Phytochemical Triterpenoid Which Inhibits Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Nonalcoholic Fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition of the fatty liver diseases as a result of accumulated of fat in the liver over time, not caused by abusive alcohol consumption.

Most patients in the early stage of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease do not experience any symptoms until the disease has advanced to the critical stage.

According to the statistic, NAFLD is the most common cause of liver disease in the Western world.

Most diseases associated with NAFLD are obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

People with insulin resistant, diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood fat levels and/or the metabolic syndrome, are associated with an increased risk of NAFLD.

Other risk factors on the incidence of NAFLD are the increase in age, ethnicity and family history.

Believe or not, people who carry certain mutated gene also at a higher risk of the disease. Dr. Silvia Sookoian in the concern of the global epidemic risk of Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common chronic liver disease wrote, "Although the disease is relatively benign in the early stages, when severe clinical forms, including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis and even hepatocellular carcinoma, occur, they result in worsening the long-term prognosis.".

And, " A growing body of evidence indicates that NAFLD develops from a complex process in which many factors, including genetic susceptibility and environmental insults, are involved".

Triterpenoid is various unsaturated hydrocarbons, found in essential oils and oleoresins of plants, including Ilex hainanensis Merr.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with no side effects, researchers at the China Pharmaceutical University evaluated the effect of the triterpenoid-rich fraction (TF) from Ilex hainanensis Merr. on NAFLD in an animal model.

The study included Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats fed a normal diet (control) or high-fat diet (NAFLD model) 4 four weeks, following by the orally administrated TF (250 mg/kg) for another two weeks.

Before application of TF compound, rats fed a high-fat diet displayed an abnormally high blood cholesterol levels and a decline in liver function compared to control.

Application of TF on these rats not only restores the health issues caused by high-fat diet but also decreased the expression of plasma levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Levels of alanine transaminase (p < 0.05), aspartate aminotransferase (p < 0.01), liver index (p < 0.05), the indication of liver oxidative stress and insulin resistance index (p < 0.05) were also decreased by TF adminsitration.

Futhermore, TF improved the liver lesions induced by the high-fat diet.

Moreover, TF injection also alleviated oxidative stress and inflammation status indicated by the decline levels of oxidative markers, free radicals, and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Dr. Cui WX, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "TF has the potential ability to protect the liver against NAFLD by regulating lipids metabolism and alleviating insulin resistance, inflammation and oxidative stress".

Additionally, the study to reconfirm the traditional use of herbal Ilex hainanensis Merr. for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, researchers examine the compound Chlorogenic acid, kaempferol-7-O-β-d-glucoside, and ilexgenin, a novel triterpenoid, the three major bioactive components in I. hainanensis extract.

Compared to normal rats, application of I. hainanensis extract exerted a significant change in NAFLD rats.

The efficacy of the herbal extract was attributed to the anti-NAFLD activity of chlorogenic acid, kaempferol-7-O-β-d-glucoside, and ilexgenin A.

Taken altogether, phytochemical Triterpenoid may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty disease pending to the large sample size and multicenter human study.

Anacardic Acid, A Bioactive Ingredient Which Processes Anti Lung Cancer Potential

Anacardic acids may be considered a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, some scientists found.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. Most cases of primary lung cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of lung tissue.

At the early stage, most patients do not experience any symptoms. However, as cancer continues to advance, it can put pressure on the nearby healthy tissue such as blood vessel and nerve cell, leading to localized symptoms and severe pain.

At the later stage, lung cancells can also travel through blood and fluids circulation to infect other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the 2007 statistic, the most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells. In the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, causing 158,683 people deaths, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women.

The most common form of lung cancer metastasis is brain cancer, according to the statistic, approximately, 40 percent of people with advanced lung cancer will develop brain cancer sometimes during the disease.

The causes of lung cancer are unknown. However, epidemiologically suggested that although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of lung cancers, smoking tobacco, and second-hand smoke are considered the most risk of the diseases.

Other risk factors include radon asbestos, occupational exposure to certain chemicals, outdoor air pollution, personal or family history of lung cancer, personal history of lung disease and long-term exposure to radiation.

Dr. Muhammad Furrukh, in the concern of tobacco smoking in the risk of lung cancer, said, "Tobacco smoking remains the most established cause of lung carcinogenesis and other disease processes" and "Over the last 50 years, tobacco refinement and the introduction of filters have brought a change in histology, and now adenocarcinoma has become the most prevalent subtype"

"Over the last decade, smoking also has emerged as a strong prognostic and predictive patient characteristic along with other variables".

Anacardic acids are phenolic lipids, phytochemicals of the organic acid found abundantly in cashews, mangoes, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, researchers looked into the anti-lung cancer effect of anacardic acid (AA), a constituent of the cashew nutshell.

Application of the chemical compound exerted a strong cytotoxic activity against A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells, through the expression of reactive oxidative spices.

AA also activated the proteins associated with cells apoptosis in A549 cells.

Furthermore, in the study of the efficacy of AA against cancer cells, researchers looked into the role of the expression of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) during the cancer inhibition.

Application of AA exerted a strong anti-cancer effect through a series of mechanisms, including induced cancer cells apoptosis by overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines correlated with the inhibition of various gene products associated with cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Moreover, the application of AA also blocked the formation of new blood vessels induced by the tumor.

The finding suggested that AA inhibits the function of NF-κB, a protein complex in controlling the transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival.

Dr. Sung B, after taking into account co and confounders said, " (There is) a novel role for anacardic acid in potentially preventing or treating cancer through modulation of the NF-kappaB signaling pathway".

Taken altogether, Anacardic acid (AA) may be used for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ginger, The Potent Anti Alzheimer's disease Inhibitor, Scientists Say

Ginger may be the next pharmaceutical target to extract a single ingredient medicine for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, some scientists found.

Alzheimer's disease is a common neurodegenerative disease in the elderly characterized by slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the daily tasks.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Alzheimer’s disease falls sixth on the list of leading causes of death in the United States.

The average time from diagnosis to death was about four years.

Alzheimer's disease is also increased with an increase in age. In the total of 2,566 people, ages 65 and older under the test of dementia, 559 participants without dementia at the start of the study developed Alzheimer’s disease.

Most common causes of Alzheimer's disease are a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors.

However, aging is one most risk factors associated with the onset of the disease in the elderly. Statistics show, the number of people with the disease doubles every 5 years beyond age 65. About one-third of all people age 85 and older may have Alzheimer's disease.

Some researchers suggested that the increase in age and risk of Alzheimer's disease can be attributed to the shrinking of certain parts of the brain, and long-term low-grade inflammation, neuron damage induced by oxidative stress due to overexpression of free radicals.

Dr. Tuppo EE, the lead author of the neuro team at the Western University of Health Sciences said, "There is increasing evidence that free radical-induced oxidative damage may play a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Free radicals are reactive oxygen compounds that may attack and damage lipids, proteins, and DNA".

And, "The brain is especially sensitive to oxidative damage because of its high content of readily oxidized fatty acids, high use of oxygen, and low levels of antioxidants".

These results clearly suggested that people who follow a healthy diet with high antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables, whole grain and fewer in red meat and processed foods may have a substantially lower risk of Alzheimer's diseases.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On finding the natural ingredient and whole food with a potential effect on patients with Alzheimer's disease, researchers looked into Ginger (Zingiber officinale), a common dietary adjunct that not contributes to the taste and flavor of foods, but also contain a number of potentially bioactive phytochemicals having valuable medicinal properties.

The differentiation of the binding interactions between active ginger components and various anti-Alzheimer drug targets, researchers suggested the approach could be a promising computational tool to aid optimization of lead compounds obtained from the ginger.

The hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions of ligands isolated from ginger showed to target acetylcholinesterase, the functioning neurotransmitters, and receptors c-Jun N-terminal kinase which plays an important role in the onset of cognitive impairment.

Additionally, researchers found that all isolated compound is satisfied the Lipinski's rule of five, making them potentially promising drug candidates for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Where Lipinski's rule of five is simply the rule of five (RO5) is a rule to determine if a chemical compound with a certain pharmacological or biological activity has chemical properties.

Moreover, the in-depth investigation of the possible mechanisms of action of these compounds against the AD, scientists compared 4 bioactive compounds isolated from ginger to inhibitors of human acetylcholinesterase (HssAChE), the HssAChE inhibitor and commercial drug in use against the AD, donepezil (DNP).

Unsurprisingly, two among the compounds studied: (E)-1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) hept-4-en-3-on and 1-(3,4-dihydroxy-5-methoxyphenyl)-7-(4-hydroxy-3- ethoxyphenyl) heptane-3,5-diycl diacetate, are considered promising new HssAChE inhibitors that could be as effective as DNP.

Based on these results, researchers said, "the binding of the studied compounds in the different binding pockets inside HssAChE and established the preferred interactions to be favored in the design of new and more efficient inhibitors".

Taken altogether, ginger processed abundant bioactive compounds that act as acetylcholinesterase (HssAChE) inhibitor may be used as a functional food for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease without inducing any side effects.

Honey, The Potential Food for Obesity Control

Compared to an ideal weight, that reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, body weight greater than 20 percent is considered obese.

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat has accumulated over time, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to the height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

Epidemiological studies in the investigation of the complication of obesity found that cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, accelerated atherosclerosis, and stroke... and chronic lower back pain are most common disease complications associated with obesity.

According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2013–2014, more than 1 in 3 and 13 adults in the US were considered to have obesity and extreme obesity, respectively.

Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of the disease, some researchers suggested an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major causes of obesity in the Western world.

Dr. Robert F. Kushner, in the examination of the unhealthy lifestyle risk of obesity of the 53‐item lifestyle pattern questionnaire posted on a commercial weight loss program Web site collected from 2004 through 2008, wrote, "unhealthy lifestyle patterns in diet, exercise, and coping were highly prevalent among this population".

The results findings clearly suggested a strong correlation between diet, exercise, and obesity.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In the urgency to find a natural remedy for the treatment of widespread obesity in the Western world, researchers evaluated the potential of honey consumption in controlling obesity.

The study compared the two local Malaysian honey types: Gelam and Acacia honey activities in reducing excess weight gain and other parameters related to obesity.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats selected to the study were induced obese by a high-fat diet (HFD) prior to introduction with/without honey or orlistat for four weeks.

Rats fed with Gelam honey showed significant reductions in excess weight gain and adiposity index compared to HFD rats.

Furthermore, parameters related to obesity such as levels of plasma glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol, plasma leptin and resistin, liver enzymes, renal function, and relative organ weight in Gelam and Acacia honey treated groups were reduced significantly, compared to obese rats.

Compared to the treatment of orlistat, Gelam and Acacia honey showed similar results without inducing hepatotoxicity effects.

Hepatotoxicity is a known side effect of orlistat.

Where Orlistat is a drug used for the treatment of obesity, sold over-the-counter as Alli by GlaxoSmithKline in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Dr. Samat S, the lead scientists wrote in the final report, "consumption of honey can be used to control obesity by regulating lipid metabolism and appears to be more effective than orlistat".

Taken altogether, hiney, particularly Gelam and Acacia honey may be considered anti-obesity functional remedies with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ginger, the Natural Anti Male Infertility Functional Remedy

Fertility is a natural capacity for producing offspring.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, all women with no reproductive structure problems in the childbearing year are once fertile. However, due to many reasons such as the use of contraceptive, and workplace stress, some women and men have developed unexplained causes of infertility.

Unexplained causes of infertility is a condition of not getting pregnant in a couple without knowing causes.

Infertility is a condition that a female of a couple cannot get pregnant after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse, including those cannot carry the pregnancy to term.

According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the United States ages 15-44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant compared to 5-6% of males are infertile,

In males, although the sperm in the male reproductive organ does not change much, the quality and quantity of sperm may be reduced by low levels of testosterone due to aging.

These explained why a couple in their late 20's is easier to conceive than a couple with a wife in her 20's and a husband at the age of 40 and more.

According to the study of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, the rate of miscarriage also increases substantially when the father was over the age of 35.
1. Nearly 17 percent if the father was over 34 years old.

2. Around 20 percent if the father was between the ages of 35 and 39.

3. Over 32 percent if the father was older than 44.

In fact, the odds of male fertility rate decreases at an alarming rate of 11% every year and the chance for his partner to conceive declines even further over the past few decades.

The results strongly suggested that if you follow a healthy diet with nutrients diet by focusing on calories, macronutrients, you may delay the process of biological aging, including the reproductive organs.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of male infertility examined the effects of ginger (Zingiber officinale) on sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) in infertile men.

This randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with a 1:1 allocation included 100 selected infertility candidates who were admitted to Royan Institute for Reproductive Biomedicine, Tehran, Iran.

Patients were randomly assigned to receive either ginger given a 3-month oral treatment (members received capsules containing 250 mg of ginger powder twice a day in ginger or placebo.

By analyzing the sperm concentration, motility, and SDF from the standardized semen samples before and after treatment, according to the World Health Organization, researchers found that
according to the multivariate analysis, patients receiving ginger (17.77, 95%CI: 6.16-29.39) was found to have a lower average positive percentage of SDF in compared with placebo, after three months of treatment without affecting the semen parameters.

In other words, ginger improves male fertility by decreasing SDF in infertile men.

Where SDF assay is a better diagnostic potential in evaluating the male infertilities, particularly in those with unexplained cause of infertility.

Researchers in the differentiation of the role of sperm DNA fragmentation in male factor infertility
wrote, "The significant role of SDF in male factor infertility is supported by current evidence. The beneficial role of SDF testing in the selection of varicocelectomy candidates, evaluation of patients with unexplained infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss, selection of the most appropriate assisted reproductive technique with the highest success rate for infertile couples, and assessment of infertile men with modifiable lifestyle factors or gonadotoxin exposure has been recently proposed".

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the improvement of male fertility, pending to the confirmation of larger sample sized and multicenter human study.

Berberine Reverses Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOs), Human Studies Show

Scientists may have discovered a bioactive and plan base ingredient for the prevention and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) with no side effects, according to studies.

The polycystic ovarian syndrome is an endocrinologic disease caused by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interfere with the function of the normal ovaries as resulting of enlarged ovaries.

Women with PCOs are found to produce an excessive amount of androgen, leading to a male pattern hair development, acne, irregular period or absence of period, weight gain and infertility.

The condition affects over 5% of women population or 1 in 20 women. However, the actual numbers may be substantial high because a large percentage of women in the early stage of PCOs are undiagnosed.

Some researchers suggested that women with PCOs are at a higher risk of the onset of diabetes and heart disease.

What cause PCOs? Why some women are more susceptible to the incidence and others do not even they have the same health condition and family history? No researchers can answer this question.

However, they do know according to the epidemiological studies that people who carry mutated gene inherited from the parent, with chronic inflammatory disease and having insulin resistance are at the increased risk of PCOs.

Treatment of PCOs can vary and totally depend on the range of symptoms, or just one.

Some researchers suggested that lifestyle change may be the best for reducing the symptoms in women with PCOs. Weight loss of just 5% can lead to a significant improvement in PCOS symptoms.

Dr. Sedigheh Sedigh in the study to compare the lifestyle in women With polycystic ovary syndrome and healthy women said, "there was a significant relationship between PCOS and inappropriate diet (p=0.009), low physical activity (p=0.009), but no relationship was observed between PCOS and unhealthy behaviors".

These results clearly suggested that women who follow the Western diet with lack of exercise are associated with a substantial risk of PCOs. In other words, a change to a healthy lifestyle has a strong impact in reducing the incidence onset for women without PCOs and symptoms for women with PCOs.

Berberine is a phytochemical found in the group of protoberberine group of isoquinoline alkaloids, in many herbal plants including Oregon grape, barberry, turmeric, goldenseal, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of the reproductive and metabolic disorder associated with insulin resistance (IR) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), researchers at the Harbin Medical University examine the potential therapeutic value of berberine (BBR)for PCOS.

The study included 49 wone with PCOS and IR randomized assigned into one of three treatment groups: BBR+compound cyproterone acetate (CPA; n=31), MET+CPA (n=30), and placebo+CPA (n=28) for 3 months.

After 3 months, BBR treatment group showed a decrease in waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR; P<0.01), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C; P<0.05) as well as increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) compared to MET group.

Compared to the placebo, the BBR group demonstrated a similar effect as in the comparison with the control group.

These results suggested that BBR Intake of BBR improved some of the metabolic and hormonal derangements in a group of treated Chinese women with PCOS.

Dr. Wei W, the lead author in the final report wrote, "Main effects (of BBR) could be related to the changes in body composition in obesity and dyslipidemia."

Furthermore, in order to reconfirm the effect of Berberine in PCOs subjects, researchers launched a review of the photochemical activity on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients with insulin resistance (IR).

The search od the database of medical literature for the randomized controlled trials in human beings up to July 2018, found a total of 9 randomized controlled trials satisfied the guidelines and criteria.

Berberine not only showed an effect in lowering blood sugar levels in db/db mice and anti-dyslipidemia inhuman.

Berberine exerted the similar effects similar to those of metformin (MET) in alleviating insulin resistance, improving glycolipid metabolism, or reproductive endocrine condition.

MET combined with BBR was not superior to MET alone, but cyproterone acetate (CPA) combined with BBR was superior to CPA alone in improving some of the reproductive endocrine indices.

The combination of BBR and Chinese herbs also showed a positive effect on all the parameters mentioned above.

Dr. Meng-Fei Li, the lead scientist, at the final report, said, "BBR showed a promising prospect in treating PCOS-IR"

Although the results indicated that Berberine has a potential effect on the treatment of metabolic and hormonal derangements in women with PCOs, due to the limitation of the studies, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Berberine anti PCOs possibilities.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance which is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed for our body to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques built up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

More precisely, if levels of low-density lipoprotein are high compared to high-density lipoprotein which returns the accessed cholesterol back to the liver, you have high blood cholesterol.

In other words, healthy blood cholesterol is any levels with either less than or equal to 4 (low-density lipoprotein/ 1 (high-density lipoprotein).

According to the statistics, in 2015-2016, by age and gender, a total of 12.4 percent of adults aged 20 years and over had high cholesterol in the United States.

Although there are many risk factors such as obesity, large waist circumference, physically inactive, smoking and diabetes associated with the onset of high blood cholesterol, researchers suggested that a poor diet with rich in saturated and trans fat, processed foods is the major cause of high blood cholesterol in the Western world.

Dr. Joan Carles Escolà-Gil and colleagues in the concern about the Western diet pattern in risk of high blood cholesterol wrote, "The HFHC diet caused a significant increase in plasma cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and liver cholesterol and enhanced macrophage-derived [3H]cholesterol flux to feces by 3- to 4-fold, (in tested mice)".

And, " The HFHC diet caused 1.4- and 3-fold increases in [3H]cholesterol efflux to plasma and HDL-derived [3H]tracer fecal excretion".

The results strongly indicated there is a clinical significance of a high-fat diet in the increased substantially risk of high blood cholesterol.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsacutin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.

Researchers on finding herbal medicine for the treatment of high blood cholesterol examined the antihyperlipidemic effects of capsaicinoids, the active compounds in chili pepper.

Hamsters selected to the study were divided into five groups and fed a high-cholesterol diet containing 0 % (CON), 0.010 % (LD), 0.015 % (MD), 0.020 % (HD), and 0.030 % (VD) capsaicinoids, respectively, for 6 weeks.

Capsaicinoids reduced plasma total cholesterol, non-high-density lipoprotein, and triacylglycerols without affecting the levels of high-density lipoprotein.

Dietary capsaicinoids increased the fecal excretion of total acidic sterols possibly associated with an enzyme which oxidizes cholesterol and inhibited the liver X receptor alpha which was found to raised HDL-cholesterol and increased liver triglycerides in a wild-type mice study.

Furthermore, capsaicinoids not only decreased cholesterol absorption but also improved the levels of expression of COX-2 associated with the accumulation of lipids in circulation and liver, and lipid peroxidation in case of deficiency.

Dr. Liang YT, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "Capsaicinoids were beneficial in improving lipoprotein profile and aortic function in hamsters fed a high-cholesterol diet".

Moreover, in female ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats, the sham group and OVX control group were fed with high-cholesterol diets, whereas the treatment group (control diet containing 0.01% capsaicinoids) was fed with high-cholesterol plus 0.01% capsaicinoids diet for 21 days.

Injection of capsaicinoids significantly decreased the body weight gain, plasma total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triacylglycerol without affecting the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the OVX rats.
These changes in plasma lipoprotein profile were accompanied by a greater excretion of total bile acid in feces and small intestinal contents.

The efficacy of the compound in the inhibition of high blood cholesterol was attributed to the significantly enhanced the expressions of hepatic cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase, an enzyme and receptor potential vanilloid type-1 associated with cholesterol oxidation.

Dr. Zhang L, the lead researchers wrote in the final report, "The hypocholesterolemic activity of capsaicinoids is caused by the stimulating conversion of cholesterol to bile acids by upregulation of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase expression and the increase in fecal total bile acid excretion".

Taken altogether, herbal cayenne processed major bioactive ingredient capsaicinoids may be considered a function fruit for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending to the
larger sample size and multicenter human study.
