          Nan Jiang (Rhizome Languas galangae)

Nan Jiang is also known as Ireater galangal. The acrid and warm herb has been used in TCM as anti fungal and anti cancer agent and to treat inflammation of the mucus, flatulence of the digestive tract, bad digestion, bad circulation with cold and/or numb limbs, allergy (nose). flu with cough, chronic cough, pain in the stomach etc., by enhancing the functions of stomach and lung channels.

Ingredients
1. Kaempferol
2. Galangin
3. Galangol
4. Pinene
5. Eugenol
6. L’-acetoxychavicol acetate
7. Etc.

Health Benefits
1. Neuroprotective effect
In the study to investigation the cognitive improvement of Alpinia galanga (AG) fractions in Alzheimer’s type of amnesia in mice induced by Aβ((25-35)), showed that Anti-amnesic effect was exerted by various fractions of Alpinia galanga. Among all fractions, preeminent neuroprotection was exerted by chloroform fraction, which has compound, 1′δ-1′-acetoxyeugenol acetate and it may be a potential therapeutic agent for Alzheimer’s type of amnesia. These results further motivate us to explore the activity of lead compound’s anti-amnesic effect on transgenic mice model of AD(1).

2. Anti-Streptococcus mutans efficacy
In the study to test in vitro anti-Streptococcus mutans activity of Thai herbal formulas used against dental caries (THF-DC), indicated that Subsequent determination of their MIC revealed that the formula containing Albizia myriophylla Benth. (Leguminosae), Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd. (Zingiberaceae), Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. (Acanthaceae), and Ocimum sanctum L. (Lamiaceae) was the most active, with MIC at 250 µg/mL(2).

3. Neurotransmitter Metabolic Enzymes and Antioxidants
In the assessment to investigate the effect of an ethanol extract of Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd (EAG) on oxidative stress induced Alzheimer’s type amnesia in mice, found that Mice were treated with an experimental extract at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg dose for 14 days and injected with neurotoxic Aβ and the doses were continued for 21 days. Behavioural studies with open field, step-down inhibitory avoidance and a water maze after treatment indicated the acceleration in cognitive function. The elevated levels of acetylcholinesterase and monoamine oxidase enzymes in amnesia induced mice were attenuated by treatment with EAG. The generation of free radicals was decreased due increased activity of antioxidant enzymes after treatment with EAG(3).

4. Antileishmanial activity
Hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts (100 microg/ml) of Alpinia galanga rhizomes exhibited significant activity in vitro against promastigotes of L. donovani (4).

5. Immunostimulating activity
In the study to test the Hot water polysaccharide extracts of Anacyclus pyrethrum (L.) Link. (family Compositae) Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad. (family Cucurbitaceae) and Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd. (family Zingiberaceae) for their immunostimulating activity in mice, indicated that The fractions from Anacyclus pyrethrum and Alpinia galanga showed a marked stimulating effect on the reticulo-endothelial system (RES) and increased the number of peritoneal exudate cells (PEC), and spleen cells of mice. In this case, the optimum doses were 50 and 25 mg/kg for the two fractions, respectively. On the other hand, the polysaccharide extracts of both Anacyclus pyrethrum and Alpinia galanga markedly enhanced the proliferation of the murine spleen cells in vitro using two tests (in vitro and in vivo effect)(5).

Fibroids, also known as Fibromyoma uteri or leiomyoma uteri, are benign tumors originated from the muscle tissue that adhere to either the inner or outer of the uterine wall. According to the statistic from National Uterine Fibroid Foundations approximately 80% of all women have uterine fibroids with the majority usually have no symptoms. Every 10 minutes, 12 hysterectomies are performed in the United States alone.

                        The Symptoms

Most common symptoms of fibroids uterine bleeding and pelvic pressure, but most women with small fibroids tumor are experience no symptoms at all, depending to the location and size of the tumors.
1. Uterine bleeding
Prolonged and/or profuse uterine bleeding are one of most common symptoms of fibroids, but women with submucous fibroids are particularly prone to this complication.
2. Pelvic pressure
It can be caused by the size and location of the fibroids as it can interfere with bowel movements and painful defecation or urinary frequency and incontinence.
3. Painful periods and sexual intercourse
As the result of over size fibroid.
4. Abdominal discomfort or bloatingAs the result of over size fibroid.

5. Painful DefecationAs the result of over size fibroid.

6. BackacheAs the result of the pressure of oversize fibroids.

7. Anemia
It may be result of heavy bleeding.

8. Infertility
Although it is considered uncommon affected only 3% of all cases , but it can happen, if the fibroids are in the stage of severity. In a study of "Pregnancy-related changes in the size of uterine leiomyomas" by Neiger R, Sonek JD, Croom CS, Ventolini G. Source Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio, USA. rneiger@mvh.org for evaluated 137 leiomyomas in 72 women (average, 2.3 +/- 1.8 per woman). Each underwent an average of 3.7 +/- 2.1 scans. The average gestational age at the time of first assessment was 14.4 +/- 5.4 weeks. The average diameter of the leiomyomas at the first study was 34.2 +/- 23 mm. On average, there was no significant change in the size of leiomyomas during pregnancy. We found that the size, location and our ability to visualize leiomyomas varied significantly during pregnancy. Four of the 72 women had obstetric complications related to the presence of leiomyomas., researchers concluded that The findings of our longitudinal sonographic assessment of 137 uterine leiomyomas suggest that despite the commonly held belief that they tend to enlarge during the course of pregnancy, this phenomenon is in fact quite rare.

9. Miscarriage
If the fibroid are growth large enough, it can interfere and cause miscarriage.

10. Premature labor
It may be as as result of the fibroid interfering with growth of the fetus.

Phytochemials are defined as a group of chemical compound found naturally in plants, including fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, etc. Many studies have proven that they can because of certain phytochemicals, but for what ever reason, there are either no clinical trials follow through or the studies can not make to stage of clinical trials. Do not expect the pharmateutical or foods industrial companies to pay for the researches, as the discovery of the phytochemicals to cure cancers can only dampen the profits of both industries as phytochemicals can not be patented.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, have become progressively worse and damaged other healthy tissues, sometimes spreads to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death.
Food intake can help to prevent and treat cancers.

             Treatment of Acne

There are many types of skin diseases in this world, the most common one is acne. Most people know acne is caused by dirt in oily skin pores, but little is known that acne is also caused by the system of toxins in the body. If our liver and kidney can not cleanse all toxins in the body, then our skin become the third source for cleansing the remainder of toxins.

Types of Skin Acne
1. Acne vulgaris
Acne vulgaris are most commonly skin diseases in puberty, as a result of an increase in testosterone, typically of the face and shoulders, chest, back, etc., according to the article of "Acne" by Dr.William D. James, M.D. posted in The NeW England Journal of Medicine, the author indicated that acne affects more than 85 percent of teenagers but frequently continues into adulthood....

2. Acne rosacea
Acne rosacea is a chronic condition of a red rash predominantly on the face as a result of the increase of blood flow of the capillaries in the lower layers of the skin.

3. Acne conglobata
Acne conglobata is an uncommon and unusually severe and highly inflammatoryform of acne presenting with comedones, nodules and abscesses found on the chest, the shoulders, the back, the buttocks, etc. According to the article of " Mutilating Facial Acne Conglobata by Patterson WM, Stibich AS, Dobke M, Schwartz RA posted in Cutis. 2000;66:139-140, that authors indicated that Acne conglobata, a severe form of acne vulgaris, often produces pronounced disfigurement. We describe a 23-year-old man with acne conglobata. Although this type of acne is often more marked on the back rather than on the face, our patient was unusual in that it was localized mainly to the cheeks.
4. Acne cosmetica
Acne are caused by the use of cosmetic products, including making the acne problem worse. the disease mostly happens to individuals who use cosmetics on a daily or frequent user.

5. Acne fulminans
Acne fulminan is an sever form of acne conglobata occurs after unsuccessful treatment for another form of acne. Many researchers believe that ance fulminan is a result of immunologically induced disease causes a rise in sebum and Propionibacterium acnes bacteria due to elevation of the level of testosterone.

6. Acne medicamentosa -
Acne medicamentosa are caused by starting or stopping a medicine caused by hormone change such as corticosteroids.

7. Baby acne
Baby acne as the name, it is a rash on the cheeks, chin, and forehead of approximately 20% of infants. Many researchers believe it is caused by increased sensitivity of sebaceous glands to maternal hormones in pregnancy.

Types of Foods to Prevent and treat Acne
In the assessment of etiologic agents in acne pathogenesis

A. According to studies
1. Tangerine peel
Nobiletin is a phytochemical compound belonging to the group flavonoid found abundantly in the citrus peels of tangerine. Researchers in the study of "A citruspolymethoxy flavonoid, nobiletin inhibits sebum production and sebocyteproliferation, and augments sebum excretion in hamsters", found that topical application of a citrus polymethoxy flavonoid, nobiletin, to hamster auricles decreased skin surface triacylglycerols (TG) level and the size of sebaceous glands along with inhibition of diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT)-dependent TG synthesis and sebocyte proliferation(1).

2. Cucumber
Cucumber promotes skin health due to the substance of silica and vitamin K by soothing skin irritations, swelling and acting as coagulation in healing skin cut and wound, according to the
article of "Skin Benefits of Cucumber – Makes Your Skin Smooth" by Corwin Brown posted in ArticleBase(2), the author write that Cucumber is an excellent source of silica, which is a trace mineral that contributes to the strength of our connective tissue. Connective tissue is what holds our body together. Cucumbers are effective when used for various skin problems, including swelling under the eyes and sunburn.

3. Glycemic index, glycemic load
The glycemic load (GL) is a ranking system for carbohydrate content in foodportions based on their GI and the portion size. These two markers increasingly are being used to prevent typical diseases of the Western world, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and acne. Data on the efficacy of GI and GL in the treatment of Western population diseases are discussed and critically evaluated, with a particular focus on acne and other skin disorders(3).

4. Grapes
Resveratrol is a phytochemical in the class of Stilbenoids, found abundantly in skins and seed of grape. Dr. Fabbrocini G,and the scientists at the University of Naples Federico in the study of resveratrol-containing hydrogel administered to 20 patients affected by acne vulgaris enrolled in this single-blind study, showed a 53.75% mean reduction in the GAGS score on the resveratrol-treated sides of the face compared with 6.10% on the vehicle-treated sides of the face. These data were supported by histologic analysis, which showed a 66.7% mean reduction in the average area of microcomedones on the resveratrol-treated sides of the face. The comparison with the vehicle-treated side of the face (9.7% reduction) showed a clinically relevant and statistically significant decrease of lesions in areas treated with resveratrol-containing hydrogel(4).
