The bitter, sweet and cool herb has been used in TCM as Anti-inflammatory, anti-fever, anti-bacterial agent and to clear Clears the heart, liver, relieves toxicity, get rid of wind and tremors, treat convulsions with high fever due to liver heat, etc., as it clears Heat, expels toxins, calms Wind and convulsions, transforms Phlegm, opens the orifices, etc., by enhancing the functions of heart and liver channels.

Ingredients
1. Bilirubin
2. Biliverdin
3. Conjugated bile acid
4. Cholic acid
5. Deoxycholic acid
6. Chenodeoxycholic acid
7. Lithocholic acid
8. Sterocholic acid
9. Sterocholic acid
10. Etc.

Health Benefits
1. Anti-bacterial components
In the study to search for the fingerprints of artificial Calculus bovis extracts from different solvents established by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and the anti-bacterial activities of artificial C. bovis extracts on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) growth, found that peak 1 (taurocholate sodium), peak 3 (unknown compound), peak 4 (cholic acid), and peak 6 (chenodeoxycholic acid) are more significant than the other peaks with the standard parameter estimate 0.453, -0.166, 0.749, 0.025, respectively. So, compounds cholic acid, taurocholate sodium, and chenodeoxycholic acid might be the major anti-bacterial components in artificial C. bovis(1).

2. Schistosomiasis
In the assessment to investigate the interventional effects and mechanism of in vitro cultivated Calculus Bovis compound preparation (ICCBco) on pulmonary lesions in portal hypertensive rabbits with schistosomiasis., showed that ICCBco can effectively prevent pulmonary complications in portal hypertensive rabbits with schistosomiasis by means of improving lung microcirculation and lowering the content of extracellular matrix(2).

3. Ulcer healing
In the observation to investigate the effects of calculus bovis on the fibroblast proliferation, collagen production, matrix metalloproteinases-2, -9 activities and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 production by MTT assay, chloramine T method, gelatin zymography and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays respectively, indicated that the major function of calculus bovis in the process of ulcer healing is not to promote tissue regeneration, the mechanism that calculus bovis inhibits collagen synthesis may be partly due to its ability to very significantly (P<0.01) suppress the production of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1(3).

4. Cerebral and myocardial cells protective effects
In the study to examine the protective effects of in vitro cultivated calculus bovis (ICCB) on the cerebral and myocardial cells in hypoxic mice, indicated that the pathological change in brain and heart in the ICCB group was very slight, while abnormal changes in the control group were obviously more serious. ICCB significantly prolonged the panting time of the hypoxic mice (P<0.001), increased the activity of SOD, GSH-px, T-AOC in serum and tissues of brain, liver, heart and elevated the content of DA and NE. ICCB also pronouncedly reduced content of MDA in serum and tissues of brain, heart and liver. Significant differences in these parameters were noted between ICCB group and controls(4).

5. Antithrombotic effects
In the investigattion of Antithrombotic xinmaining, composed with Moschus, Calculus Bovis, Borneol, Radix Ligusticum, Flos Sophorae Immaturus, Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, Leech, etc., clinical result showed that the obvious effective rate in the therapeutic group was 62.1% and the total effective rate 96.3%; the values in the control group were 38.5% and 86.3% respectively (P less than 0.01)(5).

                                 Dietary Minerals

Dietary Minerals are the group of minerals which is essential for our body to sustain normal functions and physical health.

                                        Cobalt

Cobalt is one of many essential mineral needed by our body in very small amounts to enhance productions of red blood cell and the formation of myelin nerve coverings It also is vital as a necessary cofactor for making the thyroid hormone thyroxine and stored in the red blood cells, the plasma, liver, kidney, spleen, pancreas, etc.

Cobalamin absorption: Mammalian physiology and acquired and inherited disorders

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a cobalt-containing compound synthesized by bacteria and an essential nutrient in mammals, which take it up from diet. mIn the review to summarize the causes leading to vitamin B12 deficiency including decreased intake, impaired absorption and increased requirements, found that under physiological conditions, vitamin B12 bound to the gastric intrinsic factor is internalized in the ileum by a highly specific receptor complex composed by Cubilin (Cubn) and Amnionless (Amn). Following exit of vitamin B12 from the ileum, general cellular uptake from the circulation requires the transcobalamin receptor CD320 whereas kidney reabsorption of cobalamin depends on Megalin (Lrp2). Whereas malabsorption of vitamin B12 is most commonly seen in the elderly, selective pediatric, nondietary-induced B12 deficiency is generally due to inherited disorders including the Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome and the much rarer intrinsic factor deficiency. Biochemical, clinical and genetic research on these disorders considerably improved our knowledge of vitamin B12 absorption. This review describes basic and recent findings on the intestinal handling of vitamin B12 and its importance in health and disease(2).

                                        Autism

Autism is one of the most common forms of brain development disorder and one in 166 child is diagnosed with some forms of autism. Children who are diagnosed with autism tend to have weak immune system and auto immune problems. Autism is defined as medical condition in which a child has some of the following impairments
a) Speech
b) Social and communication skills
c) Limited interest
d) Repetitive behaviour

Avoid Artificial ingredients - Artificial Addictive

Since most children with autism have poor digestive system and weakened immune system, intake of artificial ingredients will cause toxin accumulated in the body, leading to abnormality of liver function in toxins elimination, resulting in increasing the severity of the symptoms.

d) Artificial Addictive
Artificial addictive is defined as substances, adding to foods from the manufacture with the purpose of preservation, coloring, texture and flavor. Studies found that artificial additive can causes several types of cancer and tumor. Many of them have negative impacts in children with autism.
i) Olestra
Olestra is a fat substitute used in crackers and potato chips. It is type of additive can not be absorbed by the digestive system, leading to diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal cramps.
ii) Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
MSG is used as a flavor enhancer in many cooking and preservative foods. It is said that MSG can cause sensitive neurons to die. leading to headache, nausea or vomiting.

                    Overcome Infertility

Infertility is defined as inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse. It effects over 5 millions couple alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world. Because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seeks help from professional specialist.

Stagnation of qi and Blood In Male Infertility in Traditional Chinese Medicine

The unexplained causes of infertility is defined as if the woman and men reproductive system are function normally but the present-day medical technology and medical doctors can not give a reason why the couple can not conceive. In this article, we will discuss What is stagnation of qi and blood In traditional Chinese medicine in treating infertility

I. Definition
Stagnation of qi and blood is normally caused by weakened liver in fat and protein metabolism, and in helping the spleen in blood formation, leading nervous symptoms and reproductive problems, including worriness, over-thinking, stress, chronic illness, impotence, low sperm count, short sperm life, slow sperm mobility.

II. Causes and effects of qi and blood stagnation
1. Unhealthy diet
a) Unbalance of levels of essential fatty acids in our body interferes with the liver in essential fatty acids metabolism, leading to over production of certain hormones that causes lower levels for other hormone which are important to maintain healthy kidney in production of good quality sperm.
b) Saturated fat and trans fat decreases the liver function in fat and protein metabolism, thereby increasing the risk of nervous tension causing hormone imbalance including levels of testosterone leading to low quality sperm production.

c) We all know that excessive alcohol drinking for prolong period of time will kill the liver, leading to impotence and low sexual desire.

2. Liver diseases
Liver diseases such as hepatitis may decrease over all functions of liver if it is not controlled.

3. Abnormal function of spleen
No matter how healthy the spleen, without the cooperation of the liver, it causes abnormal spleen in insulin production, leading to sticky blood and the risk of diabetes.

III. Risk
As we mentioned in the definition.

                       Duodenal ulcers

Duodenal ulcers, a type of peptic ulcer is defined as a condition of a localized tissue erosion in the lining the duodenum as a result of bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) in most cases. According to the study by Department of Research, University Hospital, Basel, fasting gastrin and pepsinogen-I and -II concentrations were significantly higher in H pylori positive compared with H pylori negative subjects. Neither age nor sex affected basal gastrin and pepsinogen concentrations in H pylori negative subjects. Fasting gastrin, pepsinogen-I and -II concentrations in serum samples were similar in H pylori positive persons with no symptoms and those with duodenal ulcers suggesting that similar mechanisms are involved in increasing plasma concentrations of these variables in both populations. Hypergastrinaemia and hyperpepsinogenaemia are therefore probably secondary to active H pylori infection(1).

                               The  Symptoms

1. Abdominal pain
In a report of Thirty nine children with recurrent abdominal pain aged between 5.5 and 12 years, underwent endoscopic duodenal biopsy. Duodenal inflammation was graded by the duodenitis scale of Whitehead et al (grade 0, 1, 2, and 3). In 13 out of 39 patients (33%) definite signs of inflammation were found (grade 2 and 3). Intestinal permeability to 51Cr-EDTA in patients with duodenitis (grade 1, 2, and 3) was significantly higher (4.42 (1.73)%) than in patients with normal (grade 0) duodenal biopsy appearances (3.3 (0.9)%)(1).

2. Loss of appetite, epigastric pain and weight loss
Parasitic infection cause of Duodenitis can lead to loss of appetite and weight loss, according to the study of An extremely uncommon case of parasitic infectionpresenting as eosinophilic ascites in a young patient, by thye research team at the GATA Haydarpasa Training Hospital(2).

3. Other symptoms
In the study of over a 15 month period, 124 referred patients were evaluated in a prospective cohort analysis with a standardised investigation including duodenal biopsies and aspirate, blood tests and faecal parasite and calprotectin tests. Recovered subjects were recruited for symptom analysis, researchers at the Haukeland University Hospital, found that There were significant associations between persistent Giardia positivity, microscopic duodenal inflammation and a positive calprotectin test. In patients with persisting symptoms after metronidazole treated Giardia infection we commonly found chronic Giardia infection and microscopic duodenal inflammation, especially in illness duration less than 7 months. Both these findings subsided over time. Increasingly, investigations could not determine a definite cause for the persistent symptoms. The very long-termpost-giardiasis diarrhoea, bloating, nausea and abdominal pain documented here need further study(3).

                        Depression

Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a love one, and illness. Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing in an alarming rate. Depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself. The mild case of depression can be defeated by a variety of self-care techniques. Others require the treatment of medication, such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy that help to reduce and sometimes eliminate the symptoms of depression.

There are 3 types of depressions:

1. Reactive depression
Reactive depression is the reaction caused by emotional swings affecting anyone at one time at his and her life, such as death of a love one, loss of financial stability or chronic diseases. People suffering from reactive depression may lose interest of doing things that provide pleasure. These people generally still function in daily activity normally. Most people suffering from reactive depression may see the symptoms disappear gradually over time, some may require the support from others or take antidepressant medications.
2. Physical depression
This type of depression is caused by chemical imbalance in the brain as resulting of chronic illness such as hormone imbalance, immune disorder or nutritional deficiency. People suffering from physical depression may lose interest or pleasure in almost everything and generally have a negative impact on every function in daily life.

3. Manic depression
This is a severe type of physical depression. In medical terms, manic depression is characterized by wide mood swings with periods of both depression, mania and a variety of other significant symptoms not present in other types of depression such as the fluctuation between periods of extreme energy and vivacity with those of complete hopeless.
