Green Tea, in Reduced Risk of Early Onset and Progression of Dementia

Dementia is the loss of mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people. About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age.

Green tea may be used as a functional food for the prevention of early-onset and treatment of dementia due to aging progression, a renowned institute study suggested

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome", according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the neutralization trick.

In the 5.7-year prospective cohort study, using a questionnaire, information on daily green tea consumption and other lifestyle factors collected from elderly Japanese individuals aged 65 years or more, green tea consumption is associated to a reduced risk of dementia with an incidence of the occurrent rate of 8.7%.

Furthermore, in the intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of streptozotocin (STZ) animal model explicated chronic brain dysfunction involved long-term and progressive deficits in learning, memory, and cognitive behavior, along with a permanent and ongoing cerebral energy deficit, mice treated with green tea EGCG at a dose of 10mg/kg/day for 4 weeks, showed a significant improvement in reduced oxidative stress parameter against production of inflammatory and free radical expression.

These inhibitions can be seen in the diminished AChE activity, glutathione peroxidase activity as well as NO metabolites, and reactive oxygen species contents

More importantly, the enhanced antioxidants status induced neuroprotective effect is a result of EGCG injection in ameliorated inflammatory and free radical causes of cell death in the brain of treated mice.

Dr. Tomata Y, the lead author of the study said, "The lower risk of incident dementia was consistent even after selecting participants who did not have subjective memory complaints at the baseline."

More explicitly, in the finding of a natural food for reverse or delay of risk factors of dementia and AD, vascular, metabolic, and lifestyle-related factors involved development of dementia and late-life cognitive disorders, green tea with a high amount of caffeine stimulate the psychoactive effects in attenuated cognitive impairment/decline and dementia through heightened alertness and arousal and improvement of cognitive performance.

Promisingly, such results have been proposed by several cross-sectional and longitudinal population-based studies, particularly in patients with mild cognitive impairment and progression to dementia.

There is no doubt that green tea may be considered a functional food for reduced risk of early-onset and delay the progression of dementia, but longer follow-up periods are necessary before the use of green tea can open new ways for diet-related prevention and treatment of dementia.

Cucurbitacin B (CuB) Isolated from Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus), a Natural Antiangiogenic and Antimetastatic Potential Bioactve Compound

Metastasis is a process in which cancer cells travel a distance away from the originated site to induce secondary malignant growths.

Anti-metastasis is an action in which substance or substances are used including herbal medicine to stop the cancer cell to infect other healthy tissues a distance away from the primary tumor.

Most cancer drugs used in conventional medicine with the ability to block the migration of cancer cells are considered process antimetastatic activity.

In other words, anti-metastasis drugs are agents that interfere with all modes of cancer cell migration, compared to conventional cytostatic drugs involved in blocking cancer cell proliferation.

Angiogenesis is the process by stimulating the growth of new blood vessels from preexisting blood vessels used by the tumor to obtain nutrient in facilitating cancer proliferation.

Anti-angiogenic activity is an action in which substances such as drugs and herbal medicine are used to stop tumors from growing their own blood vessels.

Conventionally, medicines that block the block vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from attaching to the receptors on the cells that line the blood vessels. such as bevacizumab (Avastin). Bevacizumab is considered anti-angiogenic drugs.

Believe it or not, as of today, there is no anti-metastatic drug on the market, even over 90 percent of cancer deaths today are due to metastasis formation. Dr. Stock AM, the lead scientist in the examined the targets for anti-metastatic drug development, wrote, "Tumor cell migration is the essential prerequisite for invasion and metastasis formation. It is regulated by signal substances in terms of the grade of activity and in terms of direction (chemotaxis)".

And, "Moreover we provide with the example of beta-blockers, how established drugs in other indications are possibly effective and can be co-opted as such anti-metastatics".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

Scientists in the urgency to find the natural compound for the treatment of cancer examined the effect of Cucurbitacin B (CuB), a plant triterpenoid found abundantly in cucumber against the metastatic and angiogenic potential of breast cancer cells.

During the experiment, CuB showed significant activity in the inhibition of cellular proliferation and induction of apoptosis in the tested cancer cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Furthermore, at the sub-IC50 concentrations, injection of CuB inhibited the migratory and invasive potential of highly metastatic breast cancer MDA-MB-231 and 4T1 cells.

In HUVECs, administration of CubB also inhibited migratory, invasive and tube-forming capacities.

In chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane, CuB exerted a strong anti-angiogenic effect in the prevention of new blood vessels.

According to the tested assay, the efficacy of Cub antimetastatic and angiogenic properties was attributed to the blocking of the matrix and proteins (VEGF/FAK/MMP-9) in signaling the development of new blood vessels from the existing vessels to induce cancer cells proliferation.

Additionally, the anti-angiogenesis was also evidenced by the decreased protein CD31 associated with more than 90% of angiosarcomas.

Dr. Sinha S, the lead scientists said, "Collectively, our findings suggest that CuB inhibited breast cancer metastasis and angiogenesis, at least in part, through the downregulation of VEGF/FAK/MMP-9 signaling".

In non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) both in vitro and in vivo, at nanomolar concentrations injection of CuB demonstrated a strong anti-migratory and anti-invasive ability against metastatic NSCLC by blocking the migratory, invasive and tube-forming capacities.

The efficacy of the tested compound in this experiment inhibited metastasis and angiogenesis was attributable to the suppression of proteins (Wnt/β-catenin) associated with pass signals into a cell through cell surface receptors to induce cell proliferation and formation of new blood vessels.

Taken altogether, cucumber processed a high amount of CuB may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

ntake of CuB in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Tea, the Best in Prevention and Treatment of Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a condition in which the cells of the prostate has become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth with the possibility of spreading to the distant parts of the body.
Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and prostate cancer may be detected during physical (rectum) exams.

Green tea may be used as a functional food in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, a renowned institute study suggested

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the trick.

According to the Fu Jen Catholic University, New Taipei City, catechin nanoemulsion preparation showed the highest inhibition of growth of PC-3 tumor cells, with concentration being 15.4 μg/mL and 8.5 μg/mL.
The inhibition of prostate cancer cell line is observed in cell cycle arrest by regulated proteins involved cell cycle division, namely cyclin A, cyclin B, cyclin-dependent kinase 2, and cyclin-dependent kinase 1 expression and activated cell apoptosis and survival.

Dr. Tsai YJ, the lead author said, " catechin extract and nanoemulsion could induce apoptosis of PC-3 cells through decrease in B-cell lymphoma 2 (bcl-2) expression and increase in cytochrome c expression( in the induction of apoptosis) for activation of caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9 (involved cell death)".

Furthermore, in the recruited 404 PCA cases and 395 controls from the same hospital who completed data on habitual tea consumption, including green, oolong, black and pu'er tea regular green drinkers have a significantly reduced risk in prostate cancer development.

The review of the inverse relation of tea drinkers and risk of prostate cancer has shown explicitly:
1. total of 32 cases and 50 controls reported habitual green tea drinking, showing an adjusted OR of 0.60 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.37, 0.98).
2. A moderate excess risk was observed among the habitual pu'er tea drinkers (OR=1.44, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.91).
3. A significantly lower intake of EGCG was observed among cases (54.4 mg) than the controls (72.5 mg).

Additionally, the differentiation of 7 observational studies and 3 randomized controlled trials retrieved from Cochrane Library, PubMed, ScienceDirect Online, and hand searching the database, also reveal an interest correlated incidence of PCa decrease with each 1 cup/day increase of green tea.

According to of the study, "higher green tea consumption was linearly reduced PCa risk with more than 7 cups/day and green tea catechins were effective for preventing PCa".

Collectively, green tea consumption is associated inversely to the risk of PCA but the injection of a large amount of green tea supplement should be taken with care in prevented toxicity.

Turmeric Improves Impaired Glucose Tolerance

Turmeric may be used for the prevention and treatment of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) with no side effects, according to studies.

Impaired glucose tolerance is a condition found in prediabetes and type II diabetes associated with insulin resistance and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

In other words, people with impaired glucose tolerance are less sensitive to the effects of insulin, leading to high blood glucose that is not high enough in the range of diabetes.

According to epidemiological studies, most people with impaired glucose tolerance are more like to develop diabetes and high blood pressure and cholesterol.

According to the statistics, approximately 11.2% of Americans age between 20-74 have IGT many of them do not know they have it, compared to 6.6% with diabetes.

The exact causes of IGT are unidentified. Some risk factors such as being overweight or obese, family history of diabetes, physical inactivity, high blood pressure or high cholesterol and gestational diabetes are found to induce a substantial risk of IGT.

Some researchers suggested that aging-induced the decrease of production of hormone and reduced function of body organ may have a strong implication to cause the condition developing.

Dr. Ervin Szoke, MD, the lead scientists in the examined the hyperglycemia in a total of 266 individuals with NGT and 130 individuals with IGT, ranging in age from ∼20 to ∼70 years, said, " In people with NGT, the disposition index for first- and second-phase insulin release decreased similarly at a rate of ∼0.7% per year. In people with IGT, the disposition indexes for first- and second-phase insulin release decreased at greater rates (∼2.2 and 1.4% per year, P = 0.002 and 0.009, respectively, vs. NGT), with the decrease in the first phase being greater than that of the second phase (P = 0.025)".

These results suggested that although aging does not correlate to insulin sensitive, it has a significant effect on insulin secretion. Over time, the condition may overwork the β-cell function that increases the risk of IGT.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
Researchers on finding a potential compound for the prevention of diabetes evaluated the effect of turmeric on patients with impaired glucose tolerance.
The study included a review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted with a minimum follow-up period of 6weeks, according to the standard guideline and the Cochrane tool of risk of Bias Tool.

According to the results of the selected trials, curcumin extract intervention showed statistical significance after 3, 6 and 9months on the two-hour fasting plasma glucose.

Curcumin extract injection showed statistical significance in the reduction of glycosylated hemoglobin levels A1c (HbA1c) values after 3, 6 and 9 months.

Furthermore, curcumin extract administration also exerted a statistical significance against insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) after 6months and after 9months.

Compared to the effects of other herbal medicines used in the selected trials, curcumin is effective for the treatment of impaired glucose tolerance.

In order to understand more information about curcumin anti-IGT property, researchers conducted a double-blind, parallel group, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial in 40 adults affected by impaired fasting glucose (FPG = 100-125 mg/dL) in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

The results of the experiment included 2 weeks of dietary habits correction than patients continued the diet and began a period of 8 weeks of treatment with nutraceutical (combination of Lagerstroemia speciosa, Berberis aristata, Curcuma longa, Alpha-lipoic acid, Chrome picolinate, and Folic acid,) or placebo suggested * Nutraceutical treatment showed a significant improvement in TG (-34.7%), HDL-C (+13.7), FPI (-13.4%), and HOMA-Index (-25%) versus the baseline values compared to placebo.
* Both treatments showed no effect on body mass Index, LDL-C and hsCRP.

* No adverse effects were found in neither group.

In other words, the combination improved the IGT by selectively inducing the decrease of certain parameters without affecting the levels of LDL-C.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention of IGT, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tomatoes Inhibit Parameters Associated with the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a class of diseases associated with the blood vessels. Depending on the types of blood vessel damage or blocked, CVD can be a coronary artery disease caused by the hardening of the arteries that interfere with the blood flow to the heart.

Heart failure, a major health problem associated with the reduced function of the heart that affects more than 6.5 million Americans is also a leading cause of hospitalization in people older than age 65.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, every year, heart disease causes the death of 610,000 people in the United States. In other words, every year, 1 in every 4 deaths in the US are caused by heart disease.

Believe it or not, every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack including the first attack of 525,000 patients.

Epidemiologically, risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease include family history, age ethnicity, gender, medical conditions such as cholesterol high blood pressure and diabetes.

Out of many risk factors, some researchers suggested the widespread obesity caused by the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may be one major condition that causes the onset of CVD.

Dr. Frank M. Sacks wrote, " Prospective observational studies in many populations showed that lower intake of saturated fat coupled with higher intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat is associated with lower rates of CVD and of other major causes of death and all-cause mortality. In contrast, replacement of saturated fat with mostly refined carbohydrates and sugars is not associated with lower rates of CVD and did not reduce CVD in clinical trials".

And, "Replacement of saturated with unsaturated fats lowers low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, a cause of atherosclerosis, linking biological evidence with the incidence of CVD in populations and in clinical trials".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a natural treatment of cardiovascular disease, researchers evaluated the state of the evidence from intervention trials on the effect of consuming tomato products and lycopene on markers of cardiovascular (CV) function.

By searching the medical literature database of Medline, Web of science, and Scopus from inception to August 2016, 21 studies fulfilled inclusion criteria out of 1189 publications were identified.

According to the results from the meta-analyses, overall, interventions supplementing tomato were associated with significant reductions in LDL-cholesterol, inflammatory cytokine IL-6.

Furthermore, tomato injection improved the arteries function in blood circulation (flow-mediated dilation (FMD).

Compared to tomatoes, lycopene supplementation only reduced systolic-BP.

In other words, with the exception of blood pressure management by lycopene supplementation, dietary tomato provided more favorable results on cardiovascular risk, compared to lycopene supplementation.

The results strongly support the use of dietary tomatoes for the prevention of CVD.

Dr. Cheng HM. after taking other factors into accounts said, "The available evidence on the effects of tomato products and lycopene supplementation on CV risk factors supports the view that increasing the intake of these has positive effects on blood lipids, blood pressure, and endothelial function".

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of CVD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green tea, the Best Immunomodulated Functional Foods

Green tea is found to consist of a strong immunomodulating effect, affecting the innate and adaptive immune systems, a renowned institute study suggested

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

According to the Harvard Medical School, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) isolated from green tea expressed a strong effect on T cell functions, including T cell activation, proliferation, differentiation, and production of cytokines.

Injection of the phytochemical in the animal model showed significant effects in regulated T cell dysfunction in the expression of autoimmune inflammatory diseases as well as ameliorated T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases.

Furthermore, in naïve CD4(+) T cells proliferate and differentiate into different effector subsets, green tea EGCG inhibited the pro-inflammatory Th1 and Th17 cells, subsets of Th cells responsible for inducing autoimmunity, thus improving symptoms and reducing the pathology of autoimmune diseases.

Additionally, Dr. Wu D, the lead author said, "(The) protective effect EGCG is associated with the suppressed proliferation of autoreactive T cells, in reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines of Th1 and Th17, and increased T cell regulation populations in lymphoid tissues and central nervous system".

Further evaluation of green tea EGCG effect in regulated CD4(+) T helper (Th) subsets Th1, Th9, and Th17 cells conducted by the Tufts University, postulated that the phytochemical impeded Th1, Th9, and Th17 differentiation in exhibited inflammation by prevented IL-6(the pro-inflammatory cytokine)-induced suppression of Treg development.

More importantly, in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) rats, EGCG improved function of CD4(+) T cell through modulated the expression of IL-6 induced cytokine(gp130) in response to autoimmune function and cellular response.

Taking together, green tea process a strong immunomodulating effect in reduced risk and treatment of autoinflammatory and immune disease, but long term and large amount intake should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.

Bromelain Protects the Rotator Cuff Against the Onset of Tendinitis

Tendinitis is inflammation or irritation of a tendon as a result of overuse, infection or rheumatic disease.

In other words, people who have an occupation or sport that requires a repetition of particular movement putting stress on the tendons over time are associated with the risk of tendinitis, including the tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, swimmer's shoulder, and jumper's knee.

Most common symptoms of tendinitis are a dull pain that affects limb or joint, tenderness and mild swelling.

Most common prevalent factors of tendinitis are aging, sport, occupation.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in the US, tendonitis (swelling of the tendons) is a fairly common problem, accounting for more than 70,000 people to miss work per year.

Tendinitis if untreated may induce complication of tendon rupture, a serious condition that may require surgery.

Long-term or persistently of tendon irritation has been found to induce tendinosis that leads to the degenerative changes in the tendon.

Conventionally, the immediate treatment for tendonitis caused by occupation is rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the injured tendon. pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to ease inflammation and pain.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of tendinitis, researchers examined the effect of bromelain on patients with rotator cuff tendinitis.

Tenosan * (arginine L-alpha-ketoglutarate, methylsulfonylmethane, hydrolyzed type I collagen and bromelain), a commercial supplement sold in Italy was used in the study to test for its activity in tendon healing and mitigating the pain due to tendonitis.

Participants in the study included 90 consecutive patients with a large, postero-superior rotator cuff tear (RCT). managed with an arthroscopic repair randomly assigned into either Group I with or Group II without the supplement.

Supplement treated group showed a significant effect on the shoulder pain (follow-up: 6 months) and repair integrity on the final follow-up.

In other words, supplement after 3 months and after cuff repair decreases shoulder post-operative pain and a slight improvement in repair integrity.

Additional observation of the results, researchers suggested that these improvements may have a strong impact on the postoperative rehabilitation program and reduced the re-rupture rate.

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal remedies may be considered supplements for the treatment of rotator cuff tendinitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
