Green Tea, The Beverage Which Blocks The Onset of Ulcerative Colitis, Researchers Find

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect on prevention and treatment of Ulcerative Colitis, some scientists suggested.

Ulcerative Colitis is a digestive condition characterized by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that induces chronic inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the digestive tract.

According to statistics, approximately, between 250,000 and 500,000 people are infected by ulcerative colitis in the United States. The risk of ulcerative colitis onset is between 2 to 7 per 100,000 persons.

Most common symptoms are abdominal pain and diarrhea. However, some patients may also experience symptoms of fatigue or tiredness, loss of appetite, dehydration feeling the urge to empty the bowels constantly,.... and weight loss.

If you have some of the symptoms above, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of ulcerative colitis.

Researchers do not know the exact cause of Ulcerative Colitis.

Neither they know why ulcerative colitis induces chronic inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the digestive tract.

However, they do know that certain risk factors are associated to the development of the disease, including genetic mutation of a certain gene, environmental toxins, overreaction of the immune system,.... and long-term high levels of linoleic acid intake.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

As yin in nature, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

Mild to moderate ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, 15 received 400 mg or 800 mg of total Polyphenon E daily, administered in split doses or and 4 in placebo in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled pilot study, researchers at the end of the experiential indicated that oral administration of the extracts exerts a potential effect of reduced levels of inflammation through the improvement of the reading of the mean UC disease activity index score compared to the entry score.

After 56 days of therapy, the Polyphenon E treatment group exhibited strong improvement of over-response rate of 66.7% (10 of 15) and a remission rate of 53.3% (8/15) compared to 0% (0/4) in both response rate and remission rate in the placebo group.

Dr. Dryden GW, the lead author, after taking into account of other co-founder said, "Administration of Polyphenon E resulted in a therapeutic benefit for(ulcerative colitis (UC)) patients who were refractory to 5-aminosalicylic and/or azathioprine".

Polyphenon E is high-quality tea catechin extracted from natural tea leaves.

Further analysis of green tea bioactive polyphenols, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on dextran sulfate sodium- (DSS-) induced ulcerative colitis in rats and to explore the roles of TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway, indicated that application of the extract significantly improves the intestinal mucosal injury in rats through inhibited production of inflammatory factors which were overexpression during the acute phase of injuring and damage to induced further damage to the tissue.

Moreover, green tea bioactive polyphenols, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) also reduced chronic inflammation and maintained the balance of the ratio of Th1/Th2 T-helper (Th) lymphocytes that prevent alterations in cellular immunity in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Imbalance of Th1/Th2 was found to associate with the occurrence and development of ulcerative colitis.

Additionally, injection of green tea EGCG also reduced the levels of TLR4 signaling in activated the intracellular signaling pathway NF-κB and inflammatory cytokine production to imitate inflammation.

Amazingly, researchers also found that injection of TLR4 antagonism not only shows a significantly reduced the protective effect of EGCG on intestinal mucosal injury colitis but also increased the expressions of inflammatory factors in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Moreover, in the examine the antioxidant activity of green tea catechins in model of colitis induced by 2.4.6 trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) using 35 young adult Sprague-Dawley rats which are divided into four groups: normal control (n=5), catechins (n=9), TNBS (n=9) and 2.4.6 trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) plus catechins (n=12), at the end of the experiment researchers at the Joint study, American University of Beirut, found that groups with TNBS and catechin express strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of amelioration of symptoms and expression of ulcerative colitis through stabilizing the mast cells production, induced by injection of TNBS in compared to TNBS treated group.

Dr. the lead authors in the joint study suggested that the study depicted a significant amelioration in the TNBS- and EGCG-treated rats compared to the non-treated animals in similar to histological data, as the mechanism of action occurred basically through the NF-kB pathway and possibly through crosstalk with other pathways.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered as functional foods for the prevention and treatment of ulcerative colitis through the expression of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

Intake of green tea extract should be taken with extreme care as acute toxicity has been reported in some cases.

Green Tea and its Bioactive Polyphenol EGCG in Reduced Risk, Progression and Treatment of Psoriasis and Initiation of Psoriatic Arthritis

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk, progression and treatment of psoriasis, some scientists suggested.

Psoriasis is an immuno-inflammatory disease characterized by speeding up the life cycle of skin cells to induce skin cells to build up rapidly on the surface.

Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the investigation of green tea EGCG effect on BALB/c mice induced psoriasis by topically treated with imiquimod (IMQ) for 6 consecutive days, as a psoriasis mouse model, researchers found that application of green tea bioactive compound demonstrated a significant effect in improved psoriasiform dermatitis and the skin pathological structure by inhibited the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) which has been found in elevated levels in patient with psoriasis.

The levels of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) considered as a biomarker and an abnormally proliferating cell pool in patients with skin cancer was also inhibited by EGCG injection

Administration of EGCG promoted caspase-14 expression which has been altered in patients with psoriasis to orchestrate epidermal differentiation in decreased in inflammatory lesions in atopic dermatitis through its function as a novel regulator of skin cell differentiation and skin barrier formation to protect the skin cell against inflammation.

Treatment of EGCG also attenuated skin inflammation through reduced levels of inflammatory factors such as interleukin (IL)-17A, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, produced by a group of T helper cells and IL-17F a pro-inflammatory cytokine and immune mediator in trigger the innate immune activity in the acute phase of infection.

Furthermore, injection of green EGCG also inhibited the T helper (Th) cell subsets IL-22 in secreted cytokines in stimulated immune the defense against certain microbes and the development and maintenance of chronic inflammatory diseases and IL-23 in enhanced the expansion of T helper type 17 (Th17) cells which has been found to associate to prevalence of many of the inflammatory autoimmune responses, including psoriasis.

Significantly, green tea also reduced infiltrations of T cells in facilitating inflammatory skin lesions caused by the injection of imiquimod (IMQ).

Moreover, EGCG also ameliorated the production of malondialdehyde (MDA), an end product of lipid peroxidation in plasma observed by the protocol with colorimetric Diagnostic Reagent Kit an indication of overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in precipitated free radical chain reaction to induced oxidative stress caused by psoriasis through expression of its antioxidants and induced production of natural antioxidants in the body.

Importantly, the application of green tea compound increased percentages of CD4+ T cells in immunocytes in the activated a series of local immunologically mediated stimulatory events that produce further T cell activation and appearance against triggers conversion of symptomless (PN) skin into psoriatic plaques (PP skin).

Dr. Shuangshuang Zhang, the lead author after taking into account other confounder said, " (
EGCG attenuates the IMQ-induced histological changes of skin) of marked hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, modest acanthosis, elongated rete ridges, and modest dermal inflammation...., increased parakeratosis, acanthosis and inflammatory cell infiltration (caused by IMQ)".

EGCG exerted anti-inflammatory, immune regulatory and antioxidant effects in ameliorated expression of psoriasis may also have strong implications in prevented psoriasis in the induction of chronic inflammation of the joint in catalyzed psoriatic arthritis.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenol EGCG may be considered as a functional food for reduced risk, progression and used with conventional medicine for the treatment of psoriasis. However, the intake of green tea supplements should be taken with exceptional care as acute liver toxicity was reported in several medical literatures.

Collard Greens Inhibits the Fat Accumulation in Obese Patients

Obesity is a chronic condition characterized by excess body fat that has accumulated over time. People with a BMI of over 30 is considered obese.

Similarly, overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height. People with a BMI ranged from 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.

According to the statistics, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. Obesity has been found to induce adverse effects nearly every system of the human body, leading to an increased risk of numerous diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, the rate of obesity in the US and Canada continues to climb at an alarming rate, leading to significant burdens to the country's economy and health care system.

Epidemiologically, most common symptoms of obesity are breathlessness, increased sweating, inability to cope with physical activity, feeling very tired every day, back and joint pains, low confidence, and self-esteem and feeling isolation

According to the CDC, the most common complications associated with obesity are coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer of breast, colon, endometrial, gallbladder, kidney, and liver and sleep apnea.

Currently, there is no effective treatment of the disease. However, some researchers suggested that combat the powerful environmental factors that influence eating and physical activity may be the best approach to reduce the risk of obesity.

Bariatric surgery is used as an option for management that causes a reduction in the amount of food you are or a reduction in the absorption of calories from the food you eat, or both.

The surgery has been proposed to patients with extreme obesity (BMI of 40 or higher) due to weight-induced a serious weight-related health problem, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Furthermore, this type of surgery has posed a serious risk of many patients if the commitment of making lifelong changes in the eating and exercise habits cannot be followed through.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of obesity, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane found abundantly in collard greens.

In a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in C57BL/6N mice which were fed a normal diet (ND), HFD or HFD plus 0.1% sulforaphane (SFN) for 6 weeks, researchers found that SFN administration not only attenuated HFD-induced visceral adiposity that stored around a number of important internal organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines, adipocyte hypertrophy associated with an enlargement of adipose tissue but also ameliorated fat accumulation in the liver.

Furthermore, SFN decreased the elevated levels of serum total cholesterol and leptin, and liver triglyceride in HFD-SFN-fed mice compared to HFD-fed mice.

SFN also inhibited the expression of a gene associated with the promotion of inflammation in the adipose tissue of HFD-SFN mice and increased the adiponectin function in regulating glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown.

Moreover, reductase expression associated with the production of cholesterol was decreased and an antibody associated with fatty acid utilization was increased in lycopene treat group compared with HFD-fed mice.

Taken altogether, collard green processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Betanin, the Best Free Radical Scavenger

Antioxidants are stable atoms which inhibit oxidation caused by free radical.

Free radical scavengers are types of antioxidants that inhibit free radicals before they can orchestrate a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons in the outermost ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Oxidative stress is associated with chronic disease due to the imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the host includes heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Antioxidants besides produced by the body, they can also come into the body dietary sources.

In a healthy individual, an antioxidant produced by the body is good enough to counter the expression of free radicals induced by cell metabolism and free radicals induced by the environment such as the air we breathe and the food we eat.

However, people with a weakened immune system, intake of antioxidants from outside sources such as fruits and vegetables can be helpful.

Believe it or not. moderate free radicals in the body are necessary for body functioning, including the promotion of heart function in blood circulation.

Most common types of free radical scavengers include
* Catalases, the very important enzyme is produced by the host that protects the cell from oxidative damage by free radicals.

*Glutathione peroxidase, is a cytosolic enzyme produced by the host that dissolves hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen and peroxide radicals to alcohols and oxygen.

*Superoxide dismutase (SOD), is also produced by the host that dissolves superoxide radical into either ordinary molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide.

*Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and vitamin D.

Betanin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with overexpression of free radicals, researchers examined the betanin free radical scavenging activity.

According to the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) assay, at a pH > 4, betanin is about 1.5-2.0-fold more active to scavenge free radical compared to those of anthocyanins.

More precisely, the exceptionally high antioxidant activity of betanin was associated with an increase of its H-donation and electron-donation ability, totally depending on the expression of cationic state to mono-, di- and tri-deprotonated states present at basic solutions.

In other words, the efficacy of betanin high free radical scavenging activity was dependent on the levels of pH.

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Navy Bean, a Natural Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a way substance produced by the liver or from food sources plays an important role to build strong cell membranes and produce steroid hormone and vitamin D and aiding the digestive tract in absorbing the nutrients for our body need.

Hyperlipidemia is also one of condition found in the cluster of metabolic syndrome.

In a healthy individual, excess cholesterol is returned to the liver after performing the aforementioned function by high-density lipoprotein or "good cholesterol".

However, a prolonged period of overexpression of abnormal blood cholesterol due to excessive consumption of fat or reduced levels of "good cholesterol" in the bloodstream can cause plaque building up on the arterial wall, leading to heart diseases and stroke.

Depending on the choice of diet, your risk of high blood cholesterol can be increased or decreased.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (low-density lipoprotein) to 1 (high-density lipoprotein).

If your ratio is lower than 4, you are considered to have a healthy blood cholesterol ratio.

Hyperlipidemia is preventable. If you have high blood cholesterol, reducing bad fat intake accompanied by an increased intake of "good cholesterol" with moderate exercise can be helpful.

More precisely, by changing to a healthy diet and lifestyle with moderate exercise, you are at the lower risk of high blood cholesterol sometimes in the future (weeks or months, depending on the levels of blood cholesterol today).

People who follow the Western diet with a high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed food and low in fruits and vegetables and whole grains may have a substantially increased risk of abnormally high blood cholesterol.

According to the article "Western Diet and Heart Risk", the author wrote, "Western diets cause a third of heart attack deaths worldwide,” the Daily Mail reports. Western-style diets high in meat, fat, dairy and salt put people at higher risk of a heart attack. According to the newspaper, a study has found that poor diet is responsible for 30% of the risk of heart disease".

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.

On finding a dietary source for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined whether cooked navy bean powder (NBP) and/or heat-stabilized rice bran (RB) supplementation is tolerable, improves dietary fiber intake in children, and modulates lipid profiles.

The study included children aged 8 to 13 years at risk for CVD due to abnormal lipids. In other words, all participants were diagnosed with elevated cholesterol levels including total cholesterol ≥180 mg/dL and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) <60 mg/dL; low-density lipoprotein (LDL) ≥100 mg/dL and HDL <60 mg/dL; or non-HDL >100 mg/dL and HDL <60 mg/dL.

Participants received muffins or a smoothie daily that included 0 g NBP or RB (control), 17.5 g NBP, 15 g RB, or a combination 9 g NBP + 8 g RB. Fasting blood was collected at baseline and week 4.

Only 38 children completed the trial, including n = 9 control, n = 10 NBP, n = 9 RB, and n = 10 NBP + RB groups.

Additionally, participants in the intervention groups significantly increased intake of NBP and RB at week 4 (p≤.01), particularly increased fibers in NBP and NBP + RB groups from baseline to week 4.

Based on the tested assays, HDL-cholesterol was higher in NBP-group participants compared to control at week 4.

Although other lipid parameters also showed signs of decreasing, they are insignificantly due to the
shorter duration in the experiment (4 weeks).

In other words, higher daily intakes are needed for a longer duration to induce favorable changes across multiple serum lipid parameters.

Taken altogether, the navy bean may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea and Its Bioactive Theanine That Promote Tobacco Cessation Naturally

Green tea mixed in tobacco can significantly improve chronic cigarette smokers to quit smoke naturally, some scientists suggested.

Smoking has a history in many cultures dated back as early as 5000 BC. Europeans who arrived to America in the 16th century have quickly transformed the land to cultivated these plants for commercial profits and encourage consumption.

Our ancestors used tobacco smoke as a healing practice and enhanced pleasure. However, according to the study of the University of Manchester(4), our ancestor also use tobacco for healing purposes.
* Tobacco medical use that is administered externally includes bites of poisonous reptiles and insects; hysteria; pain, neuralgia; laryngeal spasm; gout; growth of hair; tetanus; ringworm; rodent ulcer; ulcers; wounds; a respiratory stimulant.

* Tobacco medical use that is administered by rectum includes constipation; hemorrhoidal bleeding

* Tobacco medical use that is administered internally, includes strangulated hernia (smoke by mouth); malaria or intermittent fever; dislodging obstructive material from the esophagus by inducing vomiting. And
* Tobacco medical use by inhalation includes nasal polyps.

Sadly, the medical use of tobacco now is considered nonexistence. At of today statistic, tobacco smoking including cigarettes is causing over 3 million deaths a year worldwide, and if current smoking trends continue the annual mortality will exceed 10 million by around 2030, Dr. Anne Charlton, the author of the study suggested(4).

Continuously, the doctor said, " Tobacco leaves and the smoke generated when they are burned contain over 4 thousand chemicals, the best known of which is nicotine, first isolated from tobacco leaves in 1828 by Posselt and Reimann. It is the nicotine that causes smokers to become addicted to tobacco, and the chemical itself is lethal in small doses".

According to a statistic from the CDC, more than 4 out of 10 (45.5%) of all high school students who smoke tried to stop smoking in the past 12 months. Since 2002, the number of former smokers has been greater than the number of current smokers in the US(5).

Truly, a high percentage of smokers try to quit, however, smokers who successfully quit smoke are quite low because nicotine is highly addictive.

Green tea contains more amount of antioxidants than any drinks or foods with the same volume, and is the leaves of Camellia sinensis, undergone minimal oxidation during processing, originated from China.

In the study to test the effects of tea filter in promoted tobacco cessation in volunteers smokers, researchers found that smoking tobacco with tea filter successfully decreased cigarette consumption of participants by 56.5%, and 31.7% of them stopped smoking(1).

Further analysis of tea filter effects suggested the results may be attributed to the tea filter's bioactive chemical theanine in exerting anti-tobacco and nicotine addiction activities.

Dr. Yan J, the lead author said, "This work identified a new method and material, tea filter and theanine, which inhibit tobacco and nicotine addiction and provide an effective strategy for treating tobacco addiction"(1).

Additionally, in the review of clinical studies evaluating herbals use for smoking cessation from databases from its inception to October 2012. Studies are restricted to only English or Thai, researchers indicated that out a total of 7 studies met inclusion criteria; 6 studies were a randomized trial (RCT) evaluating a variety of herbals.

According to the smoking cessation measured with various methods including the number of cigarettes per day, abstinence rate, expired CO level, and urine cotinine level at the 3 and 6 months follow up, application of mix herbal tea showed a statistically significant effect in reduced numbers of cigarettes smoked per day, nicotine craving, and total withdrawal scale but not urinary cotinine excretion(2).

However, Dr. Kitikannakorn N, the lead scientists, after taking into account of other co and confounders said, "Evidence supporting the role of complementary medicines as an anti-smoking is limited. Further research in this field would benefit from the standardization of herbals products to implement on standard interventions and outcome measurement for smoking cessation".

Interestingly, according to the study by the Science China Life Sciences to test the effect of green tea lace in a cigarette in increased smoke cessation probability, researchers found that custom-designed cigarettes laced with green tea components exerted a significant effect in reduced smoking cravings.

After 2 months of smoking this unique cigarette, researchers found that smoker reduced their smoking intake by 52% compared to control.

These results be of successful may be attributed to green tea bioactive amino acid L-Theanine, uniquely found in green tea that processes clinical proven anti-stress effects and acts as a relaxing agent(3).

Prince Philip, a lecturer in the Community Oncology Division of the Malabar Cancer Centre, said, "The study conducted in China shows that green tea may be an alternative to quit this addictive habit".

Taking all together, green tea used cigarette lace may be considered as a secondary and therapeutic treatment in increased the change of quit smoking. However, how many people have the money to order these types of customer designed cigarette?. Probably, we may stick to cold turkey quitting?, nicotine patch?

Phytochemical Alliin Inhibits Parameters Involved in the Onset of Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions including obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hypertriglycemia, hyperlipidemia associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

In other words, if you have 3 of conditions of obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol, you are at the increased risk of CVD and diabetes.

Epidemiological studies suggested people who are overweight and obesity and physical inactivity and have a condition of insulin resistance are most likely to have metabolic syndrome developing.

In the unpreventable risk factors such as aging, ethnicity, and a dietary carbohydrate, with a lower intake of crude fiber are also found in the people with the condition.

According to the statistics, among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35%. From 1988–1994 to 2007–2012, the condition increased from 25.3% to 34.2%.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic syndrome, some researchers suggested the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the major culprit in inducing the rise of the metabolic syndrome, globally.

Dr. Mohammad G. Saklayen in the investigation of the global epidemic of the metabolic syndrome said, "Though it started in the Western world, with the spread of the Western lifestyle across the globe, it has become now a truly global problem. The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome is often more in the urban population of some developing countries than in its Western counterparts.

And, " The two basic forces spreading this malady are the increase in consumption of high calorie-low fiber-fast food and the decrease in physical activity due to mechanized transportations and sedentary form of leisure time activities".

The results strongly suggested if you are the Western diet follower, your risk of metabolic syndrome increase many folds compared to those of traditional diet.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

On finding a natural ingredient with anti-metabolic syndrome activity, researchers examined the synthetic form of S-ally-mercapto captopril (CPSSA), a new stable synthetic compound produced by composition of allicin and captopril.

On fructose-induced metabolic syndrome rat model, alliin at 8 mg/kg-day exerted a significant effect by inhibiting the expression of metabolic parameters such as insulin, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations with a lesser effect of SBP

Compared to alliin, Captopril (50mg/(kg day)) only improved blood pressure and homocysteine.

Compared to a low dose of CPSSA (5mg/(kg day)) that lowered SBP but did not improve any other measured parameter, a higher dose (50mg/(kg day)) showed a significantly decreased blood pressure, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations.

The results strongly suggested that CPSSA, the combination of alliin and captopril may be used for the reducing risk of metabolic syndrome.

In the examination of treatment strategies for MetS include pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options, associated with the use of nutraceuticals, most of which have plant origins (phytochemicals), accompanied by lifestyle improvement, researchers found that alliin from garlic with an adequate dose should improve a number of the MetS components.

Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered supplements for prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
