit the invasive capacity of melanoma cells(4).

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated overtime, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relatively to the height. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered over weight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of American population are either overweight or obese.

You can calculate your BMI index BMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is defined as endocrinologic diseases caused by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interferes with the function of the normal ovaries as resulting of enlarged ovaries, leading to hormone imbalance( excessive androgen), resulting in male pattern hair development, acne, irregular period or absence of period, weight gain and effecting fertility. It effects over 5% of women population or 1 in 20 women.

The Studies of  Bone mineral density in polycystic ovary syndrome

In the study to evaluate whether there are any differences in bone mineral density (BMD) between normal weight and obese adolescents suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) with oligo/amenorrhea, posted in PubMed, indicated that of 37 adolescents with PCOS, 12 (32%) were obese with BMI ≥25, of which 9/12 (75%) were hyperandrogenic. The control group consisted of 40 normal weight eumenorrheic girls. The PCOS group overall had lower lumbar spine BMD values as compared to the controls (0.91 vs 0.97 g/ cm(2), P = 0.033). The normal weight PCOS group had lower BMD at the spine (0.90 vs 0.97 g/ cm(2), P = 0.027), trochanter (0.66 vs 0.71 g/ cm(2), P = 0.039) as well as volumetric distal tibial core sites (268 vs 296 mg/ cm(3)) as compared to eumenorrheic controls, but there were no significant BMD differences between the obese PCOS group and the eumenorrheic controls.

                                 Dietary Minerals

Dietary Minerals are the group of minerals which is essential for our body to sustain normal functions and physical health.

                                      Chromium(chromium 3+)

Chromium(chromium 3+) is a essential mineral for the body in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, found abundantly in Beef, Eggs, Chicken, Oysters, Wheat germ, Green peppers, Banana, Apple, Etc.

Is chromium an essential trace element?

It has been recognized that chromium is an essential trace element associated with carbohydrate metabolism, and chromium deficiency causes an impaired glucose tolerance. According to the study by Kansai University, the amount of chromiumabsorbed in humans estimated from chromium intake (20 to 80 μg/day), chromiumabsorption rate (1%), and urinary chromium excretion (<1 μg/day) is less than 1 μg/day, which is much lower than those of other essential trace elements. In addition, because there is an inconsistency between the chromium concentration in food and chromiumintake, chromium intake seems to be dependent on chromium contamination during food processing and cooking. It is concluded that there is a high possibility that chromium is not an essential trace element(8).

                    Overcome Infertility

Infertility is defined as inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse. It effects over 5 millions couple alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world. Because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seeks help from professional specialist.

Vasography Analysisof Male Infertility In Conventional medicine Perspective

I. Definition
Vasography is a radiographic study of the vas deferens. An x-ray is taken once a contrast medium is injected.

II. Procedure
A small ultrasound probe is placed against the scrotum or into the rectum. If vasography is performed, radiographic dye is injected into the vas deferens (a tube connecting the site where the sperm is stored to the duct that expels it) and ejaculatory ducts. An X-ray is taken as the dye flows through the ducts.

III. Diagnosis
It helps to determine if the vas deferens is blocked or not and the reason of such blockage. In this study
a) if there is large amount of sperm containing fluid presented when the vas deferens is open, it indicate there is a block appeared in the vesicle end of the vas deferens. If there is no fluid presented, the procedure continue until the cause of blockage is found, if there is one.
b) The procedure is also perform on the other side of vas deferens.
c) The test sometimes found the blockage in the ejaculating duct, then surgical correction may be require.
d) It sometimes may found the problem is caused by blockage in the groin region, it can be corrected by surgery.

IV. Risk
No risk is found.
