Further differentiation of over expression of the epidermal growth factor receptor family member Her-2/neu in breast cancer, application of EGCG not only inhibited mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV)-Her-2/neu NF639 cell growth in culture and soft agar.but also ameliorated risk of basal Her-2/neu receptor tyrosine phosphorylation in contribution of exceptional oncogenic potency. via regulation of enzymes involved in cellular growth, proliferation, differentiation (phosphatidylinositol 3- kinase), and proteins in induced oncogenic transformation (Akt kinase to NF-kappaB pathway).

Therefore, higher dose of EGCG promoted over expression of antioxidants in reduced oxidative stress may amplify the toxicity in ameliorated human cancer cells proliferation and induced apoptosis.

Dr., the lead author said, "EGCG may accentuate oxidative stress to inhibit growth of ovarian cancer cells and sensitize them to cisplatin".

Other researchers in the study of toxicity of EGCG suggested that green tea catechin, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) as a potent adjuvant to enhance the anti tumor efficacy of cisplatin while mitigating its harmful side effects through various mechanisms.

Application of EGCG showed to promote hyaluronic acid function in regulation of normal cell division and prevention of the acid in initiation of cancerous cell proliferation.

Hyaluronic acid, a polysaccharide molecule, plays an important role in cell proliferation and migration, and may involve in the progression of some malignant tumors.

Additionally, EGCG also expressed anti cancer effect by promoting the injection of chemo medicine cisplatin into the CD44-over expressing cancer cells to prevent over growth of tumor cells.

In other words, green tea catechin-based micellar nanocomplexes may be considered as a safe and effective cisplatin nanomedicine for ovarian cancer treatment..

More interestingly, in the additionally examined the effect of EGCG in suppressing ovarian cancer cell growth in 3 human ovarian cancer cell lines (p53 negative, SKOV-3 cells; mutant type p53, OVCAR-3 cells; and wild type p53, PA-1 cells),

EGCG decreased tumor growth in each cell line in a dose-dependent fashion and induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest, particular to the G(1) phase in SKOV-3 and OVCAR-3 cells in compared to G(1)/S transition phase arrest in PA-1 cells.

The chemical also differentiately upregulated the expression of genes and proteins in promoted cancer cell arrest, suppressed tumor growth and induced cell death (Bax, p21, Retinoblastoma, cyclin D1, CDK4, Bcl-X(L)) by more than 2-fold

Further analysis of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg) in inhibited gene expression in risk of lung cancer by binding HIF-1α, in promoted cell proliferation and anchorage-independent growth, researchers launched a study to elucidate the role of microRNA in the EGCG inhibition of tobacco carcinogen-induced lung tumors in A/J mice found that 26 potential targeted genes of the 21 microRNAs. with the mRNA expression profiles may have some implications in increased lung cancer risk.

The findings also suggested that green tea Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg) has a strong effect in reduced risk lung cancer through both expression of mutate and cancer-related genes.

More importantly, mutated genes expression has been identified in contribution to cancer development and progression, therefore by target the expression of such genes may help scientists in explore the origins of abnormal gene expression in compared to normal cells.

Other researchers suggested that by targeting both DNA and RNA data to identify alternative expression of mutated gene in patients of lung cancer may open the door by offering specific treatment only for such patients

More precisely, by identified such gene in cancer cell patients, scientist may prescribe gene targeting technology, specific medication and treatment to stop cancer from growing and spreading.


Further differentiation of the effect of green tea extract in lung cancer risk, researchers at the University in Toruń filed the following report

More interestingly, in the study of the effects of Se-enriched Ziyang green tea, containing chemical compound mannose, rhamnose and fucose in anti tumor activity on human osteosarcoma U-2 OS cells in vitro and in vivo, researchers found that Se-ZYTP at concentration of 25, 50, 100 and 200 μg/ml exetred a significantly inhibition of proliferation of human osteosarcoma U-2 OS cells in a concentration-dependent fashion.

In cancer cell line In U-2 OS cancer induced in BALB/c athymic mice model, Se-ZYTP oral administration at three doses of 100, 200 and 400mg/kg body weight (B.W.) daily for 28 days resulted in tumor regression as compared to model control without causing any serious side effects.


Once again, we illustrated that other chemical compounds found in green tea may also have the potential in suppression of proliferation and induced apoptosis of osteosarcoma.
In deed, the anti osteosarcoma activities of Se-enriched Ziyang green tea may be attributed to the stimulation in increased pro-apoptotic protein Bax expression(upregulated by the tumor suppressor protein p53 in induced apoptosis) and decreased expression levels of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2(regulator proteins that regulate cell death) and NG2(involved cell survival, migration and angiogenesis), some researchers suggested.



Taking altogether, green tea with plenty of phytochemicals in suppression of the development and progression of cancer may be considered as an adjunct therapy in reduced risk and combination with chemo drugs for treatment of osteosarcoma.

Green tea, considered as a functional food, linking numbers of health benefit has been reported by several renowned research and studies. 1. The antioxidant activity in ameliorate production of ROS in induced risk of oxidative stress which has been found to associate to production of lipid peroxidation, leading to abnormal deposition of amyloid β (Aβ) peptide

2. Free radical over expression in aging people also vulnerable to imbalance of antioxidant and ROS
may have a negatively direct interaction with proteins, nucleic acids, and other molecules and may also alter their structures and functions in inducing risk AD.


Indeed, as a single ingredient isolated from green tea, epigallocatechin and gallic acid, (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG) have been found to cause toxicity in some cases in medical literature. Therefore taking the ingredient in long term and overdoses may have a implication of liver damage.


In a animal study to evaluate the efficacy of Caffeic acid in AD, mice rats randomly divided into three groups: i) control group, ii) AD model group and iii) caffeic acid group, mice fed with the phytochemical expressed a significant in increased learning deficit and cognitive function demonstrated by the Morris water maze task in compared control.

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that green process a neuro protective against the risk and progression of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) attributed to some of the major chemical constituents. But intake of single ingredient isolated from green tea should be taken with care.

All About Green Tea: Green Tea Hepatoptotective Activity


Please note that this article does not embrace the use of single and multi ingredients extracted from green tea, particularly in the overdose state.



Green tea may have a potentially hepoprotective effect in prevention and treatment of liver disease, renowned institutes postulated.

According to the joint study lead by theZhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University Guangzhou, in the review of the data base of PubMed, CNKI, Wanfang and Weipu databases, regular green tea drinking is associated to a significant reduction in the risk of liver disease, including hepatocellular carcinoma, liver steatosis, hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and chronic liver disease.

Also, Green tea demonstrated a reduced risk of liver disease regardless of the race and geography of the patients resided such as Asian, American and European subgroups.
Unfortunately, in a mouse model, different doses of GT fractions and EGCG and a single dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) combined with EGCG, administered for 5 days to mice suggested that mice fed with combining a single high dose of EGCG with a single dose of LPS showed to induce liver injury.

Repeat injection of EGCG in the group also found to associate to mild liver injure, probably was attributed to the adverse effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the study insisted.

Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) is one of the major and powerful antioxidant of green tea found to be most effective cancer chemopreventive polyphenol in many studies posted on medical literature. However, the single ingredients extract has also been found to induce hepotoxocity and acute liver dysfunction in many occasions due to overdoses and long term usages.

Additionally, according to the Baylor College of Medicine and Dalhousie University, Halifax reported, "(There is) a case of acute impending liver failure in an adolescent male using a weight-loss product containing green tea extract" and "acute liver toxicity observed in individuals consuming supplements containing green tea extract".

Taking altogether, the conflict result of green tea in liver disease may be result of study design, group selection, sample size, doses intake,........People with liver disease should talk to a specialist of herbal products before consuming.

All About Green Tea: Green Tea and the Risk of Renal Disease


Green tea showed to inhibited or exhibited kidney function in toxin elimination in deteriorated renal function in patient with chronic renal disease, studies proposed.

Renal Disease is an impaired function in toxin elimination for more than a specific time as a result of kidney damage or injure.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine ,or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will be helpful to solve the problem.


In mice fed with a powdered diet containing green tea polyphenolic extract (0.1%) starting 3 days prior to CsA treatment (25 mg/kg, i.g. daily for 3 weeks).showed a decreased renal nuclear DNA-encoded oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) protein ATP synthase-β (AS-β)by 42%, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded OXPHOS protein NADH dehydrogenase-3 (ND3) involved oxidize nutrients for energy conversion by 87%.

Flavanols (polyphenols) are rich phytochemicals isolated from green tea, particularly in the expression in form of most bioactive flavanol EGCG.

Oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) protein ATP synthase-β (AS-β) plays a key role in energy production and regulated the generation of free radicals, and apoptosis through respiratory chain.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded OXPHOS protein NADH dehydrogenase-3 (ND3) in reduced risk of gene mutation through oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS).

Dr. Rehman H, the lead author said," Green tea polyphenols markedly attenuated CsA-induced renal injury and improved renal function. Together, these results demonstrate that green tea polyphenols attenuate CsA-induced kidney injury, at least in part, through the stimulation of MB".
In support of the efficacy of green tea for treatment of renal disease, the study of F40 rats randomly divided into 4 groups. Group 1 acted as control; group 2 received contrast medium (intravenous iodixanol, 10 mL/kg, as a single dose); group 3 received contrast medium and then green tea extract for 3 days (10 mg/kg/d, intraperitoneal); and group 4 first received green tea and then contrast medium, researchers showed that group treated with green tea had significantly higher overall scores than the control group.

Treatment group also expressed a significant improvement in progression of renal degeneration caused by nephrotoxicity of contrast media.

Unfortunately, according to the joint study lead by the China Medical University, inhibited the elimination of indoxyl sulfate (IS) and p-cresyl sulfate (PCS), a highly protein-bound nephro-cardiovascular toxins in CRF rats.

Catechin, is another major chemical constituent isolated from Green tea (GT) and a popular beverage in China.

Indoxyl sulfate(IS), a circulating uremic toxin has found to associate to the development of glomerular sclerosis and interstitial fibrosis.

P-Cresyl sulfate (pCS) is also an uremic toxin generated by intestinal bacteria
which has an implication to worsen outcome of patients with chronic kidney disease and increased cardiovascular burden.


Furthermore, green tea injection of catechin.in experiment mice also showed a significantly increased the levels of serum creatinine (Cr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), an indication of further kidney damage after ingestion of green tea catechin.

Dr. Peng YH, the lead author said, "GT inhibited the elimination of nephro-cardiovascular toxins such as IS and PCS, and deteriorated the renal function in CRF rats".


Taking together, the conflict results of green tea in expression of chronic renal disease may be due to study design, the group sample, the subject selection doses administration,........., therefore patients with renal disease should be consult with specialists before taking.
