Green Tea, The #1 Functional Food for Prevention and Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome
A recent study conducted by a renowned institute suggested that regular drinking of green tea may reduce the risk of prevalence of metabolic syndrome.
Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.
Metabolic syndrome is a biochemical and physiological factor associated with risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
In a cross-sectional population-based survey including 8,821 adults (51.4% female) conducted in Krakow, Poland., both coffee and tea drinker showed a negatively associated with MetS (OR 0.75, 95% CI 0.66, 0.86 and OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.67, 0.92, respectively).
The study also found that high tea consumers had lower BMI, waist circumference, but moderated decreased diastolic blood pressure, as well as negatively correlated central obesity and fasting plasma glucose in women, but not in men, in compared low drinker,
Other, in the study of dietary polyphenols, a major compound found in green tea including 8821 adults (51.4 % female), using food frequency questionnaires and matching food consumption data with the Phenol-Explorer database.conducted in Kraków, Poland, dietary polyphenol intake in the highest quartile was associated inversely to the development of MetS (OR 0.80; 95 % CI 0.64, 0.98 and OR 0.70; 95 % CI 0.56, 0.86 for both men and women, respectively).
Dietary polyphenols in high quality showed a negative association of WC, blood pressure, high lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides in women, and fasting plasma glucose in both gender.
Dr. Grosso G, the lead author said, "(Depending to types of polyphenols) phenolic acids and stilbenes were significantly associated with MetS; lignans and stilbenes with WC; phenolic acids with blood pressure and triglycerides; and flavonoids with fasting plasma glucose" and " Among specific subclasses of polyphenols, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavanols, and dihydrochalcones had the most relevant role."
In support the role of used of polyphenol for treatment of Metabolic syndrome, in a total of 2725 participants free of hypertension at baseline tested for blood pressure or taking hypertensive medication within the last 2 weeks at 2-4-year follow-up visit was conducted by the Integrated Cancer Registry of Catania-Messina-Siracusa-Enna, researchers showed that diet of the highest quartile of total polyphenol intake was associated with 31% decreased risk of hypertension compared with the lowest intake (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.48, 0.98) in women with no significant association in men.
The study also stated that most influential phytochemicals in reduced risk and treatment of metabolic syndrome ingredients are phenolic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids as they showed an independently associated to lower odds of hypertension (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.47, 0.93) in comparison to others.
Taking together, green tea with major chemical compounds of polyphenol may be used as functional foods in the prevention and treatment of the metabolic syndrome.

Herbal Bilberry Protects the Blood Vessels Against the Risk of Vascular Disease in Vivo
Vasoprotection is the action in which substances including herbal and natural remedy are used to protect the integrity of the blood vessels.
Blood vessels are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart.
There are 3 main types of blood vessel
* Arteries that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues and organs of the body. Damage of arteries is found to induce coronary artery disease caused by narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries due to plaques accumulated on the arterial wall.
* Veins that carry blood toward the heart. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common condition associated with disease of the veins that affects up to 20 percent of adults.
* Capillaries (the smallest blood vessels) has been found to induce systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare acquired disorder.
Some researchers suggested that following a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise may have a strong impact on the blood vessels integrity.
Dr. Hanrui Zhang said, "Accumulating evidence suggests that inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα) plays a pivotal role in the dysregulation of macrovascular and microvascular function".
And, "Dietary supplements and exercise training decrease TNFαproduction and ameliorate TNFα-mediated pathological changes in vasculature. Thus, the inhibitory effects of dietary supplements and physical exercise on TNFα production and TNFα signaling may contribute to their vasoprotective properties".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
On finding a natural ingredient which processes vasoactive and vasoprotective properties, researchers examined the effects of anthocyanin-rich extracts prepared from chokeberry (Ck), bilberry (B), or elderberry (E). on reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a critical role in the impairment of nitric oxide-mediated vascular functions.
In Coronary arterial rings isolated from 64 pigs and incubated in sterile tissue culture media overnight, Ck and B, but not E, produced dose- and endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation.
In coronary vascular tone, endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation by other factors was not affected by exposure of rings to any extract at 0.05 mg total anthocyanins per liter for 5 or 30 min.
Furthermore, anthocyanin-enhanced extracts produce endothelium-dependent relaxation in porcine coronary arteries.
However, high doses of B exerted a significantly protective effect against alternation of coronary arteries induced by ROS with no effect on vasorelaxation to endogenous or exogenous NO.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "These results suggest that such extracts could have significant beneficial effects in vascular disease".
Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of vascular disease, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea, The Best functional food for Prevention and Treatment of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
Green tea may be considered as a functional food in lower risk and treatment for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a respectable institute opinionated.
Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is a condition caused by over accumulated of fat in the liver.
Adding a slice of ginger will solve the aversion.
According to the University of Connecticut, Storrs, the efficacy of green tea for the treatment of obese patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated to polyphenolic catechins in the induction of hypolipidemic, thermogenic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities.
These chemical compound have also found to mitigate the occurrence and progression of NAFLD.
Dr. Masterjohn C, the lead author said, "(The phytochemical compounds) demonstrating the hepatoprotective properties of green tea and its catechins and the proposed mechanisms by which these targeted dietary agents protect against NAFLD"
Furthermore, in mice fed on a high-fat diet for 24 weeks., then injected with EGCG (10, 20 and 40 mg·kg(-1)·d(-1), ip), for 4 weeks, researchers found that treated mice showed a significant improvement of high-fat diet in induced the body weight, grade 2 or 3 liver fatty degeneration (steatosis, lobular inflammation, and ballooning), severe hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance..
The phytochemical EGCG, in dose-dependent also enhanced insulin clearance and upregulated IDE protein expression and enzyme activity in regulated levels of glucose in the liver of treated mice.
In fact, EGCG not only promoted weigh loss but also attenuated symptoms of mice with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Promisingly, in the study of green tea polyphenols (GTP) on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Zucker fatty (ZF) rats, researches also indicated that, GTP intervention not only decreased weight gain and significantly lowered visceral fat but also reduced fasting serum insulin, glucose, and lipids levels, through ameliorated expression of hepatic TG accumulation and cytoplasmic lipid droplet as well as diminished hepatic lipogenesis and triglycerides outflux from liver.
Taking together, green tea has expressed a significant enhancement in reduced risk and treatment of
nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, through many aspects. But large amount of intake regularly should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.

Antioxidants Carotenoids Protect the Colonic Cells Integrity Against Colon Cancer
The colon or large intestine formed part of the digestive system plays a critical role to remove waste products from your body.
In other words, the colon works alongside with other digestive organs to remove stool and maintain your fluid and electrolyte balance.
The colon begins at the end of the small intestine and ends at the rectum.
More precisely, the large intestine can be broken into six sections including the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and the rectum.
Colon cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon tissues. At the early stage, most patients are assymptomatic.
Colon cancer can be classified depending on the location and cells origination
* Adenocarcinomas
Most cases of colon cancer are adenocarcinomas, originated in epithelium tissues, including the surface layer of skin, glands and their tissues that line the cavities and organs of the body.
* Squamous cell cancers
Squamous cells are the skin like cells that make up the colon lining together with the gland cells. Squamous cell cancers are rare with the risk of 25 per 100000.
Other colon tumors
* Carcinoid
Carcinoid is an unusual type of slow growth neuroendocrine tumor. It looks benign but might spread to other parts of the body as they grow in hormone-producing tissue in the digestive system.
* Leiomyosarcomas
Leiomyosarcomas are the rare and resistant types of colon cancer and generally not very responsive to chemotherapy or radiation. They are a malignant abnormal mass of tissue of smooth muscles of the colon, comprising between 5–10% of soft tissue sarcomas.
* Melanomas
Melanomas are a rare malignant tumor of cells that produce the dark pigment. This type of colon cancer usually originates from somewhere else before spreading to the colon.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 101,420 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed in the US. The risk of colon cancer is slightly lower in women than in men.
Bowel cancer also known as colorectal cancer, is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix.
Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers investigated the antiproliferative activity of carotenoids separated from marine Chlorella ellipsoidea and freshwater Chlorella vulgaris on colon cancer cell line.
Based on the chemical analysis, the carotenoid from C. vulgaris was almost completely composed of lutein compared to carotenoid from C. ellipsoidea that was composed of violaxanthin with two minor xanthophylls, antheraxanthin, and zeaxanthin.
According to the tested assays, both semipurified extracts of C. ellipsoidea and C. vulgaris inhibited HCT116 cell growth in a dose-dependent manner, with the effective IC(50) values of 40.73 +/- 3.71 and 40.31 +/- 4.43 microg/mL, respectively.
In other words, both carotenoids even with different major chemical compound exerted a similar inhibitory activity in the tested cancer cell line.
Furthermore, both extracts also demonstrated a significant effect on inducing cancer cell apoptosis. However, C. ellipsoidea extract produced an apoptosis-inducing effect almost 2.5 times stronger than that of the C. vulgaris extract.
The results strongly suggested that there must be other unknown compounds found in C. ellipsoidea extract but not in C. vulgaris that causes the additional death of the cancer cell population.
Dr. Cha KH, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote, "These results indicate that bioactive xanthophylls of C. ellipsoidea might be useful functional ingredients in the prevention of human cancers".
Taken altogether, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green tea, The Best Drink for Reduced Risk and Treatment of Hypertension
Regular drinking of green tea may have a potential effect in maintaining normal blood pressure and reduced risk of hypertension, a recent study suggested.
Hypertension is an abnormal high of blood pressure, one of the major risk factors in contributing to the early onset of cardiovascular disease.
Green tea, considered as a functional food, linking numbers of health benefit has been reported by several renowned research and studies. Adding one slice of ginger will do the trick of neutralization.
Hypertension of male Wistar rats induced by the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor [N-nitro-L-arginine-methyl-ester (L-NAME); 20 mg/kg per day, orally, for 2 weeks], fed with green tea extract exhibited a strong effect in reduced hypertension (119 ± 1 mmHg) and higher renal sympathetic nerve activity (161 ± 12 spikes/s) than the control group (97 ± 2 spikes/s).
Green tea oral administration also showed a significant decreased in hypertensive parameter by ameliorated.arterial baroreceptor function and vascular and systemic oxidative stress.
Furthermore, in a total of 20 Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats at 13 weeks old with metabolic syndrome randomized into a saline-treated group (OLETF; n = 10) and a group treated with decaffeinated-GTE (25 mg/kg/day) (GTE-OLETF; n = 10), group fed with decaffeinated-GTE significantly reduced BP (OLETF vs. GTE-OLETF; 130 ± 7 vs. 121 ± 3 mmHg, p = 0.01) in compared control fed with saline.
The study also suggested that fed mice with green tea also showed an antihypertensive effect in reduced vascular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and NADPH in the generation of ROS, as well as improving endothelium (cell lines the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels)and lymphatic vessels dependent relaxation.
Dr. Ihm SH, the lead author said," (green tea extract) improved endothelial dysfunction and IR, and eventually lowered BP".
Taking together, there is no doubt that green tea processes a significant effect in reduced risk and treatment of hypertension through reduced oxidative stress and improved vascular relaxation as well as decreased metabolic syndrome in exaggerated hypertension.

Healthy Food Navy Bean Promotes Colon Health through Modulating Microbiome Metabolism
The colon formed part of the digestive system plays a critical role to absorb water from the small bowel contents and break down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.
Colon health is the process to enhance the function of the colon through many mechanisms, particularly, in the improvement of the ratio of gut microbiota.
Gut microbiota is a community of bacteria found in the gut. In a healthy individual, the ratio of good and bad bacterias are balanced. However, if the bad bacteria are overgrowing compared to good bacteria, it may lead to dysbiosis which has been found to induce chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.
Most common risk factors associated with the imbalanced ratio of gut microbiota include the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle.
In other words, if you follow a healthy diet with a high in vegetables and fruits and fewer in processed foods, saturated and trans fat and red meat accompanied by moderate exercise, you may have done a job to protect the balance of gut microbiota.
The impact of gut microbes can also have a strong influence on what the human host is able to extract from its diet, both nutritionally and energetically.
Epidemiological studies suggested overweight and obese people show a dysbiosis characterized by a lower diversity. Imbalanced gut microbiota dysbiosis promotes diet-induced obesity and metabolic complications.
Some researchers suggested that we can optimize our colon health by manipulating the gut microbiota through diet by increasing the intake fiber, prebiotic and probiotic foods.
Dr. Hall A, the lead scientist in the study of microbial metabolism in the mammalian gut, wrote, "Microbial dysbiosis, however, has been implicated in a number of human disorders, including obesity and inflammation. This dichotomy highlights the need to understand the factors that determine the composition and metabolic output of our resident and transient microbes".
And, " Throughout the human lifespan, we know that diet plays a major role in shaping gut microbial communities, as well as directing the types and amounts of metabolites produced. Understanding the factors that affect microbial metabolic output within the host may help identify the roles of microbes in health, as well as new targets for treatment in disease".
The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to their numerous health benefits.
On finding a natural compound for the improvement of colon health, researchers evaluated the effect of navy beans in the modulation of the host microbiome metabolism.
The 4-week, randomized-controlled trial with overweight and obese CRC survivors involved consumption of 1 meal and 1 snack daily, containing 35 g of cooked navy bean or macronutrient matched meals and snacks with 0 g of navy beans for the control group (n = 18).
According to the assessment of the impact on the human stool metabolome, which includes the presence of navy bean metabolites, * 26 significantly different metabolites were found at day 28 in navy bean group compared to the participants' baseline (p ≤ 0.05) and to the control group.
* Additionally, of the 560 total metabolites identified from the cooked navy beans, there were 237 possible navy bean-derived metabolites identified in the stool of participants consuming navy beans.
* Most importantly, the stool relative abundance of ophthalmic increased 5.25-fold for navy bean consumers strongly suggested that navy bean in the glutathione regulation and cancer control were attributed to detoxification of xenobiotics, antioxidant defense, proliferation, and apoptosis.
More precisely, navy-bean protects the colon cells integrity by exciting detoxed, antioxidant, anti-proliferation, and anti-apoptotic activity.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "These metabolites and metabolic pathways represent an acute response to increased navy bean intake, which merits further investigation for improving colonic health after long-term consumption".
Taken altogether, navy-bean may be considered a remedy for the improvement of colon health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea, in Reduced Risk of Early Onset and Progression of Dementia
Dementia is the loss of mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people. About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age.
Green tea may be used as a functional food for the prevention of early-onset and treatment of dementia due to aging progression, a renowned institute study suggested
Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome", according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the neutralization trick.
In the 5.7-year prospective cohort study, using a questionnaire, information on daily green tea consumption and other lifestyle factors collected from elderly Japanese individuals aged 65 years or more, green tea consumption is associated to a reduced risk of dementia with an incidence of the occurrent rate of 8.7%.
Furthermore, in the intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of streptozotocin (STZ) animal model explicated chronic brain dysfunction involved long-term and progressive deficits in learning, memory, and cognitive behavior, along with a permanent and ongoing cerebral energy deficit, mice treated with green tea EGCG at a dose of 10mg/kg/day for 4 weeks, showed a significant improvement in reduced oxidative stress parameter against production of inflammatory and free radical expression.
These inhibitions can be seen in the diminished AChE activity, glutathione peroxidase activity as well as NO metabolites, and reactive oxygen species contents
More importantly, the enhanced antioxidants status induced neuroprotective effect is a result of EGCG injection in ameliorated inflammatory and free radical causes of cell death in the brain of treated mice.
Dr. Tomata Y, the lead author of the study said, "The lower risk of incident dementia was consistent even after selecting participants who did not have subjective memory complaints at the baseline."
More explicitly, in the finding of a natural food for reverse or delay of risk factors of dementia and AD, vascular, metabolic, and lifestyle-related factors involved development of dementia and late-life cognitive disorders, green tea with a high amount of caffeine stimulate the psychoactive effects in attenuated cognitive impairment/decline and dementia through heightened alertness and arousal and improvement of cognitive performance.
Promisingly, such results have been proposed by several cross-sectional and longitudinal population-based studies, particularly in patients with mild cognitive impairment and progression to dementia.
There is no doubt that green tea may be considered a functional food for reduced risk of early-onset and delay the progression of dementia, but longer follow-up periods are necessary before the use of green tea can open new ways for diet-related prevention and treatment of dementia.
