Phytic acid, a bioactive compound found mostly in seeds and beans may have a strong and profound effect in protecting the aging brain against the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD), some scientists suggested.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease occurred mostly in the older population characterized by progressive brain cell death that happens over time.
Alzheimer's disease worsens over time and it is fatal.
As the disease progression, the brain tissue of the patient with AD has fewer and fewer nerve cells and connections.
In the elderly, age-related to the changes in the brain include atrophy (shrinking) of certain parts of the brain, inflammation associated with overexpression of free radicals in the induction of neuro cytotoxicity that affects the energy production within cells and long-term accumulated of plaques in the neurons caused by unhealthy diet are many prevalent risk factors that elevate the early onset and progression of the disease.
Dr. Pini L and colleagues in the study "Brain atrophy in Alzheimer's Disease and aging" said, "Disease progression has also been associated with changes in white matter tracts. Recent studies have investigated two areas often overlooked in AD, such as the striatum and basal forebrain, reporting significant atrophy".
The results suggested the loss of white matter tracts in the striatum and basal forebrain may be the culprits that brain shrinking in the aging population.
In the free radicals analysis, researchers suggested that free radicals overexpression cause the reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the elderly initiates the onset of oxidative stress that may attack and damage lipids, proteins, and DNA, leading to irreversible brain cells damage and development of AD.
Dr. Tuppo EE, the lead author in the study of oxidative stress and AD, said, "The brain is especially sensitive to oxidative damage because of its high content of readily oxidized fatty acids, high use of oxygen, and low levels of antioxidants" and "Evidence for oxidative damage has been obtained from postmortem brain tissue as well as from living patients with Alzheimer's disease. Antioxidants such as vitamin E show promise that they may help in treating the disease.
Phytic acid (Inositol hexaphosphate) are phytochemicals of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, pumpkin, beans, almonds, etc.
Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color. Phytochemicals may be next potential sources of new medications for the treatment of diseases with little or no side effects.
In the finding of a novel protective treatment for AD pathology, researchers at the Oregon Health & Science University, Portland conducted an investigation to evaluate the phytic acid(inositol hexakisphosphate), a phytochemical found in food grains and a key signaling molecule in mammalian cells.
The experiment is to examine the protective and beneficial effects of phytic acid against amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology in MC65 cells and the Tg2576 mouse model.
In MC65 cells, after 48-72-hour treatment with phytic acid researchers showed that phytic acid provided complete protection against amyloid precursor protein-C-terminal fragment-induced cytotoxicity by reducing the levels of calcium present, free radicals, and plaques accumulation.
Furthermore, injection of phytic acid significantly increased brain levels of cytochrome oxidase which is found in low levels in AD patients and decreased the lipid peroxidation.
The phytic acid was well tolerated with little side effects.
Additionally, in the finding a composition and method for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, researcher showed that phytic acid, a phytate salt, an isomer or hydrolysate of phytic acid or a phytate salt, or a mixture of any combination administered to a person in an amount from about 0.5 grams to about 18.75 grams per day, demonstrated a potential effect in reducing amyloid plaque development.
At the experiment, researchers also discovered that very low doses of phytic acid are effective in the treatment and prevention of aggregation of beta-amyloid proteins as are commonly seen in the brains of Alzheimer's patients.
Taken altogether, the phytic acid found abundant in nuts and seeds may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention of AD and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate, the Potential Anti Brain Cancer Bioactive Compound
Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be next pharmacotherapeutic target to identify the chemo drug for the treatment of brain cancer without inducing any side effects.
Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color.
Brain and spinal cord make up the nervous system. Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originated are not very common.
Brain cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the brain tissue.
Benign tumors are noncancerous, and malignant tumors are cancerous. More than 190.000 people in the US are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year alone.
Most brain types of brain cancer in the older adult ages 50 to 60 are Chordomas. The cancer is a rare and slow growing, but it can invade adjacent bone and put pressure on the nearby neural tissue.
Meningiomas, the most common type of benign brain tumor of the age group 40-50s. However, a small percentage of these tumors can be malignant.
According to the statistic provided by the Canadian cancer society, Every day about 25 Canadians is diagnosed with a brain tumor.
The 5-year survival rate of brain cancer is only 25%, compared to over 60% for cancers overall. Most adults with a diagnosis of aggressive glioblastoma survive only 1–2 years after their diagnosis.
The exact causes of brain cancer are debatable. Researchers di not know why people with the same health conditions, family history, some are at a higher risk to develop brain cancer while others do not.
Some researchers suggested genetic preposition and acquired gene mutation due to long-term exposure to chemical toxins may be the prevalent risk factor that causes the alternation of brain cell DNA.
Most common symptoms of brain cancer depending on the stage are persistent headaches and localized pain, gradual loss of sensation and movement, speech difficulty and persistent pain
If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor immediately to rule the brain cancer possibility.
Allyl isothiocyanate is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in horseradish, mustard, wasabi, etc.
Most primary tumors are caused by abnormal cells growth that surrounds and support neurons, with a small number may be caused by a gene defect from exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals.
In the examining the side effects of Allyl isothiocyanate from the available data suggest that urinary concentrations of AITC equivalent are at least ten times higher than in the plasma, and tissue levels of AITC equivalent in the urinary bladder were 14-79 times higher than in other organs after oral AITC administration to rats for the treatment of cancer.
These results indicated AITC may be most effective in the bladder as a cancer chemopreventive compound, as AITC at high-dose levels exhibited a low degree of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in animal cancer studies.
Once again, the experiment reaffirmed the effect of AITC in the exhibition of many desirable attributes of a cancer chemopreventive agent.
In the reassessment of Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) in the reduced risk of cancer, researchers at the National Chung Hsing University conducted an experiment to examine the effects of the phytochemical in the brain cancer cells.
In compared to other cancer cell lines inhibition, AITC significantly decreased proliferation and viability of human brain malignant glioma GBM 8401 cells in a dose-dependent manner with IC50 9.25+/-0.69 microM for 24 h-treatment.
In cell differentiated assay, AITC induced significantly G2/M arrest and sub-G1 phase (apoptotic population) in GBM 8401 cells.
AITC markedly reduced the CDK1/cyclin B activity and protein levels which are responsible for cancer cell proliferation and survival.
Furthermore, AITC-induced apoptotic cell death through enhancing the proteins associated with cells death programming.
Dr. Chen NG, the lead scientists at the final report, said, "AITC is a potent anti-human brain malignant glioma drug and it shows a remarkable action on cell cycle arrest before a commitment for apoptosis is reached".
Taken altogether, it is safe to suggest that Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be used as chemopreventive and functional phytochemical for high-risk of brain cancer individual and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of brain cancer.

Eggplant, Night Shape Veggie Which Processes the Potential for the Prevention and Treatment Type 2 Diabetes
Eggplant, the night shape fruit or vegetable may have a strong effect in reducing risk and treatment of type 2 diabetes, some researchers suggested.
Type 2 diabetes is a condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.
The condition of insulin resistance is either caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.
According to the US statistic in 2015, approximately 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes. and 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes.
Some researchers suggested that the widespread of type 2 diabetes in the US was associated with the promotion of the Western diet which has been found to complicate the risk of insulin receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol, affecting the receptor in absorbing and releasing insulin from and to the body.
Dr. Merat S, the lead scientist in the study of a group of mice involved the Western diet risk of insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia wrote, "The Western diet group had higher average glucose levels (187+/-16 versus 159+/-12 mg/dL) and 4.5-fold higher plasma insulin levels".and "the Western diets commonly used in LDLR-/- mice may not only induce atherosclerosis, but also IR, potentially complicating the interpretation of results".
These results firmly suggested long-term followers of the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables are the main culprits for the onset of insulin resistance, the early stage of type 2 diabetes.
Therefore, by the change to a healthy diet that reduces the intake of total fat (saturated fatty acids in particular) and increases intake of dietary fiber by consuming more vegetables and fruits and whole grain cereal products, diabetes is preventable.
Dr. Matti Uusitupa, MD, in the article of "Lifestyles Matter in the Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes" quoted, "In a Swedish uncontrolled study shown that an increase in physical activity and moderate weight loss reduced the incidence of type 2 diabetes by 50% in middle-aged men with IGT" and
"In a Chinese study of IGT patients, 6-year interventions with diet, physical activity, and diet plus physical activity resulted in an approximate 30–40% reduction in diabetes risk in both normal weight and overweight persons".
Eggplant is a species of S. melongena, belonging to the family Solanaceae and native to India, cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory.
The vegetable is famous with its deep purple and the best eggplant can be found from August through October when it is in the season. While it's generally thought of as a vegetable, eggplant is actually a fruit.
Chemical constituents
The vegetable chemical compounds containing include sterols (i.e. typical plant sterols, androstane, pregnane and cholestane derivatives, steroidal alkaloids, and sapogenins), phytosterols, triterpenes, δ-amyrin, Chlorogenic acid, Nasunin, and other Polyphenolic compounds.
In the concerns of the widespread of type 2 diabetes among American, researchers launched an investigation to examine the National Diabetes Education Program of NIH, Mayo Clinic and American Diabetes Association recommendation of eggplant-based diet as a choice for management of type 2 diabetes.
The recommendation is based on the rationale is the high fiber and low soluble carbohydrate content of eggplant.
Application of phenolic-enriched extracts of eggplant showed a moderate free radical scavenging-linked antioxidant activity and high alpha-glucosidase inhibition by preventing the glucosidase in breaking down starch and disaccharides to glucose and moderate to high angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition activity in the prevention of β-cell dysfunction and apoptosis occurring in type 2diabetes.
By inhibiting these enzymes researchers suggested that intake of eggplant should provide a strong biochemical basis for management of type 2 diabetes by controlling glucose absorption.
Dr.Kwon YI, the lead author said, "phenolic antioxidant-enriched dietary strategy also has the potential to reduce hyperglycemia-induced pathogenesis linked to cellular oxidation stress".
Further analysis of the phenolic antioxidant in the eggplant, researchers conducted an experiment on the member chlorogenic acids (CGAs) on chronic diseases including diabetes, by searching the database of online medical literature.
* The biological properties of CGA in addition to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects was found in some studies.
* CGA was found to exert pivotal roles on glucose and lipid metabolism regulation and on the related disorders, e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity, cancer, and hepatic steatosis.
* CGA demonstrated a wide range of potential health benefits, including its anti-diabetic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity impacts, may provide a non-pharmacological and non-invasive approach.
Taken altogether, eggplant processed a high amount of phenolic compound may be considered a functional vegetable in the prevention of type 2 diabetes and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of the disease.

White Button Mushroom, The Potential Anti Colon Cancer Functional Food, Scientists Say
Scientists may have found an edible mushroom with the potential in reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.
Primary colon cancer is a medical condition characterized the cell growth regularly that starts on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the colon.
After proliferating to the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can dispatch from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs far the way from the colon.
The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. As of today, researchers still wonder, why people with the same health condition, family history, and diet, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.
According to the statistic, colorectal cancer(cancer that starts in the colon or rectum) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the United States. About 71% of cases arise in the colon and about 29% in the rectum.
Dr. Milly Ryan-Harshman, in the study of Diet and colorectal cancer, suggested, "Whether red meat is a culprit in causing CRC remains unanswered, although any effect it might have is likely moderate and related to processing or cooking"
"The effect of dietary fiber on risk of CRC has also been difficult to determine because fiber intake is generally low. Evidence that folic acid, calcium, and vitamin D reduce the risk of CRC is stronger"
" In particular, recent research indicates that calcium and vitamin D might act together, rather than separately, to reduce the risk of colorectal adenomas. There might also be an interaction between low folate levels and high alcohol consumption and CRC".
These result indicated a reduced intake of red meat, increase intake of nutrients from the fruits and vegetable including folic calcium and vitamin D are associated with the substantially reduced risk of colon cancer.
However, in the study conducted by the team lead by Dr. Dana-Farber, Cancer Center oncologist Jeffrey Meyerhardt, MD appeared in the Aug. 15 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Western diet not only associate to the colon cancer risk but also elevate the risk of recurrent colon cancer in colon cancer patients.
Mushroom is a standard name of white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source,
It is a genus A. Muscaria and belong to the family Amanitaceae and has been cultivated in many cultures all over the world for foods and health benefits.
Chemical constituents of white button mushroom include
Astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil and D-mannitol(a).
Intake of dietary supplementation with Se-enriched white button mushroom can reduce the production of antioxidant produced by the colon tumor by up-regulating the integrity of cell mRNA expression levels.
Se-enriched white button mushroom inhibited the colon cancer cell by stimulating the production of GPx-1 and 2 and anti-antioxidant enzyme activity.
Selenite white button mushroom can positively increase GPx-1 and GPx-2 gene expression and GPx-1 enzyme activity in rat colon cells in the protection of cell DNA alternation due to overexpression free radicals, Dr. Maseko T, the leader in the team at the The University of Melbourne suggested at the final report.
The study was published in the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM).
Furthermore, in the reassessment of the 2 epidemiological studies that demonstrated an inverse correlation between mushroom intake and the risk of cancer, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate whether white button mushroom affects the growth of breast and colon cancer cells.
Application of white button mushroom suppressed proliferation of colon cancer (HT-29, HCT-116) cells, without affecting proliferation of epithelial mammary MCF-10A and normal colon FHC cells.
The inhibition of cell proliferation by the mushroom was associated with the cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase in HT-29 cells.
White button mushroom was also found to up-regulated expression of p21 in the induction of apoptosis and inhibited Rb phosphorylation, a tumor suppressor protein in HT-29 cells,
The finding confirmed the results from the 2 epidemiological studies that white button mushroom process anti-colon cancer possibility.
Taken all together, dietary white button mushroom intake daily and regularly may have a significant effect in the prevention colon and combined with the primary therapy in the treatment of colon cancer

Fennel, The Natural Free Radical Scavenger, Scientists Find
Fennel may be the next generative functional food with the potency in blocking the overexpression of free radical in the induction of chronic illness, some scientists suggested.
Free radicals are the highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron that cause oxidation by stealing an electron from other molecules to give rise of a chain activity. Once free radical starts its domino effect, it can not be stopped until two free radical species react with each other to form a stable, non-radical adduct or inhibited by the presence of antioxidants.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.
The relationship between free radicals and antioxidant are summarized by Dr. V. Lobo, the lead author in the study "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health ", "A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues. Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases. Hence application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping this oxidative stress".
These explanations suggested that intake of antioxidants from the food sources in the stimulation of antioxidant enzymes in the body are benefits in maintaining good health, However, the doctors continued, "Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health. Thus, the search for effective, nontoxic natural compounds with antioxidative activity has been intensified in recent years".
Overexpression of free radicals or imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body can initiate oxidative stress. A prolonged period of oxidative stress in the human body plays a major part in the development of chronic and degenerative illness such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, aging, cataract, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
The functional herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...
Fennel is an excellent source of natural antioxidants and contributed to the daily antioxidant diet. The functional food is found to process a free radical scavenging activity, particularly in the application of its phenolic and flavonoid.
In the examine the effects of fennel essential oil in the presence of overexpression of free radicals, researchers found, injection of the oil exerts a strong antioxidant activity in comparison with butyrated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene., however, injection of ethanol and water extracts of fennel showed less effective compared to the essential oil.
Furthermore, in the evaluation of the essential oils of the fruits of three organically grown cultivars of Egyptian fennel (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum, Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce and Foeniculum vulgare var. vulgare) in antibacterial and antioxidant effects, researchers showed that all three cultivars contain a great source of trans-Anethole, estragole, fenchone, and limonene.
All phytochemicals demonstrated significant activity in free radical scavenging, in the inhibited lipid peroxidation and metal chelation.
Additional differentiation suggested that essential oils from the azoricum and dulce cultivars were more effective antioxidants than that from the vulgare cultivar and essential oils from 3 species display similar antimicrobial activities against two species of fungi, two species of Gram-negative and two species of Gram-positive bacteria.
More importantly, in the examine the effect of essential oil of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) lipophilic secondary metabolites, researchers at the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University, discovered that
* The oil exhibited moderate antioxidant activities.
* The antioxidants in the essential oil are found to protect the healthy cells and stimulate the expression of free radical in exerting cytotoxic activity against HeLa (human cervical cancer), Caco-2 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma), MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma), CCRF-CEM (human T lymphoblast leukemia) and CEM/ADR5000 (adriamycin resistant leukemia) cancer cell lines;
* The most effective of the IC50 values are between 30-210 mg L-1.
These result suggested essential oil from fennel processed a great source of antioxidants with the function of balancing the ratio of free radicals in the body, thus preventing the initiation of oxidative stress.

Herbal Catnip Essential Oil, The Natural Antibiotic Alternative with No Side Effects
Herbal catnip was found to process certain chemical compounds which stimulate the immune function against microbial organisms in the acute and chronic phase of infection, some scientists suggested.
In human, anti-microbial activity is a natural reaction in which the macrophages of the immune system in the response to the early phase of infection stimulate the production of inflammatory cytokines which have a unique function in killing off foreign pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.
In plants, antimicrobial substances produced by the plant are served as plant defense mechanisms against predation by microorganisms.
However, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines in many cases can mistakenly cause damage of healthy cells and tissue in the site of infection, leading to abnormal skin and scars formation.
There are 2 types of inflammatory cytokines: the proinflammatory (Isuch as IL-1β, IL-6. and TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory (such as IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-11) cytokines. Some cytokines process a duo inflammatory (such as IL-6) functions, under normal conditions, they act as the anti-inflammatory agents to protect against inflammation. Once they sense the danger to the body, they can quickly switch to pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia.
The functional herb has been used in herbal medicine as an insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children restlessness and nervousness, fevers, cold and flu, skin irritation, stimulate sweating, promote menstruation, etc..
Ingredients
Besides, having the major constituent of terpenoid nepetalactone, the herb also contains α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Triplal, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc.
In the finding of the natural alternatives in replacement of traditional antibiotics with no side effects, researchers at the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences launched an evaluation to examine the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil derived from herbal Catnip.
Chemical 4a-α, 7-α, 7a-β-nepetalactone (55-58%), and 4a-α, 7-β, 7a-α-nepetalactone (30-31.2%) isolated from the essential oil were effective in exerting their antimicrobial activity against all tested bacteria at concentrations of 0.125-4 μL/mL and the growth of Candida species at a concentration less than 1 μL/mL.
The essential oil chemical constituent nepetalactones are also found to process anti antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal and antioxidant activities.
Terpenenes or terpenoids found abundant in Catnip are active against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. According to the 1977 report, 60% of essential oil derivatives derived from terpenoids demonstrated inhibition of fungi and while only 30% inhibited bacteria.
Furthermore, the extract of catnip also displayed inhibitory activity on growth, enzyme production and adhesion of some bacteria.
Moreover, the essential oil extract from Catnip also exhibited the anti bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 8 μL/mL.
All of the Gram-negative bacteria were susceptible to the Catnip oils at concentrations of 0.25–32 μL/mL
The essential oil of Catnip from different growth stages exhibited bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities against the Shigella and Salmonella species at concentrations of 0.25–2 μL/mL and 0.5–8 μL/mL, respectively.
Additionally, the essential oil inhibited the growth of the standard species of Aspergillus at a concentration of 0.25–1 μL/mL.
In the comparison of the antibacterial effect of some herbs, including Catnip, researchers found that Lavender oil is more effective in the exhibited antibacterial ability than the Catnip essential oil, probably based on the concept of synergistic values of essential oil components.
Nevertheless, only a few published reports are available regarding the antimicrobial effects of the catnip EOs, especially against food-borne and resistant microorganisms, Dr. Zomorodian K, the lead author suggested.
Taken altogether, the essential oil derived from catnip may be considered an adjunct therapy for treatment of microbial infection.
Today, mainstream medicine antibiotics have become less effective as many viral and bacteria have developed resistance to the application due to being overused.
Secondary metabolites of plants processed antimicrobial properties with no side effects have been promoted by some companies as natural alternatives to antibiotics. The general public must be aware that many of these compounds are currently available as unregulated botanical preparations.
Please make sure that you follow the guideline of the product closely, as acute liver toxicity has been reported in some cases.

Green Tea and Its Bioactive Polyphenols Inhibit Alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) Deficiency Against the Onset of Fibromyalgia
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing onset. progression and treatment of Alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency in the induced fibromyalgia, some scientists suggested.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain, affecting over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people the in the US alone.
Serum of alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) impregnated in most parts of body circulates in our body in high concentrations with function in the inhibition of the enzymes of inflammatory cells.
Alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency is a genetic disorder inherited from the parent characterized by of the inability of the body to produce a protein called alpha-1 anti-trypsin (AAT), leading to inflammation of fatty tissue under the skin (subcutaneous), and at other parts of the body, including the joints, the major cause of fibromyalgia.
Additionally, deficiency of AAT enynes also can cause the liver and lung damage, leading to poor function of the organ and increasing the risk of cirrhosis, COPD, liver and lung cancer.
Although the deficiency is presented since birth, most patients with mutated gene do not experience any symptoms until the age of 50 or 60.
According to the statistic, AAT deficiency is one of the most common inherited disorders among Caucasian compared to other race groups.
Approximately over 1% of patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) processes the alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency gene
In the study of the effect of serum of alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) and risk of fibromyalgia (FM), researchers at the Hospital Valle del Nalón found that deficiency of AAT has been found in numbers of patients with fibromyalgia (FM) with severe hereditary.
Functional magnetic resonance imaging of these patients revealed significantly greater activity in pain-sensitive areas of the brain in response to cutaneous stimuli, which may be another evidence for a physiological explanation for FM pain.
Furthermore, patients with FM also were found to consist of abnormal profiles of inflammation markers in biopsies analysis.
The results suggested that these patients may have an imbalance level of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory substances, in the soft body tissues caused by alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency.
Due to surprising findings, Dr. Blanco LE, the lead author, after taking into account of other confounders, said, "identification of genetic, familial, and environmental risk factors suspected to participate in the FM syndrome development (may be necessary) to determine the gene frequency of AAT deficiency alleles in FM patients".
Green tea, bioactive polyphenols EGCG, according to the Dr Helieh S in animal model induced by alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) (α1-antitrypsin) deficiency exerted a significant anti-inflammatory effect in inhibited the PI3K/Akt signalling pathway with function in activated proinflammatory factors through the innate immune response involved in pathogen killing, antigen processing and immune cell survival.
Moreover, green tea EGCG application also enhanced antioxidant activity not only through its antioxidant profiles but also stimulated the production of the body natural antioxidants in reduced inflammatory response through nitric oxide (NO) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, observed by Griess reagent and western blotting.
The evidence indicated that green tea EGCG may have a profound effect in reducing serum alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency in initiated the onset of fibromyalgia
The above differentiations were supported by the review of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases and Green Tea Polyphenol, by Dr. Helieh S. Oz at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
According to the authors, green tea polyphenols are potent antioxidants with important roles in regulating vital signaling pathways in activated inflammatory responses by attenuating nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB IKK, NF-κB in facilitated innate- and adaptive immune responses, cell death and inflammation and cytokines like TNFα, inflammatory markers and cyclooxygenase-2 in elevated symptoms of inflammation and pain.
Dr. Helieh S. in the summary said, "green tea polyphenols (GrTPs) are potent antioxidants with important roles in regulating vital signaling pathways" and "these comprise transcription nuclear factor-kappa B mediated I kappa B kinase complex pathways, programmed cell death pathways like caspases and B-cell lymphoma-2 (through regulating the cytochrome c release from the mitochondria) and intervention with the surge of inflammatory markers like cytokines and production of cyclooxygenase-2"".
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered as a functional food in ameliorated serum alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency effect in initiated the onset of fibromyalgia. However, intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent medical reports of acute liver toxicity.
