Lycopene Inhibits Skin Cancer Cells Spreading in Vitro

Skin cancer is a medical condition associated with irregular cell growth in the skin tissues.

Most cases of skin cancer start in the cells on the surface of the outermost inner lining tissue before penetrating into deeper layers.

After growing in size at the advanced stage, the cells of the tumor may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through blood and fluids circulation.

Most common secondary metastasis of skin cancer is breast, lung, and colon.

Believe it or not, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. As of today, there are 58 million American are living with skin cancer.

Approximately, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.

If you have experienced some of the symptoms such as a sore that doesn't heal or comes back after healing, a pale white or yellow flat areas that look like scars, raised and scaly red patches, small, smooth and shiny lumps that are pearly white, pink or red, a pink growth with raised edges and indents in the center and a growth that has small blood vessels on the surface of the skin, you may be on the early stage of skin cancer, please check with your doctor immediately.

The 5-year survival of among all people with melanoma of the skin is 92% compared to 100% of the localized skin cancer.

Out of many prevalent factors that cause skin cancer, some researchers suggested exposure to UVB are one most risk associated with skin cancer onset in the US.

Dr. Calzavara-Pinton P, the lead scientist said, "BCC is much more strongly related to measures of intermittent ultraviolet exposure (particularly those of childhood or adolescence) than to measures of cumulative exposure".

And, " In contrast, SCC is more strongly related to constant or cumulative sun exposure. Photobiological studies have clarified that sunlight and UVB radiation are complete carcinogens for AK and SCC although the relationship with UVA exposure is much less known".

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of skin cancer without side effects, researchers evaluated the effect of lycopene, a kind of carotenoid inhibitory function on skin tumor cell migration.

In the human sSCC cell line COLO-16 selected to the study, administration of lycopene inhibited the cell proliferation and migration of COLO-16 cells without affecting the normal keratinocytes.

Furthermore, the inhibitory activity was found by exhibiting Zonula occludens (ZO)-1, inhibition of ZO-1 expression and its failure to accumulate at cell junctions (ZO-1 and claudin-1) have been found to induce cancer progression.

In other words, lycopene inhibited the SCC cell line COLO-16 proliferation by enhancing the expression of the tight junction complexes that regulate the permeability of epithelial against cancer cells.

Additionally, cell cycle division proteins (JNK and ERK ) in the induction of mitogen associated with the decreasing levels of ZO-1 and claudin-1 were also inhibited by the injection of lycopene.

More precisely, lycopene inhibited the progression of human sSCC cell line COLO-16 by reducing the proteins involved in promoting cell cycle division and increasing cancer cell permeability and autophagy,

Based on the findings researchers said, "This study indicates that lycopene might be a useful chemopreventive agent against cSCC".

Taken altogether, lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Cranberry, the Best in the Promotion of Oral Health

Oral health is a process or activity that protect the oral cavity against diseases by regular brushing of the teeth and cleaning between the teeth.

Gingivitis or gingival inflammation is one of the most common conditions of oral inflammation of the gum caused by overexpression of plaques accumulated on your teeth that irritate the gingiva. Over times, the gum of infected person has become swollen and bleed easily.

In severe cases, the condition can lead to periodontal disease, inducing tooth decay or loss of the tooth.

Most of the cases of gingivitis are associated with poor hygiene, particularly in people who smoke.
Gingivitis can be reversed by following a good oral health habit, including brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and getting regular dental checkups.

Other causes of the oral problem are poor diet and hygiene, trauma, stress, alcohol use, and use of illegal substances.

However, chronic diseases also are found to induce poor oral health, including diabetes.

Most common symptoms of gingivitis including swollen gums with dusky red or dark red color and bleeding easily when brush or floss, particularly breath-breath.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, smoking is an important cause of severe gum disease in the US.

Some researchers suggested that long-term oral infection can place the patients at risk of certain chronic disease.

Dr. Xiaojing Li, and colleagues wrote, "Recently, it has been recognized that oral infection, especially periodontitis, may affect the course and pathogenesis of a number of systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes mellitus, and low birth weight".

And, "Periodontitis as a major oral infection may affect the host's susceptibility to systemic disease in three ways: by shared risk factors; subgingival biofilms acting as reservoirs of gram-negative bacteria; and the periodontium acting as a reservoir of inflammatory mediators".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of oral disease, researchers examined the effect of cranberry extracts on oral health, including dental caries and protection against periodontitis.

Cranberry fraction enriched in high molecular weight polyphenols from the A non-dialysable extract showed to inhibit cariogenic and periodontal pathogenic bacteria.

Diseases associated with oral inflammatory response and enzymes that degrade the extracellular matrix was also reduced upon the application of cranberry fraction.

Furthermore, according to tested differentiation, Cranberry components found in the extract also inhibited acid production, attachment, and biofilm formation by Streptococcus mutans.

Glucan-binding proteins associated with dental caries pathogen, extracellular enzymes secreted by the cell involved in a bacterial trait, and bacterial hydrophobicity were also affected by cranberry components.

In periodontal diseases, the cranberry fraction also exerted similarly aforementioned effects such as the host inflammatory responses, production, and activity of enzymes.

The findings strongly suggested that cranberry components found in cranberry worked synergistically, for the prevention and/or treatment of oral diseases, particularly in those of high molecular weight bioactive molecules.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the promotion of oral health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Collard Greens Inhibits the Fat Accumulation in Obese Patients

Obesity is a chronic condition characterized by excess body fat has accumulated over time. People with a BMI of over 30 is considered obese.

Similarly, overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height. People with a BMI ranged from 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.

According to the statistics, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. Obesity has been found to induce adverse effects nearly every system of the human body, leading to increased risk of numerous diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, the rate of obesity in the US and Canada continues to climb at an alarming rate, leading to significant burdens to the country economy and health care system.

Epidemiologically, most common symptoms of obesity are breathlessness, increased sweating, inability to cope with physical activity, feeling very tired every day, back and joint pains, low confidence, and self-esteem and feeling isolation

According to the CDC, most common complications associated with obesity are coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer of breast, colon, endometrial, gallbladder, kidney, and liver and sleep apnea.

Currently, there is no effective treatment of the disease. However, some researchers suggested that combat the powerful environmental factors that influence eating and physical activity may be the best approach to reduce the risk of obesity.

Bariatric surgery is used as an option for management that causes a reduction in the amount of food you are or a reduction in the absorption of calories from the food you eat, or both.

The surgery has been proposed to patients with extreme obesity (BMI of 40 or higher) due to weight-induced a serious weight-related health problem, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Furthermore, this type of surgery has posed a serious risk of many patients if the commitment of making lifelong changes in eating and exercise habits cannot be followed through.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of obesity, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane found abundantly in collard greens.

In a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in C57BL/6N mice which were fed a normal diet (ND), HFD or HFD plus 0.1% sulforaphane (SFN) for 6 weeks, researchers found that SFN administration not only attenuated HFD-induced visceral adiposity that stored around a number of important internal organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines, adipocyte hypertrophy associated with an enlargement of adipose tissue but also ameliorated fat accumulation in the liver.

Furthermore, SFN decreased the elevated levels of serum total cholesterol and leptin, and liver triglyceride in HFD-SFN-fed mice compared to HFD-fed mice.

SFN also inhibited the expression of a gene associated with the promotion of inflammation in the adipose tissue of HFD-SFN mice and increased the adiponectin function in regulating glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown.

Moreover, reductase expression associated with the production of cholesterol was decreased and an antibody associated with fatty acid utilization was increased in lycopene treat group compared with HFD-fed mice.

Taken altogether, collard green processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry, the Best in the Prevention and treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a whole berry for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, according to studies.

Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition caused by not enough insulin entering the bloodstream to convert blood glucose into energy. Insulin resistance is a hallmark of patients with the disease.

Insulin is a hormone with a function to regulate the movement of sugar into your cells. In other words, insulin converts sugar to energy to fuel the body needs.

Most cases of type 2 diabetes is a result of not enough insulin produced by the pancreas due to reduced numbers of healthy beta cells or the insulin produced was not used properly due to the clogged up of the insulin receptor sites.

Type 2 diabetes is an acquired disease in adulthood. In the Western world, most cases of type 2 diabetes are associated with obesity induced by a long-term poor diet and lack of exercise.

Truly enough, over 68% of the population in the US are either overweight or obese.

According to the statistics in the US, in 2015, 30.3 million Americans or 9.4 percent of the U.S. population and another 84.1 million had confirmed diabetes and prediabetes, respectively.

Sadly, the majority of people with prediabetes don't know they had it.

Therefore, losing weight, eating well and moderate exercise daily can help to manage the disease against the onset of hyperglycemia, a major cause of the diabetic complication.

People with type 2 diabetes who can not manage the disease through weight loss, healthy diet and exercise are commonly treated with medications or insulin therapy.

Please make sure you know all the side effects if you are currently taking any form of therapies for diabetic treatment.

Most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes depending on the severity of the stages include increased thirst, frequent urination, unintended weight loss, and fatigue,

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms wound that does heal, blurred vision and frequent infections and areas of darkened skin.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

On finding potential ingredients from the treatment of type 2 diabetes, researchers examined the bilberry content of anthocyanins and polyphenols which have been proven to process antidiabetic activity in several studies.

Injection of anthocyanins and polyphenols exhibited an increase in insulin secretion (anthocyanin pelargonidin), reduction of insulin resistance (anthocyanin cyanidin-3-glucoside), and glucose resorption from the GIT (polyphenols) and enhancement of beta-cells regeneration associated with the diabetics.

In the examination of the single ingredient anthocyanins, researchers found the compounds also contribute to the improvement of the lipid spectrum compared to that of acarbose and atorvastatin, according to many preclinical and clinical studies.

Furthermore, the compound derivatives anthocyanin cyanidin-3-galactoside also have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective activities.

In order to reveal more information about bilberry antidiabetic effects, researchers at the joint study led by the University of Eastern Finland differentiated the serum hippuric acid changes after intake of bilberry.

In a total of 47 individuals with features of the metabolic syndrome, randomly assigned to either a BB diet (n = 15), an SRC diet (n = 20) or a control diet (n = 12).comapred to from fasting serum samples at baseline and after an 8-week intervention, researchers showed that fasting serum hippuric acid increased significantly (3.5-fold) only in the BB group and correlated with changes in fasting plasma glucose concentration and insulin secretion.

These results suggested bilberry anti-diabetic property not only confirms the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study but also improves glycemic control and pancreas β-cell function which is reduced in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Dr. the lead scientist wrote after taking into account co and confounders in the final report, "Fasting serum hippuric acid is increased after consumption of anthocyanin-rich bilberries, and may contribute to the beneficial effect of bilberry consumption through its associations with better glycemic control and β-cell function".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Betacyanins Inhibits Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in Vitro

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system against the invasion of the foreign stimuli and pathogens with an aim to protect our body from infection.

In the acute phase of tissue damage or injury, after receiving the information from the neurotransmitters, the white blood cells that response for the first line of defense activate the production of blood platelets and the inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to destroy the invasive agents.

However, in most cases, overproduction of inflammatory cytokines can damage the nearby cells that lead to improper healing with the formation of scars.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a class of chronic conditions associated with the inflammation of the digestive tract, can be classified into

* Ulcerative colitis is found in the innermost lining of the colon and rectum.

* Crohn's disease is a type of IBD that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, other than the colon and rectum.

Epidemiological studies suggested that patients with IBD are associated with the symptoms of severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss. Long-term persistent symptoms such as weight loss may be life-threatening.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The causes of IBD are unknown. The alternation of the ratio of gut microbiota may be the major culprit in facilitating the onset of IBD.

Dr. Becker C, the lead scientist wrote, "The intestinal microbiota has important metabolic and host-protective functions. Conversely, to these beneficial functions, the intestinal microbiota is thought to play a central role in the etiopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), chronic inflammation of the gut mucosa".

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a natural pigment for the prevention and treatment of colonic inflammation, researchers examined the effects of beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. Rubra) products and their major component betanin found in betacyanins in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

According to the tested assays,
* Betanin at the concentration of 100 μM for 24 h increased DNA damage in IBD patients' neutrophils. In other words, betanin exhibited cytotoxic activity against the neutrophils isolated from the blood of patients with inflammatory bowel disease--ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), compared to those obtained in colon carcinoma-derived Caco-2 cells.

* Furthermore, betanin treatment in Caco-2 cells with H2O2 also caused a 4-fold increase of DNA strand breaks compared to untreated cells. More precisely, betanin elevated the expression of free radical H2O2 to cause cancer cell death.

* Moreover, pre-treatment with betanin was found to reduce DNA damage in healthy normal cells.

* Additonally, betanin also promoted the activity of procaspase and caspase pro-apoptotic activity to induce cancer cells apoptosis.

Based on the findings, Dr. the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that betanin may support mechanisms that lead to the release of ROS and apoptotic cell death. In this way, betanin may exert anti-inflammatory and potentially cancer-preventive activity".

Taken altogether, betacyanins processed abundantly bioactive ingredient betanin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver steatosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Artichoke, the Potential Anti Mesothelioma Remedy, According to Researchers

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops from the thin layer of tissue known as the mesothelium.

Most cases of mesothelioma are found on the lining of the lungs and chest wall, compared to other organs. Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the pleural lining of the lung.

Exposure to asbestos which has been banned is one of the most common causes of the disease. Some researchers suggested that inhaling asbestos can cause mesothelioma in many ways, including
* Induced chronic low-grade inflammation of mesothelial cells as the immune system can not completely drive out the fibers that cause damage to the lung, leading to the compromise.

* Long-term exposure of the asbestos can suppress the genes associated with limited cell cycle division and tumor suppression

* Long-term exposure are also found to alter the cell DNA, leading to cancer.

According to statistic, 2000 to 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year in the United States. The asbestos risk of pleural mesothelioma is in the range of 2 to 10 percent.

Most cases of malignant mesothelioma are closely associated with past occupational exposure.
However, asbestos is found persistently in our natural and built environments.

Besides most common cancer symptoms, patients with pleural mesothelioma at the advanced stage may also experience symptoms of dry cough or wheezing, shortness of breath (dyspnea), respiratory complications and pain in the chest or abdomen.

Some patients may also develop pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs), fever or night sweats, fatigue, and muscle weakness

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and for the treatment of digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

In the concern of the malignant pleural mesothelioma, a poorly treated neoplasia by conventional medicine, arising from the pleural mesothelial lining, researchers examined leaf extract of Cynara scolymus in vitro and in vivo.

The study included tMSTO-211H, MPP-89 and NCI-H28 mesothelioma cell lines and untransformed mesothelial cells HMC, treated with increasing concentrations (ranging from 3 to 200 μg/ml) of artichoke leaf extract for 72 hrs.

Injection of the leaf extract not only inhibited strongly the cell proliferation but also affected the migration and tumor engraftment in the mesothelioma cell lines.

More precisely, MSTO-211H cells treated with the artichoke extract showed a change in the cellular morphology both in a short-term assay, compared to more resistant more resistance in the HMC cells.

In MSTO-211H, MPP-89 and NCI-H28 cells, injection of artichoke leaf extract inhibited the formation of cancer cell colony.

Astonishingly, dietary feeding with Cynara scolymus leaf extract showed a similar inhibition against the growth of mesothelioma xenografted tumors comparable to those of pemetrexed.

Where pemetrexed is a chemo medicine used for the treatment of cancer, including mesothelioma.

Dr. Claudio Pulito and colleagues suggested, "leaf extract of Cynara scolymus holds therapeutic potential for the treatment of mesothelioma".

Taken altogether, artichoke leaf extract may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of mesothelioma, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea and Its Bioactive Polyphenol in Reduced Risk and Treatment of All Forms of Acne

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in the prevention and treatment of acne, some scientists suggested.

Green tea is a precious drink with numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Acne is a condition of skin diseases characterized by the occurrence of inflamed or infected sebaceous glands in the skin.

In the examined the effects of EGCG, the bioactive major polyphenol of green tea on human SEB-1 sebocytes with function in secreted sebum in patients with acne, researchers found that EGCG exerted a significant antioxidant activity in reduced sebum secretion by modulating the AMPK -SREBP-1 signaling pathway through AMPK expression in stimulated EGCG effect in regulated the interaction of phosphorylates sterol regulatory element-binding proteins SREBP-1.

Application of green tea EGCG also demonstrated a strong effect in reduced sebum in induction of inflammation of sebaceous glands by suppressing the NF-κB in induced transcription of proinflammatory genes in cellular response to stress and pathogens and AP-1 pathway, a transcription factor with function in regulated gene expression of inflammation factors in response to a variety of stimuli, including bacterial and viral infections.

Furthermore, administration of EGCG also found to have a huge effect in targeting almost all the pathogenic features of acne through exhibited significant cytotoxicity of SEB-1 sebocytes in the induction of viability of P. acnes,

Dr. Yoon JY, the lead author at the Seoul National University Hospital, after taking into account of all findings said, " EGCG significantly improved acne in an 8-week randomized, split-face, clinical trial, and was well tolerated".

Amazingly, the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted from May 2012 through October 2013. of a total of 64 of 80 women, from 25 to 45 years of age with moderate-to-severe acne randomly assigned to receive either 1500 mg of decaffeinated GTE or placebo (cellulose) daily for 4 weeks indicated that there were statistically significant differences in inflammatory lesion counts found on the nose, and on the chin between the two groups but no significant differences of total lesion counts.

Within-group, green tea application displayed significant reductions in inflammatory lesions distributed on the forehead and cheek with no difference in total lesion counts.

Moreover, the green tea group also resulted in a significant reduction of total cholesterol levels in compared to the cellulose group.

However, due to limitation of the small sample and short time period, researchers postulated that more research is required to determine whether a decaffeinated GTE standardized for EGCG content will provide clinical benefits in women with post-adolescent acne.

Additionally, in selected 59 studies with eight met the inclusion criteria to evaluate the effect of tea polyphenols in reduced sebum production in the skin and for treatment of acne vulgaris by reviewing the literature published on PubMed, researchers suggested that application of tea polyphenols topically may have a beneficial effect in reducing sebum secretion and in treatment of acne through inhibited lipid synthesis by the sebaceous glands.
Truly, according to the University of Miami, in the examine 12 patients with mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris received green tea application twice daily for a period of 6 weeks, topical injection of 2% green tea lotion was found to be effective in treatment with statistically significant in mean total lesion count (TLC) decreased from 24 measured at the baseline to 10 after 6 weeks treatment, a reduction of 58.33%.

The mean severity index (SI) from all patients also decreased from 2.05 before treatment to 1.25 after 6 weeks of treatment, a decrease of 39.02%.

Dr. Elsaie ML, the lead scientists said, "Topical 2% green tea lotion is an effective, cost-effective treatment for mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris".

Taking all together, green tea and its bioactive major polyphenol may be used safely in reduced risk, progression, and treatment of all form of acne pending to a large sample size and multi centers clinical trial. Oral administration of green tea should be taken with exceptional care as some cases of acute liver toxicity were reported.
